Top Ten Sunscreens for 2015 – eyes, lips, body and face

Welcome to the 2015 version of favorite sunscreens. I’ve done both a Makeup Wars in 2013 on favorites and a Top Ten Tuesday in 2014. You’ll see some products that remain the same and some new ones. We can’t forget any part of our body and I didn’t want to forget children since I go through more sunscreen for them than I do for myself. — Marcia
1435625486_1115290AVEENO® Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50  A lot of Aveeno products have fragrance so when I am sent one that is fragrance free I’m over the moon. I find myself using this for my body all the time. It’s $10.99 but I often find coupons or specials for it. This has become a staple for both my husband and myself.
1435625420_serum_510x600SUPERGOOP CITY SERUM is the one I want for my face. I buy this every summer. This is fragrance free and gentle on my skin. It wears really well under foundation and provides anti-aging benefits and SPF 30.
1435625218_eyecream_510x600SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* is another product that was on last year’s list. This SPF 37 sunscreen is a great undereye protectant. The applicator makes it easy to apply and is cooling at the same time. Supergoop is really a top notch brand.
1435625098_murad-invisiblur-300x259MURAD INVISIBLUR PERFECTING SHIELD* isn’t a sunscreen per se but with SPF 30 it’s great under foundation. It gives a totally clear sunscreen protection while also blurring imperfections. There are many days I use this and not an additional SPF protect.
1435625029_algenist-tmALGENIST REPAIRING TINT RADIANCE MOISTURIZER with SPF 30* is one of the foundations that I’ve been using a lot lately. Recently a friend blogged about it and how it totally changed her skin so out it came again. I’d forgotten just how wonderful it was. It comes in 4 shades and I wear it in Light. I love getting amazing skincare benefits along with hiding my redness and sunspots.
1435624971_6062_lg_1LATHER BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 15 LIP BALM is what I discovered after I started using the Lather Tinted Lip Balms. I like the spearmint the best but it’s great to try the 3 pack with citrus, spearmint and unscented since I need lip balm in every purse or pocket.
1435624891_balmfamily_510x6001SUPERGOOP FUSION LIP BALM SPF 30 is the one I like when I’m at the pool or splashpad with my babies. Even though I try not to be in direct sunlight, they love it. This squeeze tube comes in 2 flavors (mint and acai) with mint being my fave.
1435624812_1115092 AVEENO® Baby Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50* is one of my main sunscreen for the kids. My granddaughter is 20 months old and she adores running around after her brother outside. I need sunscreen for them and this Aveeno is a pleasure to use. She doesn’t squirm when I apply it on her and it spreads easily. Bright sun or overcast days still need sunscreen and this is a great reasonably priced alternative.
1435624755_broad_spectrum_spf50_mineral_sunscreen_2015MUSTELA BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SPF 50 SUNSCREEN* is new to me and from the minute it arrived I knew it was perfect for my two little loves. This has both UVA and UVB protection in a mineral base and no fragrance.
1435624704_broad_spectrum_spf50_sun_stick.jpg.pagespeed.ce.dats3hfv_sMUSTELA BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SUNSCREEN STICK with SPF 50* is the one I let my grandson use. He loves rubbing the stick on himself and I finally have a way of applying sunscreen on him without a big struggle. Of course I sneak the Mustela lotion on the parts of his body he can’t reach. This is a win-win situation.

Top Ten Winter Helpers

1419727169_waxelene_lip_balm_tube_0WAXELENE Lip Balm, the Petroleum Jelly Alternative – I not only have a review of this scheduled for later today (12/30/14) but I also have a giveaway for this. I have a ton of lip balms that I can recommend to you but Waxelene is different since it’s soothing and healing plus it has so many uses. It’s more than a lip balm, it’s for dry skin, diapers, chapped lips, makeup removal etc. It comes in many sizes including this lip tube. A winner at only $3.99.*
1419727088_lip-rx-kit-800x800GABRIEL RX LIP KIT containing a lip balm and a lip scrub – a review is coming up for this kit soon. It contains a lip scrub to help banish the flakies and make your lips soft and smooth to prepare for lipsticks. It also contains a great lip balm that is great under lipstick.*
1419727038_31axlo1yjel._sy300_MIRACLE OF ALOE, MIRACLE FOOT REPAIR – I have a lot of foot creams that I use for softer feet but this is my miracle foot cream. My feet were such a wreck after the harsh water of the hospital and a month without showering that I thought I’d never get them back to normal. I slathered this on twice a day and my feet are so smooth now that it’s hard to believe. I’ve bought it several times and it’s something that’s shared by my family.
1419726913_1195078AVEENO SKIN RELIEF MOISTURE REPAIR – This is a winter savior and it’s fragrance free!! It’s for the dryest of skin which is what happens to mine in the winter. Last winter’s Polar Vortex made me rush out to purchase this.
1419726840_rocgoldday30_fulRoC RETINOL CORREXION DEEP WRINKLE DAILY MOISTURIZIER WITH SPF 30 – A long name for an excellent product. It’s not a heavy moisturizer so your skin can breathe easily. The SPF30 is great because it’s broad spectrum.*
1419726783_fvlbodybutterLAVANILA BODY BUTTER in Fresh Vanilla Lemon – La Vanila makes this in several fragrances so you can pick the one you like best. It contains 100% pure shea & cocoa butters so it’s a great winter protectant. You’ll smell good and you’ll feel soft. Full review (and a giveaway) will be coming up.*
1419726698_lemon_hc_largeBE DELECTABLE HAND CREAM in Lemon + Cream – I love the be Delectable line and can recommend all their products. I chose the Hand Cream today because while I need a hand cream all year, I’m desperate for it in winter. It contains mango butter, shea butter and aloe vera to nourish your hands and cuticles. The smell of the lemon is divine.*
1419726602_large_dnabarrierNEOVA DNA BARRIER – This is one of my favorite moisturizers for night. I love how this feels on my skin and how my skin looks when I wake up the next morning. It’s rich but doesn’t clog pores, it has no fragrance, it’s soothing and it’s wonderful. I just finished one and I’m ordering another for sure. *
1419726516_serum_510x600SUPERGOOP ANTI-AGING CITY SUNSCREEN SERUM – This turned into my favorite sunscreen. If the product that I’m using for daytime moisturizing doesn’t have sunscreen then it’s Supergoop to the rescue. No fragrance which is important to me. Gentle and non-greasy. It works great with or without makeup. I wrote about it in July and I am writing about it again at the end of December so it’s a love all year round.*
1419726422_aaa_oil_30ALGENIST ADVANCED ANTI-AGING REPAIRING OIL – I’ve grown to love oil on my face but they aren’t all created equal. This past summer I was testing one by Yes to Blueberries and while the price was right, I finally gave up on it since it was too heavy. An oil needs to be gently absorbed and not sit on top of your skin. Algenist does just that. You can use a few drops or mix it with a serum. Either way it’s protecting my skin this winter and helping with the dehydration that I see.
There are a lot more products that I could have included in this Top Ten list but these are the ones in my current rotation. They are all products I’m thrilled to count as winter saviors. — Marcia

Top 10 Tuesday Sun Protection Favorites

TOP TEN TUESDAY picked an important topic this week – sunscreen. I can’t believe the number of years I didn’t use sunscreen or used it sporadically. I’m paying the consequences now with too many sunspots. As an oldie, but goodie, sunscreen wasn’t in our family vocabulary. Coppertone was put on us to protect us from the sun but it really just made me burn. Now I know better and I’m an avid fan of SPF products. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order.
1. SUPERGOOP CITY SUNSCREEN SERUM* – Unfortunately I’m out of this but I want to repurchase it. The serum is SPF 30+, has no fragrance and is very lightweight. I used this as my SPF and moisturizer and primer – a triple threat!

2. SUPERGOOP DAILY CORRECT CC CREAM* – This is what I’m using now from Supergoop. It’s actually a lightly tinted SPF cream that provides SPF 35 coverage. It comes in three shades; I have Light to Medium which is a little dark for me (see swatch below). This can also be used as a primer and sunscreen that helps even out skintone. If the color is right for you then it will give you the corrective cream coverage that is so popular with CC Creams.

3. SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* – How many of you forget about your eye area when thinking about sunscreen? I just assumed my regular sunscreen would be enough but it’s absolutely not. I don’t get that close to my eyes with sunscreen plus that area is so tender and prone to showing aging. This SPF 37 eye cream is a big favorite of mine and not just because it has the best applicator in town.

4. MELANSOL 100% NATURAL SUNSCREEN SPF 30 *- This particular SPF 30 sunscreen is not for everyone but it’s perfect for those of us with very fair skin that never tans and always burns. MelanSol makes a variety of sunscreens for those of you who have a different risk level from the sun. This SPF 30 version is great for midday application when the sun is at its peak or for high activity levels when you’ll be out in the sun for longer periods. It contains active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in its natural, cruelty free, vegan formula. I’ve found it to be hydrating and non-greasy. I love having a product that I know will have extra protection when I’m out on the water or in my yard with the little ones.

5. NEOVA DNA DAMAGE CONTROL *- A broad spectrum SPF 40 makes this a great choice if you want to be without foundation yet have some coverage when outside. They could call this a CC Cream since it’s described as a Color Correction cream that illuminates and brightens with a tinted, pearl finish. It comes in just one shade though with a very light tint. My skin isn’t good enough to go out in public with just this but I’ll wear it for days I’m at home alone or with a light foundation over it if I do go out. I’ve been very impressed with the Neova line and this is no exception.

6. ALGENIST ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT UV DEFENSE FLUID SPF 50* – This is another of my old favorite sunscreens which I’ve used up. I’ve talked about it several times in posts. It contains Titanium Dioxide (2%), Zinc Oxide (17.1%) and Octinoxate (7.5%) along with the other fabulous Algenist ingredients that make this brand unique. I won’t go on about it since you can read my previous linked review other than to say, it’s great!

7. and 8. AVEENO PROTECT + HYDRATE LOTION SUNSCREEN* – Aveeno makes two different Protect+Hydrate Lotion Sunscreens. For your face you’ll want Broad Spectrum SPF 50 which is oil free and non-comedogenic. For your body (and face) you want Broad Spectrum SPF 30 which is very hydrating while being protective. These are both new products for 2014 along with an SPF 70 formula. Aveeno is priced right at $9.95 for a 3 oz tube and it delivers sunscreen in an advanced formula that uses their patented Colloidal Oatmeal.

9. and 10. B. KAMINS LIP BALM SPF 20 and VAULT RETRACTABLE LIP BALMS SPF 30 – We absolutely can’t forget our lips and here are two brands that I love using. Lisa reviewed the B Kamins so I picked it up at a local boutique, it’s actually more of a lip protectant than what we think of with a lip balm. It comes in a tube and squeezes out in an emollient balm. Vault Retractable Lip Balms are a twist on the typical balm because it was originally created for use during sports as well as other times. It takes three easy steps: PUSH the plunger (the bottom half) until the tip locks in place; TWIST the plunger to deliver the lip balm; CLICK the trigger to release the tip which closes it back up. Stick it in your pocket and it’s done. Nothing to fall off or lose. While they have a clear lip balm, it’s the tinted ones that are my favorites. There are 8 lightly tinted balms and they’ve lowered the price to $6.99 (from $9) and have free shipping.

Lisa’s Top Ten Self Tanners

Self tanners have come a long way, baby. Years ago they were difficult to apply, smelled horrific, and turned you an unnatural looking orange. There are some truly great options out there today, options so great no one should be afraid to faux tan! I put my self tanners into two categories:  one night stands (these only last until you wash them off) and marriage material (these give you more committment – at least one week). Here are my top ten self tanners. The first five are my favorite one night stands and the next five are my favorite marriages.

1.  Gleam Body Radiance

Gleam Body Radiance

Just in time for summer, Makeup Wars chooses favorite sunscreens

Welcome to Makeup Wars. This is the week that we are drumming it into your heads that you need to use sunscreen. Not really but we hope that by sharing our favorite sunscreens with you we can remind you of the importance of using sunscreen and using it properly. I’m not a person who ordinarily goes out in the sun. My idea of getting my Vitamin D is by walking to and from my car or sitting in the shade when I’m outdoors. But no matter how I’m getting sun, I’ve learned that wearing sunscreen and using the right amount is paramount to keeping my skin looking more youthful. Yes I envy the friends I have who look fabulous and thinner with a tan, but I don’t envy their wrinkles and I don’t take chances.

Favorite favorite sunscreens: Algenist, Supergoop, B.Kamins Sun Defense

Favorite favorite sunscreens: Algenist, Supergoop, B.Kamins Sun Defense

I divided up my sunscreen loves into two categories: face and body. I prefer to use SPF that’s formulated specifically for the face and has a moisturizing effect at the same time. My three favorites are: Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum with SPF 30

Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum

Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum

Algenist Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50

Algenist Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50

Algenist Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50

And my newest: B.Kamins Sun Defense SPF 30 Lotion. Since I’ve previously reviewed and loved the first two for their lightweight coverage I’ll tell you more about the B.Kamins and why I like it so much. (This was sent for review.)

B.Kamins Sun Defense SPF30

B.Kamins Sun Defense SPF30

B.Kamins Sun Defense is both fragrance free and oil free which is what I look for in a facial formula. Of course it can be used anywhere on your body too but I save the precious stuff for my face. This provides both UVA and UVB protection and is especially good for sensitive skin. It has both physical and light absorbing sunblocks. Did you know that if you take certain medications that it makes your skin more photosensitive? That’s a big reason to use this sunscreen. I’ve always burned very easily and never before realized that medications could have had a part in this.

B. Kamins Sun Defense SPF30 swatch

B. Kamins Sun Defense SPF30 swatch

This has a very creamy formula and comes out as a peachy pink color. I like that I can see if I missed any spots. It takes about 2 – 3 minutes to absorb but from that point on I can put on any type of foundation over it. I find I don’t need any kind of serum since this does everything in one – it primes, it moisturizes and it protects. I love that there’s never a scent even if I get overheated later in the day. I haven’t had any reactions to Sun Defense. It’s a great formula that I’m happy to recommend.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreens

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreens

For my body I’ve started using the Neutrogena line. I was sent 2 Neutrogena sunscreens to test and now I find I have to share them with my husband. Darn it. My husband has had several basal cell carcinomas removed and his dermatologist insisted that he not only wear a hat but that he use sunscreen. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch was on the list he received from the derm of products to use. We both use this since I slather my neck and arms with it when I’m getting dressed in the morning and he uses it for his face, arm and chest area. What’s great about Dry Touch is that it’s Broad Spectrum with SPF45. Plus Neutrogena uses Helioplex Technology that makes its sunscreens photostable. Neutrogena makes the Ultra Sheer Dry Touch in different SPF strengths including SPF 45, 55, 75, 85 and 100. I recently saw a package of this at Costco with 2 regular size and 2 purse size which I’ll soon be buying.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen

The other Neutrogena sunscreen that I’m using is the Ultra Sheer Body Mist. This is also a Broad Spectrum sunscreen. I have the SPF 100 and it also comes in SPF 30, 45 and 70. What I love about the Body Mist is how easy it is to use. I’m at the mercy of a two year old who believes he should be outside all the time. I keep my Ultra Sheer Body Mist by the door along with a Twistband for my hair. I can spray it on the back of my neck quickly this way so I can play outside with him. It’s got a light fresh mist that doesn’t stain my clothes or get my hair wet. I can also give him a quick spray without him objecting although I’m going to pick up Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids since the small pool is about to come out.

So there you have my review and long winded explanation of my favorite sunscreens. I can’t wait to read what the other Makeup Wars bloggers have to share. I’ll be outside more this summer than any other so this is vital information for me. Please click on the logos to read more. Do you have a favorite? I’d love to know. — Marcia

My favorite sunscreens 2013

Side by Side: Supergoop SPF – Self Tanning Sunscreen Mousse and City Sunscreen Serum

The days are getting longer and the sun is shining brighter, so Supergoop is on our minds – as well as on our skin!  Everyone needs to wear sunscreen, and thankfully it’s no longer like the old days when SPF products were smelly and left a nasty white cast to the skin.  Now there are wonderful, thoughtful options available for getting your SPF and getting beautiful at the same time.  Today Lisa and Marcia tell you all about their picks from Supergoop, a fabulous line with a funny name.

Lisa’s side:

Here’s a riddle for you:  How does someone get a great tan AND avoid the harmful rays of the sun at the same time?   Answer:  Supergoop Self-Tanning Sunscreen Mousse ($38)!

Supergoop Self-Tanning Sunscreen Mousse

The Self- Tanning Sunscreen Mousse has an SPF of 20.  Not only does it provide sun protection, it also gives you a gradual faux-tan.  Normally I apply self tanner and then put sunscreen over it, so this combo products saves a step (and some money!).

love the super hygenic top!

It has my favorite fantastic hygenic top.  The product is protected from light, and it squeezes out so that no dirt or bacteria will contaminate the rest of the lotion.  Love it!!

Multi-purpose products always make me happy!

Not only do you get sun protection and a faux tan at the same time, you get a beautiful daily moisturizer.  This sophisticated moisturizer has Parsol, SP3 Complex, and Vitamin E to battle free radicals. As a self tanner, the color develops gradually, so if you use it as your daily sunscreen you will always have a natural, healthy looking glow.  This isn’t for getting a really deep tanned look. And as sun protection, it has broad spectrum UV protection with high water resistance.

Self-Tanning Mousse swatch

The mousse is actually a light lotion that melts right into skin.  It smells like cucumbers, although the scent isn’t overpowering and it fades quickly.  You just can’t beat two products in one – less time is spent applying lotions, less money is spent on products, and one application provides twice the benefit!!

Marcia’s side:

Lisa is always talking about Supergoop! It can be embarrassing when you are out for lunch and someone talks “supergoop”.  But once I got my hands on Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum I realized what was getting her so excited.

Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum

In some ways Lisa and I are like two peas in a pod but when it comes to skintone that’s where we differ. I’m like Snow White and she’s like the dwarves. She loves to be outside and loves that sunkisssed look. I believe in the power of air conditioning and my very fair skin (and obviously fairy tales). Therefore I need a great sunscreen that’s not going to leave a funny cast on my skin; one that doesn’t have a fragrance; and one that doesn’t interfere with my foundation. Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum to the rescue just like the handsome prince.

love the packaging

I too love the hygenic packaging. The pump is easy to use and I don’t end up wasting the sunscreen since I can control the amount that comes out. This is the perfect sunscreen for my face. It’s not too thick yet it provides SPF 30+ protection that also moisturizes. It was created for normal to dry skin to help protect against the premature signs of aging.

Serum swatch

The texture of this is so light. It’s between a serum and a cream. It’s not loose like a serum but it’s not heavy like a cream. It blends in quickly so that you can finish putting on any other makeup over it.

Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum comes in two sizes – $42 for the full size or $20 for a 20 ml travel size that’s perfect to keep with you. Snow White and Marcia approve of this sunscreen and we believe you will too.

Supergoop is available on their website as well as Sephora, Nordstrom, Dermstore and a slew of other shops that know quality when they come across it.

Supergoop: is it really that super?

I love the sun, but I don’t like wrinkles.  Or freckles.  Or hyperpigmentation.  Or worse.  But…I also don’t like stinky, thick, difficult-to-absorb SPF.  So what’s a girl to do?

The answer:  check out Supergoop!  I remember the first time I saw this line at Sephora, I was intrigued – what an unusual name.  What in world would make me want to buy goop, even if it’s super?  Well, when the goop is SPF, you definitely want something super…and this line delivers.

Supergoop Save Face AM Moisturizer

I don’t care what part of the world you live in, or what season it is – you need SPF.  However, no one needs an extra skin care step in the morning.  Save Face A.M. Moisturizer with Advanced UV Protection SPF 35+ ($28) is a multi-tasking product, providing excellent sun protection within a morning moisturizer.

I love the extremely sanitary top that dispenses a small amount of product – I find that I need about three pumps for my face and neck.  It’s a large bottle that lasts forever.  The lotion is medium weight, not sticky, and I can’t believe it but it soaks in quickly without leaving that awful white cast on the skin.

There are three main ingredients in this wonderful workhorse of a moisturizer:  Parsol, which provides long wavelength UVA rays; Blueberry Extract, which is an antioxident that improves the skin’s texture, elasticity, and smoothness; and Vitamin E which protects the skin from free radicals.

This moisturizer/SPF 35+ doesn’t smell and does a fantastic job of moisturizing the skin.  I truly love it.

There are a few other items that I highly recommend from Supergoop.  If you have dry, chapped lips, you for sure need to check out the Mint Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30 ($8.50).

Supergoop Mint Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30

Oh my, this stuff is…well…super!  It’s a fantastic gel-type lip balm that really protects the delicate lip area from the sun.  Protection from UVA and UVB comes from Parsol 1789 and Parsol SLX.  Octinoxate UV also protects the lips from short wavelength UVB rays, and lips are kept super soft and healthy with Shea Butter and Vitamins E and C.

I love the applicator for this lip balm, it makes applying very easy and convenient.

Here’s a swatch of the lip balm.  Looks sort of like thin Vaseline, doesn’t it?  It’s not icky-sticky like vaseline, though, it feels very soft and smooth on with no stickiness at all.  The mint gives your lips a slightly cool sensation at first application, which does fade away quickly.  The lip balm truly softens and protects, and it lasts quite a while for a lip balm.

Supergoop Sunscreen Swipe

And I always have a few Supergoop Sunscreen Swipes (box of 21 Swipes is $34) in my purse.  You never know when you might need a little extra sun protection, and if you have kids you will for sure find these indispensible.  They are paraben-free, sweat and water-resistant, and provide SPF 30+ protection.  In addition to the box of Swipes, the single packets are available in several different kits that are listed on the website.

Supergoop is super easy to find, it’s in larger stores like Sephora, Nordstrom, and Barneys, and you can also peruse the line and shop on the Supergoop website.  Don’t forget your sun protection, even if it’s the middle of winter where you live.  Supergoop makes being safe a beautiful thing.  – Lisa
