Makeup Wars Favorite New Product – my pick Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Makeup Wars has decided to feature a favorite new product. I actually have three but I’m narrowing it down to just one very special one: Murad Invisblur Perfecting Shield. This primer is everything to me and I’m thrilled to use it daily and choose this as my special feature. Mine came from Beauty Brands* which is a wonderful website that I discovered when a blogger mentioned a sale they were having. I love sales and specials and I find that Beauty Brands always has something going on. They carry lines that are both established like MURAD and independent ones.

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

My blog partner Lisa is all about primers and I’m all about serums but I’d heard so many wonderful things about Murad Invisblur Perfecting Shield that I just couldn’t wait to use it. Once I got it I realized it’s much more than a primer. It’s a moisturizer, sunscreen, anti-aging treatment and blurring product wrapped up into one fabulous product.

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

The texture of Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30/PA+++ is what makes this unique for me. It’s gel like and feels soothing on my skin. I find I need the smallest amount of it to cover my entire face. I can use this over a serum or without one, I can use this under moisturizer or use it as my moisturizing product. It’s designed to promote total skin perfection. It’s even wonderful for those days we are running around without foundation because it provides so many benefits as well as protective ingredients (see below).

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

One of the reasons I didn’t use primers that much previously is that I found too many of them balled up when I’d put on BB/CC Cream or foundation. There’s never a problem with that with Murad Invisiblur. Plus it makes my foundation last so much longer. Since I’ve been using this (just under 1 month) I don’t have to touch up foundation ever. I can put on my makeup in the morning and other than touching up blush, lips or eyeliner I’m done.

Invisiblur is gluten free and non-comedogenic. For me one of the main benefits is that it helps blur the large pores on my face. I work hard to keep those to a minimum and Invisiblur works hard to make them look like they aren’t there. There’s never a greasy feeling plus I don’t have to wait for it to set before applying anything else. murad invisiblur box backIf you want a touch of luxury that takes the place of at least 3 products in your morning routine, then Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30/PA+++ is the answer to your dreams, just like it is to mine. — Marcia

8 beauty items you need to toss now! Spring Clean Refresh with Meijer Beauty

*sponsored post*

Spring CleaningTime to toss! I am gearing up for some spring cleaning and first on my list is my vanity. Clearing out feels so good…I love it when things are organized and sparkling clean. Besides, extra space means room for new things!
Does your cosmetics stash look like this??

Does your cosmetics stash look like this??

Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets and pantries – it is so important to also tackle that beauty stash. Time goes by fast and before your know it you have beauty items that are years old. Anything you use with your hands or put on your face eventually gathers bacteria and can cause breakouts and other skin issues. Items with active ingredients become inactive over time, becoming an exercise in futility. Besides, it’s fun to go through and edit your cosmetics and skin care, plus what a great opportunity to go shopping to replenish!
If you are like me, the memory fades, so when you purchase a new item mark the date on the bottom of the jar with a black sharpie. It makes spring cleaning much easier. Also, most skin care items have an open jar symbol followed by a number and the letter ‘M’.  This tells you how many months you can use the product after opening it – so 6M means six months after opening, 9M means nine months after opening, etcetera. Don’t forget, when using products packaged in jars NEVER stick your fingers in the jar. Use a small cosmetics spatula to spoon out the product so you aren’t introducing bacteria into the jar.
Here are the top 8 items that you need to toss, along with some suggestions for replacements. Meijer just announced an exciting lineup of new beauty items, so it’s a great place to shop to renew that beauty routine and you can find all of my suggestions there.
L'Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Serum

L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Serum

1.  Serum:  I am sure this is no surprise. Typically serum is in air tight packaging, which keeps ingredient integrity, but once you start using a serum it’s only good for about six months. Toss it even earlier if the texture changes or it starts to smell weird. If you need to replenish, check out L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler.  It is wonderfully affordable and has hyaluronic acid to plump skin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation

2.  Foundation:  obviously, liquid foundation is a bacteria collector, especially jar-based foundation that is exposed to the air. But did you know that powder foundation also goes bad? Think about it…you dip your brush into the foundation, the brush goes on your skin, then you dip that brush back onto the foundation…all those skin oils are transferred into the powder, which means after a while it becomes pretty dirty. Toss that old stuff and try something new, like L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation.  This is opaque enough to use as foundation, and it also works great as a pressed powder to cancel out a shiny nose.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom

3.  Mascara:  this is a must-toss every season! After a while, mascara dries out and loses its lash lengthening and thickening power. Plus, any product that isn’t a solid is in danger of collecting bacteria. Glam out with your mascara and then replace it as soon as it shows any sign of dryness or starts to smell ‘off’, typically at about three months. By the way, resist ‘pumping’ your mascara – it makes it dry out even more quickly, and always toss your mascaras if you have an eye infection. Two mascaras to try for long, lush lashes are Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom.

L'Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer

L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer

4.  Moisturizer:  jar moisturizer lasts at the most 6 months. Go through all those open jars you know you have sitting on your shelves and toss anything you opened last fall. Not only do they become a potential hazard for your skin because of bacteria, but the active ingredients stop working so why bother? Try something new, like L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer to smooth out those lines and wrinkles.

Degree Dryspray Deodorant

Degree Dry Spray Deodorant

5.  Deodorant:  yes, deodorant does have a shelf life! While most have expiration dates, a good rule of thumb is two years. It’s a great idea to stock up on deodorant when it is on sale, but be sure to write your purchase date on the extras if they don’t have an expiration date. A great replacement is Degree Dry Spray. It sprays on dry and protects for up to 48 hours, so no worries on those hectic late mornings!

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen

6.  Sunscreen:  sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time and you sure don’t want to get a sunburn thanks to an outdated bottle. Most have an expiration date, but the longest any sunscreen will last is three years. My absolute favorite and a great one for restocking is Neutrogena Cooldry Sport.  I can even get my kids to put this on without a fight.

Cover Girl Lip Lava

Cover Girl Lip Lava

7.  Lip gloss:  a liquid product you apply to your lips?  Of course lip gloss is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to beauty items that go bad and need to be replaced regularly. Replace your old lip glosses with Cover Girl Lip Lava. I adore this lip gloss!  My favorite shade is Lava-Rider. I put it on then blot and I have a beautiful shimmery stain that lasts and lasts.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser

8.  Face cleanser:  these only last a year, so often a big bottle will expire before it’s gone. If your face cleanser isn’t working well, the consequences will definitely be evident to everyone! A great option for replacing your old stuff is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser. White tea and vitamin E ensure clean skin without any dryness.

Embrace spring cleaning and refresh that beauty stash! Be sure to go to Meijer Beauty to check out their new lineup of cosmetic and skin care items and restock for a beautiful YOU.  – Lisa

The weather can still be pretty warm, and sitting in the stands can be a rather sweaty experience.  Just pop a few Whish Deodorant Swipes ($8) in your purse, and you’ll be able to freshen up any time.  With consistent use, these also inhibit hair growth – that’s a pretty nice side effect.  You can find them at Nordstom.com.

Take the day off with Japonesque Pro Performance Makeup Wipes

Speaking of handy, Japonesque Pro Makeup Artist Wipes ($12.50 for 20 wipes) are the absolute definition.  Stadiums and game stands can be grimy and dirty, and these wipes dissolve away dirt, not to mention makeup.  They are great for last-minute touch-ups, and even better for wiping away the day after game time is over.  The vitamin E helps to ensure your skin is all ready to be glammed up for the next game time.  You can find these at Ulta.

With these four beauty necessities, every game day is a glam day.  It’s everything you need to start with Friday Night football and keep on going through Sunday!  – Lisa

Dare to bare arms with Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen

kate somerville body-glow_carton_tubeHow many of you avoid tank tops because they show your arms?  I used to have such great arms…but a few months ago I caught a glimpse in the mirror while wearing a tank top and thought, are you kidding?  That can’t be me!!  I decided no more tank tops in public.  Just forget it.  Soon after, Kate Somerville sent her Body Glow Sunscreen ($45) and suddenly tank tops in public became possible again.

So everyone knows that sunscreen is a must, and this lightweight body lotion has stabilized avobenzone so it has all the broad spectrum protection I need.  This means it’s anti-aging, and it has some terrific antioxidant ingredients that fight free radicals and keep skin looking younger.  The really effective antioxidants include vitamin E, algae extract, and rosemary extract.  Body Glow Sunscreen also has caffeine for firming and improved texture with regular use.

The Body Glow Sunscreen has a beautifully smooth and light texture that soaks in quickly and doesn’t leave a heavy, tacky feel.  It still is a serious moisturizer, though, with mango and shea butter doing the heavy-duty dry skin repair.   The broad spectrum protection, antioxidants, lightweight texture and excellent moisturizing ability are enough to convince me…but it’s the light reflective pearls that truly sell me on this sunscreen moisturizer.  Body Glow Sunscreen gives skin a golden shimmery gleam that makes saggy, wrinkled, and unattractive and imperfect skin suddenly look fantastic.  The glow isn’t exactly natural, but it certainly isn’t overdone to disco ball proportions.

Glowing hands from my Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen

Glowing hands from my Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen

The only issues with Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen are the fragrance, which is a very light floral that could be an issue for those with sensitivity, and the price which is on the expensive side.  But let me assure you, you get what you pay for with this first-rate sunscreen glowtion.

If you want to keep the right to bare arms (or legs or chest or whatever you dare to bare), I highly suggest picking up this nifty body lotion that protects the skin from the sun, fights free-radicals, moisturizes and adds a beautiful glow.  – Lisa

Giveaway and review! Skinn Cosmetics Daily Defense Suncreen Serum

Skinn Daily Defense CollageA few weeks ago, my cousin took her young daughter to a local roller coaster park for the day.  It was overcast, but afterward her daughter was in some serious pain from a sunburned nose and cheeks.  My cousin, however, had no sunburn at all – because her foundation included an SPF.  She didn’t even realize the protection she was getting, and with all the clouds she didn’t think sunscreen was necessary for her daughter.  That got me thinking…how many times have I been spared a sunburn because one of my facial products included SPF?  I am sure the number is in the thousands.  Skinn Cosmetics recently sent me their Daily Defense Anti-Aging Antioxidant Sunscreen Serum ($35) to try, and you can win one of these multi-tasking serums for yourself!
Skinn Cosmetics Daily Defense Sunscreen Serum

Skinn Cosmetics Daily Defense Sunscreen Serum

Every morning after cleansing and toning I use a treatment serum.  It’s the perfect time to give skin a dose of anti-aging ingredients that fight off free-radical damage all day.  Plus, the right serum gives my skin that extra boost of moisture that it needs to stay plumped and  younger looking.  After my serum I apply eye cream and moisturizer…but I have to admit, some of the best daytime moisturizers don’t have sunscreen and I’m awful about remembering one extra step for SPF protection.

Want more good news?  This serum is completely fragrance-free with SPF 30 and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.  Using Skinn Cosmetics Daily Defense Sunscreen Serum on your face, neck, and chest will not only fight wrinkles and inflammation, but also moisturize and protect skin from the harmful rays of the sun.  What a perfect way to get your SPF and all the treatment your skin deserves!

Top 10 Tuesday Sun Protection Favorites

TOP TEN TUESDAY picked an important topic this week – sunscreen. I can’t believe the number of years I didn’t use sunscreen or used it sporadically. I’m paying the consequences now with too many sunspots. As an oldie, but goodie, sunscreen wasn’t in our family vocabulary. Coppertone was put on us to protect us from the sun but it really just made me burn. Now I know better and I’m an avid fan of SPF products. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order.
1. SUPERGOOP CITY SUNSCREEN SERUM* – Unfortunately I’m out of this but I want to repurchase it. The serum is SPF 30+, has no fragrance and is very lightweight. I used this as my SPF and moisturizer and primer – a triple threat!

2. SUPERGOOP DAILY CORRECT CC CREAM* – This is what I’m using now from Supergoop. It’s actually a lightly tinted SPF cream that provides SPF 35 coverage. It comes in three shades; I have Light to Medium which is a little dark for me (see swatch below). This can also be used as a primer and sunscreen that helps even out skintone. If the color is right for you then it will give you the corrective cream coverage that is so popular with CC Creams.

3. SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* – How many of you forget about your eye area when thinking about sunscreen? I just assumed my regular sunscreen would be enough but it’s absolutely not. I don’t get that close to my eyes with sunscreen plus that area is so tender and prone to showing aging. This SPF 37 eye cream is a big favorite of mine and not just because it has the best applicator in town.

Supergoop Anti-Aging eyecream with SPF37

4. MELANSOL 100% NATURAL SUNSCREEN SPF 30 *- This particular SPF 30 sunscreen is not for everyone but it’s perfect for those of us with very fair skin that never tans and always burns. MelanSol makes a variety of sunscreens for those of you who have a different risk level from the sun. This SPF 30 version is great for midday application when the sun is at its peak or for high activity levels when you’ll be out in the sun for longer periods. It contains active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in its natural, cruelty free, vegan formula. I’ve found it to be hydrating and non-greasy. I love having a product that I know will have extra protection when I’m out on the water or in my yard with the little ones.

5. NEOVA DNA DAMAGE CONTROL *- A broad spectrum SPF 40 makes this a great choice if you want to be without foundation yet have some coverage when outside. They could call this a CC Cream since it’s described as a Color Correction cream that illuminates and brightens with a tinted, pearl finish. It comes in just one shade though with a very light tint. My skin isn’t good enough to go out in public with just this but I’ll wear it for days I’m at home alone or with a light foundation over it if I do go out. I’ve been very impressed with the Neova line and this is no exception.

6. ALGENIST ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT UV DEFENSE FLUID SPF 50* – This is another of my old favorite sunscreens which I’ve used up. I’ve talked about it several times in posts. It contains Titanium Dioxide (2%), Zinc Oxide (17.1%) and Octinoxate (7.5%) along with the other fabulous Algenist ingredients that make this brand unique. I won’t go on about it since you can read my previous linked review other than to say, it’s great!

7. and 8. AVEENO PROTECT + HYDRATE LOTION SUNSCREEN* – Aveeno makes two different Protect+Hydrate Lotion Sunscreens. For your face you’ll want Broad Spectrum SPF 50 which is oil free and non-comedogenic. For your body (and face) you want Broad Spectrum SPF 30 which is very hydrating while being protective. These are both new products for 2014 along with an SPF 70 formula. Aveeno is priced right at $9.95 for a 3 oz tube and it delivers sunscreen in an advanced formula that uses their patented Colloidal Oatmeal.

Aveeno Protect+Hydrate sunscreens

9. and 10. B. KAMINS LIP BALM SPF 20 and VAULT RETRACTABLE LIP BALMS SPF 30 – We absolutely can’t forget our lips and here are two brands that I love using. Lisa reviewed the B Kamins so I picked it up at a local boutique, it’s actually more of a lip protectant than what we think of with a lip balm. It comes in a tube and squeezes out in an emollient balm. Vault Retractable Lip Balms are a twist on the typical balm because it was originally created for use during sports as well as other times. It takes three easy steps: PUSH the plunger (the bottom half) until the tip locks in place; TWIST the plunger to deliver the lip balm; CLICK the trigger to release the tip which closes it back up. Stick it in your pocket and it’s done. Nothing to fall off or lose. While they have a clear lip balm, it’s the tinted ones that are my favorites. There are 8 lightly tinted balms and they’ve lowered the price to $6.99 (from $9) and have free shipping.
