Peace, love, and great skin with The Organic Pharmacy

Organic Pharmacy
With the crazy circus of politics these days, simply scrolling through Facebook stresses me right into a horrible – and so ironic – combination of wrinkles and acne. So I step away from the media and step into some organic self-care to get back my peace and love vibe.

The Organic Pharmacy was created by a homeopathic pharmacist. The first store opened in 2002 in London, with the first US store opening in Los Angeles in 2008. The array of products in this line is amazing – you can find skin care for every type of skin, body products for your head to your toes, bath soaks and shower gels, shampoos and conditioners, baby products, tinctures, homeopathic remedies…the list goes on and on. The Organic Pharmacy says, “We still stick with our strong principles and pride ourselves on the passion that we share for quality, efficacy and above all a dedication to you. We hope that we have shown the world it is possible to choose an organic product that is beautiful to look at, luxurious to use and more effective than its synthetic counterparts without compromising your health or beauty.”

I haven’t tried anything from them yet that I didn’t think was terrific and I have four favorites to share with you today in the spirit of positivity!
Organic Pharmacy Herbal Toner
The Herbal Toner ($65) is fabulous. I use this as a toner, and also as a spritz of moisture that is especially wonderful on hot, sunny days. It has 18 organic herbs that work together to keep skin healthy. It reduces pore size while also lifting and hydrating skin. It smells like fresh oranges, which is an instant relaxer and de-stresser.

Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter CleanserOrganic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser

The Carrot Butter Cleanser ($74) is a very unique cleanser. This is a balm that melts right into your skin, lifting makeup and dirt right out of your life. No need for a separate eye makeup remover either, because it melts off even the smokiest of eyes.

Infused with Rosemary, Carrot and Shea Butter, the skin is left comfortable, incredibly soft and radiant. Chamomile and Lavender soothe and calm both skin and mind.

Once you smooth on the balm, you wipe it off using a hot, wet muslin cloth. The results are awesome – clean, glowy, hydrated skin. The Carrot Butter Cleanser is one of The Organic Pharmacy’s best-selling products and it should be on your list to try.

Organic Pharmacy Lip and Eye CreamOrganic Pharmacy Lip and Eye Cream

I also love the Lip & Eye Cream ($48). This is a beautiful cream that soothes skin, reduces puffiness, and lightens dark circles. Because it’s hydrating, it reduces the look of fine lines and makes for a wonderful lip moisturizer. The ingredient list includes Shea butter, bilberry, evening primrose, rose hip and frankincense. I pat some on under my eyes, then use what’s left over on the sides of mouth and on my lips. You really only need a teensy amount so the tube lasts forever.

Organic Pharmacy Antioxidant Lip BalmOrganic Pharmacy Antioxidant Lip Balm

I can’t rave enough about the Antioxidant Lip Balm ($21.50). I love, love, love this beautiful balm. Ingredients include Shea Butter, pomegranate, rose hip and Vitamin E. The balm leaves my lips so soft and hydrated thanks to the Shea butter and Vitamin E. The pomegranate and rose hip are excellent antioxidants that fight free radicals while also calming and soothing dry or cracked lips. This balm is the bomb.

It’s getting pretty crazy and very stressful out there. Be sure to take care of yourself. The Organic Pharmacy is a great way to get some peace, love, and great skin.  – Lisa

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex review

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

Skincare is a funny thing. We all react differently to products. Take my blog partner Lisa and I. We don’t always like the same skincare. She is more hardcore with what she uses while I use a more laid back approach. Lisa is used to skincare with retinols and glycolic acid while I’m cautious about products that contain this.

The reason I’m telling you this is that DDF Glycolic Toning Complex was originally a product that Lisa was going to review, but here I am using it and writing about it after it was sent. While this didn’t agree with her younger, oilier complexion it does with my more aging and dry one.

DDF (Doctors Dermologic Formula) was created by Dr. Howard D. Sobel, a dermatologist who wanted his patients to be able to take care of their skin at home to protect against the signs of aging. Glycolic Toning Complex is part of the DDF Anti-Aging Preventative line meant as a Treatment.

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

Dr. Sobel created a daily toning complex with Salicylic Acid and a 7% concentration of Ultra Pure Glycolic acid, which is one of the highest grade glycolic acids on the cosmeceutical market today. I honestly was surprised that my skin, not being used to glycolics, would react as well to this toner as it does.

There are 3 main goals with this:

  • Refines skin’s texture by decreasing the look of large pores
  • Helps to minimize fine lines & wrinkles
  • Promotes skin clarity and immediately revitalizes skin’s appearance
DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

Since DDF’s Glycolic Toning Complex uses Salicylic Acid I’ve chosen to use this at night only. I’m using a more gentle AHA in the daytime and always apply sunscreen over it, at night I’ll use this DDF one several times a week after cleansing.

There’s a menthol fragrance to it that is gone quickly so there are no worries there. What I like most is that this helps keep my pores cleaner and not clogged. It’s also helping with my anti-aging goals of staying youthful forever (and a day).

Formulated with skin conditioners, Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel for a safe, daily clean. Sodium Hydroxide stabilizes pH balance for a clear healthy complexion. The natural scent of Peppermint awakens the senses.

GLYCOLIC ACID – Glycolic acid is the most effective fruit acid for exfoliation and skin renewal. It has the smallest molecular structure of all AHAs, thus possesses the greatest penetration potential.

DDF Glycolic Toning Complex

Since I’ve been using this I’ve noticed that my skin is looking brighter so maybe the surface cell turnover is actually working. I’m happy to be in the Preventative stages of DDF Skincare and not ready for the Restorative.

Skincare 101 – my Paula’s Choice regimen

Paula's Choice Resist line - my personal regimen

Paula’s Choice Resist line – my personal regimen

Makeup Wars is always a favorite for me. If you haven’t been hanging around Beauty Info Zone then you might not know that Makeup Wars is when a group of bloggers choose a topic and we all post about the same general idea. But the articles are so varied since we are all coming from different places in our life. Skincare 101 is a most exciting post because I know that I’m going to learn so much from the other “warriors” and what they are going to share.

I’m sharing my Paula’s Choice Resist products that I received from #PRIMP, Pretty in my Pocket, after a wonderful phone consultation. I’ve loved and used Paula’s Choice products for years. But the line has gotten so big that I was at a loss as to what I really should be using. I read the descriptions and everything sounds wonderful. The phone consult which takes between 10 and 15 minutes and is free to all, is perfect. Your representative discusses your skin type, age, skin concerns, and what you want to work on and then creates your own personal regimen. You can then pick out which items you want to start with or wait for another day. I recommend that you don’t wait though. I’ve been using my PC Resist products for 4 months now and don’t intend to stop. I’ll add in other lines that I want to review but I’ve always gone back to Paula’s Choice.

For this review you need to know that I’ve got skin that used to be combination but is now on the dry side, especially in cold weather. My concerns are keeping my face looking as youthful as possible while dealing with large pores, fine lines, and firmness.

Paula's Choice Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser and Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner

Paula’s Choice Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser and Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner

I use both the Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser and Advanced Replenishing Toner morning and evening. There are other cleansers in the Resist line but for my needs (and advancing age) I needed one that is gentle and hydrating. This is a lotion that cleanses my skin and removes any facial makeup without stripping my skin of essential oils. While it works for all skin types it’s especially recommended for normal to dry.

The Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner is a step that I often resist. There’s so much misinformation around about using a toner and it’s often skipped but it can be an essential step in balancing your skin and keeping it well preserved (and not pickled). This toner is one for anti-aging which can be seen in the ingredients. It helps build collagen for firmer skin, it contains anti-irritants to calm redness, and it has licorice extract & acetyl glucosamine to improve skin tone. The packaging is hard plastic so you can’t really squeeze it out, you pour it onto a cotton pad and there’s never too much that comes out. It removes all vestiges of makeup. It’s great after using a cleansing cloth if you are too tired to use a soap and water cleanser since it removes all the residue from the cloth.

Paula's Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment and Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer

Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment and Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer

After cleansing and toning I use Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment and Resist Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer. These are daytime only for me because of the ingredients in them.

The Resist Daily Smoothing Treatment with 5% AHA contains glycolic acid which gently exfoliates and protects your skin’s barrier. This was chosen for me because it helps fade sun damage. I’m a firm believer in SPF but that’s not how I was brought up. I apply this AHA treatment as soon as I’ve finished with the two cleansing products. I like it to sink into my skin while I’m putting on my eye makeup. This is a light yellow creamy lotion that makes my skin feel very soft. I love anything that helps me correct my uneven skintone so this is a definite rebuy for me.

Resist Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer w/Broad Spectrum SPF 25 is the only moisturizer I took on a recent trip. I was packing light and this tube was exactly what I needed. I used it both day and night but at home I just use this during the day. Cellular Defense Daily Moisturizer fits all the things I’m looking for in a daytime product: fragrance-free, broad spectrum sunscreen (mineral based), works as an anti-aging product, contains antioxidants, and my foundation never balls up when using this PC sunscreen.

Paula's Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer and Resist BHA 9

Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer and Resist BHA 9

Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer and her Resist BHA 9 are the two products I use only at night. After cleansing and toning I first apply Resist BHA 9 and let it work its magic on my skin. This thin tube is totally different than the other BHA I have from Paula’s Choice. I laughed when I got this because it’s subtitled as “for stubborn imperfections” which describes my life to a tee. This is actually a product that’s good for so many of us as it is a concentrated salicylic acid spot treatment to tackle the most stubborn imperfections for dramatic results without irritation. It’s to be used for acne breakouts, Anti-Aging, blackheads, enlarged pores, and keratosis pilaris. Being stubborn myself I use this all over my face and not as a spot treatment. My main goal with this is for my enlarged pores and anti-aging. I am seeing a difference on the pores on my cheeks, especially when I apply cream blush. During Christmas there were so many deals popping up that I bought a set containing this BHA so I wouldn’t run out. It has a slightly oily feel to it. I’ve never had any irritation with this. It’s a winner for me.

Paula's Choice Resist BHA 9

Paula’s Choice Resist BHA 9

Since the Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer has retinol in it, it’s strictly for night use around here. This was chosen for me because I had said I’m concerned with fine lines and future wrinkles. It’s very lightweight so I thought that it wouldn’t be enough moisturizing for me this winter but I was mistaken. I’m testing other skincare right now but I make sure to use this Barrier Repair Moisturizer a few times a week. The retinol in this works to improve skintone and I’ve been very happy with that overall. The percentage of retinol isn’t mentioned anywhere but it’s a mild one. This is best for normal to dry skin and happily is fragrance free.

Paula's Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream

Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream

Oh what an uproar there was when Paula’s Choice announced they now had an eye cream. It was always her stand that we didn’t need a separate cream for eyes and many of her products are recommended to be used near your eyes. But women (especially me) want an eye cream and Paula listened. Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream was brought out after much testing since she knew she’d be scrutinized by everyone for going against her grain. This is a nicely rich eye cream that hasn’t caused me to have any milia. I used it religiously for 2 months and now alternate it with any others that I’m testing. I love the packaging of it but I often get out more than I actually need. The amount on my finger is really enough for both eyes twice. I try to squeeze lightly so that not too much comes out. I rub it between my fingers to soften it and pat it on under my eyes. While it’s a very good eye cream at a good price, I’m not sure if this is a repurchase, but then again I have a drawer full of eye creams so we’ll see down the road.

There you have my Paula’s Choice regimen. When I’m ready to add new products or I have a question about one of their products I’d have no problem calling again or using their live chat online. I also have no problem telling you that this is a line to be trusted and one I believe in. If I had a daughter, I’d gladly steer her towards Paula’s Choice to find her own routine.

Keeping it clean with Paula’s Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser and Advanced Replenishing Toner

I’m a huge, huge Paula fan from way back…in fact, it’s really thanks to her that I am a beauty blogger today. Her skin care line is one I go back to again and again, so I was more than happy to test some items the BIZ was sent. I think that this line excels in two areas: cleansing and treatment. Today I am excited to be sharing with you two of my favorite cleansing items, the RESIST PERFECTLY BALANCED CLEANSER ($18 for 6.4 oz) and the RESIST ADVANCED REPLENISHING TONER ($23 for 4 oz)

This is a perfect workhorse cleanser. It’s amazing for anyone with oily or t-zone issues – I think she has better cleansers for those with dry skin. This one is terrific for removing excess oil as well as whatever is left from the day while at the same time treating and hydrating skin.

It’s a light lotion cleanser that has a slight foam. Works great with any cleansing device because it has some slip. I do like to wipe off my eye makeup first with Paula’s Gentle Touch Makeup Remover ($15) but this cleanser does take off eye makeup without stinging my eyes. The ceramides and the hyaluronic acid are wonderfully soothing ingredients that leave skin super happy. Great stuff!
I am a big believer in toners. Good ones remove any last vestiges of makeup while also calming skin. This one does both, plus the antioxidants fight wrinkles and free radicals. The bottle is a squeeze bottle that can be a little challenging at first – I was putting way too much toner on my cotton pads – but it can’t be in a spray bottle because the toner has a lotion quality to it that’s too thick to spray. Check out everything it does for skin:
  • Anti-Aging, Extra Sensitive Skin, Wrinkles
  • Soothes Dry/Very Dry Skin
  • Antioxidant-rich formula reduces wrinkles & repairs damaged cells
  • Licorice extract & acetyl glucosamine improve skin tone
  • Soothing formula calms skin while removing last traces of makeup
  • Unique milky texture leaves skin looking radiant & feeling unbelievably soft
  • This product is 100% fragrance- and colorant-free.

I especially appreciate this toner when I have dry spots or chapped areas from the cold Michigan weather. This is, truly, the best toner I have ever used.

I recommend the Paula’s Choice line all the time – it has fabulous basics that work and the Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser and Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner are fantastic staples to include in your skin care routine. If you are new to Paula’s Choice, click HERE for $10 off your first order!  – Lisa

  • Bladderwrack is an antioxidant-rich, mineral-rich seaweed known for its water-binding properties, supporting healthy skin hydration, elasticity and nourishment.
  • Activated Charcoal is a naturally powerful, absorptive ingredient (known for absorbing 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities) that deeply detoxifies and purifies skin.
  • Green Tea is a potent antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, prevent oxidative stress and protect skin from UVA and UVB radiation damage.
  • Aloe Leaf is an herbal remedy renowned for its ability to moisturize, soften, soothe and detoxify skin.

derma e

I love the derma e® line and I’ve used their Soothing Cleanser and Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid for years. Today I am happy to you about two new products that have been added to my list of favorites from derma e® – the Purifying Daily Detox Scrub and the Purifying Oil-Free Moisturizer.

derma e Purifying Daily Detox Scrub

derma e Purifying Daily Detox Scrub

The Purifying Daily Detox Scrub ($15.50) is a facial exfoliant paste that is gentle but very effective. It has a great ingredient list, starting with the charcoal that absorbs impurities so they can be washed away. The scrubbing power comes from Apricot Seed Powder that sloughs off any dead cells, dirt, and oil. The aloe keeps skin super soft and moist.  Like all the Purifying products, it also has the Kimarine® and bladderwrack mentioned earlier.  Because the Purifying Daily Detox Scrub doesn’t have a whole slew of complicated ingredients, this gentle scrub should be safe for even very sensitive skin. I think it’s a fantastic way to keep skin glowing and ready for serum and moisturizer.

derma e Purifying Daily Detox Scrub

derma e Purifying Oil-Free Moisturizer

I was so surprised the first time I used the derma e® Purifying Oil-Free Moisturizer ($29.50) – it’s not often I find a moisturizer that is gray with silver opalescence! I’m not surprised by the performance of this moisturizer, however. It’s the workhorse I thought I would be based on the ingredient list, which includes some terrific antioxidants thanks to the Green Tea. The lightness of the lotion makes it perfect for anyone with oily skin…it might be too light for those with very dry skin. Otherwise, this is a terrific choice for a daily moisturizer that keeps skin healthy and looking fabulous.

derma e Purifying 2-in1 Charcoal Mask and Purifying Toner Mist

derma e Purifying 2-in1 Charcoal Mask and Purifying Toner Mist

My two products are the Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask and Purifying Toner Mist which work beautifully together or alone. I have become a mask junkie so it came as no surprise to Lisa when I told her that this was my first choice to try. I’ve run out of toner so this was a given.

DERMA E® PURIFYING TONER MIST ($15.50) contains Marine Algae and Green Tea to refresh and fortify your skin against the environment. It’s PH balanced with Kimarine® Wakame, Bladderwrack, Green Tea antioxidants, and Aloe Leaf Juice. With these great ingredients you are adding antioxidants that will help support your skin hydration and nourishment.

derma e® Purifying Toner Mist

derma e® Purifying Toner Mist

I use this Toner Mist several times a week, mostly during cleansing at night. The spray itself isn’t that fine, it comes out a little heavy unfortunately. Since I like it after I use the Purifying Charcoal Mask I always apply it after I’ve washed the mask away. I also like it when I’ve chosen to use a wipe or Bioderma instead of washing my face since I know this is going to remove any vestiges of makeup. Instead of spraying it on my face though I’ll mist it onto a cotton pad and use that to do the job.

DERMA E® PURIFYING 2-IN-1 CHARCOAL MASK ($19.50) is terrific for those of you who really don’t like to take the time to mask. This takes such a short time and leaves your skin in great condition. Apply it for 5 minutes, then wet your hands and massage for a minute or so. During the 5 minutes you’ll see it go from dark charcoal to a light ashy color. It hardens but it doesn’t crack. I use a washcloth to remove it and follow with the Purifying Mist Spray.

derma e® Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask

derma e® Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask

This is a dual action mask as the name implies. It detoxifies in two ways to purge pores of deeply rooted toxins while exfoliating away micropollutants for purely glowing skin.  Since I have large pores I find this to be a terrific way to clean them. My nose and cheeks are always a source of concern for me and when I use the Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask I find that they stay clear for several days at a time. It decongests my pores as it dries because of the Kimarine® Wakame, Bladderwrack and Activated Charcoal. Then it exfoliates away dead cells with Apricot Seed Powder. This is a mask that I’m very happy to use.

LATHER teaches a lesson in good salesmanship and products

LATHER Skincare has done something that I wish all skincare companies would follow. Lather has full lines of skincare with wonderful products but one thing they do that makes them stand out from the rest is that they sell skincare kits. These kits are perfect for traveling and for testing out products to see what works best for you.

Lather About Face Combination Skin Kit

Lather About Face Combination Skin Kit

For $29.00 each LATHER sells 3 kits containing 5 products for different skintypes  – oily, combination and dry. I was sent ABOUT FACE COMBINATION SKIN KIT to test and it made me realize that they are on the ball. This kit contains 5 products all packed and ready for travel. Stick this whole set in a ziploc bag and you are ready to face the airport ‘police’. Products range from 0.5 fl oz to 2 fl oz which fit regulations.

Now I don’t happen to travel all that much so this is a great way for me to test out new products to see if my skin likes them.

Lather kit products

Lather kit products

ULTRA MILD FACE WASH 2 oz. is a clear gel-like cleanser with a mild fresh fragrance. It’s foaming but not overly so. My face feels properly cleansed and refreshed with this. The kit size is 2 oz. and full size is 6 oz ($19). Since I wasn’t sure if the fragrance would be overwhelming in this or other products, this is the perfect way for me to try.

CITRUS BALANCING TONER smells delightful. I love the smell of citrus and will always choose it when available. It’s not an overwhelming fragrance but it’s so refreshing. This toner is alcohol free and is made to keep the balance in normal to oily skin. It’s to be used after cleansing to remove any excess dirt or oils plus it helps keep the pH balance of your skin. While it’s not a step that everyone takes, the ingredients in this are ones you want to use. For example linoleic acid and lemon bioflavanoids help keep your skin clean and irritation free. It contains Vitamin E for antioxidant protection. Like all Lather products, it’s paraben free. (2 oz kit size, $16 for 6 fl oz)

ULTRA LIGHT FACE LOTION is a very lightweight moisturizer which works for me in warmer weather since that’s when my skin isn’t quite as dry. It’s a botanical lotion that contains special ingredients like borage oil and grapeseed oil which are great for damaged or problem skin. It absorbs quickly and wears well under foundation. I’ve never had balling up using this. My face feels moisturized without any oily finish. Unfortunately it doesn’t have SPF so I have to recommend using a separate sun protection. There’s a tiny bit of botanical fragrance but really nothing to speak of. (full size $21)

WHITE CLAY DEEP PORE CLEANSING MASK is a bonus to me in this kind of kit. I get to try it and have it around if I’m traveling. I’ve never owned a travel size mask other than packets that I never use up so I have to toss them. White clay is known for its purification and stimulation. It’s a great mask to exfoliate pores (of which I have many). It’s a gentle mask no matter what type of skin you have. Besides the white clay they use bentonite clay to draw out the oils and impurities even more. I love how my skin looks after using the mask since my pores aren’t as noticeable. (0.5 oz in kit, 4.0 oz full size $22)

BAMBOO SILK FOAMING FACE SCRUB WITH LEMONGRASS is a clear gel containing bamboo silk and small jojoba beads that are mild, natural exfoliants. I thought that the fragrance of this would bother me but it’s very mild and has an almost sweet citrus fragrance. The exfoliating powder in this makes it another good cleanser to have in your arsenal. It gently foams and washes away well if I use a wash cloth or bamboo cloth. It is both sulfate and paraben free.

All I need to add is SPF and an eye cream and I’m set to go. After trying these I’d be interested in trying out the About Face Dry Skin Kit next winter. My favorite product in the combination kit is the Citrus Balancing Toner but I also like the Bamboo Silk Foaming Face Scrub and White Clay Pore Cleansing Mask.
