Summer fun with nails

This week for Makeup Wars we are sharing some favorite polishes for summer. This was actually a last minute decision for the group so I gathered pictures of the polishes I’ve been wearing up until today to share with you. None of the ones I’ve been wearing are new but they are ones I love and hope you do too.

COLOR CLUB HALO HUES in MISS BLISS

The Halo Hues polish collections are fabulous polishes. Not only do they wear beautifully but they are more holographic than any other polish brand I’ve ever bought.

Color Club Miss Bliss on Polarbelle’s blog

In 2013 I did a guest post for Polarbelle and wore this polish and I’m wearing it now as I type.

It’s still available on ebay and if you love shiny pink holo nails then you’ll adore this polish.

INGLOT MAMMA MIA (number 220)

I wore this over the July 4th weekend and everyone loved not only how pretty it is but how it fit the holiday. I swear I saw it for sale but I can’t find it now. But if you can get your hands on it, it’s a stunner with beautiful shimmer.

I need to get my hands on some Inglot Nail Enamel now that I’ve seen how perfectly this wore for a week.

LILLIAN EVE NAVY BEEN BETTER

Lillian Eve is a small indie nail company with a tiny collection right now. I’ve had Navy Been Better for a long time and finally got around to wearing it around Memorial Day.

Lillian Eve Navy Been Better

I gravitate towards blues like this, it’s not really navy except in certain lights. It’s very satiny and wore perfectly for a week with just a bit of wear where it wraps around the nail.

CND BECKONING BEGONIA VINYLUX

When I was moving I wanted a polish that would last 2 weeks so I turned to CND Vinylux. Beckoning Begonia has an infinitesimal amount of shimmer to it. It looks a little more shimmery in the bottle than on my nails. So while I was disappointed in that, I wasn’t disappointed in the way this lasted through packing and unpacking 1,234,567 boxes.

ESSIE ARUBA BLUE

I can’t tell you how many weeks I sat and looked at Aruba Blue in the nail polish racks of my nail tech. Finally I had to wear it. It’s fitting for my affinity for blue and this made me wish I was back in Aruba.

LAUREN B ROSE BOWL

Last but not least is Lauren B Rose Bowl because I love red all year long. This is another brand that is fabulous and Rose Bowl is a perfect example of the beauty of their polishes.

I’m ready for more pastels now and I have a set of Julie G polishes waiting in the wings for my next nail polish post. I can’t wait to wear them. What’s on your agenda for polish this summer?  —  Marcia

What polishes do you love for fall?

It’s Top Ten Tuesday time and it’s all about Fall nail polishes, a topic I treasure. I’m a nail polish fanatic even though I can barely paint a straight line. But I am mad about all the fall colors and determined to wear a different one each week. Here are 12 polishes that have been in my rotation lately and all are pure love! top fall nail polishes

There are 4 brands I’ve been concentrating on wearing: Sally Hansen Complete, Color Club Oil Slicks, KBShimmer’s fall collection and Faby Lacquer. I have nothing but love for these babies.

I love this palette for fall. One thing I’m missing is a brown shimmer so I need to start looking through my polishes or else buy one soon. Thanksgiving needs a brown shimmer!

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Maasai Red, Midnight Affair, Rose Glass

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Maasai Red, Midnight Affair, Rose Glass

SALLY HANSEN COMPLETE SALON MANICURE worked with the designers of NYFW to create polishes that were just right for the fashions being shown on the runway. Maasai Red was developed with Tracy Reese; Midnight Affair was created for Prabal Gurung this year and Rose Glass was one of three polishes commissioned by Rodarte for their fall fashion show. I’ll have more on these polishes but these are wonderful to apply, great to wear, and the colors are beautifully pigmented. (More to come tonight.)

KBShimmer Soul Deep, Dark & Twisty, Fig-Get About It

KBShimmer Soul Deep, Soul Deep with Dark & Twisty over it, Dark & Twisty, Fig-Get About It

I can’t get enough of KBSHIMMER Nail Polish and the Fall 2015 collection is a good example of why this is true. Lisa and I were able to review all 12 shades available and they are fall-abulous. My three favorites are Soul Deep, Dark & Twisty, and Fig-Get About It. These polishes last and last on me and never lose their fabulous shine or color. I once wore a KBShimmer Polish for 8 weeks and other than super long nails the color looked perfect. (I don’t want to wear a color for 8 weeks again which means I don’t want to break my leg again.)

Faby Nail Lacquer in Miss Scarlet I Suppose and Velvet Touch

Faby Nail Lacquer in Miss Scarlet I Suppose and Velvet Touch

FABY NAIL LACQUER isn’t a brand that you see mentioned often which is a shame. These polishes are terrific. They last for an infinitely long time on my nails and the colors stay vibrant. Miss Scarlet I Suppose is a metallic red that will carry me through to the spring. Velvet Touch is a great fall color with its deep purple/burgundy tones. When the winds are blowing Velvet Touch seems just the thing but I like to also put on a coat of something sparkly like KBShimmer Dark & Twisty after a few days to make the sun shine.

Color Club Oil Slick polishes in (clockwise from left) Sorry Not Sorry, Ice Breaker, We’ll Never Be Royals, and It’s Raining Men

COLOR CLUB POLISHES from the OIL SLICK Collection totally grabbed my eye. I had to buy them when I saw them. They are like entertainment because everywhere you go you see a different color. Just walking down the hall last night, wearing It’s Raining Men, I started seeing teal, then navy, then purple. Right now I’m seeing a tealed cobalt which then switched to a royal blurple. These polishes use Trichrom Technology to give them a multi-hued effect. Each is unique. I’ve worn 3 of my 4 and can’t wait to wear Ice Breaker since it’s a grey, teal, dusty blue. Shade shifting at its best.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Wantable

You’ve heard me rave over and over about the Wantable subscription boxes. That’s because it’s the best of the best. There is not a subscription company around that customizes a box to your exact preferences – other than Wantable that is. This month I was fortunate enough to receive the November box to review although I have been a subscriber since early in 2013.

Wantable November (from wantable.com)

Wantable November (from wantable.com)

You’ve heard the spiel before so I’ll keep it short: you take a very accurate questionnaire that determines your loves, likes and dislikes. The questionnaire even goes into color and formula preferences. Every box that’s sent out is then customized to what you like. There’s not that much crossover in boxes although there is some. My loves include eyeliner, eyeshadow, nail polish, tools and complexion products. My dislikes are bronzer and (for now) highlighter. Just before the box was sent I redid my questionnaire to change things up.

My November 2013 Wantable Subscription box

My November 2013 Wantable Subscription box

For November they sent me only items on my LOVE list! What more can I ask for? Face Stockholm for face, Starlooks and GirlActik for eyes and Color Club for nails. Every single one of these products will be used and savored.

FACE Stockholm Correcter Quad in Light – let’s start with the fact that I love the FACE Stockholm brand and get excited about products from them. This Corrector Quad is something I’ve wanted for a long time. I’ve seen them by other brands but for some reason never bought one. Silly me.

FACE Stockholm Correcter Quad

FACE Stockholm Correcter Quad

FACE Stockholm Correcter Quad

FACE Stockholm Correcter Quad

The texture of each of these is terrific, they are soft and easy to blend. FACE Stockholm Correcter Quad comes in 4 colors (tone, light, medium and dark) and since my profile told Wantable that I’m fair, they picked the perfect one. There are two shades that I can use as correctors and concealers: a cool slightly pink and a warm slightly yellow. The green is to counteract redness and the darker beige is good for me for some contouring as well as helping with imperfections. This costs $32 and isn’t a product you’ll find discounted so it’s truly a $32 value. (A monthly subscription box is $36 BTW.)

GirlActik Beauty Eye Glaze in Fierce – this is my very first GirlActik product which makes it especially fun. In my profile I wrote that I love cream eyeshadows, even better. Fierce is a beautiful dark brown/bronze with a slight red undertone and some sparkles. The red though is understated so it doesn’t give rabbit eyes and the sparkles are very subtle. I couldn’t wait to wear this. Since the color is so intense I just dabbed 3 dots on my eyelid and then blended with a brush. On my browbone I wore a Vanilla cream shadow from another brand. I didn’t use primer and it didn’t matter. It looked perfect throughout the day. ($18)

Starlooks Kohl Eye Pencil in Obsidian – if you read the BIZ then you know that I really like Starlooks products and I love eyeliners. Obsidian is a matte black in their Kohl category. I now have at least one eyeliner from all the Starlooks categories since I just received a Gem liner, I’ve got several regular eyeliners and now this kohl one. Happiness is eyeliner! ($12)

Color Club Nail Polish in Feverish – After my great experience with the Color Club Holographic nail polishes this summer I’ve become a Color Club lover. The polishes are terrific and last very well on me. Feverish is a dark reddish burgundy cream and is a great winter weather shade. ($8)

If Wantable had come to my house to look at my collection they’d be able to see how perfect these choices are. They even included a cute little Victoria Soap sample that contains lanolin. This box adds up to $70 which pays for the subscription plus ($36 subscription, $40 for one month).

Now for something really fun for December – they have 3 Holiday boxes that you can check out right HERE. Each set contains the same brands but different colors.

We’ve chosen the following six gorgeous products in three color palettes to carry you through the holiday season in style!

Top Ten Tuesday – favorites for summer

Starting this week I have something new for you to enjoy. Every other Tuesday will be Top Ten Tuesday. Each week will be a different topic with mostly just lists. Like Makeup Wars, a group of bloggers will be linking to each other so you can see what others like for each list. Compare, contrast, go shopping! And enjoy.

This week’s TOP TEN list is favorite summer items. Hopefully I won’t have too many repeats from Makeup Wars or other posts but if I do it’s because they are only fabulous! And please remember that things change. What’s Top Ten today may be off the list in a week though I doubt it.  — Marciatop 10 summer eye lip cheek

    1. Tarte LipSurgence – these don’t melt on me or in my purse. I like the sheer ones best.
    2. Eddie Funkhouser liquid eyeliner – while I haven’t reviewed this yet, I love it. It’s black, it’s waterproof and it applies so easily.
    3. Makeup Geek gel eyeliners – I love gel eyeliners and don’t want to be without a stash of them. The ones from Makeup Geek are so well priced and they really last.
    4. Anastasia Lash Genius – Lash Genius makes any mascara water resistant and when you are the “hot flash queen” this is a life saver.
    5. MAC Bare My Soul eyeshadow palette – I can’t stop wearing this. The colors are right up my alley. I can do daytime looks with it, I can deepen the colors and do a more sultry eye, and I can add other colors like Painted Earth Yellow Diamond to make it more versatile.top 10 summer face
    6. It Cosmetics CC Cream – the review is coming for this but let me tell you that I’m in love. It’s CC Cream has a beautiful coverage and makes me feel like my skin is perfect
    7. BB cream from 3 Lab – I have a lot of BB Creams and it’s hard to pick a favorite but the coverage of 3 Lab’s is so amazing and it doesn’t have a fragrance like my Asian ones
    8. Youngblood cream blush especially Taffeta and Tropical Glow – I wear these all year but I really love them in summer. They have a glow to them that makes me feel younger (and that’s really a trick).top 10 summer twistband
    9. Twistbands – I only wish I had the type of hair that looks good all the time but when I’m hot or have a hot flash I need to get my hair up ASAP. I’ve bought oodles of these and like that I can get them in all the colors I love.top 10 summer color club
    10. Color Club Halo Hues Holographic nail polishes – I love holographic polish and Color Club came out with 6 new ones. These look beautiful in sun or shade but they really dazzle in the sun.

Wantable for March 2013 – a box that will make you wantabuy!

Wantable Robert Jones collection

Wantable Robert Jones collection

I’m way overdue to tell you about Wantable’s subscription boxes. I was lucky enough to be sent one in January but put it aside and shamefully forgot to write about it – then life happened (mom in the hospital, vacation, etc) and it slipped my mind. But it didn’t slip my mind that much since I knew that purchasing one for my blog partner Lisa’s birthday would make her thrilled. She’s got an upcoming review about the Wantable Subscription service and how it works but I’m beating her to the punch with a box you can buy right now.wantable march robert jones

In general Wantable boxes are $40 each or $36 for a subscription. You don’t know what you are getting BUT you fill out an amazing profile and list what you DO want and what you DON’T want. For March though they also have a curated box by the incredible Robert Jones as a choice. I have several cosmetic books by Robert Jones that I’ve bought over the years so I was instantly attracted to the idea of buying this box. But when I saw their teaser picture and Cailyn gel eyeliner was one of the products, I was sold! I purchased this and a future subscription without a doubt in my mind.

March Makeup Box

  • 5 full-size premium makeup products.
  • Hand-selected by makeup artist Robert Jones.
  • Expert application advice for each product.
  • Free shipping and free returns.
  • 100% satisfaction guaranteed.
  • Items shown are the products you will receive in the March Pop Box.
  • Choose this box or personalize your own with our style quiz!

Here’s a list of what’s in the box: Cailyn Gel Eyeliner in Black ($21), Manna Kadar Blush in High Five ($19), Peepers by Darla Eyeshadow in Betty Jane ($18), 29 Cosmetics Dew Lip Gloss in Napa Sunset ($24), Color Club Nail Polish in He Loves Me ($8) plus a sample packet of 29 Cosmetics skincare. That’s $90 worth of cosmetics that I paid $36 for. And the best part is that I like them all!!!

Cailyn Gel Eyeliner in Black – I’ve already reviewed this in Green and I love these long lasting liners. This was what got me excited about buying this Wantable box in the first place. I was paying just a little more than the liner alone and getting all of these other products. Black needs no description but it is a super dark black and a super long lasting liner.

Manna Kadar blush in High Five – I’ve only reviewed Manna Kadar Cosmetics once and it wasn’t for color products. I’ve read great things about Manna’s cosmetics so having this pretty peachy pink blush is terrific. It goes on smoothly, lasts long and is just plain pretty. I don’t see this particular shade sold on the Manna website so maybe it’s exclusive to Wantable.

Peepers by Darla eyeshadow in Betty Jane – this adorably named company is new to me. It’s the creation of a mother and daughter team who’ve been in the beauty business and in the natural farming business for years. Betty Jane is a cool toned light green with golden shimmer.

29 Cosmetics DEW Grape Seed Age Protecting™ Lip Gloss Collection SPF 15 in Napa Sunset – this is a new brand to me but it’s not a new brand. Neiman Marcus carries 29 Cosmetics so I’ve always been intrigued by the brand but didn’t want to buy sight unseen. This very pretty gloss looks almost neon in my pictures but it’s actually a shimmery sheer shade of a nectar rose. It’s not in the least scary. Plus it works well with the other shades in this box.

Color Club nail polish in He Loves Me – I haven’t worn this beautiful summery pink polish yet. It’s not sheer which is good since that’s not my favorite finish. It’s a cream finish that I know I’m going to enjoy this summer.

I’m really happy with this Wantable box. I do love subscription boxes and I think this box is the cat’s meow. There are always name brand full size cosmetics in each box. You don’t get that with other boxes – especially 5 full size items – you might be lucky to get one that may or may not work for you. With Wantable and your profile you are bound to get items you love.

I’ll write up my previous box soon so you can have an idea of what a random box is like. Plus you’ll be seeing my reviews of future boxes since I have signed up for my subscription. Have you heard of Wantable before? I think you’d like it. I know I do. — Marcia

What’s in the February Birchbox box? Let’s see

Birchbox for February 2013

Birchbox for February 2013

feb 13 birchbox cardEach month that I open my Birchbox I wonder if it’s worth the $10 I pay for it. It’s the least expensive of all the subscription boxes that I buy but I have to remind myself often that they only send samples. The boxes that you’ll see are different from person to person. What I notice is that people who’ve subscribed for less time than I have sometimes get the items a month or two after I receive them in my box. February’s box is called Red Carpet Ready since it was the month of award shows galore. With my particular box I guess I’ll be red carpet ready by having shiny moisturized hair, brightened skin, a soft tint to even my collection and a crimson manicure.

Here’s what February had to offer

Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque packets

Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque packets

feb 13 birchbox kerastase backI received two packets of Kerastase Chroma Riche Hair Masques. While I haven’t tried these I definitely will in a few months when my Brazilian Blowout has grown out more. Kerastase is a wonderful brand that I used to use exclusively so this will be good to try. Chroma Riche has a built-in UV filter that helps keep color from fading. A full size jar is $61.

Vasanti Brighten Up

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint

Unfortunately I’ve gotten several of these Jouer Moisture Tints in subscription boxes. Why don’t they send me something like a lip gloss or eyeshadow instead? Are you listening Birchbox and Jouer??? This one goes in the upcoming giveaway box since I already own it.

See this? It’s gone!! But it was terrific when it popped itself into my mouth.

The February box is a little scant but everything in the box is useful and the most important part – they didn’t include a fragrance! I’m so sick of those mini fragrance samples so when I noticed there wasn’t one in the box I was happy for that alone.

Disclosure: I pay for my own Birchbox but I’ve linked to my referral code which would get me points towards possible products.

Makeup Wars shows a favorite holiday look

It’s holiday time and some of the Makeup Wars bloggers are ready to celebrate. Today’s Makeup Wars is all about our holiday looks. Everyone loves looking extraordinary on special days and December is filled with those. Since I’m babysitting on New Year’s Eve (yes!! our first sleepover!!) my holiday look took place at a recent party.

As usual I started with my eyes and for this party I pulled out an eyeshadow that I don’t wear that often Makeup Geek Envy. This isn’t an everyday color for me but I so love this blue-green that I was excited to have an occasion to wear it.makeup geek envy panmakeup geek envy finger panI applied it very heavily along my upper lashline and it was very intense so out came my MAC 219 brush and I started smudging. I blended upwards so that I had the darkness along my lashes and an ombre look as it went up. My favorite browbone shade is the (unfortunately discontinued) Rock & Republic Skintone because it’s absolutely my skintone. I lined with MAC Dark Envy Fluidline and used Diorshow Iconic mascara. I absolutely loved this eye look and felt sexy – a rarity for me! makeup geek teal eye lookmakeup geek teal eyes
After applying my eyes and cleaning up all these little blips of black you see, I applied Tarte Waterproof Maracuja Waterproof Concealer along with an eye cream. My foundation of the evening was one I need to review still, Sunday Riley Creme Radiance Breathable Ageless Foundation. I then used my beloved Mally Evercolor Poreless Face Defender to set my foundation and keep the oilies at bay. sunday riley foundation jarMy blush and lips had to be subtle since my eyes were dramatic. Subtle lips aren’t a problem for me – I can go eeny, meeny, miny, moe with my eyes closed and pick out a YLLB lipstick. For this look though it was important that my blush and lips were in sync. I recently bought my first ever Dior lipstick. I had resisted them for so long because of fragrance but I went to a Dior counter and the amazing makeup artist introduced me to Dior Addict Lipstick. A Dior lipstick with no fragrance. Now I can be a part of the ‘ladies club’. The shade she picked for me is 535 Talleur Bar. This is a sheer mauve that is only slightly darker than my lips. It’s extremely moisturizing but because it’s sheer it wears off quickly. For blush I combined two Youngblood cream blushes – Taffeta (rose iridescence) and Pink Champagne (warm pink).

Last but not least I applied It Cosmetics Hello Light, the most amazing illuminating powder I’ve ever tried. I feel magical when wearing this. A true review is upcoming by I love that this powder gives my face a luminosity that isn’t glittery or shimmery, that looks natural while illuminating my face so that I glow. it cosmetics hello light powder qvcit hello light back

My nails are an important part of my cosmetic life and I had fun with this. I was wearing a beautiful emerald polish from Color Me Monthly: Emerald City (review upcoming). To spice it up I wore Color Club’s Snow Flakes polish over it. My nails looked like twinkling Christmas lights on a tree.  colormemonthly green and colorclub nails2
