Brow Renovation Serum from Joey Healy to the rescue

Joey Healy Brow Renovation Serum

Joey Healy Brow Renovation Serum

There is one thing that I’m a total bust at – well one thing I’ll admit to at least. That’s doing my eyebrows. I find it very difficult to get them to look natural when I apply any kind of eyebrow product on them. But I’m bound and determined to get better at this.

About 7 months ago I was sent Brow Renovation Serum from Joey Healy. You’ve seen Lisa doing lots of reviews for Joey Healy and it’s a line she loves. I haven’t tried anything other than this serum from his line but I see Lisa often enough to know that her brows look great with the products she uses from Joey Healy.

The reason I chose Brow Renovation Serum out of all the products that they sent to the blog is that I have wimpy brows. I swear they were great until one disastrous waxing session and now the front of my brows are skimpy. The shape is good at least but the hair at the start of my eyebrows are scant. I have used Joey Healy’s Brow Renovation Serum faithfully although I didn’t feel like I was seeing any progress. But now I realize that I have seen progress even though it’s not what I expected it to be.

What I’m finding is that my eyebrows are much thicker, there’s more hair and I actually have to tame them. I’ve never had to use a wax or brow gel on them because they were fine. I still don’t have a ton of brow hair in the front of my brows but I’m amazed that I have eyebrows to work with after all this time.

The directions on Brow Renovation Serum say to use it morning and night for 6 weeks and then switch to just nightly. I don’t use this during the day though. I find that the serum is a little on the thick side and a little too wet for daytime use. I don’t like using any cosmetics on my eyebrows with this on so I’ve just used the serum at night.

Brow Renovation Serum is a paraben-free formula containing pentapeptides, glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients work together along with ACE vitamins and moisturizing agents to help condition, hydrate and strengthen brow hair.

Joey Healy’s website says you’ll see a difference in 6 weeks if you use this twice a day. My results varied for a few reasons – 1) I used it once a day and 2) I’m fighting Father Time and as I age my hair, including facial hair, changes for the worse.

Here’s an after without using anything on my eyebrows. You can see that they are fuller throughout even if they aren’t perfect.

But now when I use eyebrow makeup I actually have eyebrows that aren’t embarrassing.

This serum has worked for me even though it’s a very slow process; I continue to use it every evening. My eyebrows are fuller and even the front section is a little more lush. Even after 8 months of daily use, this still has enough product in it to keep going. I don’t always remember to fill in my eyebrows (old habits die hard) but when I do I thank Joey Healy and Brow Renovation Serum for helping make my eyebrows appear healthier and fuller. — Marcia

In search of the perfect brows with Joey Healy

I think as I get older, I get lazier. How about you?

I hate taking the time to do my eyebrows, but we all know what a big impact eyebrows can make. Frida Kahlo would have a much different look if she were alive now and  Joey Healy got a hold of her.

Major tweezer action needed!

Frida sports a different look than we wear today

But I don’t have the time or the patience anymore for brow stencils, eyebrow wax, and hour-long tweezing sessions. During my search for the best simple brow routine, the BIZ received some Joey Healy items…and I found my answer.

Joey

Joey Healy’s trio of awesomeness

These three items (plus a tweezer) are all you will ever need for great looking brows in seconds.  I already reviewed the awesome tweezers HERE, so be sure to check that out.

classy packaging

All of Joey’s products come in chic, luxurious black faux-leather pouches.

Corduroy

Luxe Brow Powder in Corduroy

The Corduroy Luxe Brow Powder ($28) is one of six shades offered by Joey. The shades go from the lightest blonde to the deepest black, with some great options for redheads.

I chose Corduroy, a cool ash taupe. It looks a little grey, but it works fantastically and suits blondes as well as brunettes. It gives just enough color to define the brows without making them the focal point of your face (which you really want to avoid – focus on eyes or lips.  A prominent eyebrow is NOT a good thing.) Corduroy is actually the number one shade in Joey’s line. The pan is huge, you will probably only need to buy one of these in your lifetime. You can use the powder dry for a natural finish or if you’d like a  more stylized look you can use it wet. The formula is waterproof so it definitely lasts all day.

brush

Duo Brow Brush – brush end

The Duo Brow Brush ($28) is an absolute essential. Your brow powder isn’t going to look good if you don’t have a great brow brush, that’s for sure. The brush end is angled perfectly for brows and is a mixture of cruelty-free boar and badger hair. This makes for a wonderfully stiff brush head, perfect for filling in brows.

spoolie

spoolie end

The spoolie end is also terrific – it’s very stiff so it brushes the eyebrows quickly and easily.

My brow routine takes about one minute. First, I sweep my eyebrow UP with the spoolie end of the Duo Brow Brush. Next, I tap in the Corduroy Luxe Powder with the brush end, dragging the brush upwards as I fill in the brow. I then brush my eyebrows up one more time with the spoolie end. Brushing the hairs up opens the eye and frames the face beautifully. If your eyebrow hairs are too long, you will have to take the time to trim them…long eyebrows are like long nose hairs, nothing anyone wants to see.

Structure Clear Set

Structure Clear Set

The final touch happens with the Brow Structure Clear Set ($25). While I brush my eyebrows up twice, if I don’t use my Brow Structure the hairs always fall at some point during the day. This is a water-resistant, transparent gel that sets your eyebrow and keeps it in place all day. It doesn’t leave brows stiff or sticky like brow wax can.

I previously posted about Joey’s excellent Brow Architect Stylo HERE, which I use every single morning without fail.  Now I am totally bananas for his Elite Sculpting Tweezer ($35).

I like my tweezers to grab every hair with ease.  I like them to precisely remove hair, without grabbing my skin and making an ugly situation even worse.    The Elite Sculpting Tweezer is sheer perfection – it’s made from stainless steel, and the elongated angled tips have no problem grabbing even the tiniest of hairs.

This is a tweezer that I can count on for both creating perfect brows and for keeping them up between major tweezing sessions.  It comes in a clear case that makes them easy to transport in case I spot any stray hairs.

I’ve endured many tweezers that can’t grab tiny hairs, or that always seem to grab skin, so it’s just a pleasure to use these tweezers.  Joey Healy knows his stuff, his line of brow products will easily create the perfect look for you.  See below for Joey’s take on the brows at the Oscars – there are some hits and some misses.  It’s fascinating!  - Lisa

OSCAR HITS according to Joey Healy

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway:

I dream a dream of perfect eyebrows. The Les Miserables starlet dazzled the red carpet with bold, brunette brows which worked perfectly to balance her short pixie cut.  I would have loved to see her sweep those bangs aside even more, to really showcase her flawless, bold brows.

Adele

Adele

Adele:

Adele’s brows definitely made the Skyfall (in a good way)! Her brow color perfectly complimented her sandy blonde locks and her beauty look is all about the eyes.  I love this soft, yet finished brow to complete her look, it says “glamour” all the way.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron:

With Charlize Theron’s newly cropped coif, there was no hiding those brows. She set her own trend for the evening, stepping away from thick, bushy brows, and went for a streamlined, elegant arch that works flawlessly with her bone structure. The ashy, taupe tone of her brows really brings out the emerald green in her eyes.

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington:

Kerry Washington wowed the crowd with her luscious, thick brows. This Django Unchainted actress looks like she just stepped off the New York Fashion Week runway. For someone with a prominent mouth, high cheek bones and large eyes, her brows harmoniously balanced the rest of her features. Her eyebrows play into her youthful appearance and enhance her fresh-faced look.

OSCAR MISSES

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain:

Jessica Chastain’s role in Zero Dark Thirty was all about the search, yet the search is still on for her eyebrows. To balance out her bold lip color, she needed a bold brow to keep her face in high/low proportion. She missed the mark on achieving a polished brow look and should have opted for a soft cinnamon powder.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence:

Oscar golden girl Jennifer Lawrence looked like Hollywood royalty, although her brows were not the stars of her beauty look. While her Oscar nominated role was bold and daring, her brows did not follow the Playbook. Whisper light and thin, her eyebrows are not up to my standards of perfection.

Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner:

Jennifer Garner showed support for hubby Ben Affleck on the red carpet, but her brows did not glam up her look. Jennifer’s eyebrows would benefit from being darker, especially with her light, airy makeup. Her shape is on-point, but the resulting brow looks patchy and sparse.

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried:

Amanda Seyfried’s brows are so Miserables. The awkard,  brassy tone is too light and looks disjointed from her hair color. A triumphant start to her shape sadly fizzles to an underwhelming tail. Her beauty look was simply not red carpet worthy.

Christina Choi and Le Metier de Beaute Face of the Day

christina choi FOD2

I used a combination of mostly Le Metier and Christina Choi products one day last week and I loved the results.  Here’s what I used:

For this face of the day, I used Le Metier de Beaute Classic Finish Foundation in V applied with a Beauty Blender. Next, I smoothed It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer under my eyes and on any dark or red areas.  After that, I applied Inglot Cream Blush in 81, followed by It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores loose powder and It Cosmetics Hello Light Powder Illumizer, plus a little bit of Le Metier Sun Kissed Bronzer.

CC eyes

Christina Choi Glitz & Glamour eyes

cc eyes

On my eyes, I used Christina Choi Glitz and Glamour which I reviewed HERE.  I used Chandelier on the lid, then I used the Glamour cake liner dry on the crease.  I followed with Glitz on the crease and down onto the lid.  Then I wet the cake liner with Face Atelier Transforming Gel and lined my upper lid.  I used Make Up For Ever Kohl Liner in black on my waterline.

cc eye

I used the cake liner as an eyeshadow – love multitaskers!

I used my Joey Healy Brow Architect Stylo in Molasses for my eyebrows.

FOD

My LM/CC FOD…love acronyms!

Lips were Clarins 01 Bay Rose Lip Definer, Guerlain Levres Lips 02 gloss, and I used my Verge One Spiral Wand on my hair.  Wow, sounds like a lot of products, but it didn’t take long to apply and I was totally ready for my day.  I loved my combination of favorite go-to products, it’s always great when things turn out even better than you had hoped!  – Lisa

Beautiful brows with Joey Healy Brow Architect Stylo

The older I get, the more I realize what a difference well-groomed eyebrows can make.  Joey Healy, a premier eyebrow specialist and professional makeup artist in New York City, has created a really cool niche line that’s all about fabulous brows.

Joey Healy

Joey Healy believes it is essential to treat your eyebrows with the attention and products they deserve.  He set out to create a line of practical products that met all of the needs of his clients.  His eyebrow products are high quality, easy to use, and there is a color option that suits every brow.

Joey Healy Brow Architect Stylo

I tried the Brow Architect Stylo ($25).  I love two-in-one products like this.  One side is a retractable waterproof pencil that doesn’t need sharpening.  The other side is a brow spoolie.

Gorgeous packaging

I was really impressed with the super-chic packaging.  The stylo comes in a beautiful faux-leather bag.  And it was more than a pretty package, the product inside is quite impressive.

Love!!

I am super picky about my brow spoolies.  A weak spoolie without the right firmness is tantamount to nails on a chalkboard for me.  The spoolie on the Brow Architect Stylo met all of my requirements – it’s firm, yet pliable enough to be comfortable on the brow.  Love it!

Before you use the pencil side, brush your eyebrows upward.  Then you can trim them if need be, and pluck any errant hairs before defining with the pencil side.

Molasses

Once you have your brows brushed and stray hairs cleaned up, use the pencil side to define and intensify your eyebrow color.  Be sure to choose a color that is a little lighter than your natural one (unless you have super blonde eyebrows that disappear on your face – in that case, you want to go a little darker).  I chose Molasses, one of five color options,  for my medium brown eyebrows.  Molasses is a neutral chocolate-brown that can be intensified with more pressure.

Molasses swatch

You want to use the pencil with short, light strokes, like you are drawing in hairs.  This will give you a natural look, and after applying the pencil brush your eyebrows through again with the spoolie to blend it all in.

The trend this fall is for thicker, arched brows.  You can definitely go for some drama and create that look using the Brow Architect Stylo if you want.  But I like it to slightly intensify my natural arch and color.  This is a great brow product, and I think it’s going to be a staple in my collection.  I’m impressed, and I can’t wait to try Joey Healy’s other brow products.  – Lisa
