Treats Under Ten – Every Drop, Hard Candy & Andrea Eye-Q’s

Treats under Ten

I’ve come across several items that I’ve been enjoying and want to share with you. I hope to write Treats under Ten as a monthly contribution and I’m finding that to be easier and easier with some of the great items available in the drugstores, Walmart and online. Today I have 4 for you. Be sure you keep reading since I’m saving the best for last.

Let’s start at Walmart and Hard Candy. There are so many treats there to keep us busy. Take a look at this great display I found there.

Two of my newest Hard Candy items are from their 2011 Fall Collection: World Balmanation (what a great name!) and Stay in Line Eyeliner

World Balmanation is a collection of 8 lightly tinted balms that cost – you aren’t going to believe this – $3 each. The packaging alone is worth $3. Each one is slightly different in looks and all are just adorable. They’d also make a great gift for a young girl too since they are moisturizing without imparting too much color. I have this in Lovestruck which looks like a dark pink but goes on very softly. It’s lightly lemon scented and very moisturizing. A sweet treat.

Hard Candy’s Stay in Line eyeliners are available in 6 shades and are only $5 each. One side is the retractable liner (no sharpening necessary) and the other side holds the smudger.  I have the purple, Sigali, which is a bright beautiful shade with some shimmer in it. Each of these liners is infused with growth serum to help with long term lash growth according to My advice with this liner is to warm it up slightly on your hand before you apply it to your eyes, then it glides on beautifully.

A great drugstore treat is from Andrea Eye Q’s: Eye Makeup Correctors. These travel friendly sticks are perfect for removing eye makeup, especially stubborn eyeliners. These come in a pack of 50 and sell for under $5. I like to use them if I make a mistake when putting on eye makeup or stick a few in a mini Ziploc bag when I take a trip. They are oil-free and fragrance free so they don’t sting my eyes. Plus the formula isn’t greasy at all so you can fix and then continue. These are easy to use and fabulous for an emergency!

Now for the best – this is a new discovery and I’m in love with it. It’s called EVERY DROP BEAUTY SPATULA. I needed capitals because I’m shouting that you need this.

Every Drop Beauty Spatula

Every Drop Beauty Spatula

I’m cheating a little because they really cost $14.99 but you get 2 for that cost plus you also receive 3 cosmetic containers with it from their website. Every Drop is the most ingenious invention I’ve seen lately. It’s a spatula like you’d use in your kitchen except the top is only 2 cm long and 1 cm wide. You use it to remove all the precious drops of beauty products that are stuck in your containers. This is the first product that my husband actually noticed. I was in shock. His reaction was “why didn’t someone think of this before” plus he wanted to steal it from me. No way Jose. This is so perfect for just about every beauty product that I own. No more wasting skincare, foundation, hand creams, even getting the last of the lipstick out of the tube. It gets the bottom, sides and the “shoulder” of the bottles. It’s washable and keeps things bacteria free.  This is the treat to end all treats. I absolutely need a few of these to make my life complete, yes I exaggerate sometimes, but I really do need a few of these. You’ll want one and you’ll need one for whoever plans on stealing it from you when they see this!

I hope you enjoyed my Treats under Ten. Let me know if you have any ideas of other treats I can share with you next month. — Marcia

Making summer easier, part 3 – Aveeno, Youngblood, Black

Part 3 of my “making summer easier” reviews goes from the top of my head straight on down.

I’m starting with sunscreen since I believe it’s so vital for all of us. I stand out in the summer because I’m so pale. I’ve never been someone that could tolerate the sun. I had lots of horrible sunburns growing up and I never wanted to go through that again. I know some of my friends look wonderful with their beautiful golden bodies and faces but it’s just not for me. I religiously wear sunscreen. For my body I’ve been using Aveeno this past summer. After attending the Aveeno and Rite Aid Road to Healthy Skin event I became even more conscientious about using sunscreen. I’ve got two Aveeno Sunscreens that are in daily use. For lotion I’ve been using CONTINUOUS PROTECTION SUNBLOCK LOTION SPF 55. This is oil free and absorbs into my skin without leaving me feel greasy. I appreciate that it’s waterproof even though I’m not a beach babe but I do get warm and wet all the time. Aveeno Sunscreens contain Active Natural ingredients such as soy and anti-oxidants like Vitamin E. I also occasionally use HYDROSPORT Sunblock Spray SPF 50. The spray is very refreshing when I’m outside and isn’t messy to apply. It contains both UVA and UVB protection. Aveeno can be found at all the major drugstores and stores like Target & Walmart and online at  They sell for about $10 each.

An item that isn’t on most people’s radar is a hair protectant that I’ve been using for the last 6 months. I bought it at my beauty salon and didn’t use it as much in the winter as I am now in the heat and humidity. It’s called BLACK and it’s a 15 in 1 Miracle Hair Treatment. Now I’m not so sure about the “miracle” part but it’s a product I’d like to recommend. I spray this onto my wet hair in a few places, I never use too much. Then I comb my hair to spread the spray throughout plus get it snarl free. It’s very lightweight so it never weighs my hair down. What it says it will do is – add shine – soften & smooth – detangle – prevent frizz & flyaways – moisturize – repairs dry, damaged hair – protects against heat styling – seals and protects hair color – prevents split ends – promotes scalp circulation – strengthens hair – stops hair breakage – enhances natural body – heals hair shaft – prevents scalp itch. WHEW!! I agree though that it does protect my hair against heat styling, adds shine, detangles, helps prevent frizz & flyaways and a whole lot more. It contains aloe vera, green tea leaf extract and keratin to help with the frizz. I’ve been noticing this in magazines lately too, it was just featured in Life & Style Weekly.  Black costs $20 online, my beauty salon charged a little more than that. (I just noticed that they sell a smaller bottle for $10.) I like the light feel and protection it gives my hair.

My last item makes me laugh. I am the person that people feel sorry for when shopping. MA’s come up to me with blotting papers and sprays since I get overheated so easily. They are always showing me what I need to cool myself down. When I was at the IMATS show along with about a million people around me (OK, I’m exaggerating, maybe it was only 10,000!) I was often shown miracle products to help with my problem. The one that really convinced me though was by YOUNGBLOOD,  Minerals in the Mist. This comes in 3 formulas. I ended up buying Recharge which is what I needed desperately at that point. The wonderful gentleman at the Youngblood display refreshed and recharged me when he sprayed this on me.  I’m sure he felt really sorry for me too.

I’ve written before about other sprays since it’s a product that I use at home and when I’m out & about. What makes Minerals in the Mist different though is the MINERALS in the product. Most of these sprays make you wonder if you are just overpaying for water but Youngblood’s contain blends of essential oils, minerals and vitamins to help with hydrating and protection. It’s great for spraying on after cleansing and prior to makeup for the protection and it’s great for setting your foundation. For me though it’s mostly used to give me life again. The three blends are Refresh (containing tangerine and grapefruit), Restore (containing grapefruit, lime & rosemary) and Recharge (containing mint and ginger). The 4 oz spray bottle costs $24.00 US.

Purified Water, Mentha Virdis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Zinziber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Peel Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid, Smithsonite Extract, Rhodochrosite Extract, Malachite Extract, Hematite Extract, Caprylyl Glycol.Sunscreen, hair care, facial mists – these keep me going this summer. They also are all so fast and easy to use that my time is spent in ways that are more fun than taking care of myself (not that I consider changing diapers as fun!). — Marcia

Making summer easier, part 2 – Clinique, Kiss Brows, Better Than Lips

This summer I’ve been finding myself reaching for a few things to make my life a little simpler. My personal schedule has changed and I don’t have as much time, especially in the mornings, to spend putting on cosmetics like I have in the past. I’ve been using a few items that make my routine quicker and easier and I’d like to share some of them with you.

1) I’ve owned Clinique’s All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage for over a year but it’s only lately that I’ve started to appreciate it. I purchased it ($26) during a GWP event since that’s the only time I purchase Clinique. I used it sporadically in the mornings or during the day. Recently though it’s become something I use most mornings. The rollerball has a cooling effect while it attempts to reduce puffiness and the look of fatique. It’s a temporary outcome but it’s enough to get me going in the morning and feel better about myself. I still use my Senna Lift and Lighten eye cream when applying makeup but this starts the ball rolling (pun intended). The cool metal ball refreshes my undereyes. Here’s what Clinique has to say: This instantly cooling rollerball helps massage away bags, refreshes and hydrates puffy eyes on contact. Brightens eye area immediately and over time. Combats dark circles, too. With caffeine, potent antioxidents and soothing botanicals. Oil-free, non-irritating, ophthalmologist tested.

2) You’ve mostly heard us talk about the company KISS as a nail company but they have a lot more products than just nails. One of my summer favorites is their TINTED BROW MARKER & PENCIL DUO. Kiss also makes one called Tinted Brow Gel & Pencil Duo. The one I’m reviewing has a marker end, sort of like a very thin Sharpie, and a retractable pencil end. There are two reasons this makes my summer list. 1) It’s easy to find and at the same time the price is great ($6.48). It’s always fun to walk into CVS, Walgreens or Walmart and walk out with a prize. (Online it’s available at Beauty Online Supply) 2) It’s fast and easy to use.

I have this in Dark Brown which unfortunately is the only shade it comes in. For me though that’s perfect since my hair is a very dark brown. As dark as the two ends are though, they look very natural on my eyebrows. The marker end is very pointed making it easy to draw in natural looking hairs if you are missing any. It dries very fast which is another plus. The pencil end is retractable and needs no sharpening. It glides on so easily that it’s become a summer quickie staple for me.

3) I’m not known for wearing lipstick all the time. I put it on and then forget about refreshing it – not a good admission for a beauty blogger. What I do like though is to have some lip balms around my house and in my purse. The two I’ve been using a lot lately are by BETTER THAN LIPS. The company that created these is Therapy Systems and they have two different lip balms. Better than Lips ($12) is a clear lip balm that is 100% natural and over 95% organic. It does have beeswax in it so if you are vegan be aware of that. I call Better Than Lips my “babysitting” balm because I can kiss my little grandson as much as I want and I leave no evidence behind. It leaves my lips conditioned and soft so he doesn’t have to deal with any chapped or rough lips. When he’s not around I use Even Better Than Lips  ($14) the tinted version. It just comes in one shade which gives just the slightest color to my lips. It’s definitely even better than my lips. I love the moisturizing effect that these have and to top it off there’s no annoying fragrance.

While I only had room to tell you about 3 items, all three are ones I recommend to make life easier this summer and every day. I’d love to hear what makes your life easier too. — Marcia

Side by Side – 10 top color items for 2011

Beauty Info Zone hasn’t done any top 10 lists lately and we’re way overdue. It was super hard to pick out of all the reviews we’ve done and narrow it down to only 10 products each so if we cheat a little, don’t be mad. We’ve both reviewed so many products that we reach for all the time. Here’s what’s standing out to Marcia and Lisa’s Top Ten for the first half of 2011.

  1. Rouge Bunny Rouge: Oh how I love my Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows. Here are two reviews that I’ve written about them. There will be more to come! Start with my first RBR post and then read this post.
  2. Illamasqua nail polish: I love my nail polishes and I have used so many that have won my heart. But Illamasqua are the ones I’m lusting after.
  3. Face Stockholm: All the Face Stockholm products I’ve tried have been absolutely wonderful but if I have to pick one to live with forever after it would be the Rio cream blush.
  4. Billion Dollar Brows: Here’s where I cheated. I know I said 10 items but I use the BDB brow powder and tweezers every single day so I have to include them both. I would be lost without these now.
  5. Tarte Inner Rim Brightener: Another product I use every single day; I even have two since I don’t want to be without this.
  6. Le Métier de Beaute’ Fresh Creme Tints: I have all of these and I love them to pieces. I’m a cream girl/lady/woman and these are so creamy. They double as blush and lip tints.
  7. Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes: Cheating again, more Tarte but I can’t help it. These are the longest lasting powder blushes I’ve ever tried. Every color is fabulous too.
  8. Armani Intense Eyes to Kill eyeshadows:  These are unique on the market and I love using them. I’m so sad I didn’t buy more which means I will be buying more!
  9. Face Atelier Lip Putty: I picked this over all the other great Face Atelier products because I use it constantly. It’s the best product I own to prime my lips.
  10. Dan Read foundation: I know Lisa is going to mention this but the more I thought about the list, the more I realized I couldn’t write my top ten without it.

  1. Dan Read eyeshadows:  Everything about Dan Read makes me happy, especially his foundation, but I’m in an eyeshadow kind of mood lately and these have won my heart.
  2. Vasanti Eye Products: Every single eye product that I use from Vasanti is wonderful. Eye Wonder is a fabulous eye cream and Vasanti’s Moon Dust Shimmer Powder is amazing.
  3. OCC pigments:  I have always loved pigments and my collection is huge. OCC pigments stand out though because they are top notch and I love them all but Artifact is the very best.
  4. Cargo eyeshadow palettes: I’m obviously on an eyeshadow kick lately and Cargo started this kick. Once I tried their palettes I became more obsessed with eyes than ever. Cool Neutral has gotten me through many work days because I know that even if I wake up late I’ll end up with a polished eye.
  5. Unii palettes: I’m in love with the amazing colors of Unii palettes. They bring a smile to the face of this serial depotter. Anyone who likes their eyeshadows and blushes in palette form needs a collection of these.
  6. Cargo Magic Brush: This is the brush I choose if I can only have one brush. It’s so soft and does such a magical job on my face.
  7. Face Stockholm color correcting foundation: I’ve been amazed with the Matte Foundation in Lilac. I never thought something like this would work but oh my goodness, it’s a fabulous addition to your foundations.
  8. Face Stockholm blush: Shambella matte blush has been my most used blush lately. The quality is terrific, so incredibly smooth and easy to blend.
  9. Illuminare eyeliner: I never thought that I’d fall so in love with an eyeliner but Illuminare Beyond Black has stolen my heart.
  10. Illuminare foundation: Illuminare makes several formulas of foundation and I refuse to pick a favorite; I can’t help but love Extra Coverage foundation/concealer and Mattifying Mineral foundation. Add in their Fast Application Pad and you have perfection.

We hope you’ve gotten to the end of this very long article. We each could have done a list of 20 but we have to stop at some point. We will be following up with another Side by Side with our top 10 on other types of products.

Did we hit any of your favorites in this list? — Marcia and Lisa

Mineral goodness from Pur Minerals

Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation with SPF 15 ($25) has been a favorite of mine for years.  It’s billed as the ‘one minute mineral makeup miracle’, which is completely true.  This is the easiest foundation to apply, just use a flat top chisel brush and sweep it on.  Foundation is done in less than a minute, and it looks fabulous.  Plus it provides SPF coverage, another bonus since I am not always vigilant about wearing sunscreen.

Above is the travel size version of the color I use, Blush Medium.  What I like about this foundation is it applies so quickly, gives great buildable coverage, and doesn’t irritate my skin even when it’s at its most sensitive.  While it’s pressed powder, it has a slightly moist texture so it doesn’t give me the dry look I get from a lot of mineral foundations, which instantly ages me about ten years.  The foundation has organic shea butter and Vitamin E in it, so it’s great for dry and oily skin alike.   This is a perfect foundation to take on a trip as it travels well.  It’s also fantastic for late day touch ups.  My only gripe is that it seems to run out very quickly.

Another Pur Minerals product I am loving now is the All Over Glow Face and Body Bronzer ($28).  This is HUGE, and it’s just beautiful.  It’s a jumbo version of the Mineral Glow Bronzing Powder.

It’s a very natural looking bronzer with golden tones, it has a very subtle golden shimmer.  I was a little scared at first thinking it would be too dark, but it goes on softly without the dreaded ‘dirty’ bronzer look.  It does work extremely well on the body too, just don’t put it too near clothes because the color will transfer.  The super large compact makes it easy to use a larger brush for the body.

Here is a swatch of the foundation and the bronzer.  You can just barely see the golden shimmer in the bronzer, which is good – it keeps the look on the natural and healthy side.

The Pur Minerals foundation and bronzer are two of my staples in my summer makeup kit.  What are some of your summer staples?  – Lisa

Facial gardens come to life with Garden Botanika

The best part of being a blogger for the past 13 months is learning about new brands and getting a chance to test them out. The best part of being a blogger for the past 13 months is revisiting old favorite brands and reminding myself what I loved about them. Obviously I can’t pick which is the best since both of these statements are true.  I’m learning so much about new and old loves.

The brand I’m revisiting in this article is Garden Botanika.  I have fond memories of shopping at the Garden Botanika store at my local mall. My sister and I would spend hours there deciding what things we couldn’t live without. When I went to work at Ulta I was thrilled to be able to play with Garden Botanika again.

One of my favorite products from GB was their Shadow Primer ($13). They were just about the first brand to come out with this and it was such a welcome addition to my makeup arsenal. I bought it again when I found it at Ulta but I’m not sure if I have the newest formulation of this. Here’s what GB tells us about the primer: “Make shadow last on and on. Re-formulated to glide on more smoothly, our primer combines oil-absorbing Kaolin and soothing Lavender Flower Wax to create a crease-proof, fade-proof, smudge-proof base. Emollient Meadowfoam and Shea Butter condition skin and prevent dryness and flakiness that can interfere with eye shadow.” Whether I have the newest one or the previous formula, I just know it changed how my eyeshadows lasted so it remains in my stash and gets pulled out to be used several times a month.

Now another primer has come into my life from Garden Botanika, She’s Prepped Mineral Foundation Primer ($20). The brand Garden Botanika was one of the very first to use natural products and they continue to do so.  She’s Prepped Mineral Foundation contains the following:

-Orchic Extract which enhances product application and leaves skin smooth.

-Silica minimizes shine.

-Vitamins C, E, and A help prevent signs of aging.

What makes She’s Prepped different from the other primers I’ve used is that this paraben free primer uses minerals to help make it a “miracle worker” for your skin. This is recommended for all skin types and for all foundation types (mineral, liquid and cream). Of course I’ve tried it with all three to test out their claims. I have to agree with them and say they are right. I’ve been wearing Dan Read cream foundation often lately and when I use She’s Prepped first I notice that it goes on even more smoothly than without the primer. I’ve used it with my Purely Minerals foundation and with several liquids (MAC Pro Longwear, Lancome Teint Miracle) lately with the same great results. GB tells us that it’s formulated to combat dry, flaky skin, uneven texture and enlarged pores. Anything that helps with my enlarged pores makes me happy. Yes it has silicones but that is what helps make the texture so silky. Once it’s on you don’t feel another layer on your skin, you just feel silky.

I’ve also been wearing Cherry Lip and Cheek Stain ($18).

I’m super lazy about reapplying lipstick and this lip and cheek stain makes life so easy for me. I make no bones about my love of cream blushes so that’s how this was used first. Cherry is the perfect description of this. It gives me a cherry flush that is so UNmadeup looking. It just looks natural on my cheeks. Even though it’s not winter it gives me that outdoorsy shade of cold cheeks. The best part is that it’s not sticky at all. Actually the texture is a little bit stiff at first but that makes it easy to apply. This contains silica to help absorb excess oils in your cheeks. As far as my lips, since there’s no fragrance and no sticky feeling, I usually put it on as soon as I’m done applying it as my blush. Whatever I might have in my purse later doesn’t clash with this either. The look is sheer and the application is easy.

Garden Botanika lovers can join their Garden Club and receive 15% off on their purchases but even without doing that their prices are excellent.  Garden Botanika has something for everyone from fragrance to bath & body to cosmetics to skincare. It’s time for us all to revisit this favorite brand. — Marcia

Some beauty inspired ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and a potted plant or a gift card are just so uninspired.  How about getting something fun and unique, something that really suits your mom’s personality this year?  Here are a few ideas beauty inspired ideas:

I know that Marcia has a new grandbaby, which means she will be picking out a gift for her daughter-in-law as a ‘new mommy’.  I think the cutest gift out there for new moms is the Tiny Hands Solid Serum ($5.95) by Lush.

The tiny hands remind me of little baby hands, and they smell fabulous, like vanilla and spring flowers.  It’s actually a solid lotion that melts into your hands as you hold it, softening rough skin and making them soft enough for baby holding.  The Tiny Hands has argan oil in it, so you know it’s great for your skin.  Be sure to get a Body Butter Tin ($3.95) to put the Tiny Hands in between uses.

Is your mom more of a modern woman?  I absolutely suggest the new Halston fragrance, Woman Amber ($90).

This is a very sophisticated yet warm scent that just smells luxurious.  The notes are amber, wood and resins, and wild tuberose.  It sounds heavy, but it’s actually very soft and beautiful.  And the bottle is divine, it’s the classic Halston bottle but coated in gold.  You can get this fragrance from Elizabeth Arden.

And speaking of classic, does that word describe your mom?  How about an absolute classic fragrance, Giorgio Beverly Hills?

Ah, remember that yellow package, and that beautiful bottle?  It smells just as good today as it did thirty years ago.

One sniff of that Egyptian Jasmine and Gardenia and I am transported back to the ’80’s, and in a good way.  Like the Halston fragrance, you can get this from Elizabeth Arden.

Is your mom super practical, but also hip?  Then you have to check out Hollywood Fashion Tape.  I often go to this website just to click around and study all ingenious products they have.  They are celebrating their ten-year anniversary, and have free shipping through the end of May.  Why not put together a little survival kit for your mom or your MIL?

Get a chic clutch, like this Bowtique ($25) one from Sephora:

And inside you could put Temporary Hem Tape ($7.99), Boot Straps (wow, don’t we all need these??) ($11.99), Fashion Tape ($8.99),

Deodorant Removing Sponge ($4.99) and the brand new Accessory Dots ($4.99) to help keep scarves and such in place.

A beautiful bag and these great little items will have your mom ready for anything.

If your mom is a bathing beauty, you have to check out the Cali Cosmetics line.  The Tarocco product line is fantastic, and everything smells delicious, like Sicilian Red Oranges.  My picks for Mother’s Day would be the Tarocco Cleanser Body Wash and the Tarocco Nourishing Moisturizer.

The body wash foams up perfectly and doesn’t strip the skin, and it smells amazing.  Add to that the beautiful moisturizer and your mom will feel totally pampered and special.

What if your mom is a skin care addict, but wants something new and different?  Check out the L’Athene line.  My top picks are the Essential Facial Cleanser ($45), which cleans, tones, and removes eye makeup without harsh detergents;

and the Hand and Body Silkening Nutrient Creme ($48). It has a slight perfume fragrance, so be aware of that, but this stuff really tackles super dry skin with gusto.

And if your mom is young at heart, check out this Hello Kitty To Go Solid Perfume Necklace ($39)

Ok, I’ll admit…I want this!!  It is just adorable, isn’t it?  And the apple/orange/vanilla scent is beautiful.  Husband and kids, are you reading??? – Lisa
