Calling all brunettes: John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Lightening Collection is your new friend

It’s summer and there’s actually sun coming out to play. It seems like it took forever to get here but I’ve made the best of it with summer shiny hair thanks to John Frieda. They say that blondes have all the fun but if you are a brunette you too can have summer fun with the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Lightening Collection.

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Subtle Lightening Shampoo

There are three pieces to this collection but I’ve mostly been using the Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brightening Shampoo and Conditioner to bring out shine and highlights on my brown hair. I get my hair colored about every 3 to 4 weeks but with John Frieda I’ve been stretching it out longer and getting in about 5 weeks. I love saving time and money! I’m not someone who enjoys sitting for 2 hours in a salon while getting color done. I like instant gratification – or at least quick gratification.

I’ve been washing my hair with the Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Shampoo. I love how much brighter and more alive my hair looks after using this. The shampoo is a light golden caramel color that deposits color that’s lighter than my current shade. It doesn’t change the color as much as it brightens it. I usually leave the shampoo in for about 2 minutes before rinsing. This leaves my hair so shiny and it’s not drying at all.

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Subtle Lightening Shampoo

On to the Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Conditioner which is thicker and luxurious looking. That I leave on for several minutes even though directions don’t necessarily tell me to do so. But I love the softness that it provides while nourishing my hair. My hair also feels fuller after using this giving me some nice volume.

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Subtle Lightening Conditioner

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Subtle Lightening Conditioner

The sum total of these two products is a more golden shade with extra brightness but no brassiness. I wash my hair 3 times per week and the more often I use these John Frieda products in between color appointments the more golden my hair looks. If you want even more lightening then wash every day. Your hairdresser won’t like this but you certainly will.

These two products are formulated with honey and marigold flower extract which gives them a light fragrance. I notice the fragrance when I’m first blow drying but afterwards my hair just smells like freshly washed hair.

You don’t need color treated hair to try these as they work perfectly on all brunettes even those of us who need a “little” help keeping the gray at bay. At $9.99 MSRP each you’ll have months of shiny hair that makes you think that you too are a blonde having fun. —  Marcia

Spring hair trends at Meijer! L’Oreal, Pantene, and John Frieda drugstore finds

Meijer spring hair

*This is a sponsored post, all opinions my own*

Spring is so close I can almost smell it!!  I can’t wait for soft warm breezes blowing my hair, smelling the lilacs and the jasmine…oh I just can’t wait.  Both Marcia and I have been thinking a lot about replenishing and refreshing our stashes for the change of the seasons, and Meijer is the place to do it.  I am super lucky because I have a Meijer just about two miles from my house.  I prefer going there because I can get my groceries plus any other sundries all in one place.

Meijer recently sent some samples of some of their hair care they have featured for spring.  I have a few favorites that are worth considering on your next shopping trip.

L'Oreal Extraordinary Clay Hair Products

If you have teenagers in the houes, you need the L’Oreal Clay Extraordinary Clay hair products.  The clay does a great job of absorbing excess oil and dirt, rinsing clean so hair is soft and smells great.  What is unique is these products also treat dry ends at the same time.  The Extraordinary Clay Clay Mask is a pre-shampoo treatment for roots that works extra deep, giving very oily hair a fantastic lift.  And the Dry Shampoo is incredible for turning dirty, oily hair into fresh looking and fresh smelling locks.

Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner

We have a lot of guests at my house, so I keep my guest bathroom well stocked.  I always have bottles of Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner in my shower because everyone loves this stuff.  You can’t go wrong with good, basic hair care with a beautiful lather that detangles hair, leaving it soft and shiny.  Yup, everyone is happy.

L'Oreal Color Vibrancy Intensive Shampoo and Conditioner

For those of you with dry and damaged color treated hair, the L’Oreal Color Vibrancy Intensive Shampoo and Conditioner are your answer to those hair care woes.  My daughter recently got her hair tips dyed a bright red (and I instantly became the coolest mom to ever live), and this shampoo and conditioner has really helped keep the color super vibrant.  Just check this out:Red tipsred tips

They promise 60 days of color vibrancy, and my daughter is totally put the shampoo and conditioner to the test!

L'Oreal Ever Pure Hair Care

For super gentle care that colored hair loves, the L’Oreal Ever Pure Hair Care features products with no sulfates.  This is an especially good line for very dry, porous hair.  The Repair Remedy Balm rivals any deep moisturizing treatment I have ever tried, including some extremely expensive boutique brands.

L'Oreal Air Dry It hair styling products

I use a lot of heat styling tools all fall and winter, so I start taking a break from them and letting my hair air dry come spring.  In fact, in the summer I never let a curling iron or a blow dryer get close to my hair.  I think that’s how I’ve been able to keep my hair long and healthy for so many years.  I am impressed with the L’Oreal Air Dry It hair styling products that are excellent companions for those low maintenance hair days.  The Un-done Style Cream gives hair shape and body without buildup.  Add in a dollop of the Air Dry It Ruffled Body Mousse for extra curl and wave support, plus a spritz of the Air Dry It Wave Swept Spray to fight frizz, and you’ve got beautiful beachy locks with basically no effort.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray

As beautiful as they are, spring days can also be extremely humid, especially where I live in Michigan.  I can’t tell you how many days I spent forever either curling or straightening my hair, only to run from the house to my car and find it’s morphed into a head of frizz that looks like an old dandelion.  A favorite hairspray of mine is John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray, which not only hold my hair in place, it also locks out frizz for 24 hours.  All I need is 8, and it delivers!

The selection and variety of hair care products in Meijer is fantastic, and they have awesome prices for the spring season.  Be sure to stop by and stock up!  – Lisa

Love it or hate it? John Frieda Salon Shape Hot Air Brush

John Frieda Frizz Ease

John Frieda Salon Shape Hot Air Brush

*pr sample

Here at the BIZ we focus on products we love. There is enough negativity in the world as it is…if we don’t like something, we probably won’t even review it. So when I tried the John Frieda Salon Shape Hot Air Brush ($39.99) and hated it, I thought there was no way I could review this – and it was particularly ironic since since it’s one of Marcia’s favorite hair tools of all time!! Then I decided to try it out on my daughter’s hair…and guess what? Now I wouldn’t trade this baby for a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

John Frieda Frizz Ease

John Frieda Salon Shape Hot Air Brush

At first, I assumed this was basically a curling iron with a brush attached. But it’s not a curling iron, it’s a blow dryer. Use it on towel-dried hair to smooth, dry, and de-frizz hair, all the while giving it the volume and slight curl that a round brush will give you. I have very long hair – mid-back, super long layers, and while my hair is fine I have tons of it. So…if your hair is similar, this is not the drying/styling device for you. My hair is too long to wrap up in the brush, which means I have to start at the root and slowly move through my hair to the bottom…so it takes forever to dry my hair. And then, while it certainly leaves my hair smooth, it doesn’t give it much volume or curl.  For the time and the so-so results, I felt the Salon Shape Hot Air Brush just wasn’t worth it.

Then I figured I would give it a shot on my daughter Annie’s hair. She has shoulder-length fine hair with bangs and layers. Honestly it is a pain in the butt to do her hair because she is such a wimp…everything hurts her; she fights every bit of product and every stroke of the brush. When I told her I wanted to test this on her she almost cried. Then a Christmas miracle happened….she LOVED it and her hair looked the best it has ever looked!

John Frieda Frizz Ease

John Frieda Frizz Ease

The 1 1/2 inch titanium ceramic hair brush barrel is easy to maneuver and the bristles are soft enough to be comfortable, but firm enough to hold hair. It has 500 watts of power, two heat settings, and a cold air option. It dries shorter, layered hair so quickly and painlessly I could not believe it. Now my daughter is always begging me to do her hair – or doing it herself – and then spending a half hour staring at the fabulousness of her hair style.

The bottom line is, if you have long, heavy hair there are better options for you. If you have shoulder length or shorter hair, or shorter layers, you will be thrilled with the John Frieda Salon Shape Hot Air Brush. I’m so glad I gave this a second chance!  – Lisa

Free flowing waves with Philip B. and John Frieda

All my life I have been chasing the perfect wave. Not like Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in Point Break…although that is my favorite guilty pleasure movie of all time…more like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex in the City.

Not searching for this kind of wave...

Not searching for this kind of wave…

Searching for this kind of wave!

Searching for this kind of wave!

We were recently sent two products to test that together make free-flowing waves for the ultimate summer hairstyle. Move over Keanu and Patrick…John Frieda and Philip B are the dynamic duo making my awesome waves.

Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray

Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray

I start with the Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray ($22). A little sprayed onto damp roots gives a nice lift and helps hold those waves all day.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Conical by Conair

John Frieda Frizz Ease Conical by Conair

After drying hair with a paddle brush, it’s time for the John Frieda® 1 ½ Inch Frizz Ease® Conical by Conair ($39.99). I have no experience using a curling iron without a clamp, and had my doubts as I am not exactly known for my awesome hand/eye coordination. The benefit of clamplessness (is that a word??) is no danger of awkward, unnatural bends in the hair.

John Frieda Curling Iron glove

My biggest fear was burning myself, but included with the Conical Curling Iron is a very smart three-fingered glove.

John Frieda Conical Curling IronJohn Frieda Curling Iron controls

This wand has a 1 ½ inch clamp-free conical barrel with a titanium ceramic coating. The coating prevents frizz and keeps hair looking smooth. It heats up very quickly, reaching 400ºF in only 30 seconds. I wrap sections around the wand, holding them in place with my gloved fingers. It definitely makes for natural looking waves, while a curling iron with a clamp gives me a tighter curl.

After I curl each section, I go back to the Philip B. Self Adjusting Hair Spray. I have very fine hair, so non-aerosol hairspray almost never works for me. It’s just too heavy and instead of holding my curls, it typically kills them. I found that this hairspray works great as long as I remember to hold it a good 12 inches away  from my hair when I spray. This helps give it room to develop into a finer spray that won’t clump hair together or make it stiff. The ingredients include Vitamin B5 and amino acids for conditioning hair.  Each spray strengthens hold, so I use just one spray for a light hold and three for major hold.

Ok, so I’m no Carrie Bradshaw, but the waves still look pretty good! You can try finding your own perfect wave with the John Frieda® 1 ½ Inch Frizz Ease® Conical by Conair available on Amazon.com and Philip B. Self Adjusting Hair Spray on PhilipB.com.  – Lisa

John Frieda Salon Shape Hot Air brush – and a thank you

John Frieda salon Shape Hot Air brush

John Frieda salon Shape Hot Air brush

Thank you Makeup Wars! You ladies have changed my daily routine and I’m very grateful for that. Not too long ago our topic was favorite hair tools. I struggled with this personally while others knew instantly what to use for their article. Two of my Makeup Wars friends wrote about the JOHN FRIEDA HOT AIR BRUSH. My ears perked up, my eyes brightened and my credit card twitched.

First Brooke from Blushing Noir taught me the official name of the product John Frieda salon Shape Hot Air Brush. This is made by Conair so when she wrote about it she also included Conair in her title – too many words for me! She’s the one that got me started. Then Cindy from Prime Beauty sealed the deal. I know Cindy struggles with her hair so when she raved and said it’s the only hot tool she’ll use on her hair, I was a goner.

This brush sells for $39.95 and can be found at Ulta but I had no time to shop and I wanted this. I bought mine from Amazon for $29.99 and had it just 3 days later with Prime. From the first time I used it I knew it was a best buy for 2013.

I have shoulder length straight (thank you keratin) hair. It’s in great condition thanks to the wonderful products I’ve discovered because of blogging. My favorite style is to wear it straight but curled under at the bottom. I don’t want anything wild, I just want a little volume and some natural looking curl.

John Frieda hot air brush

Here are the facts:

The brush has a 1 1/2 inch barrel although I believe they also sell a 1 inch one too.

It’s 500 watts.

It has two heat settings plus a cool setting.

The barrel is titanium ceramic coated.

It has “advanced ionic conditioning”.

The cord swivels and it has enhanced air control.

john frieda settingsWhatever it has – it’s great. I am using this almost every day. I blow dry my hair much more quickly now because I can do it as messy as I want. I’m not concerned with style, I’m just concerned with getting my hair about 75-80% dry. Then I take out John Frieda and let him do his magic. I section off my hair and finish blow drying and styling with the brush. It takes me so little time and when I’m done I’m happy! That’s a change of pace. Because my hair is basically dry before I use this brush I’m not worried about breakage. I’m also able to use both hands more easily to style than if I were using my round brush and my heavier blow dryer.

It’s also great for refreshing my hair whenever I want to rather than using my flat iron. Unless I’ve slept really crazy it’s usually enough to use this on low to refresh my style. john frieda close upThis lesson in hair tools has taught me how much I’m learning from my fellow bloggers. They may cost me money but when it’s for a product I like this much I’ll be happy to let them do it over and over again. — Marcia

Going gray? Get Color Wow Root Cover Up!

Color Wow Root Cover Up

Color Wow Root Cover Up

I don’t know about you but gray hair grows in my family. It’s hard to believe isn’t it?? I’ve been hiding my grays since my early 30’s but my sister had to start even earlier. It may look distinguished on my brothers and husband but it sure doesn’t look distinguished on me. It makes me look and feel old. I love to get my hair tinted but I don’t have the time or money to do it as often as I’d like. The answer: Color Wow!! To be specific Color Wow Root Cover Up.

Color Wow Root Touch Up in Light Brown

Color Wow Root Cover Up in Light Brown

Color Wow Root Cover Up is the newest invention that helps me disguise the gray that plagues me. This root cover up is different from any I’ve tried and I’m loving it. What you’ll see when you open this is a product that looks a lot like an eyeshadow or eyebrow color. What you’ll get though is a product made specifically to cover your gray hair and keep it covered all day long. When this was sent for review purposes I was so excited to try it out.

Color Wow Root Touch Up Kit

Color Wow Root Cover Up Kit

This is a powder but one that sticks to your hair. It doesn’t come off and it doesn’t stain my hairline or my pillow cases. It comes with a brush that helps you do larger areas on one side and get to smaller areas with the other. color wow oepn 3It’s so easy to use that even a true lefty like me can do it without a problem. Here’s my before picture a few days prior to getting it professionally colored:color wow beforeMy part is not that big. The light doesn’t show you well but what you are seeing are white hair and gray hair mingled together where there should be brown hair.

Here’s my after which only took me a few minutes: color wow after1

I had no help at all. I just brushed it on my part area (and later along my hairline by my ears) and went over each area about 3 times. The powder only sticks to hair, it doesn’t stick to itself so you won’t be building up layers of it. It wasn’t sticky, it wasn’t hard to do and it didn’t take me long. My only mistake was that I couldn’t see the very top of my head so there was a small circle I missed but that was only the first time. By the second time I did this I was a pro. There is a video that shows you just how easy it is.

It does fade after a day so if you don’t wash your hair the next day then you’d need to repeat the process. You can apply this on freshly washed hair or day/s old hair. While it says it lasts from shampoo to shampoo, I usually added more the second day.color wow box2

My favorite part – it does NOT stain my scalp. I’ve used other products that have either stained my scalp or have dripped and become visible. Since this is a powder there’s no dye involved. As a matter of fact it’s a great product for pregnant women because it lacks the chemicals that dye has.

Color Wow Root Cover Up ($34.50) is available in 6 shades: Platinum, Blonde, Light Brown, Medium Brown, Dark Brown and Black. “Root Cover Up is a professional mineral powder with a unique oil-based, non-waxy formula that stays in place, creates multi-dimensional shine and looks completely natural. Each shade contains a number of colors and pigments to ensure natural blending with the tones in your own hair. Because of its extreme portability and ease of use, it’s ideal for travel and last minute, on-the-go fixes.”
You can find Color Wow Root Cover Up at Ulta.

look ma - no gray!

look ma – no gray!

Color Wow has a full line that contains other products to protect color treated hair like shampoo, conditioner, mousse and styling cream. It was created by Gail Federica and John Frieda who are responsible for so many innovative hair products.

They say this will last for 60 applications which is approximately 3 months. I’m sure this will last me longer since I’ll just need it before root touch ups. However long it lasts though, it gives my hair that Color WOW that’s needed when I’m feeling drab from those darned grays. How do you manage your gray hair? (And don’t tell me you don’t have them!!) — Marcia
