Top 10 Tuesday Sun Protection Favorites

TOP TEN TUESDAY picked an important topic this week – sunscreen. I can’t believe the number of years I didn’t use sunscreen or used it sporadically. I’m paying the consequences now with too many sunspots. As an oldie, but goodie, sunscreen wasn’t in our family vocabulary. Coppertone was put on us to protect us from the sun but it really just made me burn. Now I know better and I’m an avid fan of SPF products. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order.
1. SUPERGOOP CITY SUNSCREEN SERUM* – Unfortunately I’m out of this but I want to repurchase it. The serum is SPF 30+, has no fragrance and is very lightweight. I used this as my SPF and moisturizer and primer – a triple threat!

2. SUPERGOOP DAILY CORRECT CC CREAM* – This is what I’m using now from Supergoop. It’s actually a lightly tinted SPF cream that provides SPF 35 coverage. It comes in three shades; I have Light to Medium which is a little dark for me (see swatch below). This can also be used as a primer and sunscreen that helps even out skintone. If the color is right for you then it will give you the corrective cream coverage that is so popular with CC Creams.

3. SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* – How many of you forget about your eye area when thinking about sunscreen? I just assumed my regular sunscreen would be enough but it’s absolutely not. I don’t get that close to my eyes with sunscreen plus that area is so tender and prone to showing aging. This SPF 37 eye cream is a big favorite of mine and not just because it has the best applicator in town.

4. MELANSOL 100% NATURAL SUNSCREEN SPF 30 *- This particular SPF 30 sunscreen is not for everyone but it’s perfect for those of us with very fair skin that never tans and always burns. MelanSol makes a variety of sunscreens for those of you who have a different risk level from the sun. This SPF 30 version is great for midday application when the sun is at its peak or for high activity levels when you’ll be out in the sun for longer periods. It contains active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in its natural, cruelty free, vegan formula. I’ve found it to be hydrating and non-greasy. I love having a product that I know will have extra protection when I’m out on the water or in my yard with the little ones.

5. NEOVA DNA DAMAGE CONTROL *- A broad spectrum SPF 40 makes this a great choice if you want to be without foundation yet have some coverage when outside. They could call this a CC Cream since it’s described as a Color Correction cream that illuminates and brightens with a tinted, pearl finish. It comes in just one shade though with a very light tint. My skin isn’t good enough to go out in public with just this but I’ll wear it for days I’m at home alone or with a light foundation over it if I do go out. I’ve been very impressed with the Neova line and this is no exception.

6. ALGENIST ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT UV DEFENSE FLUID SPF 50* – This is another of my old favorite sunscreens which I’ve used up. I’ve talked about it several times in posts. It contains Titanium Dioxide (2%), Zinc Oxide (17.1%) and Octinoxate (7.5%) along with the other fabulous Algenist ingredients that make this brand unique. I won’t go on about it since you can read my previous linked review other than to say, it’s great!

7. and 8. AVEENO PROTECT + HYDRATE LOTION SUNSCREEN* – Aveeno makes two different Protect+Hydrate Lotion Sunscreens. For your face you’ll want Broad Spectrum SPF 50 which is oil free and non-comedogenic. For your body (and face) you want Broad Spectrum SPF 30 which is very hydrating while being protective. These are both new products for 2014 along with an SPF 70 formula. Aveeno is priced right at $9.95 for a 3 oz tube and it delivers sunscreen in an advanced formula that uses their patented Colloidal Oatmeal.

9. and 10. B. KAMINS LIP BALM SPF 20 and VAULT RETRACTABLE LIP BALMS SPF 30 – We absolutely can’t forget our lips and here are two brands that I love using. Lisa reviewed the B Kamins so I picked it up at a local boutique, it’s actually more of a lip protectant than what we think of with a lip balm. It comes in a tube and squeezes out in an emollient balm. Vault Retractable Lip Balms are a twist on the typical balm because it was originally created for use during sports as well as other times. It takes three easy steps: PUSH the plunger (the bottom half) until the tip locks in place; TWIST the plunger to deliver the lip balm; CLICK the trigger to release the tip which closes it back up. Stick it in your pocket and it’s done. Nothing to fall off or lose. While they have a clear lip balm, it’s the tinted ones that are my favorites. There are 8 lightly tinted balms and they’ve lowered the price to $6.99 (from $9) and have free shipping.

Hada Labo Tokyo’s summer gems

Hada Labo makes me happy but sad. I previously reviewed two products from Hada Labo Tokyo, Anti-Aging Hydrator and Skin Plumping Gel, and both are absolutely fab. I’ve already repurchased the Anti-Aging Hydrator since it’s made a big difference in the hydration of my skin. Today I’m going to review two more of their amazing products that were sent to Beauty Info Zone to test. So why is it that I love the products but they make me sad? Hada Labo Tokyo only makes 5 products…. that’s it. They need to expand their line so I can get in line to buy them.

Hada Labo Tokyo is the first Japanese company to bring mass market products to the US. It’s sold at Ulta, Ulta.com and drugstore.com but I’ve also found it at Walgreens. One day I went to Walgreen and stopped dead in my tracks in the doorway blocking everyone since there were banners for Hada Labo. I was so excited that I rushed to the skincare section to see for myself.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Two products you should look for if you are at either of these stores or sites are Hada Labo Tokyo Protecting Day Lotion SPF 18 ($17.99) and Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser ($11.99). They come with the “Marcia of Beauty Info Zone” stamp of approval.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

The Hydrating Facial Cleanser is especially wonderful for my skin since it contains hyaluronic acid. Now I’m fully aware that you are washing this away but I still love the fact that it includes this great ingredient. This is a foaming cleanser that starts off as a cream.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

I’m not sure if you can see just how rich and creamy it is. Many times a foaming cleanser is loose and doesn’t help with hydration but that’s not the case with this Hydrating Facial Cleanser. You can feel it moisturizing while cleansing at the same time. It’s a deep cleanser that cuts through the grime of the day while working to clean away any impurities.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Lately I’ve been keeping this in the shower since the plastic tube won’t break if it falls.

Key Ingredients:

  • Hyaluronic Acid PLUS: Powerful hydrator, merges with skin providing 2 times more hydration than regular HA to effectively restore skin’s natural hydrating levels.
  • Hyaloveil-P: Adhesive Hyaluronic Acid designed to adhere to skin, keeping it moist even after rinsing. Finishes the skin with fresh feeling.
  • Safe and gentle cleansers derived from natural amino acids.
Hada Labo Tokyo

Hada Labo Tokyo

Both the Hydrating Cleanser and Protecting Day Lotion SPF18 contain what Hada Labo Tokyo calls Super Hyaluronic Acid (or Hyaluronic Acid Plus). As you can see by my blurry picture, super hyaluronic acid is an excellent hydrator and skin plumper. If it’s going to make my skin retain any youthful qualities, then I want it in buckets!

Hada Labo Tokyo Protecting Day Lotion is the other product I’m using. I love that this has no fragrance and is oil free. My skin totally changes in hot weather. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that my dry skin becomes an oily mess. I don’t always see the oil but I can feel it oozing inside me! I don’t break out often but in the summer I easily can. The fact that this moisturizer is oil free is a biggie for me. It’s non-comedogenic with a lightweight feel to it.

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

The only negative is that it has an SPF of 18. While it’s broad spectrum which is appreciated, I really wish it were a higher SPF. I’ve been wearing it on days that I wear a foundation or BB/CC Cream that has a higher number in sunscreen protection. I don’t spend a lot of time outside but I know that the sun can get to me anywhere I am.

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

This is one of the most comfortable moisturizers with sunscreen that I have which is why I reach for it so often. Plus with the Super Hyaluronic Acid addition I know my skin is being protected.

These products from Hada Labo Tokyo are ones I will keep in my rotation, even when I have more expensive ones around. I think it’s a great line in general and it’s one I’d really recommend to someone just starting out with quality skincare. Not only is it affordable but it has ingredients that help with premature aging. Plus it’s free from fragrance, parabens, dyes and mineral oils. Why not start off right and not have to correct your mistakes??

Have you become an afficionado of Hada Labo Tokyo? If not I think the time has come for you to start! — Marcia

Portable sun protection from Neutrogena

I know, I know, sunscreen is just one more thing to do…but it ABSOLUTELY necessary! I need sun protection that my family will actually use; a sunscreen that is so easy to apply and comfortable to wear that no one will fight me on it. Thank goodness Neutrogena sent the BIZ a few sunscreens to try out, because I have found the solutions to my families ‘issues’ with sun protection.

Neutrogena sunscreen sticks

My husband is a very smart man, so I never could figure out why he was so resistant to wearing sunscreen. Apparently he is not alone – in fact, according to Neutrogena, nearly 50% of men have admitted to not applying sunscreen over the past year and 2/3 of men feel women need to wear sunscreen more than men due to “sun sensitivity”! If that isn’t shocking enough, consider this: men often spend more time in the sun unprotected and therefore have a higher incidence of skin cancer as they age.

My hubby spends all day long in the sun and I finally found the product that has convinced him it’s not too ‘inconvenient’ to put on sunscreen. Neutrogena® BEACH DEFENSE® Sunscreen Stick ($10.99) has done the trick for me.

Beach Defense

Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen

Beach Defense

Beach Defense

Neutrogena® BEACH DEFENSE® Sunscreen Stick has broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection and it couldn’t be easier to use. The stick glides right on without any mess or stickiness. It’s water-resistant up to 80 minutes and the lightweight formula soaks right in. It’s also oil free so it doesn’t make the hubby break out. He keeps this in his truck and applies it every few hours to his face, arms, and legs…and now I don’t nag him anymore. Well, I don’t nag him about sunscreen.  It’s a great product but it’s not THAT much of a miracle!

As far as getting my kids to use sunscreen, my go-to product is Neutrogena® ULTRA SHEER® Face & Body Sunscreen Stick ($10.99). I keep this in my car and my children have no excuses – when mom comes at them with the ‘stick’ and they just stand still and let me do my thing.

UltraSheer

Neutrogena UltraSheer Face and Body Stick Sunscreen

UltraSheer

UltraSheer Sunscreen – love the wide-faced stick

Neutrogena® ULTRA SHEER® Face & Body Sunscreen Stick has a really cool wide-faced stick that makes it even easier and quicker to apply. As the name suggests, the sunscreen goes on super sheer without that greasy feel of many sunscreens. And talk about sun protection – it has Broad Spectrum SPF 70.  Like the Beach Defense, this is water-resistant and absorbs quickly, plus it doesn’t leave a shiny finish.

If you have a stubborn husband and kids, or just need a convenient and portable sunscreen, go with the stick. Neutrogena has exactly what you need.  - Lisa

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight review

Who doesn’t love a multi-tasker?  Miracle Skin Transformer SPF20 Face Spotlight ($48) is a skin enhancer that does five different things: hydrate, prime, enhance, illuminate & protect. MST kindly sent this to each of us for review. With 5 ways to improve our skin, we were thrilled to try it out.

Miracle Skin Transformer FACE Spotlight

Miracle Skin Transformer FACE Spotlight

The mineral pigments and anti-aging ingredients work hard to:

  • Illuminate skin, while reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Minimize the appearance of pore size and uneven skin texture.
  • Hydrate to provide long lasting nourishment and anti-aging benefits.
  • Help protect against future sun damage with UVA/UVB SPF 20.

So how does it work for pale-faced Marcia and faux-tanned Lisa?

Marcia’s Side:

Miracle Skin Transformer products I use

Miracle Skin Transformer products I use

As you can see I have a stash of MST products that get used on a regular basis. The newest addition to this is Face Spotlight. MST also makes a similar product called Miracle Skin Transformer FACE. The difference is that the one we’re sharing today is tinted with illuminating particles that make you glow while the original FACE gives a matte look. Let’s learn about these 5 enhancements:

HydrateFace Spotlight nourishes skin with a bevy of ingredients like Saw Palmetto and Passion Fruit extracts. It contains Vitamins  and CoEnzyme Q10 to deliver hydration to your skin. But the most important ingredient that helps hydrate is Glycerin which also helps smooth your skin.

Prime - You can use Face Spotlight as a primer or a foundation to give your skin a light golden glow. I personally use this by either mixing a little into a foundation or just on my cheeks under foundation.

Enhance - Face Spotlight works to visibly reduce the look of pores, fine lines and skin texture. That’s enhancement!!

Illuminate - There is a light gold tint to Face Spotlight that has some teeny little sparkles in it.

Face Transformer swatch, can you see the sparkle?

Face Transformer swatch, can you see the sparkle?

Protect - with SPF 20 Broad Spectrum sunscreen, this protects your face from UVA/UVB rays. If you are counting on this as sunscreen please don’t forget to reapply after 2 hours.

Lisa’s Side:

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight

I am more of a full coverage gal, so Face Spotlight is not something I use as a foundation. However, it is terrific under foundation. It evens out my skin tone and it has that pearlized glow that really perks up my look. I love it on my neck, decolletage, and arms too.  Freckles are far less noticeable and of course there is the benefit of the Broad Spectrum SPF20 Sunscreen.

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight swatch

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight swatch

The ‘universal shade’ swatches dark, but it sheers out and will work for skin tones except for very fair or dark. I use a self-tanner in the summer months and this compliments it beautifully with the mineralized pigments that reflect light and help hide fine lines and wrinkles.

We found this for sale at Dermstore.com.and Ulta.com (they just call it SPOTLIGHT).  Dermstore calls it a BB Cream but that’s not how we’d describe it at all. We think that the name FACE SPOTLIGHT is the perfect description. If you want a little enhancement that doesn’t take you over the top then this is the product to try. Are you a fan of Miracle Skin Transformer like we are??

PerriconeMD Photo Plasma review and giveaway

Perricone MD Photo Plasma

Perricone MD Photo Plasma

I can almost guarantee that when someone mentions Perricone MD skincare that you think of Cold Plasma. Dr. Perricone has many great products but the one that he is the most famous for is definitely Cold Plasma. There’s a lot of love and a lot of not-so-love for that product and the main reason is that it can have a smell that people think is fishy. I’ve gone through two jars of Cold Plasma and I haven’t had that problem but I know of people who have. But now there’s the wonders of that product in an entirely new moisturizer called Photo Plasma. When this was sent I was thrilled to NOT smell it.

Perricone MD Photo Plasma

Perricone MD Photo Plasma

I’ve found so many benefits with Photo Plasma

1)      There’s no fragrance at all. Not a drop.

2)      It’s half the price of Cold Plasma ($69 for 2 oz). You can also buy a deluxe sample size of 0.5 oz for $20 at Sephora.

3)      Photo Plasma contains broad spectrum SPF 30. This was a problem for me when I used CP since it didn’t contain SPF and Dr. Perricone didn’t make one that I liked.

4)      Photo Plasma has a wonderful, lush texture yet it’s oil free.

Perricone MD Photo Plasma open

Perricone MD Photo Plasma open

5)      It contains non-chemical UVA and UVB mineral Titanium Dioxide sunscreen.

6)      It’s formulated with Vitamin C Ester and Alpha Lipoic Acid to help brighten my skin.

7)      There are no parabens in the formula.

8)      It protects against skin aggressors like dehydration, pollution, wind, cold, smoke, stress and chemical irritants.

9)      I can use one product to take care of my daytime moisturizing and sunscreen.

10)   It doesn’t interfere with foundation so no rolling or pilling.

There are a few things I’m not crazy about with Photo Plasma. This light pink moisturizer is a little tacky when you first apply it on so you’ll have to be sure you give yourself time to let it dry down before applying any foundation. Also because it’s in a glass jar you’ll need a separate applicator that you can clean in between uses. I keep a few plastic beauty spatulas near that I can quickly wash before and after use.

Photo Plasma

Photo Plasma

I’ve been happy though with the moisturizer and how my skin looks while using it. On my normal to dry winter skin it’s working well.

Now it’s your turn to see if Photo Plasma works for you. We were sent a jar for one of our US subscribers to win. Just use the easy Rafflecopter to enter. The giveaway is open through 3/28/14 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Remember that we check to make sure entries are valid. Good luck. — Marcia
