Flower Beauty Foxy Browns and Smoke & Mirrors eyeshadow palettes – review and swatches

FLOWER Foxy Browns and Smoke & MIrrors

FLOWER Foxy Browns and Smoke & Mirrors

I feel sort of bad writing this review. I wanted to like the new Drew Barrymore FLOWER Beauty line so much. I was excited with the things I’ve read about the line and I think Drew Barrymore is the cutest (and sometimes kookiest) girly girl around. I feel like I’m going to be dissing ET and little Gertie. When I review the cream blushes for you it will be different but I’m not feeling the love for FLOWER Shadow Play eyeshadow palettes.

None of the WalMart stores near me carry the cosmetics yet so I ordered online. I bought 2 eyeshadow palettes, 2 cream blushes and 2 cream eyeshadows. I first opened one of each to be sure I liked them enough to open the second. While I liked the first palette I opened, Foxy Browns, I didn’t love it. But I ended up with a look that I thought was very attractive and wore well. After wearing that palette twice I was confident enough to open Smoke and Mirrors. That’s where the problem lies. This was extremely disappointing therefore my genius idea went down the drain. Of course if I’d opened Smoke and Mirrors first I wouldn’t have known I did like Foxy Browns.

Flower Shadow Play in Foxy Browns

Flower Shadow Play in Foxy Browns

flower foxy labelI’ll start with the good so you can see why I continued. Foxy Browns is a nice neutral palette especially for $9.99. I was able to put together an eye look using all 4 shades that wore exceptionally well. It didn’t fade on me and every time I looked in the mirror I liked the look. It’s not all positive with the palette but once I realized how to use these shadows it worked out well. What I found is that I needed to pat the shadows on, not sweep them on. My go to brush is the MAC 217. I almost always pick it up first when doing my makeup. But the shadows in Foxy Browns are too powdery for that and I ended up with pigment all over my face. I switched to a flatter brush – 239 and the discontinued 272 – and used a patting motion and was much happier.

Wearing Foxy Browns

Wearing Foxy Browns

The colors in Foxy Browns are light milk chocolate, dark bone with a brown undertone, matte dark chocolate and petal pink. The good news is that they actually work well together and I found all colors usable. The pigmentation in this is not the greatest though. I had to keep adding to get it to an acceptable level of color on my eyes. It isn’t a palette I’d grab if I was in a hurry or one I’d take on a trip. If the shades are right for you though, it’s worth a little extra work. None of the shadows are shimmery but only one is a true matte shade, the rest are more of a semi-matte.

Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke and Mirrors

Once I was happy with Foxy then I figured it was a go for Smoke and Mirrors. The colors are close but looked like they’d give me a completely different look. Unfortunately they don’t give me any look. They don’t show up on me. I’ve tried it so far with a Flower Cream Eyeshadow as the base, with Too Faced Shadow Insurance as the base and with MAC Painterly thinking that something had to make the shadows adhere to my lid. But there’s so little pigmentation in these that it’s like I’m applying air. The colors swatches look pretty enough but they disappear on me even on my very fair skin. The shades are a light brown based taupe, a grayed purple, a darker chocolate and a bone shade. I was excited about the grayed purple since it looked like a nice subtle way to add a little purple in but it’s a no-go. I do like the taupe though but I doubt I’ll pull out the palette for just one shade. As if this wasn’t bad enough, it fades away on me. Poof, it’s gone. Maybe that’s the Smoke and Mirrors part since it magically disappears. On my fingers the colors are beautiful but that’s not quite going to do it.

Sadly I can’t recommend FLOWER Beauty Smoke & Mirrors at all and I am pulling petals off of Foxy Browns even though I sort of like it. I just don’t like to work so hard to make my shadows look good.  Sorry Drew but I promise not to be mean about the cream blushes.– MARCIA

  1. Don’t feel bad Marcia, you’re just telling the truth as a blogger and that’s what your readers want. What works for one doesn’t mean it will work for someone else but it gives us a general idea of the product and what to expect. I appreciate the heads up on it especially with me being close in age as you.

  2. Thanks Mimi, I think it’s because I so rarely dislike something that I felt bad. I’ve read good reviews of these but for me it wasn’t worth the money.

  3. I am driving myself crazy looking for this line at my walmart… :/ So far no luck!

  4. I found polish at one of the local Walmarts and lip products but I wanted eyes. I bought online. I probably would have bought the same things though since you can’t tell quality in a mass market store.

My local Walmart doesn’t carry this line as well. It’s good that you did a review on this, I was planning to buy online but not anymore. Thanks!

  6. You should try the cream shadows if you haven’t. I liked those and the lipsticks!

  7. I was looking at the Foxy Browns palette and sort of glad I didn’t grab it because the colors look too matte. I have the Blue Lagoons palette. While the colors are not something I would wear everyday, I liked the slightly shimmery pigmented formula.

  8. Hi Teri, Foxy Browns is okay but it’s not worth the effort to make it look great. I think there are a lot better even at that price.

  9. Thanks Tina. I have two cream eyeshadows and they are nice for the price. I haven’t tried the lipsticks since I’m worried about fragrance.

  10. Excellent review, Marcia. I appreciate your detailed account- now I know to avoid trying FLOWER Beauty Smoke & Mirrors. At any price point one shouldn’t have to work so hard to make eyeshadows work! I’m not even sure where Walmart is in LA, but I don’t think that I will go out of my way to locate one! Thanks!

  11. Thanks Lola. I’m going to give away Smoke & Mirrors and see what my friend thinks of it. I swear it totally disappeared on me.

  12. It’s so strange that it played Houdini on you! At least you didn’t spend an arm and a leg on it!!!

Oh boy! Thanks for saving me $$$.

  14. beautyin says:

Temptalia reviewed Foxy Browns today and gave it a C. She found it powdery and that it faded away.

  15. Your review is by no means mean… Just Honest, and that’s why your readers want to hear, Honesty, not advertisement! Great review!

  16. What your readers want to hear….

  17. beautyin says:

Thanks @Carol. I wanted to like these so I think that’s why I felt bad about it.

  18. Everytime I see these at walmart, the eyeshadows are out of their pans and just a big mess of powder in the package. Judging by this I thought the pigmentation and texture weren’t up to par. Your review has revealed the truth and the price is not that cheap for a “drugstore” product.

  19. beautyin says:

Olivia that would probably have saved me money!
