A long time ago, in what feels like another life, I went to the dermatologist every few months and she’d recommend a glycolic peel to take care of my skin problems. The process of it was great but I always left with a very red face and didn’t want to go anywhere afterward. When I stopped seeing that derm I also stopped having these done. I missed it but it would take a day or so to get my skin to calm down so I didn’t continue.
Now years later Ellen Lange Skin Science has entered my life with an offer to review her Retexturizing Peel Kit. Knowing how successful this was for other bloggers, I was thrilled to take the leap and use this. I’ve never done at “at home” peel before but my skin was begging for it.
In the kit you get everything you need to do 8 treatments. There’s a 2 oz Peel Prep Scrub, 60 Peel Accelerator Pad, 1.68 fl oz Glycolic Peel Solution plus a small measuring cup and the treatment brush. I only use 1 Peel Accelerator Pad per use so I have enough for many more peels!! The kit is $79 which makes my facial an $8 bargain plus I can purchase more of the Glycolic Peel Solution for $50. The peel is recommended to use once a week but the Pads can be used several times a week.
Step one – cleanse your face and then take a small scoop of the orange Peel Prep Scrub and apply it to your damp face. It’s recommended that you massage this gently in a circular motion for 30 – 60 seconds and then leave it on for another minute before rinsing clean and drying. This Peel Prep Scrub is a gentle exfoliator that has a great orange fragrance. I’d be happy to use this several times a week.
Step two – take one of the textured Peel Accelerator Pads and gently wipe it all over your face. This accelerates the exfoliation that you started with the scrub. This is where you’ll start to feel something. The Peel Accelerator Pads contain 5% Glycolic Acid. My skin isn’t used to this so I find it tingles when I go over my face with the pad. But each time I used the pads, the less it tingled. I don’t think I’ll ever have no tingling but it’s not unpleasant and it just lets me know that the product is working. This does have a chemical smell from the glycolic acid.
I find that pads like these are great to use to keep my pores from becoming clogged. These are stronger than others I’ve tried and they are making more difference in my skin than any others.
Last step: the actual Glycolic Peel Solution. This is the fun part yet this is what scared me a little too. The cup it comes with is big enough for 2 tablespoons but luckily 1 teaspoon of the creamy white solution is all you need. Pump it into the cup, then use the brush to cover your face. It becomes magical in its own special way. You leave this on your face for 2 – 3 minutes. It foams up gradually and is interesting to look at. I don’t really feel anything unusual when it’s on other than the foam tingling. The last step is to massage the foam into your face with damp fingers. It’s going to foam again and you’ll leave it on for about 5 more minutes. That’s it. It was so easy and not intimidating at all.
What’s the result? Soft skin that is actually clearer and less clogged. I’ve used this several times now and am always amazed how how clear and bright my skin looks. Here’s what Ellen Lange says and I couldn’t tell you any better:
Use this facial treatment to:
• Minimize fine lines and wrinkles
• Even skin tone
• Eliminate dry patches
• Minimize pore size
• Control periodic breakout
Ellen Lange Retexturing Peel Kit has made it onto my list of Top Ten Products for 2013. It’s made a great difference in my skin and is helping solve problems that I thought wouldn’t be solved on my own. Highly recommended! Have you ever done an at home peel? — Marcia
