I finished things! Amazing empties for March and April

It seems so rare for me to finish anything up completely other than a few staples but the last two months I actually did finish things and I’m ready for the dumpster with these. Until then see what got used up and what I think of these goodies.

March and April 2017 empties

March and April 2017 empties

Before I begin I must admit that I already threw away oodles and oodles of products. As I’m cleaning and packing I found so many that were started but never finished so I only kept the ones I really loved and tried to use those as much as possible. What you aren’t seeing is the trash that my neighborhood has seen!

Let me start with some staple items that I go through every single month and will continue to do so.

Q-tips and DHC Silky Cotton Squares

Q-tips and DHC Silky Cotton Squares

Costco knows me and my habits I’m sure. I buy these double packs of Q-Tips all the time. I use a lot of them in my life so buy stock in the company! I also have gone an unimaginable amount of DHC Silky Cotton Squares. I usually buy 6 at a time and they’ll last me for about 7 months. I noticed though that my last batch isn’t quite as soft as before so now I’m questioning whether they changed them. Anyone know?

Viviscal

Viviscal

I’m on auto-delivery from Amazon for these Viviscal Hair Supplements. I am on a maintenance dose and just take 1 per day rather than 2. I’ve mentioned many times about my hair growth problems and these help me a lot.

Bioderma Micellar Water, Dr. Brandt XYY Dual Fusion Water, Simple Micellar Wipes

Bioderma Micellar Water, Dr. Brandt XYY Dual Fusion Water, Simple Micellar Wipes

It’s obvious that I love Micellar Waters from this picture! I have a stash of Bioderma Sensibio H2O and made a point of finishing up the 500 ml and 100 ml bottles before I move. I have 1 more of each in my cupboard but won’t start those just yet. I did pick up a Garnier Micellar during a sale not long ago but that’s already packed and I also like Simple Micellar Water though I’ve noticed a slight fragrance with it. Simple Micellar Wipes are definitely my favorite wipes though. This is just a sample pack but I have a full size pack in use.

Dr. Brandt XYY Dual Fusion Water is one that I really enjoyed using but it is more expensive than these others. It feels more substantial though and it did a great job of cleansing.

Eclair Naturals Liquid Hand Soap, Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

Eclair Naturals Liquid Hand Soap, Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

I couldn’t begin to count how many Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Removers I’ve gone through since my first one. No matter how many others I try this is the one product that works for me time and again. I’ve already repurchased this and will again as soon as I move.

Eclair Naturals Liquid Hand Soap in Vanilla & Sweet Orange is a great natural soap that’s not drying. I’m stocked up on JR Watkins at the moment but I’ll repurchase this next.

Now for the fun stuff!

Miss Spa Oxygenating Bubble Mask and 24K Gold Creme Mask

Miss Spa Oxygenating Bubble Mask and 24K Gold Creme Mask

I’m not used to saving empties so in the past I never had them around. I purposely saved the packaging of Miss Spa Oxygenating Bubble Mask and 24K Gold Creme Mask since I totally love them. The 24K Gold Creme Mask is one I want to marry. The Oxygenating Bubble Mask was a fun bubbly alternative. I got three uses out of each package so it’s a bargain buy. I will definitely buy more after I test more of the Miss Spa masks I have.

Reviva Labs Vitamin C+ Antioxidant Serum, Hydroskin, IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Lines Serum

Reviva Labs Vitamin C+ Antioxidant Serum, Hydroskin, IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Lines Serum

I think I finished up Reviva Labs Vitamin C+ Serum but there might be a little left. Nothing pumps out anymore and I only see a drop inside. Reviva Labs is a favorite brand and this is a good example of why I like them. Very efficient and the price is great.

Hydroskin Skincare is a set I reviewed last month. I finished up all 4 of these products which is unusual for me but I dedicated myself to one solid month of just this line. I liked the way my skin looked with it. I still have 2 masks from them to use and review.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Lines Serum is ab fab! Not only do I love this anti-aging serum but I bought a new one before I was finished with the current one. This is my favorite skincare item from IT Cosmetics. I wish the price was less but I’ll continue buying and using this. I’m in love!

It’s a given that any time I would share an empty post that I’d have mascara. This time though I saved them after determining what needed to go before the big move. I found a lot of deluxe sample sizes and used them until dry or I didn’t care for them anymore.

In no particular order:

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara  –  always a favorite, I have another mini and a full size one still

Marc Jacobs Volume Mascara– while I liked the sample size from a kit I had bought I didn’t care for the full size one I had bought so it’s not to be purchased again.

Le Volume de Chanel  –  Love this even if this was tiny. I would buy it if I was flush.

2 more minis I forgot to picture: Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara which I loved and plan to buy one day soon. Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes, another dilemma since the sample was great but I wasn’t thrilled when I had it in full size.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum – love, love, love this. It’s a perfect brown liquid eyeliner. This is the second one I’ve finished and I’m using my third. There will be a 4th and 5th for sure.

Smashbox Brow Tech To Go – while I didn’t use up the gel side I did use up every bit of the brow crayon side. It’s a very handy item but I just don’t need another right now.

IT Cosmetics No-Tug Waterproof Eyeliner in Black is one I enjoyed until it decided to break so I couldn’t use it anymore. I like these liners in general though and turn to them often when I want a pencil eyeliner.

A 3x use sample of Too Faced Shadow Insurance that was in my stash. I always have TFSI in my collection!

And one toss:

Z Palette

Z Palette

I got a few years worth of use from this but then it self-destroyed. It came apart and no longer is of use. I have others plus Z Palette is out of favor right now.

So there you have it. My empties, many of which are old standbys and a new love (Stila Huge Mascara) all wrapped up in my recycling bin for now.

What have you used up? —  Marcia

Makeup Wars perks up your eyes

MAKEUP WARS is all about eyes today, expanding from the typical to the somewhat atypical. Ways to perk up your eye makeup can be as simple or bold as wearing a colorful mascara as well as changing up your eyeliner from your typical black or dark brown. I’ve chosen my favorite colorful eyeliners to share with you since a day without eyeliner for me is a day my eyes disappear.

STILA GOT INKED CUSHION EYE LINER is my new favorite eyeliner. Yes I do play favorites and right now the play is with these very cool cushion eye liners. This is a liquid eyeliner unlike any you’ve used. It comes in a pot with the liquid under a cushion top. Use your favorite brush (I prefer a very thin one) and press it onto the webbed sponge top and you’ve got your color. Stila compares it to using a calligraphy pen that you dip into the sponge. These don’t seem like they’ll spill. I first bought it in Smoky Quartz Ink and after using it twice I knew I needed another so along came Copper Ink. Both are within my comfort zone but on the edge of it. You can go thick or thin, you can draw cat eyes, you can do anything your heart desires and the color will last. It comes in 6 shades (Black Obsidian, Amethyst, Blue Sapphire, Garnet plus Smoky Quartz and Copper).

Stila Got Inked Cushion Eye Liners

Stila Got Inked Cushion Eye Liners

Smoky Quartz Ink is a pewter taupe that is metallic and will take on the colors of your eye makeup depending on the light. While there’s no glitter in it, it looks that way because of the high shine. When I wear this with a gold and khaki combination it seems to pick up that khaki undertone. Copper Ink isn’t quite as metallic but it’s far from flat. It’s stunning with a variety of browns but when it really looks unique is wearing it with eyeshadow in the navy family. Copper Ink is making me shop my stash for new looks.

I’m a huge fan of liquid eyeliners but they are not all created equal. The length and sturdiness of the brush are the keys for me finding the ones I love. While I don’t wear pencil eyeliners that often I’ve found that Pur Minerals (now Pur Cosmetics) has a combination that has the best of both worlds. DOUBLE EGO EYELINERS are liquid on one end and pencil on the other end. Use separately or combine for great looks.

Pur Minerals Double Ego liners

Pur Minerals Double Ego liners

Look at those colors! Milan (inky black), Tasmania (dark chocolate), Madagascar (black gold), Bora Bora (royal blue), Swiss Alps (cool pewter), Rio de Janeiro (deep plum), Bali (emerald green), and Queensland (aquatic teal). While I mostly wear Tasmania I’ve been known to wear Swiss Alps (pewter) and Rio de Janiero (plum) to shake it up a bit. These are amazing eyeliners.

Last but far from least on my list are the YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID EYELINER PENS. These are available in 5 shades that are beautiful and go beyond black. The brush is what makes these so wonderful. For me they glide on and last, rarely going astray. I’ve bought backups of Marron since it’s an amazing brown eyeliner. Gris (soft grey) and Verde (dark forest green) are unique to my eyeliner collection.

Think Pink with Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush

Think pink

Think pink

The hardest thing about Stila’s Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush is picking a color you want to buy. Everything else is super easy since it’s a cinch to use and wear.

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush in Water Lily

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush in Water Lily

There are 5 shades available and the online swatches all looked beautiful so I took a stab in the dark and picked Water Lily since it looked fresh and vibrant.

Stila Water Lily Aqua Blush (beauty.com)

Stila Water Lily Aqua Blush (beauty.com)

This Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush is totally different than any blush product I own because it really is watery. The formula says it’s a water based gel but I find it more watery than gel-like. It’s packaged in a small jar with a mesh top. You need to shake it very well and then be careful with the amount of product you use.

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush mesh top

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush mesh top

It feels like nothing when you apply it yet you will feel a slight cooling effect. This is a sheer blush that you can build up but my advice is to start with a very small amount, dab it on your cheek where you typically use blush. Then do the other cheek. Now stand back and check your face. If it’s not enough then go back and build it up but not too much.

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush in Water Lily

Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush in Water Lily

Water Lily is a warm pink shade (although beauty.com calls it a rose pink) that goes on sheer but lasts well throughout the day. I’d say I get about 6 – 8 hours wear before needing to refresh it. It’s a great blush if you have “Disappearing Blush Problem” aka DBP. People who are affected by DBP find their blush vanishes easily. But using this Stila Aqua Glow as a base and then following up with a powder is the answer to longer lasting blush. While this is not a medically proven problem, it really does happen to too many people. I’m working on a foundation to study this phenomenon (not).

I’m not sure if I’ll buy another shade of this or not but I am attracted to the coolness of Water Blossom described as Pink Violet.

The liquid eyeliner quest – part 1 starring L’Oreal, Stila, Milani and Lorac

I’m on a mission to find fabulous brown liquid eyeliners. It feels like an “impossible mission” at times. There are actually a lot available but at the time of writing this review I’ve yet to find one I’m crazy about. I can’t figure out why there are so many great black liquid eyeliners but brown isn’t around. My goal is to find a brown that’s truly brown – no black browns since those just look black on me. No red browns since the red isn’t attractive. For this mission I’ll be doing a series of reviews about my quest. I’ll surely stick in a brown pencil eyeliner every once in a while plus some black ones too.

To start with I searched my drawers and came up with 4. Some I’d bought and hadn’t opened, some were a little older.

L'Oreal Lineur Intense (loreal.com)

L’Oreal Lineur Intense (loreal.com)

L'Oreal Liner Intense in Earthen Rock Brown

L’Oreal Liner Intense in Earthen Rock Brown

1)      L’Oreal Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Liner in Earthen Rock Brown ($8.99) is a great eyeliner but it’s not brown-brown; it’s really a black brown. I bought this because everyone was recommending the Lancome Artliner and I wanted something I could get immediately and that was less expensive. I’m glad I waited before buying L’Oreal’s other liquid (Telescopic Precision) since the brown is going to be this dark too. If you don’t mind a very dark brown liquid eyeliner though, I do like this. It goes on smoothly, evenly and is long lasting. You just have to remember to shake it well before using.

Milani Eye Tech (milani.com)

Milani Eye Tech (milani.com)

Milani Eye Tech in brown

Milani Eye Tech in brown

2)      Milani Eye Tech Liquid Liner ($7.49)  is a mini eyeliner size wise. It’s only 3 ¼ inches long. This comes in either black or brown. It’s a gorgeous brown. I love love love the color since it shows up brown. I have two problems with it though. First is that the size makes it uncomfortable to use but I can live with that. The second problem is that it takes absolutely forever to dry. It feels wet for more than 5 minutes on me. I’m sitting there trying to keep my eyes wide open for so long. I’ll definitely keep on using it but only when I have extra time. Unfortunately this is the only liquid they make in brown.

Stila Waterproof All Day Liquid Liner (sephora.com)

Stila Waterproof All Day Liquid Liner (sephora.com)

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in brown

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in brown

3)      Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($20) in Dark Brown – well you already know what I’m going to say. It’s dark brown all right but really dark brown. It barely shows any brown on me. I’m not crazy about the applicator. Mine is a little wobbly plus it doesn’t flow as smoothly as I wish. Therefore I can’t get the line as thin as I’d like. It makes me realize I like a very firm applicator point on liquids.

Lorac Front of the Line Pro liner (sephora.com)

Lorac Front of the Line Pro liner (sephora.com)

Lorac Front of the Line PRO in brown

Lorac Front of the Line PRO in brown

4)      Lorac Front of the Line PRO ($23) – I bought this on sale from Ulta for $11 when they had one of their beauty events. Lorac comes in black, charcoal and brown. I know I’m sounding like a whiny person so I’ll say some nice things about this liner. It’s truly brown. Yea for that. The packaging is shiny silver and aesthetically appealing. So what’s the problem? The brush isn’t stiff enough therefore it needs 2 or 3 passes which means I can’t keep the line thin enough. I always screw up and have a bump in the road.

eyeliner swatches: L'Oreal, Milani, stila, Lorac

5)      Milani Liquid Eye ($6.99) – oops! I was at CVS and had a reward coupon and I saw the words “Liquid Eye” and it was brown. Did I look carefully enough to see that it then said “Liquid-Like Eye Liner Pencil”? Did I look at the point and see a pencil point (off kilter at that)? No, I just used my reward and bought it. Now I will tell you that I like it and it’s worth the money. It’s a great brown shade. It goes on smoothly. It lasts very well once it sets. But it doesn’t help my “mission impossible.”

Part 1 doesn’t seem to have a clear winner but there are also no true losers either. Each has something good about it, each has something for me to complain about. I do think that L’Oreal Liner Intense has the edge though so I’d declare this the winner with a “but”. Have you tried any of these 5 liners? Do you have a suggestion for me in my quest? Stay tuned for this mission to continue. — Marcia

The $50 blogger challenge plus a bonus giveaway

I have to thank Coupons. com for offering this great post. A group of bloggers were given $50 e-gift cards to one of three beauty emporiums. Mine was Sephora. I was let loose on Sephora.com with $50 to spend!!! Whoopee! I got right to work making a list of things I wanted and of course it was long. The challenge from coupons.com was to create at least 2 looks using the $50. I labored over this and finally decided that I wanted to prove that Sephora.com can provide a bag full of goodies for that money. Sephora doesn’t carry drugstore items, they carry what is called prestige brands. We often feel like they are so expensive but look what I got with my e-certificate from coupons. com.

Coupons.com haul: Stila, Kat VonD

Coupons.com haul: Stila, Kat Von D

I bought two Stila travel palettes which are normally $16 each but are on sale at Sephora.com for $10 plus 3 Kat Von D Waterproof Eyeliner pencils $10 each). I also had a code (sephora.com shows current codes on their website) for a free YSL Shocking mascara. I’ve got everything I need for eyes, lips and cheeks with these.

The first of the two Stila palettes is Vibrant in Vancouver which is comprised of the following colors of eyeshadows: English Boy (satin light beige), Cypress (shimmery light brown), Granville (matte light chocolate), Seaplane (shimmery olive) and Coal Harbour (matte dark brown). The convertible lip and cheek cream in Tiger Lily is a shimmery rose-brown.

Stila Vibrant in Vancouver

Stila Vibrant in Vancouver

These are the typical neutral colors that I wear all the time. I picked this palette for a few reasons – 1) I’m loving olive greens at the moment, 2) I always feel good in browns and beiges and 3) I had a feeling that the convertible color would work well for me. This is a good palette for my everyday type looks plus when I start with a base like a Maybelline Tattoo I can change the looks even more.

The other palette I picked is Rockin’ in Rio which turned into a surprise favorite. I chose it to add variety but it turns out I really like this and it will stay in my rotation. The eye shadows are Copacabana (satin pale beige), Samba (satin medium beige), Bossa Nova (shimmery light greyish brown), Carnavale (shimmery greyish black) and Ipanema (shimmery midnight blue). The convertible color is called Freesia and it’s a great candy pink that I like on my lips as well as my cheeks.

The three pencils I bought are by Kat Von D and were highly recommended by a friend. They are the Waterproof Autograph Pencils which cost just $10 each – I bought 3  since I wanted to be able to change my look. The shades I have are Piaf (purplish gray with multicolor sparkle), Napolitano (bronze with gold sparkle) and Black Metal (black with silver sparkle). I guess I was in a sparkly mood. These aren’t full size pencils, they are half size which is great for someone with a collection my size and for trying out new colors.

While the challenge was for two looks I was able to create much more than that depending on the placement of the eyeshadow or the eyeliner I chose. Each eyeliner worked with two palettes plus I was able to dampen shadows in the palettes for eyeliners too. The bonus YSL mascara is not one that worked for me. I didn’t get shocking lashes, I felt that my lashes stuck together too much and I didn’t see anything other than some definition. But what a great way to know since it was a bonus code.

Now for some looks:

Makeup Wars is in Valentine’s Day mode

Makeup Wars is tackling Valentine’s Day. Makeup Wars is such a special post for me because it’s a shared post between some bloggers I deeply admire. Today 11 of the “warriors” are showing you their favorites for a Valentine’s Day look. I debated and debated about what to wear for this post and then again on Valentine’s Day and decided to go with my latest Le Metier de Beaute kaleidoscope. (It’s not the newest one available, that’s Bauhaus.) Nouvelle Vague spoke to me for a very long time but I kept resisting buying it until one day when Josie (aka Joey Bunny) called me from Bergdorf Goodman about a special gift with purchase – my 3 favorite words!! Once she put that into my mind I couldn’t get it out of it so with many discussions between us I decided to give into the Nouvelle Vague lemming and added in a gloss in Cannes to get closer to my gift. Thus began my Valentine’s face of the day.

Valentine's Day products from Le Metier de Beaute and Stila

Valentine’s Day products from Le Metier de Beaute and Stila

Nouveau Vague is housed in a beautiful silver kaleidoscope and has 4 shades that work together delightfully as well as apart. For years I barely wore anything other than the shades in it so it’s nice to go back and revisit some favorite types of color. If you notice cinema words in the descriptions it’s because when it was put together it was considered to be a Film Noir look by its creator, Mickey Castillo.

Le Metier de Beaute Nouvelle Vague kaleidoscope

Le Metier de Beaute Nouvelle Vague kaleidoscope

The top shade is Nouvelle described as a sheer mink negative. I’m not so sure what’s negative about it because I can only come up with positives. To me it’s a peachy pink that absolutely glows. It’s gorgeous not just for this quartet but as a highlight or lid shade.

Nouvelle from Le Metier de Beaute

The second shade is Gamine “satin pink celluloid”.  Gamine is a true pink with a satin finish. The pigmentation on Gamine is the best in this set.

Gamine from Nouvelle Vague

Third shade is named Icon and is considered a silky matte Parisian Mauve. When I first swatched it I saw a lot of the lilac that makes up this mauve. It’s unlike most mattes in its wonderful texture.

Icon from Nouvelle Vague

On the bottom is Fin, a smoldering black carbon. I’ve tried a lot of black shadows but nothing beats the blackness of Fin. It’s pretty amazing. I have to use a softer brush like the MAC 217 or it obliterates my eye. It’s a fabulous deep dark black but watch for fallout. I love this shade but I make sure I have nothing else on my face and lots of eye makeup remover nearby when I first use it.

Once I had my eye picked out I chose my lip since I had bought the Sheer Brilliance Lip Gloss in Cannes at the same time. I wanted a soft lip since I knew I was going to be wearing a well defined eye. Cannes is a very soft pink with subtle shimmer. I also have Cannes Colour Core Moisture Stain lipstick so I can couple them if I want for a more in-depth lip look.

Next was blush. I wanted to stay with LMdB but I absolutely can’t find my pink Crème Fresh tints but I’ll be looking for Mystique for V Day. Instead I pulled out the beautiful Stila Love at First Blush since it has HEARTS on it. I still love this even a whole year later!! This has great pinks for my Valentine’s look.

Now I’d love to carry out the pink theme even more but I always wear red nails on Valentine’s Day and this year won’t be an exception. I’m wearing Ozotic 621 which is a red that will stop traffic. Llarowe, where I bought it, describes it as “red sparkle high impact holographic nail polish”.  While I thought it was shimmery at first I’ve since realized that it reminds me of sparkle being suspended between two sheer jelly-like layers. The polish isn’t sheer, as a matter of fact I could have gotten away with 1 coat, it’s that rich. Red polish on Valentine’s Day is a look that I’ve worn for the last 25 years and hope to continue forever more.
