Max Factor is back and I’m loving it

Max Factor mascara, lipsticks, and eyeliner

Max Factor mascara, lipsticks, and eyeliner

When MAX FACTOR left the United States it was a sad time for lovers of their mascara. It was the only brand of mascara that I could count on from the drugstore. I had a few spare and used them up with sorrow. When they emailed and said they were bringing a limited amount of products back to the US I was thrilled and quickly sent my address for these samples. Now I’m going to be sad again if this was just a tease and they don’t stick around.

The four MAX FACTOR X products that are available are MASTERPIECEMAX mascara, MASTERPIECE High Precision Liquid Eyeliner, and LIPSTICKS in Simply Nude and Maroon Dust. Obviously a limited number that hopefully will grow.

MAX FACTOR X MASTPERPIECEMAX HIGH VOLUME AND DEFINITION MASCARA is available in Velvet Black locally (try Walgreens or Target) for $9.99.

MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECEMAX mascara

MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECEMAX mascara

The brush is a high tech IFX brush and is said to have 4x more volume than you’d have without. What I’ve found though is that the definition I get from this mascara is what stands out and reminds me of what I’d been missing.

MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECEMAX mascara

MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECEMAX mascara

Max Factor was the one that started the craze of using a rubber brush and soon everyone followed. This mascara has never smudged on me even after a nap. I don’t end up with pieces of mascara under my eyes. It’s on my lashes even through 12+ hour days. I instantly get definition and with two coats I get volumizing. If I decided to add a third coat there’d be even more volume.

Wearing MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECEMAX mascara and MASTERPIECE Liquid Eyeliner

Wearing MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECEMAX mascara and MASTERPIECE Liquid Eyeliner

MAX FACTOR X MASTERPIECE HIGH PRECISION LIQUID EYELINER ($9.99) is an intense black liquid liner with a non-typical brush. The brush is more like a paddle brush though on the small side. I’m used to a pencil tip so I had some problems with this liner. My picture is my first attempt with it and I wasn’t happy with the result. The liner is great if you like a thicker line but even with practice I’m not getting the thin line I prefer.

My eyes have never done well with a cat eye look since they are droopy at the ends. I’ve had pros do the look on me and it’s okay but I am a klutz when it comes to a cat eye or thick liner. But those of you who can wear a cat eye will love this deep dark slightly shiny liner.

max factor lipsticks 2

MAX FACTOR X LIPSTICKS ($9.99) are available in just two shades. These are both perfect for me but may be too light for many others. These are both renditions of nude lips and I’m head over heels in love with them. The one that really stole my heart is Simply Nude. This is a pink nude that I wear with a nude lipliner (Chanel Nude or Milani Nude) and it’s exactly the shade I’m most comfortable wearing. max factor both lipsticksSimply Nude is a light pink cool shade while Maroon Dust is warm peach nude on my lips. They are creamy and wonderfully comfortable to wear. I had been anxious to buy Charlotte Tilbury Kim K W lipstick but once I wore Simply Nude that desire disappeared since I think it gives an almost identical look color.

There’s no time to waste. This limited collection won’t be around for long. I know I’m ordering the mascara from Target in multiples since it meets all my criteria. I am really hoping that Max Factor sees the error of its ways and realizes that we need them back in the good old USA!

Boxycharm for January 2016 is all about eyes

Boxycharm January EYES ON 2016

Boxycharm January EYES ON 2016

BOXYCHARM couldn’t have picked a better theme than EYES ON 2016 in my opinion. I’m all about the eyes, I could even write a song about it – but then you’d get tired of me! There are several things I like about my subscription to Boxycharm

* It’s $21 a month complete

* They only put in full size products

* There are usually 4 or 5 products per box

* You get a great value for the money. This month’s box adds up to $109 (MSRP) which isn’t too shabby!boxycharm jan insideWell now, what do we have here? I spy 4 full size pieces that are all about eyes!

BLINC MASCARA AMPLIFIED

Blinc Mascara Amplified

Blinc Mascara Amplified

If you haven’t tried Blinc Mascara before the first thing you need to know is that it’s a tube mascara. Actually it was the first tube mascara I ever tried and I loved it. Over the years I haven’t had an opportunity to use this again so that makes this a pleasure to find in my Boxycharm. Even better is that this is the new improved version. With Amplified you have the capability of applying as many coats as you want (that wasn’t possible with the original). When you remove this mascara, with water by the way, you’ll find little spider legs on your face. It doesn’t remove like a typical mascara, the tubes slide off without taking lashes with it. I haven’t opened this since I have too many mascaras in use but I am anxious to use it and see if it’s as good as I remember. ($26)

I admit that I complain about boxes containing black eyeliners but I’m going to make an exception for this black LIQUID eyeliner pen. I do love liquid liners especially when they are in pen form with a sturdy pointy tip. I prefer a thin liner but sometimes you just need a little more oomph and this should provide that. According to the directions you can smudge it too when you first apply. ($19)

Royal & Langnickel [R}evolution Boxy Charm Eye Set (top BX-85, BX-95, BX-90)

This set was put together for Boxycharm but the brushes are sold individually. When I’ve been to IMATS it has always amazed me to see the lines at the Royal & Langnickel tables. These well made yet inexpensive brushes are hits there. Any of the big makeup shows sell these at great prices. The value of the set according to Boyxycharm is $24 but the brushes are often on sale. The [R]evolution brushes are 100% Vegan yet they feel like natural hair. In this set is the BX-80 DETAIL, BX-90 CREASE, and BX-95 DETAIL SMUDGER. These are 3 essential brushes for me and it’s a nice addition to find in this month’s box.

Of course there had to be eyeshadows – what would EYES ON 2016 be without a palette? Coastal Scents Revealed Smoky Palette is a 20 shade palette with all the shades you need to have a smoky eye. There are medium to dark shades with just a few light ones. The palette contains mostly matte, satin and lightly shimmery shades with a few glittery ones thrown in to up the wow factor.

Coastal Scents Revealed Smoky Palette

There are 4 Revealed palettes from Coastal Scents. I have one from Boxycharm, used another from Boxycharm in a giveaway, and now here’s my third one. They list the value as $39.95 but it’s actually always on sale for $19.95. This is a semi-dupe of all the expensive Smoky palettes like Urban Decay’s. I can see myself getting a lot of use from this by just adding in a few lighter shades from my collection.

Makeup Wars perks up your eyes

MAKEUP WARS is all about eyes today, expanding from the typical to the somewhat atypical. Ways to perk up your eye makeup can be as simple or bold as wearing a colorful mascara as well as changing up your eyeliner from your typical black or dark brown. I’ve chosen my favorite colorful eyeliners to share with you since a day without eyeliner for me is a day my eyes disappear.

STILA GOT INKED CUSHION EYE LINER is my new favorite eyeliner. Yes I do play favorites and right now the play is with these very cool cushion eye liners. This is a liquid eyeliner unlike any you’ve used. It comes in a pot with the liquid under a cushion top. Use your favorite brush (I prefer a very thin one) and press it onto the webbed sponge top and you’ve got your color. Stila compares it to using a calligraphy pen that you dip into the sponge. These don’t seem like they’ll spill. I first bought it in Smoky Quartz Ink and after using it twice I knew I needed another so along came Copper Ink. Both are within my comfort zone but on the edge of it. You can go thick or thin, you can draw cat eyes, you can do anything your heart desires and the color will last. It comes in 6 shades (Black Obsidian, Amethyst, Blue Sapphire, Garnet plus Smoky Quartz and Copper).

Stila Got Inked Cushion Eye Liners

Stila Got Inked Cushion Eye Liners

Smoky Quartz Ink is a pewter taupe that is metallic and will take on the colors of your eye makeup depending on the light. While there’s no glitter in it, it looks that way because of the high shine. When I wear this with a gold and khaki combination it seems to pick up that khaki undertone. Copper Ink isn’t quite as metallic but it’s far from flat. It’s stunning with a variety of browns but when it really looks unique is wearing it with eyeshadow in the navy family. Copper Ink is making me shop my stash for new looks.

I’m a huge fan of liquid eyeliners but they are not all created equal. The length and sturdiness of the brush are the keys for me finding the ones I love. While I don’t wear pencil eyeliners that often I’ve found that Pur Minerals (now Pur Cosmetics) has a combination that has the best of both worlds. DOUBLE EGO EYELINERS are liquid on one end and pencil on the other end. Use separately or combine for great looks.

Pur Minerals Double Ego liners

Look at those colors! Milan (inky black), Tasmania (dark chocolate), Madagascar (black gold), Bora Bora (royal blue), Swiss Alps (cool pewter), Rio de Janeiro (deep plum), Bali (emerald green), and Queensland (aquatic teal). While I mostly wear Tasmania I’ve been known to wear Swiss Alps (pewter) and Rio de Janiero (plum) to shake it up a bit. These are amazing eyeliners.

Last but far from least on my list are the YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID EYELINER PENS. These are available in 5 shades that are beautiful and go beyond black. The brush is what makes these so wonderful. For me they glide on and last, rarely going astray. I’ve bought backups of Marron since it’s an amazing brown eyeliner. Gris (soft grey) and Verde (dark forest green) are unique to my eyeliner collection.

September brings new Pixi Beauty #pixibeauty #fall2015

Pixi Beauty Endless Brow Gel, Cat Eye Ink, Mattelustre Lipstick

Pixi Beauty Endless Brow Gel, Cat Eye Ink, Mattelustre Lipstick

Welcome some new products to the world of Pixi by Petra this month with the launch of Mattelustre Lipstick, Endless Brow Gel Pen and Cat Eye Ink. These are certainly welcome into my world since they were sent to test.

This year matte lips have taken off like American Pharoah – it’s definitely won the Triple Crown with all cosmetic companies. But Pixi Beauty has a slightly different take on matte lips and one that’s much easier to wear with their MATTELUSTRE lipsticks. There are 11 enticing shades that are only $12 each. What makes these different is that they are not a flat matte. Instead there’s a light lustre finish and a slight plumping to your lips with these long lasting lipsticks. My lips didn’t feel dry when wearing them. I have Pure Fuchsia which is a vivid cool shade of this dark pink. I also have Plum Berry described as “cerise berry tint” which on me is quite red, I don’t see the plum but I do see the berry.

Pixi Beauty Mattelustre lipsticks in Plum Berry and Pure Fuchsia

Pixi Beauty Mattelustre lipsticks in Plum Berry and Pure Fuchsia

The tubes themselves are Pixi green but the outer packaging is a covering of a bright fuchsia color to keep the lipsticks sealed. They are a chunky tube but the lipstick itself is the normal size. Pixi added peptides, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C & E help to create fuller, smoother looking lips with these 11 beauties. Be sure to look at these on Pixi’s website to see great representations of the shades.

Pixi Beauty Mattelustre lipsticks in Plum Berry and Pure Fuchsia

Pixi Beauty Mattelustre lipsticks in Plum Berry and Pure Fuchsia

Both of these shades are in the cool family but there are others like Peach Blossom, Honey Bare, and Bitten Rose that are for those of you who look better in warmer shades. What I’m going to search Target for is Plump Pink, a cool mauve pink. Happily for me these are fragrance free and a demi-matte formula rather than a flat matte.

CAT EYE INK is a new liquid liner ($14) with an unusual tip. It’s a slanted felt tip that you can use to create a thin line if you are careful or a thicker one. It is only available in Intense Black which is typical for a cat eye. It’s a very wet liner so you can’t just slap it on. Take your time with this so that it doesn’t bleed since it’s so juicy. I think you need to use an eyeshadow primer first and let that dry down, then pat on your lid shade or a translucent shade. Next apply the liner carefully. Once it’s set, it’s set and it’s very long lasting. I’ve had times it was easy to get the liner look I wanted but other times that this didn’t cooperate with me.

Pixi Beauty Cat Eye Ink Pen

Pixi Beauty Cat Eye Ink Pen

My favorite new product is ENDLESS BROW GEL PEN ($11) which I know I’ll be buying again and again. I’m in love with Pixi Beauty brow products and until this arrived I’d been using the Brow Powder Palette non-stop. But Endless Brow Gel Pen has kidnapped me and is making me use this instead. It comes in three shades (Light a neutral light taupe, Medium which is neutral ash brown, and Dark a neutral cocoa gray). I have it in Medium and when I swatched it I really was worried it would be too light. That worry was changed to relief the first day I wore it. With my (sparse) dark brown eyebrows it’s a great shade.

Pixi Endless Brow Gel Pen in Medium

Pixi Endless Brow Gel Pen in Medium

The texture of this brow pencil is unusual, I’ve only tried one other like it (but much more expensive). The formula is soft and smooth and truly glides on. It’s just so easy for me to use to fill in my brows. If you like to draw individual hairs then this might not be for you though. But I’ll be buying it as soon as I notice it’s getting too small to use.

Be sure you join the VIP Program so that you can earn Pixi Dust which will bring you benefits for buying, receiving their newsletter, and using social media. It’s free and easy and you’ll be rewarded.  Pixi-VIP-Rewards-Visual

Pixi Beauty always has some great new products coming out and this month I think they did an especially good job. Are you ready to add some Pixi and Pixi Dust to your life? — Marcia

Pur Minerals gives twice the pleasure with Double Ego eyeliners and a giveaway

PUR Minerals Double Ego Dual Ended Eyeliners

PUR Minerals Double Ego Dual Ended Eyeliners

Double your pleasure with double sided eyeliners from PUR Minerals! I’m one who is more than doubling my pleasure with Pür Minerals’ 2-in-1 Double Ego Dual Ended Eye Liner since I’ve been using them all the time ever since I received these. I never go without eyeliner, never! Therefore having 8 pen/pencils and 16 colors makes for one happy blogger.

Pür Minerals Double Ego liners are available at ULTA and Ulta.com for $21 each. Like I said there are eight beautiful shades and those shades can be mixed and matched plus you can use them to create other shades. It’s like having 24 shades if I played my cards right.

Pur Minerals Double Ego liners

Pur Minerals Double Ego liners

The available shades will take you on a journey to the far reaches of the world: Milan (inky black), Tasmania (dark chocolate), Madagascar (black gold), Bora Bora (royal blue), Swiss Alps (cool pewter), Rio de Janeiro (deep plum), Bali (emerald green), and Queensland (aquatic teal).

If you notice though I’ve only shown you 6 shades since these are the ones I’m using. I’ve got 3 shades I haven’t tested for a giveaway for one of you. I received 2 Bora Boras so one is in this giveaway, we’re also giving away Milan (black) and Bali (emerald green) so keep reading.

These liners are so much fun. I’m a huge fan of liquid liner so of course I use that the most but I find that liquids don’t always last that well on my bottom lashline since I do get a little teary at times. That’s where the very smooth retractable eyeliner pencils come in. I can coordinate with the opposite side and have a similar shade on top and bottom. Or I can use them both and create a unique shade.

Pur Minerals Double Ego in Bora Bora

Pur Minerals Double Ego in Bora Bora

While Pür Minerals Bora Bora appears to be a royal blue it’s got a teal touch so I wouldn’t really call it royal like Ulta does. Just wearing the liquid liner on my top lashline I do see royal but the pencil has more color and interest to it. Combine and you get a tricked out royal teal.

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Tasmania

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Tasmania

Pür Minerals Tasmania is my most used liquid liner from this group. I love a chocolate brown liquid and wear this often. I used to struggle with finding the right shade of brown since some can be too black and some can be too red. The liquid is a true brown whereas the pencil does have an undertone that’s got some redness to it. When I wear them together though I have the perfect shade.

Pür Minerals Double Ego Madagascar

Pür Minerals Double Ego Madagascar

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Madagascar is described as black gold by Pur and Ulta but I see a lot of green to it so a lot depends on the light and what you are wearing with this liner. You can bring out the green but you can also bring out the gold.

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Rio de Janeiro

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Rio de Janeiro

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Rio de Janeiro takes me on a trip I want to be on. This gorgeous purple is a liquid liner shade I’ve been missing in my collection. The liquid side is definitely purple while the pencil side is more of a black plum. When mixed together they are magnificent.

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Swiss Alps

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Swiss Alps

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Swiss Alps is one of my very favorite because of the three types of shades I can get with this. The liquid side is black but not a jet black, the pencil is an easy to wear pewtered charcoal and together they are magic and appear to be a darkened pewter that glows.

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Queensland and Bali

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Queensland and Bali

Pür Minerals Double Ego in Queensland and Bali appear very similar to me even though the descriptions are different. I played eeny meeny to pick the one that I’d keep and that turned out to be Queensland which is a beautiful teal. Bali is described as emerald green but when you look at my picture with both open I think you’ll agree that it’s a teal version of green. Although only the winner will know that since my swatches are of Queensland.

These Pür Minerals eyeliners are going to do whatever you want them to do from a daytime or easy evening look, to a cat’s eye with a swoosh of the liquid liner to a dramatic eye. I do have two warnings though about these. First is that the dry side is a mineral eyeliner and it is very soft so don’t open it too far out and don’t overdo the pressure when using it or the tip will break. Of course you can always click up more but you don’t want to waste the eyeliner. Second is that you need a true eye makeup remover for these Double Ego liners. The colors are intense and some of the shades can stain. I find that a makeup remover for waterproof eye makeup works the best. I soak my cotton pad with the remover and hold it on my eye without rubbing to soften the liner, making it easier to remove. If it looks like it’s still there, just wait until you wash up in the morning and you’ll see that it’s faded away.

I found these great eyeliners at both Ulta.com and Kohls.com and I’m pretty sure they are in the stores too. For $21 you’ll have a trio of great looks. — Marcia

The battle of liquid liners – tarte precision longwear eyeliner and Physicians Formula Eye Booster

Even though I professed to have found my holy grail of brown liquid eyeliners I must admit that I didn’t stop. I’ve kept going and have continued my search. I still love Youngblood Maroon but I was hoping to find one that was easier to get ahold of. With a liquid eyeliner sometimes I’ll find that it works perfectly one day and the next it’s drying out and not the same. In one week I found that with both Youngblood and Stila so the search was back on.

My two choices were tarte Lights, Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner in brown and Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Liner + Serum also in Deep Brown.

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

If you had asked me before I bought these two which I’d most likely prefer I’d have said tarte. I am a big fan of tarte cosmetics and have many wonderful products that I love from them and that get used constantly. Other than the gel eyeliners that Physicians Formula used to make, I really don’t have much PF in my collection. Let’s see who is the winner of this battle.

TARTE LIGHTS, CAMERA, LASHES PRECISION LONGWEAR EYELINER is available in two shades – brown, which is described as deep brown, and black. This $20 eyeliner comes in beautiful tarte purple packaging with a gold and hot pink/purple box that’s just as beautiful.

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

The eyeliner wears for a long time and I have no problem with it lasting just like promised. This is limited edition which surprised me since I’d expect tarte to have a liquid liner among their selections. As beautiful as this looks, I have two problems with it. #1 is the color

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

Does this look brown to you? It looks black on my hand and also on my eyes. I have favorite black liquids but it’s brown I wear most of the time. Problem #2 is the length of the tip

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner

It’s very long and I find it hard to control. Considering that I wear liquid eyeliners all the time, I do have the hang of them but this tarte Lights Camera Lashes Precision Longwear Eyeliner gives me grief. I always make mistakes that have to be corrected. That combined with the very deep color means this is the loser of this battle for me.

PHYSICANS FORMULA 2-IN-1 LASHLASH BOOSTING EYELINER + SERUM is a double duty product. Not only is it an easy to use liquid liner but it’s meant to help with lash growth.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

I’ve only been using this for a few weeks so I don’t know if it will help with it but the claims say that it will help with longer and fuller looking lashes. I’ve been using NR Skin Lash Teez and I’ve noticed a difference in the length of my lashes and I do believe that this is helping too. It can’t hurt can it?

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Now let’s talk about the two things that I didn’t love about the tarte – color and tip point.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum IS brown. It’s a great brown too because it looks brown and natural when on my eyes. The tip is very easy to work with because it’s a great length. It’s at least 1/2 cm shorter than the tarte. That may not seem like much but it’s the difference between a sloppy line and a clean neat one.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum

The Physicians Formula liner is also less expensive and you know there are always specials on it. I bought mine at Meijers and got 10% off plus $5 off my beauty purchase. CVS seems to charge more for this but then they have reward card deals almost every week.

Obviously the winner of the battle of liquid eyeliners was revealed earlier and it’s Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum. This is the one I’ll continue to buy and recommend to you.  What are your favorite liquid eyeliners? Have you tried either of these? — Marcia

Walk the Line eyeliner in Black Light is one of the new Neon Colors. It didn’t go on as smoothly as I’m used to so I had to go over it more than once. It’s a bright purple and I do wonder if it would look different under a black light. Glitzy is, well, glitzy! It’s a bright teal green with glitter. Not for us oldies but it’s certainly fun. Twist of Lime went on the smoothest of all and in spite of the lime brightness, looked the best.
