Summer fun with nails

This week for Makeup Wars we are sharing some favorite polishes for summer. This was actually a last minute decision for the group so I gathered pictures of the polishes I’ve been wearing up until today to share with you. None of the ones I’ve been wearing are new but they are ones I love and hope you do too.

COLOR CLUB HALO HUES in MISS BLISS

The Halo Hues polish collections are fabulous polishes. Not only do they wear beautifully but they are more holographic than any other polish brand I’ve ever bought.

Color Club Miss Bliss on Polarbelle’s blog

In 2013 I did a guest post for Polarbelle and wore this polish and I’m wearing it now as I type.

It’s still available on ebay and if you love shiny pink holo nails then you’ll adore this polish.

INGLOT MAMMA MIA (number 220)

I wore this over the July 4th weekend and everyone loved not only how pretty it is but how it fit the holiday. I swear I saw it for sale but I can’t find it now. But if you can get your hands on it, it’s a stunner with beautiful shimmer.

I need to get my hands on some Inglot Nail Enamel now that I’ve seen how perfectly this wore for a week.

LILLIAN EVE NAVY BEEN BETTER

Lillian Eve is a small indie nail company with a tiny collection right now. I’ve had Navy Been Better for a long time and finally got around to wearing it around Memorial Day.

I gravitate towards blues like this, it’s not really navy except in certain lights. It’s very satiny and wore perfectly for a week with just a bit of wear where it wraps around the nail.

CND BECKONING BEGONIA VINYLUX

When I was moving I wanted a polish that would last 2 weeks so I turned to CND Vinylux. Beckoning Begonia has an infinitesimal amount of shimmer to it. It looks a little more shimmery in the bottle than on my nails. So while I was disappointed in that, I wasn’t disappointed in the way this lasted through packing and unpacking 1,234,567 boxes.

ESSIE ARUBA BLUE

I can’t tell you how many weeks I sat and looked at Aruba Blue in the nail polish racks of my nail tech. Finally I had to wear it. It’s fitting for my affinity for blue and this made me wish I was back in Aruba.

LAUREN B ROSE BOWL

Last but not least is Lauren B Rose Bowl because I love red all year long. This is another brand that is fabulous and Rose Bowl is a perfect example of the beauty of their polishes.

I’m ready for more pastels now and I have a set of Julie G polishes waiting in the wings for my next nail polish post. I can’t wait to wear them. What’s on your agenda for polish this summer?  —  Marcia

Top Ten glittery polishes and top coats

It’s Top Ten Tuesday time and this week we’re exploring glittery, shimmery polishes and top coats. With holidays and New Year’s this is the perfect time to show off the fun side of nail polish. Even if you don’t wear this to your workplace, these occasions are perfect to shine at all of your parties. I’ve chosen 10 in my collection and all but one are still available but I love it too much not to include it.
1418587443_img_20140309_183616-340x340KB SHIMMER PRISM BREAK – This is a shimmery though not glittery top coat. It’s wonderful for every shade of polish you own so it’s great to own. You can jazz up what you are already wearing with this subtle shimmer. I love it!!
1418587171_the_black_knight_lacquer_11142014BUTTER LONDON THE BLACK KNIGHT – I picked this up during one of Ulta’s BOGO sales and it’s gorgeous. It has a black base and then is loaded with black, pink, blue, and silver glitter. Very deluxe.
1418587012_ice_duo_lacquer_set_11172014BUTTER LONDON DOUBLE TAKE ICE DUO – This is on last call at Butter London. It contains 2 polishes. Bluecoat Nail Lacquer: an opaque, navy shimmer and Leccy Overcoat: a sheer, blue opal fleck overcoat. As striking as Bluecoat is, it’s Leccy that’s the star of the show. The opal fleck is beautiful over so many polishes year round. BL sent this and I instantly bought the red set (Fire) that they were selling last year.*

1418586852_vinylux-night-glimmerCND VINYLUX NIGHT GLIMMER  CND Vinylux are great polishes because you don’t need a base coat, only their top coat. They last one to two weeks. Night Glimmer is deceiving since it looks like a pretty brown in the bottle but there’s a subtle shimmer once applied.*
1418586802_vinylux-gilded-pleasureCND VINYLUX GILDED PLEASURE  There is no shimmer or glitter in this but it’s a gorgeous color for the holidays. It’s gold – it’s green – it’s brass – it’s gold again. I love the changes of this polish.*
1418586538_img_20140913_125205-180x180KB SHIMMER PINE-ING FOR YULE  Not only is this absolutely gorgeous but it’s KB Shimmer’s 2014 Toys for Tots Charity Polish ($4 of the $8.75 will be donated to Toys for Tots). This is a glitter top coat with evergreen triangle trees and red stars, there’s holographic silver and red glitters in this. It’s a stunner.*

1418586061_arsenic_black_square_4_grandeOCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) ARSENIC NAIL LACQUER is the true glitter in this group. It’s the most glittery polish I own. It’s New Year’s Eve in a bottle.*

1418585886_5042847609NUANCE GOLDSTONE is the polish I wore last year for New Year’s. A wonderful blogger sent this to me as a gift when I couldn’t find it. I love it because it’s gold but not garish. It’s a satin metallic. It doesn’t exactly fit today’s post but not everyone loves glitter so this is a great alternative.

1396315823_jammy_thumbBUTTER LONDON LOLLY aka JAMMY This polish had two names. When it was sent to me it had the name Lolly but online I believe it was called Jammy. Sadly this is discontinued but if you can find it, grab it. This sparkly red is wonderful. I love Butter LONDON polishes anyway but when you get a color like this it’s even better.*

butter LONDON Stroppy bottle with Lolly nails

1396315762_stroppy_thumbBUTTER LONDON STROPPY This is an OMG polish. It was in the LOLLY BRIGHT collection like Lolly aka Jammy but luckily this is still available. It’s a full coverage polish with bright purple flaring shimmers in gel-like base. This metallic shimmer polish is one of my all time favorites. *

So there I am – 10 polishes that range from metallic to shimmer to glitter. All gorgeous ones that wear well. Are any of these on your to buy list?  Move on to my fellow nail polish lovers to see what they have to share. — Marcia

CND Vinylux Modern Folklore Collection

I am a big fan of CND Vinylux Nail Polish, and the Modern Folklore Collection just cemented that superfan status.

CND Modern Folklore Collection

Modern Folklore has rich jewel tones and subtle shimmer inspired by ‘lavishly embroidered and beaded velvets and brocades’.  There are six shades in this collection, and Beyond Polish sent us three of them for review:  Crimson Sash, Plum Paisley, and Rose Brocade.

left to right: Rose Brocade, Plum Paisley, Crimson Sash

This is a 5-free gel hybrid nail polish.  You don’t need a base coat, but you do need the Weekly Top Coat, which is UV activated so it actually becomes harder as it is exposed to natural light.  The polish dries in about eight minutes, and it lasts for at least a week without chipping.

Crimson Sash is a warm shimmery burgundy red that is a beautiful seasonal shade.  The pigmentation is so awesome you can get away with just one coat of polish.

Plum Paisley is a real surprise – what a gorgeous plum with red and blue shimmers!  This polish is definitely a Dr. Jeckle/Mr. Hyde because the shimmer pops in direct light, yet it’s a shiny cool plum in indirect light.

Rose Brocade is a cherry red creme.  This is a bright, cheerful red that just makes me feel happy when I wear it.  I have a lot of red polishes, but nothing exactly like this one, which also makes me happy!

The Modern Folklore Collection is available at BeyondPolish.com in both the Vinylux ($5.95) and the Shellac ($13.95) formulas, about a third cheaper than what I find in other stores.  And right now, you can use the coupon code IGLOVE12 for 12% off your next order.  Take advantage of the code and get some of these perfect fall shades.  – Lisa

Beyond Polish brings you brands galore like Zoya & CND Vinylux (giveaway alert)

Beyond Polish is an online nail polish mecca. They carry brands that you already love like Zoya, Essie and China Glaze. But they also carry brands that are difficult to find like CND Vinylux, CND Shellac, Seche and Jessica. Then there are the brands that normally only professionals can get like LeChat, Harmony Gelish and ibd Just Gel Polish. It’s got the best of both worlds. And that world doesn’t stop with nail color, it continues with nail care like tools for nail art, glue, brushes and nail treatments.

We were happy to receive some polishes for review to show you the variety. Plus we are even happier that Beyond Polish is offering a giveaway.

LISA’S NAILS:

I like softer nail colors so I went pink, peach, then more pink! My first pink is CND Vinylux in Cake Pop ($5.95).

Cake Pop is a milky, light cream pink. It is a lovely, ultra-feminine and mod pink shade. The CND Vinylux polishes are formulated to last as least a week without chipping and it doesn’t need a base coat.

Zoya

Next I chose Zoya in Clara ($6.50). Clara is a medium warm peach with terracotta undertones, plus golden shimmer. Oh my this is pretty. This is a perfect shade for a beach vacation or a cruise.

My final pick is the ultimate girly shade, Zoya Angel ($6.50). Angel is a cool metallic pink with lilac undertones and frosty pink and silver shimmer. I think this is my PERFECT soft shade – stunningly pretty and modest at the same time.  I guess all my picks are soft and feminine…I’ll bet Marcia doesn’t go subtle with her shades!

MARCIA’S NAILS:

Well Lisa is right about her prediction. I don’t go subtle. After biting my nails and being embarrassed about my hands for most of my life I wear bright and bold polishes. I love my nails and love showing them off. You may never see my face but you’ll see my nails!

I chose two shades from Beyond Polish and both are absolutely perfect for me. The first is Zoya Cyma. I surely don’t have to tell you about the quality of Zoya polishes. They last beautifully on me and I love how up to date Zoya is with their collections. Cyma is a permanent polish from Zoya, it’s a bright metallic red that’s totally opaque in two easy to apply coats.

Look at that shine in the bottle! It applies exactly like that on my nails too. It’s not shimmery or glittery but it’s bright and beautiful. I think Rudolph would like this one to have helped guide the sleigh on Christmas Eve.

I’ll let you in on a little secret – Cyma is $6.50 on Beyond Polish yet $8 on Zoya’s website.

My next choice was CND Vinylux in the color that I had been dying for ever since I first reviewed VinyluxGilded Pleasure.

This is the kind of shade I go a little crazy over. It’s gold – it’s green – it’s brass – it’s gold again. Even my nail tech went crazy over Gilded Pleasure when she saw it.

Lisa told you that CND Vinylux doesn’t need a base coat but to get premium wear out of the Vinylux polishes you really should have their top coat. That’s what seals the color so that it lasts. At the end of one week my nails looked absolutely perfect.

CND VINYLUX wants to know what happens when a Lobster Roll meets Asphalt

I’m sure you’ve heard of CND Shellac since they turned the nail world on its head and made every creator of polish perk up. Shellac Nails by CND is a manicure that is cured by a special UV light to strengthen your nails while making the color last at least 2 weeks long. Now CND has topped their own creation and come out with VINYLUX Weekly Polish and Weekly Top Coat. These two products are designed to work together to give you the benefits of the original Shellac in a long wearing polish but without the UV light.

CND VINYLUX is a collection with 62 shades, many of which match a Shellac shade. What makes VINYLUX unique is that you totally skip a base coat. It works perfectly without a base and doesn’t stain nails. I was sent 2 shades, Lobster Roll and Asphalt, and wore them each for one week without any problems at all. Two coats of Vinylux, one coat of Weekly Top Coat, sit for about 10 minutes to let it dry and then out the door and on to life. They wore absolutely perfectly and when it was time to take them off, it was easy as pie; just use an acetone remover.

I love that the names of the two polishes I have are spot on for the colors. Lobster Roll does look like the shell of a lobster while Asphalt is a dark gray like its namesake.

LOBSTER ROLL is a pinky coral depending on the light I was in. It’s a vibrant and happy shade. I loved wearing it because it didn’t run too orange, it had enough pink in it to work well with my fair cool-toned skin. In some lights I saw more of the pink than in others. There was almost a fluorescent aspect to the polish but not in an immature way.

ASPHALT is a blue based charcoal. I was getting dressed one day and realized why I like the shade so much – it’s exactly the color that I picked for my vanity. My house is decorated in shades of gray so I felt like Asphalt was made specifically for me. When I pick things out for my house I’m very careful to choose the grays that don’t have green or beige as their undertones. I want a blue based gray and that’s what Asphalt is.

CND VINYLUX Weekly Top Coat

CND VINYLUX Weekly Top Coat

The brush on the bottles is a good width and easy to use, even for amateurs. The polish goes on thin but it spreads well. The second coat fills it out and is necessary for opacity. The top coat is shiny but not ultra shiny. If I weren’t reviewing though, I doubt I’d have even noticed that. The Weekly Top Coat is used specifically for these polishes. After 7 days I only had a little outer tip wear. Sometimes when I wear a dark color I’ll have some fading or see white peeping through but that was never the case with these CND polishes.

CND VINYLUX

CND VINYLUX

I really hope they come out with more glitzy polishes like the metallic Gilded Pleasures and shades with flecks like Pretty Poison.  I’ve got my eye on those two and hope to be wearing them sooner rather than later.

All in all, I like the CND VINYLUX polishes and the system. I felt confident that my nails were going to wear well. Besides wearing them for everyday, I’d pick one of these if I was traveling because of their longevity. Have you tried any of these polishes yet? If not I think it’s time to start checking them out! — Marcia

p.s.  CND doesn’t really want to know what happens, I just made that up.

p.s.s. If you want to see some of the colors from CND VINYLUX check out All Lacquered Up’s post; her chart shows the colors well and what finishes they have.

p.p.s.s. I love Lobster Rolls and now that I’ve written this post I want one desperately but there ain’t no such thang in Michigan!
