A few of our favorite things – a blog hop giveaway that you’ll love to enter

Welcome to Beauty Info Zone. As part of our 12 Days of Christmas giveaways we’ve joined with a group of bloggers to do our first BLOG HOP. Each blog will have a different prize that they’ve chose to give away. I’ve chosen the COLOURPOP FAUNCY BOX which contains 3 creme gel eyeliners and 3 creme pencils. I bought one for myself as well so I could show you what you’ll be getting.

There are 3 pencils in the set:  Bustier – matte black, Soiree – charcoal with some shimmer, Frill – silver/lavender metallic. I really like the variety in the pencils. Both Soiree and Frill add a nice dimension to my collection. These apply easily and they are long lasting. While they don’t work well on me on my waterline, they do last when I use them as a lower lash eyeliner. Frill is described as a soft, icy lavender. It has a little bit of shimmer but it’s not too much. It’s unique to me. Soiree is a pencil that was missing in my collection since finding charcoal is tough. It’s described as a deep gunmetal with silver and gold shimmer. I don’t find the shimmer to be obvious but I don’t layer it which would probably make it show more.

The creme gel eyeliners are all black or charcoal. Bustier – matte black, Polar –  black with multi shimmer, and Soiree –  charcoal metallic, slight shimmer. The Creme Gel Eyeliners are a tad disappointing but that’s because I normally line top and bottom lash lines. While the Creme Gels last quite well and apply smoothly along my top lashline, they don’t last at all on my bottom lashline. They’ll crack on me after a few hours. That doesn’t make me not wear them though, I just use the pencil on the bottom and the creme gel on the top!

Polar is a black that’s not ultra black. It’s softened by multi-colored shimmer in it. I really like this a lot and wish it worked on my bottom lashline. Bustier is described as a deep blackened olive but on me it’s basically black. I don’t find that the olive shows up when used as an eyeliner. Soiree is my favorite. It works well with the pencil of the same name as they are both a gunmetal with silver and gold shimmer. I don’t find the shimmer to be glittery which is a plus in my book.

Side by side: lessons Marcia and Lisa learn from each other (and check out this Farmhouse Fresh Giveaway)

heart for beauty infoThere are lots of amazing beauty blogs out there and we learn a ton from our blogging friends every single day. What you may not know, however, is that we also learn so much from each other! We have both been reviewing products and writing beauty articles for over ten years and we have been working together on Beauty Info Zone for five of those years. Sometimes Marcia gives an essential tip that Lisa finds she can’t live without; sometimes Lisa challenges Marcia to try something out of her comfort zone with surprising results. Today we are writing about one of best gifts we’ve found through the years from each other.

Lisa’s Side:

Long ago, Marcia and I met online through ‘swapping’ on MakeUpAlley. Marcia then told me about another website she ran where there was a great beauty community with reviews and wonderful chat boards. Sadly, that website eventually went out of business, but I made some lifelong friends from all over the world. I also learned one of my favorite beauty tips ever from my future blogging partner, Marcia!

Ok, so you know how gel eyeliners are wonderful…they are easy to apply, they are fun to work with because you can go super defined or you can smudge out the line, they are way easier to work with than liquid liners, and they have even better lasting power than pencil eyeliners. What isn’t so wonderful is how quickly those little pots of amazingness dry out. I could never use up an entire pot of gel liner before it became hard and totally useless.

Old way of using gel eyeliners

Old way of using gel eyeliners

I still remember the joy I felt when I read this tip from Marcia: to get the most out of your gel eyeliner, use the outer side of the pot first. Take your brush and grab liner around the rim. This helps keep the integrity of the product and makes it last and last and last. Some of my favorite gel liners are Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliners. I lost quite a few before I started using this simple trick Marcia taught me. I actually have gel liner pots that are seven years old and they are still as fresh as the day I bought them!!

the best way to use a gel eyeliner

the best way to use a gel eyeliner

Marcia has steered me toward many ‘perfect’ Lisa products, but her gel eyeliner tip stands out for me since it has saved me tons of money over the years. I think of her every time I use a gel liner!

Marcia’s Side:

What Lisa has taught me (besides the fact that I have to loosen up) is not to be so afraid of products. She’ll often convince me to try something that’s out of my comfort zone. Most times she’s right but today’s review is all about hitting the bullseye with FARMHOUSE FRESH. Every time a product from Farmhouse Fresh was offered I’d send the email to Lisa and tell her that it was perfect for her. But recently I did that and she insisted that it was something I was going to love and that I had to do it. Thank you Lisa!!

Farmhouse Fresh Watermelon Basil Vodkatini Body Scrub

Farmhouse Fresh Watermelon Basil Vodkatini Body Scrub

Farmhouse Fresh Watermelon Basil Vodkatini Body Scrub is amazing. When I use this in the shower I don’t want to get out. The smell is to die for. I wish we had Smell-O-Blog for you to sniff what I sniff. It’s a combination of real watermelon seed oil, sweet basil oil and organic vodka mixed with sugar and rice bran oil. This isn’t a wimpy scrub, the sugar (with some salt in it) gives you a lot to work with to help exfoliate your skin. It washes cleanly off leaving behind a little bit of nourishing oil. It also dissolves in the shower so you don’t go slip sliding away.

I keep a plastic spoon in my shower to mix the oil into the scrub to evenly disperse it. This Farmhouse Fresh Body Scrub not only makes me smell delicious but it leaves my skin wonderfully soft. I hate to use a body lotion after it so I wait as long as I can before applying anything else. I just want to smell myself. That fragrant aroma does fade away so you can continue with a fragrance of your choice – but I wish it didn’t.

Update – we’ve just realized that Farmhouse Fresh has a Facebook giveaway for 10 of the amazing Watermelon Vodkatini Body Scrubs. It’s easy to enter by following on Instagram. This is open through August 2nd and then announced on Watermelon Day, August 3rd.

Top Ten Tuesday picks favorite colored eyeliners

It’s so nice to be back online and able to write a TOP TEN TUESDAY review. This week is especially fun since it’s about eyeliners and I can’t live without my eyeliner when I’m doing my makeup. There were two hard things for me with this week’s challenge – 1) I can’t get upstairs to take pictures so I left out some favorite brands like Urban Decay and 2) we aren’t “allowed” to include black or brown which is what I wear most days. But I am rising to the challenge and picking out my favorite colored liners.

1.  MAKEUP GEEK GEL LINERS – These are absolutely wonderful gel liners that I can’t recommend highly enough. The price tag of $8.99 makes these a steal because they are so long lasting and wear better than most gel eyeliners. I especially love Rave shown below because it’s a fabulous taupe. If you read the linked review you’ll see Electric, Mystic and Fame that are must haves if you love beautiful colors in gel eyeliners. *

2.  TARTE smolderEYES™ Amazonian clay waterproof liners  I can’t rave enough about tarte’s eyeliners. They make a variety of colors and styles. The two shown in the collage are Taupe and Rose Gold. Tarte comes out with new colors all the time and the best time to buy them is when they are part of a set, you’ll get shades you didn’t know you would fall in love with and at a great price. *

3. CAILYN LINEFIX GEL LINERS – I have a slew of these because they make shades that aren’t easily available from every line. These are $21 retail but I’ve yet to pay that. I’ve gotten them in subscription boxes and found them for less online. The collage shows black but the review shows the gorgeous green, blue and purple available.

4. PIXI BEAUTY ENDLESS SILKY EYE PENCILS – If you are seeking colored eyeliner pencils you can’t go wrong with Pixi Beauty. These are amazing. I have the set shown which contains Black Noir, Deep Plum, Black Cocoa, Sage Gold and Oyster Glow as well as singles like Cafe Gold. These glide on and are truly silky. The set is $18 so you get a nice variety but once you try it you’ll go on to buy the singles for $12 too.

5. MARC JACOBS BEAUTY HIGHLINER GEL CRAYONS – No I don’t have this set (yet) but it’s amazing and I want it. I do have individual colors of the Highliner Gel Crayons and they are something to aspire owning. These are so smooth and the colors are fabulous. This set is $45 and contains  O(vert) (forest green), Brown(out) (bronze with shimmer), Th(ink) (deep navy), (Plum)age (vivid purple), Blacquer (black), Sunset (golden bronze shimmer), Midnight in Paris (inky indigo blue). I have full sizes of Blacquer, Th(ink) and (Plum)age and those are $25 each so you can see what a gem this limited edition set is.

6. YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID EYE PENS – My favorite liquid eyeliners when it comes to colors out of the ordinary. There are 5 shades all together and I use the black and brown (marron) all the time but the other 3 are gems. Verde is an amazing green and Azul is the most unusual blue – it is not navy as you can see. I highly recommend these liquid liners and never want to be without Marron.

7.  TARINA TARANTINO HYPERLINER – The one shown is Ultra Violet and it’s a fabulous shade as well as a fabulous pencil eyeliner. Besides being beautifully pigmented, it’s long lasting. The secret to this is to watch Hautelook for sales on Tarina Tarantino since the products are so well priced. I’ve bought most of my TT products this way.

8. IT COSMETICS NO TUG WATERPROOF GEL EYELINER PENCILS – All 10 shades are shown in our review of these gel eyeliner pencils so you can see what beauties they are. IT Cosmetics continues to be one of my favorite lines and these beautiful eyeliners keep up the tradition.  These are my 5 and I am especially fond of Lucky Jade, Navy and Silk Taupe. It’s nice to have a navy that isn’t black so that makes it special. Plum (check review) is an especially pretty shade. *

The numbers stop at 8 but there are probably 2 dozen colored liners in here that I love. While black and brown may rule the day, colored liners should rule the night! Any that you love to recommend?

Benefit They’re Real! Push Up Liner – is this as great as it sounds?

Benefit they're Real! push up liner

Benefit they’re Real! push up liner

On Friday June 27th Benefit is releasing their new, very talked about eyeliner – They’re Real! Push Up Liner. This liner is a combination of a pen and a gel. It looks like a pen but is actually a gel that comes up through the pen packaging.

Benefit They're Real! Push Up Liner

Benefit They’re Real! Push Up Liner

When I first read about this innovative product I was so looking forward to purchasing it. I really couldn’t wait since I felt this could be revolutionary for someone who loves gel liners. I joined the waiting list so that I could be an early purchaser. I’ve had it now for almost 3 weeks and used it a handful of times.

Benefit they're Real! push up liner

Benefit they’re Real! push up liner

They’re Real! Push Up Liner is one of the darkest black liners I’ve encountered. Black is not always black but the Push Up Liner is darker than anything I’ve worn in a long time. It’s in a pen that twists up. It is hard to get started but after the first time it seems to come out evenly. The tip is a rubber “AccuFlex” tip that is designed to “hug the lash line” and deposit just the right amount of black eyeliner. What you need to watch out for, because it’s hard to see, is if it comes out with a little ball at the end. If it does you’ll probably want to wipe that away since it doesn’t seem to smooth out as you move the pen.

What I’m not crazy about is that once it’s on, it’s really on. That’s great for long lasting wear but it’s not great if you need to fix something. I find it gives me a wider line than I prefer too. I have to be very diligent to get it thin. Actually the last time I wore it, I was able to get the top line thin but I switched to a liquid liner for the bottom since that’s my sticking point with the liner. If I were to go someplace hot and humid I’d take more time to apply this thinly top and bottom. On most days though this is not what I’ll be reaching for.

close up of tip

close up of tip before use

This is tenacious. It doesn’t give you a long time to work with because it’s on the dry side. I doubt you have much time to smudge it if that’s how you wear your eyeliner. It comes off with my Mary Kay eye makeup remover but I have to work harder to get it off. Benefit is going to release a special eye makeup remover for this but it’s not absolutely necessary if you have a good one already. You’ll never get it off with just your face cleanser though.

gel coming through

gel coming through

My recommendation is that the first time you use it you shouldn’t be in a hurry. It takes a little time to learn how this works best for you. I got way too much on the first time. I’m better at it now but I’m not perfect. I can do a liquid liner or a regular gel liner quickly but I’m much more cautious with this Benefit pen.

Benefit they're Real! push up liner swatch, see the ball at the end?

Benefit they’re Real! push up liner swatch, see the ball at the end?

I’m not in love with this but I don’t dislike it either. If you are watching how you spend your money then save the $24 that this costs and buy a liner that’s easier to use. But if you love a challenge or you love super black eyeliner than this could be what you are looking for.benefit liner back

I’m sure I would have bought Benefit they’re Real! push up liner no matter what but I did fall for the hype. In my book it doesn’t add up to it though. Are you planning on buying this liner? — Marcia

Cailyn Liquid Eyeliners are competing for the win

I’m on a liquid eyeliner expedition to find the best. For years I wore nothing but gel eyeliners and while I still love them I think I was just ready for a change. In this search I’ve been testing a lot of eyeliners, both pencil and liquid, to see what which ones are the winners. So far I brought you my first eyeliner quest here and then reviewed the matte liquid eyeliners from Ellis Faas here. Today brings you Cailyn and their liquid eyeliners plus a pencil eyeliner. Let’s see if they can take the top spot in this competition.

Cailyn Line-Fix Gel Eyeliners

Cailyn Line-Fix Gel Eyeliners

The above picture is to show you how I love my Cailyn Gel Eyeliners. I reviewed these and still recommend them although I did get a strange texture in my Chocolate Mousse one from a subscription box. Other than that one though they are amazing liners. I haven’t given up gel eyeliners though since they are longer lasting than any other liners I own. Cailyn doesn’t have to worry about me and their gel liners, that’s for sure.

My original quest was to find the perfect brown liquid eyeliner but that’s not as easy as finding the perfect black liquid eyeliner. So many companies only make black liquids and ignore the browns. Cailyn Cosmetics makes two different types of liquid eyeliners and one does come in brown although I don’t have that one (y.e.t.).

Cailyn Liquid Eyeliner (brown)

Cailyn Liquid Eyeliner (brown)

I do have it though in both Silver and Blue Shimmer and I love it. Both of these were in my Wantable subscription boxes which is great since Cailyn is a brand I am very impressed with. I wore the Blue Shimmer the other day with a neutral brown eye and it was the perfect pop of color. I found that it was easy to use and dried in an appropriate amount of time. With a liquid liner that has such a short brush you do have to be careful not to get it on your eyelashes but that’s the only thing to worry about. It’s close to perfect otherwise.

Caitlyn Blue Shimmer Liquid Eyeliner

Caitlyn Blue Shimmer Liquid Eyeliner

The other liquid eyeliner from Cailyn is their idefine Liquid Eyeliner (sent for review). The only downside to idefine is it only comes in black ($18). I want this in every color. It’s that terrific! It’s a cross between a felt tip and a floppy tip.

Cailyn idefine Liquid Eyeliner

Cailyn idefine Liquid Eyeliner

I find this incredibly easy to apply because the tip is thin enough to get a fine line yet it’s sturdier than most liquid brushes. It’s not a brush though it may look brushlike. So many of the liquid eyeliners I’ve found apply too thick for my taste. This is just perfect. The best thing is that it lasts beautifully and it’s a true dark black.

Cailyn idefine liner

Cailyn idefine liner

Cailyn idefine

Cailyn isn’t done though with eyeliner since they make some fabulous gel pencils. The Gel Glider Eyeliner Pencils ($17) come in 6 colors (black, chocolate, green, blue, purple and charcoal) and they do what they say – they GLIDE on. They are so smooth and easy to use.

Cailyn Gel Glider Eyeliner Pencil

Cailyn Gel Glider Eyeliner Pencil

The Chocolate (received for review) is a great brown. I love a brown that looks brown and not black. I also love that this is an eyeliner I can sharpen. I’ve got too many self sharpening liners that either break off or don’t get a fine enough line for me. Cailyn stuck with a real pencil which I appreciate. I will be able to use this exactly the way I want to – sharp and down to the end.

Black idefine liquid, chocolate Gel Glider pencil

Black idefine liquid, chocolate Gel Glider pencil

I think I could live happily ever after with Cailyn’s collection of eyeliners. They know what they are doing when it comes to these types of products. I can say for sure that idefine is in the running to win the gold medal for black liquid eyeliners!! Have you tried any of these Cailyn eyeliners? What did you think? — Marcia

Starlooks Starbox for November – the best yet

Starlooks November 2014

Starlooks November 2014

Starlooks November opened

Starlooks November opened

The November Starbox by Starlooks is probably my favorite of the boxes I’ve received for review and that’s saying a lot since I love the blush palette from October. This $15 (plus shipping) box is loaded with some fabulous items that will get a lot of use in the Marcia BIZ house. November’s box is all about the eyes and I’ll never complain about that. With a gel eyeliner, an eyeshadow palette, an eyeliner brush and a bonus eyeliner pencil sharpener I couldn’t be happier.

Starlooks November 2013 opened box

First there’s a 5 Shade Shadow Palette in Monaco ($41). Starlooks makes over 18 different eyeshadow palettes which is pretty amazing. Each is named after a wonderful country to visit. Monaco isn’t sold separately, it’s a special edition for the November box. The colors and textures are quite varied in the palette. There are no names so you just get my personal descriptions. There are a lot of combinations you can do with these 5 shadows. With all shadows I use an eyeshadow primer and I’d definitely recommend using one with this to get the most out of the colors. My swatches were done with my fingers so they are darker than when used with a brush.

Starlooks Monaco eyeshadow palette

Starlooks Monaco eyeshadow palette

White – a matte shade that’s great as a base, browbone or tear duct area shade. As much as I love a shimmer shadow this is the finish that’s better for me in the tear duct.

Taupe – yes I said taupe. As a huge taupe lover you better believe this is my favorite. It’s a satin shade, no shimmer but not flat.

Blue green – it’s not quite teal, it’s not navy, it’s more of a combination of the two but heavier on the blue. This is a matte but I find it to be smoother than most matte shadows.

Starlooks November Monaco

Orange – this is the shade I am most afraid of. I like orange but this one is bright and has a reddish undertone. By using a soft full brush though it isn’t harsh.

Gold – there’s a slight metallic quality to this. It’s a yellow gold and much easier to wear than it looks like it would be. There is some shimmer but no glitter.

Infinity Pot Liner in Orion ($13)- I love this!! I was on the verge of buying a teal gel eyeliner and kept going back and forth about it. I’m so glad I hesitated since the Starlooks one is excellent. The color is beautiful and especially looks great with the shadows in the palette. Starlooks calls Orion a sultry jade but I find it to be more teal. Whatever it’s called it’s long lasting and will give a great pop of color.

Slanted Liner Brush #824 ($18)- this brush is of excellent quality. It’s a slanted flat liner brush that is very smooth and applies the gel liner perfectly. It’s a great addition to this box and my collection.

Cosmetic pencil sharpener – this was a surprise extra in the box. At first I was looking for the pencil but then realized it was just a fun extra and one that definitely will get use. I have several Starlooks pencils as well as a “few” others and I’m always searching for a good sharpener since I misplace them.

Starlooks brush #824 and sharpener

The November Starbox has a retail value of $72 which makes it a bargain for the $15 a subscription costs. You can still purchase it for $25 on the Starlooks site. If you are looking for a great gift idea for a makeup lover in your life, they have specials going on right now for subscriptions. Whatever you do, you need to subscribe before Dec. 10th to get the amazing 15 eyeshadow palette that will be unique to the December box. This $98 value will cost you just the $15 (+shipping) of the subscription. Don’t miss out on this fabulous special.

Starbox is a subscription service that just keeps getting better. You’ll find an occasional product from them in other subscriptions since those services have realized that the Starlooks cosmetics are pretty great too; but if you get a Starlooks subscription (or even a single box) you’ll be assured of getting some gems. — Marcia

You want gel liners? Then look to Cailyn Cosmetics for colors galore!

cailyn eyelinersAlmost two years ago I went to the IMATS show in L.A. and learned about Cailyn Cosmetics. I spent a small fortune on that trip between what I bought at Barneys, Neiman Marcus, and IMATS but the one product that I came home the most excited about was my Cailyn LineFix Gel Eyeliner. I had been looking for a green gel eyeliner so when I saw it I ignored all the other shades and put that in my cart instantly (along with half a dozen other items).

Ever since then all I’ve done is raved about these gel eyeliners. I’ve since bought two more and gotten others in my subscription boxes; recently Cailyn sent a few shades for review and I’ve fallen in love with those too.

Cailyn Line-Fix Gel Eyeliners

Cailyn Line-Fix Gel Eyeliners

Cailyn LineFix Gel Eyeliners come in 13 shades now and I want them all.  Shades available are Black, Chocolate Mousse, Blue*, Green, Bronze, Purple*, Plum, Charcoal, Mermaid, Gold Khaki, Iron, Fall Night and White. The colors are rich and vibrant and they last! These are waterproof so they even sell a product called Pure Ease Eye-Lip Makeup Remover though I find that as long as I use eye makeup remover that they come off well.

Here are the 7 in my possession right now. Black which is the classic dark black. Blue which I find to be a little more denim than navy (one of my favorites). Chocolate Mousse looks darker than the black in this picture but it’s really a dark chocolate; my jar happens to have a looser texture than the others so I have to use a thinner brush with it. Gold Khaki  is the newest one I bought. I wish it was more gold and not quite so dark but it’s still unique. Green, my first and still a huge favorite. Iron, a light charcoal. They do make a true charcoal but Iron is a softer version for those that don’t want a liner that’s too dark. Purple is a true purple and doesn’t have as much red in it as Plum does.

My three favorites are shown below – Blue, Purple and Green. The reason they are favorites is that they are the colors that they say they are. So many times everything just looks black when I wear them but these show the color so they are an enhancement to my eye look.
