Great things in small packages: MIYU Beauty Merry Mini Ornament

MIYU Mini

There is something about drinking tea that feels special. It seems more indulgent, more refined than coffee, probably because tea sets are delicate and the intricate ceremonies for drinking tea are fascinating. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great cuppa joe. But tea…every time I drink it I feel pampered. So I was intrigued with MIYU Beauty, a Canadian line that launched in 2013. This line is based on beauty from the inside out, pairing artisanal teas with skin care products. Lifestyle, not skin type, is the determining factor when choosing products. MIYU is meant to give yourself some ‘mi’ time.

MIYU Mini Hydrate Mi

MIYU sent us one of their special holiday sets to try, and it was a great introduction to this beauty line with such an intriguing concept.

The Merry Mini Ornament with the Hydrate Mi Mini pairing ($15, the retail value is $20) is a large acrylic ornament that houses a 30 ml Hydrate Mi Beauty Essence and 2 sachets of Hydrate Mi Beauty Tea.

Inside the ornament - Hydrate Mi Beauty Essence and 2 Hydrate Mi Beauty Tea Sachets

Inside the ornament – Hydrate Mi Beauty Essence and 2 Hydrate Mi Beauty Tea Sachets

The Hydrate Mi Essence is a spray mist serum. Shake the bottle first, spray on and pat into skin.  As a spray it is extremely hygienic, and the opaque bottle ensures the efficacy of the Asian botanicals inside. It works as a primer for moisturizer, as well as a primer for makeup, too. I am impressed with how hydrating it is and it really smooths skin, creating an optimal canvas for makeup application.

The Hydrate Mi Beauty Tea is the matching tea blend for the Hydrate Mi Essence. It makes an elegant, citrusy tea that smells as delicious as it tastes. I couldn’t put my finger on which fruit it tastes like, which turns out to be the snow pear – I’ve never tasted a snow pear so no wonder I was having trouble! I used the steaming tea as a quick pore treatment just for kicks and saved the two tea sachets afterwards. I put them in the fridge and then used them as a de-puffing eye treatment later!

Full sizes of both the Hydrate Mi Essence and the Hydrate Mi Beauty Tea are available online, along with De-stress versions. Tea lovers will really enjoy the unique Merry Mini Mi pairings.  MIYU Beauty is an elegant, interesting niche line that is worth checking out!  – Lisa

Lisa’s new and improved top ten primers list

I wrote my original ‘Top ten primers‘ post back in 2010, a few years after my primer obsession began. Finding an excellent primer was life-altering for me because for the very first time my makeup actually lasted all day.  I’ve always had strange skin, products don’t last long on me at all – I put blush on and an hour later, it’s completely gone.  For a long time I thought there was nothing I could do about it – until I found a primer that actually made my makeup (and most happily my blush) last a whole day.  I think I bought every primer on the market for the next few years after that. I have owned and used so many different primers I am ashamed to put a number on it.

Lisas top ten primersThis list is a long overdue update of my personal choices for the top ten primers – each one is unique, they all have their advantages, and they are all excellent.  Which primer I choose is determined by the condition of my skin that day, my skin tone, and the foundation I am going to use. (A side note – I was astounded by the price increases when I updated them!)

My top ten list is not in any particular order – these are my top favorites, but they are all equal in terms of play time they get.

Kevyn Aucoin The Primed Skin Developer

Kevyn Aucoin The Primed Skin Developer

1.  Kevyn Aucoin The Primed Skin Developer ($68)

The earlier version, called The Sensual Skin Primer, was actually the primer that began my obsession.  I used it one day and could not believe how vibrant and fresh my makeup was 10 hours later. The new version is even better – I use the Normal to Oily one.  The texture has slip but it doesn’t feel extremely silicone heavy.  It dries quickly to a satin finish.  It keeps makeup on like no other.  There are some drawbacks, though – it is an expensive item, so expensive that it hurts to buy it.  I tend to use this on special occasions only to try to make it last as long as possible.  And while I love the hygienic pump bottle, it drives me crazy that I never know how much I have left.  Regardless, I will never be without a bottle – and a back up.

Grand Central Beauty Skin Perfecting Primer

2.  Grand Central Beauty S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting SERUM+PRIMER ($68)

I like to say that the only time I have ever been wrong was that one time I thought I made a mistake.  Unfortunately, in reality I have been wrong on a few more occasions than that…and I was completely wrong about the S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting SERUM+PRIMER.  While it has a slew of cool ingredients, including squalane from brazilian sugar cane, apple, watermelon, lentil, rice and soybean protein, I initially thought it worked better as a serum than a primer…totally incorrect.  This is a kick ass primer.  It keeps makeup looking totally perfect for 12 hours.  Every time I use it I think, “How could I have been so wrong??”

Reviva Labs Makeup Primer

Reviva Labs Makeup Primer

3.  Reviva Labs Makeup Primer ($19.50) This is absolutely one of my favorite primers of all time.  It has silicone, but it isn’t super thick.  I find that it works best if I apply the primer and then let it sit for about three minutes.  It has a slightly wet texture at first that will collide with your concealer and foundation application. If you wait a few minutes it dries down to a beautiful finish that helps concealer and foundation apply and wear perfectly.  It does everything a primer should do:  makes skin super smooth, allows even application of concealer and foundation, and increases longevity.

Pur Minerals green_primer

4.  Pur Minerals Colour Correcting Foundation Primer in Green ($31):

This is the primer I reach for when I’m broken out.  The green color balances out redness from acne, broken capillaries, and rosacea.  It doesn’t make me look like an alien – the green transforms into a beautiful, even skin tone color.  Less is more with this primer. You don’t need much to neutralize redness and create a perfect canvas for foundation.

OCC Skin Primer

5.  OCC Skin Primer ($27.50):This is a really cool primer.  Not only is it great for the face, but you can also use it as a lid primer for mineral eyeshadows.  It’s unlike most primers.  You HAVE to shake the bottle before squeezing some out – and then be careful when you do, because it has a thin, liquid consistency.  Once applied, wait until it dries because it applies quite wet, but does dry down to a super smooth, satiny finish.  And boy does makeup stick to this stuff!

Paul and Joe Protecting Foundation Primer

6.  Paul and Joe Protective Foundation Primer ($32)

This is, by far, the strangest primer I have ever used.  And I love it.  It has an SPF of 30.  It’s also super watery – it must be properly shaken before squeezing the product out.   It has a very thin consistency that dries down to a satiny finish.  It also has super fine, really tiny microshimmers in it, which gives skin the best natural looking glow.  The primer looks really yellow, but it goes on colorless – aside from the glow.  Makeup lasts and lasts with this primer.  I find that I reach for it when I am using very matte, oil-inhibiting foundations like Clarins Truly Matte Foundation because the microshimmers counteract the flatness.

Cle de Peau Correcting Cream Veil

7.  Cle de Peau Correcting Cream Veil ($76)

I have a love-hate relationship with Cle de Peau.  Some products I adore and will buy despite the exorbitant price tag.  Other products I can’t stand, and I get offended at the price of items that do absolutely nothing for you.  This primer, however, is well worth the price.  At the same time, I get the sample sizes at the counter when I can…they are great for travel and give several weeks of use. This primer is a thick, creamy lotion.  You don’t need a lot of it – a little goes a very long way.  In fact, if you use too much you will get a distinctly white cast to your skin.  Use the right amount and it sinks into your skin nicely, leaving no white or greyish cast.  Skin is super smooth, lines are filled in, and makeup goes on beautifully and lasts all day.  Pores look smaller and it lessens oil production throughout the day.  Get a sample at the counter before investing, but I’ll bet once you try it, you’ll want the full size version.  I love this under cream foundation.

IT Cosmetics Feel the Moment Primer

8.  IT Cosmetics Feel the Moment Anti-Aging Primer Serum ($38)

The Feel the Moment Anti-Aging Primer Serum is a thick, super hydrating primer that makes skin baby smooth.  Ingredients include caviar extract, hydrolyzed collagen, peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A, E, and C, argan and jojoba oils, and avocado.  The serum is in glass jar with a dropper,  and two drops is more than enough to prime and hydrate.  It goes on slightly tacky then dries down to create a perfect canvas for makeup. This is just what I need for perfect makeup when I have dry skin.  I have gone through two bottles of this and am halfway through my third!

Algenist Pore Corrector Anti Aging Primer

9.  Algenist Pore Corrector Anti-Aging Primer ($42)

This primer comes in an opaque airless pump which keeps the product integrity and effectiveness safe and sound.  It does everything a great primer should do – it reduces the look of pores, creates a satin finish for easy makeup application, and it keeps that makeup in place and reduces fading throughout the day.

Ingredients include Alguronic Acid, which ramps up the anti-aging quotient. I am thrilled that over time it actually improves my skin – but I am even more thrilled with the immediate results of perfectly primed skin. And, of course, not looking like a sad clown with melted makeup at the end of the day is a huge plus!! The Pore Corrector Anti-Aging Primer has a beautifully lightweight texture that doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. While liquidy, it dries quickly and truly makes that beautiful canvas you need to happily play with all the rest of your cosmetics art supplies.

Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy

10.  Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy ($7)  So this is a bit of a cheat…it’s not a face primer, but it is such a fantastic eye primer I had to put it on the list.  If you like pigment eyeshadows, you need this.  If you have oily lids, you need this.  Heck, it’s only seven bucks…try it out!  A tiny dab makes eyeshadow not only cling to your lids for dear life, it also brings out a vibrancy you never knew the eyeshadow had in the first place.  I think of my Pixie Epoxy as liquid gold.

The biggest difference I notice between my original list from five years ago and the one I have now (beside the price increases!) is the addition of primer/serums.  Primers don’t just prime anymore, they also treat the skin.  Most people probably only need or want one, maybe two different primers.  I happen to be just a *little* obsessive about makeup, so my collection is extreme – but if you are looking for a primer, I am sure you can find something perfect for your needs on this list.

Ok ladies, what is your favorite primer?  Is there another amazing primer out there that I just have to try??  There’s always room for one more!  – Lisa

Tarte Cosmetics Fall 2014 Collection review and swatches part one

Sultry, but subtle.  Essentials for day that can take you into night.  Tarte Cosmetics has a beautiful new LE collection for fall, and today I have reviews and swatches of the primers and concealers they sent us.  I previously reviewed the stunning Rainforest After Dark Palette HERE, be sure to check it out.  Tomorrow I will review five more products from the awesome Fall 2014 collection.

First up – primers.

1.  clean slate timeless smoothing primer ($39)  This is part of the new collection, although thankfully it’s a permanent product.  The clean slate timeless smoothing primer is a thick and creamy silicone-based primer that comes in a glass jar.  It leaves skin super smooth, filling in all those wrinkles and smoothing pores for flawless makeup application.  It keeps makeup vibrant and fresh and is an excellent choice for people who like silicone-based primers.

2.  colored clay cc eye primer stick ($21)  This is a color correcting eye primer that brightens the eyelid, primes it for eyeshadow application, and keeps eyeshadow from fading and creasing.  I have oily lids and this takes care of that issue stat.  I also like it as a base color all by itself.  My eyelids have an uneven color and some redness, and this primer stick does a great job of evening and creating a neutral base.  Another plus – it doesn’t need sharpening, just twist up from the bottom for more product.

The Fall 2014 collection features one color corrector and one concealer:

1.  colored clay cc undereye corrector ($24) is a CC cream that color corrects and brightens the under eye area.  It comes in two shades:  light-medium and medium-tan.  The shade I have swatched is light-medium.  This creamy color corrector has a tiny bit of shimmer that reflects light and camouflages darkness under the eyes.  It is a color corrector, not a concealer, so using this under concealer really helps to brighten and make eyes look younger.  Definitely PAT this under the eye for the best effect – rubbing or even buffing it with a brush will diminish the effect.  Follow your patting with tarte maracuja creaseless concealer and it takes years off your look.

Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Waterproof Concealer

2.  maracuja creaseless concealer ($22) is one of the best concealers ever.  It is a very thick, creamy concealer that covers like crazy.  You don’t need much, a small amount gives creaseless coverage that lasts all day long.  If you have dark circles, you want this concealer.  It is a must-have.

Stayed tuned for the rest of the collection tomorrow, including the best in faux lash extending fibers, colored clay tinted brow gel, lipsurgence lip gloss in Envy, Amazonian clay dual liner duo gel liner, and the be charmed limited-edition picture perfect eyelash curler.  – Lisa

Korres Greek Yoghurt Primer Review

Primers are awesome for ensuring a smooth, even application of makeup.  If you have issues with makeup fading after a few hours, primer can be the perfect solution.  But for many, silicones aren’t tolerable…and most primers are full of them.  Korres recently sent us their silicone-free option, Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer ($30), to test.  Can a primer without silicones do the job?

Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer

Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer

First, let’s talk about packaging.  The box is very attractive and chic with a geometric blue and black floral pattern.  The tube is pretty cool too – it reminds me of a tube of toothpaste.  I don’t know, maybe it’s just so different it appeals to me, but I get a kick out of using this primer every time simply because of the packaging.

Love the cool tube packaging - Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer

Love the cool tube packaging – Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer

Yogurt is the main ingredient mentioned, but while yogurt is a healthy food option I can’t find any studies that specifically say it’s a great topical skin care ingredient.  However, there are plenty of other skin-friendly ingredients in this primer that smooth and nourish skin – all without silicones, parabens, or sulfates.

Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer

Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer

Korres Greek Yoghurt Nourishing Primer is a white gel that resembles a light moisturizer.  Unlike silicone-based primers that sit on top of the skin this one sinks in, and it does have a scent that smells like yogurt (go figure).

Korres reports that 94% of women they surveyed felt that after using this primer their skin was more hydrated and healthier-looking, and 94% of women saw visible improvements in skin texture and smoothness.  I think this primer is a good choice for combo to oily skin because it doesn’t clog pores.  It’s probably not moisturizing enough for very dry skin.  I find that in terms of preventing my makeup from fading, I get the best results when I apply it after moisturizing and then let it sink in for about 5 minutes before applying foundation.

Overall, this is a very good option for anyone who wants a non-silicone based primer.  It certainly smooths skin and keeps makeup from fading, and the yogurt makes me feel like I am doing something healthy even when I eat nothing but fast food and chocolate all day!

You can find Korres online and at Sephora stores.  – Lisa

GrandCentralBeauty serves up some S.M.A.R.T. skin care

Most ‘grand centrals’ around the world are examples of classic architecture and modern efficiency. The New York skin care line GrandCentralBeauty is based on those concepts. In fact, their motto is “Classic Treatment, Modern Results.” They have three products that are meant to be layered for skin perfection. GrandCentralBeauty sent us their Express Facial Kit ($32, a $40 value) which is a great way to try out the line.

This cute wristband comes with the Express Kit

This cute wristband comes with the Express Facial Kit

All of GrandCentralBeauty’s products are S.M.A.R.T.  So what does S.M.A.R.T. stand for? Smooths, Moisturizes, Anti-aging, Redness-reduction, Tones. All products are meant to compliment whatever routine you are currently using, which is definitely smart in my opinion.

The Express Facial Kit includes a deluxe S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting MASK, a deluxe S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting POLISHER, and a deluxe S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting SERUM+PRIMER, all packaged in a cute pink travel tote.

GrandCentralBeauty Active Mask Powder (held together with the wrist band!)

the mask

the mask and booster

The S.M.A.R.T. SKIN PERFECTING® MASK is a powder mask that is mixed with the accompanying liquid Intensive Booster.  I love powder masks because they keep a whole lot longer than masks that are already liquid. One jar of powder makes a single very thick mask that ultimately peels off and looks like a Halloween mask.

the mask

the powder mask – mix it up right in this container

The mask does all the S.M.A.R.T. things, plus it brightens skin and reduces oiliness. It really is a whole lot of fun to use, too. The powder is pre-measured, and the mask is left on for fifteen minutes. It cleans out pores like crazy – you just might faint when you see all the gunk in the mask that used to be on and in your face.

the polisher and serum

the Perfecting Polisher and Perfecting Serum

The S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting SERUM+PRIMER has a slew of cool ingredients, including squalane from brazilian sugar cane, apple, watermelon, lentil, rice and soybean protein. I think it works better as a serum than a primer – I need a little more spackle than this provides – but if you prefer a lighter primer this is a great option.

full size Skin Perfecting Polisher

The S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting POLISHER is a seriously cool product. It’s a 30-Second Multi-Tasking Toning Peel. Looks like a serum, doesn’t it? But it is a peel with ingredients like multi-fruit acids including apple, lemon, sugarcane and orange, botanical extracts like peony, and caviar-like beads that exfoliate and polish.

This is applied to a clean, dry face, then massaged until these little spongy beads show up (about 30 seconds or so). Those beads are actually dirt and dead skin cells…ewwww…but fascinating! Just buff them off into the sink, and no need to even rinse. Do this before the mask and follow with the serum and it’s a complete pampering facial.

Of the three products, the Skin Polisher and Perfecting Mask are the standouts. If you are interested in GrandCentralBeauty, the Express Facial is a great way to try everything and see what works best for your skin.  In fact, I would say that it is a S.M.A.R.T. buy!  – Lisa

Prime and line with Tarina Tarantino

Tarina Tarantino, the funky cool designer and makeup artist, makes some of my favorite cosmetic products. I almost cried when she left Sephora…but thank goodness she can still be found at local boutiques and via her website. Tarina recently sent some items to test and I am excited to tell you about her Pearl Glow Primer ($32) and Eye Dream Hyperliner Eye Liner ($15).

As always, TT has adorable packaging

I always love Tarina’s packaging – just like her beautiful jewelry, the glass bottle is extremely attractive with fabulous details.

The Pearl Glow Primer comes in two shades, Nude and Pearl.  I tested the Pearl shade. It is an off-white with pink and purple iridescence that sheers out a super pretty soft glow.

This is both a primer and a highlighter thanks to light reflective pigments. I wear it over or under foundation. It is oddly lumpy at first, but smooths out and gives a great luminosity to skin. I also love that is has no silicones.

For eyelining, there aren’t many eye pencils that are as good as the Eye Dream Hyperliner.

The Eye Dream Hyperliner works great with my oily lids. It has a fabulous gel-like texture and goes on smoothly thanks to the tiny spheres of jojoba oil and vitamin E. I can create either a thick or thin line with ease.  The Hyperliner is extremely pigmented and also waterproof. It doesn’t smudge and the color stays true all day.

Speaking of color, I love the Ultraviolet shade! It is a dark purplish-black that I find myself reaching for day after day. This really is a wonderful eyeliner and I am definitely picking up more colors - Glamorous Thief and Kanzashi are totally calling my name.

E is for Eddie, F is for Funkhouser, A is for Eddie Funkhouser face products

I’ve been trying to keep my rendezvous with Eddie Funkhouser under the covers but I think it’s time to come clean again. Eddie, that rogue, is now following me on Disqus and Twitter. I’m following him with Luxlight Revitalizing Foundation, Luxlight Hydrating Primer plus Luxlight Illuminator Pen. When these were sent for review I knew that Eddie Funkhouser was only sending me a little extra loving. That’s how it is with the two of us.

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Hydrating Primer

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Hydrating Primer

Luxlight Hydrating Primer ($14.99) comes in one shade, Candlelight. It was created to leave your skin dewy and delicious. It’s described as having a luminous glow with a golden peach undertone. What I like about the primer is that it is a beautiful glow and one that I can wear any day, any time, with any foundation (shh, don’t tell on me). With my fair skin I was a little leery about wearing a tinted primer but that feeling was dispelled once I started using it. It can be used alone for those of you who prefer not wearing a foundation. Or you can mix it in with your foundation or just wear it as a primer under foundation (preferably Luxlight Revitalizing).

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Hydrating Primer

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Hydrating Primer

But why do you want to use this? For starters it has Glycerin in it for skin softening. It also contains Castor Seed Oil and Jojoba Oil to condition and smooth. Other ingredients are Squalene, Vitamins A, C and E. And the best part is that you can wear it alone on your arms and/or legs to give you a soft glow that won’t rub off.

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Revitalizing Foundation

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Revitalizing Foundation

Luxlight Revitalizing Foundation ($14.99) comes in 6 shades (fair, light, medium beige, medium, medium tan and golden dark). I have this in Light which is for light skin with yellow-olive undertones but I think when I rebuy it I’ll try Fair since I have cool undertones. Even though this is a little warm on me the foundation is so lightweight that the color still works great. Eddie’s website describes this as “ultralight, creamy, and buildable formula enhances skin’s natural radiance for a flawless, light-diffused finish throughout the day”. I can’t put it any better. I’m using this in a single layer and not building up the coverage. I really prefer it as a light coverage natural looking foundation.

This foundation may not be for everyone though because of the ingredients. It contains Talc to give it a soft focus, diffused light finish. It also contains silicones to extend the wear. I know both of those can be a problem for some people although they aren’t for me. Other ingredients are Volatiles (long wear properties and fast drying application), Resins (long wear properties), Glycerin and Vitamin E. I’ve worn this in winter, spring and summer and am enjoying how my skin looks. Sometimes I wear the Primer, sometimes I don’t. Eddie doesn’t seem to mind. He told me he likes me both ways.

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Illuminator

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Illuminator

The other facial product I have is the Luxlight Illuminator. This is a pen like product with a brush. You’ve seen them before for a whole lot more money than the $11.99 this costs. This is available in two shades (Candlelight for a cool luminous glow and Arclight for a warm glow).

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Illuminator

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Illuminator

This versatile pen will add illumination to any area of your face you want. Highlight your brow bone, the bridge of your nose, the cupids bow of your lips and the tip of your chin to make sure the light catches you at your best.  It’s not a concealer but it is a wonderful highlighter/illuminator. This contains: talc, volatiles, light reflecting pigments, glycerin and peptides.

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Illuminator in Candlelight

Eddie Funkhouser Luxlight Illuminator in Candlelight

Since Eddie Funkhouser and I first got together he’s spread himself out a little more. We are lucky enough to be able to purchase his products at a variety of places like gloss48.com, blush.com, nastygal.com and urbanoutfitters.com. Also some of you incredibly lucky ladies can see the line in person at a variety of Rite Aid stores (if only that were me!). As for me, I’ll just keep hangin’ with Eddie and make my move when the time is right!

Have you been introduced to Eddie Funkhouser cosmetics yet? He might be just the man and brand you are looking for to stretch your pennies while remaining beautiful as always. — Marcia
