Self tanners have come a long way, baby. Years ago they were difficult to apply, smelled horrific, and turned you an unnatural looking orange. There are some truly great options out there today, options so great no one should be afraid to faux tan! I put my self tanners into two categories: one night stands (these only last until you wash them off) and marriage material (these give you more committment – at least one week). Here are my top ten self tanners. The first five are my favorite one night stands and the next five are my favorite marriages.
Four fantastic color options, this one night stand is also the perfect remedy for any bad ‘marriages’.
Oh my this is a terrific one night stand…it makes any skin flaws disappear with beautiful tint and soft shimmer.
The best liquid bronzer for the face and decolletage, hands down.
A beautiful golden tan that is waterproof (hello swimming!) but not soap proof (hello one night stand!).
There’s a reason this is a favorite of Hollywood starlets – it’s gorgeous, easy to use, and I love the beautiful golden shimmer.
I love this especially as a face tanner. The color adjusts to your skin so it’s extremely natural looking.
This sunscreen is also a gradual self tanner, which is a great way to build up to that commitment.
8. Tan Towels
See the tan lines? Tan Towels are a super convenient way to make them a thing of the past – even if you have the tan lines of a blogger.
I buy this self tanner over and over because it gives gorgeous color and I can get it in any scent I want. My most frequent pick is Day at the Beach, which is a “Coconut infused scent potion that will take you back to lazy days spent at the beach.”
This is a marriage, all right – it takes some time but it applies beautifully, gives deep dark color, and is total marriage material.
Happy faux tanning! – Lisa
I divided up my sunscreen loves into two categories: face and body. I prefer to use SPF that’s formulated specifically for the face and has a moisturizing effect at the same time. My three favorites are: Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum with SPF 30
And my newest: B.Kamins Sun Defense SPF 30 Lotion. Since I’ve previously reviewed and loved the first two for their lightweight coverage I’ll tell you more about the B.Kamins and why I like it so much. (This was sent for review.)
B.Kamins Sun Defense is both fragrance free and oil free which is what I look for in a facial formula. Of course it can be used anywhere on your body too but I save the precious stuff for my face. This provides both UVA and UVB protection and is especially good for sensitive skin. It has both physical and light absorbing sunblocks. Did you know that if you take certain medications that it makes your skin more photosensitive? That’s a big reason to use this sunscreen. I’ve always burned very easily and never before realized that medications could have had a part in this.
This has a very creamy formula and comes out as a peachy pink color. I like that I can see if I missed any spots. It takes about 2 – 3 minutes to absorb but from that point on I can put on any type of foundation over it. I find I don’t need any kind of serum since this does everything in one – it primes, it moisturizes and it protects. I love that there’s never a scent even if I get overheated later in the day. I haven’t had any reactions to Sun Defense. It’s a great formula that I’m happy to recommend.
For my body I’ve started using the Neutrogena line. I was sent 2 Neutrogena sunscreens to test and now I find I have to share them with my husband. Darn it. My husband has had several basal cell carcinomas removed and his dermatologist insisted that he not only wear a hat but that he use sunscreen. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch was on the list he received from the derm of products to use. We both use this since I slather my neck and arms with it when I’m getting dressed in the morning and he uses it for his face, arm and chest area. What’s great about Dry Touch is that it’s Broad Spectrum with SPF45. Plus Neutrogena uses Helioplex Technology that makes its sunscreens photostable. Neutrogena makes the Ultra Sheer Dry Touch in different SPF strengths including SPF 45, 55, 75, 85 and 100. I recently saw a package of this at Costco with 2 regular size and 2 purse size which I’ll soon be buying.
The other Neutrogena sunscreen that I’m using is the Ultra Sheer Body Mist. This is also a Broad Spectrum sunscreen. I have the SPF 100 and it also comes in SPF 30, 45 and 70. What I love about the Body Mist is how easy it is to use. I’m at the mercy of a two year old who believes he should be outside all the time. I keep my Ultra Sheer Body Mist by the door along with a Twistband for my hair. I can spray it on the back of my neck quickly this way so I can play outside with him. It’s got a light fresh mist that doesn’t stain my clothes or get my hair wet. I can also give him a quick spray without him objecting although I’m going to pick up Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids since the small pool is about to come out.
So there you have my review and long winded explanation of my favorite sunscreens. I can’t wait to read what the other Makeup Wars bloggers have to share. I’ll be outside more this summer than any other so this is vital information for me. Please click on the logos to read more. Do you have a favorite? I’d love to know. — Marcia
The days are getting longer and the sun is shining brighter, so Supergoop is on our minds – as well as on our skin! Everyone needs to wear sunscreen, and thankfully it’s no longer like the old days when SPF products were smelly and left a nasty white cast to the skin. Now there are wonderful, thoughtful options available for getting your SPF and getting beautiful at the same time. Today Lisa and Marcia tell you all about their picks from Supergoop, a fabulous line with a funny name.
Here’s a riddle for you: How does someone get a great tan AND avoid the harmful rays of the sun at the same time? Answer: Supergoop Self-Tanning Sunscreen Mousse ($38)!
The Self- Tanning Sunscreen Mousse has an SPF of 20. Not only does it provide sun protection, it also gives you a gradual faux-tan. Normally I apply self tanner and then put sunscreen over it, so this combo products saves a step (and some money!).
It has my favorite fantastic hygenic top. The product is protected from light, and it squeezes out so that no dirt or bacteria will contaminate the rest of the lotion. Love it!!
Not only do you get sun protection and a faux tan at the same time, you get a beautiful daily moisturizer. This sophisticated moisturizer has Parsol, SP3 Complex, and Vitamin E to battle free radicals. As a self tanner, the color develops gradually, so if you use it as your daily sunscreen you will always have a natural, healthy looking glow. This isn’t for getting a really deep tanned look. And as sun protection, it has broad spectrum UV protection with high water resistance.
The mousse is actually a light lotion that melts right into skin. It smells like cucumbers, although the scent isn’t overpowering and it fades quickly. You just can’t beat two products in one – less time is spent applying lotions, less money is spent on products, and one application provides twice the benefit!!
Lisa is always talking about Supergoop! It can be embarrassing when you are out for lunch and someone talks “supergoop”. But once I got my hands on Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum I realized what was getting her so excited.
In some ways Lisa and I are like two peas in a pod but when it comes to skintone that’s where we differ. I’m like Snow White and she’s like the dwarves. She loves to be outside and loves that sunkisssed look. I believe in the power of air conditioning and my very fair skin (and obviously fairy tales). Therefore I need a great sunscreen that’s not going to leave a funny cast on my skin; one that doesn’t have a fragrance; and one that doesn’t interfere with my foundation. Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum to the rescue just like the handsome prince.
I too love the hygenic packaging. The pump is easy to use and I don’t end up wasting the sunscreen since I can control the amount that comes out. This is the perfect sunscreen for my face. It’s not too thick yet it provides SPF 30+ protection that also moisturizes. It was created for normal to dry skin to help protect against the premature signs of aging.
The texture of this is so light. It’s between a serum and a cream. It’s not loose like a serum but it’s not heavy like a cream. It blends in quickly so that you can finish putting on any other makeup over it.
Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum comes in two sizes – $42 for the full size or $20 for a 20 ml travel size that’s perfect to keep with you. Snow White and Marcia approve of this sunscreen and we believe you will too.
Supergoop is available on their website as well as Sephora, Nordstrom, Dermstore and a slew of other shops that know quality when they come across it.
I love the sun, but I don’t like wrinkles. Or freckles. Or hyperpigmentation. Or worse. But…I also don’t like stinky, thick, difficult-to-absorb SPF. So what’s a girl to do?
The answer: check out Supergoop! I remember the first time I saw this line at Sephora, I was intrigued – what an unusual name. What in world would make me want to buy goop, even if it’s super? Well, when the goop is SPF, you definitely want something super…and this line delivers.
I don’t care what part of the world you live in, or what season it is – you need SPF. However, no one needs an extra skin care step in the morning. Save Face A.M. Moisturizer with Advanced UV Protection SPF 35+ ($28) is a multi-tasking product, providing excellent sun protection within a morning moisturizer.
I love the extremely sanitary top that dispenses a small amount of product – I find that I need about three pumps for my face and neck. It’s a large bottle that lasts forever. The lotion is medium weight, not sticky, and I can’t believe it but it soaks in quickly without leaving that awful white cast on the skin.
There are three main ingredients in this wonderful workhorse of a moisturizer: Parsol, which provides long wavelength UVA rays; Blueberry Extract, which is an antioxident that improves the skin’s texture, elasticity, and smoothness; and Vitamin E which protects the skin from free radicals.
This moisturizer/SPF 35+ doesn’t smell and does a fantastic job of moisturizing the skin. I truly love it.
There are a few other items that I highly recommend from Supergoop. If you have dry, chapped lips, you for sure need to check out the Mint Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30 ($8.50).
Oh my, this stuff is…well…super! It’s a fantastic gel-type lip balm that really protects the delicate lip area from the sun. Protection from UVA and UVB comes from Parsol 1789 and Parsol SLX. Octinoxate UV also protects the lips from short wavelength UVB rays, and lips are kept super soft and healthy with Shea Butter and Vitamins E and C.
I love the applicator for this lip balm, it makes applying very easy and convenient.
Here’s a swatch of the lip balm. Looks sort of like thin Vaseline, doesn’t it? It’s not icky-sticky like vaseline, though, it feels very soft and smooth on with no stickiness at all. The mint gives your lips a slightly cool sensation at first application, which does fade away quickly. The lip balm truly softens and protects, and it lasts quite a while for a lip balm.
And I always have a few Supergoop Sunscreen Swipes (box of 21 Swipes is $34) in my purse. You never know when you might need a little extra sun protection, and if you have kids you will for sure find these indispensible. They are paraben-free, sweat and water-resistant, and provide SPF 30+ protection. In addition to the box of Swipes, the single packets are available in several different kits that are listed on the website.
Supergoop is super easy to find, it’s in larger stores like Sephora, Nordstrom, and Barneys, and you can also peruse the line and shop on the Supergoop website. Don’t forget your sun protection, even if it’s the middle of winter where you live. Supergoop makes being safe a beautiful thing. – Lisa
