Makeup Wars returns with favorite red lips

Aaah the Makeup Wars I’ve been dreading. Red lips. I’ve never really warmed to the idea of red lipstick so finding one to call my favorite is really odd. But a challenge has been issued by the lovely bloggers of the Makeup Wars team and I’m going to do my best.

Here are the reasons I don’t like red lips on me:
1) There’s no way I can get away without a lipliner when wearing red. It looks unfinished to me. I have dozens of lipliners yet I rarely wear one. I’d have to go to the trouble of matching one and spending more money.

2) Red lips show every flaw of my lipline. I don’t have a prominent lipline nor do I have an even one. If there’s ever going to be fine lines that lipstick can bleed into, it’s with red lips.

3) I feel the color turns my lips into tiny slits advertising to the world “hey everyone, look at those small lips on that big face!”

4) I think it makes me look old. Not older, just old. I have the coloring that should carry off a cool toned red but I look in the mirror and see someone who’s too old to be me.

Do I like red lipstick ? Actually I think it’s gorgeous on the right person. I see colors I’d love to be able to wear, I see red lipstick I admire. Just not on me.

Le Metier de Beaute Red Velvet Lip Creme vs Sephora + Pantone Universe Lip Luster in Cayenne

So after this long preamble, what did I pick?  I narrowed it down to two choices: the absolutely stunning Le Métier de Beaute Red Velvet Lip Crème and Sephora + Pantone Universe Lip Luster Lipstick in Cayenne.

I adore the look of the Le Métier de Beaute Red Velvet Lip Creme if I’m only looking at my lips. I could stare in a (magnifying) mirror forever and look at the lush glossy shade of a true cool red. The finish is so full. It’s a cross between a gloss and a lipstick. More of a liquid lipstick and it actually lasts really well. It’s a show stopper …but not on me. I’m not comfortable enough in this beauty but if you love this kind of red than it’s worth tracking it down. I received it as a GWP but it’s a very similar look to Bombay Core Lipstick with Brilliant Gloss in their regular collection. If you’ve never bought a Le Metier de Beaute Lip Crème you should consider it, they are creamy and have beautiful shine.

The winner though is Sephora + Pantone Universe Lip Luster Lipstick in Cayenne since I will wear this out of the house. It’s not so “in your face”. I actually bought this online thinking it was a dark pink. But it’s as red as I can comfortably get. The lipstick itself is interesting since it’s actually a core of color inside of a clear balm. The outer section is more of a hard gloss finish with the color inside. I think the color is flattering and I’m happy that it doesn’t emphasize the 4 negatives mentioned. As pretty as it is though, it’s got glitter embedded in it and I wish it didn’t. It would be perfect without it.

So did I accomplish the mission? Did I show that there’s a red for even someone that’s afraid of red or should I keep on trying?

  1. LMdB Red Velvet is one of my FAVES. omg. TDF. Also, I need that Cayenne in my life. I need another red like I need an extra hole in my head, but I can just blame you so that makes it okay haha

  2. OOoh. I have been wanting to try out that Sephora Pantone Lip color for a while now, but I keep forgetting to put it in my cart when I’m shopping. This is an excellent color. I’m so glad you reviewed it!

  3. I love your Sephora red :)

  4. I think red lipstick looks good on you.

  5. That’s because you’ve never seen me in real life Ammie.

  6. I’m surprised I willingly bought a red but I like it and will wear it.

  7. Oh I hope I make you spend money – it’s retribution Brooke for all that I buy after reading your blog.

  8. Oh, I have never played with any of the Sephora Pantone lippies. I am going to have to go see them now. And I think you did a grand job of pointing someone hesitant about reds to something they might feel good about trying!

  9. That looks good on you. I too avoid red quite a bit as I get older, but I still like to go for sheer reds fairly often.

  10. I’m cracking up! I think the same thing about my skinny lips, just advertising that they aren’t there really. But, it seems to work for me. And, I agree with Carleen, a sheer red works for everyone!

  11. Christine, you are young. I am not!! LOL

  12. I hadn’t really tried sheer reds before Carleen but I’m learning!

  13. Thanks Paula, I figured that not all readers would be receptive to the dark reds of the Le Metier as beautiful as it is.

  14. I agree with some of the other comments about wearing a sheer red! It can really work for those not wanting a full-on bold red. :) Lol, I am totally with you on the thin lips issue (but I think you are being too hard on yourself, really!). Sometimes I feel that bolder red lipstick makes it more noticable that my lips/mouth are small. While bold colors can emphasize small lips, the vibrant color does wonders for the complexion. Great choice with the sephora/pantone color!

Have to confess, the Le Metier scares me a little (I’m a BIG time chicken!), but the Cayenne is so wearable. I could do that one!

  16. Mamavalveeta, I’m with you. I love the Le Metier if I only look at my lips but it’s too bold for my face which is a shame because it’s gorgeous.

  17. I love the Sephora on your lips!!!

  18. I used to be afraid to wear bright red lipstick even though I loved it on other people. Finally, I said “screw it” and tried it. I got so many compliments. I think it can be hard to find just the right shade and I have a ton of red lipsticks. Your suggestion to go with a sheerer read is a great one!

  19. Both of these reds are so gorgeous, I’d love to try Red Velvet! My absolute favorite red is Hot by Covergirl Lip Perfection. I just ventured into wearing reds in the past year and wish I had tried it so many years ago.

  20. very nice selections!
