Winter must haves for face and body

Winter weather must haves

As I sit shivering I’ve gathered together the items that are in current use around my house that are helping me get through this change in weather. Even though we haven’t gone below freezing yet, my skin notices the change and wants me to amp up what I’m using. All of these are recommended and your body will thank you for using them.

Starting with the shower I’ve been using two new Softsoap* limited edition moisturizing body washes. I even started a giveaway today (link) so that you can try them yourself. Both of these are wonderfully hydrating and the scents are terrific. I’m especially crazy about ICED Kiss with its sweet peppermint fragrance but there’s no denying that FROSTED Wish is one to stock up on. The cherry fragrance is more feminine and the wash is pink so it would make a great (heavy) stocking stuffer.

After I’m out of the shower I use a fragrance free body lotion since I already have a slight lingering fragrance from my wash. The two in current rotation are Nubian Heritage Shea Butter & Aloe Body Lotion (review*) and SeabuckWonders Himalayan Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion (review*). I live out of two bathrooms so I want a great lotion in each. Usually right after my shower I’ll use the Nubian Heritage while other days if I skip a shower I’ve got the SeabuckWonders to slather on before dressing.

My feet and heels need help day and night. They get flaky and crack if I don’t take care of them. During the day I’ll use one of my body lotions on them. But at night I need something more powerful and in current use is ATOPALM Moisturizing Foot and Heel Balm which is sadly discontinued. I’ll most likely switch to the ATOPALM Intensive Moisturizing Cream. The balm I’m using isn’t greasy so it sinks in easily and it’s fragrance free which is a biggie for me.

My hands desperately need moisture. They often look dehydrated and I’m concerned about the cold weather. I recently bought Skinfix Hand Relief Cream which is helping. As you suspect it’s fragrance free and it doesn’t leave a film behind. I can instantly do what I need to do without waiting for it to dry. I’m very happy that it’s got no added fragrance, urea, soy, glutens, parabens, or phthalates. So far I don’t have to constantly reapply it either.

My lips – oh my often chapped lips. These get special treatment and I always have a balm or three with me. My latest include Dr. Pawpaw Multipurpose Soothing Balm in both natural and peach tinted and also a new one to me, Blue Lagoon Lip Balm.

Dr. Pawpaw Balm, original and tinted peach pink balm

Dr. Pawpaw needs to be reapplied fairly often which is the only problem I find with it. It’s fragrance free and the original is recommended for lips, skin, hair and beauty finishing, cuticles and nails. The tints come in a few shades and aren’t sticky so my hair doesn’t stick to my lips.

Blue Lagoon Rejuvenating Lip Balm

BLUE LAGOON REJUVENATING LIP BALM* is one special lip balm. It’s more like a treatment than the ordinary lip balm. It has a light peppermint fragrance and it’s fabulously rejuvenating. It’s unlike anything I’ve used lately and I want it on my lips all the time. It contains a patented Blue Lagoon Algae that is only found in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon sea water.  Research has proven that Blue Lagoon Algae:

  • Reverses the effects of aging on the skin
  • Reduces UV-induced degradation of collagen in the skin
  • Stimulates skin’s natural collagen production

    Blue Lagoon Iceland Lip Balm

This is the answer for me this winter. It’s already proven to be a powerhouse in how my lips look and feel. While it’s more expensive than most it’s what you need and will make the perfect stocking stuffer. How much do I like it? I bought 2 more to get me through the winter since it’s 20% off for Cyber Monday!

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter & Aloe is the perfect choice for fragrance-free bath and body

When you  are looking at Nubian Heritage products you’ll be oohing and aahing over all the amazing scents and combinations they have to offer: Coconut & Papaya, Olive Oil & Green Tea, Mango Butter – to name a few. So why is it that I’m oohing and aahing over their fragrance-free products instead?

If you know anything about me you know that fragrance just isn’t my thing. It started with severe migraines growing up and continuing on through middle age. Several things could either start a migraine or make it worse and scent was a trigger. Now I’ve gotten to the point that I just prefer fragrance-free products in my life. For other people wanting fragrance-free could be that the wonderful bath/body products don’t work with their perfume, body chemistry, or they are allergic. For some it’s that they don’t like adding the chemicals in scented products or that issues like rosacea and eczema make them especially sensitive to fragrant products. I do like some fragrances but given the choice I’m going to pick scent free.

Now after that long “all about me” introduction let me tell you about Nubian Heritage which Lisa, my blog partner, loves because she loves the fragrance (her Coconut & Papaya review). Their Shea Butter & Aloe products are my choice and will continue to grace my body.

Due to common fragrance allergies and skin issues such as rosacea, eczema and irritation, more and more consumers are wary of products with added chemicals and therefore, opting for fragrance-free products.

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter & Aloe

When looking for a body wash I want one that hydrates, cleanses, and washes cleanly away. I’ve been taking slightly cooler showers after reading the advice of a dermatologist who said that we dry out our skin by using water that’s too hot. I like getting out of the shower and not having my mirrors all steamy and my body freezing from the drastic temperature difference.

But what I really like is the feeling of cleanliness and freshness from this Shea Butter & Aloe fragrance-free Body Wash. It’s soothing, not harsh at all so I feel gently cleansed.

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter & Aloe Body Lotion

This is the star of this small collection. Both products are enriched with Organic Fair Trade Shea and Cocoa Butter to gently soften and condition your skin. They are also both formulated with Aloe Vera that naturally hydrates and with Vitamin E which is high in antioxidants.

I’ve been using this twice a day and noticing that my body isn’t flaky anymore. I can take off my pants at night and not find my body dandruff falling on the bathroom floor. It feels good whether I’m using it on damp skin after my shower or at night when I’m getting ready for bed. And it doesn’t disturb my sleep which is a giant plus.

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter & Aloe Lotion

This lotion feels so good when I apply it, especially at night after a long day. It’s refreshing and not the least bit greasy. It absorbs within a few minutes so that my jammies don’t cling to me.

Now that I’ve discovered products like Nubian Heritage I’m a much softer person. Now if they’d make this in a hand cream I’d be set but until then the lotion will continue to do double duty.

Their story:

Passionate about sharing our products and the cultures they come from, we’ve been guided by our community’s demand for wellness products that spoke to their unique needs and have drawn on the rich healing philosophies of these communities around the globe

Guided- by the legacy of ancient Nubia, the world’s first melting pot, we remix global healing traditions into modern wellness solutions. Ancient Nubia was once a center of cultural trade — a place where goods, ideas, and customs from across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean came together, influenced each other, and then spread across the ancient world. That’s the inspiration behind Nubian Heritage. We bring together traditional healing practices, cultural wisdom and indigenous ingredients, remix them and create modern natural solutions for skin and hair. This is our mission: to make cultural exchange the model for transforming the global community.

Smells so good! Nubian Heritage Coconut and Papaya body products

Nubian Heritage Coconut and Papaya body products

Smelling fantastic from head to toe thanks to products that are environmentally responsible, animal-friendly, and free of all the bad stuff like synthetics and sulfates is as easy as taking a quick trip to Whole Foods or the Vitamin Shoppe (or even just surfing the web). Your quick trip will bring you to this amazing line, Nubian Heritage. I was initially intrigued because they have a full line of Coconut & Papaya products and when it comes to coconut…well, I’m kind of easy. Actually, Nubian Heritage has 15 different collections, from Abyssinian Oil & Chia Seed to Ivorian Cocoa & Hazelnut. Their body products take care of you from head to toe, but before I tell you about those here’s a little more background on the company.

Nubian Heritage first started in Harlem 25 years ago. Richelieu Dennis and Nyema Tubman were college roommates and they wanted to make products using traditional African recipes with fair trade, organic ingredients. In fact, “they were inspired by the legacy of ancient Nubia, which was once a center of cultural trade – a place where goods, ideas, and customs from across Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean and the Middle East were exchanged and spread across the world. The street vendors brought together global healing practices, cultural wisdom and indigenous ingredients to create modern wellness solutions that were highly sought after.”

The product range available at Nubian Heritage is incredible and I am just blown away at the quality of every product I tested. Everything is wonderful, and the prices are fabulously affordable.

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Body Lotion

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Body Lotion

Coconut & Papaya Body Lotion ($13): Wow, this smells sooo good!! The Body Lotion is a light, creamy lotion packed full of great ingredients:  coconut oil, papaya extract, shea butter, aloe vera, and vitamin E. The papaya extract has papain enzymes, which act as a gentle exfoliator, making skin even smoother and softer. Skin is super hydrated and feels fabulous. The bottle is big and $13 is a great price – a little goes a long way so it’s a nice value, especially for an environmentally conscious company.

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Body Wash

Coconut & Papaya Body Wash ($13): The Body Wash smells just as delicious as the Body Lotion and I love showering up with it. It’s a very gentle cleanser but I definitely feel clean afterward, even after a grueling, sweaty workout. Ingredients include lots of hydration for skin, including coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera, and papaya.

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Deodorant

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Deodorant

Coconut & Papaya 24 Hour Deodorant ($9):  This is a glycerin/silica/cornstarch based deodorant that stands out for me because it smells so darn good. I am really crazy about this scent! The fact that it also has coconut oil and doesn’t flake or give underarms a white cast is a plus, too.

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Hand Cream

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Hand Cream

Coconut & Papaya Hand Cream ($10): The Hand Cream is much thicker than the Body Lotion, so thick it takes some effort to squeeze it out of the tube. The scent, again, is to die for…juicy papaya and deep, rich coconut. This is what you want to slather on dry elbows, scaly knees, and frayed cuticles.

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Hand & Body Scrub

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Hand & Body Scrub

Coconut & Papaya Body Cleansing Smoothie (formerly Hand & Body Scrub – $12): Nubian Heritage recently went through some repackaging and I believe they changed the name of this skin exfoliator. Ingredients include coconut oil, papaya, organic shea butter, and vanilla extract. You can use this on your body in the shower to soften rough areas or for an all-over exfoliation. I like to leave it right by the sink and use it on my hands and cuticles. My hands feel totally incredible afterward.

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Bath Bombs

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Bath Bombs

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Bath Bombs

Coconut & Papaya Bath Bombs ($15): These effervescent bath bombs really are the bomb! They are made with coconut oil and papaya extract, so like the other products in this line they subtly exfoliate and create glowy skin while also hydrating like crazy. Why not get that lovely skin treatment while relaxing in warm bath water? Aaahhhh….sounds great to me!!

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Bar Soap

Nubian Heritage Coconut & Papaya Bar Soap

Coconut & Papaya Bar Soap ($5)  This lovely big bar of soap is just wonderful – it has that great coconut and papaya scent, and the soap is full of vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. It’s exactly what you want next to the sink so you can relax for that one moment when washing your hands, transported to somewhere tropical and fabulous.

Nubian Heritage has literally hundreds of culturally authentic natural products that are free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, paraffin, gluten, propylene glycol, DEA, silicones, mineral oil, petroleum, synthetic fragrance and artificial color, and never tested on animals.  You can find them online at NubianHeritage.com or at the Vitamin Shoppe and Whole Foods and other fine retailers.  – Lisa
