Long hair? You are going to love this curling iron: Pro Beauty Tools X-Long Gold Curling Wand

PBIR1900-product-600x600This review is for all the long-haired ladies! You know how it goes…the shorter the curling iron wand, the harder you have to work to curl your hair. A shorter wand means either 1. You take twice as long because you can only curl half the amount of hair or 2.  ou get so impatient you just start curling big chunks of hair, which don’t really get a firm curl because the hair is so piled up on the wand. Lose lose either way.                                                                                                                                                                                       sample

Does Bed Head Curlipops Spiral Styling Iron give me yummy hair?

1980s-hairBack in the ’80’s we never went anywhere without meticulously curling-ironed hair (the wooden dummy was optional). Then in the ’90’s we wouldn’t go near a curling iron. These days, I don’t just have one curling iron, I have many – each giving me a different version of the long, beachy curls that I love. My philosophy is I can never have too many curling irons, so I was happy to add a new type of curling to the mix when Bed Head sent me their BED HEAD CURLIPOPS 1″ TOURMALINE CERAMIC SPIRAL STYLING IRON ($24.99) to test.  BED HEAD CURLIPOPS 1" TOURMALINE CERAMIC SPIRAL STYLING IRONBED HEAD CURLIPOPS 1" TOURMALINE CERAMIC SPIRAL STYLING IRON
The packaging is super cute – while the wand is a spiral wand, the package looks like a lollipop. Very clever. What makes this spiral curling iron different is that it has no clamp, so you use your fingers to hold the hair in place. I have to admit, I was a bit flummoxed at first…there was a learning curve to figuring out how to curl hair without a clamp. Luckily, a glove is included so there was no danger of burning my fingers.BED HEAD CURLIPOPS 1" TOURMALINE CERAMIC SPIRAL STYLING IRON
I eventually figured out I needed to section my hair, then take about a 1 inch section, twist it into a rope, and wrap it around the wand, holding the end in place with my gloved hand. At first it seemed more time intensive than a traditional iron, but then it got super easy and didn’t take any more time at all. The big payoff is that there is no ‘crimp’ from a clamp, so the curls are true throughout.

I also found that this iron creates those curls very quickly – faster than any other iron I have. And the curls last all day long without the help of hairspray. In fact, my latest bout with the Curlipop gave me curls that lasted for three days!

Here are the specs:
  • Tourmaline ceramic technology on barrel
  • High heat up to 400 F
  • On/Off switch
  • Dual voltage
  • Cool tip
  • Includes heat protective glove
  • Clamp free wrap and go design
  • Tangle free swivel cord

So, while it took me about half a head of hair to get used to the curling iron the first time I used it, I ended up getting the hang of it and definitely loving the results. If you want yummy hair, you can pick up the BED HEAD CURLIPOPS 1″ TOURMALINE CERAMIC SPIRAL STYLING IRON at Ulta.  – Lisa

Straighten, curl, and add volume with the InStyler MAX

InStyler MAX

InStyler MAX

One single tool that solves every styling issue? It almost sounds too good to be true. With three women in my house who need hair styling tools, the bathroom cabinet is awfully crowded. I’ve got long, fine hair that I like to straighten or curl. My older daughter has long, extremely thick hair that she loves to put waves in, and my youngest daughter has shoulder length hair that needs straightening and volume. The InStyler MAX sounded like a solution to all those straightening/curling/heat styling tools in the bathroom vanity.                                                                                           *pr sample

The InStyler MAX is a rotating hot iron unlike any other styling tool. The patented design of the tourmaline ceramic polishing rotating cylinder combined with ionic bristles that separate your hair allow for lower heat and in turn won’t fry your hair like traditional tools – finally. Straighten, curl, smooth and shine your hair in minutes with one tool.

InStyler MAX

My version is the purple ¼ inch barrel ($99, available at Ulta and Walmart). All the goodies included:

Heated rotating barrel that goes in two different directions

Ionic bristles

Tourmaline ceramic floating plate

4 heat settings

Removable cool tip

30 second rapid heat up

Auto shut off

6 inch swivel cord

Removable heat protectant cage

Styling comb

Heat resistant mat

The removable cool tip is great – I put this in and see no reason to take it out. It allows you to hold the iron safely from the top without burning your fingers. The mat is nice because you need to set the iron down while sectioning hair for styling. It also comes with a heat protectant cage that you can snap on and off…I preferred it without the cage which just seemed to get in the way.

This device has a learning curve for sure. The barrel rotates in two directions, and you can switch between each easily. The barrel provides the heat while the brush provides the tension and shine. I recommend checking out some of the ‘how to’ videos on YouTube before using this.

Since the three females in my house have totally different hair we all gave this a shot and found it worked differently for each one of us.

I have mid-back length hair that is fine, but there’s a lot of it. I have very long layers. The InStyler MAX works really well for straightening my hair and for adding volume. I leave it close to my roots for about 30 seconds for a wonderful lift, and I like how I can rotate the barrel in the direction I would use to backcomb for volume without tangles and damaging the hair shaft. This is not my choice for curls, however. It gives me soft, beach waves but they don’t last long – my hair is just too heavy.

My oldest daughter has long hair that is very thick and heavy. She likes the InStyler MAX for straightening her ends and for correcting any weirdness or kinks that might have happened overnight. However, her hair is so thick and there is so much of it that it takes a very long time to do a full head treatment. Also, her hair is wiry and coarse, and the InStyler MAX just doesn’t hold her hair tight enough to really make a lasting wave or curl.

The InStyler MAX is perfect for my youngest daughter’s shoulder length, medium/fine hair. It gets rid of frizz and leaves her hair smooth and shiny. She can get a long-lasting curl or a head full of waves if she wants. It doesn’t take long to do all of her hair, especially when she sections it and works on the bottom layers first. Another bonus – the InStyler MAX is light so her hand doesn’t get tired, and it’s great to have all these styling options in one single tool.

InStyler MAX

Overall evaluation:  the InStyler MAX shines for all hair types as a hair straightener that also gives volume. Those with shoulder-length and shorter hair styles will love the wave and curls it can give. Those with longer hair styles may find their hair to be too heavy for long-lasting curls. The best results are found with medium to fine hair, while those with wiry or coarse hair will probably want something even more powerful. What do you think, is the InStyler MAX right for you?  – Lisa

Free flowing waves with Philip B. and John Frieda

All my life I have been chasing the perfect wave. Not like Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze in Point Break…although that is my favorite guilty pleasure movie of all time…more like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex in the City.

Not searching for this kind of wave...

Not searching for this kind of wave…

Searching for this kind of wave!

Searching for this kind of wave!

We were recently sent two products to test that together make free-flowing waves for the ultimate summer hairstyle. Move over Keanu and Patrick…John Frieda and Philip B are the dynamic duo making my awesome waves.

Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray

Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray

I start with the Philip B Self Adjusting Hairspray ($22). A little sprayed onto damp roots gives a nice lift and helps hold those waves all day.

After drying hair with a paddle brush, it’s time for the John Frieda® 1 ½ Inch Frizz Ease® Conical by Conair ($39.99). I have no experience using a curling iron without a clamp, and had my doubts as I am not exactly known for my awesome hand/eye coordination. The benefit of clamplessness (is that a word??) is no danger of awkward, unnatural bends in the hair.

John Frieda Curling Iron glove

My biggest fear was burning myself, but included with the Conical Curling Iron is a very smart three-fingered glove.

This wand has a 1 ½ inch clamp-free conical barrel with a titanium ceramic coating. The coating prevents frizz and keeps hair looking smooth. It heats up very quickly, reaching 400ºF in only 30 seconds. I wrap sections around the wand, holding them in place with my gloved fingers. It definitely makes for natural looking waves, while a curling iron with a clamp gives me a tighter curl.

After I curl each section, I go back to the Philip B. Self Adjusting Hair Spray. I have very fine hair, so non-aerosol hairspray almost never works for me. It’s just too heavy and instead of holding my curls, it typically kills them. I found that this hairspray works great as long as I remember to hold it a good 12 inches away  from my hair when I spray. This helps give it room to develop into a finer spray that won’t clump hair together or make it stiff. The ingredients include Vitamin B5 and amino acids for conditioning hair.  Each spray strengthens hold, so I use just one spray for a light hold and three for major hold.
