All in the family with Zoya nail polish: Lisa, Rocky, Max, Marina, and Annie

You know what I think is the coolest thing about Zoya nail polishes?  The names.  The nail polish itself is terrific, but the names are so much fun.  Beyond Polish sent me two nail polishes with names from my family – Annie (my youngest daughter) and Lisa (that would be me).  I wanted to created a ‘family nail wheel’ so I bought three more polishes:  Max, the name of my oldest son; Marina, my second oldest; and Rocky, the family dog.

My Zoya family colors

My Zoya family colors

Just like my family, there are a variety of colors and personalities in my Zoya family nail wheel.  The only one missing is my husband – I wonder if I should email Zoya and ask them create a shade called Kevin?  It would have to be a color that would look amazing on a sports car or a racing bike.  I’m thinking maybe a black duochrome with red undertones.

My Zoya family nail wheel

My Zoya family nail wheel

I previously reviewed Zoya Lisa back in July when I picked it as my favorite red nail polish for the 4th of July holiday.  Lisa is a dark raspberry pink-toned candy apple red metallic foil micro-glitter nail polish (whew, that is a mouthful).

Zoya Lisa

I was so happy when I found that Zoya had a shade the same name as our beloved boxer, Rocky.  Rocky is a creme sky blue.

I had such a great time looking for my kids in the Zoya collections! The names of the Zoya shades are basically female names, but I found Max, which is the name of my son.  Not that he would wear it, but I certainly can!  Max is a light crimson-red with pink, coral and orange undertones.

Zoya Max

My teenage daughter Marina is very much an individual, so her namesake nail polish is absolutely perfect for her.  Marina is a blue-toned smoky silver-grey with a dusty metallic finish.

My youngest daughter Annie is going to back to school, so it’s the perfect time to review her namesake nail polish, Zoya Annie.  Annie is a saturated coral-orange with slight red undertones, strong gold shimmer and slight bright green duochrome.

The best eyeshadow, lip gloss, and nail polish for the Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July!  Here is a holiday cosmetics Rorschach test for you.  What do you see in this photo?

photo from sf.funcheap.com

photo from sf.funcheap.com

Did you say patriotic Elvis?  Or did you say inspiration for your Fourth of July cosmetics???

Since you read this blog, I am guessing the latter.  And I’m with you!  Here are my top red, white, and blue eyeshadows, lippies, and nail polishes.

Red white and blue!

All you need for the Fourth of July!

Let’s start with RED.

left to right:

left to right: Face Stockholm Pearl Eyeshadow 24, tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence lip cream in Promise; Zoya Nail Polish in Lisa

My red choices always tend to be on the ‘berry’ side of the realm.  Face Stockholm has the consummate raspberry red eyeshadow with Pearl Eyeshadow 24 – and yes, it does double duty as a blush.  It even does triple duty as a lip stain when mixed with some clear lip gloss.

Speaking of lippies, my most-loved red for this holiday is tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence Lip Creme in Promise.  This is a chubby lip creme that is self-sharpening and has a slightly minty taste.  It is a primo shiny strawberry red – not too warm or too cool.

My red nail polish choice is – but of course – Zoya in Lisa.  Lisa is the supreme 4th of July red – ruby-red with pink and red shimmer.  It’s fun and festive and not TOO over the top…just like me?  Maybe!

Next is WHITE.  All three of these products should be in every makeup artists bag.  Period.

left to right:

left to right:  Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies; Whitening Lightning Lip Gloss in Phuket; Cult Nail Polish in Tempest

The cream of the crop white eyeshadow is, hands down, Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies ($5.99).  This is a pure white matte shade that should be in everyone’s collection.

If you are looking for a true white lip gloss, Whitening Lightning Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss in Phuket Exotic ($24) is your answer.  This is an opaque white gloss that can be worn alone, or it can be mixed with other colors to create a lighter shade.

My go-to white nail polish is Tempest from Cult Nail Polish ($12).   It’s an absolute pure glossy white, and it looks great on its own or is, of course, perfect for nail art.

Last but not least, BLUE.

left to right;

left to right:  Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri; Whitening Lightning in Bahama; Lacquer Lust in Zircon

I adore blue eyeshadow with brown eyes, and my most cherished blue is Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri ($18). It is the loveliest sapphire blue I have ever seen.

My blue lippie choice is yet another from Whitening Lightning, this one is Bahama Exotic.  Yes, it’s a daring choice, but let me tell you that blue makes your teeth look super white!  If you can pull off blue, this is a lip gloss you need.

I have tons of blue nail polishes (can’t say that about lip products, ha!) so this was a difficult choice…but ultimately Laquer Lust’s Zircon ($12.50) won out.  This teal blue with microshimmer was part of the infamous Birthstone Collection, and lucky us it’s still available thanks to a relaunch!  The color is simply stunning, and the reflection from all those fireworks will only make it even better.

For those who would rather categorize by product type, here is the lowdown.

Beyond Polish brings you brands galore like Zoya & CND Vinylux (giveaway alert)

Beyond Polish is an online nail polish mecca. They carry brands that you already love like Zoya, Essie and China Glaze. But they also carry brands that are difficult to find like CND Vinylux, CND Shellac, Seche and Jessica. Then there are the brands that normally only professionals can get like LeChat, Harmony Gelish and ibd Just Gel Polish. It’s got the best of both worlds. And that world doesn’t stop with nail color, it continues with nail care like tools for nail art, glue, brushes and nail treatments.

We were happy to receive some polishes for review to show you the variety. Plus we are even happier that Beyond Polish is offering a giveaway.

LISA’S NAILS:

I like softer nail colors so I went pink, peach, then more pink! My first pink is CND Vinylux in Cake Pop ($5.95).

CND

CND Vinylux in Cake Pop

CND

CND Vinylux Cake Pop

Cake Pop is a milky, light cream pink. It is a lovely, ultra-feminine and mod pink shade. The CND Vinylux polishes are formulated to last as least a week without chipping and it doesn’t need a base coat.

Zoya

Zoya Clara

Next I chose Zoya in Clara ($6.50). Clara is a medium warm peach with terracotta undertones, plus golden shimmer. Oh my this is pretty. This is a perfect shade for a beach vacation or a cruise.

Zoya Angel

My final pick is the ultimate girly shade, Zoya Angel ($6.50). Angel is a cool metallic pink with lilac undertones and frosty pink and silver shimmer. I think this is my PERFECT soft shade – stunningly pretty and modest at the same time.  I guess all my picks are soft and feminine…I’ll bet Marcia doesn’t go subtle with her shades!

MARCIA’S NAILS:

Well Lisa is right about her prediction. I don’t go subtle. After biting my nails and being embarrassed about my hands for most of my life I wear bright and bold polishes. I love my nails and love showing them off. You may never see my face but you’ll see my nails!

I chose two shades from Beyond Polish and both are absolutely perfect for me. The first is Zoya Cyma. I surely don’t have to tell you about the quality of Zoya polishes. They last beautifully on me and I love how up to date Zoya is with their collections. Cyma is a permanent polish from Zoya, it’s a bright metallic red that’s totally opaque in two easy to apply coats.

Zoya Cyma

Zoya Cyma

Look at that shine in the bottle! It applies exactly like that on my nails too. It’s not shimmery or glittery but it’s bright and beautiful. I think Rudolph would like this one to have helped guide the sleigh on Christmas Eve.

I’ll let you in on a little secret – Cyma is $6.50 on Beyond Polish yet $8 on Zoya’s website.

My next choice was CND Vinylux in the color that I had been dying for ever since I first reviewed VinyluxGilded Pleasure.

This is the kind of shade I go a little crazy over. It’s gold – it’s green – it’s brass – it’s gold again. Even my nail tech went crazy over Gilded Pleasure when she saw it.

Lisa told you that CND Vinylux doesn’t need a base coat but to get premium wear out of the Vinylux polishes you really should have their top coat. That’s what seals the color so that it lasts. At the end of one week my nails looked absolutely perfect.

December Glossybox – hit or miss?

December Glossybox

December Glossybox

I’m sure sometimes people wonder why a subscription box like the December Glossybox I’m about to review is even being reviewed. After all you can’t buy it anymore. The reason that I personally do this is to show you what the box is like so you can make up your mind whether these subscription boxes are something you’d enjoy. I find that there’s usually something for everyone in Glossybox but is it enough to keep you or I spending our $21 a month?

December's theme card

December’s theme card

The December box theme is Glamour, Glitz & Gloss which I shall rename to Fragrance, Fragrance & Fun. You’ll see why with the contents. As many of you know the only fragrance maven on Beauty Info Zone is my blog partner Lisa. She’d love this box. But I’m not into fragrance at all so it’s rare that I rave about any. Usually they drive me crazy and this box is driving me crazy just opening it!

December's content card

Fragranced product 1 – Forest Essentials Luxurious Ayurveda is an after bath and shower oil moisturizer in Madural Jasmine and Magra. A full size would be $22 (6.8 oz) and this is a nice half size bottle that’s plastic sealed so it won’t spill. I can’t tell you anything about it other than that the blurb says it’s a subtle, seductive scent and that you apply it on wet skin to seal in moisture. (Personal fail but a nice product nonetheless.)

Fragranced product 2 –Heartland Fragrance Co Epsom Bath Salts, mine is in White Tea. I’ve seen other reviews with different fragrances. I know that Epsom Salts are great for relaxing baths. A 30 oz jar would be $10; this is a 5.5 oz bag so worth about $1.75. (Again personal fail but a nice product nonetheless; this is what I smell when I open the box I’m sure.)

Heartland Fragrance Co Epsom Bath Salts

Fragranced product 3 – Pleats Please by Issey Miyake which seems to be the hottest fragrance out there lately. It’s a small sample size like you’d get from Sephora. The regular size of 3.4 oz would run you $92 so if you love fragrance then you’d love having the chance to try this. It’s an exclusive USA online launch with Glossybox. (Again personal fail but you might like it.)

Sort of fragranced product 4: Mark Lipclick Luxe Lipstick in m.powerment petal which is a limited edition creamy rose lipstick developed to raise awareness for a powerful Woman’s cause. I’m surprised this sells for $12 since I always thought of Mark as less expensive. The color is pretty but there is a fragrance to this lipstick. (Semi fail since I like the color and can get past the smell with time – but I’d never have bought this.)

Mark Lipclick Luxe Lipstick in m.powerment petal

Missing product 5: In the brochure it shows a Wella Velvet Amplifier. It wasn’t in my box though so I don’t know anything about it. According to the SoFlaJo blog it’s a sample size serum. By the way her blog post is great especially if you like fragrance or even if you just want another opinion of the box plus she got some different items that look great. (Obviously a fail)

Not fragranced product finally!! Zoya nail polishes were in this month’s box with a variety of colors available. Mine is a very metallic gold called Ziv. SoFlaJo got Storm in one of her two boxes which makes me a little jealous. $8. (A win at last.)

Zoya Ziv nail polish

Not fragranced product again – this is the star product for me this month. There’s a piece of jewelry from JewelMint which is a subscription service for jewelry. They recommend pieces that match your personal style. What I received in my Glossybox is a long necklace that is midstomach length in brass and pewter. It has 16 “feather like” pieces as the embellishment. This is not a fail since I like long necklaces when I’m going to wear costume jewelry. It’s not a piece of jewelry I’d have picked out for myself but it’s nice. The price on JewelMint is $29.99 for this.

All in all I got my $21 worth with just the jewelry and polish. The fragranced products will be given away. (Are you all waiting for another BIZ Box giveaway?) I will continue with Glossybox for at least another month but I’m debating this – as I seem to do every month. If you bought this box please let me know what color Zoya polish you got and/or about your piece of jewelry.  I promise not to be too jealous. — Marcia

March’s Treats Under Ten: Fusion of Color, Zoya and Aveeno

This month we’re thinking green. Green as in color. Green as in saving green (aka money). Green as in using green, good for the earth products.

Green #1 (and 2 actually) belongs to Fusion of Color. For 2012 Fusion of Color is introducing a Color of the Month. For January it was Pantone’s Color of the Year coral as in Mango Tango. In February it was a beautiful shade of bright pink as in Amour pigment and Devotion lipgloss.

image from fusion of color

Now for March you get the beauty of Lucky Charm and Shamrock. Of course greens don’t surprise anyone in March since it’s not only St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th but it’s also the color of hope that spring is truly around the corner. Lucky Charm and Shamrock are two of Fusion of Color’s amazing pigments. Not only are they perfect for March but they are great all year with their beautiful clear colors. Lucky Charm is a soft green with some yellow undertones. This is the kind of green you are going to be seeing in the clothes of the season. Shamrock isn’t a kelly green as you might expect, instead it has a blue undertone. These two shades work together or apart. Shamrock can also be used as a liner (I like using Paula Dorf Transformer when I want to use a pigment as a liner.) While they look shimmery in the site pictures they really don’t look that way on my eyes.

Lucky Charm image from fusion of color

Shamrock image from fusion of color

If you aren’t already a subscriber to Fusion of Color’s monthly newsletter you want to do that now. This month not only do they have 10% off the already inexpensive price of $4.75 (making them $4.28) but if you spend $25 you’ll get a full size gloss in a peach that will possibly be the April Color of the Month. (Hint the magic word is leprechaun.)

Lucky Charm

Shamrock

Instead of raving about the quality of Fusion of Color again, you can read my original review and learn why I’m crazy about the company.

Green #2:  I needed a green nail polish to wear for March. I wasn’t swayed by the bright greens I saw at Ulta because I knew I’d wear it once for St. Paddy’s Day and never again. Instead I was drawn in by Zoya’s Yara. The beautiful smoky olive green polish has tiny flecks of gold in it. I like just holding the bottle and admiring the color. This is my new favorite color in makeup and I’d love an eyeshadow this shade. With an eyeshadow though I’d have to go look in the mirror to admire the pretty shade but on my nails I can look any time I want without appearing vain! Yara is part of a fall collection called Smoke and Mirrors and is part of the Mirror side. Zoya’s polishes wear beautifully for me. I love how smoothly they apply and how long they last. All Zoya’s products are “green” since they are non-toxic. Zoya was the first polish brand that removed toxic ingredients such as toluene, camphor, formaldehyde and DBP (dibutyl phthalate) from its formulations. They are $8 each so it’s a great Treat Under Ten.

Zoya Yara

Yara outside

Green #3 is Aveeno. There are many Aveeno products that I love but I’ll concentrate on my latest favorite, Positively Nourishing Energizing Body Lotion in Pomegranate+Grapefruit. This refreshing smelling lotion is just what I need for my winter weary legs plus it’s a great inexpensive hand cream. It’s got a very light tart fragrance and is amazingly moisturizing. It’s formulated with natural grapefruit and pomegranate too.

image from aveeno.com

Aveeno Energizing Pomegranate + Grapefruit

ingredients

Aveeno has two new formulas in their Positively Nourishing Collection: the above mentioned Energizing Body Lotion in Grapefruit+Pomegranate and their Calming Body Lotion in Lavender and Chamomile. The Calming Lotion was formulated with those two scents since they are soothing. To complete the line Aveeno Positively Nourishing has 5 different Body Washes. Two are infused with antioxidants (Blackberry + Vanilla; White Peach + Ginger); a hydrating wash (fig); a smoothing wash (pomegranate); and a calming wash (lavender, ylang-ylang and chamomile). All of these products are between $6 and $7 and often on sale for less. Aveeno is known for using natural ingredients and being recommended by dermatologists and pediatricians.

So there you have my GREENies for March – beautiful eyes, fabulous nails and soft smooth skin made by trusted companies that care about your skin and what you use on it. – Marcia

My latest nail polish favorites – Le Metier, Rococo, Zoya, RBL and Orly

I really love new nail polish. I get a thrill out of wearing a new color or finding a new favorite. I’ve got a few that I haven’t shown before that I want to share with you.

My newest polishes are the ones from Le Metier de Beaute’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. When I first saw them I was sure that the cherry red would turn out to be my favorite but instead it’s the chocolate one, Chrome Passion. I adore this polish. In some lights it’s chocolate, in some lights it’s charcoal and it SPARKLES!! There was a cult favorite from OPI called My Private Jet that had this holographic sparkle but then they changed it. If you missed that polish then you really don’t want to miss this set to get Chrome Passion. My photos show both looks you’ll find when wearing this amazing polish.

When I was at Space NK in Newport Beach (inside Bloomingdale’s) I instantly gravitated to the Rococo nail polish display. I’d read so much about those polishes so seeing them in person was a thrill. It was really hard to walk away with only one polish but I was trying to be restrained since it was the first day of our trip to California. Now of course I’m lusting after others in the collection. Rococo is a cult brand in the UK so that made it even more appealing to me. What I bought is called POP CULTURE and it’s a perfect year round shade. The cherry red of this is perfect for both manicures and pedicures and I think suits many skintones. It turns out that it’s the color that our hostess Patty owned and our coloring is like night and day.

Applying this nail polish was a dream. My nail tech was so impressed with the quality of it and the brush. We noticed that I could have gotten away with one coat of it but I prefer two. As I’m typing this I’m on day 10 of the manicure and I have tip wear only. I’ll remove it soon so that I can play with my collection but I know it would look good until my next manicure (at the 14th day mark). They aren’t cheap polishes ($16.50) but the quality is wonderful. Plus the box it comes in is a packaging delight. Pop Culture is a cream formula. You can buy Rococo through Teri at SpaceNK. 949-729-6803; tc2@spacenk.com

Sometimes when I buy a nail polish it’s because the color is so gorgeous that I can’t resist. I’ll know it’s a totally wrong shade for me but I’ll want it anyway. That was the case with Orly Rage. I adore the color. It’s a rose gold shade with small specks of silver. It’s stunning BUT it’s so wrong for my hands. I brought it to my appointment recently and my nail tech put it on her nails and it was fabulous with her olive coloring. But I have a lot of red in my hands so it wasn’t quite right. I was determined though and we started experimenting. If I’m not 100% sure of what shade polish to wear I bring about 4 with me and luckily that was the case this time. I had brought a chrome purple shade by BYS called Chrome Violet (an Australian nail polish company)  so we decided to see how one coat of that looked with Orly Rage over it.

Call it love. It not only was fabulous looking and received oodles of compliments but it looked almost perfect 2 weeks later when I went for another manicure. I know now that experimenting with layers is the way to go with colors that weren’t perfect for me. I don’t remember exactly how much Rage cost but I found mine at Sally Beauty and I believe it was under $5. This is metallic nail polish at its best.

Speaking of purples, here’s one I love ZOYA CAITLIN. It’s a dark lavender with a gray undertone. Here’s Zoya’s description which is the opposite of my description: Smoky purple-tinged medium gray with smooth, opaque creme finish. Zoya wears like iron on me and of course it is free of all the bad guys.

Zoya Kelly is a rich gray shade with soft purple and blue undertones. I tend to wear this in the cooler weather.

Here’s one last polish that I’m in love with: Rescue Beauty Lounge Insouciant. OMG, this is a gorgeous polish. This applies like a dream and looks stunning for 2 weeks on me. Here’s Ji’s picture with mine underneath. In hers you can see the subtle shimmer which you’ll notice when you wear this. It’s sold out but you can vote for it to be brought back and you should!

As you can see, these are all just beautiful. Do you own any of these? I’d love to know. — Marcia
