Shiny and glowy Makeup Wars

Makeup Wars time. It’s been a while since I shared my thoughts on MW and this time I’m only sharing half of the subject: bronzers and glowy items. I’m a glowy person (at times) and rarely bronze. Pale is okay around here though every once in a while a bronzer sneaks in the back door. Onto my most used “glows” lately.makeup wars glowy open

PAT McGRATH LABS, SKIN FETISH 003 NUDE

Don’t hate me because this is beautiful and s.o.l.d. out. It didn’t take long to sell out and when I reviewed it I warned you. At first I wasn’t sure if I’d made a mistake buying this or not but the powder is so pretty and so hard to resist. It also comes with a buffing brush (I don’t use it though) and a Shiny Stick highlighter and balm duo. This is here to remind us all, don’t underestimate Pat McGrath and don’t wait.

URBAN DECAY AFTERGLOW POWDER HIGHLIGHTER in AURA

With pink being my favorite color, when Urban Decay came out with the beautiful Afterglow Highlighters, I had to buy Aura. It’s pink perfection without being over the top. Aura is a light pink iridescent powder that gives me a radiant look. It’s subtle unless I build it up but I prefer using it as an all over glow applied lightly with a stippling brush or as a cheek highlighter over my blush. I like it on my browbone too so it’s getting more use than just as a highlighter. These are only $26 and not limited edition but that doesn’t mean that it’ll be around forever.

TOM FORD SKIN ILLUMINATING DUO in MOODLIGHT

The name of this duo is confusing at best. On Nordstrom’s website they call it Moonlight and I think I might have too when I first wrote about it. Even though Moodlight is $80, in the long run it’s saved me money. I often crave beautiful products that I don’t use often enough. This gorgeous powder duo reminds me I don’t need more. Described as “a soft white shade is like the luminous glow of daylight and a radiant golden shade is like the romantic illusion of candlelight. These lightly shimmering shades can be applied individually or layered together to create a multidimensional glow” Moodlight gives me the golden tones I want especially with complimentary eyeshadows.

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE UNDER EYE in ILLUMINATION

This might seem like an odd fit here and in a way it is. I’m a big fan of Bye Bye Eye and when I received this in Illumination (in Light) I wasn’t sure about it. I don’t really want anything shiny under my eyes. But this became a surprise favorite once I saw how much brighter my under eye area looked. I use it sparingly, unlike my swatch, after foundation is on. It contains Drops of Light Technology™ for added radiance and a lit-from-within glow. As with all IT Cosmetics facial products it has anti-aging ingredients. To top it off, it’s waterproof which certainly helps on these 90 degree days.

SENNA BRILLIANT BRONZE BAKED MINERAL BRONZER & HIGHLIGHTER in DAWN

A bronzer isn’t on my face very often but every once in a while that paleness can get to me and I want to fit in with the crowd that worships bronzers. One of my favorites is by Senna which you just don’t hear enough about. Brilliant Bronze is available in three combinations: Dawn (light bronze & seashell pink highlighter), Sunset (deep bronze & golden highlighter), and Gold Star (sparkling yellow gold & champagne highlighter). It is a shimmery option which makes it bronze AND glowy. It’s a combination of warmth and illumination. I love the description that Senna gives: “This delicate mineral veil contains specially cultivated fresh water pearls with amino acids and proteins to hydrate and nourish skin, keeping it luxuriously soft and smooth.

While I have many more highlighters and even bronzers, these are the ones I wear these days. What about you? What are your favorites? —  Marcia

Color Correctors – splurge or steal?

Color Correctors - splurge or steal?

Color Correctors – splurge or steal?

Lately it seems that all we hear about are makeup trends. We spent months obsessing over contouring, we moved on to strobing, we’re stuck on highlighters and illuminators, and now we’ve got color correctors coming at us like gang busters. Color Correcting isn’t new but it’s having its day right now.

I remember years and years ago that Physician’s Formula had little tubes of color correctors that were very inexpensive. It made the brand more noticeable because no one else had anything like it. I remember finally caving when it was on sale for about $2 – and being disappointed. I wasn’t as experienced with cosmetics and I didn’t understand enough about blending.

Move forward to 2016 and Sephora has been tempting me with Color Correctors as have other brands. Here are some I’ve bought at different price points.

WET n WILD COVERALL CORRECTING PALETTE ($3.99) A steal!

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

I picked this up at Walgreen mainly because I knew that Makeup Wars was writing about this subject plus I wanted to see how an inexpensive color corrector would compare to the more expensive ones. This is the one to purchase if you are curious and don’t want to splurge. But it’s not the best out there unless you want the purple (to counter dullness) and green (to correct red).

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

The yellow is called Cover but it doesn’t cover anything on me; it’s meant to cancel out bruises or undereye circles. The white is their Highlighter but it’s pretty weak. Purple is what they call Normalize while they name the green Neutralize. The texture is very thick so you need to apply it with a light hand and blend it well.

PIXI CORRECTION CONCENTRATE, BRIGHTENING PEACH ($12) Save!

This was one of my first correctors and I fell in love with it. The matte peach is very brightening and is great under my eyes to help with my dark circles. It has great ingredients:

  • Rose Hip Extract has great cell regenerating and skin elasticity boosting properties
  • Vitamin A provides an anti-aging effect
  • Vitamin C brightens and revitalizes
  • Vitamin E nourishes and protects

The price is right and other than the small opening on the pot it’s excellent.

BECCA UNDER EYE BRIGHTENING CORRECTOR ($30) Splurge

If you follow me on Beauty Info Zone you know this is a favorite. This is a light and bright pink with a soft creamy finish. While it’s technically not a concealer, I don’t need one when I use this. I like the bigger opening on the jar and I like the consistency of the corrector. Some days it’s a little too bright for me if my dark circles are rearing their ugliest head.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correctors in Peach & Pink, Sephora Bright Future Color Corrector in Green

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correctors in Peach & Pink, Sephora Bright Future Color Corrector in Green

SEPHORA COLLECTION BRIGHT FUTURE COLOR CORRECTOR in GREEN ($14) Save

While the Sephora brand Bright Future Color Correctors come in 5 shades, they are always sold out. Right now the green and yellow are available online but once the pink and peach come in, they sell out instantly. That’s because the price is half that of the similar Urban Decay Color Correctors. The main difference that I see between the two brands is the applicator. Sephora Collection’s isn’t quite as nice and less comes out so you work a little harder. It’s definitely green and it applies dark at first but using a sponge I can blend it down easily. I use it by my nostrils and just under where I have the most redness and spot treat other areas. They key is to blend but not RUB away.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correctors in Peach & Pink, Sephora Bright Future Color Corrector in Green

URBAN DECAY NAKED SKIN COLOR CORRECTING FLUID in PEACH & PINK ($28) Splurge

I first bought this in Peach and liked it so much I went back for the Pink. The consistency of these is great for correcting, they’re soft and blend extremely well without a lot of work. They are what’s getting the most use in my correcting routine these days. The Peach looks very orange at first but it blends down enough to cover dark circles without showing as orange. Pink is meant to brighten dark areas. I sort of say “eeny meeny” to decide which to use each day. A sponge is the tool I prefer with these. I first warm them with my finger then use my sponge to softly blend these.

MAKE UP FOR EVER 5 CAMOUFLAGE CREAM PALETTE ($40) Splurge

Make Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

Make Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

I bought this palette when I was freelancing, as you can see it’s unused and I didn’t swatch it. It is really more of a concealing palette but the colors are mostly too dark for me. This is #1 the lightest one (for light to medium skin tones with redness concerns) and there are 5 total. I probably should have bought #5 (pro palette featuring color correcting shades for most skin tones and highlighter/concealer) since it’s more for correcting than concealing.

FACE STOCKHOLM CORRECTOR QUAD ($32) Splurge

Face Stockholm Corrector Quad

Face Stockholm Corrector Quad in Ljus

The Face Stockholm Corrector Quad came in a Wantable subscription and was one of the highlights of my years long subscription. Ljus is the lightest of the 3 Corrector Quads available. Mine has been used too much to photograph but I really did like having this all in one quad. While I didn’t get much use out of the yellow I did from the other 3 shades.

As you can see, I’m fascinated with these type of products and totally obsessed with them lately. While this craze has cost me a lot lately, I’m enjoying using all of these (well not the MUFE which I haven’t broken into yet). It’s hard to recommend just one but to save money you might want to look at the Sephora Collection colors or a quad like Face Stockholm’s.

What do you like for color corrector? I’m always up for more.  — Marcia

Splurge vs Steal with Urban Decay, Covergirl, NYC Lovatics, Makeup Revolution USA

close up of usa dollar money and piggy bank

It’s time for a new Makeup Wars and I’m excited about this one. I can’t wait to read what the other bloggers have chosen as their SPLURGE vs STEAL items. For my edition I decided to stick with neutral palettes since they are so popular. Urban Decay Naked palettes started the craze with Too Faced Chocolate Bar and Chocolate Bon Bons following. At $54 and $49 respectively it’s hard to own all the ones you are interested in…. so here comes the steals.

I read this type of article often in magazines and the first thing that comes to my mind is the question of Quality. Yes, two items may look similar, but is the steal something you’d want to wear/use? I have made sure that my steals are ones that I can recommend without question.

URBAN DECAY is the brand that I believe has led the way into the neutral revolution. They have excellent marketing and know how to get the word out with some cutting edge products. Just look at how they’ve promoted the Gwen Steffani items! People are going nuts over them. Also their Naked palettes don’t go out of favor. When I was pulling this together I realized that I can’t find my Naked Basics and Naked 2. Just because they are older doesn’t make them any less relevant and now I’m thinking about purchasing them. I looked to see how to compare my ‘steals’ to my Urban Decay and Too Faced. I hope I’ve succeeded.

NYC Lovatics by Demi

NYC Lovatics by Demi

NYC Cosmetics has a new collection in collaboration with Demi Lovato. I received several items that I’ll be reviewing in full and I’m loving them. This $6.99 palette LOVATICS BY DEMI is incredible and a perfect match for the original URBAN DECAY NAKED PALETTE. $6.99. vs $54. Now that’s what I call a Splurge vs Steal. When you find this at Walmart, Target or wherever NYC is sold, grab it before it’s too late.

URBAN DECAY NAKED 3 vs ULTA ROSE GOLD PALETTE

These two are so close that I can blindly reach for either to achieve the same looks. This is a $54 vs $20 Splurge vs Steal except that Ulta’s palette is always on sale and you can use their coupons. This particular week all ULTA products are buy 2 get 2 free, last week this palette was $12.

MAKEUP REVOLUTION USA AFFIRMATION vs URBAN DECAY SMOKY and TOO FACED CHOCOLATE BONBONS

There are 32 eyeshadows in MAKEUP REVOLUTION’S AFFIRMATION PALETTE. This Ulta exclusive is $15 with BOGO 1/2 currently going on. It’s also available with the $3.50 coupon that Ulta advertises. I had to seek out two palettes to match up with the AFFIRMATION palette because it has so many versatile shades.

Makeup Revolution Affirmation palette

Makeup Revolution Affirmation palette

Urban Decay Naked Smoky contains these shades: champagne shimmer micro-glitter, medium bronze, metallic taupe iridescent micr-glitter, metallic silver taupe tonal sparkle, light metallic gray, medium charcoal micro glitter, jet black satin, deep plum taupe, cool taupe matte, rich brown matte, soft pink taupe and light beige satin. Look at the above picture – recognize those shades?

Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons contains these shades: matte mauve, cool greige, matte suede, matte plum brown, gilded rose, electric fuchsia pearl, cherry cola shimmer, satin nude, smokey sapphire, deep metallic amethyst, gilded cocoa, metallic taupe, metallic cocoa bronze, and matte warm cream. You can find duplicates of all these shades in the Makeup Revolution Affirmation palette too.

While I love my Urban Decay palettes I shudder thinking about how much money they’ve cost me. Makeup Revolution USA Affirmation isn’t as pigmented as UD and TF but I end up with the same colors and looks. I’m the only one that knows that the Affirmation palette costs a fraction of the other too.

COVERGIRL TRUNAKED NUDES

Covergirl trunaked Nudes

Covergirl trunaked Nudes

Last is the Covergirl trunaked Nudes palette which is a beautiful rendition of a nude palette. The colors are exactly what you need to create daily looks as well as smoky eyes. The palette sells for approximately $12.99 but you can find sales on it. Currently at Ulta it’s $11.98 with a BOGO 1/2 on Covergirl products. I have been blown away by the color and quality of this palette.

I think these steals are pretty fabulous and the true definition of Splurge vs Steal without compromising quality. What’s your favorite steal?  –  Marcia

Summer Beauty with IT Cosmetics, Pur Minerals, Gabriel eyeshadow, Mally and more

Beautysets - Summer Beauty
It’s Tuesday and that means Top Ten Tuesday. Today’s topic is summer beauty. My choices are 10 items (or more) that I know I’ll be using all summer. I started this by deciding what I’d take with me for a long summer weekend away. I just included cosmetics, not skincare, or this would be all about sunscreen. The ten items I picked are ones I’m enjoying and I’d happily put in my cosmetic bag.

1.  URBAN DECAY MINOR SIN PRIMER POTION – I chose Minor Sin since it does double duty for me. It’s both an eyeshadow primer and a color product. It works great under the eyeshadow I’d bring and it works beautifully on its own for a simple look. It’s a champagne shimmer that’s sheer.

2. GABRIEL COSMETICS EYESHADOW TRIO IN SMOKEY SHIMMER* Eyeshadow Trios are new to Gabriel Cosmetics and I am loving Smokey Shimmer. It’s very versatile and won’t take up much room. I’ll be able to get a few different looks with this depending on whether it’s night or day. I’ll have a full review of this soon.

3.  PHYSICIANS FORMULA Eye Booster™2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum is my new favorite eyeliner. I have searched so long for the perfect brown liquid eyeliner. I’ve found several brands I really like (at last) but this is the one I can’t put down. A perfect brown, an easy to use felt tip point, a great price, and very long lasting. I plan to buy another at the next sale.

4.  DV LIGHT UP MASCARA*  (DV stands for Dakota Vox) This mascara not only gives me long separated lashes but it lights up and has a mirror on it. Perfect for a getaway or any time. So far I haven’t lit it up but I’ve been using this daily and I love the way my lashes look. It doesn’t clump and it doesn’t smudge. It’s easy to remove which I’ve been appreciating lately because I’ve had to rub my eyes too much with other mascaras. The silicone brush deposits the pigment easily and evenly.

5. IT COSMETICS EYELIFT IN A TUBE should be no surprise to anyone since I love my IT Cosmetic items. This isn’t one that I’ve written about but it’s one I use all the time. This two sided beauty has a wand of Bye Bye Under Eye on one side and Hello Light™ Liquid Brightener on the other. Dab a little of the Liquid Brightener on and you look ready to hit the town.

6.  PUR MINERALS CC CREAM* is one of my favorites that I don’t mention enough. It has SPF 40 so it’s a good addition to whatever other sunscreen I’m using. I love the coverage. Lately I’ve been applying it with a kabuki brush but I can easily use my fingers. I have it in Light and the shade is great for me. Why I’d take this with me is that I don’t have to follow up with a powder.

Pur Minerals CC Cream

7.  PUR MINERALS CHATEAU CHEEKS CREAM BLUSH* are just a few of the cream blushes I love. What makes this summer beauty worthy is that it’s firm to the touch so it means that they won’t melt away. It only comes in two colors (Coy and Flirty) but they are both excellent. Both work great with the Gabriel Smokey Shimmer Eyeshadow Trio I picked.

8.  IT COSMETICS HELLO LIGHT™ RADIANCE POWDER* is perfect for me to use in the summer. It’s not sparkly, there’s no glitter, there’s just glow. It can be used anywhere you need highlighting or it can be used as a finishing powder. There’s a light golden glow to it. Another IT Cosmetics favorite!

9.  MALLY EVERCOLOR LIP MAGNIFIER* – it was difficult to pick from my lip crayon loves but Mally doesn’t get talked about enough and I love these lip crayons. The coverage is great, they are very smooth and there’s some lip plumping going on. My favorite is Princess Pink but there are 14 different shades at Ulta.com so you’ll surely find one you love.

10.  HARD CANDY ALL GLOSSED UP HYDRATING LIP STAIN* is the $5 alternative to Mally or Tarte lip crayons. On Walmart.com there are just a few shades available but there are more when you go in person. These are just like the name states – hydrating, glossy and lightly staining. It wears away evenly on me but I’ve only tried a Cupcake which is pink so I don’t know about darker shades.

Here’s my 10 but now that I’m done I realize I should have included so much more, including nail polish. I guess you’ll have to keep coming back for more posts.

On Saturday March 21st Ulta’s Daily special is 50% off Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. Now you all know about Primer Potion but did you know you can get the original for only $10 on 3/21?  UD PP (as we lovingly call it) was the first eyeshadow primer to catch our attention and drive us wild. It sold out so quickly that Ulta couldn’t keep it in stock. Urban Decay has upped the ante with other Primer Potions and they’ve improved the packaging since the beginning. It never goes bad so if you are like me, you’ll want to stock up. I was sent this particular one and I have the Anti-Aging Eye Shadow Primer Potion that will be $12 that day. I need another and want to try out Eden which is new. My shadows need UD Primer Potion for lasting power and vibrancy.

A Makeup Wars special – Urban Decay and a giveaway

This is a special edition of Makeup Wars and you are going to love it. We are focusing on Urban Decay this week and the bloggers involved have decided to have a super giveaway for Urban Decay eyeshadows for our readers. Please visit all the blogs that are involved in today’s Makeup Wars to silently (or verbally) thank them for their contribution so that one of you can win the prize noted in the Rafflecopter.

Urban Decay eyeshadow in X

Urban Decay eyeshadow in X

I picked the shade X as the color I wanted to be included in this giveaway. X is one of my long time favorites from Urban Decay because it’s a duochrome shadow. We don’t find a lot of duochrome shadows out there so when we do then it’s time to celebrate.

Urban Decay X

Urban Decay X

Sephora describes X as “peach shimmer with gold shift”. I also see a small amount of pink in it but it’s definitely a peachy pink. This is one of my favorite lid shades since it brightens up my eyes and makes me feel more wide awake looking. X is a color that I feel will work with all eye colors.

People mostly talk about Urban Decay’s premade palettes but there’s more to UD than just those. You can put together your own palette with the colors that you choose. It is more expensive that way but it’s also a great way to get exactly what you want.

I bought my palette a few years ago when Urban Decay changed their singles to be removable. At the time they had a case for $18 that included the color Walk of Shame which is a great light beige neutral. Unfortunately they never sold Walk of Shame separately and they now only sell the palettes with slots for 4 shades. I’m really glad I bought mine at that time. The colors I chose for my palette above are Walk of Shame, X, Stray Dog, Snare, Twice Baked and my mangled YDK. (YDK is from old packaging and was difficult to get out of the tin.)
