A little love and a little “eh” = Ipsy’s December bag

Ipsy December 2014

Ipsy December 2014

I had some higher hopes for IPSY for December that were dashed when this arrived. While I like the contents of this bag there’s not a lot that I love. No matter what though, I got my $10 worth like I do every month.

One of the fun things about IPSY is that not everyone gets the same bag. Now that can create some jealousy when you read other blogs and they received a shade you’d die for or a product you really wanted to try, but that’s okay.

This month’s cosmetic bag is just a plain black bag with a small Ipsy heart on the zipper. Nothing exciting but sometimes you want something not too showy. Inside was 3 deluxe samples and two full size items.

BWC Cleanser and Big Sexy Hair Spray

BWC Cleanser and Big Sexy Hair Spray

Beauty Without Cruelty is a great brand and it’s nice to be able to try their Facial Cleanser in the box. I have a big box of samples to pick from if I travel and this is a great size for any time I’d get away.

Style Sexy Hair 450 Protect is a hair protectant for blow drying and flat irons. It’s waterless so it also keeps hair safer from frizz. While I don’t love getting haircare all the time, this will come in handy when I’m refreshing my hair with my flat iron.

tarte deluxe lights, camera, action 4 in 2 mascara and NYC Butter Lip Balm

tarte deluxe lights, camera, action 4 in 1 mascara and NYC Butter Lip Balm

tarte deluxe lights, camera, action 4 in 1 mascara is probably my favorite item in the bag. I love mini sizes of mascara and I love tarte mascara. It’s a great way to try a new formula from any brand and even better when the brand is a favorite.

NYX Butter Lip Balm isn’t opened because it will end up in one of my giveaways. I’m one of the few that don’t really use NYX lip products, I just don’t like the scent. I know they get raves and most people would be thrilled to receive this.

Caitlyn Eye Polish in Orchid

Cailyn Eye Polish in Orchid

I was happy to see Cailyn Eye Polish in Orchid in my bag. But it turns out I’m not really crazy about the formula. I love the color (which isn’t very orchid in my book) but the application was patchy.

Caitlyn Eye Polish in Orchid

Cailyn Eye Polish in Orchid

Next time I’ll try it with a brush and not the spongy applicator since it didn’t allow it to apply smoothly. This is the most expensive item in the bag at $15.

While I should be raving about the bag so that you’ll use my referral link for extra points to subscribe, I have to be honest and say that Ipsy finished the year sort of on the down side. But here’s to 2015 and better products!! — Marcia

Top Ten Tuesday picks favorite colored eyeliners

It’s so nice to be back online and able to write a TOP TEN TUESDAY review. This week is especially fun since it’s about eyeliners and I can’t live without my eyeliner when I’m doing my makeup. There were two hard things for me with this week’s challenge – 1) I can’t get upstairs to take pictures so I left out some favorite brands like Urban Decay and 2) we aren’t “allowed” to include black or brown which is what I wear most days. But I am rising to the challenge and picking out my favorite colored liners.

1.  MAKEUP GEEK GEL LINERS – These are absolutely wonderful gel liners that I can’t recommend highly enough. The price tag of $8.99 makes these a steal because they are so long lasting and wear better than most gel eyeliners. I especially love Rave shown below because it’s a fabulous taupe. If you read the linked review you’ll see Electric, Mystic and Fame that are must haves if you love beautiful colors in gel eyeliners. *

2.  TARTE smolderEYES™ Amazonian clay waterproof liners  I can’t rave enough about tarte’s eyeliners. They make a variety of colors and styles. The two shown in the collage are Taupe and Rose Gold. Tarte comes out with new colors all the time and the best time to buy them is when they are part of a set, you’ll get shades you didn’t know you would fall in love with and at a great price. *

3. CAILYN LINEFIX GEL LINERS – I have a slew of these because they make shades that aren’t easily available from every line. These are $21 retail but I’ve yet to pay that. I’ve gotten them in subscription boxes and found them for less online. The collage shows black but the review shows the gorgeous green, blue and purple available.

4. PIXI BEAUTY ENDLESS SILKY EYE PENCILS – If you are seeking colored eyeliner pencils you can’t go wrong with Pixi Beauty. These are amazing. I have the set shown which contains Black Noir, Deep Plum, Black Cocoa, Sage Gold and Oyster Glow as well as singles like Cafe Gold. These glide on and are truly silky. The set is $18 so you get a nice variety but once you try it you’ll go on to buy the singles for $12 too.

5. MARC JACOBS BEAUTY HIGHLINER GEL CRAYONS – No I don’t have this set (yet) but it’s amazing and I want it. I do have individual colors of the Highliner Gel Crayons and they are something to aspire owning. These are so smooth and the colors are fabulous. This set is $45 and contains  O(vert) (forest green), Brown(out) (bronze with shimmer), Th(ink) (deep navy), (Plum)age (vivid purple), Blacquer (black), Sunset (golden bronze shimmer), Midnight in Paris (inky indigo blue). I have full sizes of Blacquer, Th(ink) and (Plum)age and those are $25 each so you can see what a gem this limited edition set is.

6. YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID EYE PENS – My favorite liquid eyeliners when it comes to colors out of the ordinary. There are 5 shades all together and I use the black and brown (marron) all the time but the other 3 are gems. Verde is an amazing green and Azul is the most unusual blue – it is not navy as you can see. I highly recommend these liquid liners and never want to be without Marron.

7.  TARINA TARANTINO HYPERLINER – The one shown is Ultra Violet and it’s a fabulous shade as well as a fabulous pencil eyeliner. Besides being beautifully pigmented, it’s long lasting. The secret to this is to watch Hautelook for sales on Tarina Tarantino since the products are so well priced. I’ve bought most of my TT products this way.

8. IT COSMETICS NO TUG WATERPROOF GEL EYELINER PENCILS – All 10 shades are shown in our review of these gel eyeliner pencils so you can see what beauties they are. IT Cosmetics continues to be one of my favorite lines and these beautiful eyeliners keep up the tradition.  These are my 5 and I am especially fond of Lucky Jade, Navy and Silk Taupe. It’s nice to have a navy that isn’t black so that makes it special. Plum (check review) is an especially pretty shade. *

The numbers stop at 8 but there are probably 2 dozen colored liners in here that I love. While black and brown may rule the day, colored liners should rule the night! Any that you love to recommend?

Makeup Wars tackles black eyeliners

Makeup Wars has decided to do a very basic, one might say boring, topic this week – black eyeliners. As a blogger with limited photography skills as well as no photoshop program, I can’t even make it pretty. But I can tell you about my favorites and it’s more than possible that you’ll learn about a liner or two that you’d want to try.

6 favorite black liquid eyeliners

6 favorite black liquid eyeliners

I live for eyeliner (in a cosmetic way that is). I feel dull and unfinished without it. It is an obsession of mine. This past year I’ve been on a quest for the perfect brown liquid eyeliner. In that quest though I found a lot of black liquid eyeliners, many more than brown.  Just about every brand makes a black liquid. But they are not created equal. Read about my experience with an Essence liner for proof of that.

6 favorite black liquid liners - it's the point of it all

6 favorite black liquid liners – it’s the point of it all

I want a liquid eyeliner with a firm point, one that is dark black, one that I can make a thin line with and one that doesn’t make my eyes water. I want a liner that lasts the entire day but that removes easily with eye makeup remover. I want one that doesn’t crack or disappear if my eyes tear up. Not too much to ask, is it? Let’s see which ones can meet my criteria.

EDDIE FUNKHOUSER Ultra Definition Eye Lining Stylus is the one that started it all for me. It wasn’t my first black liquid eyeliner. I’d tried many. But it made me stand up and take notice. Here’s what I said before and it stands to this day: “This doesn’t fade or smudge, it lasts through even my major hot flashes, it doesn’t migrate, and it’s so black that it’s blacker than black. It practically applies itself, it’s that easy to use.” I first got it as a PR sample and I’ve since bought it so I won’t be without. ($10.99)

FACE STOCKHOLM PRECISION LIQUID EYELINER is the first black liquid liner I reviewed on Beauty Info Zone. I remember when I received it from the company and how excited I was. I use this often still and it’s as precise as the day the first day. The nib of the pen hasn’t broken down at all. It’s still as perfect as in its early life. ($36)

YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID LINER IN NOIR is the newest addition to my collection. I am blown away by the Youngblood Eye Liquid Liner Pens. They come in 5 shades which are all great. Marron, the brown, is holy grail for me – the best brown liquid eyeliner I’ve found. Noir, the black, isn’t far behind. These liners are good for the entire day, no matter the circumstances. Noir glides on without skipping and I get the thin line that I prefer. ($26)

Youngblood Eye-Mazing Liquid Liner Pen

SENNA PINPOINT MICRO TIP LIQUID EYELINER is especially great if you feel you have unsteady hands for liquid liners. At the top where you hold it the plastic is somewhat indented and the material is more matte making it easier to hold onto. There’s no sliding of your fingertips. This liner is wonderful if you want to create a cat eye and Senna has some great tips on how to do that. ($20)

CAILYN IDEFINE LIQUID EYELINER is my new favorite product from Cailyn. I’ve got a slew of eyeliners from Cailyn but this is the one that I’m using the most. The brush is the thinnest of the 6 I’m sharing today. It’s a very flexible yet firm felt tip that applies easily plus it’s a super dark black. ($18)

Cailyn Idefine liquid eyeliner

EYEKO SKINNY MINI LIQUID EYELINER was in one of my many subscription boxes and it’s a treasure. The full size is available at Sephora for $16. I find this to be more of a blackened charcoal. It’s not super black, it’s not a harsh shade, so it’s a great addition when I don’t feel like my liner looking too dark. It’s made me want to try the waterproof Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Liner next.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

So there’s my sea of black. The only thing that could make me happier (eyeliner wise that is) would be if these wonderful liners also came in a dark brown. Then I’d be doing a happy dance. In the meantime, I’m loving these black liquid eyeliners. I hope some of my blogger buddies have some suggestions in their posts. Have you tried any of these? Do you have an idea for a black liquid I should try? — Marcia

Wantable, you brought a big smile this April

Have you heard of Wantable? Of course you have. Lisa and I talk about it all the time. We are Wantable fiends. Lisa has become the Wantable Accessory fiend while I remain the Cosmetic Box fiend. We have our readers to thank for a lot of that because you’ve used our affiliate link to help us earn credits toward a box to review – like this April Cosmetic Subscription box.

Wantable Cosmetic Subscription for April 2014

Wantable Cosmetic Subscription for April 2014

You are going to have to forgive me a little or at least be prepared for me to gush. Yes I’m going to gush. There’s a gush-worthy item in this delightful box and I can’t stop myself.

To give a quick recap – you fill out a very comprehensive profile that Wantable keeps improving upon. You pay either $40 for a one time box or $36 for a subscription that you can cancel at any time. If you get a box that you don’t like, you can return it for a refund. So if I like nude lips and bright polish I’m not going to get a flaming red lipstick and a nude polish. Your box will always be worth at least double and sometimes a lot more than you’ve paid.

my loves, likes and dislikes

my loves, likes and dislikes

April’s box had some great products. From my “love” list is a Cailyn Cosmetics eyeliner. I’ve reviewed lots of Cailyn eyeliners but I’ve never had a regular pencil from them so this is a first. Not my favorite item in the box but something I’ll get a lot of use out of. ($7)

The rest of the items are from my “like” list but they are more loves than likes! Billion Dollar Brows Hint of Tint Taupe brow gel is one of the few BDB products I haven’t tried so I was happy to have this in my box. It’s great for the many days I’m rushing but need something on my brows without having to be precise. It has a mascara wand to combine color and hold. The more you use, the darker it becomes. It’s also good to have to hold other brow products in place like a cream color. ($18)

La Bella Donna Mineral Light Lip Color in Shell is a beautiful lipstick that is conditioning while being rich and creamy ($24.50). Shell is the color of my mother’s lips. I looked at it and instantly felt my mom. At the moment my mom is in a nursing center but the minute she is up to putting on makeup again, this will be hers. It’s a beautiful shade that I’m sure would be fine on me but it’s screaming Mom to me and I know it will look great on her. Plus who doesn’t want a new lipstick to feel better?

Now for my gush, I hope you are ready. When I opened the Wantable box and saw a box from GlamNatural I was really happy. When I saw the words CREAM BLUSH I did a happy dance. You know I love cream blush and I’ve only had the opportunity to try very small samples of GlamNatural Cream Blush before. I had ordered a sample kit from the company and I loved the blush but I didn’t have the exact right shade since it was too light. Well, gush gush, Wantable sent me Glam Natural Cream Blush in You Make Me Blush, and it does. I mean it does make me blush and beautifully so.

Let’s start with this luxurious packaging. Open the box and you’ll see a black velvet pouch with the blush contained in a golden bottle that pumps out what you need.

Glam Natural Cream Blush in You Make Me Blush

You don’t need this much because it’s so richly textured. The color of Make Me Blush gives a beautiful, healthy glow. It’s super easy to blend since it’s really a liquid. It’s very satiny. My advice is to pump out a very small amount and build it up if you want. The amount above is too much for both cheeks.

I’m in love with this cream blush ($32) and I’m thrilled that Wantable included it my April 2014 box. While they didn’t know that I’d love it, someone has very good taste to put this brand and this product in the box.

Other brands in other boxes this month were Chella (a tool kit that I’d have also gushed about), BelleZZa eyeshadow, ‘Tini Beauty lips and more. No matter which brands you’d end up with, you’d surely love them. And if not then have no fear and return the box.

I look so forward to my Wantable boxes coming. I am going to do a little switching on my profile to see what changes will do – just for the fun of it since I can always change back. I hope you’ll use our affiliate link if you do decide to subscribe. And I hope if you subscribe you’ll find things to GUSH about too. — Marcia

Cailyn Liquid Eyeliners are competing for the win

I’m on a liquid eyeliner expedition to find the best. For years I wore nothing but gel eyeliners and while I still love them I think I was just ready for a change. In this search I’ve been testing a lot of eyeliners, both pencil and liquid, to see what which ones are the winners. So far I brought you my first eyeliner quest here and then reviewed the matte liquid eyeliners from Ellis Faas here. Today brings you Cailyn and their liquid eyeliners plus a pencil eyeliner. Let’s see if they can take the top spot in this competition.

Cailyn Line-Fix Gel Eyeliners

Cailyn Line-Fix Gel Eyeliners

The above picture is to show you how I love my Cailyn Gel Eyeliners. I reviewed these and still recommend them although I did get a strange texture in my Chocolate Mousse one from a subscription box. Other than that one though they are amazing liners. I haven’t given up gel eyeliners though since they are longer lasting than any other liners I own. Cailyn doesn’t have to worry about me and their gel liners, that’s for sure.

My original quest was to find the perfect brown liquid eyeliner but that’s not as easy as finding the perfect black liquid eyeliner. So many companies only make black liquids and ignore the browns. Cailyn Cosmetics makes two different types of liquid eyeliners and one does come in brown although I don’t have that one (y.e.t.).

Cailyn Liquid Eyeliner (brown)

Cailyn Liquid Eyeliner (brown)

I do have it though in both Silver and Blue Shimmer and I love it. Both of these were in my Wantable subscription boxes which is great since Cailyn is a brand I am very impressed with. I wore the Blue Shimmer the other day with a neutral brown eye and it was the perfect pop of color. I found that it was easy to use and dried in an appropriate amount of time. With a liquid liner that has such a short brush you do have to be careful not to get it on your eyelashes but that’s the only thing to worry about. It’s close to perfect otherwise.

Caitlyn Blue Shimmer Liquid Eyeliner

Caitlyn Blue Shimmer Liquid Eyeliner

The other liquid eyeliner from Cailyn is their idefine Liquid Eyeliner (sent for review). The only downside to idefine is it only comes in black ($18). I want this in every color. It’s that terrific! It’s a cross between a felt tip and a floppy tip.

Cailyn idefine Liquid Eyeliner

Cailyn idefine Liquid Eyeliner

I find this incredibly easy to apply because the tip is thin enough to get a fine line yet it’s sturdier than most liquid brushes. It’s not a brush though it may look brushlike. So many of the liquid eyeliners I’ve found apply too thick for my taste. This is just perfect. The best thing is that it lasts beautifully and it’s a true dark black.

Cailyn isn’t done though with eyeliner since they make some fabulous gel pencils. The Gel Glider Eyeliner Pencils ($17) come in 6 colors (black, chocolate, green, blue, purple and charcoal) and they do what they say – they GLIDE on. They are so smooth and easy to use.

Cailyn Gel Glider Eyeliner Pencil

Cailyn Gel Glider Eyeliner Pencil

The Chocolate (received for review) is a great brown. I love a brown that looks brown and not black. I also love that this is an eyeliner I can sharpen. I’ve got too many self sharpening liners that either break off or don’t get a fine enough line for me. Cailyn stuck with a real pencil which I appreciate. I will be able to use this exactly the way I want to – sharp and down to the end.

I think I could live happily ever after with Cailyn’s collection of eyeliners. They know what they are doing when it comes to these types of products. I can say for sure that idefine is in the running to win the gold medal for black liquid eyeliners!! Have you tried any of these Cailyn eyeliners? What did you think? — Marcia

Cailyn Cosmetics Gelux Eyebrow in Cocoa

I am always amazed at the difference eyebrows can make. Some people actually look better without eyebrows, like Whoopi Goldberg. Have you ever noticed that she removed hers completely? Check it out.

No question, she looks better without them!

No question, she looks better without them!

Most people, however, look better with them…especially if they are well-groomed. A fabulous eyebrow option that was sent to the BIZ is Cailyn Cosmetics Gelux Eyebrow ($22), which is a waterproof gel eyebrow filler. I am reviewing Cocoa, a wonderful shade for those with medium brown hair with blonde highlights (if you have more red in your hair, consider Mahogany instead).

Cailyn

the top is actually the brush

I love the packaging; I think it’s pretty ingenious. The top handle is actually a slant tipped brush that makes it easy to achieve a realistic looking eyebrow – not the dreaded ‘unicolor’ that looks unnatural. Just  fill in brows with short strokes going from the bottom of the brow upwards. Be sure to clean the brush before popping it back into the handle.

The top unscrews to reveal the gel eyebrow filler underneath.

The gel eyebrow filler is different from a typical brow wax. It’s softer and more natural looking. It’s also extremely long wearing. Cailyn Cosmetics has perfected something called ‘3D Smart Film Former’, which turns the pigment into a balm that keeps color true. The color doesn’t fade throughout the day so touch-ups just aren’t necessary. It’s also waterproof so you can go swimming without fear of losing those awesome eyebrows.

The Cailyn Cosmetics Gelux Eyebrow comes in eight different shades to fit most hair colors:  Birch, Hazelnut, Nutmeg, Cocoa, Mahogany, Oak, Ebony, and Espresso.  Birch is for the lightest of blondes, Hazelnut is for cool blondes, and Nutmeg is for warm or strawberry blondes. Cocoa is perfect for my medium brown hair with blonde highlights, while Mahogany is for medium brunettes with red highlights. Oak is for deep brown hair, and Ebony is for grey hair. Espresso is for the blackest black hair. Remember, you want to go a shade or two lighter than your hair color for the best results.

If you are looking for something easy and effective for gorgeous eyebrows or if you are looking to try something other than the typical eyebrow pencil or brow wax, I definitely recommend the Gelux Eyebrow. It’s a winner.  – Lisa
