Favorite setting products – powders and sprays

Do you have products that help you finish your makeup each day? That’s what Top Ten Tuesday is about this week. There are some great products available for this job and I’ve picked the favorites that I’ve used. When I’m done I hope you’ll share some of yours with me.

I have to start with IT COSMETICS since I talk about the brand all the time. The product that I’ve used up twice is IT COSMETICS BYE BYE PORES aka Bye Bye Pores Silk HD Anti-Aging Micro-Powder. Once I discovered this powder I stopped using the drawer full I had from Laura Mercier, Kevyn Aucoin, and more. I still use those occasionally but they aren’t in my top ten! Silky soft and it does blur my pores just like it says it will.

Once they came out with Bye Bye Pores Airbrush Silk Pressed Anti-Aging Finishing Powder I had to buy that too.  This pressed powder is great for travel and on the go.

Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish Powder is fabulous. I love this powder and am currently on my second one. Powder takes forever and a day for me to finish so the fact that I’ve gone through one and a half jars of this speaks for itself. Diamond Finish sets my makeup, blurs my pores, and gives me a beautiful finish that isn’t matte.

One more loose powder in this group: Pixi Beauty Quik Fix Powder in Translucid wins for the best packaging as well as being a great powder. This is very lightweight and invisible on my skin. It contains great ingredients like aloe vera and cucumber extract to smooth along with grape extract which acts as an antioxidant.

Mally Evercolor Poreless Face Defender is really a cheat since it’s not a powder or a spray but it’s a staple in my cosmetic wardrobe. It has a very unusual texture and gives a matte finish. It’s wonderful for blurring fine lines and pores. There’s no dryness like powder can give.

Now on to the sprays. Skindinavia has two sprays that I have to recommend: Makeup Primer Spray and the Makeup Finishing Spray are both wonderful. Other brands like Urban Decay sell these but they are made by Skindinavia. The Primer Spray is just like it sounds. Spray this one after your skincare is on and it helps deliver a smoother finish for your foundation. The Finishing Spray is to be applied after all your makeup is on and it helps keep your makeup in place for the day. It’s especially great for being outdoors. They even make this in Oil Control and a Bridal version.

A much less expensive version is  Hard Candy Fast & Fabulous Makeup Setting Spray at Walmart. This is only $6.30 compared to the $30ish prices of Skindinavia. It’s not bride proof but it’s a good way to see if a spray is for you.

When I was in the midst of hot flashes I relied on Youngblood Minerals in the Mist. I was at IMATS and I looked like someone had dropped a bucket of water on me. I was shopping at Youngblood and they recommended it in Refresh for me and it saved the trip. I carried it around with me to refresh my skin. I’ve since used it up but if I ever go through that misery again, I’d repurchase.

A few other bloggers have joined this week’s challenge. I’m interested in learning more. Are you? — Marcia

Purely Cosmetics and IT Cosmetics have some amazing powders

When pulling out powders for the latest edition of Top Ten Tuesday I found that everything I use is either from Purely Cosmetics or IT Cosmetics. I hadn’t thought about it before but all the other powders I have from Laura Mercier, Kevyn Aucoin, Scott Barnes, MAC Cosmetics, and more just sit waiting to be chosen. But when you find things you love, that’s what you use. These don’t add up to 10 but they are what gets used constantly and that’s more important than a number.
1432000173_makeup-wars-pores-powder-300x225PURELY COSMETICS DIAMOND PERFECT FINISH POWDER is my favorite finishing powder by far. I use this constantly. I finish nothing ever as far as cosmetics go but my current Diamond Powder is ready to say bye-bye but I will surely BUY BUY it again.I’ve been using this for years and plan on always using it. The packaging is ideal with a top that opens to get out the amount you desire plus you can close it up to prevent spilling. It costs $20 and will last you for years. No shimmer involved, just a soft diamond finish. *
1432001448_byebyepores_new2IT COSMETICS BYE BYE PORES SILK HD ANTI-AGING MICRO POWDER – I’m a huge IT Cosmetics fan obviously and this is my number 1 powder that they sell (and they have a lot of great powders). After I discovered IT Cosmetics this is the second product I bought from them (after Bye Bye Undereye) and I’ve rebought it several times. It keeps me shine free and gives me a more youthful appearance. It’s a Win-Win powder.
1431999940_goldpackagingPURELY COSMETICS SKIN SMOOTHING FOUNDATION and PURE MINERALS FOUNDATION – There are two formulas that are made by Purely Cosmetics. Both are wonderful and I recommend buying sample sizes of each. That way you can test the two products and check for your color.  Skin Smoothing Foundation is the newer of the two. It’s very hydrating because of the silk powder added to it. Plus it helps absorb oil, blur fine lines, nourish your skin (with jojoba) and reduce the look of your pores. It’s great for dry to slightly skin but not very oily skin. Pure Minerals Foundation is their original formula. It’s free of all chemicals and talc as is Skin Smoothing Foundation.  Pure Minerals Foundation is good for all skin types and especially so if you have acne or oily skin since nothing will clog your pores. And the nice thing is that you can add Silk Powder to it if you want. I have several shades in sample sizes which are perfect for finding that perfect match. *
1431999676_mac-blot-powderMAC BLOT POWDER used to always be in my Back2MAC pile since I used it exclusively for probably a dozen years. I always have one in my stash even though I don’t use it as often as I used to since discovering PC and IT. It’s the one MAC product I whole heartedly recommend when asked.
1431999578_it-hello-light-open-300x225IT COSMETICS HELLO LIGHT RADIANCE POWDER – A pressed powder that’s all sort of goodness. If you want that extra radiance to your complexion, this is the answer. As with all IT powders it’s finally milled and never looks powdery. It gives just a hint of glow but isn’t overpowering at all. I think this has been changed to the Illuminating Powder though. *
1431999502_it-cosmetics-new-year-collection13-1-290x300IT COSMETICS CELEBRATION FOUNDATION ILLUMINATION is actually one of two powder foundations from IT.  It’s hydrating, anti-aging, and gives just a subtle radiance. I prefer this to the original Celebration Foundation since it looks and feels more moisturizing.
1431999413_it-cosmetics-qvc-foundation-300x225IT COSMETICS CELEBRATION FOUNDATION is a more matte foundation with great coverage. It’s loaded with all the anti-aging ingredients that IT is known for. I wear this in Fair which is for the lightest skintones; it’s also available in Light, Medium, Rich and Tan. Mine is from a TSV (don’t miss their QVC specials!). *
1431999296_it-january-tsv-powder-compactIT FOUNDATIONS CC+ AIRBRUSH FOUNDATION is the newest powder foundation from IT. This too was part of a QVC TSV. It needs to be sold separately since it’s fabulous when used with their CC+ Cream.

Marsala Makeup Wars starring KBShimmer and Purely Cosmetics

KBShimmer Men are from Mars-ala and Purely Cosmetics Mauve Pearlescent Blush

KBShimmer Men are from Mars-ala and Purely Cosmetics Mauve Pearlescent Blush

Makeup Wars and Marsala – the words just flow together. If you are reading a beauty blog like Beauty Info Zone then you know that the word for 2015 is MARSALA. Pantone names a color of the year and for the last few years Sephora has teamed up with them to create a collection. This has brought the Color of the Year to the forefront for beauty.

There are so many different shades and different names that are used when describing Marsala. This is Pantone’s official swatch. I’ve seen Marsala described as deep burgundy;muted, red-toned dark mauve; reddish mauve; rich and creamy burgundy; neutral; cocoa; bordeaux; red-toned dark mauve; reddish mauve and everything else under the sun. Personally I see a reddish brown that can vary in intensity.

When KBShimmer offered Men Are From Mars-ala for review I was so excited. I love featuring independent companies and I loved the pictures I’d seen of Mars-ala. KBShimmer polishes are divine. I love the application and the wear.

Men are from Mars-ala ($8.75) is a very rich reddish brown with a linear holographic shimmer embedded within.

Before I applied this polish I was lukewarm about Marsala being the Color of the Year. I didn’t think it would flatter my skintone but KBShimmer proved me wrong. This polish was a joy to wear and lasted a full week and still looked like new. There was no pooling in my cuticles, no bubbling, just pure delight.

This will stay in my nail rotation way past the time the marsala craze is over. It’s a very universal shade and won’t be passe’ any time soon.

I show you this picture only because of the blush. Purely Cosmetics is one of my favorite indie companies (it was featured in a previous Makeup Wars as that too). Who’d have thought that a blush named Mauve would be a great Marsala shade?

Workout favorites with Makeup Wars

When Makeup Wars decided that they would do a post about workout favorites I was sort of stumped. I’m not a gym rat. As a matter of fact I scurry away from the gym. But since August I am in a gym at least 3 times a week though it’s for physical therapy. It’s the most workout I’ve gotten since writing those checks for my gym memberships that I never actually used.

At first I had nothing on my face other than sunscreen but now that I’m out and about I’m usually coming from somewhere or going somewhere so I do some makeup after all. This list is what I usually chose from when going to do my exercises.
*
LAVANILA HEALTHY DEODORANT in Lemon Vanilla – Lavanila’s deodorant comes in 7 different fragrances and two sizes. It’s a solid stick deodorant and never sticky. I find it gets me through my therapy sessions no matter how long they last and I still feel fresh as the day goes on. A full size is $14 (mini’s are $8) and I’ve barely made a dent in the months I’ve used it.
*
WAXELENE LIP TUBE is the product I’ve been using since the weather changed. There’s no color but I don’t usually want much color when I’m working out. This is a great protectant. I have a giveaway going on for a tube if you want to enter.
*
PIXI BEAUTY SHEA BUTTER LIP BALM comes in 5 sheer shades plus clear. If I want just that touch of color then I like to wear it in Natural Rose. I get the comforting lip balm with Vitamin E and color in one little tube.
*
IT COSMETICS CC CREAM is one of several CC Creams that I reach for. I also like Pur Minerals CC Cream and the pick of 2014 CoverFX. I’m on my second tube of the one from IT Cosmetics and I’ve completely transformed my sister into being a fan of this CC Cream and the brand. This gives me plenty of coverage, SPF50, anti-aging benefits and hydration. Plus when I’m done working out my skin isn’t dripping color.
*
PURELY COSMETICS DIAMOND PERFECT FINISH POWDER is what I use to set the CC Cream. This silky soft powder gets raves from me every day. It works wonders setting any foundation or CC/BB Cream and it makes my skin look finished. I rave about this all the time and I’m doing it again!
*
MAYBELLINE COLOR TATTOO – I have several shades of Color Tattoo eyeshadows though I tend to wear the base shades like Nude Compliment or Barely Beige on workout days. These wear like iron on me so they are perfect for any time I want color that isn’t going to budge.
*
MAKEUP GEEK GEL EYELINER is one of my favorite brands of gel eyeliner. I think a gel is perfect for the days you want to wear some makeup yet need your exercise. They never budge on the top lashline though sometimes they’ll wear off a little on the bottom lashline. Makeup Geek makes this in 8 shades, I wear Mobster (brown) all the time.
*
EDDIE FUNKHOUSER QUATRO VARIABLE LASH MASCARA is my OMG mascara. I am in love with this mascara and always have one open. I usually buy mine from Dermstore. This dark black mascara has an innovative tube that allows you to go from “nice lashes” to “va va voom”. Eddie always notices when I’m wearing it.
*
MILANI TOTAL LASH COVER MASCARA is my favorite mascara that I can pick up at the drugstore. It sells out quickly so when I see it I’ll usually pick one up just in case. It’s not va va voom like Eddie’s is but it doesn’t smudge and gives me well defined eyelashes.
*
PERRICONE MD NO BLUSH BLUSH was supposed to be reviewed way back in the summer. My best makeup friend raved about this line so much that I had to buy it and see what the fuss was about. Since then I’ve used it constantly. I prefer this liquid blush on the days I’m going to be getting ‘moist’ because it’s more like a stain. It doesn’t ever wipe off. It stays where it belongs. It will fade during the day so I sometimes have to refresh it but in general it lasts really well.
*
PIXI BEAUTY SHEER CHEEK GEL makes me look like I already have that workout glow before I even get in the gym. I have it in Rosy which was on one of my wishlists a long time ago. I love the stain and I love the ease of it. It’s easy to pop into my bag in case I feel the need to touch up but I rarely have to.
*
Considering that this is all new to me, this post made me realize what has become important on the days I want to remain fresh and need to do my therapy. I’m sure my fellow Makeup War warriors have some great suggestions including what clothes to wear and I can’t wait to read them. What would you recommend that I add to this list? — Marcia

Makeup Wars – Pore Relief

This week Makeup Wars has decided to focus on Skin Savers. This could be products for anything from wrinkles, blemishes, dark circles to my choice pore helpers. Even though skincare isn’t always exciting, it will be so interesting to see what the other bloggers have focused on. I can’t wait to read their posts and find ways to save my skin!

Makeup Wars - Pore Relief

Makeup Wars – Pore Relief

One of my problems is the size of my pores. Luckily no one walks around with magnifying glasses or I’d be shunned in society. As a teen I had way too many blackheads. Besides being shy as could be, I felt like this was the bane of my existence. As an adult I realize I’m lucky I had skin that oily back then because it’s kept me younger looking. But the end result is pores galore. My solution is to use products that make them look smaller and to exfoliate my skin a few times a week to keep my pores cleaner. I’ve chosen 5 of the products that I’m using to blur away this imperfection. I forgot about exfoliators so that will just have to be another time.

Kiehl's Micro-Blur Skin Perfector

Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Skin Perfector

KIEHL’S MICRO-BLUR SKIN PERFECTOR* – This is my newest product and I’m not ready to write a full review of it. At first I thought it was only a topical skin smoother but once I started reading about it I realized that this actually a treatment too. I haven’t used it long enough to see how it works over time but I’m enjoying this as my last step before applying foundation. It’s doing a good job in blurring my pores.

Mally Poreless Pore Defender (old packaging)

Mally Poreless Pore Defender (old packaging)

MALLY EVERCOLOR PORELESS FACE DEFENDER – I’ve mentioned this many times since it’s one of my most used products ever. I’m on my third one and that’s almost gone. I first received it in a QVC kit I bought and before it was gone, I purchased another. I use this over all my face makeup to help look as poreless as possible. The sponge it comes with is wonderful, just be careful not to use too much.

Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish

Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish

PURELY COSMETICS DIAMOND PERFECT FINISH * – I use either the Mally Face Defender or Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish powder every day without fail. Not only does this very finely milled powder set my makeup for an entire day, it also helps blur imperfections. I’m in love with this powder as well as the Pre-Fixx Face Primer I talked about in my indie company review.

Miracle Skin Transformer Vanish

Miracle Skin Transformer Vanish

MIRACLE SKIN TRANSFORMER VANISH* – MST makes many great products and I love discovering them all but I think my favorite is VANISH. I didn’t realize how great this was when I first reviewed it over a year ago, but the more I use it the more I realize just how much I like it. It combines a serum with a primer to produce a gel that helps vanish fine lines and pores. In my original review I mention all the long term benefits. I’m ready for the illusion of porcelain skin with Vanish.

Youngblood Anti-Shine Mattifier

Youngblood Anti-Shine Mattifier

YOUNGBLOOD ANTI-SHINE MATTIFIER – I bought this at IMATS just before it became available to the public because I was so excited to find that one of my favorite companies had come out with a product to not only keep me shine free but also to make those pesky pores look smaller. I apply this before foundation so even though it seems similar to the Mally, it’s placement is better for me during makeup application rather than after. The packaging is great since the sponge is housed under the mattifier so it’s better for travel or taking with.

Rather than my going on for miles of more products tell me which of these you’ve used and any others that you’d recommend. Then join the other bloggers to see what Skin Savers they recommend. — Marcia

Makeup Wars goes Indie – featuring Whip Hand Cosmetics, Purely Cosmetics and Susan Thompson

Beautysets - Makeup Wars Indie Favorites by Beauty Info Zone
This week’s edition of Makeup Wars is exciting to me. I’ve been wanting to showcase these items for a long time and now I finally get to do so. I’ve chosen three companies that are only purchased online and aren’t that well known – but they should be. I hope you enjoy learning about some brands that are new to you or maybe just hiding in the back corner of your head.

Top Indie Brands: Purely Cosmetics, Whip Hand Cosmetics, Susan Thompson Cosmetics

Top Indie Products: Purely Cosmetics, Whip Hand Cosmetics, Susan Thompson Cosmetics

WHIP HAND COSMETICS – This is a Made in Detroit company that has the energy of the autos that Detroit is known for. The people who run Whip Hand Cosmetics are go getters. They have amazing products and want the world to know about them. I totally agree. I’ve yet to be disappointed in a product I’ve bought from them.

Whip Hand Cosmetics

Whip Hand Cosmetics

1) SET THE STAGE PRIMER is their premier product. They’ve built their reputation with this and makeup artists like Kevin James Bennett adore this as do I. I received a small sample of this when I went to the grand opening event and have loved this since then. I’m savoring every bit of it. Any time I’ve ordered my eyes go to “color” but the next time I need to buy a full size primer. Luckily a little goes a long way to prime my face and make foundation last longer.

Whip Hand Set the Stage Primer

Whip Hand Set the Stage Primer

2) WHIP HAND PIGMENTS – I can’t begin to tell you how many fabulous colors they have in pigments. I’ve bought a slew of them plus joined Beauty Army’s subscription club just because they had a special collection made for them by Whip Hand. These are great for me because I don’t wear glitter well and I can find so many pigments from Whip Hand that aren’t glittery.

Whip Hand Cosmetics Pure Pigment loose eyeshadow

I also have Lip Products like the terrific Lip Palettes, a LIP HIT™ Long Wear Lip Veneer in a light pink and a loose pigment blush. All are hits with me.

Purely Cosmetics products

Purely Cosmetics products

PURELY COSMETICS is the next indie brand that I love and want to share with you. The owner, Robyn, is as nice and helpful as can be. Purely Cosmetics is a mineral makeup brand that has the most heavenly powders as well as eyeshadows, blush and a brand new face primer.

Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish Powder

Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish Powder

1) DIAMOND PERFECT FINISH POWDER is perfect just as the name implies. I’ve been using it for two years and loving it. First I love the packaging. It has a sliding top and I keep it so that I have exactly 3 holes open. I then shake it into the top of the jar, pick it up with a kabuki and buff it in. I use so little and get such great results. There’s no shimmer, just a softness to blur my imperfections. A full size for $20 is going to last forever but you can also buy Purely Cosmetics products in sample sizes which is a great feature of the site.

Purely Cosmetics Pre Fixx Face Primer

Purely Cosmetics Pre Fixx Face Primer

2) Pre Fixx Face Primer is a new product from Purely Cosmetics. Robyn kindly sent me a sample to try and it’s a great product which I’ll review in full next month. You need just the smallest amount and the good news is that it contains hyaluronic acid. It is a silicone primer and that might not be everyone’s cup of tea but my skin loves it.

Purely Cosmetics Mineral foundations

Purely Cosmetics Mineral foundations

3) Mineral Foundations in Pure Mineral or Skin Smoothing formulas are great. This is the product to buy in sample sizes so you can try both formulas and also a variety of shades to know which is best for your skin. I reviewed these in 2011 and the price is still the same.

Susan Thompson Cheeky Liquid Blush in Mims the Word

Susan Thompson Cheeky Liquid Blush in Mims the Word

Susan Thompson Cheeky Liquid Blush in Mims the Word

Susan Thompson Cheeky Liquid Blush in Mims the Word

SUSAN THOMPSON COSMETICS is the creation of Susan Thompson, a professional makeup artist from L.A. I learned about the line from Lola’s Secret Blog and hers is the  blog  you need to look at to see the beautiful products from Susan Thompson. The only product I’ve bought from the brand is the beautiful Cheeky Liquid Blush in Mims the Word.

I’ve purchased liquid blush from other brands and they’ve sat neglected but when Lola loved these beyond words I knew I would too. Mims the Word is extremely pigmented and I just need a little. The best thing for me is to put a drop on a steel palette or my Makeup Mate and then pick up just a tiny bit. I can build it if I want. It dries quickly so I work fast. If it starts to wear off at the end of the day I’ll top it with a powder blush and be good for hours. This is a beautiful very cool toned blush but Susan Thompson has 6 to choose from.

Thanks for coming to this new Makeup Wars. I’m thrilled with these 3 brands and hope you’ve found some that could become favorites too. Please read the other blogs to find out about more fabulous Indie companies. — Marcia

*disclosure: Purely Cosmetics was sent for review, Whip Hand sent lip palettes and the sample primer but the other items were purchased, Susan Thompson was a personal purchase

A match made in heaven – Minerals Mate and Purely Cosmetics

Spring is the perfect time to start using something new or to bring out some old favorites. My skin is no longer screaming for moisture nor is it so hot that it makes my skin feel super oily in my T-Zone. This is when mineral makeup works out perfectly for me. The mineral makeup that’s been gracing my face of late is by Purely Cosmetics. I’ve previously reviewed the wonderful Diamond Perfect Finish Powder and now I get to share my experience with more products from Purely Cosmetics.

I have a sample package of foundations from Purely Cosmetics ($12). The shades I have are Neutral Light, Calif Blonde and Peaches n Cream. In the sample package you can pick any 3 of the foundations, primers or finishing powders. A great deal and a great way to test out these products. It’s also wonderful because if you change foundation shades in the summer you can buy some darker shades to mix in with your foundation.

I also have the world’s best accessory for mineral foundation: Minerals Mate. This is new on the Purely Cosmetics site or you can find it on their Minerals Mate site. What a treat this is to have. It makes the application process so easy. This $10 tool helps you mix mineral shades; helps with keeping your minerals sanitary and helps if you want to foil mineral eyeshadows. As you can see by the picture, Minerals Mate has 3 larger wells and 4 smaller ones plus a small well for adding water or a mixing solution. It cleans up very easily with soap and water.

I’ve been experimenting with the three shades of foundation that I have from Purely Cosmetics to see if I can find an absolutely perfect shade. Actually Neutral Light is pretty close to perfect for me but I enjoy mixing in a little bit of one of the others to liven up my pale face. The Minerals Mate makes that so easy.

Here’s my routine – I put a little of the Silk & Pearl Powder Primer in the first large well, the second one holds the foundation or mix of foundation, and the third is for the gorgeous blush I’ve been using. I’ve also been using their adorable Flat Top Baby Buki for the job. I really am enjoying this even though I have other kabuki brushes. But this brush fits perfectly into the larger wells and it’s stiff enough for me to buff the foundation into it without destroying the brush. Plus it’s a great size for my face.

Silk & Pearl Powder Primer is made of a combination of silk and pearl powders. It helps with hiding my pores while at the same time absorbing the oils I can get around my nose. It comes in 2 formulas: Normal – Dry Skin and Normal – Oily Skin. I chose Normal – Oily knowing that my skin would start being oilier as the weather got warmer. The weather here changes from day to day and the primer has helped in all these conditions.

Purely Minerals has two foundation formulas; their original Pure Mineral Foundation and their newer Skin Smoothing Foundation. I’m particularly enjoying the Skin Smoothing which is best suited for dry to slightly oily skin and is not recommended for very oily skin. (Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Zinc Oxide, Pure Silk Powder, Boron, Silica, Iron Oxides, Jojoba Oil (vegetable derived), Magnesium Mystriate. May contain ultramarine blue, zinc stearate (plant derived).) The Pure Mineral Foundation is great for people with oily skin and who are acne prone. There’s nothing to clog pores. Look at the simple ingredient list: Ingredients: Mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, ultramarine blue, zinc oxide. This formula is best suited for normal to oily skin types, and for those with very sensitive skin. Both of these foundations go on smoothly and are long lasting without looking powdery.

(This is a mix of Natural Light with a little Peaches n Cream mixed in. My face has that same combination but I’m also wearing the Silk & Pearl Powder Primer.)

Last and my current favorite is the Pearlescent Blush in Blushing. I love this color. It’s so sweet and gentle. It’s definitely a pearlescent look without any shimmer to it at all. Shimmer blushes magnify my pores but Blushing just makes my cheeks look like they glow. There are 8 shades in this category from the sweet Blushing to bronzer shades.

If I haven’t convinced you that this is a brand of mineral makeup that you need to try then maybe Purely Cosmetics can on this page. They aren’t afraid to compare themselves to the other brands available since they trust their formulas and know that you are going to be as happy with them as Beauty Info Zone is.

My match made in heaven – Purely Cosmetics with the amazing Minerals Mate palette. This is the way to go! — Marcia
