Top Ten Tuesday’s drugstore favorites

If you set me loose in a drugstore what would I buy? Money is no object in this dream setup. I don’t think I’d overspend though because the things I really like and buy over and over just aren’t that expensive to begin with.

Yes To Blueberries eye cream – I was a little worried this would have a fragrance but if it’s there I can’t really tell. I’m impressed with this eye cream and am happy to recommend it. I found it with a $5 off coupon on it plus I had a 25% off CVS coupon so the price was just right. And the product is just right. The best drugstore eye cream I’ve used (and keep using).

Almay Oil-Free Gentle Makeup Remover Towelettes – of all the wipes at the drugstore this is my favorite. It’s not fragranced, they stay moist and they are gentle on my skin. While I don’t like to take off eye makeup with a towelette I will with this. It’s not great on mascara but it works in a pinch. The big reason I like these is that I really do feel clean and refreshed when using them.

Milani Eye Shadow Primer – this is a winner. I always recommend an eyeshadow primer and they have one of the best and at a price you can afford.

J.R. Watkins Liquid Hand Soap – it’s impossible to tell you how many of these I go through. There might be better liquid hand washes out there but I love how gentle this is and the wonderful citrus fragrances it comes in. I now have one at every sink in my house and a few in my linen closet so I don’t run out.

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hr shadows – the first batch of Color Tattoo came out at the same time as L’Oreal Infallible cream to powder shadows. At first I was all over the L’Oreal but time hasn’t been especially kind to those and a lot of mine have dried out. They are still usable but the Maybelline Color Tattoo have stayed the course. The longer I have them, the more I love them. There are a few shades I really love like Barely Beige, Branded Beige, Nude Compliment and Sleek and Spice.

Eddie Funkhouser Ultra Definition Eye Liner –  I know, I know! I write about this all the time but it’s the best black liquid eyeliner I’ve found. It’s $9.99 and some of you are lucky enough to have a Rite Aid with Eddie’s products. The rest of us can go on his site or Dermstore.

Maybelline Master Glaze Blush Stick – totally impressed with these. I have two and I’d have a lot more if I didn’t own tons of cream blushers. These little sticks are dynamite on color, blend on my skin well, and last a good amount of time. Set loose I’d buy them all up. I have Pinched Pink and Pink Fever (shown) and I’d love more.

Sinful Colors nail polish – I’m totally impressed with these $1.99 beauties. I’m sure they aren’t all created equal but the three I received are fabulous. All lasted a solid week and got compliments for that solid week.

Maybelline Color Show Nail Polish – this is the other nail polish brand I’m always stopping and looking at. If I was set loose I’d buy all of these and all the Sinful Colors ones. The Maybelline wear well and have great trendy colors.

Milani Total Lash Cover Mascara – It took me a while to find this after My Newest Addiction reviewed it but seeing it on her made me excited to find a drugstore mascara this great. This has the most unusual brush. It takes a bit of playing with the brush to get big lashes but it is a winner.

CapriClear Spray On Moisturizer – this is new to me and I haven’t had a lot of time to use it since it was sent to test but I’m so impressed with it already. I know it’s number 11 out of a list of 10 but I wanted to introduce it. This non-fragranced spray on coconut oil moisturizer is so easy to use. Great for after the shower, out of the pool for the day or just about anytime. It’s not greasy so you use and keep on going. I’ll test it more and review soon. It’s available at CVS, Walgreens, Ulta.

Drugstore shopping can be fun but if you notice I don’t have any type of foundation or concealer on my list. That’s one area that is still missing a favorite. If you have any to recommend, bring it on. In the meantime visit my fellow bloggers to see what other treasures can be found. — Marcia

Top 10 Tuesday picks favorite eye creams

Give me eye cream now! Give me eye balm immediately! Give me eye serums ASAP. If it’s for the delicate eye area I want it. I’ve reviewed a lot of eye creams so picking just 10 (or 9 as you’ll see) was extremely difficult. Some came to mind instantly because I’m either using them or I’ve bought them again. Others are ones I really enjoyed but picking between them was a difficult choice. My Top Ten are ones I would recommend without a doubt so let’s see what they are:

1. ALGENIST EYE RENEWAL BALM –  I’m on my second jar of the Algenist plus I’ve used up some sample sizes. This is the first eye cream I thought of when we picked this topic. I chose this for my desert island Beauty Spotlight Team and I’d chose it again.

2. KATE SOMERVILLE KateCeuticals MULTI-ACTIVE EYE CREAM – Kate Somerville makes more than one eye cream. I’m sure they are all wonderful but this one is the most wonderful. My eyes drank this up and begged for more. If you are looking for true anti-aging properties, splurge on this.

3. SOMME INSTITUTE EYE – I’ve repurchased every product from Somme Institute. At first I didn’t repurchase EYE but as soon as I was done with it, I missed it. Even though it doesn’t contain SPF it’s one of my favorite daytime eye creams. It’s lightweight and concealer doesn’t crease when I mix it with Somme Eye. Watch for this on Hautelook.

4. SENNA LIFT AND LIGHTEN EYE CREAM – It’s been four years since I reviewed this Senna Eye Cream but I haven’t forgotten it. I bought a second jar at IMATS because I love how it lightens my dark circles and hydrates under my eyes. Plus it’s still only $28 even after all this time.

5. YBF CORRECT – Simple name, not so simple protect. Your Best Face (YBF) tells you succinctly what their products will do and then they prove it by doing research and using the best ingredients to make sure their products work. Correct works!

6. YES TO BLUEBERRIES EYE FIRMING TREATMENT – This is my latest eye cream. I’ve been using it daily for about 6 weeks and I can’t bring myself to move on. It totally surprised me since I’m not a mass market skincare person in general but this has kept my eyes looking less lined, my dark circles at bay and has rid me of morning puffiness. For $15-20 (depending on where you buy it) this is a must to try.

7. LIFT LAB LIFT & FIRM EYE CREAM – The gel like texture of Lift Lab’s Eye Cream is very soothing. It’s lightweight and you don’t even realize you have it on during the daytime. What you will realize is how soft the skin around your eyes feels and how your puffiness isn’t really noticeable.

8. EXUVIANCE AGE REVERSE EYE CONTOUR – The name tells you one of the reasons I like this. I won this in a giveaway almost 4 years ago and wish I had it again. My memory is short when it comes to “why did I come into this room” but not on eye creams. It helps firm the collagen around eyes. I need this again.

9. DERMAdoctor WRINKLE REVENGE RESCUE & PROTECT EYE BALM – This does it all. It moisturizes, firms, reduces puffiness, helps eliminate dark circles, helps with fine lines and bakes cookies. Ok, I’m kidding about the cookies but it would if it could. It’s thicker than most of the others I’ve mentioned but sometimes you need that.

DERMAdoctor rescue & protect eye balm

10. EYES by TO GO SPA EYE MASKS – I’m cheating. I can’t help it. When you need a way to make your eyes look less lined and more relaxed you want something like an eye mask. I’ve tried and loved quite a few but I always go back to EYES by ToGoSpa. They now have 3 varieties and it’s hard to pick which you want but you won’t go wrong with any of them. These are collagen eye masks that you want any time you want to look your best.

Now it’s your turn. What are your favorite eye creams (balms, serums, masks, etc.)? I’m sure you have some to recommend and I know my fellow Top 10 bloggers will tempt us with more. — Marcia

September Subscription box fun with Birchbox and blush Mystery Beauty Box

It’s subscription box time again. Confession: I’m back to 4 a month, I’m weak I know. My current boxes are Ipsy, Wantable, blush.com Mystery Beauty Box and Birchbox. I had quit Birchbox but I went back for this month and probably next month. I’ll be doing a separate review for Wantable since it’s always the most unique of the boxes and combining blush.com and Birchbox in this review. Ipsy is basically the same for everyone so I’m not reviewing it but it was a good month for Ipsy.

Birchbox contents for September 2013

Birchbox contents for September 2013

Birchbox – I had quit this box because I was getting tired of sample after sample after sample. But I follow Birchbox on Facebook and they reeled me in with the cutest nail polish brand. Besides being addicted to subscription boxes, I’m addicted to nail polish. So back to Birchbox but I did upgrade my supposed profile. Here’s what I received which is probably similar to what everyone else received:

  • Yes to Blueberries travel set of cleansing towelettes; a good one for me since I use towelettes often though I’m not sure I’ll like the blueberry on my face so it might just be for hands.
  • A sample card of 2 shades of Yes to Grapefruit CC Cream in light and light-medium. I love CC and BB creams and these samples are generous enough to actually use.

Yes To products in my Birchbox 9/13

Yes To products in my Birchbox 9/13

  • Amika Bombshell Blowout Spray – I’m totally sick of hair products in these boxes and it doesn’t fit my hair type so it will be in a giveaway soon. I’m sure it’s nice, it’s just not Marcia style
  • Racinne Ultimate Youth Power Eye Serum – you’ll soon see why I got a laugh out of this. But eye serums are always welcome in my life
  • Ruffian Nail Lacquer – this is why I went back! The color is Fox Hunt and it’s a metallic looking orange with pink undertones. It’s not a color I’d choose but it’s so darn cute and I will use it. Some people got the coolest looking green which I wish I’d gotten.

So that’s my $10 worth at Birchbox and I got my money’s worth. The polish costs $10 so everything else is a bonus. There’s no way to tell retail value of this unless I took out my math brains which I’m not willing to do but I’m happy and that’s what counts.  (Disclosure: I pay for my own Birchbox but I’ve linked to my referral code which would get me points towards possible products.)

Blush Mystery Beauty Box for Sept. 2013

Blush Mystery Beauty Box for Sept. 2013

Blush.com Mystery Beauty Box – if you remember I was pretty miserable last month. The funny thing is after I published I started finding other people’s posts about the same exact box and they were delighted. So you pay your money and take your chances with a subscription box. A lot of friends were happy with my castoffs last month but this month less will be given away.

  • Racinne Deluxe Travel Set – I’d never heard of Racinne and suddenly two of my boxes have it. I did have a laugh about that. This is a very nice kit in a travel bag that contains 4 products: Ultimate Power Mask, Ultimate Youth Power Serum, Ultimate Youth Power Cream, Ultimate Youth Power Neck Emulsion. So now I have a clear bag with 5 products to try eventually when I run out of other skincare! The kit isn’t sold separately so I don’t have a clue as to value but Racinne prices are in line with most other quality skincare lines.

  • AmLactin Triple Action Alpha-Hydroxy Therapy Foot Cream –  this is a good one. My feet get awful in the winter and AmLactin has a great reputation. This is a full size that costs $10.

  • LVX Nail Lacquer – as you possibly know I love polish so this was a happy find. It’s a non-toxic polish. There were 6 shades in the various boxes and I received Sanguine which is a nice burgundy cream. I’ve always wanted to try LVX too. This $16 polish was part of LVX’s winter 2012 collection.

LVX Sanguine and Ruffian Fox Hunt

  • Pop Beauty Pouty Pop Crayon in Fuchsia Flirt – this box was curated by Sara Strand who is the Creative Director for Pop Beauty. She picked this product since not only does it make a great pink lip color but you can use it as a blush too. It’s actually part of a set of 6 in a Crayon Kit that sells for $25.

LVX Sanguine and Poppy Fuchsia Lip Crayon

  • The rest are sample sizes: Brad Biophotonic Skin Care Ultra Peel; Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo and Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel.

Blush Mystery Beauty for Sept. - sample sizes

Blush Mystery Beauty for Sept. – sample sizes

Blush.com says the box is worth over $100 but I find it very hard to consider samples as being worth what they say they are worth. I’m sure the Racinne skincare set counts highly in that total but like I said, it’s not sold on the site so who knows. I am not unhappy with the box and will continue with blush.com Mystery Makeup Bag for another month. A subscription is $24.95 a month but they very often sell the box for a discount once it’s out if you sign up for a subscription. The October box is being curated by The Makeup Blogger so I’m excited to see what she’s allowed to pick out for the box.

All in all some hits and misses. I spent $34.95 to write this post and I’ve got half a dozen products I’ll use, some that are possibilities and a few hair products that will be given away. Not bad. Not Wantable.com but not bad. Are you a subscription boxer yet? — Marcia

Beauty Army for January and February 2013

Beauty subscription boxes are a little too addicting for me. They just show up in my mail and I love getting mail. I’m too lazy to unsubscribe plus to be honest I love the little thrills. I’m reporting both my January and February 2013 Beauty Army boxes even though I know that you can’t necessarily get the same items. But Beauty Army is different than boxes like Birchbox, Ipsy and Glossybox. With Beauty Army you fill out a profile and say what kinds of items that you like. When it’s your day to “pick” your samples I’ve found that if you don’t like what’s being offered to you then you can redo your profile to see what other options there might be.

The main reason I’m currently subscribed to Beauty Army is that Whip Hand Cosmetiques has a Camouflage Collection that is sold exclusively through them. I like the mini bottle (and I do mean mini) that they offered and for $12 a month to get this and other choices is fun. I think that Whip Hand only created 4 of these colors but I’m hoping they’ll work with Beauty Army again.

But now to the main attractions. Beauty Army sometimes recycles their goodies so it’s possible that you’ll see some of my items in your choices at some point.

Beauty Army for January 2013

Beauty Army for January 2013

Typically the Beauty Army box is a pink cigar box. I love these for storage. I have at least half a dozen of them now. January 2013 was their one year birthday so they included an extra “surprise” in the box. When you get your selections you can pick UP TO 6 items. Well who would pick less? Even if you don’t want something, a friend will!! My choices were

I don’t have super long lashes and I have a feeling these might be best for someone whose lashes sweep their browbone. beauty army jan 13 bbwBath and Body Works Shower Gel in Twilight Woods is a product I picked mainly because it’s a nice size and I know someone will enjoy it, even if it’s not me. beauty army jan 13 hairsprayNot Your Mother’s: She’s a Tease Volumizing Hairspray. There weren’t a lot of items I was excited about but I thought this would be great to own or to give to my mother even though the name says not to! beauty army jan 13 yes to blueberriesYes to Blueberries Eye Firming Treatment – a great brand and a great way to try it out. I can usually get about 4 days use out of a packet. This is obviously just a sample packet but I was happy to see this as a choice.beauty army jan 13 mark bundlebeauty army jan 13 mark products

A box of these costs $20 on the Boo-Boo Cover Up website. beauty army feb 13 packetsSample packets from Fiafiani and Yes To Carrots. I’m currently testing Fiafini eye cream and really enjoying it so I was happy to see a sample of their Delicate Cleansing Emulsion in here. Yes to Carrots Super Rich Body Butter is a nice travel packet from a respected brand. beauty army feb 13 blush labelbeauty army feb 13 blushSkinn Cosmetics Color Touch Eye, Cheek and Lip Glow – do you know what a surprise it was to find a full size cosmetic as a choice? It sells for $17 on the Beauty Army site. beauty army feb 13 whip handbeauty army feb 13 whip hand swatchWhip Hand Cosmetiques – this time the shade is Medal of Honor, a golden copper. Here are a few other reviews for Beauty Army, I see I neglected to do the November box but I did get another Whip Hand Cosmetics mini in Green Beret, You Da Balm in Coconut and a different shade of the Skinn Cosmetics Twin Set gloss. I don’t remember the others but those made me smile big time!

All in all I’ve more than gotten my $12 worth for each box. I’ve got gifts, prizes for a giveaway and several items I’m excited about trying myself. The list of brands working with Beauty Army just keeps growing and growing so there’s a very good chance that I’ll be back to show you more monthly boxes. — Marcia
