Planning a summer escape? Don’t forget the Hawaiian Tropic.

I spend my entire year trying to recapture the smell of summertime…and nothing smells like summer like Hawaiian Tropic does. Who else remembers this?

I wore my hair just like that, I used to be that thin, and I used Hawaiian Tropic Deep Tanning Oil with no SPF so I could get as tan as physically possible.

Plan your summer escape with Hawaiian Tropic!

Well, times have changed and we no longer look for suntan lotion with NO SPFs, just that fabulous coconutty scent. Hawaiian Tropic has so many options now that there is definitely something for everything. They sent me some sunscreen products to test and these are my personal favorites.

Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Lotion Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Lotion Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic ® Island Sport® Lotion Sunscreen is perfect for those who prefer suntan lotions. This is oil-free and non-greasy. It sinks in immediately and is sweat-resistant. In fact, it stays on through sweat and water and fiercely competitive volley ball games with your siblings for up to 80 minutes. Plus, it has UVA and UVB protection. Bring it on!!

Hawaiian Tropic® Island Sport® Clear Spray Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic® Island Sport® Clear Spray Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic® Island Sport® Clear Spray Sunscreen is the same formula but in a spray bottle. I love this spray – it has a very light mist and leaves skin feeling smooth, not all wet. Like the lotion, it has UVA and UVB protection and up to 80 minutes of water-resistant protection. It’s much easier to get this on the little ones too…you can chase them while spraying. So much easier to accomplish than with the lotion!

Hawaiian Tropic® Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance Clear Spray Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic® Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance Clear Spray Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic® Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance Clear Spray Sunscreen is a little fancier, a little more girly. This has a clear spray and a blend of guava, papaya and plumeria extracts. One spray of this sunscreen and skin is not only protected from the sun, it’s also super soft with a light sheen.

Hawaiian Tropic® Touch of Color Tinted Spray Lotion Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic® Touch of Color Tinted Spray Lotion Sunscreen

Hawaiian Tropic® Touch of Color Tinted Spray Lotion Sunscreen is, I have to admit, my favorite. I am sooo white now that I don’t actually bake myself in the sun anymore, and this not only protects and moisturizes my skin, it also give me an instant touch of color. This is a spray lotion and smells AMAZING!! Buttery coconut….all big umbrellas, cabana boys, and pina coladas. It’s exactly what I am looking for all year long!!

There is plenty of time left for great summer escapes. Just don’t forget your Hawaiian Tropic to make sure every escape is perfect!  – Lisa

Top Ten Sunscreens for 2015 – eyes, lips, body and face

Welcome to the 2015 version of favorite sunscreens. I’ve done both a Makeup Wars in 2013 on favorites and a Top Ten Tuesday in 2014. You’ll see some products that remain the same and some new ones. We can’t forget any part of our body and I didn’t want to forget children since I go through more sunscreen for them than I do for myself. — Marcia
1435625486_1115290AVEENO® Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50  A lot of Aveeno products have fragrance so when I am sent one that is fragrance free I’m over the moon. I find myself using this for my body all the time. It’s $10.99 but I often find coupons or specials for it. This has become a staple for both my husband and myself.
1435625420_serum_510x600SUPERGOOP CITY SERUM is the one I want for my face. I buy this every summer. This is fragrance free and gentle on my skin. It wears really well under foundation and provides anti-aging benefits and SPF 30.
1435625218_eyecream_510x600SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* is another product that was on last year’s list. This SPF 37 sunscreen is a great undereye protectant. The applicator makes it easy to apply and is cooling at the same time. Supergoop is really a top notch brand.
1435625098_murad-invisiblur-300x259MURAD INVISIBLUR PERFECTING SHIELD* isn’t a sunscreen per se but with SPF 30 it’s great under foundation. It gives a totally clear sunscreen protection while also blurring imperfections. There are many days I use this and not an additional SPF protect.
1435625029_algenist-tmALGENIST REPAIRING TINT RADIANCE MOISTURIZER with SPF 30* is one of the foundations that I’ve been using a lot lately. Recently a friend blogged about it and how it totally changed her skin so out it came again. I’d forgotten just how wonderful it was. It comes in 4 shades and I wear it in Light. I love getting amazing skincare benefits along with hiding my redness and sunspots.
1435624971_6062_lg_1LATHER BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 15 LIP BALM is what I discovered after I started using the Lather Tinted Lip Balms. I like the spearmint the best but it’s great to try the 3 pack with citrus, spearmint and unscented since I need lip balm in every purse or pocket.
1435624891_balmfamily_510x6001SUPERGOOP FUSION LIP BALM SPF 30 is the one I like when I’m at the pool or splashpad with my babies. Even though I try not to be in direct sunlight, they love it. This squeeze tube comes in 2 flavors (mint and acai) with mint being my fave.
1435624812_1115092 AVEENO® Baby Natural Protection Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50* is one of my main sunscreen for the kids. My granddaughter is 20 months old and she adores running around after her brother outside. I need sunscreen for them and this Aveeno is a pleasure to use. She doesn’t squirm when I apply it on her and it spreads easily. Bright sun or overcast days still need sunscreen and this is a great reasonably priced alternative.
1435624755_broad_spectrum_spf50_mineral_sunscreen_2015MUSTELA BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SPF 50 SUNSCREEN* is new to me and from the minute it arrived I knew it was perfect for my two little loves. This has both UVA and UVB protection in a mineral base and no fragrance.
1435624704_broad_spectrum_spf50_sun_stick.jpg.pagespeed.ce.dats3hfv_sMUSTELA BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SUNSCREEN STICK with SPF 50* is the one I let my grandson use. He loves rubbing the stick on himself and I finally have a way of applying sunscreen on him without a big struggle. Of course I sneak the Mustela lotion on the parts of his body he can’t reach. This is a win-win situation.

Algenist Repairing Tint & Radiance Moisturizer could be your new love

algenist tm

Even with all the skincare reviews we write, we can’t help but have a few favorites and Algenist fits into the favorites category. Algenist Repairing Tint & Radiance Moisturizer SPF 30

We love our double duty products at Beauty Info Zone and Algenist Repairing Tint & Radiance Moisturizer SPF 30 is definitely double duty if not a lot more. It contains moisturizers from Algenist along with SPF30 to protect you from the sun’s damage.

When I first tested this tinted moisturizer I was worried about the shade. It appears darker on my hand than I normally wear but once I applied it on my face, the magic began and it blended in perfectly. I use skincare under it (currently Algenist Genius White products but I’ve used others too) so it will smooth on more easily on my face.

The best way for me to apply this is with my fingers just like I would any moisturizer. I tried using tools and that sheered it out too much plus I felt like I was losing the wonderful skincare and sunscreen benefits that way. This is a great tinted moisturizer all year round but with summer on its way I like it even more. It gives me enough coverage to diminish the redness and dim the sunspots while at the same time blurring my skin imperfections. I still use a concealer under my eyes but that’s all I need to face the world.

Algenist Repairing Tint and Radiance Moisturizer
Anything that combines skin care science and cosmetic color is of interest to me, and Algenist Repairing Tint and Radiance Moisturizer doesn’t disappoint.
 .
In terms of skin care this elegant formula has microalgae ingredients that reduce the appearance of fine lines, refines texture, and improves elasticity.  The SPF 30 keeps skin safe from further damage by the sun.
.
In terms of color, it immediately covers imperfections and redness.  I like the coverage, although I do also need a concealer for under my eyes. Like Marcia, I find this works best applied with fingers. Body heat gives it a very natural look while also maintaining the color for coverage. Plus, the Medium shade is perfect for my sort of light, sort of medium skin tone. It’s a great way to multi-task, treating your skin while also getting instant gratification with an even skin tone.
.
This is available at QVC ($36), Sephora, Ulta, and Algenist’s website. At the time of this review Ulta has a gwp of deluxe sample of Genius White Brightening Anti-Aging Cream. Wherever you buy it you’ll be happy you did!

Makeup Wars Favorite New Product – my pick Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Makeup Wars has decided to feature a favorite new product. I actually have three but I’m narrowing it down to just one very special one: Murad Invisblur Perfecting Shield. This primer is everything to me and I’m thrilled to use it daily and choose this as my special feature. Mine came from Beauty Brands* which is a wonderful website that I discovered when a blogger mentioned a sale they were having. I love sales and specials and I find that Beauty Brands always has something going on. They carry lines that are both established like MURAD and independent ones.

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

My blog partner Lisa is all about primers and I’m all about serums but I’d heard so many wonderful things about Murad Invisblur Perfecting Shield that I just couldn’t wait to use it. Once I got it I realized it’s much more than a primer. It’s a moisturizer, sunscreen, anti-aging treatment and blurring product wrapped up into one fabulous product.

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

The texture of Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30/PA+++ is what makes this unique for me. It’s gel like and feels soothing on my skin. I find I need the smallest amount of it to cover my entire face. I can use this over a serum or without one, I can use this under moisturizer or use it as my moisturizing product. It’s designed to promote total skin perfection. It’s even wonderful for those days we are running around without foundation because it provides so many benefits as well as protective ingredients (see below).

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

One of the reasons I didn’t use primers that much previously is that I found too many of them balled up when I’d put on BB/CC Cream or foundation. There’s never a problem with that with Murad Invisiblur. Plus it makes my foundation last so much longer. Since I’ve been using this (just under 1 month) I don’t have to touch up foundation ever. I can put on my makeup in the morning and other than touching up blush, lips or eyeliner I’m done.

Invisiblur is gluten free and non-comedogenic. For me one of the main benefits is that it helps blur the large pores on my face. I work hard to keep those to a minimum and Invisiblur works hard to make them look like they aren’t there. There’s never a greasy feeling plus I don’t have to wait for it to set before applying anything else. murad invisiblur box backIf you want a touch of luxury that takes the place of at least 3 products in your morning routine, then Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30/PA+++ is the answer to your dreams, just like it is to mine. — Marcia

8 beauty items you need to toss now! Spring Clean Refresh with Meijer Beauty

*sponsored post*

Spring CleaningTime to toss! I am gearing up for some spring cleaning and first on my list is my vanity. Clearing out feels so good…I love it when things are organized and sparkling clean. Besides, extra space means room for new things!
Does your cosmetics stash look like this??

Does your cosmetics stash look like this??

Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets and pantries – it is so important to also tackle that beauty stash. Time goes by fast and before your know it you have beauty items that are years old. Anything you use with your hands or put on your face eventually gathers bacteria and can cause breakouts and other skin issues. Items with active ingredients become inactive over time, becoming an exercise in futility. Besides, it’s fun to go through and edit your cosmetics and skin care, plus what a great opportunity to go shopping to replenish!
If you are like me, the memory fades, so when you purchase a new item mark the date on the bottom of the jar with a black sharpie. It makes spring cleaning much easier. Also, most skin care items have an open jar symbol followed by a number and the letter ‘M’.  This tells you how many months you can use the product after opening it – so 6M means six months after opening, 9M means nine months after opening, etcetera. Don’t forget, when using products packaged in jars NEVER stick your fingers in the jar. Use a small cosmetics spatula to spoon out the product so you aren’t introducing bacteria into the jar.
Here are the top 8 items that you need to toss, along with some suggestions for replacements. Meijer just announced an exciting lineup of new beauty items, so it’s a great place to shop to renew that beauty routine and you can find all of my suggestions there.
L'Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Serum

L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Serum

1.  Serum:  I am sure this is no surprise. Typically serum is in air tight packaging, which keeps ingredient integrity, but once you start using a serum it’s only good for about six months. Toss it even earlier if the texture changes or it starts to smell weird. If you need to replenish, check out L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler.  It is wonderfully affordable and has hyaluronic acid to plump skin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation

2.  Foundation:  obviously, liquid foundation is a bacteria collector, especially jar-based foundation that is exposed to the air. But did you know that powder foundation also goes bad? Think about it…you dip your brush into the foundation, the brush goes on your skin, then you dip that brush back onto the foundation…all those skin oils are transferred into the powder, which means after a while it becomes pretty dirty. Toss that old stuff and try something new, like L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation.  This is opaque enough to use as foundation, and it also works great as a pressed powder to cancel out a shiny nose.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom

3.  Mascara:  this is a must-toss every season! After a while, mascara dries out and loses its lash lengthening and thickening power. Plus, any product that isn’t a solid is in danger of collecting bacteria. Glam out with your mascara and then replace it as soon as it shows any sign of dryness or starts to smell ‘off’, typically at about three months. By the way, resist ‘pumping’ your mascara – it makes it dry out even more quickly, and always toss your mascaras if you have an eye infection. Two mascaras to try for long, lush lashes are Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom.

L'Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer

L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer

4.  Moisturizer:  jar moisturizer lasts at the most 6 months. Go through all those open jars you know you have sitting on your shelves and toss anything you opened last fall. Not only do they become a potential hazard for your skin because of bacteria, but the active ingredients stop working so why bother? Try something new, like L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer to smooth out those lines and wrinkles.

Degree Dryspray Deodorant

Degree Dry Spray Deodorant

5.  Deodorant:  yes, deodorant does have a shelf life! While most have expiration dates, a good rule of thumb is two years. It’s a great idea to stock up on deodorant when it is on sale, but be sure to write your purchase date on the extras if they don’t have an expiration date. A great replacement is Degree Dry Spray. It sprays on dry and protects for up to 48 hours, so no worries on those hectic late mornings!

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen

6.  Sunscreen:  sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time and you sure don’t want to get a sunburn thanks to an outdated bottle. Most have an expiration date, but the longest any sunscreen will last is three years. My absolute favorite and a great one for restocking is Neutrogena Cooldry Sport.  I can even get my kids to put this on without a fight.

Cover Girl Lip Lava

Cover Girl Lip Lava

7.  Lip gloss:  a liquid product you apply to your lips?  Of course lip gloss is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to beauty items that go bad and need to be replaced regularly. Replace your old lip glosses with Cover Girl Lip Lava. I adore this lip gloss!  My favorite shade is Lava-Rider. I put it on then blot and I have a beautiful shimmery stain that lasts and lasts.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser

8.  Face cleanser:  these only last a year, so often a big bottle will expire before it’s gone. If your face cleanser isn’t working well, the consequences will definitely be evident to everyone! A great option for replacing your old stuff is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser. White tea and vitamin E ensure clean skin without any dryness.

Embrace spring cleaning and refresh that beauty stash! Be sure to go to Meijer Beauty to check out their new lineup of cosmetic and skin care items and restock for a beautiful YOU.  – Lisa

Speaking of handy, Japonesque Pro Makeup Artist Wipes ($12.50 for 20 wipes) are the absolute definition.  Stadiums and game stands can be grimy and dirty, and these wipes dissolve away dirt, not to mention makeup.  They are great for last-minute touch-ups, and even better for wiping away the day after game time is over.  The vitamin E helps to ensure your skin is all ready to be glammed up for the next game time.  You can find these at Ulta.

Dare to bare arms with Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen

kate somerville body-glow_carton_tubeHow many of you avoid tank tops because they show your arms?  I used to have such great arms…but a few months ago I caught a glimpse in the mirror while wearing a tank top and thought, are you kidding?  That can’t be me!!  I decided no more tank tops in public.  Just forget it.  Soon after, Kate Somerville sent her Body Glow Sunscreen ($45) and suddenly tank tops in public became possible again.

So everyone knows that sunscreen is a must, and this lightweight body lotion has stabilized avobenzone so it has all the broad spectrum protection I need.  This means it’s anti-aging, and it has some terrific antioxidant ingredients that fight free radicals and keep skin looking younger.  The really effective antioxidants include vitamin E, algae extract, and rosemary extract.  Body Glow Sunscreen also has caffeine for firming and improved texture with regular use.

The Body Glow Sunscreen has a beautifully smooth and light texture that soaks in quickly and doesn’t leave a heavy, tacky feel.  It still is a serious moisturizer, though, with mango and shea butter doing the heavy-duty dry skin repair.   The broad spectrum protection, antioxidants, lightweight texture and excellent moisturizing ability are enough to convince me…but it’s the light reflective pearls that truly sell me on this sunscreen moisturizer.  Body Glow Sunscreen gives skin a golden shimmery gleam that makes saggy, wrinkled, and unattractive and imperfect skin suddenly look fantastic.  The glow isn’t exactly natural, but it certainly isn’t overdone to disco ball proportions.

Glowing hands from my Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen

Glowing hands from my Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen

The only issues with Kate Somerville Body Glow Sunscreen are the fragrance, which is a very light floral that could be an issue for those with sensitivity, and the price which is on the expensive side.  But let me assure you, you get what you pay for with this first-rate sunscreen glowtion.

If you want to keep the right to bare arms (or legs or chest or whatever you dare to bare), I highly suggest picking up this nifty body lotion that protects the skin from the sun, fights free-radicals, moisturizes and adds a beautiful glow.  – Lisa
