Top 5 homemade skin care treatments with coconut oil

Nutiva collageSince I write about beauty for a living, I spend a lot of time researching skin care ingredients and how they affect the skin and body. I am also fascinated with ingredients that work from the inside out, like vitamins and foods that help create a strong body and a beautiful complexion.  I’ve started incorporating coconut oil into my diet in place of butter, shortening, and vegetable oil because it does three things:  1.  is easily processed by the liver into lots of energy; 2.  protects the body from infections, heart disease, and illness; and 3.  helps you lose weight.  Not only that, it tastes terrific.  So when Nutiva sent us their Coconut Oil (15 fl. oz $11.99), I was already happy – but not as happy as I became when I realized what a great ingredient it is for topical skin care.

Nutiva Coconut Oil - organic and sustainable

Nutiva Coconut Oil – organic and sustainable

Coconut oil is solid at lower temperatures, and liquefies at temps above 76 degrees farenheit.  I find it’s best for skin care recipes when it is at that ‘almost about to melt’ stage.  I’ve tried tons of recipes for face masks, body scrubs, face cleansers, and hair treatments, and these are my top five favorites. Be sure to use organic and raw ingredients when you can!

1.  Coconut oil hand and body scrub

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 tablespoons honey, 1/4 cup sea salt, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Mix together and use this in the shower or just leave it next to the sink for a quick hand scrub.  It leaves hands super soft and moisturized.

2.  Moisturizing coconut oil facial mask

2 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon honey, 1/2 mashed avocado

Mix together and apply immediately.  Leave it on for 20 – 30 minutes then rinse off.  This gives skin a great glow!

3.  Coconut oil facial cleanser

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 drops tea tree oil, 2 drops lavender oil – add some lemon juice if your skin is oily or prone to blackheads

This mixture dissolves even the most tenacious makeup and leaves skin hydrated.  Be sure to avoid the eye area – use straight coconut oil to remove eye makeup.  It’s the best.

4.  Coconut oil foot scrub

3 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon brown sugar.

After scrubbing and rinsing off this scrub, apply straight coconut oil to feet then cover with socks – in the morning your feet will be amazingly soft.

5.  Coconut oil hair mask

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tablespoon honey – double the recipe for long hair.  Heat the mixture up on the stove for a great hot oil treatment.  Apply to dry hair from roots to ends, cover with a shower cap and let soak in for a half hour.  Then, shampoo and condition like normal and you will be astounded at how soft and shiny your hair has become.

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Coconut oil by itself makes a great eye cream, lip moisturizer, and makeup remover!  I particularly like Nutiva Coconut Oil because it is:

  • Organic
  • Non-GMO
  • Virgin
  • Non-hydrogenated
  • No cholesterol
  • Made from fresh coconuts

Give homemade skin care treatments a try.  It’s a lot of fun, and the results are fabulous.  With the holidays coming up, homemade skin care treatments in cute little jars make great gifts (except for the one with avocado – that has to be used immediately).  Believe me, coconut oil is going to become your best friend, both in recipes for food and in recipes for skin care.  - Lisa

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo Oil Treatment

I remember when I was a kid green hair was a common problem. Hair got bleached out by the sun and then swimming in lakes and pools slowly turned locks a freakish-looking green by the end of August. We had no clue how to prevent this…and when I got older I experienced similar summer issues with color fading and dryness. Leonor Greyl sent the BIZ the perfect answer for all summer hair protection issues:  Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo Oil Treatment ($57).

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo is a blend of different oils that is applied to dry hair. It can be a simple pre-shampoo treatment or it can be used as a protectant before swimming, surfing, or going into the sun. The oil is a combination of refined copra oil that comes from cold-pressed coconut kernels, and mongono oil, which is extracted from the nuts of an African tree found in the Kalahari Desert.

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo

The oil has a wonderfully light, clean scent. It’s very easy to apply, just pour some oil into hands and smooth through hair. Then, go out and swim/sun/scuba to your hearts content and hair is protected from all the chlorine, salt, and UVA/B rays. The oil won’t just dissolve off when you dive into the pool or ocean as it protects hair from water to a temperature of 77 degrees. So in those cooler waters, the oil stays on beautifully. Later, just rinse out before shampooing. This PreShampoo oil is a must-have if you are a big outdoors person!

It’s also a must-have for those with colored, bleached, straightened, or dry hair. Putting this on for ten minutes before shampooing softens and detangles hair. It’s a beautiful treatment and some nights I put it on before bed for a great head of hair the next day.

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo is a cult classic and for good reason. If you have never tried this elegant haircare line before, I would recommend starting with this truly amazing product.  - Lisa

Side by Side: Coolway Hair

Coolway

Coolway is a haircare company dedicated to helping you have smooth hair on a daily basis but without damaging your hair. They do this with some unique products including a new Low Heat Flat Iron Smoothing System that detects the moisture level in your hair and keeps the temperature at a level that will protect it. “By replacing high heat tools with innovative low heat technology, the °Coolway System has won six beauty awards, including the prestigious Allure Breakthrough Product of the Year Award.” (from Coolway)

We were sent some of their styling products and we’re having a ball with them. All have been mentioned on the blog before since we’ve been enjoying them ever since we received them. Today we want to go into a little more detail on products so you can see why we enjoy them.

Coolway Knotty Girl Brush

Coolway Knotty Girl Brush

We’ve both use and love the Knotty Girl brush ($9.95). This is a great brush for everyone in your family but it’s especially great for those of us that want to gently brush wet hair. It absolutely does not tug. It would be perfect to put in a beach bag to tame your tresses when you get out of the water. It does wonders on hair fresh from the shower since it doesn’t pull your hair out, it just loosens it as you brush.

We’ve got two other Coolway products so let’s learn about those.

Marcia and True Smooth Spray

Coolway True Smooth Spray

Coolway True Smooth Spray

The goal of True Smooth Spray ($34.95) is to help you end up with smooth hair that does not need a flat iron. We are hard enough on our hair with blowdryers and endless products. Coolway created this spray to protect and condition your hair so that you can eliminate a flat iron.

It’s so easy to use, you shake it and then spray it very liberally on your hair. Just using this spray and a blow dryer will work towards any texture hair straight. I’ve done that several times but my preferred way is to take a very small amount of a hair balm or serum and apply that on my hair, then shake and spray True Smooth Spray over it. It has a long lasting fragrance that isn’t overpowering. I can’t place my finger on it but I love it which is quite unusual for me. I have been able to blow dry my hair more quickly and be done because it’s totally styled using this. The spray is quite lightweight and doesn’t contain ingredients that weigh it down. My hair feels smooth without flyaways when I use it either alone in with another product.

This is meant to be used with a hair dryer because it contains True Smooth’s AminoLock MAB molecule (patent-pending molecule which holds your hairstyle safely from inside the cuticle as you blow dry) which is heat activated. You can also use it with a flat iron on dry hair as a heat protectant but it’s best to use with one that is under 300 degrees (most other brand flat irons start at 350 degrees).

Follow up with Glow Finishing Oil for something special.

Lisa and Glow Finishing Oil:

°Coolway’s Glow™ ($29.95), the companion product to the True Smooth Spray, is the second half of the dynamic duo. However, it also plays well by itself and with other products.

Coolway GlowFinishingOil

Coolway’s Glow™ is a finishing oil that doesn’t have any sulfates, synthetic parabens, or alcohol. While it’s great for all hair types, I think it is especially terrific for color-treated or damaged hair, and if you get treatments like Brazillian Blow Outs this is just perfect. It leaves hair shiny and vibrant.

Coolway Glow

Coolway Glow

The formula includes vitamin E and porphyra seaweed extract, both of which are great for putting moisture into hair. Surprisingly, it does not contain silicones, which I know will make a lot of people happy. The finishing oil leaves my hair looking smooth and healthy, with no frizz at all. It also detangles and softens. So far, this summer has been hot and humid, yet my hair is happy thanks to Coolway’s Glow. It is pricey, but you don’t need a lot of product so it lasts a long time.

Coolway’s website has a Frequently Asked Question section that helps you learn all you need to know about these great products. Be sure to visit.

Going extreme with Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Shampoo, Conditioner, and Elasticizer Extreme

In my continual quest for super soft floaty hair, I have turned to Philip Kingsley.  Philip Kingsley takes dull, dry, damaged hair and turns it into lush, swingy hair that could be the star of a commercial. The difference is definitely extreme!

We were sent the Elasticizer Extreme ($45), Moisture Extreme Shampoo ($28), and Moisture Extreme Conditioner ($32).

Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Elasticizer

Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Elasticizer

inside Elasticizer Extreme

inside Elasticizer Extreme

The Elasticizer Extreme is actually used first, prior to shampooing and conditioning. The instructions say to apply to wet hair before shampooing and leave it on for at least two minutes. This gives great results! I sometimes use it as regular conditioner after shampooing, and it is a wonderful deeper treatment without much extra time. I use it on dry hair with even better results. I smooth on a thick coat of it then put my hair up and leave it for as long as possible. It starts out like very thick conditioner, but then it becomes almost waxy. I rinse it out then shampoo and condition and the result is truly amazing hair.

Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner

Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner

And I just can’t rave enough about the Philip Kingsley Moisture Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner. This great combo gives thirsty hair exactly what it needs. The shampoo cleans thoroughly but gently. Key ingredients include Sodium Cocoa Butter Amphaocetate that cleans while moisturing and conditioning; Guar Hydroxly Propyl Trimonium Chloride to make hair easy to comb either wet or dry; and Oligoquat M to smooth the hair cuticle. The conditioner is fabulously moisturizing, with Almond Oil for shine; Wheat Germ Oil and Avocado Oil for nutrients and minerals; and Babassu Oil to eliminate static and deeply conditioner hair.

Together these two products give unbelievable hair. Throw in the Elasticizer Extreme and the results are extremely unbelievable.

Leonor Greyl’s Four Step Hair Loss Treatment Regimen

Men aren’t the only ones who can suffer from hair loss. I know that as I get older I seem to have less and less hair – not in patches like the top of my hubby’s head (which he insists is just a cowlick…sure, honey, it’s a cowlick. You just keep telling yourself that.) Instead, my hair seems to just get thinner all over. Leonor Greyl sent us four products from their cruelty-free and eco-friendly regimen for hair loss and I tested them for several months with great results.

Leonor Greyl Hair Loss Treatment Collection

Leonor Greyl Hair Loss Treatment Collection

There are four steps (and five products) to Leonor Greyl’s hair loss treatment regimen:  purify, cleanse, treat, and maintain.   Following these four steps will not only help you fight against further hair loss, they will also increase the amount of hair you have. And here is some really good news:  right now, you can get all five products for $189, whereas separately you would pay $237.

The hair loss treatment regimen minimizes hair loss through plant extracts, oils, and nutrients. The regimen also has the added benefit of leaving hair wonderfully soft and shiny. All the products are safe to use with colored hair and are free of SLS, parabens, and silicone. The products energize your scalp and make hair super strong.

Leonor

Leonor Greyl Regenerescence Naturelle

Leonor

Leonor Greyl Regenerescence Naturelle

The first step is to PURIFY with the scalp treatment Regenerescence Naturelle ($60). It has essential and botanical oils that stimulate and clean the scalp, which helps hair grow. I put this on prior to showering, massaging it into my dry scalp then wrapping a towel around my head. I leave it on for at least 15 minutes, although sometimes I do leave it on overnight. The dropper makes it easy to apply and the results are terrific. It leaves my scalp feeling fabulous and I am very happy with my thicker hair.

Leonor

Leonor Greyl Shampooing Au Miel

Leonor

Leonor Greyl Shampooing Au Miel

The second step is to CLEANSE, and the Shampooing Au Miel ($32) is the perfect product for the job. I use this all the time and it’s very gentle yet effective. It leaves hair with lots of volume, shine, and bounce. The light scent from the acacia honey and rose extracts is fresh and pleasant.

All the info

The third step is to TREAT the hair. There are two products that are included in the Leonor Greyl Hair Loss Treatment Regimen for treatment: Complexe Energisant ($56) and Tonique Vivifiant ($43).

The Complexe Energisant is a leave-in treatment that tackles pretty much every issue that results in hair loss. The effective ingredients include mimosa tenuiflora and collagen, both of which stimulate hair growth. I use one vial a week since my hair loss is ‘moderate’, while those with more serious hair loss would use up to three vials per week. This is applied to a clean scalp after washing, just prior to drying and styling the hair.

Leonor

Leonor Greyl Tonique Vivifiant

Also part of the treatment step is Tonique Vivifiant, a leave-in treatment spray. This complements the other products and helps to fight hair loss, keeping hair strong and healthy. This treatment, which also has mimosa tenuiflora and collagen, is sprayed into towel-dried hair.

Included in the Hair Loss Treatment Regimen is one more product that I did not test, the Volumizing Styling Mousse, which completes the fourth step of MAINTAINING healthy hair. While I didn’t use that product, I can definitely say that the four products I did test were pretty fabulous.  If you have issues with thinning hair, I definitely recommend trying out the Leonor Greyl Hair Loss Treatment Regimen.  - Lisa

Adding vibrant and radiant color that lasts with AG Hair’s new BB Cream and Deflect

Are there days that you look in the mirror and love the way your hair looks? Whenever I have days like that I want to stop time. Lately with the newest products from AG Hair I’ve been having a lot of those days. AG Hair’s new BB Cream Total Benefit Hair Primer and Deflect Fast Dry Heat Protection Spray were launched in salons on March 1st and I am thrilled to have been using them from the company for the last several weeks.

AG Hair - BB Cream and Deflect

AG Hair – BB Cream and Deflect

AG Hair is a favorite of both Lisa and I. These two new products are part of the Colour Care line that helps keep hair vibrant and radiant.  What attracts us to pictures of stars in magazines is their shiny hair and with these two products we can all strive for that too. I’m the person that started going gray very young. I’ve been coloring my hair to cover roots since I was in my late twenties and my poor sister started even earlier. I know that if I let my roots grow out I’d have white hair by now but that’s not going to happen if I have anything to say about it. That’s why I am always looking for products that keep my color lasting longer like these two from AG Hair. AG Hair’s Colour Care line uses a special CARE Complex (Colour and Radiance Enhancing) that contains herbal extracts like sunflower seed extract, marigold, lavender, red clover, pine and carnation to combat color destroying free radicals.

AG Hair BB Cream, Total Benefit Hair Primer

AG Hair BB Cream, Total Benefit Hair Primer

Let’s start with the BB Cream, Total Benefit Hair Primer. Who knew that we’d need a hair primer? I just wrote an article for Top Ten Tuesday about facial primers and eyeshadow primers and easily could have included this BB Cream in that article if I wanted to discuss about hair primers. Wash and condition your hair as always, then prime it with BB Cream. According to the company this unique formula fills the hair cuticle and primes your hair for layering on styling products. It creates a smooth base while containing antioxidants like acai, goji berry, and pomegranate. It adds fabulous moisture. My hair is looking fuller and bouncier.

AG Hair BB Cream, enough for my shoulder length hair

AG Hair BB Cream, enough for my shoulder length hair

Look at all the benefits of AG Hair BB Cream:

1. fills uneven hair cuticle
2. thickens hair
3. moisturizes and smoothes frizz
4. adds silkiness
5. protects against colour fading with AG’s CARE Complex
6. protects against UV rays
7. protects against damage from heat styling tools
8. anti-aging – reduces brittleness
9. humidity-resistant
10. primes hair to maintain styles longer between shampoos

AG Hair Deflect, Fast-Dry Heat Protection

AG Hair Deflect, Fast-Dry Heat Protection

The other new product is Deflect, Fast Dry Heat Protection Spray which is infused with Abyssinian oil to detangle. It’s to be applied prior to heat styling your hair to shield it while at the same time protecting your color. Heat tools like our blow dryers, flattening irons, curling irons as well as the sun do a lot of damage to our color. Deflect helps combat the free radicals and shields hair from UV rays. When you are paying big bucks for hair color – not even counting the time it takes – you want to do all that you can to make the color last as long as possible.

Here’s how this wonderful product works: “When hair is wet, round, dense droplets of water sit on the surface of the hair shaft and require prolonged heat to evaporate. In Deflect, micro emulsified Abyssinian oil encourages the water droplets to collapse and lie flat, increasing the surface area of water available to heat. The result is water that evaporates rapidly and hair that dries significantly faster.”

Deflect, Fast-Dry Heat Protection Spray

Deflect, Fast-Dry Heat Protection Spray

I’m always changing up my routine with AG Hair BB Cream and Deflect. I use one every time I do my hair and sometimes I use both. Today for example I put a quarter size amount of BB Cream in the palm of my hand, rubbed my two hands together and spread it through my hair. I L.O.V.E. how my hair looks today. Other days I do the same with the BB Cream but then before blow drying I’ll spray on Deflect since it helps dry my hair a little faster as well as protects it from the heat. Other days I just use Deflect. Since I only have time to wash my hair 3 times a week I’ll sometimes use my straightening iron. Deflect is my new protection against that strong heat.

There’s so much for me to love about these two products as well as the rest of the AG Hair line. It’s been at least 8 months since I had a keratin treatment but I still only use products that would be safe for it so as not to leach out the remainder. That means sulfate free, no parabens, no salt (sodium chloride) – all aspects of AG Hair and especially their Colour Care line. In addition the products are cruelty free. That’s not all, AG Hair also donates a portion of every bottle sold towards building schools for girls in Africa through their Women Leading Change Foundation. So you can have beautiful hair that makes you feel like a million bucks and helps others out.

The beauty salon where I get my hair color treated carries AG Hair and I’ve talked to my hairdresser about the line. She is one of the owners and this is a company she trusts for her clientele. AG Hair BB Cream is $26 and Deflect is $24. They are both products you should inquire about at your salon. They are that good.

What we’ll all look like with AG Hair BB Cream and Deflect

AG Hair is a Canadian company that has only been selling in the US for about 2 years. In that time they’ve made a wonderful impression on both of us at Beauty Info Zone. I believe in every product I’ve tried from them and hope you’ll get a chance to find these at your salon too. — Marcia

Argan Oil 7 Moisture Healing Mask by Nelson j Beverly Hills

Super soft, floaty hair that smells of delicious coconut…that is what I was envisioning when Nelson j Beverly Hills sent the BIZ their newly launched deep conditioner, the Argan Oil 7 Moisture Healing Mask ($20).  Nelson j is the fascinating haircare line created by celebrity colorist Nelson Chan, who also has a famous hair salon in Los Angeles.  If you read Allure or InStyle you probably recognize the name because they regularly feature Nelson and his salon. Nelson is known for eco-friendly products, natural and non-toxic hair coloring, formaldehyde-free Brazilian straightening treatments and fantastic haircuts.

Nelson j

Argan Oil 7 Moisture Healing Mask comes in three all natural scents:  coconut, pomegranate, and rosemary mint. I tried the coconut, and the scent is DIVINE. It’s a deep, rich coconut that lasts on my hair so I keep sneaking sniffs of it all day long.  The hair mask is a 100% argan-oil based, deep conditioning treatment that truly hydrates and moisturizes even the most dry and damaged hair.
I use it a few different ways, depending on how much time I have. If I can, I like to put this on towel dried hair then wrap it back up, leaving it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing. The results are amazing. If I don’t have time, I use it as a regular conditioner, putting it on in the shower after shampooing then rinsing after a minute or two. Just this gives me wonderfully soft, scented, beautiful hair that doesn’t need any styling products.
NelsonJ

the deliciously coconut scented hair mask

I haven’t tried this next technique yet, but I will for sure this summer: To protect hair from chlorine and salt water damage, apply the mask before swimming onto damp hair from root to ends, without rinsing. Works on all hair types, especially dry, damaged hair.

The main ingredients in this phenomenal hair mask include argan, citrus and peppermint oils. It has NO sulfates, parabens, or artificial fragrances. It’s really perfect for cool, dry weather because it is such marvelous hydration.

If you have dry, color-treated, or damaged hair, you will want to check this out. The Argan Oil 7 Moisture Healing Mask is an outrageously terrific hair mask that should be in your shower.  - Lisa
