Shiny and glowy Makeup Wars

Makeup Wars time. It’s been a while since I shared my thoughts on MW and this time I’m only sharing half of the subject: bronzers and glowy items. I’m a glowy person (at times) and rarely bronze. Pale is okay around here though every once in a while a bronzer sneaks in the back door. Onto my most used “glows” lately.makeup wars glowy open

PAT McGRATH LABS, SKIN FETISH 003 NUDE

Don’t hate me because this is beautiful and s.o.l.d. out. It didn’t take long to sell out and when I reviewed it I warned you. At first I wasn’t sure if I’d made a mistake buying this or not but the powder is so pretty and so hard to resist. It also comes with a buffing brush (I don’t use it though) and a Shiny Stick highlighter and balm duo. This is here to remind us all, don’t underestimate Pat McGrath and don’t wait.

URBAN DECAY AFTERGLOW POWDER HIGHLIGHTER in AURA

With pink being my favorite color, when Urban Decay came out with the beautiful Afterglow Highlighters, I had to buy Aura. It’s pink perfection without being over the top. Aura is a light pink iridescent powder that gives me a radiant look. It’s subtle unless I build it up but I prefer using it as an all over glow applied lightly with a stippling brush or as a cheek highlighter over my blush. I like it on my browbone too so it’s getting more use than just as a highlighter. These are only $26 and not limited edition but that doesn’t mean that it’ll be around forever.

TOM FORD SKIN ILLUMINATING DUO in MOODLIGHT

The name of this duo is confusing at best. On Nordstrom’s website they call it Moonlight and I think I might have too when I first wrote about it. Even though Moodlight is $80, in the long run it’s saved me money. I often crave beautiful products that I don’t use often enough. This gorgeous powder duo reminds me I don’t need more. Described as “a soft white shade is like the luminous glow of daylight and a radiant golden shade is like the romantic illusion of candlelight. These lightly shimmering shades can be applied individually or layered together to create a multidimensional glow” Moodlight gives me the golden tones I want especially with complimentary eyeshadows.

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE UNDER EYE in ILLUMINATION

This might seem like an odd fit here and in a way it is. I’m a big fan of Bye Bye Eye and when I received this in Illumination (in Light) I wasn’t sure about it. I don’t really want anything shiny under my eyes. But this became a surprise favorite once I saw how much brighter my under eye area looked. I use it sparingly, unlike my swatch, after foundation is on. It contains Drops of Light Technology™ for added radiance and a lit-from-within glow. As with all IT Cosmetics facial products it has anti-aging ingredients. To top it off, it’s waterproof which certainly helps on these 90 degree days.

SENNA BRILLIANT BRONZE BAKED MINERAL BRONZER & HIGHLIGHTER in DAWN

A bronzer isn’t on my face very often but every once in a while that paleness can get to me and I want to fit in with the crowd that worships bronzers. One of my favorites is by Senna which you just don’t hear enough about. Brilliant Bronze is available in three combinations: Dawn (light bronze & seashell pink highlighter), Sunset (deep bronze & golden highlighter), and Gold Star (sparkling yellow gold & champagne highlighter). It is a shimmery option which makes it bronze AND glowy. It’s a combination of warmth and illumination. I love the description that Senna gives: “This delicate mineral veil contains specially cultivated fresh water pearls with amino acids and proteins to hydrate and nourish skin, keeping it luxuriously soft and smooth.

While I have many more highlighters and even bronzers, these are the ones I wear these days. What about you? What are your favorites? —  Marcia

Makeup Wars shines with favorite Highlighters and Illuminators

Favorite highlighters & illuminators from Tom Ford, Hourglass, IT Cosmetics, Becca

Favorite highlighters & illuminators from Tom Ford, Hourglass, IT Cosmetics, Becca

MAKEUP WARS is sharing some of the highlighters and illuminators that make us twinkle and shine, that make us glimmer and shimmer, that make us excited to be women in 2016.

Not every one of my highlighters is shown here, just the 3 newest and one all time favorite. There are many more that I really like but some just stand out more than others. Introducing 4 of mine: TOM FORD MOODLIGHT, HOURGLASS AMBIENT IRIDESCENT STROBE LIGHT, IT COSMETICS HELLO LIGHT CREME ILLUMINATOR, and BECCA MOONSTONE.

Tom Ford Skin Illuminator Powder Duo in Moodlight

Tom Ford Skin Illuminator Powder Duo in Moodlight

Tom Ford Skin Illuminator Powder Duo in Moodlight ($80) is one gorgeous illuminator. I resisted this for so long but the more I read about it and saw photos the more I desired it. This is amazingly subtle even if the photo doesn’t look that way. You are able to control the amount of illumination, easily building it up from an understated amount that brightens and lightens your face to a shimmery amount that gives more of a bronzing highlight. Tom Ford Moodlight (sometimes seen as Moonlight on a website) can be used separately or together. Use a big fluffy brush for an all over sweep of illumination or a blush brush to emphasize certain areas of your face.

Hourglass Ambient Iridescent Strobe Light

Hourglass Ambient Iridescent Strobe Light

There are 4 different Hourglass Ambient Strobe Powders. I chose Iridescent since it has a touch of pink that the others I’ve been using lack. Hourglass Ambient Iridescent Strobe Light is described as an illuminating pink powder imparting a soft highlight. I have very fair cool toned skin and I thought this would add enough brightness without being overwhelming. And I was right. This is subtle yet lights up my face. The powder is angel soft to the touch yet doesn’t ever look powdery on me.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone ($38) is the golden highlighter that I have. I bought a set that contained a travel size of Moonstone and it was one of the best buys I made. Moonstone, one of 7 shades, is a pale gold. It is slightly sparkly so it’s not a daytime look for me. I prefer to apply this with my fingers instead of a brush. It has an almost creamy finish to it so my fingers pick up this very soft powder and I find that my face is more luminous when used this way. The formula is enriched with ultrafine luminescent pearls. If I had to pick one brand for highlighting and illuminating it would be Becca. They really do stand out in this field.

Becca, Hourglass, Tom Ford swatches

As someone who favors cream products I couldn’t leave out IT COSMETICS ($24). They’ve created two Hello Lights! Anti-Aging Illuminizers – Powder and  Creme. I love them both but IT Cosmetics Hello Lights Anti-Aging Creme Illuminizer is my favorite.

IT Cosmetics Hello Lights Anti-Aging Creme Illuminizer

IT Cosmetics Hello Lights Anti-Aging Creme Illuminizer

Besides having wonderful anti-aging and hydrating ingredients (infused with peptides, hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, silk and vitamins A, C, & E), it gives such a subtle and luminous glow. It’s perfect for spot highlighting like at the top of your cheekbones, above your eyebrows, and the cupid’s bow of your mouth. It’s a lit from within look and one I use often.

There are dozens more highlighters and illuminators that I enjoy using. Adding a bit of a liquid highlighter into foundation gives a beautiful dewy look, using an illuminating primer like COVER FX does all the work for you. Just don’t go without at least one of these wonderful products in your makeup collection.

Makeup Wars splurged!!! Here are my OMGs…

Makeup Wars splurging with Viseart and Tom Ford

Makeup Wars splurging with Viseart and Tom Ford

Welcome to Makeup Wars or as I call it this week, Spending Wars. I splurged over the holidays and many new products ended up at my home. I’d be taking pictures forever and a day if I showed you everything so instead I’ve chosen two brands, Viseart and Tom Ford Beauty, that I’m most excited about. I did go overboard but I “needed” these. Didn’t I??

TOM FORD BEAUTY “LIPS & BOYS” LIP COLOR

Last year Tom Ford came out with a limited edition Boys & Men collection. I admit I bought even more last year than I did this year but I couldn’t resist. These are small lipsticks and probably not worth the $35 each but I just had to have them. I prefer wearing lipstick and Tom Ford lipsticks are my favorite ever. They have a slight vanilla fragrance that I don’t really notice at all. They are moisturizing and I feel like a million bucks when I wear my TF lips.

“Tom Ford Lip Color is filled with rare and exotic ingredients including soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil to create an ultra-creamy texture with an incredibly smooth application. Specially treated color pigments are blended to deliver pure color with just the right balance of luminosity.”

AUSTIN

Tom Ford Austin

Tom Ford Austin

Austin is a light coral with a slight metallic finish. This is a combination of peach & pink and I find it very versatile.

FLYNN

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Flynn

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Flynn

This is actually my second Flynn. I bought it last year, fell in love with it, wore it a LOT but was afraid to wear it more. Once it was brought back I had to buy another. Now one is constantly with me while my newest one can live at my vanity. On me Flynn is a light pink that’s neutral. There is a little touch of peach so that it’s not a bubble gum pink. Different lip liners can change this up so it can look perfect no matter which blush I’ve chosen for the day.

JUDE

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Jude

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Jude

Jude is my pink of the group. This is a cool, blue based pink. It’s not too light and it’s not too dark so it must be just right!

JUSTIN

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Justin

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Justin

Justin is different than any of my other Tom Ford lipsticks. It has more depth to it than I usually choose. It’s a purple based pink that I’ve seen described as fuchsia but it doesn’t turn bright on me.

VISEART

Viseart eyeshadow palettes

Viseart eyeshadow palettes

There were some great sales on Viseart palettes but even without a sale these palettes are the cream of the crop. They are a splurge at $80 each but the quality is unsurpassed. I prefer their satin palettes to their mattes but I still indulged in two matte palettes since I know how outstanding these are.  At some point I’ll have to give in and leave my beloved satins behind so when that time comes, I’m ready.

SULTRY MUSE

Viseart Sultry Muse

Viseart Sultry Muse

I have (and reviewed) a similar palette to Sultry Muse, it was a gift from Lisa and my first experience with Viseart. It stopped me in my tracks. The shades in Sultry Muse are mostly neutrals with a few shades that pop. The brown tones are my favorites, especially the top row. But there’s also a rose gold, silver, and charcoal w/blue undertones that make this quite unique. Viseart shadows practically apply themselves, that’s how smooth they are.

BRIDAL SATIN

Viseart Bridal Satin

Viseart Bridal Satin

Of all the Viseart palettes this is the one that truly shines. I question the name “bridal” only because most makeup artists that I’m friends with use a very subtle eye look on their brides; this is far from subtle. I’d call this “Rehearsal Dinner Satin”. Some of the shades look similar to Sultry Muse but they are just variations. Bridal Satin is brighter, more vibrant and is a palette to wear any time you want to look your best. The shades are both warm and cool making it quite adaptable. Satin eyeshadows from Viseart have a small amount of shimmer to them. If you pat them on you won’t get glitter, you’ll get shine.

NEUTRAL MATTE

Viseart Neutral Matte

Viseart Neutral Matte

Neutral Matte is the palette I’d use on a bride. It amazes me that these are mattes in the way they perform. They are silky soft and glide on without any patchiness. The hues are in the warm range with shades of beige, bone, brown, taupe plus an orange, black and charcoal. The only shade I can’t personally wear is the orange one in the second row.

DARK MATTE

Viseart Dark Matte palette

Viseart Dark Matte palette

Dark Matte is darker than my picture shows, my lighting isn’t the best, although the photo with all 4 palettes is more accurate. The shades are livelier than Neutral Mattes and is a great companion piece. Dark Matte is more a a cool neutral palette. The oranges in the middle row are much easier for me to wear as they are softer. If I had to pick only one of these two matte palettes I’d get the Dark Matte since it works better for my coloring and preferences.

Favorite eyeshadow palettes for fall

While this is supposed to be Top 10 Tuesday for me it’s Top 7 Tuesday. I decided to just choose eyeshadow palettes I own and rely on rather than make a wishlist. I’m excited about my choices and recommend all of these highly. Some were received for review, others were bought, and all are loved and recommended.

LANCOME AUDA(CITY) in PARIS ($68)

LANCOME AUDA[CITY] IN PARIS

LANCOME AUDA[CITY] IN PARIS

This is the first Lancome palette I’ve bought in years. There are 16 shades in 4 finishes. They are set up almost like four individual palettes. The colors are Filigree (light gold shimmer), Choquette (peach matte), Parfait (light pink matte), Kitten Heel (gold copper shimmer) , Joie (golden brown shimmer), Voyage (muted purple matte), Sante (brown matte), Éclair (purple metallic), Exhibition (orchid shimmer), Zip Me Up (deep purple shimmer), Volcano (silvery gray shimmer),  Clock Strikes 12 (gray metallic), Audacious (smokey brown shimmer), Couture (dark brown matte), It List (black matte), Nuit (deep charcoal metallic).  This palette was designed by Lisa Eldridge who was inspired by the streets of Paris. It’s the kind of palette that takes you from day to night, from running errands or going to work to a soiree. After seeing so much hype about the palette I instantly bought it during a Lancome GWP and I’m glad that I did.

TOM FORD NUDE DIP ($80)

I reviewed this much loved palette (here) so you can see fresh pictures of it. This contains a light gold, a light rose gold, a medium taupe and a chocolate brown. It’s my one and only TF palette and if they were all like this without glitter but lots of sheen, I’d own them all.

BUTTER LONDON NATURAL CHARM ($39)*

butter LONDON now has eyeshadows called Shadow Clutches and I’m loving it. There are two ShadowClutch palettes – Natural Charm and Pretty Proper.  The shades in Natural Charm are Linen (Matte Vanilla), Quartz (Warm Beige Sheen), Camo (Dark Khaki Sheen), Camel (Matte Nude), Citrine (Coral Sheen), Leather (Matte Chocolate Brown. These are primer infused and the pigments are great. A full review is on the way.

MAKEUP REVOLUTION LONDON in MERMAIDS FOREVER ($15)*

Makeup Revolution in Mermaids Forever

Makeup Revolution in Mermaids Forever

This beautiful Ulta exclusive has 32 shades that will satisfy the needs of everyone. I know it’s early for Christmas presents but this would be a delight for any makeup lover to find in a pile of gifts. It’s affordable enough that you can buy it for gifts and one for yourself. While the theme is Mermaids with its beautiful blues, teals, and greens you’ll also find a bevy of neutrals. Makeup Revolution is a UK brand that only came to the US at Ulta stores in the summer. No swatches yet of this but they’ll be coming.

BUXOM CUSTOMIZABLE PALETTES ($40)

a Buxom Customizable Palette made by me

a Buxom Customizable Palette made by me

buxom customizable palette

buxom customizable palette

After using a buxom Customizable Palette and finding the pigmentation to be utterly amazing, I just had to put together one in the neutral family. Be sure you buy this in one bundle since separately the eyeshadows ($12 each) and empty palette would be $112. The colors in my palette are Champagne Buzz (shimmering pearl), Haute Couture (metallic java), Jetsetter (matte greige), Satin Seduction (Bisque Luster), Mix & Mingle (matte vanilla), Style Icon (Mettalic Taupe). I think you’ll have better luck finding these at Sephora since they are selling like hotcakes online.

SLEEK MAKEUP i-DIVINE STORM PALETTE ($11.99)*

Sleek Makeup Storm Palette

Sleek MakeUP Storm Palette

Sleek is another brand from the UK and is one of the most coveted brands from there. There are a lot of Sleek MakeUP iDivine palettes and I was lucky to get Storm which was one I’ve been eager to try. The shades are Sand Storm (golden brown, Snow Storm (lighter gold), Calm Before the Storm (matte beige, Thunder Storm (brassy gold), Perfect Storm (rose gold), Firestorm (bronze), Dust Storm (deeper bronze), Gathering Storm (dark pewter), Storm Cloud (teal pewter), Electric Storm (shimmery navy), Eye of the Storm (matte light brown), Blackout (matte black). What I love about this palette is that there’s a mix of matte and satin shades. Full review will follow.

MAKE UP FOR EVER 9 ARTIST SHADOW PALETTE VOLUME 1 (NUDES YOU NEED) ($42)

Make Up For Ever 9 Shadow Artist Palette volume 1

Make Up For Ever 9 Shadow Artist Palette volume 1

Make Up For Ever’s 9 Shadow Artist Palette is the oldest one in this group. Did I need another neutral palette? Of course not and at first I was a little sorry I bought it. But once I started using it I realized there were some shades that I really liked. These shades are available individually but putting 9 in a palette makes it a better buy. The shades are (going down the rows) I-528 Pearl, S-556 Taupe Gray, S-102 Onyx, I-514 Pink Ivory, D-562 Taupe Platinum, I-544 Pink Granite, ME-512 Golden Beige, ME-644 Iced Brown, D-652 Celestial Earth so it runs the gamut of finishes. I get the most use out of Pearl, Pink Ivory, Pink Granite, Golden Beige and Iced Brown. The two shades marked D (diamond) are too glittery for me) and I don’t line with black so Onyx is pristine. But 6 out of this palette makes this a buy I no longer regret.

Taking a dip with Tom Ford Nude Dip eyeshadow palette

Tom Ford Eyeshadow Palette

Tom Ford Eyeshadow Palette

I’m having a summer love affair and I hope it extends into fall and winter. This affair is with Tom Ford’s Nude Dip Eyeshadow Palette. I didn’t want to fall in love, I didn’t even want to meet this guy, I wanted to stick with my beautiful and less expensive palettes. But an $80 Nordstrom Reward certificate was coming to its end date and Helen (Lola’s Secret Beauty Blog) was tempting me as usual with her amazing review. You obviously know what happened which is why you are reading this. I caved and spent that $80 on Tom Ford Nude Dip instead of the shoes I really needed. I ain’t gonna apologize because this is fabulous.

Tom Ford Nude Dip (03) Eyeshadow Palette

Tom Ford Nude Dip (03) Eyeshadow Palette

This is everything I wanted Tom Ford palettes to be and a little more. There are no glitter shades in this but there is a beautiful shimmer to each one of these shadows. My eyes sparkle when I wear this. In my magnifying mirror I do see the shimmer but it’s not fall out shimmer, it stays on my eyes where it belongs. I’ve seen this described as frosty and I guess it can be but you know what – I don’t care!

The bottom two shadows are a delicious taupe and a darker brown but one that’s not too dark. It fits in with the theme of “nude dip” perfectly. It’s not sooty like some browns can be.

These shadows glide on and feel very creamy. I use a brush like MAC 242 and 217 that doesn’t pack these on so the colors stay true. They blend with ease and no matter what combination I use, I’m always happy. The palette is a repromote from 2014 and I am bowing down to the company for this rerelease. It is now part of the permanent collection but I still wouldn’t wait to buy this if you have been thinking of a splurge. After all you don’t want to lose out on the last vestiges of summer beauty at its best. — Marciatom ford nude dip arm

Makeup Wars Glow time starring Charlotte Tilbury, Tom Ford, Becca and Youngblood

What's in these Makeup Wars packages?

What’s in these Makeup Wars packages?

Makeup Wars Glow cream products from Youngblood, Charlotte Tilbery and Tom Ford

Makeup Wars Glow cream products from Youngblood, Charlotte Tilbery and Tom Ford

Today’s Makeup Wars is all about summer highlighters, bronzers and glowing products. As someone who doesn’t tan and rarely even uses bronzers I have to be all about the glow. The 6 products I love for this all happen to be creams that I haven’t shared with you yet (or much).

I love cream products since I believe they can be less aging on me. I’m lucky that they wear well on me too and for the most part don’t fade away. When I was in the midst of crazy hot flashes I had to step away from a lot of powder products because they’d look awful after I finally stopped flashing. That’s when I started trusting cream products more. Yes they’ll fade after a major flash but they don’t look cakey on me and they are easy to repair.

Out of my slew of cosmetics I picked some that I’ve been using a lot in the last month and that I know will continue to serve me during the summer.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY is a brand I’d been lusting after for a very long time. When it became available in the US (Nordstrom.com and CharlotteTilbury.com) I sort of froze since the amount of products were overwhelming to me. I purchased a few here and there but it was when the Eyes to Mesmerise Cream Eyeshadows  ($32) were released that I knew it was time for me to splurge. I currently have Jean (also known as Norma Jean) and Marie Antoinette but Verushka is on its way to me too.

Charlotte Tilbury Jean and Marie Antoinette

Charlotte Tilbury Jean and Marie Antoinette

Charlotte Tilbury Jean and Marie Antoinette

Charlotte Tilbury Jean and Marie Antoinette

Jean/Norma Jean is the one I’ve been wearing the most and I absolutely adore it. I start with an eyeshadow primer and let it set for a while. Then with my finger I apply the color smoothing it lightly over my entire eye most days. Before I do anything else I let it set longer since I’ve read that some people get creasing with it. I never have and I’ve used them a dozen times. This applies lighter and more golden than CT’s swatches because I sheer them out. I love to wear Norma Jean with some brown or khaki eyeshadows in the outer corner. Jean a gorgeous, sparkling-pink champagne inspired by the iconic beauty Marilyn Monroe.”

Charlotte Tilbury Norma Jean

Charlotte Tilbury Norma Jean

Marie Antoinette is an antique oyster gold hue inspired by the hypnotizing beauty of the infamous Queen of France according to the website. I find that it looks deeper in the jar and on my finger swatches than it does on my eyes. I like to wear this alone on my lid for an easy summer look but it’s just as beautiful anyway I use it.

After my perfect glowy eyes are applied I need to do my face. During a previous Makeup Wars and Top Ten Tuesday post every blogger except for me raved about BECCA BRONZING SKIN PERFECTOR GEL ($36). Well that couldn’t be. If they all loved it that much then I wasn’t going to be left out. This is wonderful for this very pale blogger who keeps out of the sun. I can mix it into my foundation for a perk me up when I’m feeling wan or I can spot use it to act as my bronzer. It’s a cream to powder formula that is infused with pearls to make it more radiant. It’s not glittery though, it’s just glowy. It loves me and I love it.

YOUNGBLOOD COSMETICS makes LUMINOUS CREME BLUSH ($27*) that I love to pieces. These are staples for me and I even have backups. Two that are ideal for summer are Champagne Life and Tropical Glow. I use them all year round but they get more love in summer. What makes these so special is their texture. They are very firm to the touch and never are tacky on me. They are among the longest lasting cream blushes I own. Champagne Life  looks darker in the pan than it appears on me. I use this as a champagne highlighter at the top of my cheekbones. I love pairing it with Tropical Glow too. Tropical Glow is a peachy pink glow that has become one of my true loves. They say it has golden shimmer but it’s the kind of shimmer that’s embedded within so that you just see the special color it creates.

Youngblood Luminous Creme Blush in Tropical Glow and Champagne Life

These are oil free so they won’t clog pores. They contain Vitamins C and E which work together to help protect against oxidative stress. They are extremely emollient due to the Jojaba Esters.

TOM FORD CREAM CHEEK COLOR in PINK SAND ($65) is my absolute splurge item. The more I saw it on other blogs the more I wanted it. I’ve resisted a ton of Tom Ford products because of the price but I just had to have this peachy pink cream blush.

The elegant white packaging, the Tom Ford name, the Nordstrom description “Tom Ford Cream Cheek Color instantly brightens your face for a healthy glow and a natural burst of color. The pearlized, peach-pink shade gives cheeks gorgeous luster and a stunning radiant finish.” and triple points on my CC all added up to me owning this. It’s a very light blush and it’s not long lasting but I don’t care. I’m happy to reapply this. It’s limited edition along with the rest of their summer collection and I didn’t want to regret not owning this.
