Makeup Wars with Keune Hair Care products – Keratin Smoothing Line

KEUNE Care Line Keratin Smoothing

KEUNE Care Line Keratin Smoothing

The ladies of Makeup Wars are a varied bunch in our taste and especially with our hair. We all have different styles, lengths, textures and desires when it comes to how we like our hair. KEUNE hair care has provided each of us with a haircare line that suits our taste. What you’ll see in our posts this time are the products that Keune carries so that you can find the ones that suit your needs and your life style.

I’ve had straight hair my entire life though it’s never been that glass like straight that you see in advertisements. After an illness my hair suddenly went from straight to crazy. I lost a huge volume of hair and is it regrew it came in kinky and then settled into some funny waves that went every which way. That’s when I got serious and started having Keratin treatments. I have them about every 9 months because I want to retain my youth (obviously) and have straight, easy to care for locks.

KEUNE CARE LINE KERATIN SMOOTHING is the line I chose as it’s listed under “Smooth and Manageable” which describes what I am looking for to a tee. There are 4 products in the line and are all highly recommended if you want smooth hair and could use the benefits of keratin added to the products you use.

I have to start with how much I love the packaging of the Keratin Smoothing line. Fuchsia and charcoal look stunning together and perfect in my gray, white and black bathroom!

Keune Care Line Keratin Smoothing Shampoo

Keune Care Line Keratin Smoothing Shampoo

KEUNE KERATIN SMOOTHING SHAMPOO is a very mild shampoo that cleanses without any stripping. It’s great for both color-treated hair and for chemical treated hair. There’s no fragrance to most of the line. Here’s some information from Keune about the shampoo: “The Quat Complex protects against Hair Fiber Breakage and ensures smooth wet combing. Keratin repairs and protects the hair structure. Provitamin B5 penetrates deeply into the hair shaft and regulates the moisture balance and gives shine.”

Keune Keratin Smoothing Conditioner

KEUNE KERATIN SMOOTHING CONDITIONER is a perfect day to day conditioner. It’s creamy and leaves my hair easy to comb and protects from breakage. It contains shea butter for extra conditioning and shine.

Keune Keratin Smoothing Serum

Keune Keratin Smoothing Serum

The KEUNE KERATIN SMOOTHING SERUM is where we start getting really serious! The serum is what smooths my hair and keeps it from getting frizzy. This is an amazing serum that contains active keratin and argan oil. I love this serum. I need 3 small pumps for my shoulder length hair. I rub it through then brush with my wet brush and I’m ready to go. I usually don’t have to do anything else after I messily blow dry. It keeps my hair straight throughout that process. It also protects from the heat of my dryer or my flat iron. On second day hair I’ll use one pump smooshed in my palms and run it through my hair before using a flat iron.

I have to really rave about the KEUNE KERATIN SMOOTHING TREATMENT. This makes my hair behave like nothing else. I end up with the softest and straightest hair on the days I use this. I use this just once a week though I know I could use it more often. With this treatment it’s best to apply it after shampooing and then bundle your hair up in a towel for 5 minutes. You can do that in the shower if you want while you are shaving and washing up. I typically use it without the towel though and just step out of the water stream to let it condition and repair my hair. This has what they call “Zipper Technology”. The Treatment is great to rebuild, repair and protect any damage you have with your hair. It’s wonderful if you plan to flat iron after blowdrying since it’s so protective.

Keune is a salon sold line that’s easy to locate with their salon finder. I just put in my state and it showed 2 salons close to my home and 4 others that are within reasonable distance. I just hope they carry my choice of Keratin Smoothing.

I’m thrilled that Keune chose to work with our group of Makeup War bloggers since it introduced me to a haircare line that I wouldn’t have known about but now love. Have you tried anything from Keune? — Marcia

Frizz Fighter Alert – code red

Welcome to an edition of Makeup Wars for hair. This week we’ve been assigned (by the big boss) to share our favorite frizz fighters or volume saviors. I’m a genuine frizz hater. I’ve dealt with frizz my whole life and finally have ways to control it somewhat. For the last few years I’ve had a keratin treatment and I love the results of it. But it’s all grown out and I’m debating the merits of doing it again. Even with a Brazilian Blowout though I still need styling creams and products that fight the frizz so that’s what we have here, in no particular order. — Marcia
1433713480_ecru-acacia-protein-bb-creamECRU NEW YORK is one of my favorite haircare lines and their ACACIA PROTEIN BB CREAM is one I’ve been relying on ever since I received it. This is a great cream to protect my hair from my heat styling. It keeps my hair smooth and nourished. The Protein BB Cream contains Acacia Collagen™, Hydrolyzed Silk Protein, Silk Amino Acids, Jojoba Oil and Monoi Oil.
1433713281_coolway-4-160x400COOLWAY GLOW FINISHING OIL is actually part of a duo I use along with Coolway True Smooth Spray. The spray is used first and helps protect when I’m blowdrying and it also helps with frizz. The Finishing Oil is used after to make sure that my hair stays smooth and shiny.
1433713088_oil-essentials-almond-bottle-300x267OIL ESSENTIALS in SWEET ALMOND & MACADAMIA is fabulous. This oil can be used anywhere and lately I’ve been using it on my hair to help smooth it. This spring/summer has been very humid and I need all the help I can get. Oil Essentials is helping and is smells so darn good.
1433712997_makethumbnailKEUNE KERATIN SMOOTHING SERUM is my newest acquisition and I’m totally loving this line (full review upcoming). It is so great for those of us with frizz problems. The serum is a heat protector that contains active keratin, argan oil and essential minerals.
1433712835_dermorganic-leave-in-spray-therapy-160x300DERMORGANIC LEAVE IN SPRAY THERAPY is an “old” favorite that gets a lot of use. I think the new name might be Leave In Shine Therapy but whatever the name it’s still the same product. I use this after washing my hair and my comb just glides through my hair. It helps eliminate frizz while making my hair shiny.
1433712696_ag-hair-bb-and-deflectAG HAIR BB Cream Total Benefit Hair Primer and DEFLECT Fast Dry Heat Protection Spray work together like peanut butter and jelly. You can enjoy one without the other but together they are delicious. DEFLECT Spray is to be used on wet hair to help comb through it easily and to help with frizz protection as well as heat protection. BB Cream Primer is a hair primer that helps moisturize as well as thicken your hair to protect it from the F word.
1433712441_brazilian-blowout-masqueBRAZILIAN BLOWOUT ACAI SMOOTHING SERUM and BALM are my fall backs. I’ve been using these for years and I always have one of each on hand. You don’t need to have a keratin treatment to use these, anyone who wants a great styling tool and wants smoother looking hair would love this like I do.
Thanks for reading all my choices. My vanity is loaded with haircare so I switch around a lot. Are any of these products ones you use? If not, what do you use? —  Marcia

Eliminate bad hair days with Alberto VO5 Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil

Frau mit zerzausten HaarenThere’s a reason that people often use the expression Bad Hair Day. It can mean that you are literally having a day with hair so bad that you feel drab. Or it can just describe how your day is going. VO5 wants to remedy that situation so they’ve created products to help you avoid that drab feeling. Hopefully your mood will follow.

Alberto VO5 Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil

Alberto VO5 Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil

Alberto VO5’s newest product (sent for review consideration) is their Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil. This is a triple threat and good for the whole family. First threat: use this on your body. Just spray it on after a shower or any time you are feeling dry. It absorbs quickly so it won’t be long until you can be on your way. Second threat: Use this on your wet head by spraying it onto your hair and just comb it through. Then go about styling without the need for any other product. Third threat: use it on dry hair to add shine. When I do this I spray it into the palms of my hands and then rub my hands through my hair. It helps eliminates flyaway hair, static and adds a lovely shine at the same time.

“The Shine, Glow and Go Beauty Oil is a light, natural oil blend for both hair and body. Infused with VO5’s signature 5 essential vitamins, this ultra-hydrating, fast-absorbing oil helps replenish dry hair and skin to feel soft, silky and look more radiant. Free of mineral oils, paraben and dyes.”

Alberto VO5 Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil

Alberto VO5 Shine, Glow & Go Beauty Oil

One of the great things about Shine, Glow and Go Beauty Oil is that it’s only $4.99 but one of the not so great things is that it’s so new that it’s hard to find. So far it’s not online, though it will be. But you can go to VO5’s store locator in order to find the best and closest retailer.

We aren’t done though because VO5 makes other great oils for your hair and these ARE easy to find. VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works and VO5 Hot Oil Therapy are both items you need to consider.

VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works

VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works

Alberto VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works ($5.99-$6.99) is a one minute hot oil treatment that works with the heat of your shower to help you obtain and maintain healthier hair in just one minute. It’s great for those of us you have damaged hair, over processed hair or dry hair. The box has enough for 4 treatments (or more depending on the length of your hair).

VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works

VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works

Before you shampoo but after you’ve wet your hair, pour out about 1/4 of the bottle into your hand. Massage it into your scalp and leave it on up to a minute. Don’t leave it on longer though since the beauty of it is that it works well in just a short time. Then rinse, shampoo and rinse again thoroughly. The first time you use it I’d advise not to use a conditioner. I think you’ll find your hair conditioned enough from this to be able to forego conditioner. If it’s not then you know to add it the next time, but I’ve never needed to condition after use. You can use this more than once a week but honestly, once a week really should be enough.

ingredients for Hot Oil

Another way to go is to use Alberto VO5’s Hot Oil Therapy *($4.49) which is an intense moisturizing treatment. This and the Hot Oil Shower Works have a few differences but I think the result is the same. With Hot Oil Therapy there are two treatments in capsules.

VO5 Hot Oil Therapy

VO5 Hot Oil Therapy

The capsule needs to be preheated though not for long. It’s easy to do since you just place the unopened capsule into a glass of very warm water. You can do that while brushing your teeth. Then use it in the same exact way: apply before shampoo, leave it on no more than a minute, rinse, shampoo and rinse! So easy. vo5 therapy back

My personal preference is for the Hot Oil Shower Works because I really don’t need a full capsule since my hair isn’t that long or thick. I find the Shower Works is the fastest and most economical for me personally.

Alberto VO5

Alberto VO5

Whichever you choose you really can’t go wrong. These are all reasonably priced, work in the shower, and leave you with soft, manageable hair. If you can find the Shine, Glow and Go Beauty Oil definitely grab that one up. It’s a treasure. — Marcia

October’s Ipsy subscription holds no tricks, only treats

IPSY is one of the most fun subscriptions you can buy. At $10 a month you totally get your money’s worth every single month. I’ve already used 2 of the 5 items in my box and I’ve only had it a few days. The bags seem to have a variety of items in them and they choose certain ones to put in everyone’s makeup bag.

For October the theme is Beauty Candy but I don’t know why. My package reminds me nothing of beauty candy but I still like it and feel my $10 was well spent.

My October products from IPSY

What do we have here? Hand cream, hair balm, mascara, mini lipgloss and facial wipes are the treasures that came in a quilted plastic makeup bag in a beautiful teal shade.

FIGS & ROUGE SHEA BUTTER HAND CREAM was in each bag. The scents were Mango Mandarin or Rose Berry. Mine is the Rose Berry and will end up in a package to one of our readers since I understand it’s strongly scented and I don’t do fragrance well. The reviews on this hand cream are good though so I’m sure it will be well appreciated.

Some bags included this mini Starlooks gloss in the shade Guilty Pleasure. I’m a fan of Starlooks and this pretty color is already in my purse so that when I’m finally out and about I’ll have it with me. Starlooks glosses aren’t fragranced (yea!!) and they are nicely moisturizing without being too sticky.

NYC BIG BOLD CURL MASCARA is the other cosmetic item in my bag. I haven’t used it but IPSY tells me it’s “designed with our oversized brush to provide 12X more volume and 99% more curl in one just one swipe. The Lash Expand technology delivers quick dry volume to keep lashes flexible and comfortable for all day wear.” It’s always nice to try a new mascara!

The timing of my package was great because I can finally stand using my walker and I was so ready to wash my hair in the kitchen sink (I still can’t get upstairs). It wasn’t hard to have my husband find my shampoo and conditioner since those were in the shower but it was hard to tell him what product I wanted to put in my hair after it was washed. I have a (ahem) few items on the vanity. Along came IPSY and this ECRU PROTEIN BB CREAM. I have this in the full size and I love using it, as a matter of fact it was next on my list to review before my accident. My first official home hair session used ECRU and this ACACIA BB CREAM! It’s great to control frizz and flyaways.

Last but not least is the item I used the first night this came, SKYN ICELAND GLACIAL CLEANING CLOTHS. I’ve been very reliant on cleaning cloths the last two months so I was thrilled to have this package of 10. Normally I’d save it for travel but it’s being used right now. These are foaming and even though they say you don’t need to wash them off I have used a wet wash cloth on my face after to make sure there’s no residue. There are infused with Icelandic glacial waters and beneficial natural extracts. A great find in my package.

September’s Glossybox grandly welcomes fall

September 2013 Glossybox

September 2013 Glossybox

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Glossybox in my life. I was sent the September 2013 box to test and I have to tell you that I’m very impressed. There are 4 full size items along with 1 very generous sample. I fell for this Fall subscription box when I opened it. A Glossybox subscription costs you $21 a month and this box has a value of $107. Now that’s a great investment. What’s inside though is what makes this a box worth owning.

September 2013 Glossybox - 4 out of 5 are full size

September 2013 Glossybox – 4 out of 5 are full size

Everything in this Glossybox will be used by either Lisa or myself. I don’t have that happen often. Lisa was thrilled to receive the Nioxin and the fragrance while I kept the makeup items.

A box from Glossybox for Sept. 2013

A box from Glossybox for Sept. 2013

Let’s start with the obvious:

NIOXIN Diamax Treatment

NIOXIN Diamax Treatment

NIOXIN Diamax Treatment

NIOXIN Diamax Treatment

Nioxin is the brand to go to (in my opininon) if you have thinning hair. I used it when I had hair problems due to illness and it was a lifesaver. The Nioxin Diamax Treatment is a thickening treatment. It helps strengthen you hair against breakage. This retails for $50. I give this a giant thumbs up.

Glossybox BCBGMAXAZRIA deluxe sample

Glossybox BCBGMAXAZRIA deluxe sample

BCBGMAXAZRIA: Bon Genre Eau De Parfum – this is the only sample in the box and I thought it was full sized when I opened it. The card showed me the pretty bottle that it comes in for $75. Even though I’m not a fragrance person I appreciate this size. Glossybox tells me it’s: “Seductive, mysterious, and intriguing. BCBGMAXAZRIA  Bon Genre is a statement making fragrance inspired by the effortlessly cool sensibility of the urban rocker woman.” Maybe that’s why it made Lisa so happy when I gave it to her or it might have been the combination of jasmine, sandalwood and amber. I just know that she put it on immediately and liked it the whole hour we were together. Here’s what I learned about this scent: It has opening notes of lychee and red berries, middle notes of tiger lily and jasmine noir and base notes of sandalwood and golden amber.

BE A BOMBSHELL LIQUID EYELINER IN ONYX: As a huge fan of eyeliner, especially liquid eyeliner, this was the a prize for me. I’ve used Be A Bombshell Liquid Eyeliner before so I know it’s a good one. This $14 eyeliner lasts well during the day though I do find that it fades a little on the bottom lashline. It stays perfect though on the top lashline. The tip (which I forgot to photograph) lets you do a precise thin line or is a good one for a thicker liner or cat eye.

Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler

Emite Makeup Eyelash Curler

EMITE MAKEUP EYELASH CURLER – Since I’m all about eyes owning this eyelash curler is a thrill. This is a high quality tool that sells for $30.50. It comes with an additional 4 rubber pads which is unheard of. I’ve used it now for several days and I really like it. It’s larger than my Tweezerman or Shiseido lash curlers but after day one it felt great on my eyes. I’m the type that doesn’t see things that are right in front of me so having this as an extra is two thumbs up. Here’s what Glossybox says: “Our Professional Eye Lash curler has a special curved design which angles to suit all eye shapes without touching your makeup base. Its silicone rubber pad applies the appropriate amount of pressure to curl lashes naturally. Your eye lashes will remain in perfect shape all day.”

OCEANE MAKEUP REMOVER PEN is very handy. Where it does the best job is as a spot remover or to take with you in case your makeup runs. It comes with 3 extra tips so if the one you are using gets too dirty to use, you can change it. This $5.30 tool will come in quite handy.

Here’s a tease for the October box which I believe you can still get in on:

Glossybox hint for October 2013

Glossybox hint for October 2013

The October box is done in collaboration with BYRDIE which is a lifestyle blog that was created by the founders of WHO WHAT WEAR. This should be another winner! More news: you can order the October Glossybox throughout the month of October plus I found out one great item that will be in it: Tarte Light, Camera, Flashes mascara. This full size mascara sells for $23 so that alone pays for you October box and there will be more. I’ll announce new sneak peaks as I find out about them.

I am very impressed with the September 2013 Glossybox. I think they really came through. Other than the fragrance I could use everything in the box and I learned about some new products. Good job Glossybox, with this kind of box you’ll win back some of your old customers. Are you a Glossybox subscriber? What do you think of the September box? — Marcia
