nyakio™ was founded by the gorgeous Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, a first-generation American of Kenyan descent, who has based her line on her family recipes and beauty recipes from 13 different countries from around the world. Everything is ethically and sustainable sourced with indigenous ingredients and is formulated without Sulfates, Phthalates, Parabens, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Formaldehyde and Butylene Glycol.

Companies that make it their mission to not only help make our skin look amazing but also help empower women are always a favorite at the BIZ. nyakio™ partners with Girls Inc., which helps girls through mentorships, internships, and events that give them amazing learning experiences, as well as providing monetary support. It’s all good stuff!

I tested four products, one that restores, one that moisturizes, and two that treat.

nyakio™ Marula & Neroli Brightening Oil
  • Marula & Neroli Brightening Oil ($42) (South Africa for Marula Oil and Morocco for Neroli Oil) is a light skin brightening oil that evens out skin tone that luminizes the complexion. Ingredients include marula and neroli oils, which have vitamin C, an excellent antioxidant that is great for evening out skin tone and brightening dull complexions. I am really enjoying this oil and it’s definitely helping my hyperpigmentation areas. It has a light, yummy scent and it isn’t heavy or greasy.  I have combination skin and it just loves this – the oil soaks right in and actually seems to leave my skin more balanced.
nyakio™ Baobab Youth-Infused Daily Defense Creme
nyakio™ Baobab Youth-Infused Daily Defense Creme

  • Baobab Youth Infused Daily Defense Crème (Mali) ($35) Oh my, this is a fabulous moisturizer! Super rich and just lovely. It doesn’t take much to make skin buttery soft and supple. No greasy kids stuff here – just satiny smooth and amazing! Ingredients include baobab oil which is chock full of antioxidants.
    nyakio™ African Black Soap
    nyakio™ African Black Soap

  • African Black Soap  ($35) Purifying Mud Mask (Ghana)  It only takes about ten minutes for this mud mask to draw out all the dirt and nastiness hiding in your pores, leaving incredibly soft, clean, completely detoxed skin. African black soap has vitamins A and E and is actually quite gentle while still being kick-ass effective. This is fabulous for very oily skin as well as sensitive skin.
    nyakio™ Chamomile Soothing Sleeping Mask

  • Chamomile Soothing Sleep Mask (Egypt) ($35) This is an overnight treatment cream that works wonderfully for very dry skin. It’s not sticky or thick, it sinks in and is easy to sleep in without getting all over your sheets or pillowcase. I put this on my dry areas, like my forehead and my cheeks, while avoiding my oily areas. It really works wonders on dry, scaly skin! It leaves skin soft, supple, calmed and happy. Ingredients include chamomile, calendula and aloe vera.

Overall, nyakio™ is truly lovely line of interesting products that represent beauty rituals from all over the world.  Be sure to take a look the next time you are at Ulta – you won’t be disappointed!  – Lisa
