Lisa’s Top Five Favorites from Paula’s Choice Cosmetics

Top Five Paula's Choice Cosmetics Favorites

There are many, many reasons why I am such a huge fan of the Paula’s Choice line, but really what it comes down to is this:  Paula’s Choice is full of no BS, workhorse products that are the foundation of an excellent skin care and color cosmetics arsenal. Is every single product my favorite? No, there are some products (hello foundations and concealer!) that have never worked for me. Is this a perfect line? No, there are too many skin care products with similar functions and the names are way too complicated and confusing. That said, this is the line I recommend for anyone new to beauty products, for anyone looking for effective yet gentle skin care, and especially for any teenagers who want the perfect products to treat their crazy skin care needs.

paula-begoun

Love her or hate her, Paula Begoun has had a huge impact on the cosmetics industry. Me? I love her.  Way back in the day I bought her books, read them over and over, underlined, highlighted, tabbed…I subscribed to her newsletter and saved every single one, pouring over them and making my wish lists of the best things to purchase. When she started her own cosmetics and skin care line I wondered if she could keep her objectivity. Much to my delight, I think Paula is still the same sort of prickly but totally no-nonsense expert that I can always count on for fantastic advice.

I have way more than five favorites from Paula’s Choice, but here are my top five products that I purchase over and over (and always have several backups waiting the wings just in case!). I have chosen only skin care items so I didn’t even have to wrestle with my favorite color items.

  1. Gentle Makeup Remover ($16)
  2. Professional Blemish Extracting Tool ($14)
  3. Clear Extra Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment with 5% Benzoyl Peroxide ($19)
  4. Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment ($56)
  5. 10% Niacinamide Booster($42)
Paula's Choice Gentle Makeup Remover

Paula’s Choice Gentle Makeup Remover

My first favorite is the Gentle Touch Makeup Remover. This is the very best makeup remover I have ever tried and I buy this four bottles at a time whenever there is a sale. I usually wear full coverage foundation and my skin tends to break out especially in my t-zone. So I take cleansing very seriously, and the first step is always makeup remover. This dual-phase liquid makeup remover needs to be shaken first and after squirting some onto a cleansing pad you wipe off makeup prior to cleansing. It removes everything, even waterproof mascara and the most tenacious lipstick. It’s completely safe to use on eyes, and it leaves skin feeling moist and hydrated but not oily or greasy.

One end of the Professional Blemish Extracting Tool

One end of the Professional Blemish Extracting Tool

The other end of the Professional Blemish Extracting Tool

The other end of the Professional Blemish Extracting Tool

My second favorite is the dual-ended Professional Blemish Extracting Tool. Extraction is necessary and correct extraction is essential!! PC has this fantastic stainless steel extractor that safely removes blackheads and whiteheads without tearing the skin and making a bad situation even worse.  You’ve got to get those blackheads out – if you don’t, you risk enlarged pores and serious infection.  Plus, congestion of the pores is painful to have and painful for other people to look at. This baby puts pressure around the congested pore without digging in like your fingernails do, providing even pressure that gently pushes the blackhead or whitehead out of the pore. It is the BOMB.

Clear Extra Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment with 5% Benzoyl PeroxideMy third favorite is the Clear Extra Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment with 5% Benzoyl Peroxide. This is a fantastic spot treatment that works quickly without stressing already stressed skin. It’s not just triage – it also prevents future breakouts and controls very oily areas. I use it around my nose and on my chin every morning and night, and sometimes I use it as an all-over mask in the evening. This 5% benzoyl peroxide acne treatment is fantastic for teens and it works on every skin type. I find that most benzoyl peroxide treatments have other ingredients that irritate and dry out skin, but this light lotion is super gentle and has nothing irritating in it at all.

Paulas Choice Retinol Treatment 2

My fourth favorite is the Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment. This is an exfoliating skin treatment that is applied after cleansing.  Here are all the skin ailments it treats:

  • Acne Breakouts, Anti-Aging, Brown Spots, Wrinkles
  • Firms skin, smoothing deep wrinkles and fine lines
  • Reduces dark spots and uneven skin tone, refines pore size

This is a retinol product and I know that some people have problems tolerating retinol. However, even if you have a history of difficulty with retinols, I urge you to give this a try. It has licorice, oat extract and other anti-irritants that make it great for sensitive skin. My skin has always reacted well to retinols, and this product in particular gives me beautiful and immediate results. My skin is much smoother, pores smaller, fine lines less noticeable. Retinol actually stimulates collagen production, so the results over time are fantastic.

Paula's Choice 10% Niacinamide BoosterPaula's Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster

My fifth favorite is the 10% Niacinamide Booster, one of Paula’s newest products for reducing pore size. My first bottle was sent as a press sample, but I used that all up and have already bought another. This is great stuff that makes the rest of my skin care even better. Here’s why your pores get larger as you age: skin naturally sheds built up oil and dirt. When we are young, this process happens pretty quickly, so our skin looks almost as if it doesn’t even have pores. As we get older, especially after age 30, this process slows down so dirt and oil stays inside our pores longer. The increased collection of dirt and oil causes pores to stretch out and become enlarged. Exfoliating on a regular basis helps your skin’s shedding process, but even with the most diligent skin care maintenance pores become enlarged.  The 10% Naicinamide Booster does four main things: improves uneven skin tone, reduces the appearance of pore size, improves skin texture, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3. It’s a very exciting ingredient that has been scientifically proven to seriously shrink enlarged pores as well as wrinkles. What is really cool about this product is that it’s a super lightweight serum that can be used alone or added to another serum or moisturizer. I put a few drops in my treatment serum every morning and every night and I am truly impressed with my results!

If you are a long time Paula’s Choice fan, I hope that my picks give you incentive to try them. If you haven’t tried this line out, I can’t recommend it highly enough.  I know that you will quickly find your five favorites that will become staples of your skin care regimen.

Quick and easy brows with Paula’s Choice Brow Defining Cream Duo

Paula's Choice Brow Defining Cream DuoI swear, EVERY morning I am running late.  I keep trying to simplify my makeup routine more and more to make it easier to get to work on time.  My least favorite part to do are eyes – if you can’t do eye makeup right, I think you shouldn’t do it at all.  It requires a steady hand and patience, neither of which are in typically available for me in the mornings.

I have eliminated any sort of complicated eyeshadow.  I’m just doing a wash of a base color, usually MAC Paint Pot in Layin’ Low or Painterly, a thicker line of gel pencil eyeliner (I am really like the Shea Moisture Ultra Smooth Long Wear Eye Pencil these days), a quick squeeze from my eyelash curler then a very quick coat of mascara.  One area where I never skimp, though, is brows.  I think most people neglect this part of their face, but 20 seconds can really change your look, and Paula’s Choice Brow Defining Cream Duo ($21) is terrific.

Paula's Choice Brow Defining Cream Duo

Paula’s Choice Brow Defining Cream Duo

Paula’s Choice is one of my favorite go-to lines for skin care, but this line also has some really exceptional cosmetic products.  I always have a Brow Defining Cream Duo on hand and I use it every single day.  It is so easy to use.  Unlike many of the brushes that come inside compacts, the one in this brow duo is excellent.  I use the spoolie end to brush my brows up first, then I use the angled brush side and dip it in each of the two colors of brow cream to make a color a few shades lighter than my natural brow color.  Then, I quickly tap the cream onto my brows, and finish with a quick sweep of the spoolie.

Paula's Choice Brow Defining Cream Duo

Paula’s Choice Brow Defining Cream Duo

I prefer a cream brow product to powder for two reasons.  First, the cream doesn’t smudge like powder.  Second, a cream product holds my brows in place.  I love the two shades in the Brow Defining Cream Duo – I can use just one or mix them together.  Unless your hair is very fair or very dark, these two shades will work for you.  Once you use this product a few times and get the hang of it, you will be astounded at the difference groomed brows make, and you will be amazed at how quickly you can use this.

Whether you like to take your time with your makeup or you are always in a hurry, this is a brow product that you will absolutely swear by.  Another bonus – all Paula’s Choice products are 100% fragrance free, clinically proven to be non-irritating, and never tested on animals.  – Lisa

My choice? Paula’s Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster

paulas-choice-10-naicinamide-treatmentAs we age, some things get smaller and some get bigger. What gets smaller? Height. Lip size. Short term memory. What gets bigger? Nose. Feet. Pores. I can deal with the nose and feet, but bigger pores?  Ugh.
I turn to Paula’s Choice over and over for really excellent skin care that is effective and affordable. One of her newest products is the 10% Niacinamide Booster ($42). My first bottle was sent as a press sample, but I used that all up and have already bought another. This is great stuff that makes the rest of my skin care even better.

  • Helps promote a more even skin texture and overall skin tone

I love many Paula’s Choice products, and the 10% Niacinamide is an especially impressive addition to an already fantastic line. Regardless of what other products you use, I highly recommend you pick this one up to boost your skin care results and shrink those pores.

Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette review and swatches

Paula's Choice Blush It On Contour Palette

Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette

I probably recommend the Paula’s Choice line more than any other, but honestly mostly for skin care. I have had a love/hate relationship with her color cosmetics. Cream Concealer? Not for me. Foundation? None of them are my favorites. Lip gloss? Nothing special.  Some of the color cosmetics are fantastic though – love love love the Bright & Berry Lip Collection, Brow Defining Cream, and Eyeshadow Palette.

I recently placed an order for about 10 of the Gentle Touch Makeup Remover – it’s so good I get anxious when I am down to five bottles! – and at the last-minute decided to add in the Blush It On Contour Palette. This is Limited Edition and costs $36. I was a bit uneasy spending that amount when I haven’t loved Paula’s blushes in the past, but I am happy I took the plunge and I’ll bet you might want to invest after reading my review.

Paula's Choice Blush It On Contour Palette

Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette:  top row left to right – Pearl, Delicate Coral, Peony; bottom row left to right:  Bronze, Dusty Rose, Soft Mauve

Prior incarnations of blush from Paula didn’t do much for me. They just weren’t pigmented enough and didn’t last on my blush-eating skin. However, this palette is a wonderful improvement from the previous blush formulas. The Blush It On Contour Palette has six shades for highlighting, contouring, and blushing like a school girl. The formula is silky smooth, blends in beautifully, and has a satin matte finish. The colors are long-wearing with minimal fading, and they don’t oxidize throughout the day.

Paula's Choice Blush It On Contour Palette

Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette left to right:  Pearl, Delicate Coral, Peony

The highlighting shade is Pearl, which swatches pretty dramatic but has a beautiful, glowy effect on that looks very natural. Paula is typically anti-shimmer yet pro-luminescence, and this highlighter definitely delivers. I love it on the tops of my cheekbones for a youthful glow, as well as down the center of my nose with the Bronze shade lightly brushed down the sides to give a ‘thinning out’ effect.

Delicate Coral is a very pretty coral shade that is gorgeous on warm skin tones and deeper skin shades. I love this when I have faux-tanned my skin into the medium range; it looks like summertime and sandy beaches to me.

Peony is a very pretty medium pink without shimmer. It is a perfect everyday shade for work, and it layers nicely for a more dramatic evening look.

Paula's Choice Blush It On Contour Palette

Paula’s Choice Blush It On Contour Palette left to right:  Bronze, Soft Rose, Dusty Mauve

Moving on down to the bottom row, Bronze provides the ‘contour’ in the palette name. This is a soft but versatile contour/bronzer. I like that it’s matte – I think too much sparkle and shimmer ruins some otherwise terrific contour products. I love this just underneath my blush to give my cheekbones more definition and, as I mentioned, it’s awesome paired with Pearl for thinning out the nose.

Soft Rose is a light pink that pale complexions will adore. It’s probably too light for any skin tone darker than medium, but this is a great ballerina pink that is just tad bit peachy.

Dusty Mauve is my favorite of the blush shades. It’s a deeper berry pink that might be a tad too dark for you pale princesses, but is amazing on any shade darker than porcelain. It’s the most dramatic of the shades so go easy with it and build up to the color you want.

If I had my druthers, I would love for Paula to add two more shades to this palette – one more highlighter with less pink tint and more sheen, and one more bronzer in a deeper shade. But that’s really nitpicking.

While none of the colors are dramatic, they all give beautiful, natural washes of color that last all day. This is a great workhorse palette that you will find yourself reaching for time and time again. Skincare 101 – my Paula’s Choice regimen

Paula's Choice Resist line - my personal regimen

Paula’s Choice Resist line – my personal regimen

Makeup Wars is always a favorite for me. If you haven’t been hanging around Beauty Info Zone then you might not know that Makeup Wars is when a group of bloggers choose a topic and we all post about the same general idea. But the articles are so varied since we are all coming from different places in our life. Skincare 101 is a most exciting post because I know that I’m going to learn so much from the other “warriors” and what they are going to share.

I’m sharing my Paula’s Choice Resist products that I received from #PRIMP, Pretty in my Pocket, after a wonderful phone consultation. I’ve loved and used Paula’s Choice products for years. But the line has gotten so big that I was at a loss as to what I really should be using. I read the descriptions and everything sounds wonderful. The phone consult which takes between 10 and 15 minutes and is free to all, is perfect. Your representative discusses your skin type, age, skin concerns, and what you want to work on and then creates your own personal regimen. You can then pick out which items you want to start with or wait for another day. I recommend that you don’t wait though. I’ve been using my PC Resist products for 4 months now and don’t intend to stop. I’ll add in other lines that I want to review but I’ve always gone back to Paula’s Choice.

For this review you need to know that I’ve got skin that used to be combination but is now on the dry side, especially in cold weather. My concerns are keeping my face looking as youthful as possible while dealing with large pores, fine lines, and firmness.

CLEANSING:

Paula's Choice Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser and Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner

Paula’s Choice Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser and Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner

I use both the Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser and Advanced Replenishing Toner morning and evening. There are other cleansers in the Resist line but for my needs (and advancing age) I needed one that is gentle and hydrating. This is a lotion that cleanses my skin and removes any facial makeup without stripping my skin of essential oils. While it works for all skin types it’s especially recommended for normal to dry.

The Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner is a step that I often resist. There’s so much misinformation around about using a toner and it’s often skipped but it can be an essential step in balancing your skin and keeping it well preserved (and not pickled). This toner is one for anti-aging which can be seen in the ingredients. It helps build collagen for firmer skin, it contains anti-irritants to calm redness, and it has licorice extract & acetyl glucosamine to improve skin tone. The packaging is hard plastic so you can’t really squeeze it out, you pour it onto a cotton pad and there’s never too much that comes out. It removes all vestiges of makeup. It’s great after using a cleansing cloth if you are too tired to use a soap and water cleanser since it removes all the residue from the cloth.

DAYTIME:

Paula's Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment and Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer

Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment and Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer

After cleansing and toning I use Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment and Resist Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer. These are daytime only for me because of the ingredients in them.

The Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment with 5% AHA contains glycolic acid which gently exfoliates and protects your skin’s barrier. This was chosen for me because it helps fade sun damage. I’m a firm believer in SPF but that’s not how I was brought up. I apply this AHA treatment as soon as I’ve finished with the two cleansing products. I like it to sink into my skin while I’m putting on my eye makeup. This is a light yellow creamy lotion that makes my skin feel very soft. I love anything that helps me correct my uneven skintone so this is a definite rebuy for me.

Resist Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer w/Broad Spectrum SPF 25 is the only moisturizer I took on a recent trip. I was packing light and this tube was exactly what I needed. I used it both day and night but at home I just use this during the day. Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer fits all the things I’m looking for in a daytime product: fragrance-free, broad spectrum sunscreen (mineral based), works as an anti-aging product, contains antioxidants, and my foundation never balls up when using this PC sunscreen.

NIGHTTIME:

Paula's Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer and Resist BHA 9

Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer and Resist BHA 9

Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer and her Resist BHA 9 are the two products I use only at night. After cleansing and toning I first apply Resist BHA 9 and let it work its magic on my skin. This thin tube is totally different than the other BHA I have from Paula’s Choice. I laughed when I got this because it’s subtitled as “for stubborn imperfections” which describes my life to a tee. This is actually a product that’s good for so many of us as it is a concentrated salicylic acid spot treatment to tackle the most stubborn imperfections for dramatic results without irritation. It’s to be used for acne breakouts, Anti-Aging, blackheads, enlarged pores, and keratosis pilaris. Being stubborn myself I use this all over my face and not as a spot treatment. My main goal with this is for my enlarged pores and anti-aging. I am seeing a difference on the pores on my cheeks, especially when I apply cream blush. During Christmas there were so many deals popping up that I bought a set containing this BHA so I wouldn’t run out. It has a slightly oily feel to it. I’ve never had any irritation with this. It’s a winner for me.

Paula's Choice Resist BHA 9

Paula’s Choice Resist BHA 9

Since the Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer has retinol in it, it’s strictly for night use around here. This was chosen for me because I had said I’m concerned with fine lines and future wrinkles. It’s very lightweight so I thought that it wouldn’t be enough moisturizing for me this winter but I was mistaken. I’m testing other skincare right now but I make sure to use this Barrier Repair Moisturizer a few times a week. The retinol in this works to improve skintone and I’ve been very happy with that overall. The percentage of retinol isn’t mentioned anywhere but it’s a mild one. This is best for normal to dry skin and happily is fragrance free.

EYE CREAM:

Paula's Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream

Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream

Oh what an uproar there was when Paula’s Choice announced they now had an eye cream. It was always her stand that we didn’t need a separate cream for eyes and many of her products are recommended to be used near your eyes. But women (especially me) want an eye cream and Paula listened. Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream was brought out after much testing since she knew she’d be scrutinized by everyone for going against her grain. This is a nicely rich eye cream that hasn’t caused me to have any milia. I used it religiously for 2 months and now alternate it with any others that I’m testing. I love the packaging of it but I often get out more than I actually need. The amount on my finger is really enough for both eyes twice. I try to squeeze lightly so that not too much comes out. I rub it between my fingers to soften it and pat it on under my eyes. While it’s a very good eye cream at a good price, I’m not sure if this is a repurchase, but then again I have a drawer full of eye creams so we’ll see down the road.

There you have my Paula’s Choice regimen. When I’m ready to add new products or I have a question about one of their products I’d have no problem calling again or using their live chat online. I also have no problem telling you that this is a line to be trusted and one I believe in. If I had a daughter, I’d gladly steer her towards Paula’s Choice to find her own routine.

Keeping it clean with Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser and Advanced Replenishing Toner

I’m a huge, huge Paula fan from way back…in fact, it’s really thanks to her that I am a beauty blogger today. Her skin care line is one I go back to again and again, so I was more than happy to test some items the BIZ was sent. I think that this line excels in two areas: cleansing and treatment. Today I am excited to be sharing with you two of my favorite cleansing items, the RESIST PERFECTLY BALANCED CLEANSER ($18 for 6.4 oz) and the RESIST ADVANCED REPLENISHING TONER ($23 for 4 oz)

RESIST PERFECTLY BALANCED CLEANSER

RESIST PERFECTLY BALANCED CLEANSER

RESIST PERFECTLY BALANCED CLEANSER

This is a perfect workhorse cleanser. It’s amazing for anyone with oily or t-zone issues – I think she has better cleansers for those with dry skin. This one is terrific for removing excess oil as well as whatever is left from the day while at the same time treating and hydrating skin.

RESIST PERFECTLY BALANCED CLEANSER

It’s a light lotion cleanser that has a slight foam. Works great with any cleansing device because it has some slip. I do like to wipe off my eye makeup first with Paula’s Gentle Touch Makeup Remover ($15) but this cleanser does take off eye makeup without stinging my eyes. The ceramides and the hyaluronic acid are wonderfully soothing ingredients that leave skin super happy. Great stuff!
RESIST ADVANCED REPLENISHING TONER
I am a big believer in toners. Good ones remove any last vestiges of makeup while also calming skin. This one does both, plus the antioxidants fight wrinkles and free radicals. The bottle is a squeeze bottle that can be a little challenging at first – I was putting way too much toner on my cotton pads – but it can’t be in a spray bottle because the toner has a lotion quality to it that’s too thick to spray. Check out everything it does for skin:
  • Anti-Aging, Extra Sensitive Skin, Wrinkles
  • Soothes Dry/Very Dry Skin
  • Antioxidant-rich formula reduces wrinkles & repairs damaged cells
  • Licorice extract & acetyl glucosamine improve skin tone
  • Soothing formula calms skin while removing last traces of makeup
  • Unique milky texture leaves skin looking radiant & feeling unbelievably soft
  • This product is 100% fragrance- and colorant-free.

I especially appreciate this toner when I have dry spots or chapped areas from the cold Michigan weather. This is, truly, the best toner I have ever used.

I recommend the Paula’s Choice line all the time – it has fabulous basics that work and the Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser and Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner are fantastic staples to include in your skin care routine. Paula’s Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

Paula's Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

Paula’s Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

I love holiday lip colors – deep pinks, berries, and plums. They are fun and just so festive! A collection I am loving that is definitely holiday perfect is the new limited edition Berry & Bright Lip Collection ($45) from Paula’s Choice.

Paula's Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

Paula’s Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

True confession – while I am a big Paula fan (and have been since the 1990’s, that’s how OLD I am), I’ve never liked any of her lip products. I am also not a huge fan of lip crayons…I’m more of a lip gloss lover. However…I like these, I really like these!! The four chubby lip crayons are in festive shades: Currant, a traditional medium red; Plum, a deep purple/red; Winterberry, a pink/red; and Sugar, a pink opalescent. Sugar is great alone or over the other three matte shades to lighten them up and give some depth.

Paula's Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

Paula's Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

So why do I love these when lip pencils aren’t really my thing?  Six reasons:

1.  These have NO scent and NO taste. What else would you expect from Paula??

2.  The chubby pencils twist up so there is no sharpening involved and no special sharpener needed.

3.  While the lippies go on smooth and satiny, they have TONS of pigment and the stain lasts and lasts. In fact, if you aren’t into bold color be careful applying!

4.  They don’t dry out my lips! Awesome for matte stains.

5.  Sugar is amazing. It really makes the set even more versatile – it’s like getting 7 colors, not 4.

6.  This makes four awesome gifts if you want to break up the set – about $12 for a very large lippie that will last a long time.

Berry & Bright Lip Collection is perfect for holiday lips…really for any season. It gets a big thumbs up from me!!  If you are new to Paula’s Choice, click HERE for $10 off your first order (which also gives me a refer a friend credit!) – Lisa
