Spring blush the Makeup Wars way

Spring blush favorites

Spring blush favorites

Makeup Wars is back to redden your cheeks, bring a flush to your face and enchant you with beautiful blush. We’ve picked some of our favorites that are gracing our cheeks this spring and into the summer. I’ve chosen 9 but I could have chosen 90 most likely.

If you are a Beauty Info Zone reader then you know that I love cream blush. I’m much more likely to buy a cream blush than a powder one so I’m starting with my springiest creams.

1. Tarte cheek stains come in 8 shades and you’ll have a tough time picking out a favorite. I chose Fearless since that’s the one I’ve been using the most lately. It’s a pinky coral and seems to look great with almost every eye look I choose.

2. Maybelline Master Glaze Cream Blush Stick in Pink Fever is my version of Radiant Orchid in a blush. It’s one of the best buys of the year for me since I love the longevity of the product, the perky color and the price. I need to pick up more of these.

3. Face Stockholm Creme Blush in London is getting a lot of love these days. I took a new picture for this review but I’ve used it so much that it looked raggedy. It’s a papaya shade that looks super bright in pictures and swatches but not on my face. I use a light touch when applying this long lasting color.

4. Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Poppy Paradise is a blush that just doesn’t want to swatch for me. It’s described as ‘warm toned hot pink’ which is a great, if confusing, description. It feels cooling when you apply it. The Cheek Gelee can be used alone or as a stain to wear under a powder if you find blush fades on you. I just might have purchased Pink Escape during the Sephora 15% off sale.

5. Make Up For Ever HD Second Skin Cream Blush in 210 but I easily could have picked 225 and 330 since the 3 I have are scrumptious. I love the colors of these. They are so smooth and as Lisa said “DREAMY”. We’ve reviewed 6 of these and can’t praise them enough. Find a color (or 5) that you love and you’ll never be sorry.

I’m no slacker when it comes to powder blush and have a small mountain of those too. The 4 I’ve chosen are the ones I’m finding most versatile for spring.

6. TheBalm InStain in Argyle is my latest buy. I purchased it from Hautelook and will purchase more the next time they are on sale. I love the color of Argyle (petal pink) and I love not only how smoothly it applies but it has amazing longevity. It does have stain-like qualities. The pigmentation is intense even though Argyle is the lightest shade available.

7. Tarina Tarantino Dollskin Cheek in Parasol is absolutely beautious. I constantly express my love for the Dollskin Cream blushes so I was excited to receive this powder blush. It’s as amazing as the cream blushes. Parasol is so soft and cream like. It has a gorgeous glow to it. Tarina Tarantino describes it as shimmering bright pink coral. I describe it as beautiful.

8. Senna Sheer Face Color in Pink Diva is the sweetest pink of the group. When I want a pink that’s pink this is what I pick. While the name says sheer, the blush isn’t sheer. It’s loaded with cool tones of pinkness.

Senna Pink Diva

9. Eddie Funkhouser Ultra Intensity Cheek Color in A Little Toasted doesn’t appear to be a blush you’d choose for spring but it’s great for that very reason. I sometimes need a very neutral shade and this is a neutral. There’s a brownish mauve tinge to it that was hard to capture but it’s there. It’s almost like a contour color for my fair skin.

Tarte part two – learn more about the new Cheek Stains and Power Pigment Lip

tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigment Lips

tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigment Lips

We are so excited to be able to share these new tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigment LipSurgences with you. When tarte sent these along both Lisa and I were thrilled with the beautiful colors. Yesterday Lisa shared her 4 choices and today I’m going to regale you with the reminder. I’m not quite sure how you as a consumer will pick from these fabulous shades.

tarte Cheek Stains

tarte Cheek Stains

tarte Power Pigments

tarte Power Pigments

Let’s talk about Cheek Stains first. The very first product that Maureen Kelly, founder of Tarte, created was a Cheek Stain which is now called Flush. Her brand took off from there. Fifteen years later tarte decided to repackage these so that each shade is special on its own.  7 of these 8 Cheek Stains are from the previous line but one new one, Blushing Bride, has been added to celebrate their being around for 15 years!

Almost all of the cheek stains are a gel formula. Just one is a cream formula, Natural Beauty. The way to tell is to look at the tops of brand new Cheek Stains, a rounded top tells you it’s a gel, a flat top tells you it’s a cream.

In addition to the Cheek Stains there is a matching powder blush and a matching Power Pigment LipSurgence. Tarte has tied in all these together to let you have your choice of the type of blush you prefer and a lip crayon that works perfectly with each one.

Tarte Cheek Stains: Blushing Bride, Exposed, Tipsy, Fearless

Tarte Cheek Stains: Blushing Bride, Exposed, Tipsy, Fearless

Blushing Bride is the newest Cheek Stain so if you already have a collection of these then this is the one for you to add. According to Tarte the shade is a rosy pink, according to Sephora it’s a plummy rose. Whichever description fits is just fine because it’s a beautiful rose that is I find to be more pink than plum. It’s creamy and it blends beautifully. By nature the Cheek Stains are a little tacky but less so than they used to be. Give it time and it dries down to the shade you’d love on your cheeks if you were a bride.

Exposed is the hardest one to capture in photographs. In real life it looks like there’s a lot of brown to it but it’s actually a nude pink that is the most natural looking (in my opinion) of all the shades. This came out originally under the name Awakening. Exposed Power Pigment for lips is the kind of color I wear all the time so this one is going to be finished the quickest.

Tarte Exposed

Tipsy is the perfect spring coral. It’s sheer so it’s not overwhelming. It’s a little darker than my other shades. The Power Pigment has been begging me for warmer weather.

Fearless is my favorite although it’s really hard to pick a favorite. But it just calls to me in its pink coral gloriness. I think it’s because it’s the easiest to wear with any eye that I’m wearing. The Power Pigment Lip brightens my lips without making me feel like my lips are screaming “this is dark”.

I know I’ve been going on forever but I n.e.e.d. to talk about the new lip crayons. Tarte still has most of their LipSurgence crayons. They make 7 that are LipSurgence Lip Tints and are a hybrid between a stain, a balm and a gloss. They have 6 shades of the LipSurgence Matte Lip Tints which are very hydrating but have a matte finish. In addition there are 2 that are called LipSurgence Hydrating Lip Creme. So they haven’t abandoned one of my all time favorite lip product, they’ve just added to them with 8 gorgeous shades.

I’m thrilled to have these in my LipSurgence collection. They still have that minty freshness and are automatic making sharpening unnecessary.

Now for the moment of truth, which of these will you be choosing to complete your makeup collection? Will it be the slightly darker shades from Part 1 or will you go with the lighter shades in Part 2? We’ll respect your choices since we had a hard time deciding ourselves. — Marcia

New tarte Cheek Stains and Power Pigments, part one

tarte Cheek Stains

tarte Cheek Stains

The iconic Cheek Stains are the gel/cream blushes that first fostered tarte cosmetics amazing reputation for cutting edge, quality products. Not only does tarte have 8 new Cheek Stain ($30) shades, they also have matching Power Pigments ($24), pencil lip tints with tons of color and lots of shine. Today, I have reviews and swatches of four shades:  Blissful, Flush, Natural Beauty, and True Love. Tomorrow Marcia will have her review and swatches of the other four: Tipsy, Exposed, Fearless, and Blushing Bride.

Tarte’s Cheek Stains are gel (with one exception that’s cream) blushes that give a ‘glow from within’ look. They come in a push-up container and are usually applied straight onto the cheeks. They go on a little wet, with quite a bit of play time to blend perfectly before drying down to a lasting, natural looking flush. Not only do they look beautiful, they are also great for the skin. They have five superfruits that are full of antioxidants to fight free radicals, including maracuja, goji, açaí, acerola, and pomegranate. These superfruits have tons of Vitamin C that brightens skin and moisturizes dry areas.

tarte Power Pigments

tarte Power Pigments

tarte Power Pigments

tarte Power Pigments

The matching Power Pigments are extremely moisturizing and they quench dry lips while also healing them with antioxidants. In addition the color is fabulous thanks to that powerful pigment and the thinner pencil allows for a more precise application than is normally found with lip crayons. Ingredients include Vitamin E for antioxidant power; shea butter for emollience, and canauba wax for a super smooth application.

The matching Power Pigments

I tend to be drawn toward darker shades while Marcia prefers lighter ones, so today is all about berries and reds (well, one peach shade snuck in there!!)

Blissful

Blissful Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

Blissful swatches

Blissful swatches

Blissful is the lovely warm peach shade that snuck its way into the shades I chose to review. This is the lightest of my four today and it is a very soft, pretty peach that doesn’t lean too brown. The cheek stain is better suited to lighter skin tones, but the lippie will work for anyone who wants a warm peach without a ton of drama.

Flushed

Flush Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

Flushed swatches

Flush swatches

Flush is a sheer berry shade. This is the shade that first drew me to the tarte line so many years ago! I find this shade is very natural. It looks like you just came in from a chilly day or a quick run. I love it.

Natural

Natural Beauty Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

Natural swatches

Natural Beauty swatches

Natural Beauty is a sheer rosy red shade. This is the only cream cheek stain in the bunch, which is why it has a difference appearance – the others have a rounded top, while this one is decidedly flat. The texture is different as well. It doesn’t go on as wet and the coverage is much less sheer for the cheek stain. The Power Pigment has the same texture, shine, and staying power as the other lippies. I think this fresh, healthy-looking shade is my most favorite of them all.

tarte True Love

True Love Power Pigment and Cheek Stain

True Love swatches

True Love swatches

True Love is a sheer watermelon shade. While the Cheek Stain looks incredibly dark, it goes on quite sheer and natural looking. The Power Pigment is certainly a deeper shade and they complement one another beautifully.

These four new tarte shades are all winners in my book and they all get tons of play from me. I love the matching cheek and lip colors – all of the lip shades are deeper versions of the cheek shades, making simply perfect mates for one another. If you prefer lighter shades, be sure to stay tuned for Marcia’s review tomorrow!  - Lisa

Mine is in shade light. This is a color-correcting stick that neutralizes imperfections, brightens the complexion, and primes skin for foundation. Just smooth it on and then tap it in with fingers. The CC primer melts right in and creates a perfect canvas for foundation application.

Once you have primed with the CC primer, next up is the colored clay liquid foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 (a World-wide Launch, by the way!) using the bamboo liquid foundation brush.

Makeup Wars shares holiday eye looks

makeup-wars.jpg~originalThe parties continue for Christmas, year end and New Year’s Eve so Makeup Wars has decided to show you some holiday eye looks.

One of my very favorite holiday palettes this year is the Tarte Gorgeous Getaways Set*.The colors in it are perfect for day and can be jazzed up for night. My holidays are pretty low key so the beautiful shimmers probably won’t be worn but this is what I wore for my first holiday eye this year and will surely wear again.

eye wearing the top left palette in Tarte Gorgeous Getaways

eye wearing the top left palette in Tarte Gorgeous Getaways

I used the top right palette that contains Santorini Bikini: peach satin.  Great Sphynx: milk chocolate with light shimmer.  Belgian Chocolate: this is a darker chocolate with a purple undertone.  Pacific Sunset: a coppery gold with some shimmer.  Spontaneous blush: a pinky peach satin.

I like dramatic eyes so I apply these heavily to get the most pigmentation out of the shades as possible. To do this eye I started with Pacific Sunset (coppery gold) applied lightly on the lid. On the inner and into the crease I used Santorini Bikini (peach). On the outer crease I started with Great Sphynx (milk chocolate) but then blended Belgian Chocolate into that so that it would be more dramatic. On my browbone I used Serengeti Sand which is a light beige in another one of the individual palettes in the set. I also wore the Spontaneous Blush from this set. I felt comfortable yet special in it.

This set was an exclusive at Ulta; it’s my favorite kit out of all the ones I’ve tried from Tarte. If you have a local Ulta you should see if they have this still in stock since you’ll get a winter’s worth of wear out of this (and more).

Here are some other choices I’d pick for New Year’s Eve.

1) Urban Decay Smoked Eyeshadow Palette – I bought this last year at Sephora and it’s my go to when I want a smokey eye. The variety of shades in this palette are perfect for night. Even though I have Mushroom in other palettes, it’s such a great basic color. (picture from beauty.com)

Urban Decay Smoked

2) Marc Jacobs Beauty in The Starlet is probably the palette I’ve been most excited about this year. This is a simple eye with it but it’s so easy to combine the colors in this palette to make some standout shades.

3. Tarina Tarantino Eye Dream Hyperliners* are perfect holiday eyeliners if you like a touch of glitter or metallics. I have two of them and they wear beautifully. They give your eye just enough sparkle to light them up. They are also waterproof so they’ll last through the night.  Spark of Envy is a metallic peacock-green while Locket Book is a medium brown infused with gold glitter.

The definition of beautiful?? Tarte Gorgeous Getaways set

tarte gorgeous getaways from ulta.com

tarte gorgeous getaways from ulta.com

As you know I’ve reviewed a lot of tarte cosmetics over the years but nothing has ever come close to the holiday Gorgeous Getaways set that I’m showing you today. I haven’t used anything other than this box of wonder since I received it for review. Sometimes when I’ve gotten a holiday set I’ve liked the eyeshadows but they weren’t quite the same caliber as the regular line. That’s not the case with tarte Gorgeous Getaways. These eyeshadows are absolutely amazing. Fabulous pigmentation, a variety of finishes and colors, terrific lasting power. It has it all.

tarte gorgeous getaways box

This is an Ulta exclusive that costs $48 and is worth so much more than that. This two tiered set has everything you need at home or for travel. In the top tier you’ll receive 4 separate palettes that each contain four complimentary eyeshadows and a blush. In the bottom tier you’ll find an empty gold palette case so you can transfer one of your favorites into it for your purse or travel. As if that’s not enough, there are 3 beautiful lip glosses that work perfectly with the colors in the top tier.

Serengeti Sand: a light beige that is a great neutral.   Buckingham Palace: satin finish brown with black undertones.  Bordeaux: dark purple shimmer with black undertones.   Rocky Mountain: a slate brown matte.  Ambitious blush: a mauved pink

Every one of these colors are terrific. My picture doesn’t show you the richness of Bordeaux which is a shame!

The individual palette that comes with this set is magnetized as are the bottoms of the palettes. You can use this to take one with you since the entire box is too heavy to travel with if you were flying.

Three gorgeous new shades of Maracuja gloss are included and they are beautifully matched with the shades of blush and shadows.

NY Minute has a definite lavender undertone to its pinkness.  When in Rome is a pinky coral. Czech Me Out is more of a mauve shade.

If I haven’t convinced you then check the photos at Vampy Varnish or Makeup and Beauty Blog and then get to an Ulta or ulta.com quickly!! This gets my vote for the best holiday 2013 cosmetic set and that’s saying a lot since I bought quite a few this year!! What tarte have you caved and bought? — Marcia
