Frizz Busters

Frizz Busters

Frizz Busters

Frizz happens.

Frizz isn’t pretty.

Frizz doesn’t make me happy.

 Frizz needs to be busted.

Even the women in the new Ghostbusters movie appear to have frizz. Not a pretty sight. So what do we do? We find products that help us tame the frizz and that’s what today is all about.

AQUIS TOWELS

Aquis Towel Lisse Luxe in Chevron

Aquis Towel Lisse Luxe in Chevron

Aquis Towels have been around for at least 20 years but they’ve changed over time. I remember buying my first one and being amazed at the difference using this towel on my hair. When drying your hair, using friction causes frizz. With an Aquis towel or turban you allow the water to wick out of your hair leaving it easier to to style without frizz. My newest one was sent by Aquis and I am in love with it. Sunday, July 10th I’ll be showing more pictures and telling you more about this towel but I can assure you that you need one of their towels in your life.

BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT ACAI SMOOTHING SERUM and THERMAL STRAIGHTENING BALM

Brazilian Blowout Thermal Straightening Balm and Smoothing Serum

Brazilian Blowout Thermal Straightening Balm and Smoothing Serum

After towel drying my hair I turn to serum, balms and other products to be able to even get a wet brush or wide tooth comb through my hair. I’ve used the Brazilian Blowout Acai line on and off for years. I get a keratin treatment about every 8 months so my hair is basically straight and fends for itself most of the time with frizz. But if I forget to use product I’m lucky to make it through one day let alone several. The Thermal Straightening Balm is used when I blow dry my hair since it locks out moisture. The Smoothing Serum is a multi-tasker. Not only is it great for blow drying and flat ironing but it’s recommended for use when you go swimming. Wet your hair and smooth some of the serum in to protect your hair from chlorine and salt. You don’t need to have a keratin treatment to use these great products, they are great for everyone.

LIVING PROOF FRIZZ NOURISHING STYLING CREAM and STRAIGHT

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream and Straight

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream and Straight

Unless I’m testing a new line I like to switch up the products I use so I’m always going back to Living Proof. Everything I’ve tried from them has been excellent. My go-to line is the No Frizz one. Their Nourishing Styling Cream is just the thing to stop frizz. As they say “weightlessly blocks humidity, smoothes and conditions, no heavy silicones or oils”. If you believe in frizz busting this is one of my favorites. After buying it the first time I quickly bought a second during a holiday special. Straight Style|Lab is a spray that I use when I wash my hair. I apply the Nourishing Styling Cream otherwise I can’t comb through my hair. Then I spray this on in sections to seal. This can be used on wet or dry hair but it’s best used before you heat style.

DERMORGANIC LEAVE-IN TREATMENT AND FAST DRY SHAPING SPRAY

DermOrganic Leave-In Treatment and Fast Dry Shaping Spray

DermOrganic Leave-In Treatment and Fast Dry Shaping Spray

I’m a huge fan of DermOrganic products. The first time I used them they were sent to me but I’ve since purchased several of the products. The Leave-In Treatment is a repurchase for me. This is a wonderful leave-in that is so amazingly light that you’d almost never know it was in your hair. But you do know because it does such a great job adding softness, shine, thermal protection, and controlling frizz. It’s made with Argan Oil of Morocco. While it’s not advertised as a frizz buster, it definitely works that way for me.

Fast Dry Shaping Spray is a great lightweight spray even though the name says Plus Hold. I hate helmet hair and I only use a spray on days that are very important style wise (like my niece’s upcoming outdoor wedding). I included this since it does a good job of allowing me to brush through my hair yet controlling it and keeping frizz from taking over. It’s vegan and there is no: animal testing, artificial preservatives, sulfates, gluten, sodium or chloride, salt, parabens, MEA, DEA or dyes. Plus it has a pleasant fragrance unlike so many sprays I’ve tried.

Makeup Wars is all about hair – Living Proof and Brazilian Blowout Acai are my choices

We are a confusing bunch around here. Last week for Top Ten Beauty we talked about hair and this week for Makeup Wars we are also talking about hair. I’m actually glad because I mixed them up and now I get to add more hair products that I use all the time.

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

First thing to know about me is that I get my hair professionally straightened. I recently had another Brazilian Blowout procedure done, at least my 6th one. At the present time I’m only using the Acai line made by Brazilian Blowout but that will change in about a month. Prior to that I was using Pai-Shau and Living Proof. There are two things that you need to make sure are absent from your hair products whenever you have it straightened: they must be sulfate-free and have no sodium chloride. The sodium pulls the straightening out of your hair so that it doesn’t last. I watch for that in all products I use but especially during the first 6 weeks after a treatment.

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products are specially formulated for a keratin treatment. They are the aftercare regimen developed to extend the life of your Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatment. Even if you have another brand of treatment done, I’d still recommend these products since they do the job they are formulated to do: keep your hair straight, frizz free, smooth and silky looking.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are products I’d use 365 days a year. I find they keep my hair from drying out. My hair retains moisture because they contain smoothing proteins that fortify and seal the cuticle.

The conditioner provides UVA/UVB protection and is safe for color-treated hair. This is a mild everyday conditioner that glides through my hair.

All the Brazilian Blowout Acai products have a light citrus fragrance that doesn’t linger but I’d love it if it did since it’s so pleasant.

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

The Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque is to be used approximately once a week. My hair is shorter now than when I first started having my hair straightened so I find I only need this about every 10 days. My hairdresser swears by the Deep Conditioning Masque and uses it instead of the conditioner. She has beautiful thick hair that always looks lustrous and healthy. This masque not only smoothes and conditions, it promotes shine while also infusing moisture in your hair. The masque is what’s going to help with the longevity of a keratin treatment.

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Brazilian Blowout has created several products to help style your hair. My favorite of these is the Acai Daily Smoothing Serum. I always have to put in a styling product before I brush through my wet hair and this one is great. It’s clear and not too thick, has that luscious citrus scent, and helps detangle my wet hair. This is what keeps my hair looking shiny and fights the humidity.

I’ve repurchased these products over and over. I use Amazon since I save a bundle over what my hair salon sells it for. My Deep Conditioning Masque is the newest of my replacement products so it has the new packaging.

Living Proof No Frizz

Living Proof No Frizz

Another brand that I’m crazy about is Living Proof. I use the FRIZZ line which is the No Frizz line. Sephora had several samples available of Living Proof so I took advantage of those to see what I thought of the line. Once I got the samples of No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, I was sold. Living Proof is available at Ulta, Sephora and Amazon but I find that the prices on Amazon are much better so that’s where my replacements will come from. And I will replace these products since they’ve giving me living proof that they work well.

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Living Proof No Frizz information

Both Living Proof FRIZZ shampoo and conditioner sold me when I saw that they were color safe, sulfate-free, and contained no heavy silicones or oils. I can add an oil I like when styling but that’s my choice. The first new anti-frizz technology in over 30 years, it does what silicones can’t; eliminate frizz by blocking humidity-without weighing hair down.” This shampoo’s key ingredient is PolyfluoroEster which creates an invisible shield on the hair to lock in moisture-proof smoothness and repel dirt and oil, so you can go longer between washes to break the frizz and damage cycle.

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

I chose to buy Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream as the product to use after washing my hair. I always need something to comb through so I’ll be tangle free. While it’s more expensive than their Frizz Leave In Conditioner, it has more benefits.

No Frizz derives performance from Living Proof’s “miracle molecule,” PolyfluoroEster, to create a weightless shield on hair that blocks humidity absorption, smooths the cuticle, and repels dirt. The PolyfluoroEster shield is established over the first five uses of the No Frizz regimen, so it becomes stronger, the longer you use it—and can be maintained with consistent use of No Frizz products.

That’s the reason I chose the Nourishing Styling Cream. I need so little that it doesn’t matter that it’s a little more money. Plus it really works. In the winter when I knew I was coming towards the end of my treatment, this is what kept my hair from misbehaving.

In the future I’ll be exploring more from Living Proof. I actually have a travel set of A Perfect Day that I will break into in the future. Until then I plan to continue my FRIZZ routine.

Favorite travel size products

top ten tuesdayTop Ten Tuesday decided to share our top ten travel products but I just can’t do that. I have way more than 10 so I’m going to share what I’ll be buying and taking on upcoming trips. I have a 3 day weekend trip in August and then in the winter I’ll be going south for about 8 days so I’m in planning mode.

Let’s first start with what travel size treasures I’m taking for my 3 day weekend trip (I’m sure more will be added though). There aren’t a lot of mini cosmetics around but you can easily find travel sizes of skincare and haircare. My best sources for these small products are subscription boxes like IPSY and Glossybox. I also watch Sephora’s emails carefully because they often have codes for deluxe samples that are great for travel or to stick in your purse. Even though I don’t travel that often I like to be able to try new things by using samples.  — Marcia

SKINCARE:

1) ADVENTURESS SWIPES* are great to stick in my purse. They are the size of my palm and thin enough that they take up almost no space. My favorite is the YouVee Sunscreen Swipes which you can open, use, close, use later. They won’t last for more than a day but it’s a great day trip product. (A box of 24 is $33)

There are three types of swipes:

Naturally Liberating Cleanser Swipes are a fragrance free creamy cleanser that will leave your skin hydrated.

Boldly Nourishing Moisturizer Swipes are anti-aging and contain a number of good for your skin ingredients.

YouVee Sunscreen Swipes are SPF30 and are invaluable. This is a great way to refresh your sunscreen. Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 9.7% Sunscreen, Titanium Dioxide 6.5% Sunscreen.

2.  ALGENIST SKINCARE products are fabulous. I use a lot of different types of skincare and Algenist is one of my very favorite brands. I’ve gotten travel sizes through Sephora points and codes and on the Algenist website where they have 17 different travel sizes for sale. They also have travel kits and I’ve purchased those. Three of my favorites that will be coming on both my trips – Retinol & Lifting Serum ($33 mini that’s twice the size of mine), Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Cream ($40 for the mini that’s twice the size of mine) and Complete Eye Renewal Balm.

3.  KLORANE SMOOTHING AND RELAXING PATCHES FOR EYES were in a recent IPSY bag. Since my weekend trip is a wedding I’m bringing one of these to use the afternoon of the wedding so I’ll look more refreshed. I have other options like the eye patches from ToGoSpa that I love but for this trip the very thin Klorane will slip into a pocket of my purse easily.

4.  SUPERGOOP EVERYDAY SUNSCREEN was also in one of my IPSY bags and I was so excited. I’ve gone through several of these in the past. When it comes to samples in those subscriptions, when they send a brand like SUPERGOOP it’s A-OK with me. This size is perfect for a 3 days trip. I’ll put this on in the morning and then keep my Adventuress YouVee Swipes with me during the day.

5.  LIVING PROOF FRIZZ SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER and PRIME STYLE EXTENDER are samples I received not that long ago with a Sephora code. I’d been wanting to try Living Proof and the code came at the right time. There were 12 nice size samples in the package. I’ve been testing it and one packet has lasted me through 3 shampoos and there’s probably enough for 2 more. I’m very impressed with Living Proof and now I see what the fuss is all about.

6.  AMIKA PERK UP DRY SHAMPOO is something I’ve actually given away in the past but when I recently got this in an Ipsy bag I realized I needed it. It’s going on my winter trip to refresh my hair when I get up too late to wash.

7.  CONAIR TRAVEL SIZE DETANGE BRUSH* is my favorite travel companion. Now that I’ve learned how great wet brushes are I want one on every trip. It’s a compact size brush that works great for me after I wash my hair or on dry hair. Love this baby!

8.  COVER FX ILLUMINATING PRIMER was a code sample from Sephora. I’d been dying to try it and I’m so glad I had something I wanted to buy when the code was available. This is a terrific, unfragranced, primer that will be perfect under my foundation at night for the parties I’ll be at.

9. LORAC BEHIND THE SCENES EYE SHADOW PRIMER is one of my favorite primers so having this travel size from my LORAC Pro eyeshadow palette is wonderful. I know my eyeshadow primers aren’t that big but the way I overpack pack, I need to make space.

10.  IT COSMETICS BYE BYE CONCEALER was in a kit I bought from the IT Cosmetics website. I prefer the concealer in Fair but this one in Light is great too. I’m a huge fan of this concealer anyway so having this in my kit was a great bonus.

11.  IT COSMETICS HELLO LASHES MASCARA was in the same kit. I’ve named this my favorite mascara in the past and it’s still way up there. It’s the perfect size for travel.

12. URBAN DECAY 24/7 GLIDE ON LIP PENCIL in OZONE – another IPSY delight. This clear liner means I don’t have to travel with other lip pencils and can still bring my umpteen lip colors without worry.

14.  BIODERMA SENSIBLO H2O MICELLAR WATER is a mini that is now available for $6.95 on the Beautylish website. When I bought my Bioderma Micellar Water my mini was a bonus and I was afraid to use it up. Now I know I can replace it since it’s not refillable and I’m doing a happy dance about that.

Get your PhD with Living Proof Perfect Hair Day

living_proof_ad_aniston-304I was so excited to try Living Proof products…I mean, who doesn’t want hair as beautiful as Jennifer Aniston’s? And while Jennifer has stylists and is a lottery winner of life in the looks department, products do make a difference.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day

Living Proof Perfect hair Day

My hair is definitely product dependent. Whether or not I have a good hair day is 100% dependent on which shampoo and conditioner I use. I have a lot of hair, but it’s very fine – so weighed down it’s flat and lifeless. However, without enough conditioner it’s frizzy and lackluster.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo

Living Proof Perfect hair Day Shampoo

Perfect hair Day Shampoo (8 oz. $24) promises an awful lot. It has something called the Healthy Hair Molecule (OFPMA) that does all of this:

  • delivers the five benefits for a perfect hair day—smoothness, volume, conditioning, strength and polish
  • helps you wash your hair less often
  • improves hair health instantly and gets better over time

PhD Shampoo does not have sulfates, which can dry hair. It also doesn’t have oils or silicone, which can weigh down hair. The Healthy Hair Molecule is like a superhero for hair, surrounding the strands and repelling dirt while smoothing and strengthening hair. It has a light citrus fragrance that is very pleasant. I use this in conjunction with the Perfect hair Day Conditioner (8 oz. $24).

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Conditioner

The Perfect hair Day Conditioner has the same Healthy Hair Molecule that smooths, conditions, volumizes, strengthens, and polishes hair. After using these products for five washings, the verdict is – LOVE!!!!

Living Proof really does give me a perfect hair day!

Living Proof really does give me a perfect hair day!

Every time I use my Living Proof PhD hair products I really do have a great hair day. My hair has tons of volume and shine with no frizz at all. I typically wash my hair every third day, but I can wash every fourth day with Living Proof.

I am so happy I got my PhD.  I will never ever be without this in my shower. You have to give Living Proof Perfect hair Day products a try!  – Lisa

Does Living Proof Prevent Hair ‘Pouf’?

February of 2011 will mark 2 years since the introduction of the Living Proof ‘no frizz’ haircare line. Many beauty industry analysts called it a ‘breakthrough’. This line of shampoos, conditioners and styling products is a huge seller at both Sephora and QVC, as well as on their own website.

The Living Proof brand has been a staple in my haircare rotation since I first tried it in late ’09. Currently I use the Shampoo, Conditioner, leave-in conditioner and the two styling creams for medium to thick hair ( Straight Making and Wave Shaping). I especially like LP during the humid summer months here in New England .

One of my favorite factors of the LP line is that they do not have a really strong scent. Yes, they do have SOME scent (evidenced by the inclusion of Fragrance/Parfum on their labels) but I believe it just might be a masking scent, as all the products smell clean and not in the least overpowering.  The shampoo is also sulfate free. I am one of those poor individuals who gets a bad scalp reaction from some products that contain sulfates, so this is good news for me.

The shampoo (8 oz, $24) lathers up nicely and rinses away cleanly without leaving my hair feeling stripped. My hair is dry, somewhat wavy, and color treated, so I wash it every other day. However, on the rare occasions when I have washed my hair two days in a row, I still did not experience any dryness from the LP shampoo.

Living Proof conditioner (8 oz, $24) is moisturizing but not greasy. The bottle recommends leaving it on for 2 minutes if your hair is dry or damaged, so that is my usual practice. It also rinses out thoroughly leaving my hair soft and not greasy.

After shampooing and towel drying, I apply an even mixture of the Leave-In conditioner (4 oz, $24) and whichever styling cream is appropriate for how I’m wearing my hair that day. With the Wave Shaping cream, I let my hair dry naturally for as long as possible then blow it with a diffuser. My hair has much less tendency to frizz during blow drying when I use the LP products and I don’t get that ‘crunchy curl’ as I do from other curl products. With the Straight Making product, I dry my hair more thoroughly with the dryer and then smooth it with a brush or a straightening appliance.  Again, I see a noticeable difference in the amount of frizz than I would get without the products.

You can find the Living Proof products in Sephora stores and online at livingproof.com, sephora.com, and qvc.com.
