Philip B. Lavender Hand Creme

photo from motherearthliving.comI am very, very picky about lavender. I think it’s beautiful — I love the color, purple is my favorite. I love the health benefits, which include anti-inflammatory properties as well as the ability to ease anxiety, insomnia, and depression. I also love the fragrance…well, I love the fragrance sometimes. I often find lavender-fragranced products to be overwhelming, perfumey, and headache-inducing. So when I find a lavender scented product that is done  right, I just have to share.

Philip B Lavender Hand Creme

The Philip B. Lavender Hand Creme ($35) is simply wonderful. The bottle looks expensive and classic, but it’s actually made from heavy duty plastic so it’s not going to break. The hand creme is thick and luxurious. My dry hands love it because it is a hard working moisturizer but it doesn’t leave hands wet. It’s a perfect bottle of lotion to have beside your bed or at your desk at work.

Philip B Lavender Hand CremeThe hand creme is awesome and the lavender scent is just perfect. It’s not over the top but it still lingers for quite a while. For hours after I apply, every time I move my hands I get a soft, gentle wisp of fragrant lavender. It’s lovely!!

All the reasons to love this beautifully scented hand savior:

  • Fast absorbing: Vitamin-rich formula sinks in instantly to tackle dryness, making rough spots, peeling cuticles and itchy palms a thing of the past.
  • Deceptively rich: African Shea Butter and Safflower Oleosomes hydrate deeply without leaving hands slippery or slick; Colloidal Oatmeal soothes; Panthenol nourishes; Essential Amino Acids strengthen.
  • Year-round healing: Ideal for winter (since it won’t dry out your hands) and the dead of summer (when you want ultra-light, smoothing moisture).
  • The best relaxing botanical scent: Pure Provencal Lavender, naturally aromatherapeutic, is blended with a mix of sheer Flower Oils to obliterate stress.
  • Eco-credentials: Philip B® hand and body crèmes are paraben-free, phthalate-free, made without animal testing, and formulated in the U.S.A. with a low-carbon footprint. The botanicals we use are responsibly sourced and all packaging is recyclable.

If you are looking for some great hand cream or for an excellent gift – sheesh, just tie a ribbon around this and it’s totally giftable – the Philip B. Lavender Hand Creme is an excellent choice.  – Lisa

Holiday Gift Guide for Lustrous Locks

A good friend of mine once said, “It’s all about two things: skin and hair.” I took it to heart and put all of my efforts into having great skin and great hair – and I think she is a genius. Great hair in particular just makes EVERYTHING better. Here are my picks for awesome holidays gifts for creating lustrous locks!

Mastey Paris Hair Care

1.  Mastey Color Protecting Shampoo, Restorative Mask, and Oil Treatment: I can’t get over this fabulous 100% vegan and completely eco-friendly salon line. I never even knew about it until about 6 months ago and I have not only finished everything I’ve tried, I’ve actually stood there in the shower with an empty bottle trying to wish more product into it.

Mastey Paris Hair CareBig favorites of mine include the Color Protecting Shampoo (SAVE! $34), which does a great job of washing my oddball hair – oily roots, dry ends, tons of hair but it’s very fine, color treated, mid-back length…yeah, not many people have all the weird issues I have, so when I find something that works it usually works for everyone else. This creamy shampoo has great ingredients like argan oil and olive oil, and is so gentle you can also use it as a face and body cleanser. The Restorative Mask (SAVE! $22) is an incredible deep conditioning treatment that soothes dry, damaged ends with Omega-3, Omega-6, and Omega-9, Argan Oil, Olive Oil, and Grape Seed Extract. The Oil Treatment (SAVE! $25) is hair treatment perfection in a bottle.  Not too heavy for fine hair, but still nourishing and conditioning.

Philip B Rejuvenating Oil

Philip B Rejuvenating Oil

2.  Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil (SAVE! $30)  This is a VERY interesting hair product – a perfect stocking stuffer for the hair aficionado who has everything but wants even more. You put this on dry hair before washing. It sinks into every single strand of hair, plumping it up for the most possible volume. It makes hair super strong and shiny, and it is also a scalp ‘detox’, getting rid of any built up product and oil. My ends can get very dry and frizzy because I do a lot of heat styling, and this treatment never fails to bring me back to bouncy, shiny hair. Another bonus – it can be used on keratin treated hair!

White Sands Leave In Spray Conditioner

3.  White Sands Leave In Spray Conditioner (SAVE! $15)  I love a good leave-in conditioner and this one from White Sands is superb. It has something called ‘selective conditioning’, which reminds me of my ‘selective listening’ skills (say work and I tune out…say chocolate and you have my full attention!). The Leave In Spray Conditioner hones in on frazzled areas to repair and smooth, giving already healthy areas a lighter treatment.

KISS Instawave Hair Curler

KISS Instawave hair curls

KISS Instawave hair curls

4.  KISS Instawave (SPLURGE! $60)  This is cool. I am totally uncoordinated when it comes to hair styling and it took me about 10 seconds to get the hang of this. The curler does the work for you, wrapping hair around the diamond-ceramic ionic hair curler. My hair is LONG, so usually these types of devices do not work for me, but this works on any length and gives me a loose, wavy curl that lasts all day.

Conair Infiniti Pro Curl Secret

Conair Infiniti Pro Curl Secret curls

Conair Infiniti Pro Curl Secret curls

5.  Conair Infiniti Pro Curl Secret (SPLURGE! $100)  You want curls that last for three days? The Conair Infiniti Pro delivers. This fantastic tool has a learning curve – it took me several times to figure out how to use it correctly for my particular hairstyle – but it has become my go-to for my best curled hair look that lasts several days. Curls are created via the tourmaline ceramic barrel inside the curling machine. You need to section hair, putting each piece in at a time. The machine pulls hair in, curling it tightly and closely to the heated barrel. A beeper tells you when hair is finished, and the Infiniti Pro Curl Secret releases the hair – and it’s fabulously curled. You can decide how tight you want your curl. For me, my hair is so long that I can only do about 3/4 of the length…but oh my, the curls this gives!! Long, wavy, flowy curls that look amazing finger brushed the first day. The second and third day I use a brush and the curl is still there holding strong. Because I have so much hair, the curling is time intensive – about 20 minutes, compared to the 10 minutes with the KISS Instawave – but the results are always worth it. This is a fantastic gift for anyone who wants tons of curls – loose, medium, or tight – that just won’t go limp.  – Lisa

Free flowing waves with Philip B. and John Frieda

All my life I have been chasing the perfect wave. Not like Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in Point Break…although that is my favorite guilty pleasure movie of all time…more like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex in the City.

Not searching for this kind of wave...

Not searching for this kind of wave…

Searching for this kind of wave!

Searching for this kind of wave!

We were recently sent two products to test that together make free-flowing waves for the ultimate summer hairstyle. Move over Keanu and Patrick…John Frieda and Philip B are the dynamic duo making my awesome waves.

Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray

Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray

I start with the Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray ($22). A little sprayed onto damp roots gives a nice lift and helps hold those waves all day.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Conical by Conair

John Frieda Frizz Ease Conical by Conair

After drying hair with a paddle brush, it’s time for the John Frieda® 1 ½ Inch Frizz Ease® Conical by Conair ($39.99). I have no experience using a curling iron without a clamp, and had my doubts as I am not exactly known for my awesome hand/eye coordination. The benefit of clamplessness (is that a word??) is no danger of awkward, unnatural bends in the hair.

John Frieda Curling Iron glove

My biggest fear was burning myself, but included with the Conical Curling Iron is a very smart three-fingered glove.

John Frieda Conical Curling IronJohn Frieda Curling Iron controls

This wand has a 1 ½ inch clamp-free conical barrel with a titanium ceramic coating. The coating prevents frizz and keeps hair looking smooth. It heats up very quickly, reaching 400ºF in only 30 seconds. I wrap sections around the wand, holding them in place with my gloved fingers. It definitely makes for natural looking waves, while a curling iron with a clamp gives me a tighter curl.

After I curl each section, I go back to the Philip B. Self Adjusting Hair Spray. I have very fine hair, so non-aerosol hairspray almost never works for me. It’s just too heavy and instead of holding my curls, it typically kills them. I found that this hairspray works great as long as I remember to hold it a good 12 inches away  from my hair when I spray. This helps give it room to develop into a finer spray that won’t clump hair together or make it stiff. The ingredients include Vitamin B5 and amino acids for conditioning hair.  Each spray strengthens hold, so I use just one spray for a light hold and three for major hold.

Ok, so I’m no Carrie Bradshaw, but the waves still look pretty good! You can try finding your own perfect wave with the John Frieda® 1 ½ Inch Frizz Ease® Conical by Conair available on Amazon.com and Philip B. Self Adjusting Hair Spray on PhilipB.com.  – Lisa

July’s Glossybox love

It’s rare that I open a box and say “OH MY GOSH, what is that delicious smell?“, that’s just not typical of my style. But that’s exactly what happened when I opened up the July 2014 Glossybox that was sent for review. My nose stood up and took notice! I couldn’t wait to get into the box to see what it was that was so delicious and then to discover what other products that the Glossybox Subscription box shared. I only wish I could waft the smell through the computer to you.

Glossybox for August 2014

Glossybox for July 2014

For July 2014 there are 4 very deluxe samples and 1 full size item in this Glossybox. I know that there are some variations but for the most part this is most likely what you’d receive if you subscribe. Products for August will be 5 of these brands: Malin+Goetz, GlamGlow, Mitchell and Peach, Skin Inc, Philip B, Nail Gals and The Aloe Source.

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

I couldn’t stand the suspense and my nose honed in on the MITCHELL AND PEACH BODY CREAM. Talk about luxurious and you have this body cream. Talk about fragrance that’s good enough to eat and you have this body cream. I’d never heard of Mitchell and Peach before since I’m not an aficionado of body products but this is a brand I’m interested in knowing more about.

Mitchell and Peach ingredients

Mitchell and Peach ingredients

It’s made in Kent, England and contains pure English honey, organic cocoa, Vitamin B25 and shea butter along with steam-distilled floral essential oils from the Mitchell’s estate. The dry down is immediate on this so you don’t need to sit around worrying about when you can finish getting dressed. This is a winner. A full size of 6.08 oz is $61 and this is a 1.4 oz sample (value approximately $14).

GlamGlow

GlamGlow

The next thing I dug out is GLAM GLOW YOUTHMUD TINGLEEXFOLIATE TREATMENT. This has always fascinated me but I never was willing to pay $69 for a full size. This 10 minute mask is comprised of French sea clay, volcanic pumice rock, and pieces of green tea leaf. Now this doesn’t sound delicious like the body cream but it’s touted to be a facial in ajar and what better way to try it then to sample it with Glossybox? You can buy it in a sample size jar for $19 at Sephora but here it is in this $21 Glossybox; paid for the box with this one item!!

(Malin+Goetz) Mojito Lip Balm

(Malin+Goetz) Mojito Lip Balm

How about a drink without worrying about alcohol? Put the (Malin+Goetz) Mojito Lip Balm on to soothe your lips and let the mojito flavor moisturize without stickiness. A .35 oz full size is $12 making this worth about $7.50.

3 great Glossybox treats

The only item that was in a box comes from SKIN INC and it’s a CUSTOM-BLENDED ANTI-AGING SERUM. This is the cutest thing once you open the box. Aren’t you intrigued by the colors within?

Skin Inc Custom Blended Anti-Aging Serum

Skin Inc Custom Blended Anti-Aging Serum

Skin Inc Custom Blended Anti-Aging Serum

Skin Inc Custom Blended Anti-Aging Serum

I adore serums, I’m finding that serums are what is keeping my skin looking its best and much more youthful so I’m excited about this. Not only does it contain hyaluronic acid (my fave for hydration) but it takes Coenzyme Q10 and encapsulates it with elasticity promoting marine collagen. I can’t wait to try this out. This full size serum costs $45. Full size!!!! Are you ready to buy yet??

Philip B

Philip B

Last but not least is PHILIP B PH RESTORATIVE DETANGLING TONING MIST. Philip B is a well known high end brand of haircare. This toning mist is a double duty product from his brand. You can use this right after you wash your hair to help detangle and comb through and you can also use it to revive your hair style during the day. It helps leave your hair frizz free and shinier. What I like about it is that it’s keratin safe so I was happy to see this in the box. A full size of 4.23 oz is $24 and this is slightly less than half size at 2 oz so the value is about $10.

If you’ve been doing the math you can see that what looks like a box of samples is actually worth a lot, especially if you like what’s inside your Glossybox. A subscription is $21 per month and this month’s box is a $95 value. I will be trying everything in the box too so it really is a value. august 14 glossybox open in lid

For more fun, if you are a new subscriber and use the code CIATE at checkout, you’ll receive a full size CIATE Nail Polish in your first box. That’s a $15 value for subscribing. Now’s the time to insure that you’ll be receiving a box of fun in the fall. — Marcia

UPDATE: The new code is fabulous!! Enter MAGIC at checkout to get a free Eyeko Magic Mascara valued at $24.

Bergdorf Goodman and Glossybox – a match made in heaven

The Bergdorf Goodman Glossybox for women has a multitude of variations so my box may not be typical of the one you’d end up with. There are 15 different items and you’ll be receiving 6 of them with at least one item from Napoleon Perdis, Revive and Lancer. There are so many wonderful products that your box will be a delightful surprise. Here are my great surprises:

Napoleon Perdis primer and Revive Eye Renewal Serum

Napoleon Perdis primer and Revive Eye Renewal Serum

NAPOLEON PERDIS – AUTO PILOT PRE-FOUNDATION SKIN PRIMER

Napoleon Perdis cosmetics are well known and his Skin Primer is one of his most talked about products. This deluxe sample helps create a flawless finish to skin. This primer is great for making your foundation last longer. It’s very creamy but it does have a fragrance.(full size $45/1.7 fl oz/ sample size value$13.25 for .5 oz)

REVIVE – EYE RENEWAL SERUM FIRMING BOOSTER

I’ll never be unhappy about a product this luxurious in a subscription box. And since it’s an eye serum I did a little happy dance. This is a lightweight serum that wears well on me under makeup. It’s designed to tighten the undereye area to make it look more lifted. It doesn’t feel tight under my eyes though and concealer goes on smoothly with this. (Full size is $140 for .5 fl oz/deluxe sample is valued at $28).

Philip B Creme Rinse and Lancer Eye Cream

Philip B Creme Rinse and Lancer Eye Cream

PHILIP B – LIGHT-WEIGHT DEEP CONDITIONING CREME RINSE

This luscious smelling conditioner is both lightweight and rich at the same time. I’ve just used it once and my hair looked silky smooth and very well moisturized. In summer we need extra moisturization so this is a bonus to have. You can also travel with luxury hair care with this deluxe sample. (Full size of 6 oz. is $26 making this 2 fl oz sample worth $8.75).

LANCER – EYE CONTOUR LIFTING CREAM

Got me again! This 0.17 fl oz size is perfect for travel (as is the Revive) but I couldn’t wait to go anywhere to try it out. This contans caffeine and light diffusers so it’s particularly great during the day time but just as nice at night. It’s meant to help diminish the appearance of fine lines, crow’s feet, puffiness and dark circles. Sounds like a dream come true. A full size of .5 oz is $95 making this sample worth about $30.

Lancome Ultimate Elixir and Atelier Rose Cologne

Lancome Ultimate Elixir and Atelier Rose Cologne

LANCOME – ABSOLUE L’EXTRAIT REGENERATING ULTIMATE ELIXIR

Yikes, a full size is $360 for 1.7 oz. The sample size is 5mL/0.16fl oz. This elixir is top of the line Lancome. It uses a state of the art biotechnological process to extract from the heart of the rare and resilient Lancome Rose. It’s meant to help with firmer and more elastic skin and to give you radiance. This is the type of item that you’d have to spend a fortune at a counter to get a sample of.

ATELIER COLOGNE – ROSE ANONYME COLOGNE ABSOLUE

I love to look at mini bottles of fragrance. I don’t wear fragrance but the minis can’t be resisted. I’m happy to give away all my sample vials but I’m not giving up the bottles that easily. That said this is a musky Turkish Rose scent that contains velvet oud, Indonesian patchouli, mystic papyrus and Somalian incense. (Full size is $140 for 3.4 oz; mini is valued at $10)

$25 gift card to BG in your Glossybox

$25 gift card to BG in your Glossybox

I’m not done because we can’t forget the gift card that will be in your Glossybox for $25 off any purchase you make. If you love something you’ve gotten a sample of then use it towards a full size or just pick something you’ve wanted and you’ll spend $25 less.

Bergdorf Goodman Glossybox for Women

Bergdorf Goodman Glossybox for Women

I’m impressed with the variety of items I received and the long list that Bergdorf Goodman shows that you could receive. There’s nothing more fun than a box of high end surprises.

Now one last thing! As you may know, a Glossybox subscription is $21 a month. The June box is a special Stars & Stripes edition and if you sign up, use the code HAIR, you’ll receive a Nioxin hair thickener with your fabulous box. Don’t hesitate – order now to get in on the fun. — Marciaglossybox stars and stripes

Blush.com Mystery Makeup Box remains a mystery for August

I don’t know what to say about the August blush.com Mystery Makeup Box. This is my 4th month to subscribe and the first month that I’m disappointed. I’ve been thinking about what to write and I realize it’s my personal likes and dislikes that influence my feelings. I’ll be interested in what you have to say about the contents and if you’d be happy with this box/bag.

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August

From what I’ve read blush.com (a subsidary of dermstore) says this box is worth $130. I pay $24.95 for my subscription though they often have specials as the month is running out that give you a discount on your first box. My previous reviews are linked here. From the looks of the items on the card I expected to be happier than I am with the contents. On the card it specifically says that the contents are “selected by our panel just for YOU”. (They need to learn about Wantable.com!)

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August contents

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August contents

Let’s start with makeup since that’s what I love the most. There are 3 items in here that I’d consider cosmetics:

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August cosmetics

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August cosmetics

Pixi eyeliner, Anastasia Lash Genius, Vapour Organic Lip Gloss

Pixi eyeliner, Anastasia Lash Genius, Vapour Organic Lip Gloss

1) Pixi eyeliner – this is a star and I’d be thrilled to find this in my box but I personally just ordered a slew of Pixi pencils. The shade is Deep Plum and it’s in the set I ordered. This is a winner though, just bad timing for me.

2) Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat – this is another star even though it’s a mini size. The problem is that I have 3 of these already. Not blush.com’s fault since how many people have 3? But it is a disappointment for me.

3) Vapour Organic Beauty Elixir Lip Gloss – a beautiful gloss but the card says Hush which is a nude pink and I ended up with Hypnotic which is sheer burgundy. I like light lips so Twinkle or Hush would have made me happy. This just makes me wonder who will end up with it. Again not their fault but another disappointment.

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August skincare items

blush.com Mystery Makeup Box August skincare items

4) Carita Paris Biological Face Mask – this is a mini (a full size sells for $90) and it sounds good from what dermstore says. It did surprise me to find so many deluxe samples this time since the other boxes all had full size products. This is a revitalizing and repair mask for mature skin, for instant beauty enhancement. I do have mature skin, but does everyone who subscribes to this subscription have mature skin? If I were younger this would steer me away from future boxes.

5) Coola SPF – Again a deluxe sample size. This one is Cucumber – I like to eat cucumbers but do I want to smell like one? It’s a matte finish with SPF 30. A full size (1.7 oz) is $32 but this is just 0.23 oz. I won’t mention that I have about 4 Coola minis from other boxes – or maybe I just did.

6) Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant – yet another deluxe sample. That makes 4. A full size of 4.2 oz sells for $48. This is 0.5 oz. This exfoliant is one you mix yourself since it is made of granules. Here’s what dermstore says about it: “Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant purifies and brightens your complexion. A blend of strawberries, lactic acid and rice gently exfoliate, buffing away impurities and exposing new dermal cells for a smooth, radiant appearance. Vitamin-rich rhubarb enriches your skin with vital nutrients while chickpea flour absorbs excess oil and minimizes the look of large pores.”

Mor Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia

Mor Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia

7) Mor Emporium Hand Cream in Snow Gardenia – a full size item at least. The problem for me is that I hate florals and I hate gardenia especially. Oh woe is me. I’m sure it’s wonderful – for someone else. This is 3.3 fl oz but dermstore only carries mini sizes. Now this totally confuses me. They sell mini sizes but send a full size – with the other mini products they only sell full sizes. I’m baffled. It appears to be a value of $20 though on other websites.

Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist

Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist

8) Philip B. Maui Wowie Beach Mist – this full size product is their premier item of the month. This is the product that they had teasers with. So why is this a problem? It’s full size, it’s prestige! But it’s to create beachy textured hair and my hair is straight as a pin. It’s not ever going to be beachy and textured, it just doesn’t operate that way. This costs $22 and I’m sure it’s fabulous – for the right head of hair.

So here I am, a grumpy bear. grumpy cartoon bearGreat products with 4 full sized ones and 4 deluxe samples would normally make me happy but there’s nothing I’m excited about using other than the Pixi eyeliner and I’ve got that on its way to me. Please let me know what you think of this box. Would you be a grumpy bear or would you be full and sassy like this little guy? — Marcia happy bear

July’s blush.com Mystery Beauty Box that’s really a bag

blush mystery july

I always feel funny calling the Blush Mystery Beauty Box a box. It may come in a box in the mail but it’s packaged in a bag so you’ll have to excuse my little bit of OCD when I call this subscription a bag. The Blush Mystery box/bag comes from Blush.com which is also Dermstore.com. Dermstore has three stores in one – dermstore, blush and hair envy; so they cover the gamut. I am not affiliated with them but I do like buying from them since you always end up with great freebies. They almost always have a free magazine subscription and always include extras which can be tiny or big. Anyway back to the box/bag, this is my third month for my subscription and I’m still liking this. It costs me $24.95 a month and I more than get my money’s worth. This is what I received in my July box/bag.

1) Lumene Vitamin C+ Pure Radiance 24h Lotion – this is for normal/combination skin and is a pleasant moisturizer. It is meant for day and night but it doesn’t have SPF so you’d need to add one if you wanted to use this for daytime. What makes this stand out is that it contains an ingredient called Arctic Cloudberry which works with the Vitamin C to improve and protect your skin. I haven’t used this since I’m loaded with moisturizers that I love but I am impressed that this product contains over 90% natural ingredients. ($19.99)blush mystery july lumene front

2) Hydroxotone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex with SPF 15 – this is a heavy duty wrinkle cream. Here’s what Dermstore says: “Hydroxatone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex SPF 15 is a powerful anti-aging moisturizer with a dual-action formula. Age-defying complexes, Matrixyl™ 3000, is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles up to 45% while Argireline®, a peptide complex, visibly fights the signs of aging. Instantly boosting your skin’s hydration and suppleness, hyaluronic acid plumps up lines and wrinkles while fortifying your skin’s natural moisture barrier.” This comes in 2 sizes and this is the smaller one at 0.5 oz and sells for $49.95.

3) Bioelements Quick Refiner – this is a sample of a liquid exfoliator.  I really like this since it’s great for pore cleansing. The sample is .25 oz and the full size is 3 oz ($46.00). I put this in My Favorites folder at Dermstore so that when I’m ready to buy it I’ll be able to get it for less.
