Save the coral reefs and your skin with Australian Gold’s New Botanical Sunscreen Mineral Lotions

Australian GoldOnly six more days until the official start of summer! That means it is time to find some excellent sunscreen, stat. However, did you know that the EWG says between 25 and 60 million bottles of chemicals from sunscreens are contaminating our coral reef areas every year?  And this issue is continuing to get worse.  On January 20, 2017, Hawaii state senator Will Espero introduced a bill which would ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate in Hawaii (except under medical prescription) to the state Congress. Espero argues that a ban is important to preserve the state’s tourism industry, because Hawaii relies heavily on tourists attracted by its coral reefs.

So, how can you help? Make sure your UVA/UVB sunscreen does not use oxybenzone. Look for the words ‘reef safe’ on the label.

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Mineral Lotions SPF 50

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Mineral Lotions SPF 30 & SPF 50 ($14.99; SPF30 –, SPF, Ulta, CVS, Walmart)  I recommend this for the body. Australian Gold has a tinted version specifically for the face. Because this is a zinc oxide sunscreen, it does have a light white cast that some people love, some people hate. I actually like it – I know when it’s time to reapply, especially in sensitive areas like around the bikini line. You really don’t need a ton to get excellent sun protection. It has a very pleasant, slightly citrus scent, and the texture is soft and powdery, not greasy.  Here’s what Australian Gold says:

Non-greasy, antioxidant rich formula that provides UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection. The formula uses Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to provide a non-chemical sun protection option, with a powder-like matte-finish that’s never greasy.

  • Broad Spectrum UVA/UVA Protection
  • Water resistant for up to 80 minutes
  • Eucalyptus to calm, reinvigorate and oxygenate skin
  • Protein packed Red Algae to nourish with Vitamin A and Amino Acids
  • Kakadu Plum which contains exceptional levels of Vitamin C which is known to help protect against free radical damage
  • Vitamin E to maintain moisturized, healthy looking skin
  • Eco conscious formulations:
    • Packaging is designed to use as few materials as possible in a recyclable container to reduce any potential waste.
    • Reef Friendly Formulas are free of Oxybenzone, parabens, phthalates, Petrolatum, PABA, SLS, Dyes and Oils
