Top Ten Tuesday – time for Red Lips

top ten tuesday

It’s said that there’s a red lipstick that’s made for everyone. Some of us rock red lips, some of us fear red lips, but we can’t deny that the color red is a striking color that will get attention. I’ve gone through the archives of Beauty Info Zone and found 10 red lipsticks and glosses that I think are gorgeous. You’ll notice that most of my choices are cool toned and some are reds that verge on the edge of pink. That’s my comfort zone even though you won’t find me wearing red lips that often. I hope you can find a red that you like out of my choices for Top Ten Tuesday. — Marcia

These are not in any particular order, I’m describing them clockwise from the upper left corner.

1. Makeup Geek Lipstick in Fearless – This particular lipstick was part of a set that’s no longer on the Makeup Geek site although the shade Captivating is one that is close yet a little more orange. Makeup Geek prices her products so competitively that you can’t help but be attracted to this cruelty free independent brand.

2. Starlooks Lipstick in Masquerade – Masquerade was part of a Starbox subscription and it surprised me to no end. I never thought that I’d be able to pull off this red shade yet it turned out to be a favorite. This might have been exclusive to that month’s box but take a look at Angelina from Starlooks if you want a gorgeous red.

3. Gleam Lip Radiance (by Melanie Mills) in Unstoppable – Currently Unstoppable is my favorite red lip. It’s described on their site as a coral red but it’s a true red on me. It’s an opaque gloss that isn’t sticky on my lips.

4. Senna Maraschino Lip Lacquer – This is a stunning color that Senna brought out this past winter. It’s a cherry red with some golden shimmer. It’s a bold color but it’s so beautiful that I don’t care that it takes me out of my comfort zone.

5. IT Cosmetics Vitality Lip Butter in Darling – I’m cheating here since Darling is going to look pink on a lot of people but on me it looks red. A pinky red but red. If you want sheer lipsticks that are incredibly hydrating and have anti-aging properties then the Vitality Lip Flush Butters are for you. They come in 3 shades and all are great.

6. Frankie Rose Cosmetics Sangria Gloss – As soon as I saw Lisa’s review on Frankie Rose my eyes instantly went to Sangria Gloss. It’s more of a liquid lipstick in feel and it has a little shimmer to give it some fullness. This shade makes me want to look good in red lips.

7. Face Stockholm Lipstick in Summer – I can’t rave enough about the Face Stockholm brand and their lipsticks are in those raves. Summer is a berry pink that falls in the red range to me. It’s beautifully pigmented and a stunner.

8. Lipstick Queen Medieval – Lipstick Queen was practically put on the map with Medieval. It was one of Poppy King’s original lipsticks and it is as beautiful today as when she first created it. If you want to go a little lighter you could try Jean Queen as it has more pink to it.

9. Lipstick Queen Metal Wine – The Metal lipsticks are the newest lipstick launch from Lipstick Queen. I haven’t seen Metal Red though it is probably stunning if Metal Wine is any indication of the beauty of this new line of lipsticks. Metal Wine is described as a deep burgundy and Metal Red as a Metallic Pillarbox Red.

10. Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge Lip Color in Iconic Red – Well the name tells you instantly what to expect. Make Up For Ever has a beautiful line of long lasting lip colors and the star for many is Iconic Red. On one side of the tube is the color while the other side has a gloss. Lisa reviewed this and called it a true cherry red. It’s a true face brightener.

Are any of these reds in your favorite list? What IS your favorite red lip? Now go enjoy the picks of the other bloggers. I think this is going to be a fun Top Ten set! — Marcia

Gleam by Melanie Mills Lip Radiance – a holiday picker upper

Back in the 60’s one of the most popular toothpastes around was called Gleem. It was a P&G brand with advertising about how white your teeth could be and how it prevented decay. It didn’t have the cool Bucky Beaver like Ipana toothpaste did though so when we were kids, we wanted Ipana. When I hear the word “gleem” I think of shine and whiteness. Now how does this tie into a review of lipgloss?  Well Melanie Mills has created a brand called Gleam and I received some lipglosses to review. As soon as I saw the brand my mind thought of a beautiful smile which both Gleem/Gleam products help with.

Melanie Mills is an Emmy award winning makeup artist who has worked wonders on Dancing  with the Stars using Gleam Body Radiance. (Review here). Then in 2012 she expanded her line with Gleam Lip Radiance. Her inspiration was that everyone needs a little fun in their life and that you can choose how bright and fun you want your look to be.

Gleam Lip Radiance

There are 7 shades of Lip Radiance : Naked, Pop My Cork, Uncontrollable, Unforgettable, Unstoppable, Up Against the Wall, and With My Heels On. Just as the names get a little more provocative, so do the colors which range from a nude to a jewel-tone purple to glamorous reds.

When Melanie Mills describes her Lip Radiance she tells us that the longer we wear these, the more good we are doing for our lips. They contain jojoba oil, vitamin E and organic botanicals which help moisturize and soften our lips. They aren’t sticky and the dark colors are very long lasting.

POP MY CORK is the one that’s the easiest for me to wear. It’s a great shade for women who don’t like dark lipsticks. It’s a pinky peach that has the look of a gloss but a thicker consistency that’s more like a lipstick. Unless I’m wearing very cool eyes and cheeks then this is the type of lip color I love to reach for. And Pop My Cork is one I love to reach for.

UNSTOPPABLE is described as a coral red but on me it’s red red (with a teeny bit of coral). It’s a showstopping color that lasts for a long time. I don’t have a lot of dark lip colors but this one is a keeper. I find the shade to be very flattering and I like how it feels on my lips.

UNCONTROLLABLE is described as a raspberry tint and mauve finish. This one is a little bold for me as I’m not used to wearing something with this much purple on my lips. My solution is to put it on, blot it with tissue and then put a clear gloss over it. It acts as a lipstain that way and I’ve now got a more mellow shade. I’ve seen this type of lip color on others with a darker complexion than mine and love it on them.

Lisa’s Top Ten Self Tanners

Self tanners have come a long way, baby. Years ago they were difficult to apply, smelled horrific, and turned you an unnatural looking orange. There are some truly great options out there today, options so great no one should be afraid to faux tan! I put my self tanners into two categories:  one night stands (these only last until you wash them off) and marriage material (these give you more committment – at least one week). Here are my top ten self tanners. The first five are my favorite one night stands and the next five are my favorite marriages.

1.  Gleam Body Radiance

Four fantastic color options, this one night stand is also the perfect remedy for any bad ‘marriages’.

2.  Red Carpet Kolour

This sunscreen is also a gradual self tanner, which is a great way to build up to that commitment.

8.  Tan Towels

See the tan lines? Tan Towels are a super convenient way to make them a thing of the past – even if you have the tan lines of a blogger.

9.  Make Me Smooth You Glow, Girl

I buy this self tanner over and over because it gives gorgeous color and I can get it in any scent I want. My most frequent pick is Day at the Beach, which is a “Coconut infused scent potion that will take you back to lazy days spent at the beach.”

10.  Beautisol Summer Glow Dark Tan Body Self-Tanning Lotion

This is a marriage, all right – it takes some time but it applies beautifully, gives deep dark color, and is total marriage material.

Gleam Body Radiance by Melanie Mills – review and swatches

Summer is here, and that means short sleeves…short shorts…short skirts.  Meaning…a whole lot more exposed skin.  And that makes me nervous – who knows what horrible atrocities developed during those long, dark winter months when my skin was completely shielded from prying eyes??

Which prompts the question keeping me up at night as the days get longer, the temperature soars, and the prospect of shorts and tank tops becomes an inevitability – is it possible to cover up skin issues like stretch marks, dark spots, or uneven faux tans while also making skin look fantastic in general?

I discovered that it is with Gleam Body Radiance (1 oz $15, 2 oz $30, 3.5 oz $40). The BIZ was sent 1 oz. sizes of all four available shades.  But first a little about the creator – her story is essential to truly appreciating Body Radiance.

The gorgeous Melanie Mills

The gorgeous Melanie Mills

Melanie Mills is an Emmy Award–winning makeup artist who was named the Makeup Department Head for Dancing with the Stars in 2007. Since then, she has made quite a name for herself as an expert on creating flawless looks for both face and body. She has racked up nine Emmy nominations and is in high demand for shows like The Dr. Oz Show and for magazines like Allure.

Gleam Body Radiance

Gleam Body Radiance

Melanie actually created Body Radiance for the Dancing with the Stars show. She needed something that made skin look terrific, that hid imperfections, and that could even out spray tans (they can go on quite blotchy, not a good look on TV!).  She also wanted something that was good for the skin, that hydrated and moisturized while also making skin glow. Thanks to the cha-cha and the tango, Gleam by Melanie Mills was born.

Melanie came up with four shades that are all incredibly wearable:  Light Gold, Rose Gold, Bronze Gold, and Deep Gold. While they increase in shade depth to accommodate differing skin tones, I find that I can actually wear every shade – and I have somewhere between fair and medium skin.

Light Gold

Light Gold

Light Gold is the lightest shade. It’s a pale yellow meant for light to medium skin tones. In particular, the yellow covers red marks and areas extremely well. This is also beautiful as a highlighter on the face.

Rose Gold

Rose Gold

Rose Gold is the original shade that Melanie created for Dancing With the Stars. Rose Gold is another great face highlighter shade. And I could not believe what it did for my ‘haven’t seen the sun in seven months’ legs – they looked thinner, glowy, perfect…and natural! Color me completely impressed.

Bronze Gold

Bronze Gold

Bronze Gold is a bronze with a yellow undertone. This shade is meant for medium to dark skin tones, but used judiciously this even works for my skin tone. It’s a terrific option for contouring and shading on the face as well. The gold isn’t shimmer…it’s ‘glow’, which is why all the shades are perfect for both face and body.

Deep Gold

Deep Gold

Deep Gold is a golden chocolate shade for deeper skin tones. It truly looks natural and makes skin look super healthy.

Pictured above are those heavy swatches blended out. Now, when you apply the Body Radiance normally you won’t pile that much on, but this gives you an idea of how beautifully they blend with skin.

I am truly impressed with this product. I love that the color does not transfer to clothes – I put my Body Radiance on my legs, arms, and decolletage and went for a 3 mile hike in 90 degree weather.  I had no issues with streaks or rivers of Rose Gold traversing my body. I am absolutely going to get full size tubes of every color. And I am sleeping fine at night knowing that my skin will look fantastic in even the shortest shorts and the thinnest tank tops. I think Body Radiance is a must-have for everyone.  – Lisa
