Happy 4th of July!! My red, white, and blue favorites for nails, lips, and eyes

My picks for 4th of July nail polish shades

My picks for 4th of July nail polish shades

My favorite red, white, and blue nail polishes are:  Rescue Beauty Lounge Cherry Love (popsicle red), China Glaze White Cap (sheer white with gold shimmer, I am wearing this one now!), Cult Nails Princess (light dusty blue with pink shimmer).

My July lip gloss picks

My holiday lip gloss picks include:  Butter London Come to Bed Red (classic cream red), Elizabeth Arden Crystal Clear Lip Gloss (sheer shiny gloss), It Cosmetics News Anchor Blue (sheer blue that makes teeth look super white).

Red, white and blue eyeshadow picks

Far left row from top to bottom:

Nars Tibet (the consummate shimmery sheer white)

MAC White Frost (a buttery white frost that is perfect for the brow and inner corner of the eye)

MAC Crystal Avalanche (fabulous pigmentation, and this works beautifully as a face highlighter too)

July whites and reds

Second from left row top to bottom:

MAC Vanilla (this is a homemade pan made from the Vanilla pigment.  I prefer this to the regular MAC Vanilla eyeshadow, which I think is rather boring.  My absolute favorite for an eye-widening lid shade)

MAC Star Violet (just enough plum to keep it from being too red, and the Veluxe Pearl texture can’t be beat)

MAC Plum Dressing (gorgeous, different, and makes a great smoky eye look)

July reds and blues

July reds and blues

Far left row in picture above, top to bottom:

MAC Moon’s Reflection (stunning periwinkle blue that is totally wearable)

MAC Leisure Time (red-gold-bronze that is unique and stunning with brown eyes)

Giorgio Armani #46 (fantastic red-bronze that doubles as a beautiful blush, it applies soft but is buildable for more drama)

Second row pictured above, top to bottom:

MAC Electric Eel (not for everyone, but this is the prettiest, most dramatic blue I have ever owned)

MAC Freshwater (fantastic ocean blue, love this as a liner…and it’s got that fabulous Veluxe Pearl texture)

MAC Deep Truth (sultry true deep blue, one of my most favorite blues of all time…it is a perfect liner shade)

Far right row top to bottom:

Sue Devitt Alexandria (totally underrated brand…this is a fantastic cobalt blue)

MAC Contrast (deep violet-blue, try this over black eyeliner for some mega sultry drama)

Giorgio Armani #1 (rich, velvety navy blue that is a fabulous eyeliner)

There you have my red, white, and blue selections in celebration of patriotic makeup geekdom!!  What are yours??  – Lisa

Elizabeth Arden 2012 Rose Aurora Spring/Summer Collection: lips, cheeks, eyes review and swatches

Elizabeth Arden Rose Aurora Lipstick

Earlier this week I posted about the fabulous new highlighter and bronzers in the Elizabeth Arden 2012 Spring Collection.  Here’s the rest of the collection, with beautiful spring colors for the lips, cheeks, and eyes.  First up, the stunning Rose Aurora Lipstick ($22.50).

Rose Aurora lipstick and swatch

This is an absolutely gorgeous rose gold lipstick that is creamy, smooth, and glossy.

Rose Aurora swatch

I get goosebumps just looking at the swatch…isn’t this color perfection for spring??  The soft rosy shade is shot through with tiny golden shimmers that make lips look plump.  I get no fragrance or taste from this lipstick, it is so perfect it’s become a staple in my collection.

Elizabeth Arden Honey Cream Blush

Also in the collection is the Honey Cream Blush ($24) that Marcia first reviewed here.  This is a very pretty, brownish pink that give a great natural flush.

Honey Cream swatch - outdoor indirect lighting

I have problems with most cream blushes in that they don’t last on me, but this one lasts longer than most.  It’s not a really wet, sticky cream blush.  It’s on the drier side so it lasts longer and has a great natural finish.

Just look at how pretty that swatch is – you can see there are small golden shimmer so it’s not completely matte, just shimmery enough to make you look nice and glowy.

Elizabeth Arden Brown Liquid Liner

Finally, for the eyes there are two Liquid Liners ($18), Brown and Black.  They both have the firm, felt-tipped pen that I now think is essential for a great liquid liner.  It makes lining your eyes super easy, even if you aren’t much of an artist.

Elizabeth Arden Black Liquid Liner

You get a great thin, precise line that you easily make thicker.  These go on wet, so wait a few minutes after applying before curling your lashes or putting on mascara.  Once they dry, they aren’t going anywhere, that’s for sure.

Liquid Liner swatches - brown on top, black below

They are both highly pigmented.  The brown is great for soft, daytime looks, and the black has tons of pigment and is great for more ‘eye drama’.  Here’s a great tip from Elizabeth Arden: ‘Apply liquid liner as close to the roots of the lashes as possible, starting at the inside corner of the eyes. Work your way toward the outer corners by making little connecting dashes and finish with a little sweep up at the ends.’

Elizabeth Arden 2012 Spring Collection FOD

Pictured above I am wearing the Rose Aurora Lipstick, Honey Cream Blush, and Brown Liquid Liner.  It’s a really terrific collection with a color palette that is simply perfection for spring and summer.  This collection is available for a limited time, so get to the mall pronto!!  – Lisa

Elizabeth Arden Rose Aurora Spring/Summer 2012 Collection: highlighter and bronzers review and swatches

Elizabeth Arden has the prettiest spring collection I have seen so far.  The colors are all beautiful rosy shades, and together they give a truly wonderful, glowy look. This post is all about the highlighter and bronzers, a separate post will focus on the lips, cheeks, and eyes.

Probably my most favorite item in the collection is the Pure Finish Highlighter in Rose Illumination ($34).

Elizabeth Arden Rose Illumination

I am not kidding, this beautiful powder gives the best glowy look EVER.  It’s a golden rose shade that makes your skin look almost incandescent.

Rose Illumination

Pictured above is in direct sunlight, below is in indirect sunlight.

The shimmer is super fine, and the finish is absolutely stunning!

Rose Illumination swatch - indirect outdoor lighting

Above is a heavy swatch in indirect sunlight, below is in direct sunlight.  Obviously you don’t put that much on your face, just a light swish over the powder with a big fluffy brush, then sweep  over your face and you look amazing.

This powder is so good I can even wear it without foundation and my skin looks great.  You have to check this out.

While you are at it, be sure to give the bronzers a try too:

Elizabeth Arden Spring Collection Pure Finish Bronzer Powders

The collection has several Pure Finish Bronzer Powders ($38).  There are three different colors:  Warm Radiance, Soft Radiance, and Deep Radiance.

bronzer packaging - isn't it adorable?

I absolutely love the packaging, an embossed rose gold metal collectible compact.

another view - Elizabeth Arden Spring Collection Bronzers

The bronzers are a soft, finely milled powder that doesn’t look dry and powdery on.  I had no problems with that streaky look you can get from bronzers, even with Deep Radiance, the darkest shade.  The bronzers have an ingredient in them called Zin’cite, which is there to help protect skin cells.  They also have a slew of other antioxidant ingredients like green tea, white tea and minerals.

Soft Radiance Bronzer

The Soft Radiance Bronzer is indeed a soft color that would work even for light complexions.  It’s a slightly shimmery golden-toned bronze.

Soft Radiance swatch

The shimmers are golden and very fine, so you don’t look sparkly – just glowy.  If you want to liven up your complexion without looking too tan, this is the color for you.

Warm Radiance Bronzer

Warm Radiance is the medium shade of the three bronzers.  I have neutral skin that falls somewhere between fair and medium, and this one is the best color for me as an overall bronzer.

Warm Radiance swatch

It’s obviously deeper than Soft Radiance, and this one leans more toward red than golden.  I really love the color, it’s fabulous on and looks very natural.

Deep Radiance Bronzer

Deep Radiance is – surprise! – the deepest of the three colors.  If you have medium to dark skin, this is for you.  Any lighter than medium and you can easily use this for contouring or for blush.

Deep Radiance swatch

I love the color, it’s extremely pretty – I’ve used this as my blush for the last week or so and it gives a terrific pop of color.

Elizabeth Arden 2012 Spring Collection Brush

And if you need a big fluffy brush for your highlighter and bronzer, the collection includes the All Over Face Powder Brush ($22).  It can be used to apply powder products to your face, neck, or body.  It’s good for contouring and for blending in your products, too.

gotta love a big, fluffy brush!

This is the perfect size for powder highlighter and bronzers.  It’s not the softest brush I’ve tried, but the size is great and the price is terrific.

My Elizabeth Arden Spring Collection FOD

In the picture above, I used the highlighter as an all over powder, Warm Radiance as a bronzer, and Deep Radiance as a powder blush.  (My eyeliner and lipstick are also from this collection.)  I love the powder products in this collection – stay tuned for my review of the color products!  – Lisa

Elizabeth Arden High Shine Lip Gloss Set review and swatches

We are all looking for good gifts and stocking stuffers, and I tend to subscribe to the ‘buy one for you, and one for me” theory.  The Elizabeth Arden High Shine Lip Gloss Set ($19.50) is a perfect example!  A set of four mini beautiful lip glosses in a great coin purse for less than $20?  One for you, and one for me!!

Elizabeth Arden High Shine Lip Gloss Set

This cute little set is only available at Macy’s.  It has four mini’s of Elizabeth Arden’s best-selling shades of High Shine Lip Gloss.  I actually prefer the mini size of lip glosses to full size, because it’s very rare that I am able to use up an entire gloss before it’s time to toss it.

This case is extremely cute – a red croco that also has a coin purse inside.

It’s really adorable.  And the lip glosses are excellent.  They have no scent, go on smoothly with a lot of pigment, and they last a nice long time.  They aren’t the least bit sticky, they have a great feel to them that is emollient and pleasant.  The colors are super pretty too.

The lip gloss colors include Shimmering Rose, a sweet shimmery cool rose color:

Sparkle Mauve, a deeper color with less subtle shimmer, great for evenings:

Berrylicious is a beautiful shimmery peachy-pink:

And the last one is Candlelight, a creamy sheer off-white with golden sparkles.  This looks great alone, and I really love it over lip pencil.  I fill in my lips with the pencil, putting less color on the middle part, then put Candlelight over and it helps make them look bigger.

And here are swatches of all four colors:

I think the colors are all super flattering, and I love the look and feel of the lip glosses.  At $19.95, there is no doubt this is a ‘one for you, one for me’ gift!!  (This gift set is available exclusively at Macy’s)  – Lisa

Memories of Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Mousse Foundation (review)

Long ago and far away in the land of Marcia Being Young, she used a foundation by Elizabeth Arden, Flawless Finish Mousse Makeup. She was teaching at the time and needed a foundation that she could apply quickly on dark mornings and not have to worry about unevenness, streaking, blending or wearing away during long days with little children. It served her quite well for years and years but then the store where she enjoyed stopping to purchase it closed and it slid from her consciousness after the last stashed bottle was gone.

image of Flawless Finish Mousse Foundation from elizabetharden.com

Fast forward to 2011 and Marcia is again enjoying this very same Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Mousse Foundation. Amazingly, though she’s changed, what was perfect years ago, is still great for her today. In those early days her skin was very oily and her t-zone was an active mess. Yet the Mousse foundation worked for her skin. Now her skin is much drier and her t-zone usually often plays nicely (unless it’s over 80 degrees F) and she finds that the foundation is still working. She’s moved from the land of Marcia Being Young to the land of Marcia Being Old Middle Aged and packed Mousse with her.

Now we’ll turn this over to Marcia and find out what her recent experiences are. Take it away Marcia….

Here we are with the next in my series of foundation reviews with an oldie but goodie. When Elizabeth Arden reentered my life the one item I kept thinking about was the Flawless Finish Mousse foundation ($33) that I’d used for so long. Since my tastes in cosmetics have changed so much and I’ve been introduced to much more expensive brands I was worried that this wouldn’t live up to my memories but I wanted to give it a shot.

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Mousse Foundation

pump

The mousse foundation is a water based product for normal skin. It’s very lightweight and feels quite airy on my skin. If you notice in this (truly ugly) picture you can see how it bubbles up when I spray it on my hand.

Arden Mousse shaken and sprayed onto hand (Vanilla 22)

The foundation is buildable though if this isn’t enough coverage. At the time I originally used the foundation I probably didn’t own a cosmetic brush, let alone a foundation brush. I used my fingers then and find I like it with my fingers now. I’ve tried it with a foundation brush (both taklon and goat hair) and with my Beauty Blender sponge but because of the light consistency I think my fingers are the best tool with the sponge coming in second.

Arden Flawless Finish Mousse Foundation in Vanilla

This comes in 11 shades and is an excellent choice for someone looking for a translucent finish. It works for young and old middle age alike. I’m happy to have this back in my life; it’s sort of like reliving my youth. — Marcia
