Vapour Organic Beauty now has a carmine free line

If you know about Vapour Organic Beauty then you know that this is an independent brand founded by three people who only create and sell what they believe in. It’s made entirely from pure minerals, essential oils and organic plant ingredients. Many consumers that are interested in Vapour Organic Beauty only use cruelty free products and vegan lines. Carmine is a beetle that is found in South America. The beetle is a parasite that lives on the prickly pear cactus. Their dye is used in clothing dye, food dye, and in cosmetics as well as other items. The beetle is basically boiled to remove the color. Knowing this, it makes sense why many want to only use carmine free products.

Vapour Organic Beauty has a big line of carmine free cosmetics and they sent 5 of their newest ones for us to share with you. These glosses, blush sticks and eyeshadow were newly added to Vapour in the spring. You’re going to want them all.

Vapour Organic Beauty Multi-Use Blush in Charm and Cheeky

Vapour Organic Beauty Multi-Use Blush in Charm and Cheeky

Vapour has created some fabulous Aura Multi-Use Blush ($36) sticks that I’ve reviewed before. The two new shades are fabulous and I can’t get enough of them. I love a cream blush so these make me very happy.  I have normal skin that is only oily in the t-zone. The Vapour Beauty Blush sticks work beautifully on me. They glide on, are easy to blend and last well. I like to have a thin layer of translucent powder on my cheeks on the days that I use a cream blush since that’s going to make them blend better and last longer.

Vapour Aura Multi-Use Blush in Cheeky

Vapour Aura Multi-Use Blush in Cheeky

Cheeky Multi-Use is a soft cool pink that looks great on a cool skintone as a blush but also as a lip color. You can use these sticks on your eyes too. Charm Multi-Use is a warmer, peachier tone. Vapour describes it as “peaches & cream”.

Vapour also makes cream eyeshadows called Mesmerize Eye Color ($20) or Mesmerize Eye Shimmer. This is my first experience using their cream eye color and I have the shade Ace. This is a beautiful plum tone brown described by Vapour as “smoky plum”. It’s a very subtle shade that can be used alone or with other shadows for more definition. I use an eyeshadow primer with this so it doesn’t crease on me but I think without one it would probably crease and/or fade. I apply it with my finger and then use a taklon brush to smooth it out.

If you love lipgloss then you need to know about Vapour’s collection, Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss ($22). The two new carmine free shades are Flutter and Tickle and both make my heart flutter and tickle my fancy. These are cool toned so they work best for me with Cheeky blush stick. There’s a slight sweet fragrance to them at first and the plumping action is non-stinging. You’ll notice your lips but you won’t feel any discomfort. Elixir Lip Gloss contains Vapour’s unique lip-specific nourishing blend of healing ingredients such as vitamin-rich Lecithin, Jojoba Oil, restorative Lemon Balm, and antioxidant Green Tea.

Tickle is the lighter of the two and could be considered to be a pink nude shade. Vapour describes it as a sugary sweet shimmery pink. When they say shimmer though, it’s not glitter, it’s a luminous quality that makes it look shimmery. Flutter is more pigmented and is described as a “multi-dimensional mauve with a hint of pink” and also “grown up sexy pink”. This is a non-sticky formula that feels very comfortable on because it’s so hydrating. My lips just feel soft when I wear these and never gooey.

Vapour Organic Beauty created some beautiful Vernissage Nail Lacquers

Vapour Vernissage Nail Lacquers

Vapour Vernissage Nail Lacquers

Vapour Vernissage Nail Lacquer aren’t new to this great organic beauty brand but they are new to me. When Vapour offered these for review I waved my fingers and said “me! I’ll be happy to review these”. I have two shades of the 12 they have available ($16 each) and have to tell you that these wore beautifully for a full week each. Plus I felt great wearing polishes with these attributes:

Vernissage 5-Free Nail Lacquer:

  • NO Toluene
  • NO Dibutyl Phthalate (DHB)
  • NO Formaldehyde
  • Cruelty Free
  • Gluten Free
  • No Nano Particles
  • Paraben Free
  • Inner and Outer Packaging Recyclable

Vapour Vernissage Nail Lacquers has changed the packaging of these polishes and there’s more in each bottle. I love how they describe their mission: “Vapour invites you to celebrate the spirit of a night in Paris; hear the timeless glittering laughter and champagne toasts in Vernissage 5-Free Nail Lacquer.”

Vapour Nail Lacquer in Eternal

Vapour Nail Lacquer in Eternal

Vapour has 12 shades but I can’t seem to find them on on vapourbeauty.com.

Amour – Juicy, bright berry

Captive – Venomous cherry

Eternal – Lavender pearl grey

Instinct – Classic true red

Kitten – Uplifting, bright coral

La Fee Verte – Deepest emerald green

Librarian – Sexy, milk chocolate brown

Rogue – A classic, feminine mauve

Scandal – Hot lava red

Trance – Charcoal graphite

Virtue – Sheer cream with a hint of peach

Mischief – An edgy, chic violet grey

ETERNAL is the first shade I chose to wear. It’s not a Marcia shade at all but I really loved wearing it. I’ve never worn a nude nail polish but it made my hands look so long. Eternal appeared different in different lights. It’s described as “lavender pearl gray” but on me it was a dark nude polish that showed some pink undertones.

CAPTIVE is the other shade I received and while it’s described as “venomous cherry” I only noticed the cherry tone when I just had one coat on. I needed two coats to level it out and not show visible nail lines so it is more of a burgundy on me.

Vapour Organic Beauty – eco beauty done right

Vapour Organic Beauty

Vapour Organic Beauty

Vapour Organic Beauty creates products that they say are good enough to eat. According to the USDA “Vapour is the only color cosmetic manufactured to the USDA’s Organic Food Standard.” vapour beauty usdaThat’s saying something but there’s a lot more to say about this company that is made entirely from certified organic plants, vitamins and minerals. They are cruelty free, sustainable and ethical. And they make great products if the 5 lovelies they sent, seen above, are any indication of what they can do.

I’ve reviewed a few other Vapour Beauty products and liked using them but the newest ones I have are even better than before. I’ve been wearing them a lot and getting a lot of pleasure from doing so.

Aura Multi-Use Blush sticks in Charisma and Intrique

Aura Multi-Use Blush sticks in Charisma and Intrique

My absolute favorites are the AURA MULTI-USE BLUSH STICKS. That’s no surprise to anyone who knows me. I’d much rather use a cream blush product than a powder one. I find creams to be much more natural looking and easier for me to control. With a powder blush I never quite know how much pressure to put on a brush and I can end up with too much. But with these AURA Multi-Use Blush Sticks I quickly learned how much to use and I find them exceptionally easy to apply and blend.

Aura Multi-Use

Aura Multi-Use

The two that I have – Charisma and Intrique – are unfortunately not available at the current time but they’ll give you an idea of what these are all about. The colors that are available are stunning (see beauty.com for great swatches). These aren’t just blush sticks, they are multiple use so you can use them safely on lips and eyes as well.

There is no fragrance to these, they are silky smooth and glide on beautifully, and they last well throughout the day.

Vapour swatches: Solar Translucent Bronzer, Charisma & Intrique Aura blush sticks

SOLAR TRANSLUCENT BRONZER comes in 3 shades; from lightest to darkest they are Mirage (shown), Simmer and Spicy. I personally love the translucent quality of this bronzer since I am not a bronzing queen like my dear blog partner Lisa. I like a touch of color and I’m able to achieve that with Solar Translucent Bronzer stick in Mirage. Like the Aura sticks this is a cream product and I feel that I can control the amount I use as well as the placement better than I can with a powder product. Plus if I goof, it’s easier to blend down and fix.

Vapour Organic Beauty Solar Translucent Bronzer in Mirage

Vapour Organic Beauty Solar Translucent Bronzer in Mirage

Solar is infused with sun-specific super antioxidants Pomegranate, Green Tea and Acai Berry, and nourishes with a soothing organic Calendula Flower and vitamin-rich organic Shea Butter. This isn’t orange on me even though my lousy photography makes it look that way. Instead it’s a light tan that works well on my paleness. It’s described as a “pale gold that brings a kiss of the sun to pale skin”.

SIREN is the name for Vapour’s lipsticks and some of these shades really fit that description. Imagine my surprise when I opened the package to find this lipstick:

Vapour Beauty Siren lipstick in Dare

Vapour Beauty Siren lipstick in Dare

DARE is a rich plummy brown that looks almost black in the tube. I’m the girl that wears light lips. So how do I review a product that is this dark and vampy? EASY PEASY LADIES!! I applied it and then applied the gorgeous POSSESS lipstick over it and the angels sang. (Well maybe they hummed a little.)

Vapour lipsticks in Dare and Possess

Vapour lipsticks in Dare and Possess

POSSESS is a color that I absolutely love. It’s called a “sexy adult pink” and on my lips it turns a perfect soft mauve. It’s the type of color I grab when I want to look my best but still natural. When it’s worn over Dare it becomes a deeper version of itself. SIREN LIPSTICKS are unscented beauties. While Dare will only get used occasionally, Possess has a permanent place in my makeup bag. They have a creamy jojoba, pomegranate and camellia oil base so they don’t feel dry.

My comeaway impression of VAPOUR ORGANIC BEAUTY is that this is a very special brand of organic makeup. They are so sure of their products that they even sell samples of many of them. They are confident that once you try the textures and colors that you’ll come back. I’m confident of that too. Have you tried Vapour lately? — Marcia

Blush.com Mystery Makeup Box remains a mystery for August

I don’t know what to say about the August blush.com Mystery Makeup Box. This is my 4th month to subscribe and the first month that I’m disappointed. I’ve been thinking about what to write and I realize it’s my personal likes and dislikes that influence my feelings. I’ll be interested in what you have to say about the contents and if you’d be happy with this box/bag.

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

From what I’ve read blush.com (a subsidary of dermstore) says this box is worth $130. I pay $24.95 for my subscription though they often have specials as the month is running out that give you a discount on your first box. My previous reviews are linked here. From the looks of the items on the card I expected to be happier than I am with the contents. On the card it specifically says that the contents are “selected by our panel just for YOU”. (They need to learn about Wantable.com!)

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August contents

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August contents

Let’s start with makeup since that’s what I love the most. There are 3 items in here that I’d consider cosmetics:

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August cosmetics

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August cosmetics

Pixi eyeliner, Anastasia Lash Genius, Vapour Organic Lip Gloss

Pixi eyeliner, Anastasia Lash Genius, Vapour Organic Lip Gloss

1) Pixi eyeliner – this is a star and I’d be thrilled to find this in my box but I personally just ordered a slew of Pixi pencils. The shade is Deep Plum and it’s in the set I ordered. This is a winner though, just bad timing for me.

2) Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat – this is another star even though it’s a mini size. The problem is that I have 3 of these already. Not blush.com’s fault since how many people have 3? But it is a disappointment for me.

3) Vapour Organic Beauty Elixir Lip Gloss – a beautiful gloss but the card says Hush which is a nude pink and I ended up with Hypnotic which is sheer burgundy. I like light lips so Twinkle or Hush would have made me happy. This just makes me wonder who will end up with it. Again not their fault but another disappointment.

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August skincare items

4) Carita Paris Biological Face Mask – this is a mini (a full size sells for $90) and it sounds good from what dermstore says. It did surprise me to find so many deluxe samples this time since the other boxes all had full size products. This is a revitalizing and repair mask for mature skin, for instant beauty enhancement. I do have mature skin, but does everyone who subscribes to this subscription have mature skin? If I were younger this would steer me away from future boxes.

5) Coola SPF – Again a deluxe sample size. This one is Cucumber – I like to eat cucumbers but do I want to smell like one? It’s a matte finish with SPF 30. A full size (1.7 oz) is $32 but this is just 0.23 oz. I won’t mention that I have about 4 Coola minis from other boxes – or maybe I just did.

6) Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant – yet another deluxe sample. That makes 4. A full size of 4.2 oz sells for $48. This is 0.5 oz. This exfoliant is one you mix yourself since it is made of granules. Here’s what dermstore says about it: “Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant purifies and brightens your complexion. A blend of strawberries, lactic acid and rice gently exfoliate, buffing away impurities and exposing new dermal cells for a smooth, radiant appearance. Vitamin-rich rhubarb enriches your skin with vital nutrients while chickpea flour absorbs excess oil and minimizes the look of large pores.”

Mor Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia

Mor Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia

7) Mor Emporium Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia – a full size item at least. The problem for me is that I hate florals and I hate gardenia especially. Oh woe is me. I’m sure it’s wonderful – for someone else. This is 3.3 fl oz but dermstore only carries mini sizes. Now this totally confuses me. They sell mini sizes but send a full size – with the other mini products they only sell full sizes. I’m baffled. It appears to be a value of $20 though on other websites.

Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist

Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist

8) Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist – this full size product is their premier item of the month. This is the product that they had teasers with. So why is this a problem? It’s full size, it’s prestige! But it’s to create beachy textured hair and my hair is straight as a pin. It’s not ever going to be beachy and textured, it just doesn’t operate that way. This costs $22 and I’m sure it’s fabulous – for the right head of hair.

So here I am, a grumpy bear. grumpy cartoon bearGreat products with 4 full sized ones and 4 deluxe samples would normally make me happy but there’s nothing I’m excited about using other than the Pixi eyeliner and I’ve got that on its way to me. Please let me know what you think of this box. Would you be a grumpy bear or would you be full and sassy like this little guy? — Marcia happy bear

Vapour Organic Beauty – products for a smoky eye

Vapour Organic Beauty - Smoke shadow, Black Velvet eyeliner, Star Light Trick

I’m excited about my first experience with Vapour Organic Beauty. I’d read about the line for a while but hadn’t had the chance to try it out before. Vapour’s creative director is Eric Sakas, a cosmetic insider and previous president of Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. You can see him and read more about him on the About page of Vapour Beauty. One thing that really stands out to me about Vapour Organic Beauty is that at least 70% of the ingredients are organic and the remainder is natural. There’s so much I could tell you about the brand’s ethics but I want to get to the products and share these with you.

I was sent a few products to create a smoky eye. Some people tell me they are sick to death of the term smoky eye but I’m not and I believe that even if something is ‘created’ for that purpose that we can use the products how we want – smoky or just pretty.

Vapour Organic Beauty specializes in cream products. The Mesmerize Eye Color Treatments are cream sticks that could be mistaken for a slim lipstick. They are available in 4 shades and I have two of those. Charm is a rosey peach. It sounds dark but it comes across very softly on the lid. Smoke is a light charcoal. It makes a great smokey eye since it’s not too dark even if it looks so in the packaging. There’s also Smolder (chocolate brown) and Flash (mushroom taupe). These sell for $18 each.

There are a few things to point out about these. First is that they are very nourishing for your eyes. If you have a problem with powder eyeshadows these are a good alternative because they are chemical free and moisturizing. Next though is that they do crease if you wear them alone but last longer as a base with powder eyeshadows. With Smoke it’s a great sexy smoke look though – one you’d like to wear if you were seducing someone. They do NOT work with well an eyeshadow primer, they are best on their own or you can use them as a base for a powder eyeshadow. I don’t get a day’s worth of wear out of them so I prefer to use them when I’m just going somewhere for about 3 hours.

Mesmerize Eyeliner in Black Velvet ($18) is a perfect addition to that sultry eye. It can be glided on for a well defined eye or you can use the blending tool to smudge and give it that seductiveness. The eyeliner wears very well. I’ve worn it on my waterline and it stayed pretty well even though my eyes tear up easily. It’s one of the most blendable eyeliners I’ve ever tried. You have time to smudge it to your heart’s content but it doesn’t fade away easily. Because Vapour doesn’t use harsh chemicals this works well even on older eyes.

My favorite product from the “look” is Trick Stick in Star ($20). Oh I love this and have been wearing it often with other eye products as well as Vapour ones. Vapour makes 3 different Trick Sticks: Star (platinum), Dazzle (shimmery gold) and Luster (lilac tinted silver). You can wear these anywhere you want highlighting: cheekbones, brow bone, inner corner of the eye, and the cupid’s bow on your lips. The stick is very moisturizing and glides on. Star is very sheer and doesn’t look glittery, just glowy. I love it on the browbone or even above. It opens the eyes to put a little bit above your eyebrow.
