Paula’s Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

I love holiday lip colors – deep pinks, berries, and plums. They are fun and just so festive! A collection I am loving that is definitely holiday perfect is the new limited edition Berry & Bright Lip Collection ($45) from Paula’s Choice.

Paula's Choice Skincare Berry and Bright Lip Collection

True confession – while I am a big Paula fan (and have been since the 1990’s, that’s how OLD I am), I’ve never liked any of her lip products. I am also not a huge fan of lip crayons…I’m more of a lip gloss lover. However…I like these, I really like these!! The four chubby lip crayons are in festive shades: Currant, a traditional medium red; Plum, a deep purple/red; Winterberry, a pink/red; and Sugar, a pink opalescent. Sugar is great alone or over the other three matte shades to lighten them up and give some depth.

So why do I love these when lip pencils aren’t really my thing?  Six reasons:

1.  These have NO scent and NO taste. What else would you expect from Paula??

2.  The chubby pencils twist up so there is no sharpening involved and no special sharpener needed.

3.  While the lippies go on smooth and satiny, they have TONS of pigment and the stain lasts and lasts. In fact, if you aren’t into bold color be careful applying!

4.  They don’t dry out my lips! Awesome for matte stains.

5.  Sugar is amazing. It really makes the set even more versatile – it’s like getting 7 colors, not 4.

6.  This makes four awesome gifts if you want to break up the set – about $12 for a very large lippie that will last a long time.

Berry & Bright Lip Collection is perfect for holiday lips…really for any season. It gets a big thumbs up from me!!  If you are new to Paula’s Choice, click HERE for $10 off your first order (which also gives me a refer a friend credit!) – Lisa

Mineral Fusion’s Holiday Lip Tints Kit

Mineral Fusion’s Holiday Lip Tints Kit

MINERAL FUSION has a great gift set whether it’s for a stocking stuffer, a gift exchange, a treat for yourself, or a cutie under the tree (or menorah). This cute set can be found at Whole Foods  for only $19.95. The great news is that it contains 3 full size Mineral Fusion Sheer Moisture Lip Tints so it’s like buying two ($9.99 each) and getting one free.  Since I absolutely love lip crayons and I love a sheer color on my lips I was thrilled when Mineral Fusion sent this my way for review.

Glisten is actually lighter than my picture shows and since it’s sheer it looks lighter on my lips.

SMOLDER:  a cherry red that’s my favorite. It’s my AHA moment because I’m normally not comfortable in red but this sheer shade makes it wearable and not as bold as I’d find a red. Plus the cherry makes it more on the cool pink side.

Let me tell you more about why you want this set! Mineral Fusion is a company that is 100% vegetarian with most products 100% Vegan. All products are free of gluten, parabens, SLS, phthalates, artificial colors and synthetic fragrances. The cruelty free blogs that I follow all love Mineral Fusion products and they are PETA and Leaping Bunny certified.

The lip crayons are made of 100% pure minerals in an ultra-hydrating formula that’s infused with cocoa butter and a lip-firming peptide. You can swipe them on without looking or you can take the time and build up the color with several layers. It’s a gluten free formula that has an easy to wear vanilla-mint flavor. I notice the scent and flavor when I first apply these but this doesn’t linger and that’s another reason I’m enjoying them so much. The colors are vibrant even though sheer. It’s hypo-allergenic and is free of any artificial colors.

Although I haven’t tried Mineral Fusion nail polish I saw these sets on Prime Beauty and want to go check to see if my Whole Foods carries them. $9.99 for three mini polishes is a great gift. Prime Beauty’s pictures and descriptions will convince you that you need these too.

Tarte part two – learn more about the new Cheek Stains and Power Pigment Lip

tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigment Lips

tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigment Lips

We are so excited to be able to share these new tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigment LipSurgences with you. When tarte sent these along both Lisa and I were thrilled with the beautiful colors. Yesterday Lisa shared her 4 choices and today I’m going to regale you with the reminder. I’m not quite sure how you as a consumer will pick from these fabulous shades.

tarte Cheek Stains

tarte Cheek Stains

tarte Power Pigments

tarte Power Pigments

Let’s talk about Cheek Stains first. The very first product that Maureen Kelly, founder of Tarte, created was a Cheek Stain which is now called Flush. Her brand took off from there. Fifteen years later tarte decided to repackage these so that each shade is special on its own.  7 of these 8 Cheek Stains are from the previous line but one new one, Blushing Bride, has been added to celebrate their being around for 15 years!

Almost all of the cheek stains are a gel formula. Just one is a cream formula, Natural Beauty. The way to tell is to look at the tops of brand new Cheek Stains, a rounded top tells you it’s a gel, a flat top tells you it’s a cream.

In addition to the Cheek Stains there is a matching powder blush and a matching Power Pigment LipSurgence. Tarte has tied in all these together to let you have your choice of the type of blush you prefer and a lip crayon that works perfectly with each one.

Tarte Cheek Stains: Blushing Bride, Exposed, Tipsy, Fearless

Blushing Bride is the newest Cheek Stain so if you already have a collection of these then this is the one for you to add. According to Tarte the shade is a rosy pink, according to Sephora it’s a plummy rose. Whichever description fits is just fine because it’s a beautiful rose that is I find to be more pink than plum. It’s creamy and it blends beautifully. By nature the Cheek Stains are a little tacky but less so than they used to be. Give it time and it dries down to the shade you’d love on your cheeks if you were a bride.

Exposed is the hardest one to capture in photographs. In real life it looks like there’s a lot of brown to it but it’s actually a nude pink that is the most natural looking (in my opinion) of all the shades. This came out originally under the name Awakening. Exposed Power Pigment for lips is the kind of color I wear all the time so this one is going to be finished the quickest.

Tarte Exposed

Tipsy is the perfect spring coral. It’s sheer so it’s not overwhelming. It’s a little darker than my other shades. The Power Pigment has been begging me for warmer weather.

Fearless is my favorite although it’s really hard to pick a favorite. But it just calls to me in its pink coral gloriness. I think it’s because it’s the easiest to wear with any eye that I’m wearing. The Power Pigment Lip brightens my lips without making me feel like my lips are screaming “this is dark”.

I know I’ve been going on forever but I n.e.e.d. to talk about the new lip crayons. Tarte still has most of their LipSurgence crayons. They make 7 that are LipSurgence Lip Tints and are a hybrid between a stain, a balm and a gloss. They have 6 shades of the LipSurgence Matte Lip Tints which are very hydrating but have a matte finish. In addition there are 2 that are called LipSurgence Hydrating Lip Creme. So they haven’t abandoned one of my all time favorite lip product, they’ve just added to them with 8 gorgeous shades.

I’m thrilled to have these in my LipSurgence collection. They still have that minty freshness and are automatic making sharpening unnecessary.

Now for the moment of truth, which of these will you be choosing to complete your makeup collection? Will it be the slightly darker shades from Part 1 or will you go with the lighter shades in Part 2? We’ll respect your choices since we had a hard time deciding ourselves. — Marcia

New tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigments, part one

tarte Cheek Stains

tarte Cheek Stains

The iconic Cheek Stains are the gel/cream blushes that first fostered tarte cosmetics amazing reputation for cutting edge, quality products. Not only does tarte have 8 new Cheek Stain ($30) shades, they also have matching Power Pigments ($24), pencil lip tints with tons of color and lots of shine. Today, I have reviews and swatches of four shades:  Blissful, Flush, Natural Beauty, and True Love. Tomorrow Marcia will have her review and swatches of the other four: Tipsy, Exposed, Fearless, and Blushing Bride.

Tarte’s Cheek Stains are gel (with one exception that’s cream) blushes that give a ‘glow from within’ look. They come in a push-up container and are usually applied straight onto the cheeks. They go on a little wet, with quite a bit of play time to blend perfectly before drying down to a lasting, natural looking flush. Not only do they look beautiful, they are also great for the skin. They have five superfruits that are full of antioxidants to fight free radicals, including maracuja, goji, açaí, acerola, and pomegranate. These superfruits have tons of Vitamin C that brightens skin and moisturizes dry areas.

tarte Power Pigments

The matching Power Pigments are extremely moisturizing and they quench dry lips while also healing them with antioxidants. In addition the color is fabulous thanks to that powerful pigment and the thinner pencil allows for a more precise application than is normally found with lip crayons. Ingredients include Vitamin E for antioxidant power; shea butter for emollience, and canauba wax for a super smooth application.

I tend to be drawn toward darker shades while Marcia prefers lighter ones, so today is all about berries and reds (well, one peach shade snuck in there!!)

Blissful

Blissful Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

Blissful swatches

Blissful swatches

Blissful is the lovely warm peach shade that snuck its way into the shades I chose to review. This is the lightest of my four today and it is a very soft, pretty peach that doesn’t lean too brown. The cheek stain is better suited to lighter skin tones, but the lippie will work for anyone who wants a warm peach without a ton of drama.

Flushed

Flush Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

Flushed swatches

Flush swatches

Flush is a sheer berry shade. This is the shade that first drew me to the tarte line so many years ago! I find this shade is very natural. It looks like you just came in from a chilly day or a quick run. I love it.

Natural

Natural Beauty Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

Natural swatches

Natural Beauty swatches

Natural Beauty is a sheer rosy red shade. This is the only cream cheek stain in the bunch, which is why it has a difference appearance – the others have a rounded top, while this one is decidedly flat. The texture is different as well. It doesn’t go on as wet and the coverage is much less sheer for the cheek stain. The Power Pigment has the same texture, shine, and staying power as the other lippies. I think this fresh, healthy-looking shade is my most favorite of them all.

tarte True Love

True Love Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

True Love swatches

True Love swatches

True Love is a sheer watermelon shade. While the Cheek Stain looks incredibly dark, it goes on quite sheer and natural looking. The Power Pigment is certainly a deeper shade and they complement one another beautifully.

These four new tarte shades are all winners in my book and they all get tons of play from me. I love the matching cheek and lip colors – all of the lip shades are deeper versions of the cheek shades, making simply perfect mates for one another. If you prefer lighter shades, be sure to stay tuned for Marcia’s review tomorrow!  – Lisa

Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks are so berry pretty

Pur Mineral Lip Gloss Sticks

Pur Mineral Lip Gloss Sticks

I’m about to review something and then tell you to buy something different. Yes, I’m crazy like that. My review is for 4 different Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks that I was sent to review. I’ve been using them so much that I forgot that I was supposed to write about them. They’ve just become part of my daily life. When I went to do a little research I found that Pur Minerals had come out with a fabulous set that includes 3 shades of these Lip Gloss Sticks plus 3 shades of eyeshadow sticks in a set called Show Off. One Lip Gloss Stick sells for $15, the set is $28. Now do you see why I’m telling you this?

Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks

Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks

Let’s go backwards a little. Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks are terrific if you like easy to use, non-sticky lip products, sheer lip color that you can build up and lips that are moisturized.

They are very lightly fragranced; I’m not one for fragrance in facial products but they don’t bother me in the least. I’m so busy feeling how much softer and conditioned my lips feel that that’s all I care about.  I will put one on when I’m sitting alone at the computer at night just because it feels so good on my lips. You don’t have to worry about sharpening these since you just wind these chubby lip gloss sticks up and you are done.

The 8 colors these come in are: Honey Pie, Coraline, Berry Pretty, Rum Raisin, Beach Bum, Daredevil, Spiked Punch and Game Day. When you hover your mouse over the color names on the order page you’ll see the Lip Gloss Stick change so you can get an idea of the color.

The Show Off Kit has totally different shades which I bet are just as pretty: Pucker (light pink), Fling (misty mauve) and Taunt (raspberry) for lips and Exposed (vanilla cream), Unveiled (gold shimmer) and Staged (toasted raisin) for eyes.

Pur Minerals Show Off

Pur Minerals Show Off set (3 eye crayons, 3 lip crayons)

I’ve been a fan of pencil type lip products for a long time. I find them to be easy to use and mess free. These are different than most of the ones I have since they are more of a lip gloss than lip stick. Even though Pur Minerals describes them as being vibrant colors, I don’t find them to be nearly as vibrant as a lipstick is. The shades I have aren’t in the kit so maybe you’ll decide to buy one or more of these instead.

Rum Raisin is the darkest of the 4 shades I have. It looks dark in the packaging but not on my lips. I was sure I wouldn’t be using this color but I was wrong. Once on it just deepens my natural lip color and looks glossy yet sheer.

Pur Minerals Rum Raisin

Berry Pretty is my favorite of the group. It is berry pretty indeed. It looks like a “my lips but better” shade on me while it emphasizes the rosiness in my lips.

Honey Pie is a nude that’s not really nude. It has a warm undertone and a natural lip color at the same time.

Pur Minerals Honey Pie

Pur Minerals Honey Pie

Coralline is just too pretty for words. When I think of the color coral I usually think of a reddish orange. Coralline is a pinkish orange, heavy on the pink side of orange. This is the one that brightens my lips the most. It’s a very happy shade that’s not dark so it’s easy for me to wear.

Whether you go for the bargain of the Show Off Kit or a single Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Stick, you should consider these for your lip wardrobe. If I had to pick just one I’d pick Berry Pretty but I’m enjoying all 4 of these shades. Pur Minerals is widely available at Ulta and websites like Ulta.com, zappos.com, kohls.com. If I got that Show Off set in my stocking, I’d definitely be showing off. Do you have any favorites? — Marcia

Neutrogena healthy look cosmetics

Neutrogena

Neutrogena

Have you heart the latest news that Julie Bowen, aka Claire Dunphy of Modern Family, has been named (again) as the face of Neutrogena? I think of Neutrogena as a clear face cosmetic company. I don’t think of smokey eyes and bright red hot lips with Neutrogena. My impression has always been of a look like Julie Bowen represents. Good choice on both their parts.

julie bowenI can just picture her wearing the products that Neutrogena sent to test out. Subtle yet clear colors that bring out your best looks. With these products you don’t see your makeup, you see your face at its best.

Neutrogena Blush & Bronzer in Natural Glow

Neutrogena Blush & Bronzer in Natural Glow

The first product I want to share is Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer. I have this in the lightest shade, #10 Natural Glow. It comes in 4 color combinations (also Posie Glow, Rosy Glow and Raisin Glow) so you should be able to find a combination that’s great for you. I couldn’t have asked for a better shade for me since everything about Natural Glow is understated and effortless. Back when I did my Top Ten bronzer post I mostly had to pick wishlist items rather than products from my collection. If I’d had this Blush & Bronzer then, I’d have had one of my choices.

Neutrogena Blush & Bronzer in Natural Glow

Natural Glow

While the blush isn’t a typical “blush” shade it works perfectly with the bronzer. Both give me warmth without turning me orange. When I am looking wan this is a great combination to use. I can add a little pink or peach blush on the apples of my cheeks and I’m set. I haven’t seen many drugstore bronzers that weren’t sparkly or fragranced which makes this is a great choice. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer retails for $11.50 but you know you’ll find it for less.

Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Sticks

Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Sticks

Neutrogena also makes my lazy girl favorite – lipstick crayons. I’m a huge fan of this kind of product since you get glossy color that’s easy to apply and hard to mess up. Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Sticks ($8.49) come in 8 shades. You can find these by number (10 to 80) which gives you an idea of the depth of color. But even better they name their shades which can be a rarity. I have #30 Sweet Watermelon, #50 Warm Caramel, and #60 Soft Raspberry.

Neutrogena Sweet Watermelon, Warm Caramel and Soft Raspberry

Neutrogena Sweet Watermelon, Warm Caramel and Soft Raspberry

All of these are easy to wear and impart a lot of moisture. According to Neutrogena after 3 days of wearing MoistureSmooth your lips would be softer and smoother. They contain fruit extracts including mango and shea butter. They have a very fruity fragrance which lasts. I’m a lip biter so these only last about 2 hours before I notice the color is gone but they are easy to reapply. And they are twist up so they are great to put in your makeup bag.

I’ve used Neutrogena Unscented Facial Cleansing Bar for years and always had confidence in the company. Now I can start exploring their cosmetics with the same confidence. What Neutrogena products are your favorite? Let me know in the comments since I’m feeling a shopping spree coming on! — Marcia
