Makeup Wars is all about hair – Living Proof and Brazilian Blowout Acai are my choices

We are a confusing bunch around here. Last week for Top Ten Beauty we talked about hair and this week for Makeup Wars we are also talking about hair. I’m actually glad because I mixed them up and now I get to add more hair products that I use all the time.

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

First thing to know about me is that I get my hair professionally straightened. I recently had another Brazilian Blowout procedure done, at least my 6th one. At the present time I’m only using the Acai line made by Brazilian Blowout but that will change in about a month. Prior to that I was using Pai-Shau and Living Proof. There are two things that you need to make sure are absent from your hair products whenever you have it straightened: they must be sulfate-free and have no sodium chloride. The sodium pulls the straightening out of your hair so that it doesn’t last. I watch for that in all products I use but especially during the first 6 weeks after a treatment.

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products are specially formulated for a keratin treatment. They are the aftercare regimen developed to extend the life of your Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatment. Even if you have another brand of treatment done, I’d still recommend these products since they do the job they are formulated to do: keep your hair straight, frizz free, smooth and silky looking.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are products I’d use 365 days a year. I find they keep my hair from drying out. My hair retains moisture because they contain smoothing proteins that fortify and seal the cuticle.

The conditioner provides UVA/UVB protection and is safe for color-treated hair. This is a mild everyday conditioner that glides through my hair.

All the Brazilian Blowout Acai products have a light citrus fragrance that doesn’t linger but I’d love it if it did since it’s so pleasant.

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

The Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque is to be used approximately once a week. My hair is shorter now than when I first started having my hair straightened so I find I only need this about every 10 days. My hairdresser swears by the Deep Conditioning Masque and uses it instead of the conditioner. She has beautiful thick hair that always looks lustrous and healthy. This masque not only smoothes and conditions, it promotes shine while also infusing moisture in your hair. The masque is what’s going to help with the longevity of a keratin treatment.

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Brazilian Blowout has created several products to help style your hair. My favorite of these is the Acai Daily Smoothing Serum. I always have to put in a styling product before I brush through my wet hair and this one is great. It’s clear and not too thick, has that luscious citrus scent, and helps detangle my wet hair. This is what keeps my hair looking shiny and fights the humidity.

I’ve repurchased these products over and over. I use Amazon since I save a bundle over what my hair salon sells it for. My Deep Conditioning Masque is the newest of my replacement products so it has the new packaging.

Living Proof No Frizz

Living Proof No Frizz

Another brand that I’m crazy about is Living Proof. I use the FRIZZ line which is the No Frizz line. Sephora had several samples available of Living Proof so I took advantage of those to see what I thought of the line. Once I got the samples of No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, I was sold. Living Proof is available at Ulta, Sephora and Amazon but I find that the prices on Amazon are much better so that’s where my replacements will come from. And I will replace these products since they’ve giving me living proof that they work well.

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Both Living Proof FRIZZ shampoo and conditioner sold me when I saw that they were color safe, sulfate-free, and contained no heavy silicones or oils. I can add an oil I like when styling but that’s my choice. The first new anti-frizz technology in over 30 years, it does what silicones can’t; eliminate frizz by blocking humidity-without weighing hair down.” This shampoo’s key ingredient is PolyfluoroEster which creates an invisible shield on the hair to lock in moisture-proof smoothness and repel dirt and oil, so you can go longer between washes to break the frizz and damage cycle.

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

I chose to buy Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream as the product to use after washing my hair. I always need something to comb through so I’ll be tangle free. While it’s more expensive than their Frizz Leave In Conditioner, it has more benefits.

No Frizz derives performance from Living Proof’s “miracle molecule,” PolyfluoroEster, to create a weightless shield on hair that blocks humidity absorption, smooths the cuticle, and repels dirt. The PolyfluoroEster shield is established over the first five uses of the No Frizz regimen, so it becomes stronger, the longer you use it—and can be maintained with consistent use of No Frizz products.

That’s the reason I chose the Nourishing Styling Cream. I need so little that it doesn’t matter that it’s a little more money. Plus it really works. In the winter when I knew I was coming towards the end of my treatment, this is what kept my hair from misbehaving.

In the future I’ll be exploring more from Living Proof. I actually have a travel set of A Perfect Day that I will break into in the future. Until then I plan to continue my FRIZZ routine.

Top Ten Tuesday – Hair Masks, Conditioners and Treatments

TOP TEN TUESDAY is addressing hair this week. We’ve chosen hair masks as our topic but that extends (in my world) to conditioners and treatments for my hair. As bloggers we have more of these products than most people I’m sure, hopefully you’ll find some products that you will love having in your life. With winter peeking its ugly head, we all need more care for our hair. Enjoy — Marcia
1.  PRETTY LITTLE ELIXIR – This is my favorite of all my hair masks. It was created by both Phyrra (of and Future Derm. It takes longer than most of the other masks but it’s so worth it. This is the only hair mask that I use a shower cap with and it makes my hair as soft as a puppy.
2. BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT ACAI DEEP CONDITIONING MASQUE – I get a Brazilian Blowout or other keratin straightening treatment about every 7 months. No matter what treatment I have done I always turn to this Acai Masque. I think this whole Acai line is terrific and keep buying it. This masque is especially good to use once a week for the first month or two after a straightening treatment since it helps extend it.
3.  ECRU NEW YORK ACACIA PROTEIN MASQUE – I recently reviewed the ECRU New York Acacia shampoo and conditioner which I love. The masque is terrific, to be used with or without the other products. It’s highly recommended especially for color treated hair.
4.  BRIOGEO DON’T DESPAIR, REPAIR DEEP CONDITIONING MASK – This is one of Lisa’s favorite masks. I’ve tried a sample which was enough to make me include this rich, great smelling hair mask on my list. The ingredients are wonderful for your hair.
5. MONAT REJUVENIQE – Full review to come on this amazing hair oil that can also be used on your skin. Rejuveniqe helps with so many things like shininess, hair repair, and volume. Plus there are no silicones.
6. ROUX LEAVE IN TREATMENTS – There are 4 different kinds of Leave In Treatments from Roux and all are wonderful. My favorite changes from time to time but right now it’s the Extra Moisture one. These are leave ins so I don’t have to put anything more in my hair before I style it.
7.  KERASTASE CHROMA RICHE MASK – If you want an extra rich mask, this is the one to get. This is a very thick formula that you leave in for 5-10 minutes and then wash out. The fragrance is strong so I don’t use it often but if my hair looks damaged I do reach for this one.
8.  NELSON J ARGAN OIL MOISTURE HEALING MASK – I haven’t used this but I’ve certainly heard my blog partner Lisa rave about it enough. She is crazy about this hair mask so it’s definitely worth a look at.
9.  AG HAIR RECONSTRUCT ANTI-BREAKAGE MASK – I’ve enjoyed using all the AG Hair products that I’ve tried. This mask is great for hair like mine that does break and shed easily.  It’s great for using as a short term conditioner that you rinse out quickly or a longer time mask.
10.  DARSHANA NATURAL INDIAN HAIR OIL – This miraculous oil leaves hair as beautiful and shiny as a movie star’s. The creators of this treatment used only natural ingredients (natural Ayurvedic Oils) and left out silicone, parabens, sulfates, mineral oil making this a cruelty free product. If you want shine, Darshana is the way to go.
At first I didn’t know if I could come up with 10 but I realize now that I’m lucky enough to have found 10 with others on my almost list. Have you a favorite hair mask or treatment?

A Brazilian Blowout followup and review of the Açai hair care line

Here’s the followup to the Brazilian Blowout I had done in early December 2011. I raved about the process at the time and almost 6 months later I want to share that I’m still so happy I had this done. The process has lasted me all this time and I’m just now seeing the end of its days. Even though I’m noticing more waves in my hair, I still don’t seem to be having frizzy hair.

I only have to wash my hair 3 to 4 times a week with the Brazilian Blowout keratin process in my hair. I find it so time consuming to dry my hair, even with the best of blow dryers, so having days off without spending that time is a relief. What’s also a relief is knowing that my hair looks as good on second and third day hair as it does on the first day.

I’ve used the Brazilian Blowout Açai Hair Care almost exclusively for the last 6 months and I’m still using them. When I had the Brazilian Blowout done I came home with the Açai Shampoo and Conditioner as well as the Masque. I’ve since acquired all the products that Açai makes and want to share my experience with these with you. All the products are have a proprietary Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex to infuse your hair with an exclusive blend of smoothing and sealing properties. Using this line guarantees that you are doing what you can to make the keratin process last as long as possible. There is NO Sodium Chloride in Brazilian Blowout products. They are also sulfate free.

Açai Shampoo and Conditioner: these gentle to use products are excellent. After all this time I’m not even finished with them. A little goes a long way. They are gentle yet effective. I’m not the person that believes in “shampoo, rinse, repeat” like I did when young. One time shampooing is all I need. A small amount of conditioner is enough to leave my hair feeling smooth. The shampoo lathers well but not too much. A brand I had used previously on my keratin processed hair always left my hair feeling dry but these work perfectly keeping my hair moisturized and smooth.

Açai Deep Conditioning Masque: I use this once a week. Sometimes I can leave it in for 5 minutes, sometimes it’s just about 2 to 3. On days you use the masque, you don’t need the conditioner. You need just a tiny amount of the masque for it to be effective. I have shoulder length hair and I haven’t made a dent in my Açai masque yet.

Açai Protective Thermal Straightening Balm: this is my favorite product of all I have. After washing my hair I’ll put about a quarter’s worth in the palm of one hand, rub my hands together and pull this through my hair. It’s got a lovely sweet orange fragrance that doesn’t linger though I wouldn’t mind it if it did. I can then comb through my hair without having to tug and pull. This balm is clear and thick.

Smoothing Serum

Açai Smoothing Serum: this is part of the original aftercare set. It’s infused with the ingredients needed to extend the process. It not only detangles but also conditions your hair when you are using it. When it’s raining or even threatening rain, I reach for the Smoothing Serum. The serum is white and looks more like a cream.

Spray Shine

Açai Shine & Shield Spray Shine*: I really didn’t think I needed this spray until I actually used it. I don’t use hairsprays very often but this is not my mother’s hairspray. This not only makes my style last longer but it imparts the most terrific shine. The Açai Shine & Shield Spray is so light but it adds in extra shine and more important it adds in UVA/UVB protection helping my color last longer. I’ve been able to make my color last a week longer when I use this regularly.

Açai Instant Volume Thermal Root Lift*: I reach for this on “old” hair – the times that I’ve had to skip an extra day and want to impart new life into my hair. The first time I used too much but I’ve since learned to use it more judiciously. I lift my hair at the roots and spray it just there. The nozzle is perfect for that job. I then use my blow dryer with my round brush and voila, my hair looks new again. A quick spray of the Shine & Shield Spray and it’s like I came from my beauty salon.

Acai Sculpt & Define Polish

Açai Restorative Sculpt & Define Polish*: This is the one product I haven’t used yet. What it does though is help when you want that “piecey” look to your hair. Here’s what Brazilian Blowout tells us about this product: This unique polish transforms the hair by adding weightless texture, definition and flexible hold to desired pieces. The exclusive Brazilian Super-Nutrient Complex works to fortify and protect while helping to deliver that much-desired “second day after blow-dry” texture. Full spectrum UVA/UVB protection.”

What adds even more to this line of Brazilian Blowout Açai products is that a little goes a long way. When I have my Brazilian Blowout done again I won’t need more product other than the shampoo. After all these months the rest are still going strong. I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of my Brazilian Blowout and the Brazilian Blowout Açai hair care line. I’ll also continue using them with or without the process, they are that good and that gentle. — Marcia

My Brazilian Blowout experience and review

When friends hear that I get my hair straightened they shake their head in amazement. In their mind I’m the one with straight hair so why would I want it straightened? It’s true that basically I do have straight hair but that doesn’t mean it’s the way I want it. My wants are to not have to worry about frizz, to not worry about silly kinks in my hair, and to wake up and brush my hair and be done most days. As we age our hair changes too so what is in their mind from my 20’s and 30’s isn’t what I have in my older age. Gray or white hair grows in coarser than brown hair and that coarseness can bring with it a curl or kink that wasn’t there. This is why I recently went for a Brazilian Blowout at my beauty salon.

Brazilian Blowout before and after, similar to my hair

This is probably the 6th time I’ve done a keratin process. I’ve had the Coppola Keratin done at least 3 times. I had something called Keratin Express done once and I had the original Brazilian Blowout done. All worked pretty well for the process but there were negatives with them all. The Coppola Keratin was actually terrific but it was three days of torture afterwards. You can’t get your hair wet or damp at all. That means no showers, no exercise, making sure you aren’t in the rain plus NEVER EVER pull your hair back or clip it. By the end of the third day my skin was crawling to get into a shower and wash it. Granted, it lasted well for approximately 5 – 6 months on my shoulder length hair, but the idea of going through this was again was torture.

The Keratin Express was a shorter process. You can wash it out the same day but my hairstylist recommended leaving it in at least 24 hours to let it set. Some process as above but you can wash it and leave if you want. But my hair wasn’t AS straight and it didn’t last that long.

Enter the Brazilian Blowout. Now if you are know anything about the process you’ve heard some pretty awful things in the past. I was surprised when my stylist told me that’s what she’s using from now on. But I trust her completely so when she told me about the classes she took to learn how to do it properly and about her certification I decided to go along with her recommendation.

In the past there was some controversy that Brazilian Blowout contained formaldehyde. It was really a big deal in the news and in the beauty world. Brazilian Blowout made sure their products passed all the standards and tests available to counteract the negative press they were given.

The process itself takes 90 minutes although I did have my hair tinted on the same day so I was in the salon longer. The basic steps done by my stylist are as follows:

  1. Wash the hair very thoroughly with a clarifying shampoo. My hair was washed 3 times to make sure that it was perfectly free of color and any products so it would accept the treatment well.
  2. Blow dry the hair until it’s at least 2/3 dry. It can be slightly damp without a problem.
  3. The stylist now applies the product in layers combing the keratin through thoroughly. This takes the most time since just a small amount of hair is done at a time.
  4. Once your hair is covered with the Brazilian Blowout formula the stylist then blows it totally dry using a very hot hairdryer.
  5. Next she/he uses a 450 degree flat iron and goes through your hair a little at a time until your hair is totally flat ironed.
  6. The hair is then washed twice. I waited a few minutes and then the Acai Masque was applied and I waited a few minutes for that to set.
  7. Last is another wash (I’m not sure if this was with or without shampoo) and a blow dry using the BB Acai Serum or Balm. That’s it. Done. (official steps are HERE)

My hair was not only perfectly straight but it was as shiny as could be. I didn’t have any need to even wash it for the next 3 days though I was able to stick it up in a ponytail and put on a shower cap to take a shower. I had my hair in a ponytail often for the next few days afterwards too since that’s how I wear my hair when I’m taking care of my grandson. He’d leave and I’d take out the elastic and my hair would fall back straight and shiny.

Now I’m washing it every few days using Brazilian Blowout Açai Styling Products. Once a week it’s recommended that instead of using the Açai conditioner  that you use the Açai Masque and leave it on for 5 minutes and then wash it out. I’ve continued using my current argan oils but I’m considering buying the Açai Protective Thermal Straightening Balm to use instead. The Acai products add more keratin to your hair making the bond stronger and longer lasting.

Now for the cost… I’m sure this varies all over the country and in each salon. I paid $350 for the process which also included three full size Brazilian Blowout Acai products (shampoo, conditioner and masque).

If you live in the Detroit, Michigan area I highly recommend my stylist and salon: R Place Salon on 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills, MI. The phone number is 248-553-4480 . My stylist is named Rima and I’ve sent people to her for a few years now with absolute confidence in her skills. The other stylists in the salon have also been trained to do the process too. (I received no compensation or discount for this process by the way.)

The day I had the Brazilian Blowout done it was absolutely pouring out. It made no difference at all. I was out all evening so I was in and out of the rain though I was wearing a raincoat. As I’m writing this I’ve recently come in from being in a light rain and my hair is perfect. I love how my hair looks since it’s shiny and silky. It’s so easy to take care of. I wake up and brush my hair and that’s it! I’m done. Shiny, swingy hair. I know too that it will last me at least 4 months and probably 6.  Would I recommend this? A resounding YES! — Marcia
