Finger Paints Special Effects collection swatches and review

If you follow nail trends you probably realize that a biggie for this year is colorful flakes in polishes. These change with light so you see something different all the time. For a long time polishes like this were hard to get or expensive but that’s all changed. Finger Paints polishes are sold at Sally’s Beauty Supply and in some drugstores. For Jan 2012 though they’ve come out with s special collection that is flying off the shelves. It’s called Special Effects and is exclusive to Sally’s (not online though).
Along with the collection is a black polish called Black Expressionism. I’m not sure if this is anything different than any other black polish but I wasn’t taking any chances when I found the polishes and bought that too.

When you hold the bottles in your hand it’s hard to differentiate between them. They are all a creamy color with glass type flecks in them. I couldn’t quite figure out what difference I’d see between most once applied.

Since I wanted to blog about this quickly before they are gone I am using nail wheels to help show you the variety and what you can do. With a Sally’s Beauty Club Card these were $4.99 with Black Expressionism being $4.49. If you don’t have a card you should get one. For the average shopper the cards are $7.50 but with that you get a coupon for $5 to be used on anything. I’ve always paid for the card just by my initial savings and the 10% discount I get on the products. The card is good for a year. If you are 55 or older the card is reduced to $5. (Without a card the polishes are $5.49 each.)

Finger Paints Asylum

On to the pretties: Asylum, Flecked, Flashy, Motley, and Twisted. They sound like an old time heavy rock band!

Asylum has red and blue holographic flakes. Turn your nails though and you’ll see other shades like orange or green

Flecked is a green fleck that looks amazing over black polish. I rarely wear green but that won’t stop me with this since I’ll see both green and blue flecks in it.

Finger Paints Flecked

Flashy is similar to Flecked except you’re going to see red and orange. It reminds me of autumn leaves.

Motley is the more blue version of these polishes. You’ll see a predominance of blue with just a touch of green.

Twisted is a conglomeration of all. You’ll swear you see every color in it – red, blue, green, orange, purple and gold. This is my personal favorite.

When you wear polishes like this you aren’t going to get that typical smooth as glass feel on your nails. The flecks don’t stand up but they make the polishes thicker than regular polish.

I also swatched these over red and white. The red is okay, the white is nothing so I didn’t bother photographing it. Black is really the way to go but I like the blue also.

Here are some blogs with great photos to help convince you how gorgeous these are if I haven’t done a good job:

I always have good wear with Finger Paints polishes. This time I got about 6 days before I noticed that my tips were showing white but other than that they looked perfect. Actually Finger Paints was the first brand that created my obsession with unusual color polishes so I’ll always have a special fondness for them And now I have Special Effects with them too.  — Marcia

  1. I so wish I could do my own nails. My left hand always looks so good but not so much on my right hand.

  2. I love flakies more than the crackle. I am just afraid it will be flakie overload this year so I am going about it slowly, not to overdose like the crackle!

  3. Thanks for the shout out above! Just wanted to let you know, you showed up on my Stumble Upon weekly recommendations list 🙂 You did a great job with these….love it!

  4. I picked some of these up the other week — Motley and Twisted. LOVE them! Wearing Motley over a pretty grass-green polish — gives it just a hint of sparkle and dimension.

  5. The only problem with FingerPaints “special” nail polishes is that it’s in a very limited supply. Thus making EBay and similar websites the ONLY place you can get them if you aren’t in the store when/if they put the display out for retail sale. I’ve found out that in at least one situation the limited supply nail polishes are quite often bought up by the employees, then tripled in price on EBay. Sally’s does a disservice to their customers by such limited editions.

  6. Debi, I totally agree with you. I hate when I see things like this on ebay for ridiculous prices. I didn’t realize though that it could be employees. I was surprised the day I went in to buy these and asked the salesperson to check in the back to see if she had more. She came out and said no, yet three days later there were a few out for sale.
