Tarte Cosmetics Fall 2014 collection review and swatches part two

Yesterday, I reviewed the primers and concealers from the exciting new tarte cosmetics Fall 2014 collection.

tarte fall 2014 collage

Today I have the rest of the items tarte sent us.  I love that the packaging features snake skin, because these products are as adaptable as a snake shedding its skin.tarte fall 2014 best in fauxbest in faux lash extending fibers ($19) is very interesting.  The fibers are black, not white, so it almost seems like putting on two different types of mascara.  Start with the tube of lights, camera, lashes mascara to prep lashes for grabbing onto the fibers, follow with the best in faux fiber wand, then finish with another coat of mascara.

Typically I have big problems with fiber lash enhancers – the fibers bother my eyes and make them very uncomfortable.  But this system works fantastically for me – big huge lashes that wear perfect through the day with no fallout!

I am totally digging the limited-edition Amazonian clay dual eyeliner ($24).  Holy smokes this is good stuff.

The dual eyeliner comes in a large glass jar with two shades of gel eyeliner.  I have the brown/black duo.  The brown is not a flat brown, it’s more of a shimmery bronze.  This is a super creamy, easy to apply gel liner that has a little play time before drying down to a smudge-free line that just doesn’t budge.  I love using the black on the top lash line and the brown on the bottom lash line.  This dual liner also comes in a green/black duo and a plum/black duo, and I am most definitely buying both of them.

The colored clay tinted brow gel ($21) was a surprise to me.  I am so used to larger, mascara-sized brushes for brow gels that this tiny little brush took me aback at first.

tarte Fall 2014 Colored Clay Tinted Brow Gel

The tiny little brush packs a big punch.  I absolutely adore what it does for my brows…they look polished and perfect with just one swipe.  This is a seriously great brow gel that fills in brows and keeps them in place all day.  And the tiny brush is a stroke of genius – the larger ones always leave extra gel that I have to wipe off, so my on-the-thin-side brows love this.

I can’t have a complete eye look without curling my lashes – mine are stick straight without the help.  The be charmed limited edition picture perfect eyelash curler ($19) is a great option that isn’t too small for larger eyes.  Plus, this one includes a removable snake charm and a deluxe size lights, camera, flashes mascara.

Lots of eyelash curlers are too small for my eyes, but the be charmed eyelash curler works with room to spare.  It gives major curl that doesn’t droop by the end of the day.  Take the cool snake charm off and put it on your purse or keychain – snakes are a symbol of spiritual guidance and personal growth, so it’s a perfect reminder that you are on the right path!

That’s a lot of items for eyes…for lips, the tarte Fall 2014 collection features a new LipSurgence lip gloss ($19) shade, Envy.

envy is a matte yet shiny mauve berry shade.  It’s a natural shade that gives lips a little ‘oomph’ of color plus a lot of glossy shine.  It keeps my lips looking and feeling moist and lush.  Love it.

Overall, the tarte cosmetics Fall 2014 collection is pretty darn fabulous.  The biggest surprises for me were the dual eyeliner and the colored clay brow gel.  I think my favorite items are the best in faux lash fibers and the be charmed eyelash curler…although there isn’t a clunker in the bunch.  tarte has definitely outdone themselves with this collection.  Thumbs up!  - Lisa

Tarte Cosmetics Fall 2014 Collection review and swatches part one

Sultry, but subtle.  Essentials for day that can take you into night.  Tarte Cosmetics has a beautiful new LE collection for fall, and today I have reviews and swatches of the primers and concealers they sent us.  I previously reviewed the stunning Rainforest After Dark Palette HERE, be sure to check it out.  Tomorrow I will review five more products from the awesome Fall 2014 collection.

First up – primers.

1.  clean slate timeless smoothing primer ($39)  This is part of the new collection, although thankfully it’s a permanent product.  The clean slate timeless smoothing primer is a thick and creamy silicone-based primer that comes in a glass jar.  It leaves skin super smooth, filling in all those wrinkles and smoothing pores for flawless makeup application.  It keeps makeup vibrant and fresh and is an excellent choice for people who like silicone-based primers.

tarte colored clay CC eye primer

2.  colored clay cc eye primer stick ($21)  This is a color correcting eye primer that brightens the eyelid, primes it for eyeshadow application, and keeps eyeshadow from fading and creasing.  I have oily lids and this takes care of that issue stat.  I also like it as a base color all by itself.  My eyelids have an uneven color and some redness, and this primer stick does a great job of evening and creating a neutral base.  Another plus – it doesn’t need sharpening, just twist up from the bottom for more product.

The Fall 2014 collection features one color corrector and one concealer:

1.  colored clay cc undereye corrector ($24) is a CC cream that color corrects and brightens the under eye area.  It comes in two shades:  light-medium and medium-tan.  The shade I have swatched is light-medium.  This creamy color corrector has a tiny bit of shimmer that reflects light and camouflages darkness under the eyes.  It is a color corrector, not a concealer, so using this under concealer really helps to brighten and make eyes look younger.  Definitely PAT this under the eye for the best effect – rubbing or even buffing it with a brush will diminish the effect.  Follow your patting with tarte maracuja creaseless concealer and it takes years off your look.

Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Waterproof Concealer

2.  maracuja creaseless concealer ($22) is one of the best concealers ever.  It is a very thick, creamy concealer that covers like crazy.  You don’t need much, a small amount gives creaseless coverage that lasts all day long.  If you have dark circles, you want this concealer.  It is a must-have.

Stayed tuned for the rest of the collection tomorrow, including the best in faux lash extending fibers, colored clay tinted brow gel, lipsurgence lip gloss in Envy, Amazonian clay dual liner duo gel liner, and the be charmed limited-edition picture perfect eyelash curler.  - Lisa

Tarte Rainforest After Dark review and swatches

Tarte Cosmetics has an exciting new, limited edition palette out called the Rainforest After Dark Eye and Cheek Palette ($38).  This is a wonderful palette with a beautiful range of shades inspired by dusk in the rainforest.  I had high expectations when Tarte sent this to us, and I was not disappointed!

The packaging is gorgeous, with a golden snake design and a purple snake-skin textured box.  Inside, the palette is a round, CD size palette emblazoned with the snake and a purple jeweled eye.  It has a large round mirror that is big enough to reflect your entire face.  Nice!

The products inside include one blush, one highlighter, one bronzer, and six eyeshadows.  The unique thing about Tarte powder products is color-correcting colored clay.  The rose clay helps to soothe skin, vanilla clay controls oil, and gold clay moisturizes.

The Unleashed blush is a pretty plum matte pink.  It has terrific staying power and is such a flattering shade.  Champagne is a gorgeous highlighter, just be sure to buff it well – that’s what turns it into a flattering glow.  I actually use this on my eyes as a brow shade, too.  And Park Avenue Princess is a perfect bronzer, a buttery satin warm gold brown that looks terrific on almost everyone.

The eyeshadows are just to die for.  The texture is buttery soft, the pigmentation is wonderful, and the shades are beautiful. Three are golden browns, and three are pinky purples.

First up, the golden brown shades.  up to no gold is a shimmery gold with a velvet texture.  I think this is my favorite of them all, it really makes my brown eyes POP. tan-gled up in you is a matte tan that goes on so smooth, I almost can’t believe it’s a matte eyeshadow.  don’t turn a-brown is a dark brown with tiny golden shimmer.

Next, the pinky purples.  bare to explore is a matte pink beige that has a silky texture and is a great base shade.  On busy mornings, I throw this on as a wash with some black eyeliner and I am good to go.  make a mauve is a satin plum mauve that is even prettier in person.  plum away with me  is a shimmery dark plum with silver sparkle.  Gorgeous.

Included with the palette is a card with instructions for two different eye looks, the Afterhours Adventure, ‘inspired by the deep orchid hues of dusk, this spellbinding evening look will unleash your inner bombshell as you flawlessly take on the night‘; and Seductive Sunrise, ‘ignite your wild side anytime with this sultry, yet subtle everyday look.

Rainforest After Dark definitely give you everything you need for day or night, subtle or sultry.  Pick it up before it’s sold out!  - Lisa

The best eyeshadow, lip gloss, and nail polish for the Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July!  Here is a holiday cosmetics Rorschach test for you.  What do you see in this photo?

photo from sf.funcheap.com

photo from sf.funcheap.com

Did you say patriotic Elvis?  Or did you say inspiration for your Fourth of July cosmetics???

Since you read this blog, I am guessing the latter.  And I’m with you!  Here are my top red, white, and blue eyeshadows, lippies, and nail polishes.

Red white and blue!

All you need for the Fourth of July!

Let’s start with RED.

left to right:

left to right: Face Stockholm Pearl Eyeshadow 24, tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence lip cream in Promise; Zoya Nail Polish in Lisa

My red choices always tend to be on the ‘berry’ side of the realm.  Face Stockholm has the consummate raspberry red eyeshadow with Pearl Eyeshadow 24 – and yes, it does double duty as a blush.  It even does triple duty as a lip stain when mixed with some clear lip gloss.

Speaking of lippies, my most-loved red for this holiday is tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence Lip Creme in Promise.  This is a chubby lip creme that is self-sharpening and has a slightly minty taste.  It is a primo shiny strawberry red – not too warm or too cool.

My red nail polish choice is – but of course – Zoya in Lisa.  Lisa is the supreme 4th of July red – ruby-red with pink and red shimmer.  It’s fun and festive and not TOO over the top…just like me?  Maybe!

Next is WHITE.  All three of these products should be in every makeup artists bag.  Period.

left to right:

left to right:  Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies; Whitening Lightning Lip Gloss in Phuket; Cult Nail Polish in Tempest

The cream of the crop white eyeshadow is, hands down, Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies ($5.99).  This is a pure white matte shade that should be in everyone’s collection.

If you are looking for a true white lip gloss, Whitening Lightning Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss in Phuket Exotic ($24) is your answer.  This is an opaque white gloss that can be worn alone, or it can be mixed with other colors to create a lighter shade.

My go-to white nail polish is Tempest from Cult Nail Polish ($12).   It’s an absolute pure glossy white, and it looks great on its own or is, of course, perfect for nail art.

Last but not least, BLUE.

left to right;

left to right:  Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri; Whitening Lightning in Bahama; Lacquer Lust in Zircon

I adore blue eyeshadow with brown eyes, and my most cherished blue is Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri ($18). It is the loveliest sapphire blue I have ever seen.

My blue lippie choice is yet another from Whitening Lightning, this one is Bahama Exotic.  Yes, it’s a daring choice, but let me tell you that blue makes your teeth look super white!  If you can pull off blue, this is a lip gloss you need.

I have tons of blue nail polishes (can’t say that about lip products, ha!) so this was a difficult choice…but ultimately Laquer Lust’s Zircon ($12.50) won out.  This teal blue with microshimmer was part of the infamous Birthstone Collection, and lucky us it’s still available thanks to a relaunch!  The color is simply stunning, and the reflection from all those fireworks will only make it even better.

For those who would rather categorize by product type, here is the lowdown.

tarte cosmetics does eyebrows right!

There are many things that tarte cosmetics does well and that list definitely includes brows. They sent their Amazonian clay volumizing brow and hair powder ($25) and frame worker double ended brow powder brush ($21) to test and my eyebrows are very, very happy.

tarte

tarte

The Amazonian clay volumizing brow and hair powder is full of mineral pigment, and it has the Amazonian clay that locks pigment in place and keeps the color vibrant and true. The brow powder comes in four shades: blonde, medium brown, rich brown, and grey. We were sent the blonde and grey to test.

tarte

While the grey obviously isn’t my shade, the blonde is surprisingly perfect for me and I have medium brown hair. A great tip for foolproof brows is to go one or two shades lighter than your normal brow shade. It looks very natural and it brightens the face and makes you look younger.

brows with tarte blonde volumizing hair and brow powder

brows with tarte blonde volumizing hair and brow powder

The brow powder is long wearing and doesn’t fade. It makes brows look full without looking painted or drawn on. The texture isn’t overly powdery; in fact it is quite silky and once applied it looks like natural hair.

This wonderful brow powder does double duty – it also fills in sparse areas on the scalp and covers gray roots. Another plus – these make for beautiful eyeshadows!

A fantastic partner for the Amazonian clay volumizing brow and hair powder is the frame worker double ended brow powder brush ($21). This brush is made from sustainably harvested bamboo and synthetic bristles.

tarte

tarte frame worker double ended brow powder brush

tarte

thin angled end

The thin angled end has just the right amount of firmness for filling in brows. Tap it into the brow powder, then angle it along the natural brow shape and use upward strokes to expertly fill in brows.

tarte

thick angled end

The thicker angled end is fantastic for blending the powder into brows, or for filling in the hairline or thinning spots on the scalp.

I adore both the Amazonian clay volumizing brow and hair powder and the frame worker double ended brow powder brush, and I use them every morning. I give both products my highest recommendation for easy, elegant, and natural looking brows.   – Lisa

Top Ten Tuesday’s lip crayon and lip liner loves

Top 10 Lip Crayons and Lip Liners

Top 10 Lip Crayons and Lip Liners

Top Ten Tuesday has picked my favorite lip products to review this week. I love love love lip crayons. I have oodles of them. I wanted to show a variety of brands and of course once I was all done I thought of a few more. We may just have a part two on Beauty Info Zone. With lip liners, I only have a few brands I like so it was easier to whittle those down to size. The reason I love lip crayons so much is because they are so easy to use. I have several lip crayons in my purse all the time. I can apply them without a mirror if they aren’t too dark. Thank you Top 10 Tuesday for letting me share my favorites!

Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Stick in Berry Pretty* is a cross between a berry and a mauve. I love all of the Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks ($15) but this started as my favorite and 6 months later it remains that way. It’s a “my lips but better” shade once it’s on. Plus it’s not my typical nude lip so I look more alive. It’s got a beautiful glossy finish.

Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Naked is darker than I consider something naked to be. I bought it after reading the description from Sephora “nude pink sheen” but I don’t consider it nude or pink. I still like it, don’t get me wrong, it’s just darker than I expected. This has the most incredible glossy look to it. I love the one step use of a lipstick/gloss like this. I really want to try it in Love Child ($20).

Ardency Inn Americana Natural Lip Color in Bowery is one I featured in the nude lip Makeup Wars. I just couldn’t leave it out since it’s such a great lip crayon. On my lips it’s a nude peach shade but on others it might have a more pink undertone. I was sad when I was at Sephora last since I wanted to test other shades but the line isn’t in my store. This wears a long time since it’s slighty dewy but not really glossy. ($23)

Hourglass Femme Nude Stylo in No3 is another repeat. My lips find the pink in this nude shade. It’s the most matte of all on my Top Ten list. ($30)

Top Ten Lip Crayons: Tarte, Laqa & Co, Pixi, Ilia

Top Ten lip crayons: Tarte, Ilia, Pixi, Laqa & Co

Top Ten lip crayons: Tarte, Ilia, Pixi, Laqa & Co

Tarte Power Pigment in True Love* is one of 8 Power Pigments. I could have used all 8 plus 2 of the older LipSurgences and been done but that’s not fair to my collection. So I chose True Love since it’s a fabulous light rose shade. It’s glossy without having a wet look. Tarte knows lip crayons!! ($24)

Ilia Lipstick Crayon in Call Me is actually lighter on my lips than in my swatch. It was inspired by the cult movie Pretty in Pink and is a youthful shade. Ilia isn’t a brand that’s talked about much but the items I’ve bought from them have been great. Here’s a bit about them: “A prestige line of natural and organic beauty products that combine superior color performance and nourishing organics. All ILIA products are made with up to 85% certified organic ingredients that nourish the skin and help aid in its repair.” ($24)

Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Craving Coral ($14) is one of my best buys. I love this fat crayon because it feels so moisturizing on my lips. It has a slight touch of mint to it so I find it refreshing. While my swatch looks coral I find it to be sheerer and softer on my lips. I definitely want more of these.

LAQA & CO Fat Lip Pencil in Wolfman was in one of my subscription boxes. It’s by far the lightest of the lip crayons I have so it’s good for a quick “almost-no-makeup-day”. I’m not sure how a sweet pink like this got the name Wolfman! ($18)

Top Ten Lip Liners: MUFE and IT

Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencils in 2C and 15C ($19)* are fantastic lipliners in general but even better for summertime. These are waterproof so they are great to use as a lip base for long lasting color. 2C is named Rosewood and it’s described as a rosy nude. 15C is named Pink and is described as a vibrant pink. Both will make your summer lips last but you’ll have trouble picking from the 25 shades.

IT Cosmetics Your Lips But Better Waterproof Lip Liner Stain* in Romantic Rose and Pretty in Pink ($20)are actually moisturizing lip liners. As with all IT Cosmetics they are loaded with anti-aging properties. They have a built in sharpener too. Romantic Rose is a deep rose that’s beautiful on its own although I like it with a lighter lipstick over it. Pretty in Pink is a pretty pink just like the name says. It’s not always easy to find a great pink lip liner but you can count on this one.

Are any of your favorites in my list? I’m always in the market for lip crayons so share your favorites. — Marcia

Makeup Wars loves Nude lippies

Makeup Wars and Top Ten Tuesdays have tempted you with pink lips, peach and coral lips, red lips but never true nudes. Now’s the time though and I was ready for this challenge. Most of my collection is nude lips. It got to the point that I had so many that I had to force myself not to buy new ones unless I was absolutely desperate for them. I was once a MACaholic and I’d buy every rendition of nude they had – and then I’d wear them twice and put them aside. I haven’t chosen any MAC to share with you since I don’t seem to grab for them anymore so instead you’ll see some of my favorites from other brands.

Makeup Wars Nude Lip favorites

Nude lips are interesting because they all have different undertones plus what I consider nude might be too light for you depending on your skintone.

Makeup Wars lip crayons: Ardency Inn, Tarte (x2), Hourglass

Makeup Wars lip crayons: Ardency Inn, Tarte (x2), Hourglass

I’m a big fan of lip crayons but nude ones don’t overpopulate my collection. Ardency Inn Bowery, tarte exposed and Hourglass Nude No 3 are the ones I usually crave.

Hourglass Nude No3 and Ardency Inn Bowery

Hourglass Nude No3 and Ardency Inn Bowery

I bought Hourglass Femme Nude Stylo No3 because everyone was raving about these. Hourglass has an amazing reputation and these Nude lip crayons made beauty lovers so excited. No3 is described as “medium rose nude with hint of pink”. This has a pink undertone but it’s very light once on my lips, not medium to my eyes.

top Hourglass, bottom Ardency Inn

top Hourglass, bottom Ardency Inn

ARDENCY INN AMERICANA Natural Lip Color Pencil in Bowery was my next buy. These are $23 compared to the $30 of Hourglass so that made me happy. ARDENCY INN lip crayons seem to be truer nude shades too. Bowery is a light peach on my lips even though Sephora tells me that it’s a “light nude with pink undertones”. It just isn’t pink on me but it is pretty and I’m very comfortable in it. The consistency is smoother and a little more glossy than Hourglass.

tarte exposed - old vs new versions

tarte exposed – old vs new versions

Tarte Exposed was one of the colors saved when tarte revamped all their lip crayons. Tarte still sells LipSurgence but I didn’t find Exposed. The original fat crayon has a matte finish while the new tarte exposed is a glossier finish. The new pencils are called Power Pigments and Exposed is described as “nude with pink undertones”.

tarte exposed original version and new Power Pigment

tarte exposed original version and new Power Pigment

Power Pigment in exposed is glossier and slightly more pink while the original is definitely a matte on me and a little darker. Can’t go wrong with either but there is a slight difference between the two.

6 lipsticks made the cut for Makeup Wars: Tom Ford Pink Dune, Lunasol 25, Armani Shine 17, Gosh Darling, Armani 103, Shiseido RS701

GOSH Darling

GOSH Darling

GOSH Darling was a lipstick that everyone had to have. It was so hot on boards like Makeup Alley that you felt like you didn’t belong there if you didn’t own it.

Gosh Darling

Gosh Darling

I finally got it and was shocked at how much it looks like concealer. It’s so light and so beige that I couldn’t get it to show in a single swatch photo. I couldn’t resist putting this in even though it’s not a favorite, I’m including it for shock value.

Armani Shine 17, Lunasol 25, Armani 103

Armani Shine 17, Lunasol 25, Armani 103

These are the lipsticks that I reach for when I want moisturized lips with beautiful nude shades. Armani in particular makes outstanding nude colors for lips and I think they are among the finest lipsticks available. I get a little overwhelmed at an Armani counter because I want too much. All of these lipsticks were bought long ago.

Rouge d’Armani in 103 is my newest Armani and still available. 103 is the pink nude that I love to wear. It looks beige in the tube but once on it picks up pink.

Rouge d'Armani 103 (nordstrom.com)

Rouge d’Armani 103 (nordstrom.com)

Armani Shine 17 is an oldie but goodie. It’s more sheer than 103 but just as glossy.

LUNASOL 25 is also an older lipstick and I doubt it’s still for sale. Lunasol lipsticks were introduced to me by an old friend. I’d go nuts cosmetic shopping in Japan or Singapore! I have 2 LUNASOL lipsticks and they are so wonderfully creamy. They have a very similar consistency and look to the Armani ones I love.

Tom Ford Pink Dune, Shiseido RS701

Tom Ford Pink Dune, Shiseido RS701

Tom Ford Pink Dune barely has any color on my lips but that doesn’t stop me from loving it. It was a limited edition shade that I bought in the early winter but didn’t really wear at first. It felt too nude for winter but I can wear it now. Sometimes I’ll put it over another lipstick to ‘nude’ it up a bit.

Tom Ford Pink Dune, Shiseido RS701

Tom Ford Pink Dune, Shiseido RS701

I had to include Shiseido RS701 even though it’s not available. This was my first Shiseido lipstick and it reminds me of shopping with my blog partner Lisa. It’s one of my favorite lipstick buys. It’s a pink nude (RS stands for Rose) that has the perfect depth for me.
