Mamma Mia! Maya Chia!

Maya Chia is a relatively young beauty brand which presents itself as a non-toxic beauty line. The Maya Chia product line is created by Susanne Norwitz, who has a lifelong interest in the Maya people through her doctor father. The brand uses a proprietary process to extract the chia oil, called supercritical extraction. It results in a completely pure oil, which is free from any chemical residues and impurities.

In keeping with making healthy choices for skin care and make up, I decided to try both of these serums (Happy Hour and Golden Hour) as I particularly love this brand.

Drop a small amount from the pipette onto your fingers and rub them together to obtain the optimum consistency. You can blend it into your moisturizer or foundation for an all over sheen or apply it as you would any highlighter onto the high points of your face.

The Maya Chia website says: The pearlized mineral sheen is suspended in an ultra lightweight, easily absorbed infusion of the world’s most nutrient-rich botanicals. It is makeup that is a treat for the health of your skin and what we hope will be a highlight to your day.

The highlight of the day is available in two shades:

the happy hour — imparts a cool-toned pink radiance – as if you are radiating with joy.

the golden hour — imparts a warm, golden, champagne-like radiance – as if you are lit by candlelight.

The color descriptions are right on the money. I’ve even combined the two for a pink champagne tone. You can layer for more intensity if you prefer although one layer works well enough for me.

I can’t find good swatches of them online nor do they show up well on camera. There are several good YouTube videos that show them in action and you can get an idea of how they look on the skin by accessing them. Here’s my favorite one.

I spent $42 on each of the serums and if you have some texture (polite way of saying wrinkles and pores) these do not emphasize them as some highlighters do. You have to shake the bottle well and then dispense a small amount from the pipette into your hand. They work equally well on bare, moisturized or made up skin. You can apply it over blush also. The only gripe I have is a minor one- the name of the product is only on the box, not the bottle.

There is a charitable aspect to Maya Chia which makes this brand even more favorable to me. “The little chia seed has been revered by the Maya people of Central America – and for good reason. Packed with the highest concentration of essential antioxidant of any botanical source, the chia seed is also rich in Omegas, vitamins and minerals.

At Maya Chia, we want to give back to the Maya people of Central and South American who gave so much to us for thousands of years. A percentage of our net profits will be donated to helping the Maya people of Central and South America.”

Oil see you in my next post.  —  Phyllis

Also available at Integrity Botanicals which occasionally has this in their samples w/purchase.

  1. Did not know the brand, but the concept is wonderful

  2. I need to try these!

  3. I have some chia oil serum that I use in the winter that I adore (I even like the scent), but I have never heard of illuminating chia oils. They sound so interesting – a double benefit!

  4. I hear such wonderful things about chia seeds and have been curious about the pudding my friend makes with it. As far as beauty, I didn’t know how wonderful it could be!

  5. I REALLY want these! I think they’d be really pretty mixed with foundations!

  6. I heard so many rave reviews about this brand! Hoping to try it some day.

  7. Gosh these sound lovely! I really like the idea of a facial oil and a highlighter in one is brilliant!

  8. oh that is really interesting!!! I had no idea the plant was such a spikey thing. I’m looking for a good pink highlight. I love a pinky champagne or champagne for highlight too.
