On February 14th, aka Valentine’s Day, a new movie opened called Beautiful Creatures. It’s an adaption of a young adult book by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and is the first in a series called the Caster Chronicles. I haven’t read the book but from the little I know about the movie and book I see this as the new Twilight/Hunger Games . Here’s the Wikipedia synopsis of the movie: When newcomer Lena Duchannes arrives in the small town of Gatlin, she quickly captures the attention of Ethan Wate, who only wants to escape what he views as a boring and dead-end town. He quickly gets more than he bargained for, as Lena possesses strange powers that have long kept her at a distance from others in her life. Lena and Ethan are drawn together, but their budding romance is threatened by the dangers posed by Lena’s being a Caster and her family’s Dark powers, for upon her sixteenth birthday Lena must undergo the Claiming, a process that will decide her fate forever: Light or Dark.
What’s important to me is not the movie but the fabulous eyeshadow palette and kit from Pür Minerals: Limited Edition Collection Inspired by the film Beautiful Creatures. This set reeled me in with its mixture of dark and light. There are 8 eyeshadows, a nice size eyeshadow brush, a sheer pink gloss and a deep black eyeliner pencil. The names of the products are tied into the movie too. Forbidden (taupe), Supernatural (nude), Siren (moss), Spellbound (neutral), Fate (mushroom), Cursed (plum), Secret (pink) and Fantasy (violet). You read those and you instantly have the feel of what Beautiful Creatures is all about plus I knew without even seeing the eyeshadow palette that it contained colors I love. The gloss is named Lust while the eyeliner is named Black Magic.
Here’s my take on what you’ll get. I am crazy about every eyeshadow in the palette but of course I have my favorites. The very first eyeshadow on my brush was Fate. While Pür Minerals calls this mushroom I call it taupe so we’ll have to compromise and call it a mushroomy taupe. The pigment on this is fabulous and it’s a beauty with or without other shades in the palette.
My next favorite is Siren since I’m now totally attracted to green shades. This mossy green is another that I can wear with or without the others in the palette. I’ve been wearing it on the lid with Supernatural, a peachy nude, just above it in the crease and Spellbound, a matte neutral cream, on the browbone. Spellbound works for me with every shadow in the set.
I love deep purples with blue undertones so Cursed is another favorite of mine. My least favorite shade is Fantasy which is also purple but a more reddened purple. I can’t wear it alone but I can (and do) like to take my brush and pick up both Fantasy and Cursed and mix them. I’ll use this on the lid, then put Cursed in the crease giving it a gradient look. On the browbone with this intense look I’ll either use Secret which is a light matte pink or Spellbound.
Last but not least is Forbidden which Pür calls Taupe but I see more of a golden bronze. I think it looks super with the peachy tones of Supernatural. Depending on the brush you use with Forbidden you can make this as deep a brown as you want or use a fluffier brush and keep it more golden.
What’s so terrific about this palette, besides the beautiful colors and pigmentation, is that you get a good share of both light and dark shades. Nothing is sparkly or glittery yet they have a nice sheen to them. You can also build the darker shades if you want more drama.
To top it off you get a very glossy gloss in Lust. The color is quite light which isn’t everyone’s choice but wearing it over a lipstick will solve that. It’s that same theme of light and dark that way. The black eyeliner pencil, Black Magic, is a true deep black that smudges well before it sets. Even the eyeshadow brush in the kit is a winner. It’s got a lucite handle and picks up the colors nicely and blends them well. I like to use it for all but the crease shade.
This limited edition set is only $39. You absolutely can’t beat that price. Whether you are a fan of Beautiful Creatures the movie or book, you will be a fan of Beautiful Creatures by Pür Minerals. It’s available on their website or at Shoppers Drug Mart, Ulta and Ulta.com. Does this movie or palette appeal to you? Even if the movie gets blasted in the reviews, I can assure you that the eyeshadow palette and set gets top billing from me. — Marcia
