Makeup Wars is all about hair – Living Proof and Brazilian Blowout Acai are my choices

We are a confusing bunch around here. Last week for Top Ten Beauty we talked about hair and this week for Makeup Wars we are also talking about hair. I’m actually glad because I mixed them up and now I get to add more hair products that I use all the time.

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

First thing to know about me is that I get my hair professionally straightened. I recently had another Brazilian Blowout procedure done, at least my 6th one. At the present time I’m only using the Acai line made by Brazilian Blowout but that will change in about a month. Prior to that I was using Pai-Shau and Living Proof. There are two things that you need to make sure are absent from your hair products whenever you have it straightened: they must be sulfate-free and have no sodium chloride. The sodium pulls the straightening out of your hair so that it doesn’t last. I watch for that in all products I use but especially during the first 6 weeks after a treatment.

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products are specially formulated for a keratin treatment. They are the aftercare regimen developed to extend the life of your Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatment. Even if you have another brand of treatment done, I’d still recommend these products since they do the job they are formulated to do: keep your hair straight, frizz free, smooth and silky looking.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are products I’d use 365 days a year. I find they keep my hair from drying out. My hair retains moisture because they contain smoothing proteins that fortify and seal the cuticle.

The conditioner provides UVA/UVB protection and is safe for color-treated hair. This is a mild everyday conditioner that glides through my hair.

All the Brazilian Blowout Acai products have a light citrus fragrance that doesn’t linger but I’d love it if it did since it’s so pleasant.

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

The Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque is to be used approximately once a week. My hair is shorter now than when I first started having my hair straightened so I find I only need this about every 10 days. My hairdresser swears by the Deep Conditioning Masque and uses it instead of the conditioner. She has beautiful thick hair that always looks lustrous and healthy. This masque not only smoothes and conditions, it promotes shine while also infusing moisture in your hair. The masque is what’s going to help with the longevity of a keratin treatment.

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Brazilian Blowout has created several products to help style your hair. My favorite of these is the Acai Daily Smoothing Serum. I always have to put in a styling product before I brush through my wet hair and this one is great. It’s clear and not too thick, has that luscious citrus scent, and helps detangle my wet hair. This is what keeps my hair looking shiny and fights the humidity.

I’ve repurchased these products over and over. I use Amazon since I save a bundle over what my hair salon sells it for. My Deep Conditioning Masque is the newest of my replacement products so it has the new packaging.

Living Proof No Frizz

Living Proof No Frizz

Another brand that I’m crazy about is Living Proof. I use the FRIZZ line which is the No Frizz line. Sephora had several samples available of Living Proof so I took advantage of those to see what I thought of the line. Once I got the samples of No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, I was sold. Living Proof is available at Ulta, Sephora and Amazon but I find that the prices on Amazon are much better so that’s where my replacements will come from. And I will replace these products since they’ve giving me living proof that they work well.

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Living Proof No Frizz information

Living Proof No Frizz information

Both Living Proof FRIZZ shampoo and conditioner sold me when I saw that they were color safe, sulfate-free, and contained no heavy silicones or oils. I can add an oil I like when styling but that’s my choice. The first new anti-frizz technology in over 30 years, it does what silicones can’t; eliminate frizz by blocking humidity-without weighing hair down.” This shampoo’s key ingredient is PolyfluoroEster which creates an invisible shield on the hair to lock in moisture-proof smoothness and repel dirt and oil, so you can go longer between washes to break the frizz and damage cycle.

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

I chose to buy Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream as the product to use after washing my hair. I always need something to comb through so I’ll be tangle free. While it’s more expensive than their Frizz Leave In Conditioner, it has more benefits.

No Frizz derives performance from Living Proof’s “miracle molecule,” PolyfluoroEster, to create a weightless shield on hair that blocks humidity absorption, smooths the cuticle, and repels dirt. The PolyfluoroEster shield is established over the first five uses of the No Frizz regimen, so it becomes stronger, the longer you use it—and can be maintained with consistent use of No Frizz products.

That’s the reason I chose the Nourishing Styling Cream. I need so little that it doesn’t matter that it’s a little more money. Plus it really works. In the winter when I knew I was coming towards the end of my treatment, this is what kept my hair from misbehaving.

In the future I’ll be exploring more from Living Proof. I actually have a travel set of A Perfect Day that I will break into in the future. Until then I plan to continue my FRIZZ routine.

CHI Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque review and giveaway

CHI Rejuvenation Masque

CHI Rejuvenation Masque

I always thought of the brand CHI as a hair tool company. I remember drooling over their flat irons when I worked at ULTA and debating which one to buy when they had an employee discount day. That CHI flat iron lasted a long time and is still floating around the family. Now I’ve learned that CHI has a lot of haircare items and one line that looks interesting to me is their CHI ARGAN OIL line.

CHI Argan Oil products

CHI Argan Oil products

I was sent the Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque to test out and happily they sent an extra for me to share with one of you. While the Argan Oil line is one with 4 parts to it, I was most interested in this hair masque to see how it could help my locks.

CHI Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque

CHI Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque

This is a thick masque and I personally don’t need a lot when I use it. My hair is thin and shoulder length so one mounding quarter size is enough for me. I find it adds on maybe 1-2 minutes in the shower at most. After I wash my hair I’ll use the Chi Rejuvenating Masque as my conditioner. I leave it on about 3 minutes though you can leave it on longer and do shower things like shaving or exfoliating. Once I wash it out my hair is super soft. I don’t find that I need anything on my hair to comb it since it falls smoothly into place. Two drops of a hair oil protects my hair from blow drying and hot tools. CHI has one in this line, Argan Oil Plus Moringa Oil that adds to the efficacy of the masque and adds an SPF factor along with antioxidants.

CHI Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque

CHI Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque

What the masque does is give hair nourishment and repairs it with the essential vitamins and antioxidants they use in the formula. It helps smooth frizz while restoring shine and the appearance of your hair’s appearance. This has a fragrance to it and I do notice it on the day I first use it. But it fades away. I’ll use Chi’s Rejuvenating Masque about every 10-14 days though it’s recommended for use once a week. I don’t find I need a mask more than every other week though.

This is sold wherever CHI products are available, a lot of salons carry the line, Ulta, and Loxabeauty.com.

Top Ten Tuesday – Hair Masks, Conditioners and Treatments

TOP TEN TUESDAY is addressing hair this week. We’ve chosen hair masks as our topic but that extends (in my world) to conditioners and treatments for my hair. As bloggers we have more of these products than most people I’m sure, hopefully you’ll find some products that you will love having in your life. With winter peeking its ugly head, we all need more care for our hair. Enjoy — Marcia
1.  PRETTY LITTLE ELIXIR – This is my favorite of all my hair masks. It was created by both Phyrra (of Phyrra.net) and Future Derm. It takes longer than most of the other masks but it’s so worth it. This is the only hair mask that I use a shower cap with and it makes my hair as soft as a puppy.
2. BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT ACAI DEEP CONDITIONING MASQUE – I get a Brazilian Blowout or other keratin straightening treatment about every 7 months. No matter what treatment I have done I always turn to this Acai Masque. I think this whole Acai line is terrific and keep buying it. This masque is especially good to use once a week for the first month or two after a straightening treatment since it helps extend it.
3.  ECRU NEW YORK ACACIA PROTEIN MASQUE – I recently reviewed the ECRU New York Acacia shampoo and conditioner which I love. The masque is terrific, to be used with or without the other products. It’s highly recommended especially for color treated hair.
4.  BRIOGEO DON’T DESPAIR, REPAIR DEEP CONDITIONING MASK – This is one of Lisa’s favorite masks. I’ve tried a sample which was enough to make me include this rich, great smelling hair mask on my list. The ingredients are wonderful for your hair.
5. MONAT REJUVENIQE – Full review to come on this amazing hair oil that can also be used on your skin. Rejuveniqe helps with so many things like shininess, hair repair, and volume. Plus there are no silicones.
6. ROUX LEAVE IN TREATMENTS – There are 4 different kinds of Leave In Treatments from Roux and all are wonderful. My favorite changes from time to time but right now it’s the Extra Moisture one. These are leave ins so I don’t have to put anything more in my hair before I style it.
7.  KERASTASE CHROMA RICHE MASK – If you want an extra rich mask, this is the one to get. This is a very thick formula that you leave in for 5-10 minutes and then wash out. The fragrance is strong so I don’t use it often but if my hair looks damaged I do reach for this one.
8.  NELSON J ARGAN OIL MOISTURE HEALING MASK – I haven’t used this but I’ve certainly heard my blog partner Lisa rave about it enough. She is crazy about this hair mask so it’s definitely worth a look at.
9.  AG HAIR RECONSTRUCT ANTI-BREAKAGE MASK – I’ve enjoyed using all the AG Hair products that I’ve tried. This mask is great for hair like mine that does break and shed easily.  It’s great for using as a short term conditioner that you rinse out quickly or a longer time mask.
10.  DARSHANA NATURAL INDIAN HAIR OIL – This miraculous oil leaves hair as beautiful and shiny as a movie star’s. The creators of this treatment used only natural ingredients (natural Ayurvedic Oils) and left out silicone, parabens, sulfates, mineral oil making this a cruelty free product. If you want shine, Darshana is the way to go.

At first I didn’t know if I could come up with 10 but I realize now that I’m lucky enough to have found 10 with others on my almost list. Have you a favorite hair mask or treatment?

Kerastase Chroma Riche is my idea of luxurious hair care

Kerastase Chroma Riche line (kerastase.com)

Kerastase Chroma Riche line (kerastase.com)

Each Kerastase Hair Regimen has a three product system. First there’s Cleanse, next there’s Treat and last is Prime. Together they provide hair that is luxurious, shiny and protected. There are 10 systems depending on your hair type or what you are most looking for.

I’ve been using the Chroma Reflection line for Color Treated and Highlighted Hair and I have to tell you I feel totally spoiled by it. We were sent Bain Chroma Riche shampoo and Chroma Riche Treatment to test out. It’s like going to a spa to be pampered when I use this.

CLEANSE:

Kerastase Bain Chroma Riche shampoo

Kerastase Bain Chroma Riche shampoo

For the REFLECTION line the shampoo is Bain Chroma Riche. It’s a perfect choice now that the sun is shining again. It contains a UV filter and properties to help color-treated hair fade resistant. Bain Chroma Riche has amazing lather but it doesn’t strip hair of color.

Kerastase Bain Chroma Rich

Kerastase Bain Chroma Rich

I use a hair system for at least 3 weeks since that’s how long I wait between getting my roots done. I did not notice fading during that time. Nothing is really going to keep my roots from growing out but if my color stays rich (or riche) that’s all I care about.

TREAT:

Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque

Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque

There isn’t a typical conditioner with the Chroma line, instead there’s a Chroma Riche Masque. The masque can be used as a conditioner though if you want. I found that out by not reading directions and used it a few times as a conditioner in my shower. My hair was soft and shiny. I later read that it’s actually a masque.

Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque

Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque

The directions are to apply this to clean towel-dried hair, massage through and then wait 5-10 minutes and rinse thoroughly. I’ve done it both ways and my hair was extremely soft especially when I used it as a masque. But on days I don’t have waiting time, I just apply it while I’m still showering and wait to rinse it out when I’m all girlified.

Chroma Riche masque

Chroma Riche masque

The Chroma Riche masque is especially good for UV protection. Kerastase says it reduces fading by 33-50% and that it maximizes longevity and radiance of hair color with reflective shine.

PRIME:

Kerastase Thermique

Kerastase Thermique

Kerastase Thermique is the only product that I didn’t try. It’s the leave in treatment that adds heat protection. If it’s like the other products, it’s got to be great.

There are two things about the line that might not make it for everyone. First the fragrance is on the stronger side. I know I’m very picky about fragrance and others may not notice it, but I do notice it for a few hours and then it becomes part of me. The second is that these aren’t inexpensive. Bain Chroma Riche shampoo is $39 for 250 ML or $18 for 80 ML. Chroma Riche Masque is $62.50 for 250 ML or $18.50 for 75 ML. In my pre-blogging life I used the Oleo Relax system and it was worth every penny to have hair that was more manageable, less frizzy (which is why I started using it) and super shiny. I still feel that way about Kerastase. It’s affordable luxury that you should consider. — Marcia

Envix Hair Masque

Envix Hair Masque

Envix Hair Masque

Now that Labor Day has come and gone it’s time to start getting rid of the ravishes of summer. One of the easiest and most noticeable ways is to refresh your hair. You’ve willingly or unwillingly put it through a lot the last few months. The sun takes a toll on our hair even if we don’t sit outside soaking up rays. Color fades more easily, hair can be drier and if you are a swimmer then chlorine has really done a number on your hair. We remember to use a facial mask but do we always remember to use a hair mask?

Envix Hair Masque is a very nourishing mask to consider. It’s part of the Envix 20-in-1 Premium Line and is made to give back to your hair what’s been taken away. I know I focused on weather but we also do a lot of damage with the heat products we use. We blow dry, we flat iron, we curl with various hot tools and never listen to our hair’s complaints. Then one day we look and see dull hair that’s just not as soft and vibrant as we want.

Envix Hair Masque directions

Envix Hair Masque directions

Envix is a 3 minute miracle for me. When this was sent for review I wondered if I needed it since I do have other hair masks that I like. I soon learned though that this is a great addition to my collection. I wash my hair and apply this mask about once every other week. I don’t need to use it more often than that. I go about my shower and 3 minutes later wash it out. I can instantly feel that my hair is moisturized and silky. On the days I use this I don’t seem to need anything other than drying my hair. I don’t put in my serums or balms to keep away the frizz since my hair is so soft from Envix.

inside Envix Hair Masque

inside Envix Hair Masque

Envix is loaded with Proteins, Amino Acids, Vitamins and Natural Actives. I really mean loaded too. At the end is a list of what these ingredients are and what they do. Basically though, it’s all about making your hair stronger and more hydrated plus shiny and healthy. While Envix is a professional product made by Brazilian Supplements it can easily be found online and in many beauty salons.

Envix Hair Masque with its 20-IN-1 Multi Action is $27 for a 12 fl oz jar that’s going to last me forever. I use about a quarter’s worth on my shoulder length hair  and after using this half a dozen times I’ve barely made a dent in it. It’s very thick and has a sweet smell to it that I can’t quite figure out yet it’s very pleasant and never annoys me. It’s time to give your hair some tender loving care and Envix is a great way to do that. — Marcia

Makeup Wars goes to the SPA

This is going to be an especially interesting Makeup Wars for me since I’ve never been to a spa. I’ve seen them in movies and on TV but I’ve never had the experience. Therefore I’m explaining what I like to do on days I consider “spa” days. Ones that relax me and help me do some beauty treatments I wouldn’t normally do. Some of these products were sent for review purposes* and each are used with love.

First off I’d start with a shower. My hot water doesn’t last especially long so this is going to be a two step shower. I’ll wash my hair with DermOrganic Argan Hydrating Shampoo* and follow that with DermOrganic Intense Hair Masque*. I love how DermOrganic’s products leave my hair so shiny and silky. The Hair Masque adds in much needed moisture. I’ll then put on my trusty polka-dot shower cap to let it all soak in.

DermOrganic line

DermOrganic line

Next is my body and I’d use Argan Magic’s Zesty Orange Body Scrub*. I’m amazed I still have some of this left but I have been savoring it. I love the smell and feel of this since it’s not gritty plus it has Argan Oil in it and my winter skin needs this added moisture.

Argan Magic Zesty Orange Body Scrub

Argan Magic Zesty Orange Body Scrub

I wish I still had the Argan Magic Bloomin’ Body Wash but that’s long gone. I’ll use a muslin cloth to get off all of the scrub and then I’ll hop out of the shower to work on my face and let my hot water refresh itself. I’m going to put on my BrokeDown Bath Wrap that was in my February PopSugar Must Have Box.

Broke Down body towel

I’m going to do a facial mask next and the one I’m picking is from Somme Institute* and it’s called Boost. This is one of my favorite masks. It’s a self-warming mask and works wonders in under 10 minutes. It doesn’t harden and make my face tight so it’s great using prior to makeup.

I’d also do an eye mask like the one by Biobliss*. A full review of this is coming up soon so you can see how great this is. I did it last week along with several other things already in this review to prepare to write. My eyes were thanking me for days.

After removal of the Biobliss I’m back in the shower and will finally shave my legs. I’m lucky that I don’t have to shave my legs often but when I do I almost always reach for Shave With Benefits*. This gentle shaving foam protects my legs from cuts and in addition acts as a body wash. It’s gentle enough for face and body as well as shaving. Off comes the shower cap and my hair gets totally rinsed out.

Three steps left that are all moisturizing. First I’m slathering up my body with Aveeno Positively Nourishing Energizing Body Lotion*. My favorite scent in this is Pomegranate+Grapefruit. I was sent my first one as an Aveeno Ambassador but have since bought this as it’s a scent I enjoy and that doesn’t overpower me.

Next I’m using Miracle Foot Repair. I share this with my husband actually since we both have very dry feet and find this to take care of the cracks and discomfort we often feel. For spa time I’m going to definitely put socks on so it will sink in.

Miracle Foot Repair

For my final act I’ll use Hand Perfection’s Anti-Aging Hand Care System*, specifically the Nourishing Day Cream SPF 15. This is another upcoming review. Not only does this system have the Nourishing Day Cream but it also contains Rejuvenating Night Cream and a Nail and Cuticle Treatment Pen. It’s a wonderful system plus there’s no fragrance to the creams so I love it all the more.

All of these products, whether sent for a possible review or purchased myself, are keepers and belong in my Spa day and just about any day. What’s in the February Birchbox box? Let’s see

Birchbox for February 2013

Birchbox for February 2013

feb 13 birchbox cardEach month that I open my Birchbox I wonder if it’s worth the $10 I pay for it. It’s the least expensive of all the subscription boxes that I buy but I have to remind myself often that they only send samples. The boxes that you’ll see are different from person to person. What I notice is that people who’ve subscribed for less time than I have sometimes get the items a month or two after I receive them in my box. February’s box is called Red Carpet Ready since it was the month of award shows galore. With my particular box I guess I’ll be red carpet ready by having shiny moisturized hair, brightened skin, a soft tint to even my collection and a crimson manicure.

Here’s what February had to offer

While I haven’t tried these I definitely will in a few months when my Brazilian Blowout has grown out more. Kerastase is a wonderful brand that I used to use exclusively so this will be good to try. Chroma Riche has a built-in UV filter that helps keep color from fading. A full size jar is $61.
