Makeup Wars – favorite drugstore foundations and concealers

Woman applying concealerWelcome back to Makeup Wars and our budget friendly theme of the week – drugstore favorites for foundation and concealer. My picks are rather limited but they are products I use all the time so they are trusted and true for me. I’ll be interested in what my fellow bloggers pick since I’m always in the market for something new.

My two favorite foundations for this theme are by Rimmel and SheaMoisture while my favorite concealers are from Maybelline. The prices are reasonable but more important I love the way they wear.

RIMMEL LASTING FINISH 25 HR SKIN PERFECTING FOUNDATION

I bought Rimmel Lasting Finish on the recommendation of a friend from a Facebook beauty board. She just kept saying how perfect her skin looked with it and it was hard to resist. The hardest part of buying drugstore foundation is color matching. Since I’m very pale I start with the lightest shade. My choice was Pale Ivory 091 which is good match though a tad darker than I prefer.

I sometimes mix in a drop of Manic Panic Dreamtone Flawless Foundation Color Corrector in white with this and other foundations. This $9.24 product has saved me so many times and makes foundations too dark usable again.manic panicDepending on what you read Rimmel Lasting Finish is either a medium or full coverage. I’d say it’s in between. It’s very lightweight to apply and doesn’t feel heavy or look cakey. There is a fragrance to it that takes about 10 minutes before I stop noticing it but that doesn’t stop me.

SHEAMOISTURE WEIGHTLESS SHEA SERUM FOUNDATION

Shea Moisture Weightless Shea Serum Foundaton

Lisa and I reviewed 3 shades of the SheaMoisture Serum Foundation in one of our side by side reviews. Above are Nude and Latte from Lisa and below is Porcelain that I use.

Shea Moisture Tea Rose Luscious Lipstick and Weightless Shea Serum Foundation in Porcelain

By coincidence I’m wearing this foundation as I type. I find this to be such an easy to wear foundation. It lays lightly on my skin yet the coverage is excellent. No matter what tool I chose to blend with, it always works well. In my original review of this I compared this $14.99 foundation to my $65 bottle of Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF40 and the only difference is the $40 saved and the fact that there’s no SPF in SheaMoisture.

SHEA MOISTURE Weightless Shea Serum Foundation in Porcelain

While the SheaMoisture was a press sample it’s one I’d buy again without any qualms. It’s formulated with natural ingredients and never tested on amimals. It contains shea butter and Vitamins C & E to nourish, protect and moisturize. Available in 20 shades with most designated for darker skintones.

MAYBELLINE INSTANT AGE REWIND TREATMENT CONCEALERS

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer

In actuality, the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealers are the only ones currently in my makeup wardrobe. Any others are long gone. But these have made the cut and make me want to try Maybelline’s latest concealers. Sadly no personal pictures since I lost them and haven’t found a way to upload photos but… I can still vouch for these. I bought 3 different shades: #110 is the shade I use for concealer, #150 is their neutralizer shade , and #160 is their brightener shade. I’ve only used 110 and 160 so far and they do what they say. #110 is good for those of us with pale skin. It’s not a wimpy concealer, the coverage is quite nice. #160 is slightly peachy and I use this to brighten undereye circles. The formula is quite creamy and a little goes a long way.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer

As tempting as it is for me to use the cushy sponge top, it’s too heavy an application so I dot it on and then blend with my finger. Age Rewind contains goji berry and haloxen to help diminish puffiness and dark circles under your eyes. #150 is for very stubborn dark circles and should be applied prior to any other concealer.

There you have my drugstore buys. What do you use and recommend? I’m always curious and up for new challenges.  —  Marcia

RIMMEL Magnif'Eyes and NYC Get It All

RIMMEL Magnif’Eyes and NYC Get It All

The lazy, hazy days of summer sometimes need a pick-me-up and if you are reading this blog that usually means something cosmetic. When that feeling pops up there’s nothing like a drugstore trip to add a new product to your life. Having received 2 of the Rimmel London Magnif’eyes Double Ended Shadow + Liner and 3 NYC NEW YORK COLOR GET IT ALL ALL IN ONE LIP COLORS was a definite boost in these lazy days.

There’s so much to love with the Rimmel London Magnif’eyes Double Ended Shadow + Liner that 2 aren’t quite enough. These amazing shadow crayons and liners are the smoothest I’ve tried in ages and the price is so right at MSRP $6.47. How do you pick from these shades? #001 Back To Black, Liner: Matte Black, Shadow: Gun Metal Grey (high pearl with glitter), #002 Kissed By A Rose Gold, Liner: Brown (low pearl), Shadow: Rose Gold (medium pearl), #003 Queens Of The Bronzed Age, Liner: Gold (high pearl with glitter), Shadow: Bronze (medium pearl), #004 Dark Side Of Blue, Liner: Matte Cobalt Blue, Shadow: Dark Grey (low pearl), #005 Pink & Purple Rain, Liner: Matte Dark Plum,  Shadow: Light Pink (high pearl with glitter)rimmel collage

I’ve got Pink & Purple Rain along with Kissed by a Rose Gold. These 2-in-1 pencils are easy to apply and last me the entire day. I don’t even have to use an eyeshadow primer with the crayon end since they last through even these incredibly hot and humid days.

Rimmel Magnif'Eyes liner end

The liners are kohl kajal so they are intense and long wearing. Not only can they be worn as eyeliner on the top or bottom but they can be used on the waterline. The shadow side is incredible with a long lasting, creaseproof, and waterproof formula. These are total love with Kissed by a Rose Gold especially getting a lot of wear.

NYC NEW YORK COLOR GET IT ALL ALL IN ONE LIP COLOR ($2.99) are new to NYC New York Color Cosmetic’s line. These are very creamy with a good wear time. The finish is shiny and the colors can be intense.

Colors available are ImpREDssive, WondeREDfu, IncREDible,  FUCHSIAtastic,  FabFUCHSIA,

They have a candy like fragrance that reminds me of Cherry Lik-M-Aid (am I aging myself?) which was always my favorite. likmaidI have the NYC Get It All lipsticks in ExeptioNUDE, PINKdigious, and ImpREDssive. ExeptioNUDE is a mauve nude, PINKdigious is a bright pretty pink, and ImpREDssive is a hot red shade that will get you noticed. Using a light coat of these will give you more of a sheer look but they are easy to intensify with more than one coat plus they’ll last longer that way.

My favorite foundations for winter – Top 10 Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday has rolled around again and I’m excited to be sharing my favorites for foundation. I have more than on my list but just as important as my favorites are my two tools of choice so that took two spots. I purposely left out CC Creams even though I will use them in the winter but I wanted to stick with foundations for a change.

These are in no particular order. These are all sitting on my vanity right now! I may not be neat but I’m happy!!
1.
BOBBI BROWN INTENSIVE SKIN SERUM FOUNDATION is pretty new to me and pretty impressive too. It has SPF 40 in it and is available in 18 shades plus it’s very forgiving. I’ve been wanting a serum foundation and the one I bought from Armani a few years ago never felt right. The makeup artist I went to loves this foundation and gave me a sample. That brought me back to buy it. It’s very lightweight and you wouldn’t expect it to hide imperfections but it does. It feels great on my skin too.
2.
TOO FACED BORN THIS WAY ABSOLUTE PERFECTION FOUNDATION just moved into my house last week. I keep reading about it and Sephora F&F finally put me over the edge. I’ve worn it twice which really isn’t enough to put it on a list but both times I was quite happy with the way it looked and lasted. This $38 foundation comes in 18 shades and is oil-free. I love that it has ingredients to help with hydration (coconut water and hyaluronic acid are two).
3.
IT COSMETICS O2 O2 ULTRA REPAIR LIQUID OXYGEN FOUNDATION ($38) was my foundation favorite of the year for 2014 and remains a favorite 11 months later. I’m a huge fan of IT Cosmetics but with all brands some products are better than others. This is a ‘better than others’ foundation. Fair matches me perfectly but it only is available in 5 shades which might be a problem for some. One of the biggest reasons to love IT is their anti-aging ingredients (Peptides, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Niacin, Hyaluronic Acid and Grape Seed Oil plus Vitamins A, C, & E). This is actually a serum foundation which I didn’t realize until I was typing this up!!
4.
SENNA LASTING ILLUSION FOUNDATION* has been one that I’ve counted on for an airbrushed finish for almost two years. This is a fuller coverage than most of the others I own and there are many days and occasions that I crave that coverage. It’s a matte satin that reflects light away from imperfections. Senna isn’t talked about enough but in my opinion people are missing out on this great Hollywood indie brand. ($48, 7 shades)
5.
MALLY BEAUTY EFFORTLESS AIRBRUSH PERFECT SKIN MOUSSE is another foundation that people need to know about. One of the problems with Mally Beauty is that it’s hard to find – all the great places that carry the line only carry parts of Mally. This is only sold at Mally’s website and it’s worth it to shop there. The coverage with this mousse is perfection. I need so little but I could build it up if necessary. Plus it comes with a fabulous foundation brush that feels wonderful and works like a dream ($45*).
6.
GIORGIO ARMANI LUMINOUS SILK FOUNDATION – there are no words for this foundation. I’ve gone through 3 bottles since I started using it and I’m sure to go through more. It’s available in 23 shades and it’s worth every penny of the $62 cost to me. It’s weightless and oil-free and the coverage is like silk.
7.
RIMMEL LONDON LASTING FINISH FOUNDATION is the opposite in cost from Armani and not similar to it in finish, but it’s the best drugstore foundation I’ve ever bought. The problem with drugstores is being unable to test colors but I got lucky with O91 Light Ivory. At first I noticed a perfumey fragrance but once applied I noticed it for about 15 seconds and never again. If you are looking for great coverage to last through the day and you have $6.99 laying around, this is what to spend it on.
8.
GERI G INNOCENT FOUNDATION isn’t known at all. I just reviewed it again along with their Transceutical Canvas so I hope that this comes more to the forefront. It’s a medium coverage that can be built up. On the days I’m looking a little worse for the wear, I turn to this to make my skin look its best. The downside is that it only comes in 4 shades and the swatches on the website aren’t really helpful. ($38)
9.
BEAUTY BLENDER SPONGE is amazing. Don’t accept imitations. I don’t care that it’s $20 while others are much less, this is the one that works. It now comes in many colors like the new royal purple. The black one is called the Pro one but I don’t think it’s any different than my pink ones. Trust me when I tell you that this could change your makeup application.
10.
ARTIS OVAL 10 ELITE BRUSH* has become holy grail to me. It changes your paradigm about what a foundation brush is and you won’t want to look back. The softness, the bristles (2500 of them!), the ergonomics, and the luxuriousness of this $72 brush make it worth the high cost. If was told I could just take a few items out of my house this would be high up on the list. It’s that precious. Review here.

Makeup Wars – items that surprised me

This edition of Makeup Wars is all about items that surprised us. These could be winners, these could be losers, but they were all in the race since we’ve used them for our blogs and personal life. I’ve found quite a few products that I didn’t necessarily have high expectations of that have blown me away but unfortunately the opposite has been true too. I’m focusing on the positive because these have all broken through the finish line as winners.

Makeup Wars items that surprised me - Christie Brinkley skincare, Benefit Roller Lash mascara and Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation

Makeup Wars items that surprised me – Christie Brinkley skincare, Benefit Roller Lash mascara and Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation

CHRISTIE BRINKLEY AUTHENTIC SKINCARE is a skincare line that I turned down the first time it was offered to me. My perception was that as beautiful as Christie Brinkley is, that she’d probably slapped her name down on a line that offered to make her some money. I was totally wrong and now I’ve had the opportunity to try 4 of her products. These are all well thought out items that have performed beautifully for me. I want an anti-aging line considering I’m aging every day and not going backwards. I’ve found her products to be excellent especially the Recapture Day + IR Defense Anti-Aging Day Cream with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen (that’s a mouthful) and Recapture 360 Night Anti-aging Night Treatment. These are luxurious without being outrageously priced. They are rich and provide the anti-aging benefits I look for.

RIMMEL LONDON LASTING FINISH 25 HR FOUNDATION was a recommendation by a friend who loves IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream as much as I do. I bought it because of her raves but I was sure it wouldn’t work for me and I’d return it. SURPRISE! I really like the foundation. I haven’t trusted drugstore foundation for a dozen years. I never found a color match, I rarely found one that I could tolerate the scent of and I didn’t find one that looked natural on my skin. Rimmel’s Lasting Finish has done all 3 of these for me in the right way. My color match is 091 Light Ivory, the fragrance disappears on my skin and I love the finish it gives me. It lasts all day with maybe a little more concealer if I’m going out. This is a great $7 surprise.

My last surprise is BENEFIT ROLLER LASH MASCARA. I haven’t liked many Benefit products unfortunately. I have a few that I’ve enjoyed like Fake Up Concealer and some I’ve hated like They’re Real, Push Up Liner so I was surprised that I even bought Roller Lash Mascara. I’m even more surprised how much I like this mascara. As with all mascaras the reviews were mixed but definitely more in favor of the mascara than not. I first bought Maybelline Lash Sensational because I had heard they gave a similar look and as much as I’m a fan of Lash Sensational, it’s a bear to remove. One day Roller Lash slipped into my shopping cart and arrived at my house. I put off wearing it thinking it was just another mascara. It’s not! It’s a SURPRISE! I really love the look of the mascara and how it wears. What do I get from this?

-Longer, defined lashes that have a great amount of volume

-Curl that lasts from morning through night

-Compliments galore on how great my lashes look (even when cringing in the chair at the oral surgeon)

-A mascara without flaking, clumping, or smudging

-A mascara that easily removes

Rimmel Lasting Finish 25 Hr foundation – does it do what it says?

Not long ago a reader accused us of only writing positive reviews. I’m not sure what the problem is with that but we prefer to be upbeat and tell you what we like about a product while also pointing out what didn’t work for us. There is nothing in the world of cosmetics that’s going to make 100% of us happy. That’s why we read more than one review to decide if something would work for our skin or not.

Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25 HR foundation

Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25 HR foundation

An item that was recommended to me was Rimmel Lasting Finish 25 HR Foundation with Comfort Serum. I’ve been on a cosmetic board with this woman for years so I knew what her taste was like. She compared this to my beloved IT Cosmetics CC+ so I just had to test it and see if anything could match up to that. The first thing to note is that this is a new foundation with an old name. It’s been reformulated according to Rimmel London.

The next time I was at CVS I picked it up (love their beauty coupons and beauty club!!) in the lightest shade they carried, 091 Light Ivory. On the Rimmel London website they show this is available in 11 shades from 010 Light Porcelain to 400 Natural Beige but at CVS I only noticed about 7 shades. This is not a foundation that is meant for women of color obviously.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation in 091 Light Ivory

Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation in 091 Light Ivory

Does this compare to IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream? Yes and no. It’s a much fuller coverage even though Rimmel calls it a medium coverage. It covers very well and hides most of the redness on my face. The only concealing I have to do is under my eyes. It has an SPF of 20 while IT has an SPF of 50.

Does it last all day? I have no intention of testing this for 25 hours to find that out but I have worn it on days that last 14-15 hours and haven’t had to touch it up at all.

swatch of Rimmel Lasting Finish in 091 Light Ivory

blended swatch of Rimmel Lasting Finish in 091 Light Ivory

blended swatch of Rimmel Lasting Finish in 091 Light Ivory

As you can see on my hand it’s a great match. I was wavering between 091 Light Ivory and 100 Ivory in the store. It’s a pain not being able to swatch there! I went with Light Ivory since it was less yellow. When I held the bottles up to compare I felt that Light Ivory might be too pink but luckily it’s not.

When I got home and decided to do some photography that’s when I went to make sure I had my receipt. I was absolutely certain that I’d be returning this because of the fragrance I noticed as soon as I opened the jar. The smell lingered on my hand so I was concerned. But I wore it anyway figuring I could wash it off – but I barely noticed the fragrance once on my skin. I was (and am) thrilled about that. I’ve worn it a dozen times since I bought it and it’s never been a problem. Most days I switch between this Rimmel foundation and the IT CC+ Cream.

Rimmel says that this is sweat, heat, humidity and transfer proof for up to 25 hours. I think they make a good point here. I haven’t had any problems no matter the temperature. I feel that I’m going to enjoy this more though when autumn actually arrives and it’s not as hot and humid. For $6.99 or less this is a great beauty buy for me. While I’m sorry to disappoint that one reader, I’m happy that this is another positive review. As Sally Field would say “I like it, I really like it.” — Marcia

Top Ten Mascaras for 2015

Beautysets - Top Ten Mascaras
What a tricky topic this is. Beside the choice of color for a lipstick, I think mascara is the hardest product to agree on. Our eyes are so different as is what we are looking for in a mascara. What’s one person’s “OMG” is another person’s “You like that???”. Here are 10 of my latest OMG mascaras. Some are new to me and some you’ve seen over and over again but a little reminder can’t hurt.
I did my list in order of the price of the mascara not in order of the love of it.
1.  MILANI TOTAL LASH COVER ($4.99) is one I pick up every time I notice a BOGO sale. I love how this mascara makes my eyelashes look and I love the price. It’s always sold out and there’s a reason for that.
2.  MAYBELLINE LASH SENSATION ($8.99) is one I can’t resist even though it’s a bear to remove. But the look is so lush that I can’t help but love it. Just have a good eye makeup remover handy.

Maybelline Lash Sensation

3.  RIMMEL WONDERLASH ($8.99*) is a new one for me. I’m still on my first tube of it but I’ll buy it again. It’s a great everyday mascara that makes my lashes look full and comes off with ease.

Rimmel London Wonderlash

4.  EDDIE FUNKHOUSER QUATRO VARIABLE LASH ($12.99) is one you’ve seen a “few” times. I’ve bought so many of these and still have one left. When some of my stash is used up, Eddie will be back in my cart without a doubt. This is a mascara for everyone since there are 4 variable settings you can use depending on how much volume you are interested in. Just turn the knob and you get fuller and fuller lashes. I keep mine on the 3rd one.

5. BAREMINERALS LASH DOMINATION ($18) was sent for review originally. I love the way this applies and already bought a new one. This is another that looks great all day and removes easily at night.

BareMinerals Lash Domination

6.  TOO FACED BETTER THAN SEX MASCARA ($23) gives me the false eyelash look I want. It could easily be my number one favorite. Lash lashes that aren’t crunchy, length, volume. It’s got it all.

7.  IT COSMETICS HELLO LASHES ($23), my list wouldn’t be complete without Hello Lashes. My original one came in a set that was sent and since then I’ve bought it half a dozen times.

8.  DOUCCE PUNK VOLUMIZER ($24*) was in one of my recent Wantable boxes and it caught me by surprise. It’s so not me but I can’t help but like it. I don’t know if I’d buy it again but the novelty of having a very volumizing mascara is fun for me. It’s truly a night mascara since I don’t usually have “out there” lashes.

9.  CHARLOTTE TILBURY ‘FULL FAT LASHES’ 5 STAR MASCARA ($29) is my luxury choice. It’s one of the products that I was most excited to get from Charlotte Tilbury and I’m not disappointed with how great my lashes look when wearing it.

10.  MDMflow GREATER THAN MASCARA (approximately $33) was in my Boxycharm box from July. I wasn’t so sure about this new UK mascara but I stuck with it and I really like it. I’m glad it was in my subscription though I’m not sure if I’d repurchase. But I do like it and it needed to be in my list.

Keep Calm and Lip Balm from Rimmel London

Rimmel London Keep Calm and Lip Balm

Don’t these look fun?? I adore the packaging of the new Keep Calm and Lip Balm from Rimmel London. So colorful and pretty, but do they make it into my beach bag?

If I were only judging this book by its cover, I would say absolutely. The three tinted lip balms that Rimmel London sent me to test are cute cute cute, and just by looking at the balms you can see they are going to be extremely moisturizing.

Rimmel London Keep Calm and Lip Balm

Rimmel London Keep Calm and Lip Balm

The ‘Keep Calm’ logo and bright colors equal brilliant packaging. Keep Calm and Lip Balm ($2.50) comes in six shades – Clear (Keep Calm and Shop), Pink Blush (Keep Calm and Kiss), Berry Blush (Keep Calm and Rock), Rose Blush (Keep Calm and Play), and Violet Blush (Keep Calm and Party).

They are long wearing for a balm and have moisturizing oils that lock in moisture, increasing it by 22%.

Keep Calm and Lip Balm swatches, top to bottom: Rose Blush, Violet Blush, Pink Blush

As you can see, the tint is barely there. In fact, on my lips the only one that has much color is the Violet Blush and it is definitely subtle.

The lip balms are soft…see what I did to poor Violet Blush? Applied, they have great mouth feel and give wonderful slip. They make lips tingle a bit too, in a minty sort of way that is pleasant. What’s not so great is the taste. It tastes like perfume and it doesn’t go away quickly. Believe me, if you kiss someone while wearing one of these lip balms, he or she will probably not be happy.

Unfortunately, these balms don’t make it into my beach bag. The soft tint is nice, the packaging is fabulous, and I love the moisturizing formula…but the taste is a deal breaker for me. Have you tried to Keep Calm and Lip Balm? Do you agree with me or do these cuties work for you?  – Lisa
