Holiday Glossybox

Several times a year Glossybox comes out with a special version that goes above and beyond their regular subscription box. This time it’s a holiday box that is absolutely fabulous and so fitting for this season. The box itself is a keepsake box that has a magnetic opening on a red velvet box. You will find so many uses for this that you’ll be begging Glossybox to make all their boxes like this.

Inside you’ll find 7 full size items and one very deluxe sample size. If you were to give this as a gift ($40 with free shipping) the recipient would squeal with delight.

CALVIN KLEIN REVEAL: this is the only sample size in the box but it’s big and wonderful. The packaging is beautiful. Reveal is described as a solar oriental that captures traces of the skin and is blended with orris and a drydown of sensual sandalwood.

Top Ten Tuesdays and glittery, glowing and glowy finds

It’s Top Ten Tuesday and these week we’re going for show!! With all those lights twinkling
inside and out for the holidays we need to be able to compete. Here are some of my favorites
for glittery, glowy and glowing products. There’s no denying that nail polish had to be a big
part of this week’s Top Ten post so I included some of my very favorites though I could have
included dozens more. I’m mostly about makeup though so I’ve shared 5 of those favorites
that will get me through this holiday season. — Marcia
1. BUTTER LONDON DOUBLE TAKE POLISH SET* in the Ice set is fabulous. There are two
polishes in the set for $24 (savings of $6) and both are terrific whether alone or together. The
blue, Bluecoat, is one of the prettiest blues around while the top coat, Leccy, is a flaky that
works with all my cool shades of polish. Yes you want it while it’s still available.
2. A ENGLAND POLISH IN SABRA is one you have to see to fall in love with. It’s not glittery
per se, but like many A England polishes, the glittery looks like it’s set in between layers of polish.
This is just one of many fabulous polishes that A England makes. It’s hard to go wrong with any
of them. I’ve been buying my A England from Llarowe now that they can’t send polishes from
the UK to the US.
3. PRETTY SERIOUS POLISH in Atomic Brain is a purple glitter that I’m crazy about. It’s a foil
multichrome polish so it glitters without glitter and changes color. I’ve bought several Pretty
Serious Polishes but Atomic Brain has a stronger pull on me than my others. It might just be
that name!
4. CULT NAILS IN SEDUCTION is one you want to buy ASAP in Cult’s sale. Once it’s gone, it’s
gone. I’m obviously drawn to purple polish and this glittery wonder is fab. I see blue, purple, a
little orange, some green and a little teal. It’s on sale now so snatch it up from Cult.
5. BOOTIE BABE POLISH in Rock Bottom* is absolutely a favorite. The bootie bottle is too cute
for words but it’s the polish that the world sees and will want. Rock Bottom is described as a
liquid copper with holo glitter; the glitter steals the show. It’s a polish that is perfect for the
holidays if you don’t want a straight gold.
6. MAKE UP FOR EVER’S MIDNIGHT GLOW eyeshadow palette* is the definition of what this
Top Ten Tuesday is all about. There’s a definite glitter and glow to these polishes. It’s a new
‘diamond finish’ texture and it’s glitter so expect fall out but this will up the glamour over the
holidays. If you like to twinkle under the crystal ball on New Year’s Eve find this limited
edition beauty.
7. PAINTED EARTH SILK RADIANCE POWDER* is sparkly without true glitter. It’s a
pressed powder that will give your face a softness with a touch of radiance. I don’t wear this
in the daytime but I love to wear it in the evening.
8. OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE COSMETICS (OCC)* has too many pigments to mention.
I reviewed two in Triptych and Datura that are the essence of this week’s chosen topic.
Triptych is golden glitter at its best while Datura is a gorgeous pink. But these two are only
the beginning. These are now carried at Sephora which will make it easier for you to shop.
Every time I’ve gone to the IMATS show in Pasadena OCC is the company that people fight
to see.
color for the times I want to glisten. It’s a taupe with that looks like Tinkerbelle came by and
dribbled a little fairy dust on it. OK maybe that was part of the dream but this is my all time
favorite Chanel product!
10. TARTE COSMETICS RARE GEM EYELASH CURLER* isn’t cosmetics but it’s got purple
rhinestones so I could NOT resist including this. You want it because it’s a great curler but also
because it’s so darn pretty.
It’s time to go see what other beauties the bloggers pick for this special Top Ten which is our
last until 2014.

Top Ten Tuesday – favorite concealers

Every other Tuesday the Top Ten bloggers share items we’d like you to know about. Concealers are something very few of us can live without. As I age it seems that there’s more to conceal. I’m not ready to give up the fight. These are concealers that I own and use all the time. Can you find 10 that you love? — Marcia

1. YSL Touche Eclat – Technically this is not a concealer, it’s a highlighter. But I find that it gives me a lift with its luminizing quality that takes people’s eyes (or my mind) away from the dark circles. Unfortunately the price keeps going up on this but one can last me for a year so the $40 that it costs is more than worth it. I buy and I try every product like this but none seem to compare.

2. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer – I’ve mentioned this concealer about 254,690 times on Beauty Info Zone. It was a miracle when I first discovered it and it remains a miracle to this day. Absolutely a favorite of mine.

3. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Corrector Concentrate* – This is the newest concealer from IT Cosmetics and it’s much more heavy duty than the original. It’s actually a “corrector” which you can use to conceal or correct.

4. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Skin Conceal* –  When I need true concealing then I pull out this OCC Concealer. It’s incredible since it comes in 12 multi-ethnic shades, is paraben free, is cruelty free and is free of all the other nasties. This $20 pot will last you forever since it’s so concentrated. I wear this in Y1 (light yellow based skintone) and in RO (palest red based skintone) though not at the same time.

5. Benefit Fake-Up – When I bought this I had some misgivings. I hadn’t had a lot of luck with Benefit but there was something about it that appealed to me. I ended up using it almost every day this past summer. The outer core is an eye balm with the inner core being the concealer. It’s moisturizing and a double duty product. I probably need more moisturizing now that it’s colder so I should start using it again.

6. Senna Highlight Concealer – As much as I love this Senna Concealer in Lite, I miss the original concealer that got me stuck on Senna – Cameo. Luckily I have some in my possession. The light peach of Cameo counteracts my dark circles. I’ve used up at least 3 of them. Lite is close but not quite peachy enough. Yet it’s a great creamy concealer.

7. Three Custom Colors aka 3CC – This is another concealer that I’ve used for quite a while though I haven’t bought it recently. It’s very creamy and doesn’t settle into my undereye creases. It also can be used as a foundation using a damp sponge and patting it on your skin. On the 3CC website it comes in 10 colors including two very dark shades which is nice for a change.

8. Tarte Smooth Operator* – Tarte’s concealer in stick form is an affordable alternative to Cle de Peau and Le Metier de Beaute in my opinion. They feel and look similar on my eyes yet Smooth Operator won’t hurt your credit card. It’s one of their more full coverage concealers. I’ve been using this so much lately that I’m worried about finishing it which means more shopping (what a hardship!).

9. Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Waterproof Concealer* – Maracuja Concealer was my first Tarte concealer love and I haven’t forgotten it, I just cheat on it at times. I had to buy a backup since I’m so close to finishing my original. I love this creamy liquid for under my eyes especially.

10.  Dior Nude Skin Perfecting Hydrating Concealer – That’s a mouthful but it does what it says. This is a revamp of their original Dior Nude Concealer and this newer one is more hydrating than it used to be. Color and texture are the same so if you loved the original, you’ll love this one more. It was recommended to me by a Nordstrom MA that I trust and she was absolutely right about it.

Well I could go on and on since I haven’t mentioned Dior Skinflash or any of my half dozen MAC Concealers but I decided not to cheat (this time). Have you used any of my Top Ten? Which concealer is your favorite? — Marcia

Biggest personal influences in 2012

soft waves

Soft waves?  No problem!

Verge One – I would say that two lines dramatically changed my daily appearance in 2012.  The first is Verge One.  Their ‘texture wands’ have completely changed the way I wear my hair.  Now pretty much every day I am curly or wavy, and I love it.  The texture wands are truly fabulous finds for which I am extremely grateful!

More lashes = love!

More lashes = love!

Novalash – the second line that dramatically changed my daily appearance in 2012 is Novalash.  I had what I thought were nicely dramatic eyelashes thanks to Latisse…and then I found Novalash.  WOW.  My lashes are huge and beautiful and easy to care for every single day.  This is a ‘get down on my knees and say THANK YOU‘ find!!

Most fun

Everything is better on a stick!

Everything is better on a stick!

Lush – Reflecting back on 2012, I remember so many awesome, entertaining products from Lush.  Seriously, everything they make is not only useful and practical, it’s also a blast.

blue

Who knew blue hair could be so fun?

HairUWear – another surprising super fun discovery for me this year were hair extensions.  I adore the ones I have tried from HairUWear, whether they are lively and funky bright colors or seriously hair-enhancing extensions.  Absolute enjoyment that reminded me I need to step outside my comfort zone to make new discoveries.

My top product picks

OCC Skin: Conceal Y series

OCC Skin: Conceal Y series

OCC Airbrush Foundation and Conceal Concealer – two of the best finds of 2012.  The foundation is a fantastic water-based foundation that works with every application technique, it looks totally natural and wears like iron.  And the concealer is nothing short of amazing – it’s the perfect concealer times twenty.

Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara

Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara

Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara – this is the best mascara I have ever found for my lower lashes.  It’s pretty amazing.

Tarte concealer top

Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Waterproof Concealer – another pick from Tarte.  This concealer is creamy long-lasting goodness that saved my eyes this fall when they were going crazy with allergies.  It’s a total winner.

My perfect tube of 3Lab Perfect BB Cream

My perfect tube of 3Lab Perfect BB Cream

CV Skinlabs bottle

CV Skinlabs – sunburns, bug bites, hives, rashes, it’s all so much easier to live through with Rescue + Relief Spray.  I have a bottle of this in my refrigerator at all times.

Skin Chemists Wrinkle Killer

Skin Chemists Wrinkle Killer

Skin Chemists Wrinkle Killer – the snake serum is far more than a marketing ploy. This stuff works. If you want less wrinkles in 2013, get yourself some Wrinkle Killer.

If 2013 is even close to as good as 2012 was, then we have a LOT to look forward to.  2012 was chock full of great discoveries, wonderful ‘old faithfuls’, tons of joy and nothing to complain about.  Life is good!  – Lisa

OCC Skin: Conceal review and swatches

OCC Skin: Conceal R series

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics has some impressive products that are worth obsessing over.  I previously reviewed the Airbrush Foundation HERE, today I have for you swatches of the foundation along with swatches of the 12 shades of the Conceal ($20) concealer.

OCC Skin: Conceal Y series

The concealer is a huge winner.  First of all, 12 shades?  That is an incredible range.  They are divided into two categories, just like the foundation – red based shades and yellow based shades.    The concealer is a cream concealer in a screw-top pot, and it applies creamy but dries down to a matte finish that does not creep into fine lines.  It has enough slip to be able to sheer out, and it has really terrific coverage.  Here are swatches:

RO, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 indirect outdoor lighting

Y0, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 indirect outdoor lighting

Y0, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 direct outdoor lighting

OCC recommends using their #003 Concealer Brush.  I like to use my fingers, the body heat helps the concealer blend beautifully and just meld into the skin.  You really don’t need a lot of this concealer, even for very dark circles.  And it has some great ingredients like Cocoa Extract, Aloe Leaf Extract and Vitamin E.  It’s one of my all time favorites.  It’s rare that I find an excellent cream concealer that works for my oily skin, and this one is a keeper.  For reference, the Airbrush Foundation swatches are below.  – Lisa

The Garden – OCC Spring/Summer 2012 collection

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nail Lacquers

One of my favorite booths at the IMATS show is the OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) one. It’s like a wonderland of color. As far as the eye can see are amazing pigments for eyes and cheeks, Lip Tars in the most delicious colors and oodles of nail polishes. You can’t help but stop at their booth, that is if you can cut through the crowds that feel the same way. While I can drool over the beautiful colors online, it’s not often I can see them up close and play with them. Unfortunately for me though IMATS is not in my plans this year and OCC is one of the reasons I’m so sad about that.

Luckily I have a few of the newest OCC products to console me but it isn’t enough. For spring/summer 2012 they’ve created a beautiful collection called The Garden. This garden is unlike any you’ve seen before. The ordinary, though beautiful, pastels you are used to are injected with triple doses of color to make them more vibrant and appealing than ever.

In The Garden there are 6 new Lip Tars, 5 new pigments AKA Loose Color Concentrate, a new glitter, and 6 stunning Nail Lacquers. They’ve updated their packaging on Lip Tars and Nail Lacquers for more precision in applying.

LOOSE COLOR CONCENTRATE ($12): pictured Triptych and Datura

The 5 new shades are Datura (opalescent pink lavender), Foxfire (silvery lime-green shimmer), Acacia (yellow with blue green duochrome), Triptych (sleek regal gold), and Mimosa (orange with strong gold shimmer). I’m sharing Datura and Triptych with you.

The first thing I noticed when swatching and then using these loose concentrates is the fine texture they have. They feel like silk and apply that way too. Each pot is 2.5 grams and comes with a shaker top that’s covered with sticky plastic. When I use a pigment I only peel off a small corner of the cover so that I won’t get spillage. I then either put the loose color in the top of the container or even better in my Minerals Mate for application.

Datura from occ.com

Datura swatched up close

Datura is an absolutely gorgeous pinky lavender that is very sheer. It gives just a glimmer of color but as you move your head you can see the opalescence it has. It’s beautiful as a soft shade alone on your eyes or as a highlighter. It can be used dry or wet but I prefer it dry. My favorite way to use Datura is to use it over another eyeshadow to soften the color and bring an iridescence to it. It also looks amazing mixed in with a lipgloss or Lip Tar. It was hard to get a picture of the beauty of this because it’s so delicate but on your eyes you’ll definitely see what I mean.

Triptych

Triptych on the other hand is intense. There’s no getting around the color on this. It’s like a day in the sun with its strong gold pigment. It’s a gorgeous shade that will especially look beautiful on someone with a tan (hopefully a faux tan ladies!!). Besides using this on your eyes, think about mixing a little with your body lotion to bring a sparkle to your arms, chest or legs. It’s summer personified.

LIP TAR ($14):

Kava Kava Lip Tar

Ophelia Lip Tar

Lip Tars are unique to Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. These one of a kind products are not for the faint of heart. I was terribly addicted to Lip Tars at one time and like a mad scientist made creations out of them that were fun but a little outré. My husband used to shake his head and wonder what I’d come up with when I’d take a little of the black (Tarred) and start mixing away. One of the most important things to remember about Lip Tars is that a little goes a long long way! Minerals Mate Mixing Tray is perfect for mixing shades and then keeping the colors ready for next time. I bought a lot of small plastic pigment jars on ebay so that when I’d mix I’d be able to take the color with me. Another way to bring those creations is to load up your covered lip brush and use that.

Kava Kava indirect light

The new Garden shades are Belladonna (ultra violet), Digitalis (pink tinged lavender), Penny Royal (roasted peach/brown), Chlorophyll (teal) and the two I have Ophelia (pure petal pink) and Kava Kava (true peach neutral). A simple, elegant formula that contains Hemp Oil, Peppermint Oil and Vitamin E, OCC Lip Tar feels as good on the lips as it looks!

I love their new packaging because it dispenses the product much more slowly and I can easily put it on my lip brush for application. While the outside doesn’t look different from my previous Lip Tars, the tip is better. Both Ophelia and Kava Kava are easy colors to wear though they are intense. The texture of a lip tar is that of a thick liquid lipstick, it’s not loose though, it’s very concentrated which is why a little bit of Lip Tar goes a long way. They go on very slick but they dry to an almost matte texture. I like to be sure my lips are well moisturized before wearing Lip Tars. Kava Kava is the easier one of the two for me to wear. I prefer a light lip color and this has the perfect depth. There’s a definite peach tone but it’s not neon looking like some of my past attempts at Lip Tars. Ophelia is a beautiful, slightly darker pink shade than Kava Kava. Both wear amazingly long on me. I’m a lip biter and I find that in spite of that I still have color long after I expect it to be gone. As you can see by my pictures, these apply lighter than they swatch.

NAIL LACQUER ($8):

OCC Arsenic

I love the new packaging on the Nail Lacquers. The bottle is so much more sleek but the quality is still the same. The 6 new shades are Kava Kava (crème beige neutral, semi opaque shimmer), Copperhead (brilliant copper glitter, semi opaque glitter), Phantasm (pastel blue metallic, opaque metallic), Chimera (pastel mint, opaque metallic), Chlorophyll (vibrant teal/green, opaque satin) and Arsenic (brilliant silver glitter, semi-opaque metallic).

Arsenic

I received Arsenic to test and it’s pretty amazing. As pretty as it is for summer, it’s going to be outstanding on New Year’s Eve. It applies beautifully because the color is so saturated. I’ve found with most OCC Nail Lacquers that you can get by with one coat if you want to and Arsenic was no different. It dried quickly though so a second coat made it look even better. OCC polishes are long lasting and don’t chip on me.

Arsenic

All OCC products are 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free. It’s a company that you feel good about buying from.

Even if your garden is already planted and shining in the June sun, you can still take advantage of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetic’s Garden with these beautiful new shades. — Marcia
