My hair obsession continues with Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to save time, I can “see” it on your face that you’re right there with me. That’s why we need tools that are made just for that purpose. The nice folks at Revlon wanted to help me along when they sent their One Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer.

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer

Revlon makes two different One Step hair dryers and I’ve tried them both. For my shoulder length semi-straight hair this one is the winner. Not only do I get my hair dry with just this brush but I style it at the same time.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

I’ve been having a hair dilemma of late. I want straight hair but I don’t want to straighten it with chemicals. I’ve done that in the past and probably will again but now isn’t the time. With this Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer I am getting straight hair but it’s not super straight. I’m getting just enough volume and lots of swing.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer

Because I’m able to work quickly I’m noticing less damage too. The bristles are nylon pin and tufted bristles. Since they have this wavy pattern there’s volume added without pulling. The barrel has a 2″ diameter so it’s best for longer hair. I think it would be amazing on very long hair since you’d get it flat at first and then be able to add gorgeous waves.

With Ionic Technology and a ceramic coating you get the protection your hair needs from the heat. There are 3 heat settings and I’ve been using it on the second one. I don’t notice it ever gets cool but setting 1 is great for refreshing my hair on days I don’t wash.

What can beat a tool that can be used wet or dry, that saves time, that helps with shine and volume? That’s why you need to consider the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer.  —  Marcia

Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Styler – not what your mother taught you

I’m going to show my age today when telling you about Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Styler. You see when I was growing up I battled my mother with how I wore my hair. I liked my hair to lie straight and I wanted to wear a headband in it all the time. Instead my mother insisted on using these on me:spoolies box

Spoolies

Spoolies

OMG, the horror of it all. You never knew which way the fussy curl was going to land; they were uncomfortable to sleep in and I usually still woke up with wet hair; and I cried a lot!

No more crying these days since we’ve come a long way in what we can use on ourselves and our daughters. I’m sure there are still tears because that’s just how girls are but hopefully less with the advancements made with hair drying and styling.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler

One such advancement is Revlon’s One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler. This would have been the ideal hair tool when I was growing up. It does it all in one step. When using this I towel dry my hair and then put in my leave-in conditioner. I comb through so my hair is straight and let my hair dry a little longer while I do some of my bathroom basics.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler

That’s when my Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler starts creating its magic. This eliminates my hair dryer, my brush, and my flat iron. It does it all with just this one machine.

There are two heat setting plus a cool setting making it better for use all thicknesses of hair. The cord swivels so you don’t need a degree in gymnastics to use this. I wish the cord were a little longer but if your plug isn’t far then the 5.5″ length will be fine.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler brush

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler brush

The brush is a large 3″x5″ paddle brush that’s cushioned so it’s comfortable on your head and doesn’t pull. Even though Revlon calls this lightweight I don’t really agree with that. It’s less than 1 lb though so I might be in the minority.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler

This works best on the length of my hair. I use clips and separate my hair so I’m drying and straightening it in sections. The top of my hair is a little more stubborn when using this but if I save it for last it’s dry enough to make the job easier.

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler from the box

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler from the box

My recommendation for the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler is that it’s best for hair that’s at least shoulder length and not too curly. It helps eliminate frizz and will keep your hair pretty darn straight. The drying power is 1000 Watts so it’s gentler on hair than most hairdryers plus being faster there’s less chance for damage.

If you have hair horrors like I did, look into this 21st century hair tool. And don’t use Spoolies on your daughter!!  — Marcia

The Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler is $49.99 and available at Ulta, Target, Amazon, and more retail outlets.

Makeup Wars drugstore lipstick finds with Burt’s Bees, CoverGirl, Milani

makeup wars drugstore lipsticks

We’ve been doing Makeup Wars posts for several years now. It’s not always easy for the group to come up with new themes that haven’t been done but I believe we’ve done it this time. I don’t remember writing specifically about lipsticks that you can find at drugstores before so we have something new for you. To be honest I rarely buy lipstick at the drugstore and it’s mainly because they don’t have testers. I like seeing the lipsticks I buy and that’s because it’s not always possible at the drugstore. On to the majority of what I do have ….

BURT’S BEES LIPSTICKS * are the ones I was most excited to try after seeing them on other blogs. They don’t disappoint.  makeup wars burts bees packageThe packaging of these belies the $9 price. With 14 shades to choose from you won’t have trouble picking favorites. Burt’s Bees lipsticks are creamy and hydrating. Just like the lip balms they are so famous for, these are loaded with great ingredients. They are made with 100% naturally moisturizing ingredients like moringa and raspberry seed oils to keep the moisture in. While they give you color they are also hydrating and conditioning your lips. I don’t think you can go wrong with these.

Burt's Bees Lipsticks Nile Nude, Tulip Tide, Blush Basin

Burt’s Bees Lipsticks Nile Nude, Tulip Tide, Blush Basin

Burt's Bees Lipsticks Blush Basin, Tulip Tide, Nile Nude

Burt’s Bees Lipsticks Blush Basin, Tulip Tide, Nile Nude

When I first open them I notice a fragrance but that’s the last time I notice it.  It dissipates instantly.I have 3 shades (Blush Basin, Nile Nude, and Tulip Tide) and am eyeing Iced Iris now that I know how great these are. Blush Basin is a warm mauve, Tulip Tide is a beautiful pink, and Nile Nude is a warm nude and doesn’t have the orange that my picture depicts. These are available at Ulta and Ulta.com and drugstore.com.

Covergirl Coloricious oh sugar!

Covergirl Coloricious oh sugar!

COVERGIRL COLORICIOUS OH SUGAR BALM! * is the newest lip product from Covergirl. These are vitamin enriched tinted lip balms in pretty pastel packaging. The outer packaging doesn’t necessarily give you a hint as to what’s inside. Be sure you check the bottom of the tube for a truer shade.

Covergirl Coloricious oh sugar!

Covergirl Coloricious oh sugar!

I’m loving these since they give just a hint of color yet are loaded with balmy richness. There is no fragrance but when I lick my lips I notice a slight sweetness to them. If you are looking for deep pigment these may not be for you, but they are perfect for me since I like a sheer lip that is moisturizing.

Covergirl oh sugar! in Candy Bonbon and Taffy Tire

Covergirl oh sugar! in Candy Bonbon and Taffy Tire

I have Candy Bonbon (aka Candy) which is a light rosy pink on my lips and Taffy Tire, a ‘your lips but better’ shade on me. These are normally $8.99 but are on sale at drugstore.com at the moment.

Milani Dulce Caramelo

Milani Dulce Caramelo

MILANI COLOR STATEMENT LIPSTICK has become a bloggers delight. If you are a matte lipstick lover then these are for you. How many lipsticks have 45 shades to choose from, in a variety of finishes, and only cost approximately $5.50? After all the hype I had to try one and chose Dulce Caramelo which is a warm nude that’s not too dark (in spite of my swatch).

Milani Dulce Caramelo

Milani Dulce Caramelo

Milani’s Color Statement Lipsticks are highly pigmented and contain Vitamins A, C, & E to moisturize and nourish lips. Dolce Caramelo is a cream finish that’s slightly shiny. My only problem with it is that it’s fragranced so I’m not sure I want to continue buying these, although a fabulous pink just might change my mind.

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolas

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolus

REVLON ULTRA HD LIPSTICK in Gladiolus a real departure for me. It’s red and I really don’t wear red lipstick. But when a friend offered it to me, I took it to test it out. Have I worn it out of the house? Of course not but someday I might get brave enough.

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolas

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Gladiolus

The color is absolutely stunning. It’s the shade of red nail polish I love so much with its pinky undertone. I’m experimenting with it though to see if I’ll find a way to make it work for me. This comes in 20 shades and it’s opaque in one coat. It’s not sticky but it does have a fragrance. Right now Revlon is BOGO 1/2 at Ulta.

Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Natural Rose

Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Natural Rose

As usual I neglected to put in some of my favorites from PIXI like their lip crayons, Lip Lift Ice (clear plumping gloss), and Shea Butter Lip Balms so forgive me!!

Five essential tips for transitioning into fall – with a little help from Meijer

Everything you need to transition into fall from Meijer!

Everything you need to transition into fall from Meijer!

I guess it is officially fall…I saw my first Christmas display at the store today!! I also saw my first red and orange leaves on the trees in my yard. I’m breaking out my heavy jeans, sweaters, and jackets – so much fun to rediscover a whole new season’s wardrobe. Meijer sent me a fabulous box of goodies with everything needed to also change my skin care and cosmetics wardrobe and it reminded me of the five essential tips for transitioning into fall.

Rethink your skin care

Rethink your skin care

1.  Rethink your skin care.  With the weather turning cooler, the air inside gets drier which changes your skin care needs.

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water

A terrific option for makeup removal and toner is Simple Cleansing Micellar Water ($6.29). It’s all the rage right now and for good reason. This is gentle and easy to use, and most importantly it doesn’t dry out skin. In fact, the micellar water boosts skin hydration 90%. The price is right too, making it a no-brainer for fall.

Switch your hair products

Switch your hair products

2.  Switch your hair products to compensate for dry indoor air.  Just like skin, hair changes with the seasons, and fall brings dry, frizzy, static-filled hair. Go for moisturizing hair products, like Pantene Expert Collection Dry Defy Shampoo and Conditioner ($8.39). This ultra-moisturizing duo tackles even the most parched hair, taking care of frizz, split ends, and static.

Try going natural for toothpaste and deodorant

Try going natural for toothpaste and deodorant

3.  Try going natural for toothpaste and deodorant. My daughters have completely switched to Tom’s of Maine products and swear by the AntiPlaque and Whitening Toothpaste ($4.49) and Natural Deodorant ($4.49). The toothpaste is flouride-free and fights both cavities and plaque, and the deodorant is aluminum-free with 24 hour odor protection that really works. Not only do these natural products truly perform, Tom’s of Maine walks the talk as a planet friendly line that is truly natural, sustainable, and responsible.

Update and invest in new fall colors

Update and invest in new fall colors

4.  Update old products and invest in some fun fall colors.  It’s a great time to invest in some new makeup brushes, and definitely time to throw out your old mascara, lip gloss, and foundation and get some fresh new shades.

Fun fall shades and products to update

Fun fall shades and products to update

I am so happy to see that the Real Techniques Travel Essentials Makeup Brush Collection ($12.59) is available at Meijer. Marcia first introduced me to these brushes several years ago and they are absolutely fantastic. This set comes with a cool travel case and it includes my favorite brush of all time – the Domed Shadow Brush.

Mascara needs to be replaced every 2 months or so, and there are great sales at Meijer for the fall season so take advantage! Two picks for long and lush lashes include Covergirl The Super Sizer ($6.99) and Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Chaotic Lash ($6.99). Why not go big this fall?  The Super Sizer makes lashes as long as they can get.  Don’t give up on the Colossal Chaotic Lash…once I figured out how to use the brush both vertically and horizontally my lashes went from ok to incredible.

Lippies need to be updated too…throw out those gross old lip glosses and sticky lipsticks and try something a little different. I can’t stop raving about the Covergirl Outlast Lipstick in Into the Fuchsia  This is a bright, bold shade with a hint of shimmer and the opaque coverage really lasts. It’s a cross between a lipstick and a gel-based balm and it feels divine on the lips.

And how perfect is that Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour Eyeshadow Palette in Surreal ($6.59)? Interestingly, this was part of the Summer 2015 Collection, but I think the gold and green shades are truly perfect for fall.

New season, new scents!

New season, new scents!

5.  Switch to new scents for the new season.  It’s time to say goodbye to soft summer scents and go a bit bolder. For women, I love Versace Bright Crystal ($73). The top notes are pomegranate, Yuzu and frosted accord. Mid-notes include peony and magnolia, and base notes include amber extracted from plants, musk and red woods. I think of this as a ‘frozen flower’ scent…great for transitioning into colder months!

For the man in your life, I am totally gaga for Hugo Man by Hugo Boss ($19.99). The top note is green apple, with aromatic notes and a base of fir balsam. Makes me picture a buff guy in flannel, riding a horse, stopping to pick me an apple as we ride through an orchard…ah, you get the idea. It’s fabulous and you want your guy to smell like this.

If you need an excuse to go shopping, you’ve got two here – you need new things for the new season and Meijer has great sales going on right now. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get ready for fall!  – Lisa

Total Beauty Collection’s new program starring Revlon

Total Beauty Collection

Total Beauty Collection

Total Beauty Collection has had subscription boxes for sale since May of 2012 when they became so popular in the world of beauty. As with most boxes the items in the boxes were sample sizes. To celebrate a different kind of sampling program they’ve sent several blogs their newest box to share with you. Beauty Info Zone received this new collection and we’re excited to give you the news about it. This goes on sale on April 8, 2013 and is $15 which includes shipping. You don’t have to subscribe either so I shouldn’t have called it a subscription box. Instead I’ll say it’s a collection of beauty products that’s new and unique.

Opening the Total Beauty Collection

Opening the Total Beauty Collection

This first box is called the Total Beauty Collection Revlon Edition. Every one of these great products is full size and represents the newest products that Revlon has brought out. It was curated by Revlon’s Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman for spring. There are 4 products plus a booklet with looks from the new Pacific Coast collection by Gucci Westman for Revlon Spring 2013. All the colors are perfect for spring and colors that were prevalent on the runways recently.

There are four full size products in the box including 2 Revlon Lip Butters. I’ve previously reviewed other Lip Butters with raves because they are my favorite lipstick that Revlon has ever put out. The colors are Pink Lemonade and Sorbet. There’s also a beautiful Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow palette, Sea Mist, with 4 colors that are gorgeous for spring. In addition there’s a Revlon Colorstay nail polish in a nude shade called Trade Winds. The booklet illustrates four looks using these and a few other Revlon products.

The two Lip Butters, Pink Lemonade and Sorbet, are beautiful and 2 of the 4 newest shades released by Revlon. Pink Lemonade is sweet and light and refreshing, like a glass of fresh pink lemonade would be. It’s very light and may not show up on everyone but it can also be used to top another lipstick to lighten it up without making it look frosty. Sorbet is a fabulous bright pink that has been shown on the gorgeous Emma Stone in advertisements. It’s a very cool tone that can be tempered with Pink Lemonade if it were to be too cool or too bright for you. I personally love wearing them together. Revlon Lip Butters are sheer and moisturizing on my lips.

Sea Mist Colorstay eyeshadow palette has 4 great shades that remind me of the ocean. The shades are Emerald, Teal, Peach, and Aubergine. All 4 of these shades have a satin finish which is my favorite. Emerald is my favorite shade in this quad since I’m loving all greens lately. The way I like to wear it is Emerald on the lid, Teal in the outer crease about halfway across and Peach on the browbone. Peach is very light and didn’t show up well in my swatches but it’s a beautiful shade on my eyes and has a great subtlety to hold the look together. Aubergine looks darker than it actually is on the eye. I liked it as an eyeliner with the other shades in this palette (I use Trish McEvoy’s Finish Line to give it more depth and staying power).

Trade Winds Colorstay Nail Polish is a nude polish which gives the mannequin look to nails. It’s a warmer shade of nude than I feel comfortable wearing which is why I just have it on a nail wheel. The brushes on Revlon nail polishes are fuller than most and apply polish very well. I’ve always had great experience with Revlon nail polish since they last well.

This is a fun new way for Total Beauty to do a subscription box. By sticking with one brand and including only full size products you are getting the newest from the brand with items you can actually use. Hurray to Revlon and Gucci Westman for putting together such beautiful colors and looks in the first collaboration, Total Beauty Collection Revlon Edition. February PopSugar Must Have – is it love?

February PopSugar Must Have

February PopSugar Must Have

My February PopSugar Must Have box arrived on Valentine’s Day so the timing was good. Their mission is to spoil you the month of Valentine’s Day. Let’s see if they spoiled me.

contents of the box

contents of the box

Each month the PopSugar Must Have box costs $35 plus tax. I probably should have bought a subscription to save money but I always think I’m going to cancel – and then I never do. The January box was not a Marcia box. The February box is a little better for my taste but not my dream box. Since it was a valentine month I would have been happier with something with hearts but then again I have a heart fetish.

Two items shout out V Day though – Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks ($7.27 at amazon.com) and Sweetheart Conversation Hearts (maybe $1). It wouldn’t be V Day without chocolate though so they included a box of Mariebelle’s New York’s chocolate. This is a shop in SoHo that makes some great looking candy. They are small balls of chocolate that you could snack on or put on a dessert. They’d probably be great with those mini marshmallow bits from last month over ice cream. They appear to be $12 but it’s awfully small for $12! They come in 4 flavors and mine is dark chocolate (yes!).february ps book

One small cosmetic item this month – Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain. The shade I received is Honey which is – ta da – the shade I bought when they first came out. Look for this in an upcoming giveaway. (Retail $7.50)

Now onto lifestyle (??) – Connoisseurs Quick Jewelry Cleaner (about $6). This is something I’ll absolutely use. It comes with a short toothbrush for scrubbing.

Last are two items that you can wear. First is a one size fits all (except me most likely) Hanky Panky ($20). I’ve heard great things about Hanky Panky, this is the original rise thong. It comes with a gift with purchase card for a Zoya Polish that is made just for HP.

One of my all time favorite PopSugar Must Have items was a scarf from Brokedown. I’m not alone in that feeling since PopSugar says it was the most popular item they’ve put in a box. Therefore they included a bath wrap that is launching exclusively here first. It’s available for presale ($84) in white, blue, pink, fuschia and black. I’ve got plans for this in a future review!!

Exam time: Pass or Fail for Revlon Colorstay Suede Lipstick

I rarely buy drugstore lip products because of the F Factor aka fragrance. My experience with Revlon, L’Oreal, Maybelline and so many others is that the fragrance makes me a little nauseous. BUT I’ve had some luck with these brands lately so maybe things are looking up for me and the F Factor. I decided to put Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede lipstick to the test. Let’s see how it fairs for this former teacher.

The F Factor – PASS!! I did not notice any discernible fragrance or taste which made me happy.

Colorstay – PASS! The lipstick lasted quite well which is saying a lot since lip products don’t usually last on me. This didn’t flake or ball up.

Product claims – FAIL! Here’s what they say: Is your lipstick giving you both moisture and wear? This velvety soft formula with moisturizing shea butter and aloe is food proof and doesn’t quit. Apply once and go  Here’s what I say – this is not the least bit moisturizing at all. I feel it sucks the moisture out of my lips. When I first apply it, it looks lush and moisturizing. Within a very short time it dries and my lips start shriveling. Plus it’s not “apply once and go” since it didn’t last all day but, like I said above, it does last well (if you like shriveled lips).

Revlon Colorstay display

Revlon Colorstay display

Color choices – PASS. There were a lot of pretty shades  and with 20 choices I’m sure people won’t have a problem finding one. I like light lipsticks and I found just a few that looked light but I think I’m in the minority in my color palette.

Revlon Colorstay in Silhouette

Revlon Colorstay Suede in Silhouette

My color choice  – I’m not sure if this is a pass or fail. I bought 001 (I told you I like light shades!) It started out as a very light pink but brightened up considerably. I think I will call it a PASS but your mileage may vary. It was too light at first but deepened to an attractive shade.

Revlon Suede lipstick swatch of Silhouette

Revlon Suede lipstick swatch of Silhouette

My results with Revlon Suede – I’ve worn this several times now to test it out. Day one I didn’t precondition my lips really. After my shower I’d used Reviva Labs Vitamin E stick but it was a few hours before I put on the lipstick. That day was basically a FAIL. Day 2 I exfoliated my lips with Lush Popcorn scrub, used the Reviva Labs Vitamin E stick early and later applied the lipstick. The results were better but I still didn’t like the feel of my lips. The next day I used the Reviva Labs early again plus Elizabeth Grant’s Collagen Restore about 10 minutes before I put on the lipstick. My lips looked better but the color lasted for less time.  Final result: FAIL

image from revlon.com

image from revlon.com

Packaging – FAIL. Sorry, it just looks cheap. I’ve yet to find a drugstore lipstick that doesn’t so it’s not just the Revlon but it still looks cheap. Although I like the way it clicks up, I’m also worried it could stop working.

Other reviews – FAIL. I’ve read several reviews online about these (after I bought one) and no one seems to rave about them. These are going to be a love or hate product but so far it seems like hate for most.

Price – PASS. I paid $6.99 and got a $2 rebate on it. At $4.99 I can’t complain about the price. But I see the MSRP is $7.99 and they can cost as much as $9.99.

My final grade is a FAIL personally but verging on a PASS . If you still want one, watch for a sale and then just buy one to test it out rather than gathering up a few.

If you’ve tried these what’s your score? Pass or Fail?? — Marcia
