Makeup Wars starring Senna Cosmetics

Senna Cosmetics Nude Eyes, eyebrows, bronzer and cream foundation

Senna Cosmetics Nude Eyes, eyebrows, bronzer and cream foundation

This week the Makeup Wars bloggers each picked a favorite high end brand to share and maybe even convince you that their brand is the best. I chose Senna and the lovely ladies at Senna Cosmetics were kind enough to share some of the latest items. Lisa and I have reviewed a lot of Senna over the 5 years of our blog for several reasons.

1) We’ve been charmed by Senna for a dozen years. We started using it way before we began blogging. One of our biggest thrills was to meet and talk with Eugenia Weston at IMATS and have her personally recommend items for us.

2) Senna is an indie company owned by Eugenia Weston. She actually creates the products and doesn’t just put her name on something she’s bought.

3) Senna is cruelty free. Plus Senna Cosmetics are reasonably priced compared to so many of the higher end companies.

I’m going to share some of Senna Cosmetics newest products as well as long time favorites. For spring Senna is all about nude shades with their In the Mood for Nudes collection. The 5 main items in this collection are 4 matte eyeshadows and their Baja Matte Bronzer.

The Nude Matte eyeshadows are available in 4 shades. The difference in 3 of the shades is the undertone of them. All 3 of these are beautiful nudes to wear over your entire eye or in strategic places. What I love best about these is that my favorite under the brow shade was discontinued a few years ago and I’ve never found a replacement until now. It thrills me to have these 3 and these are getting daily use.

BLEND is the most neutral and is considered a neutral skin tone shade.

MOONLIGHT is a warm beige, it’s ivory on me with warmer slightly peach undertones.

ESSENCE is a creamy pastel peach.

NUDIST is a neutral brown that’s great for lids or crease.

Using these gives you a beautiful neutral eye or you can add in a darker shade for more definition or glitz. While these are matte eyeshadows they apply like a satin, they don’t look chalky, they just look smooth.

Whatever you do, don’t ignore your eyebrows. If anyone knows eyebrows it’s Senna since Eugenia Weston created one of the first and most famous eyebrow kits, the Form-A-Brow Kit. I have both a Brow Gel and a Brow Shaper Duo in use.

SENNA BROW FIX is available in 3 shades (clear, golden brown, taupe) to set your brow shape, color your brows and control them. It has tiny texturizing fibers in it to make your brows look fuller. If you have full enough brows then use this to set them and add a little more color. Or if you are like me, then use them over a pencil or brow powder to lock in the color and shape.

Senna Brow Duo in Brunette

Senna Shaping Brow Duo in Brunette

The Brow Shaping Duo also comes in 3 shades (Blonde, Brunette, Ebony) and is my preference. I’ve lost a lot of hair in my brows since my fall and I need the fullness and coverage this provides. The powder side is a micro fiber infused pressed powder and the pomade is a conditioning one. Brunette is a great match for me. My modus operandi is to apply the powder with the Brow Pro 40 brush, then apply the pomade over it. The combination of the two products intensifies the color as well as sets it in place. My brows last the entire day with this.

Senna Slipcover in Buff

Senna Slipcover in Buff

I raved before about Senna foundation since Lasting Illusion Foundation in Alabaster is one of my very favorite liquid foundations. Along comes Slipcover Foundation and it’s right up there with the best. Slipcover is a cream to powder foundation that comes in an amazing 18 different shades plus 3 duos if you change shades in different seasons or if you want to do some contouring. This oil free foundation applies like a dream with a foundation brush like Senna’s Foundation 39 or the wonderful Multi 24 brush. It then transforms into a semi-matte powder. So it’s one and done. I don’t need to set with a powder but it doesn’t look like a powder finish. It stays flawless and looks good all day on me. I love that Buff (porcelain) is so light and a color that blends perfectly on my skin.

Senna HD Eye Lift with Deluxe Fluff 600, Concealer 12 and Baby Face 21 brushes

Now that we have our eyes done, what about under our eyes? That’s where Senna’s HD Eye Lift comes into play. This used to be called Mineral Eye Lift which I’ve used before down to the pan. It’s been revamped and it’s still as great as ever. Now it contains HD light diffusing mineral pigments that help brighten your under eye area. It’s a subtle lift that helps brighten under eye darkness, set your concealer and it can also highlight any areas of your face. It contains Golden Seaweed to help stimulate collagen repair while you are wearing it. Call me sold.

Senna Baja Matte Bronzer swatch

Senna’s Baja Matte Bronzer is a sheer bronzer which is especially good for people who are very fair toned. It’s neutral enough that it will look good on most skin tones. I’ve used it half a dozen times and it’s never turned orangey on me. It’s recommended to use a powder brush with it but depending on how much color I want I prefer my Angled Blush brush or my Airbrush Face brush. This contains light-reflecting pigments which are said to diminish the look of imperfections. If I can wear this comfortably than anyone can! I love that there’s no sparkle in it.

I’m sure you can tell why Senna was my choice as soon as Makeup Wars decided on this topic. It’s a wonderful cruelty free, independent line created by a strong woman who is famous for being one of the top makeup artists in the world. I’m proud to share Senna Cosmetics with you. Because this review is so long, I’m continuing it later today to share some more products. — Marcia

Starting the new year with Japonesque Velvet Touch Foundation

Japonesque Velvet Touch Foundation

Japonesque Velvet Touch Foundation

I wonder if most makeup fanatics are as crazy about foundation as I am. I hadn’t heard about the Japonesque Velvet Touch Foundation prior to receiving it for review but I was excited to try this out. When I opened the box I was surprised to see the small spatula inside and was eager for a peek.

Japonesque Velvet Touch Foundation open

Japonesque Velvet Touch Foundation open

As you can see it’s a solid foundation. It doesn’t move in the jar. I either scoop it out and put a small amount on my metal spatula or the back of my hand or I dampen a foundation brush and pick up the foundation that way.

Velvet Touch Foundation

Velvet Touch Foundation

The reason is clear why it’s named Velvet Touch once you use it. It gives an airbrushed look to my face when I buff it in with a flat top foundation brush. The most interesting thing is that you’d expect to get a heavy cosmetic look but that’s not the case at all. Instead this is actually a lightweight foundation but one with good coverage. I don’t look cakey at all.

Japonesque BB/CC Cream Brush

Japonesque BB/CC Cream Brush

While I don’t have this brush, the Japonesque BB/CC Cream Brush is exactly like the one I do have. I’ll spritz it with a little water (Evian, Vichy) and pick up the color right from the jar. If I’m not in the mood for that then I’ll use my Beauty Blender sponge.

This is sold at Ulta ($36) and the reviews are mostly great. The only confusion I have with them is that some people love it for oily skin while another doesn’t. My skin is normal and confused. Dry areas and oily t-zone. It’s a great finish for my skin.

The difficult part is picking a color online. Ulta has a great chart to help you choose but I still found the Fair Shade 1 to be on the yellow side for me.

I’m very happy to have Japonesque Velvet Touch in my arsenal of foundation since it’s a nice choice especially when I need a little more coverage. It looks natural on, it feels great and it lasts well for me during the day. Japonesque has done us a favor by adding color cosmetics to their line. Not only can you use the coupons from Ulta ($3.50 off or 20%) since it’s not in the prestige section but you can easily find it. I can’t wait to explore more from this brand. What Japonesque cosmetics have you tried? I’d love to hear recommendations. — Marcia

Pack Up with Pixi Beauty

PIXI BEAUTY is becoming one of my favorite treats. The brand is the brainchild of Petra Strand, a mom and a makeup artist. She has created cosmetics, skincare, nail polish and tools that are high quality yet don’t hit the wallet hard. When I was sent a few travel size small items to test I decided to pick out things I’d choose for travel. (Items with a * were sent, the rest are wishes or self purchases.)

Pixi Beauty can be found at Target stores, some on target.com and all on the Pixi Beauty website. I think their website is the best place to shop personally. I’m spotlighting products I have or want from Pixi today.

1.  PIXI PRIMERS – Pixi Beauty has 3 different primers so any kind of skin worries you have can be covered completely. I’ve been using Flawless & Poreless* – they named this baby well. It’s a cream color primer that helps with fine lines and pores. The texture is creamy but it dries down quickly leaving my skin smooth. Flawless & Poreless has no shine plus it helps control shine. There is also Flawless Beauty Primer which I have from one of the subscription boxes I purchase. This one adds a little golden glow without sparkle. It might be too light for a lot of people but for us fair ones it’s just right. The mini is $9 on Pixi’s site. Another mini that you can find on their site is the Redness Reducing Primer which is tinted green and will help mask any redness you have. If I owned the Redness Reducing I’d use that on my red cheeks and nose with one of the others elsewhere for a perfecto complexion!

2.  CREAM TO POWDER FOUNDATION, FLAWLESS VITAMIN VEIL  *-  I love that Pixi has this in a mini size. First of all you can try this for just $9 to see if it’s right for you. Second, it’s a double duty product. Third it’s tiny enough for travel and for touch up. It comes in three shades (Fair, Medium, Tanned). I have the Fair and it’s very fair. All you pale ladies might want to check this shade out. It has a very light coverage – almost a no makeup look – but it does even out skintone and hide imperfection. If you need something heavy duty then this isn’t for you but if you want your your skin to be protected with vitamins, minerals and skin-enhancing ingredients with a light coverage this might just be the right product. I’ve been using this as a concealer too (double duty) depending on the day.

3. MESMERIZING MINERAL EYESHADOW PALETTES * – I have two of Pixi’s eyeshadow palettes and the pigmentation in them is amazing. You’d never believe that these are $12 each. I’ve reviewed Emerald Glow which is one of 5 current palettes. The rich colors that play well for day or night are beautiful. The colors remind me of sand and surf. I’ve got my eye on Rich Gold with its gold, khaki and moss green shades, that has me craving more Pixi Beauty.

4. SHEA BUTTER LIP BALM – While I don’t have any of these (yet) Lisa does (review here) and she raves at how wonderful they feel on her lips and the color it adds. I’ve got my eye on Pixi Pink which is described as a “fresh vivid pink”. I don’t like heavy lips in summer so this would give me color, hydration and only cost $8.

Ripe Raspberry Lip Balm

5. ENDLESS SILKY EYE PEN – The first time I bought from Pixi Beauty it was due to the raves for their eye pencils. People go nuts for these and rightly so. The colors are beautiful, they glide on and they last so well on my eyes. Right now there’s an Endless Silky Eye Kit that’s LE and you really really want it. For $18 you will get pencils in BlackNoir, DeepPlum, BlackCocoa, SageGold, OysterGlow and a Custom Sharpener. A single Pixi Silky Eye Pen is $12 so getting these 5 is excellent. And the small size is great for your travel plans even if they are just out for dinner!

6.  SHEER CHEEK GEL – As a blogger who adores cream and gel stains, these are up my alley. Petra says “I love this gel blush dabbed on cheeks and lips, it creates a translucent, soft and coordinated flush.” I know I’d love Rosy which is a berry-rose. The swatch makes me drool.

7. PIXI NAIL POLISH * – I’m having a ball with Pixi Polish. These small $8 bottles apply beautifully and really last. I’ve previously reviewed the spring collection of Oh So Orange (my husband’s favorite), Lime Lustre and Sizzling Sunshine.

Today I’m going to share the July color of the month: Fuchsia Dew. This stunner is a fuchsia pink with gold glitter. It isn’t a textured polish though it almost looks like one. On me it looked very neon and very attention getting. While my pictures are on my nails, not my horrible toes, this makes the perfect pedicure. I’m dying for their new Olive Gold. It shall be mine.

There you go – what I have and what I want. The more I look at the Pixi Beauty website, the more I know I’m going to be ordering a few things and you should be joining me! What are your favorites from Pixi? Will you be packing with Pixi? — Marcia

p.s. If you spend $30 by August 4th you’ll get a free Mini Flawless Beauty Primer.

It’s lovely being a Beauty Addicts foundation fan with Face2Face

Beauty Addicts Face2Face Foundation

Beauty Addicts Face2Face Foundation

There’s something quite fascinating about a company whose motto is “Beauty made simple” that actually adheres to that motto. Beauty Addicts is a cosmetic company that has been around for quite a while yet they don’t have a million items. They keep it simple by creating ONE foundation, one tinted moisturizer, one concealer. Their goal isn’t to flood the market but to improve the market.

Technically Beauty Addicts Face2Face Foundation is a crème to powder foundation. I say technically because it never becomes powdery. Instead it gives me a soft slightly dewy appearance. There’s nothing dry or chalky about it. It’s a lightweight formula even though Beauty Addicts says that it’s full coverage. I find that the coverage is more medium than full though I can build it up.

Beauty Addicts Face2Face Foundation in 01 and 02

Beauty Addicts Face2Face Foundation in 01 and 02

Beauty Addicts Face2Face Foundation comes in 7 shades. I was sent Shades 01 and 02 to test. I probably can wear them both well on my fair (MAC NW15) skin but as soon as I applied Shade 01 I was sold. It’s a great match for my neutral to cool toned skin. Shade 02 would be great for people who have warmer undertones than I do (MAC NC15-20).

While it comes with a sponge, the magic for me is when applying it with a foundation brush. I have tried it with a variety of brushes but almost always go for the Urban Decay Optical Blurring Brush. It picks up the perfect amount of foundation and blends it seamlessly on my skin. The sponge is great if you carry the foundation around since it fits in the compact perfectly.

Even though I haven’t worn Beauty Addicts crème foundation in hot weather, it has survived cold, cool, windy and warm weather. It’s even stood up to a few hot flashes. Face2Face Foundation contains Vitamin A and E plus Green Tea in order to soothe and protect. It also has Dermaxyl for hydration and something called Advanced Microsphere Technology to help diminish the look of fine lines. All in all I’d say that Beauty Addicts Face2Face Crème to Powder Foundation has surpassed all my expectations of it. I’m truly enjoying wearing this foundation every day.

Have you ever used anything from Beauty Addicts? Now that I’ve started, I don’t want to stop! — Marcia

Review and giveaway: Youngblood Mineral Radiance Creme Powder Foundation

Youngblood Mineral Radiance Creme Powder Foundation in Neutral

I remember when I owned just one foundation.  The concept of owning an arsenal of different textures, different coverage options, and even different shades had never occurred to me.  I used my one bottle of foundation – the same type, the same shade – every single day.  (I also only had one eyeshadow and one lipstick, but that’s another story for a different post!)

What I realize now is that my skin is not the same every day.  It alternates between being a very good girl to being a very, very bad girl.  Some days it’s dry and needs a moisturizing foundation.  Some days it’s oily and needs a matte foundation. Some days my skin tone is extremely uneven or broken out and I need more coverage. And I never know what it’s going to be until I get up and look in the mirror.

So now, I have a fluid foundation, a cream foundation, a powder foundation, a tinted moisturizer, and a cream to powder foundation sitting in my foundation drawer like good little soldiers, ready to be called out to battle whatever skin issues I have that day.

mirror and sponge included!

Youngblood’s Mineral Radiance Creme Powder Foundation ($56) is always in my foundation drawer.  It’s a 2 in 1 foundation that provides the coverage of a cream foundation without the heavy feel that sometimes happens with thicker formulas. It’s a great moisturizing option that keeps skin smooth and hydrated. It comes in a chic round compact with a circular mirror, the foundation, and a separate sponge. I love that the sponge doesn’t  sit right on the foundation. Using a sponge and then storing it on top of a foundation quickly becomes a major bacteria party.

Neutral up close

The foundation has a solid texture with a creamy feel and slip that dries down to a powder finish. To apply, I use the sponge and pat it on from the middle of my face outward. The sponge gives a great finish, although I like to end by placing my hands over my face for a moment. The body heat from my hands sets the foundation and helps it sort of meld in, giving a natural looking appearance.

Neutral swatch

The shade that works great for me is the cool toned Neutral.  There are  seven other shades from which to choose, although I find the swatches appear lighter online  than the shades are in person.

My Youngblood FOD

You know, I wouldn’t wear the same outfit every single day, and I won’t ever go back to wearing the same foundation every single day. Build yourself a full wardrobe of foundations, and your face will thank you for it. You can start by entering our giveaway for a brand new Youngblood Mineral Radiance Creme Powder Foundation in Honey, which is a neutral medium shade.  If it’s not your shade, you can always be an awesome friend and gift it to someone you love!

This giveaway is open through Sat. Nov. 24 at 11:59 p.m. EST.  It’s also open internationally!  The winner will be picked by Rafflecopter and will be checked for veracity. Entering is easy, so do it now – and good luck!!  – Lisa
