Cleaning up from head to toe with Murad and Kneipp

Murad Pore Extractor Pomegranate Mask and Kneipp Sugar Body Scrub

I’ve never been to a real spa, have you? I make my own spa days though at home with all the wonderful products that are available. As a matter of fact over the weekend I cleansed from head to toe and included Murad Pore Extractor Pomegrante Mask and Kneipp Sugar Body Scrub. I felt like a million with clean hair from Keune (review upcoming) and my soft face and body.

Murad Pore Extractor Pomegranate Mask

I love when I have extra time in the mornings so that I can apply the Murad Pore Extractor Pomegranate Mask. It takes just 10 minutes and feels so comfortable once on. Once in the shower after the 10 minutes I massage it onto my skin so that I’m exfoliating with the mask too.

Murad Pore Extractor Pomegranate Mask

I’ve always said that my pores are my nemesis. As a teen I had terrible blackheads and very oily skin. As an adult I have neither but I have remnants of those days with my enlarged pores. This Murad clay mask has really helped with making my pores appear smaller.

Murad Pore Extractor Pomegranate Mask

Murad Pore Extractor Pomegranate Mask

The mask features intensive ingredients that work together to give you visible results in just one use:

  • Volcanic Clay acts as a magnet to help extract impurities and excess oil
  • Pomegranate Extract promotes glowing skin for visibly refined pores, while strengthening and rejuvenating the top layer of skin.
  • Lactic Acid polishing beads serve as an exfoliate, lifting away dirt, debris and dead skin cells that have clogged pores throughout the day.

My skin feels smoother for a few days after using this and then it’s time for me to hop in the shower and use it again! There is the teeniest fragrance. I have to stick my nose into the jar to smell anything. Being so sensitive to fragrance I can assure you if it doesn’t bother me, your’re not going to notice it at all. This is available at both Ulta and Sephora. There’s a reason it’s subtitled Pore Rescue – you’ll love it but your pores won’t.

Kneipp Sugar Body Scrub

While the jar just says Sugar Body Scrub this Kneipp delight is in actuality Almond Milk & Almond Oil Sugar Body Scrub. And it is a delight. This is a scrub I’ve been reaching for again and again. The scent of almond is one of my favorites and this has just a whiff of it. The fragrance isn’t strong or overwhelming at all.

Kneipp Almond Milk & Almond Oil Sugar Body Scrub

Kneipp calls this “Soft Skin Indulgence” as you’ll end up with the softest skin that’s conveniently moisturized at the same time. I don’t need a body lotion after using this scrub since it leaves my skin with a hint of oil to keep it soft. This body scrub even contains true ingredients of almond blossom.

Kneipp Almond Milk & Almond Oil Sugar Body Scrub

I absolutely can’t wait until my new shower is installed so that I’ll have a bench to sit on and be able to massage this onto my entire body more easily. Kneipp’s Almond Milk & Almond Oil Sugar Scrub is a very affordable luxury that is great for all 4 seasons.

Make your own spa day with Murad and Kneipp. Any products you get from them are wonderful and of course I think these two are tops.  —  Marcia

Nia24 Sun Damage Prevention, Hint Sunscreen Sprays, Murad City Skin Age Defense

Nia24 Sun Damage Prevention, Hint Sunscreen Sprays, Murad City Skin Age Defense

It’s really truly the season that you can’t go without sun protection. We talk about it all year but many of us are bundled up with our fall and winter clothes so only our faces seem to need protection. But now that it’s summer I won’t let you get away with that. You need to protect yourself everywhere and that’s what this week’s Makeup Wars is all about. You’ll learn from me and the others what our favorites are. I’m thrilled with my trio of sunscreens and hope these become choices of yours too.  —  Marcia

Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50|PA++++ Mineral Sunscreen

Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50|PA++++ Mineral Sunscreen

Starting with my face since I never go without sunscreen protection on my face! I’m currently using Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50|PA++++ Mineral Sunscreen and truly enjoying it. I started using this Murad SPF the day I received it and haven’t stopped at all. This lightweight, fragrance free sunscreen has a pearlescent look to it that leaves my skin looking dewy.

Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50|PA++++ Mineral Sunscreen

I’ve used it with half a dozen foundations and it always plays nicely. No balling up which can be a problem with other sunscreens I’ve used. This has a slightly peachy tone to it that brightens skin if you don’t want to apply foundation over it.

Prior to this I was using Supergoop but I always winced a little with the texture and smell. Not happening with Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50|PA++++ Mineral Sunscreen. It’s perfect for my skin and I’m so happy to have discovered it.

NIA24 Sun Damage Prevention Broad Spectrum SPF30 100% Mineral Sunscreen may have a very long name but that’s okay once you learn all the benefits of this one.

While I’ve used this NIA24 Sunscreen on my face I don’t use it on the days I’m applying foundation. It’s a thick white cream that I need to blend especially well so that it doesn’t appear white on my face. This one is perfect for my grandkid playdates when I’m out and about with them. Even though the SPF is 30 compared to Murad’s 50, it just feels like it’s protecting me especially well.

I love this on my arms too since they finally have become uncovered and need extra protection. I’ve developed some sunspots and feel this is really helping protect me from gaining more.

HINT SUNSCREEN SPRAY is a new product created by the people who make Hint Water. It’s so innovative and smells so delicious!

Hint Sunscreen Spray

Hint Sunscreen Spray

Hint Sunscreen Spray comes in 3 fragrances and are a delight to use. I was sent this in Pineapple and Grapefruit and as soon as these are finished I’ll be ordering the Pear. That’s how great these are. While it can be used on your face by spraying it into your hands and applying it that way, I like it on my body. And then I like to smell my arms all day long.

Hint Sunscreen Spray Pineapple

Hint Sunscreen Spray Pineapple

With broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection and easy 360° spray-on application, our hydrating, skin-quenching sunscreen is water resistant for 80 minutes. Employing Bag-on-Valve (BOV) technology, our innovative spray uses only compressed air, eliminating propellant chemicals, providing uniform coverage, and offering extra-fast drying time. Plus, it’s oxybenzone- and paraben-free—a delicious, radiant glow, delivered with only the good stuff.

Hint Sunscreen Spray Grapefruit

These are made with the essence of the fragrances. You’ll forget about that “sunscreen smell” that we often complain about. Even your kids won’t complain about the smell of Hint. The fragrance isn’t strong and it’s very true to life plus the spray isn’t sticky in the least. In my experience they haven’t attracted bugs but they do attract people.

I’m so happy to have the chance to share these with you but even more to be using them myself. All are living up to my expectations and I’m sure yours too.

Top Ten Sunscreens for 2015 – eyes, lips, body and face

Welcome to the 2015 version of favorite sunscreens. I’ve done both a Makeup Wars in 2013 on favorites and a Top Ten Tuesday in 2014. You’ll see some products that remain the same and some new ones. We can’t forget any part of our body and I didn’t want to forget children since I go through more sunscreen for them than I do for myself. — Marcia
1435625486_1115290AVEENO® Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50  A lot of Aveeno products have fragrance so when I am sent one that is fragrance free I’m over the moon. I find myself using this for my body all the time. It’s $10.99 but I often find coupons or specials for it. This has become a staple for both my husband and myself.
1435625420_serum_510x600SUPERGOOP CITY SERUM is the one I want for my face. I buy this every summer. This is fragrance free and gentle on my skin. It wears really well under foundation and provides anti-aging benefits and SPF 30.
1435625218_eyecream_510x600SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* is another product that was on last year’s list. This SPF 37 sunscreen is a great undereye protectant. The applicator makes it easy to apply and is cooling at the same time. Supergoop is really a top notch brand.
1435625098_murad-invisiblur-300x259MURAD INVISIBLUR PERFECTING SHIELD* isn’t a sunscreen per se but with SPF 30 it’s great under foundation. It gives a totally clear sunscreen protection while also blurring imperfections. There are many days I use this and not an additional SPF protect.
1435625029_algenist-tmALGENIST REPAIRING TINT RADIANCE MOISTURIZER with SPF 30* is one of the foundations that I’ve been using a lot lately. Recently a friend blogged about it and how it totally changed her skin so out it came again. I’d forgotten just how wonderful it was. It comes in 4 shades and I wear it in Light. I love getting amazing skincare benefits along with hiding my redness and sunspots.
1435624971_6062_lg_1LATHER BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 15 LIP BALM is what I discovered after I started using the Lather Tinted Lip Balms. I like the spearmint the best but it’s great to try the 3 pack with citrus, spearmint and unscented since I need lip balm in every purse or pocket.
1435624891_balmfamily_510x6001SUPERGOOP FUSION LIP BALM SPF 30 is the one I like when I’m at the pool or splashpad with my babies. Even though I try not to be in direct sunlight, they love it. This squeeze tube comes in 2 flavors (mint and acai) with mint being my fave.
1435624812_1115092 AVEENO® Baby Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50* is one of my main sunscreen for the kids. My granddaughter is 20 months old and she adores running around after her brother outside. I need sunscreen for them and this Aveeno is a pleasure to use. She doesn’t squirm when I apply it on her and it spreads easily. Bright sun or overcast days still need sunscreen and this is a great reasonably priced alternative.
1435624755_broad_spectrum_spf50_mineral_sunscreen_2015MUSTELA BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SPF 50 SUNSCREEN* is new to me and from the minute it arrived I knew it was perfect for my two little loves. This has both UVA and UVB protection in a mineral base and no fragrance.
1435624704_broad_spectrum_spf50_sun_stick.jpg.pagespeed.ce.dats3hfv_sMUSTELA BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SUNSCREEN STICK with SPF 50* is the one I let my grandson use. He loves rubbing the stick on himself and I finally have a way of applying sunscreen on him without a big struggle. Of course I sneak the Mustela lotion on the parts of his body he can’t reach. This is a win-win situation.

Murad’s Hydrate for Hope raises funds for BCA

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month you are going to be seeing a lot of articles on blogs about products that are helping out in this fight to help us. One company in particular, Murad, wants to not just concentrate on BCA but also the other cancers that affect us all. Because of that they are working with City of Hope, one of the country’s leading cancer and life-threatening disease research programs.

Murad has created a set called Hydrate for Hope. The Hydrate for Hope set locks in optimal moisture levels for 8 hours* and includes one 1.7 ounce jar of Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture, an all-purpose moisturizer that soothes and infuses skin with long-lasting hydration along with one 0.12 ounce jar of Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for eyes, a specially formulated eye moisturizer that firms and awakens the eye area. The set includes a pink polka-dot makeup bag and retails for $49.50 (a $79 value).

This is the second year that Murad has teamed up with this wonderful organization to help provide funds to help bring us a step closer to cures for these diseases. If you live near a Murad Inclusive Health Spa they are donating 10% of all sales to City of Hope too. This is just one more of the many things they will be doing.

“One in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in her lifetime. City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program conducts innovative research to provide effective interventions for women with breast and gynecological cancers, and prevention of disease among women at risk,” said Joanne Mortimer, M.D., director of City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program. “We are grateful for the funding we have received through Murad’s Hydrate for Hope program. Murad’s generous support enables us to provide a continuum of care – from research to risk assessment, prevention, treatment, education and survivorship.”

A video has been created to help us understand the importance of City of Hope and we hope you’ll watch it.

The Hydrate for Hope set will be available at Sephora.com as well as other Murad outlets. Beauty Info Zone is always happy to recommend products from Murad. This is a great value for a wonderful cause that affects us all in one way or the other.

Mad about Murad

Murad, the skincare line founded by renowned New York dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad, has long been a favorite of mine because they offer results-based products with little or no fragrance (you may recall that overly scented products to be used on the face are a particular pet peeve of mine, because of my sensitivity and allergies). I have been using various Murad products for years and have been a very satisfied customer. Recently, I tried some items in the Murad line that I am very happy with.

Beauty Info Zone’s own marvelous Marcia gave a rave to Murad Hybrids Eye Lift Illuminator, and, since I trust her judgment, I was dying to give this new product a try. It’s a lilac tinted undereye product that I apply over eye cream and under concealer. It really makes the skin under my eyes look smoother and less crepey, and the color lightens up the blue in my dark circles.  As Marcia mentioned, it comes in a click pen that does not release too much product all at once, so you’re not wasting any. You only need a teeny tiny bit, truly. I am very happy with the improved look this product gives my aging eye area.

I am also currently using 2 serums by Murad in my skin care routine. During the day, I like Active Radiance Serum ($89). This is a repair product that makes my skin look brighter and smoother upon application.

Here’s the info from the murad.com website:

“This clinically proven, environmental aging treatment protects and repairs skin with a remarkable new Vitamin C technology that delivers 50 times the free radical neutralizing power of prior generations. This unique formula provides superior all-day protection against environmental aggressors that assault skin every day. Active Radiance Serum helps to restore tone and smooth texture and is clinically proven to improve skin firmness by up to 63% in just 15 minutes.

Additional features and ingredients:

Resilient-C Complex™ maximizes collagen production and skin brightening while providing all-day free radical protection

Ectoin jump starts the cellular defense system by helping cells resist drastic environmental stresses including UV exposure and chemical aggressors

AHAs and Myrtle Extract encourage new cell growth and help boost cell vitality”

My favorite fact about this product is that it is NOT IRRITATING.  I have tried many Vitamin C-based products in the past and found them much too harsh for my sensitive skin. Active Radiance Serum feels soothing, not stinging. I let it set for a few minutes before applying my sunscreen/moisturizer on top.

My choice at night is Murad’s Sensitive Skin Soothing Serum ($49.50). It contains Hyaluronic Acid and Glycolipids to attract moisture, Chamomile and Allantoin to soothe, and Lecithin to improve skin’s barrier function. I apply this at night after cleansing and before moisturizing.  Sometimes, after a long day of cold weather outside, and heat inside, I swear I can almost hear my face give a sigh of relief after I apply it. It’s very soothing and comforting when applied, and works well with any moisturizer on top of it. If I’m having a ‘bad rosacea’ day, the Sensitive Skin Soothing serum mellows my skin right out.

Visit murad.com for more info on these and other wonderful products they offer. You can also locate the line at Sephora, ULTA and skinstore.com.

Lisa’s top 10 primers

I became obsessed with face primers several years ago.  I’ve always had strange skin, products don’t last long on me at all – I put blush on and an hour later, it’s completely gone.  For a long time I thought there was nothing I could do about it – until I found a primer that actually made my makeup (and most happily my blush)  last a whole day.  After that, my obsession began, and I have owned and used over 50 primers.  This list details my top ten primers – each one is unique, they all have their advantages, and they are all excellent.  Which primer I choose is determined by the condition of my skin that day, my skin tone, and the foundation I am going to use.

My top ten list is not in any particular order – these are my top favorites, but they are all equal in terms of play time they get.

1.  Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Primer ($42):

This is actually the primer that began my obsession.  I used this primer one day and could not believe how vibrant and fresh my makeup was 10 hours later.

The texture has slip but it doesn’t feel extremely silicone heavy.  It dries quickly to a satin finish.  It keeps your makeup on like no other.  There are some drawbacks, though – it is VERY expensive for a small amount of product – less than an ounce.  I tend to use this on special occasions only to try to make it last as long as possible.  And while I love the hygienic pump bottle, it drives me crazy that I never know how much I have left.  Regardless, I will never be without a bottle – and a back up.

2.  Lips2Kiss Face2Flaunt Fabulous Facial Primer ($29):

Now here’s a nice, large bottle of primer for a reasonable price.  I love this primer, especially with aerosol foundations like ERA.

It has a thick texture and goes on dry.  It does contain silicones, so be aware if your skin reacts to them.  I love the way it keeps makeup looking fresh for a very long time.  I just have to be careful not to use it too many days in a row because I can have skin issues with silicones if I use them too often.

3.  Hard Candy Sheer Envy Primer ($8.00):

I love how this one has an SPF of 15 – multi-taskers are always a bonus.  I definitely notice a reduction in shine with this primer, and it doesn’t dry out my skin.

This is probably the thickest primer I have in terms of consistency, it smooths on and absorbs like a dream.  It’s a dry primer so it does not take long to absorb at all.  It’s great to use with mineral makeup because it’s not the least bit wet.  It also is fabulous to use if your concealer is on the dry side – this primer makes your skin so smooth everything applies easier.  It’s amazingly affordable, and easy to find – this is sold at Walmart.

4.  Pur Minerals Correcting Primer in Neutral ($31):

This is a really great primer, especially under liquid foundations.  I find that it evens out skin tone, even though it doesn’t really have a ‘color’ to it.

It has a thin, liquid consistency, and takes a few minutes to dry down.  Once it does, your skin is extremely soft and silky, not sticky at all.  It does contain silicones, but doesn’t have that super slick feel.

5.  Pur Minerals Colour Correcting Foundation Primer in Green ($31):

This is the primer I reach for when I’m broken out – the green color balances out redness from acne, broken capillaries, and rosacea.  It doesn’t make you look like an alien – the green transforms into a beautiful, even skin tone color.

The consistency is a little thicker than the Correcting Primer in Neutral, but it’s also fantastic under liquid foundations.  Less is more with this primer – you  don’t need much to neutralize redness and create a perfect canvas for foundation.

6.  OCC Skin Primer ($20):

This is a really cool primer.  Not only is it great for the face, but you can also use it as a lid primer for mineral eyeshadows.

It’s unlike most primers.  You HAVE to shake the bottle before squeezing some out – and then be careful when you do, because it has a very liquid, thin consistency.  Once you apply it to your skin, WAIT until it dries – it applies quite wet, but does dry down to a super smooth, satiny finish.  And boy does makeup stick to this stuff!

7.  Murad Skin Perfecting Primer ($35):

Murad is probably better known for its skin care, but this line has some pretty amazing primers.  Marcia reviewed her favorite here – and my favorite is the Skin Perfecting Primer.  This primer gives a matte finish which is perfect for my oily t-zone.

This is the only tinted primer on my list (well, except for the Pur Minerals green-tinted primer).  Because of the tint, I find it works extremely well with lighter coverage foundations and tinted moisturizers.  It evens out skin tone beautifully, and truly inhibits oil production in those difficult areas like the nose, forehead, and chin.

8.  Covermark Hydrating Base ($16):

This primer was formulated to be used with heavier coverage foundations.  As such, it’s a moisturizer as well as a primer, which helps eliminate dry patches that can be accentuated with a heavier foundation.  I am fascinated by how this primer actually does moisturize as well as help makeup last longer.

The consistency is very wet, so be sure to allow for a few minutes of dry down time.  Somehow this primer kind of sinks into your pores, so the full coverage foundations don’t become little dots all over your face. And you get a huge amount for a terrific price.

9.  Paul and Joe Protective Foundation Primer ($30)

This is, by far, the strangest primer I have ever used.  And I love it.  It has an SPF of 30.  It’s also super watery – you MUST shake it before squeezing the product out.  By the way, the packaging has changed since I bought this – now it’s in what looks like a squeeze tube.

It has a very thin consistency that dries down to a satiny finish.  And, it has super fine, really tiny microshimmers in it, which give your skin the best, natural looking glow.  The primer looks really yellow, but it goes on colorless – aside from the glow.  Your makeup lasts and lasts with this primer.  I find that I reach for it when I am using very matte, oil-inhibiting foundations like Clarins Truly Matte Foundation, because the microshimmers counteract the flatness one can get from very matte foundations.

10.  Cle de Peau Gentle  Smoothing Base for Pores ($75)

I have a love-hate relationship with Cle de Peau.  Some products I adore, and will buy despite the exorbitant price tag.  Other products I can’t stand, and I get offended at the price of items that do absolutely nothing for you.  This primer, however, is well worth the price.  At the same time, I get the sample sizes at the counter when I can – what I have pictured is a sample tube, which is great for travel and gives you several weeks of use.

This primer is a thick, creamy lotion.  You don’t need a lot of it – a little goes a very long way.  In fact, if you use too much you will get a distinctly white cast to your skin.  Use the right amount and it sinks into your skin nicely, leaving no white or greyish cast.  Your skin is super smooth, lines are filled in, and makeup goes on beautifully.  It also lasts all day.  Your pores look smaller, and it lessens oil production throughout the day.  Get a sample at the counter before investing, but I’ll bet once you try it, you’ll want the full size version.  I love this under cream foundation.

Most people probably only need or want one, maybe two different primers.  I happen to be just a *little* obsessive about makeup, so my collection is extreme – but if you are looking for a primer, I am sure you can find something perfect for your needs on this list.

Ok ladies, what is your favorite primer?  Is there another amazing primer out there that I just have to try??  There’s always room for one more!  – Lisa
