Ellis Faas Cosmetics is the first cosmetic line that seemed to change the paradigm of what was possible in cosmetics. Nothing about the line is the same as the other brands you are used to. Even what looks like a regular liquid liner is anything but typical. There are two eyeliners in the collection, Ellis Faas Eyeliner 501 (black) and Ellis Faas Eyeliner 502 (chocolate brown).
As with all things Ellis Faas, the eyeliners are unique since the shiny color you first apply changes into a matte finish. Ellis Faas’ website tells us that “A fabulous liquid liner that rapidly turns into a vibrant, unprecedented powdery finish while a high percentage of pigments results into an intense line of pure colour. And it stays until taken off with a cleanser.” I’ve started on a quest to find my favorite brown liquid eyeliners and along the way I’ve decided to add in favorite blacks too. When looking through my drawers I was excited to see these 2 eyeliners that Ellis Faas had sent for review.
The Ellis Faas eyeliner tip is very nice and easy to use but there is a caveat. You have to click, click, click to get the color to first come out, after you’ve got it started it’s not a problem. But the color comes out in the middle of the bristles. That means I keep something like my metal cosmetic palette or a small plastic spatula nearby and put the excess color on that. I’ll then pick up the liner from there and put it back onto the brush. If there’s too much of the liquid on the brush it won’t go on as smoothly as I like so that’s the solution I’ve found to work best.
I’d never before used a matte liquid liner so at first it took some getting used to the look. The color goes on very shiny at first and I thought I’d end up with a look that was almost patent leather-like so it was a surprise when it dried down matte. I like the look on my top lashline but I don’t care for it on my bottom lashline since I find it can crack on my old eyes. When I use these now I’ll use Ellis Faas on the top and a gel pencil liner on the bottom.
My big complaint in my last eyeliner review was finding a great brown shade. Ellis Faas happened to create a great brown. This is a true brown as opposed to the typical black-brown I’ve been finding. There is a touch of redness to it but I only see that on my hand, not on my eye. The eyeliner removes easily with my eye makeup remover as well as with a cleansing cloth. That’s when I see that touch of red again – in removal. If you are looking for a true brown that won’t show any blackness this is one you should consider.
Even though I was looking for brown, there’s nothing to sneeze at with this eyeliner in black. In fact I think I like it better in black. It’s a very dark black which I happen to like.
With the good though comes some things that aren’t perfect:
1) This is not an eyeliner for a newbie. If you aren’t adept at using liquid eyeliner, I wouldn’t start with this. I’d start with something inexpensive since sometimes it takes a little time to get it right.
2) The cost is $36 which is typical for an Ellis Faas product. I find that you either love or hate EF, there’s not much in between. If you love it then the price is fine.
3) The brush can splay BUT if you take care of it then you can avoid that problem. I clean it after every use. I either use a tissue or an Almay eye makeup remover pad and wipe it down. The brush doesn’t harden that way, I’ve reshaped it so it’s in the right shape and the next time I use it it’s ready after about 2 clicks to get the liquid out.
