Making waves with Modern Merbabe the Boxycharm July box

Boxycharm for July 2016

Boxycharm for July 2016

I’m sure you’ve heard of Boxycharm. It’s become my favorite subscription box and the July box shows me why this has made me so happy. Let me start by telling you that a subscription is $21 a month and you’ll receive only full size items. It can be 4 or 5 each month. This month the box has a value of $120. Not a bad investment at all.

Boxycharm for July 2016

As with all subscriptions you may not have bought the items to begin with so the value of $120 may be high but not worth it to you. For me this month’s Boxycharm is a winner and one I’m very excited about.

OFRA PROFESSIONAL MAGNETIC PALETTE AND 6 EYESHADOW PANS

OFRA Magnetic Palette and eyeshadows

OFRA Magnetic Palette and eyeshadows

How could I not be excited about this? I’ve been thinking of buying a new Z palette since mine are almost filled and I’d like to organize better. Not only do I not have to do that but I got 6 gorgeous shadows that would retail for $12 each on their own. These don’t have names imprinted on them and I can’t really tell from the OFRA website but there are 3 beautiful shimmer shadows and 3 mattes. All 6 are very workable shades with the shimmers and the light yellow shade (could be Banana Highlighter Powder) my favorites. They’ve valued this set at $59 but I think they undervalued it since the shadows alone would be $60.

OFRA eyeshadows

MALLY BEAUTY is included this month too and I got lucky. Some boxes received an Ice Blue Mally Waterproof Eyeliner pencil ($18) while others got one of two Mally Rounded Blender Brushes ($15). I love brushes so having this green metallic brush is a little piece of heaven.

The brush has longer hairs than my other blending brushes so it’s a great change of pace for me. Into my brush cups this went instantly.

To add to the thrill of this box there’s a NOYAH LIP GLOSS in Malbec ($16), a wine berry shade. I remember when Noyah only had lip balms and I lovingly reviewed them. It’s great to see how far they’ve come. This is a natural lip gloss made without made without sulfates, parabens or phtalates. The packaging is adorable with an earth friendly bamboo top.

To top off the beauty in this sweet box is PYT HAIR Oil Treatment ($30). While I’ve only used it once I was amazed at the shine I suddenly had from the treatment. It’s made with Argan Oil which I already know is great for my skin or hair. It’s safe for color treated hair and it helps leave hair frizz free.

Ingredients: Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Argania spinosa kernel oil, Fragrance (Lilial, D-Limonone, Hydroxycitronellal, Lyral, Geraniol, Citronellol, Coumarin), Triticum vulgare (Wheat) germ oil, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) seed oil, Panthenol.

I’m thrilled to learn about this new brand and use it in my routine.

Even though I don’t have a clue why this month’s Boxycharm is called Modern Merbaby (other than they do say “Let’s Make Waves”) I still think it’s one of the best I’ve received from my subscription. Now I can’t wait for another month to pass so I can get my next one. Are you a subscription box fan? — Marcia

The magic of Argan oil: Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

Argan oil…it seems like it is a magic elixir that cures all ills. I’ve recently tried a few products from the Simon & Tom line in which every product features the magical Argan oil. There are a few products in particular that I think are standouts, including the Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum ($34.99). As soon as it gets colder outside I start having two issues – dry, brittle hair and dry skin, especially on my elbows and knees. Simon & Tom has Argan oil products that help with any sort of dryness issues from hair to skin.                       PR sample

Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

My hair is extremely fine and often hair oils are too heavy for me. While hair oils keep my hair from getting crunchy, they also steal all of my volume. The Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum is a beautiful glass bottle full of great hair days. I love the pump that is included – usually this type of oil doesn’t have a pump dispenser so I end up wasting a bunch pouring too much into my hand. That said, I have to be careful to only do half a pump – more than that is too much product for my type of hair. Yes, those of us with fine hair walk a fine line with hair products!

Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

Simon & Tom Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum

The Argan oil in the Moroccan Treatment Hair Serum gets rid of frizz while it gives hair major shine. It also doesn’t build up over time, which makes hair dull. The oil smells wonderful, with a sweet, nutty fragrance. Soft, shiny, frizz-free hair that smells fabulous…you can’t really ask for more than that. Simon & Tom is the line to check out for Argan oil-based products. They make my hair look great, and just wait until I tell you about their Elbow Treatment Cream that is the answer for dry, rough skin.  – Lisa

Monat Rejuvineqe Oil Intensive paves the way to beautiful hair and skin #rejuveniqe

Monat Rejuveniqe

Monat Rejuveniqe

*sample provided by iFabbo*

The best discovery I’ve made since I’ve been blogging is using oils for skin and hair. I honestly never thought I’d say that or think that. I always thought of oils as … well oily! If your hair or skin has oils how would it help to add more oil? But new technology has changed that and now the benefits of the types of oils available to us are amazing.

MONAT REJUVENIQE OIL INTENSIVE contains the best oils from around the world. It’s a combination of 11 different ingredients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, beta-carotene, omega-6 fatty acids, nutrients and amino acids;  all  beneficial for skin and hair.

Here is a list from Monat’s site to show what is in the product and why:

Abyssinian: The Key ingredient in Rejuveniqe Oil Intensive. From the crambe abyssinica plant native to central Africa, it’s a rare and unique combination of fatty acids prized for their ability to do everything from mimic the effects of silicon for unbeatable shine; lubricate the hair deep into the follicle; and protect and coat each strand.

Baobab: The renowned baobab trees have grown for centuries in the arid climates of India and Africa, and its exotic oil from the tree’s seeds are rich in antioxidant-rich palmitic acid and Vitamin F.

Buriti: The fruit of Africa’s Moriche palm – known as the Tree of Life – is one of the world’s richest sources of beta-carotene, which moisturizes and nourishes.

Camelia: Also known as tea-seed oil, it’s ultra-hydrating oil responsibly harvested from China that cleans the scalp and pampered dry stands thanks to its abundance of Vitamin E and polyphenols.

Carrot Seed: Specially sourced from the mountains of Switzerland, it’s rich in Vitamin A to condition the scalp, plus Alpha Linolenic Acid for anti-inflammatory protection.

Monoi: Selectively sourced from the warm tropics of Tahiti, it’s a restorative oil rich in Omega 3 and fatty acids to heal damage and promote growth from the root.

Meadowfoam: This oil is sourced right from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Named for its flowers’ resemblance to white foam on the ocean, meadowfoam oil is another outstanding source of Omega 9 fatty acids for shine and sheen.

Moringa: Ancient Egyptians prized Moringa Oil for its nourishing properties, thanks to antioxidants and Vitamin E, which help combat skin fatigue, plus clean and purify the scalp.

Rejuvineqe Oil

Rejuvineqe Oil

Now that you know the essentials, let’s talk about this magnificent product. There are many ways you can use this oil. You can use it as a prewash hair treatment. Put it in your hair prior to washing and leave it in for a minute or so before you step in the shower. Another way is to use it as a styling treatment on your wet hair to help smooth and protect before you use your blowdryer. You can also use it on your dry hair to smooth and protect. It’s great for the ends of your hair if you use a small amount.

Rejuvineqe

Rejuvineqe

Rejuvineqe Oil Intensive by Monat isn’t just meant for hair; it’s also a treat for face and nails. It’s an intensive oil so a little drop will do you.

Rejuvineqe Oil Intensive top

I love the packaging of it. It’s sealed well so air can’t get through to it. Unscrew the top, press the button and the vial fills with the oil. Then press the button again to get out the amount you want. A bonus for me is the wonderful citrus fragrance. Plus it’s a cruelty free brand that uses no parabens, salt, sulfates, artificial color, PEG or chemical fragrance. If you use a keratin product to straighten your hair then you really need to appreciate that it doesn’t use salt or sulfates.

This is an expensive treat at $99 but a little goes a long way. I’m careful to use every drop of it so I rub it into my hands after I use it on my hair. This elegant oil is one to put on your list of items you need in your life. — Marcia

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo Oil Treatment

I remember when I was a kid green hair was a common problem. Hair got bleached out by the sun and then swimming in lakes and pools slowly turned locks a freakish-looking green by the end of August. We had no clue how to prevent this…and when I got older I experienced similar summer issues with color fading and dryness. Leonor Greyl sent the BIZ the perfect answer for all summer hair protection issues:  Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo Oil Treatment ($57).

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo is a blend of different oils that is applied to dry hair. It can be a simple pre-shampoo treatment or it can be used as a protectant before swimming, surfing, or going into the sun. The oil is a combination of refined copra oil that comes from cold-pressed coconut kernels, and mongono oil, which is extracted from the nuts of an African tree found in the Kalahari Desert.

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo

The oil has a wonderfully light, clean scent. It’s very easy to apply, just pour some oil into hands and smooth through hair. Then, go out and swim/sun/scuba to your hearts content and hair is protected from all the chlorine, salt, and UVA/B rays. The oil won’t just dissolve off when you dive into the pool or ocean as it protects hair from water to a temperature of 77 degrees. So in those cooler waters, the oil stays on beautifully. Later, just rinse out before shampooing. This PreShampoo oil is a must-have if you are a big outdoors person!

It’s also a must-have for those with colored, bleached, straightened, or dry hair. Putting this on for ten minutes before shampooing softens and detangles hair. It’s a beautiful treatment and some nights I put it on before bed for a great head of hair the next day.

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo is a cult classic and for good reason. If you have never tried this elegant haircare line before, I would recommend starting with this truly amazing product.  – Lisa

Soft and smooth hair with Organix Penetrating Oils

I know, I know, putting oil into freshly washed hair seems counter intuitive…but it’s a wonderful thing when you use Organix Penetrating Oils ($8).

Organix Penetrating Oils

Organix Penetrating Oils

Organix sent the BIZ two of the Penetrating Oils (previously called Dry Styling Oils); I tried both the Hydrating Macadamia Oil and the Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Oil.  In general, both make hair extremely soft and frizz-free.  The keratin in the oils strengthens hair and make it wonderfully shiny.  Either one works for any type of hair from super dry to super oily. organix awapuhi penetrating oil

The top photo is the new packaging – my samples are in the older packaging.  New face, same product!  The Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Oil smells wonderful.  This is the one to choose if you use a lot of heated styling tools on your hair.   Just apply about a nickel size of oil to towel dried hair then style as usual.

The Hydrating Macadamia Penetrating Oil is the one to choose if you have very dry ends or overly processed hair.  It really puts moisture back in without weighing down fine hair.  It is also terrific on dry hair.  Just a few drops  smooths my hair like crazy.

I am completely sold on the Penetrating Oils.  My hair is very, very happy when I use them!

And speaking of dry oils…be sure to also check out the Moroccan Argan Oil Dry Body Oil ($6).  I use dry body oil every morning after I shower, and this is one of my favorites.

You and your hair need Darshana Natural Indian Hair Oil

One of the best things about blogging is the opportunity to venture away from comfort zones and try products that would not normally even come near one’s personal radar. Lisa and Marcia recently tested Darshana Hair Oil ($38), an Indian hair treatment oil that was a novel experience for both.

Darshana Hair OIl

Darshana Hair OIl

Darshana Natural Hair Oil is the creation of a husband and wife team, Darius and Shana. They are of Indian descent so they grew up knowing about the wonders of the oils from India that kept women’s hair looking so shiny and healthy. One day Darius realized that a product like this wasn’t readily available and realized he needed to make this available in the US.

Shana's Before & After

Shana’s Before & After

Darshana Hair Oil is made up of natural Ayurvedic Oils (see the list of benefits below). It is a totally natural product that contains no silicone, parabens, sulfates, mineral oil. To make it even better, it’s cruelty free. This costs $38 for the bottle and depending on your usage should last you for months.

Lisa’s Side:  I love this hair oil. It is unlike any other hair oil I have tried. Most treatments are styling oils that you put on clean, damp hair before drying and styling. Darshana Natural Indian Hair Oil is applied to dry hair then left on for at least a half an hour. Then it’s rinsed out as you shampoo and condition your hair. I was skeptical that it would make a difference…after all, I am washing it out of my hair!! But it really does make hair unbelievably soft and smooth. The Ayurvedic hair oil has ingredients like Antioxidants, Omega 3-6-9, and Vitamins A-B-C-E that penetrate the hair shaft, noticeably  – and impressively! – repairing damage.

nothing but good stuff inside

nothing but good stuff inside

I apply this to dry hair about an hour before shampooing. I section out my hair then smooth it on from root to end. When all my hair is coated, I massage some into my scalp. Then I clip my hair up and wait…usually spending that hour shopping on the Internet! This is not a treatment you can slap on then go out into public because your hair looks like an oil slick. If you want to use it as a night treatment, I would recommend using a shower cap or wrapping your hair in a towel so the oil doesn’t transfer to your sheets. But it doesn’t feel greasy and the scent is a pleasant, slight citrus that doesn’t linger. Shampooing it out is super easy and the results are simply astounding. Take a trip out of that comfort zone and give this a try!

Darshana Natural Indian Hair Oil

Darshana Natural Indian Hair Oil

Marcia’s Side: Lisa and I have used DARSHANA a little differently. Besides using it as an overnight treatment or a daily treatment, I use it as I would any other styling product just after I wash my hair or on second day hair. I have to use the teeniest amount or my hair will become greasy but if I’m very careful with that amount I can run it through my hair and then comb through. I blow dry as usual and end up with hair to be envied.

My hair after a night of Darshana

My hair after a night of Darshana

Darshana leaves my hair beautifully hydrated and silky smooth. My hair is currently growing out a keratin treatment and I’m very cautious with what I put on it. Darshana has only improved it and helped me keep my hair straight and frizz free. I do have two warnings though – use a tiny amount (pour some back in the bottle if you aren’t sure) and wash by the third day or it might start looking a little greasy.

As far as the fragrance goes – I’m a total fragrance phobe and I love it. It’s a very light citrus scent that is gone before you know it. Any fears I had about this oil flew out the window with the very first use.
