Makeup Wars is all about hair – Living Proof and Brazilian Blowout Acai are my choices

We are a confusing bunch around here. Last week for Top Ten Beauty we talked about hair and this week for Makeup Wars we are also talking about hair. I’m actually glad because I mixed them up and now I get to add more hair products that I use all the time.

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

Brazilian Blowout Acai and Living Proof NoFrizz

First thing to know about me is that I get my hair professionally straightened. I recently had another Brazilian Blowout procedure done, at least my 6th one. At the present time I’m only using the Acai line made by Brazilian Blowout but that will change in about a month. Prior to that I was using Pai-Shau and Living Proof. There are two things that you need to make sure are absent from your hair products whenever you have it straightened: they must be sulfate-free and have no sodium chloride. The sodium pulls the straightening out of your hair so that it doesn’t last. I watch for that in all products I use but especially during the first 6 weeks after a treatment.

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products

Brazilian Blowout Acai products are specially formulated for a keratin treatment. They are the aftercare regimen developed to extend the life of your Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatment. Even if you have another brand of treatment done, I’d still recommend these products since they do the job they are formulated to do: keep your hair straight, frizz free, smooth and silky looking.

Both the shampoo and conditioner are products I’d use 365 days a year. I find they keep my hair from drying out. My hair retains moisture because they contain smoothing proteins that fortify and seal the cuticle.

Brazilian Blowout Acai Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Condtioner

The conditioner provides UVA/UVB protection and is safe for color-treated hair. This is a mild everyday conditioner that glides through my hair.

All the Brazilian Blowout Acai products have a light citrus fragrance that doesn’t linger but I’d love it if it did since it’s so pleasant.

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque

The Brazilian Blowout Acai Deep Conditioning Masque is to be used approximately once a week. My hair is shorter now than when I first started having my hair straightened so I find I only need this about every 10 days. My hairdresser swears by the Deep Conditioning Masque and uses it instead of the conditioner. She has beautiful thick hair that always looks lustrous and healthy. This masque not only smoothes and conditions, it promotes shine while also infusing moisture in your hair. The masque is what’s going to help with the longevity of a keratin treatment.

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Acai Daily Smoothing Serum

Brazilian Blowout has created several products to help style your hair. My favorite of these is the Acai Daily Smoothing Serum. I always have to put in a styling product before I brush through my wet hair and this one is great. It’s clear and not too thick, has that luscious citrus scent, and helps detangle my wet hair. This is what keeps my hair looking shiny and fights the humidity.

I’ve repurchased these products over and over. I use Amazon since I save a bundle over what my hair salon sells it for. My Deep Conditioning Masque is the newest of my replacement products so it has the new packaging.

Living Proof No Frizz

Living Proof No Frizz

Another brand that I’m crazy about is Living Proof. I use the FRIZZ line which is the No Frizz line. Sephora had several samples available of Living Proof so I took advantage of those to see what I thought of the line. Once I got the samples of No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, I was sold. Living Proof is available at Ulta, Sephora and Amazon but I find that the prices on Amazon are much better so that’s where my replacements will come from. And I will replace these products since they’ve giving me living proof that they work well.

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo

Living Proof No Frizz information

Living Proof No Frizz information

Both Living Proof FRIZZ shampoo and conditioner sold me when I saw that they were color safe, sulfate-free, and contained no heavy silicones or oils. I can add an oil I like when styling but that’s my choice. The first new anti-frizz technology in over 30 years, it does what silicones can’t; eliminate frizz by blocking humidity-without weighing hair down.” This shampoo’s key ingredient is PolyfluoroEster which creates an invisible shield on the hair to lock in moisture-proof smoothness and repel dirt and oil, so you can go longer between washes to break the frizz and damage cycle.

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

I chose to buy Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream as the product to use after washing my hair. I always need something to comb through so I’ll be tangle free. While it’s more expensive than their Frizz Leave In Conditioner, it has more benefits.

No Frizz derives performance from Living Proof’s “miracle molecule,” PolyfluoroEster, to create a weightless shield on hair that blocks humidity absorption, smooths the cuticle, and repels dirt. The PolyfluoroEster shield is established over the first five uses of the No Frizz regimen, so it becomes stronger, the longer you use it—and can be maintained with consistent use of No Frizz products.

That’s the reason I chose the Nourishing Styling Cream. I need so little that it doesn’t matter that it’s a little more money. Plus it really works. In the winter when I knew I was coming towards the end of my treatment, this is what kept my hair from misbehaving.

In the future I’ll be exploring more from Living Proof. I actually have a travel set of A Perfect Day that I will break into in the future. Until then I plan to continue my FRIZZ routine.

Stock up your shower with drugstore finds from Aveeno

AveenoOne of the coolest things about blogging is discovering awesome finds at terrific prices. I have a few favorite drugstore lines and AVEENO® is one of them.

I am sad for all the years I didn’t know about this great brand, but Marcia and I have been AVEENO® brand ambassadors for years now and we are very proud of this. Over the years I have found many must-have products from this sensitive skin-friendly brand, and today I want to tell you about three staples to stock up on for a super shower.

*pr samples

Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner, Daily Moisturizing Body Wash

Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner, Daily Moisturizing Body Wash

The AVEENO® PURE RENEWAL® hair products have an ingredient called ACTIVE NATURALS® SEAWEED EXTRACT.  It’s full of vitamins, proteins, and minerals that clean hair without leaving it dried out, conditioning and balancing it to perfection. The AVEENO® PURE RENEWAL® SHAMPOO (10.5 fl.oz., $6.49) is a great shampoo that indeed leaves hair super clean but still soft and shiny. It is sulfate free, so while it doesn’t have a ton of foam it still does a wonderful job even on color treated hair.

Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner

The sister conditioner, AVEENO® PURE RENEWAL® CONDITIONER (10.5 fl.oz., $6.49) is a conditioner for those who don’t need tons of moisture weighing down hair. It’s especially good for oily or fine hair, since it’s light but still hydrates and gives hair shine. If you have very dry ends or lots of frizz, you will probably want something heavier. Otherwise, this is a terrific every day, workhorse conditioner.

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash

A shower isn’t complete with shampoo and conditioner – you also need a perfect body wash. I love AVEENO® body washes because they have ACTIVE NATURALS® COLLOIDAL OATMEAL, which is fantastic for all kinds of skin, even the most sensitive. Colloidal oatmeal protects and soothes skin and it has tons of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. I think the body wash to get – especially for guest bathrooms to accommodate any skin care needs – is the AVEENO® DAILY MOISTURIZING BODY WASH (12 fl.oz., $6.99). No kidding, this is a stand out drugstore product. It has a very light fragrance and the ingredients include the colloidal oatmeal plus a blend of natural oils and emollients that clean skin beautifully while also soothing and refreshing. All skin types will love this soap free, dye free and hypoallergenic body wash. It rinses clean and is truly one of the best body washes I have ever tried.
I recently visited a friend who is beyond wealthy and while she has all sorts of products from very expensive lines, every shower in her house had nothing but AVEENO® products — for very good reason!  Next time you are at the drugstore, stock up on AVEENO® PURE RENEWAL® SHAMPOOCONDITIONER, and DAILY MOISTURIZING BODY WASH. They are perfect for your guests and perfect for you, too.  – Lisa

Two drugstore hair saviors you need now: The Conair Dry Shampoo Brush and the Scunci

Conair Dry Hair Brush and Scunci Hair Emergency Kit

Conair Dry Hair Brush and Scunci Hair Emergency Kit

Got a hair emergency?  There are two awesome drugstore products that will never let you down!    PR samples

Scunci Hair Emergency Kit

Scunci Hair Emergency Kit

Scunci Hair Emergency Kit

Scunci Hair Emergency Kit

1.  The Scunci Hair Emergency Kit ($7) has saved me many times over.  The cute little zippered gray bag holds so much it’s almost like a magic trick.  The kit includes bobby pins, elastics, headwraps, a jaw clip and polybands.  Pretty much everything you need for any hair emergency you might encounter, including oversleeping, a sudden rainstorm, and that horrible moment when you discover the back of your hair (which you forgot to check before you left that morning) is an embarrassing disaster.

Conair Dry Hair Brush

Conair Dry Hair Brush

2.  Let’s put this one into the ‘I never knew I needed this, but now I will never be without it’ file – the Conair Dry Shampoo Brush ($7).

I use dry shampoo all the time.  I have long, color-treated hair that can’t take being washed every day…but second and third day hair is not kind to my bangs.  They go all limp and look greasy.  So I use dry shampoo to spruce them up – I spray along my hair-line all the way around as well as on my part.  Sometimes I will use dry shampoo on first day hair for a little more texture and volume.  And sometimes I use it because I am, as usual, running late and I just don’t have time for anything but hair triage.

Conair Dry Shampoo Brush

Dry shampoo is awesome, but it has drawbacks if it’s not applied properly.  Most dry shampoos have a white cast, which is not good for someone with dark hair who is always trying to hide those tell-tale grey roots as it is.  That’s where the magic of the Conair Dry Shampoo Brush comes into play.

This brush has a combo of boar bristles and nylon bristles.  The boar bristles are on the inside of the brush, and they distribute the dry shampoo into the hair while brushing out the dirt and oil.  The nylon bristles on the outer portion lift up the hair and give it lots of volume.  So hair is lifted while the dry shampoo is evenly distributed, making those tell-tale white patches a thing of the past.

The Conair Dry Shampoo Brush is a nifty invention that is absolutely worth the extremely affordable price tag.  Pick up one of these babies for the best dry shampoo results possible.

Hair emergencies are going to happen, so you might as well remember the Girl Scout motto and be prepared – and these two drugstore finds are just what you need. – Lisa

Our Kenra Professional Hair Care experiences

One of the great things about being blog partners is that Lisa and I (Marcia) can share experiences and products. We are always gabbing back and forth over what we’ve used and what we love. We also insist that each other use products that we’ve fallen in love with.  That’s the case with KENRA PROFESSIONAL HAIR PRODUCTS. Lisa fell in love with the products she reviewed and insisted that I would love them too. Kenra happily shared more items with us which we appreciate.

MARCIA’S PRODUCTS

Kenra Daily Provision and Kenra Platinim Smoothing Creme

Kenra Daily Provision and Kenra Platinim Smoothing Creme

I was looking for styling products including something to protect my hair before flat ironing. I’ve had trouble finding something that wasn’t too wet since I didn’t want to fry my hair. I wanted something gentle without a heavy fragrance but that was powerful enough to hold up to a hot hair styling tool. KENRA DAILY PROVISION to the rescue. This leave-in conditioner was exactly what I was hoping it would be.

Kenra Daily Provision

Kenra Daily Provision

This $15 spray is double duty and when I can get everything I need in one handy item, I’m thrilled. I can spray this on my wet from the shower hair and it becomes the leave in that I need when I’m using my blow dryer. Or I can use it whenever I want before I style with any heated tool. It’s very lightweight but it does the job perfectly. It’s never too heavy, it’s never sticky, it protects against UV, color, and adds the thermal protection I’ve been seeking.

I love that it helps with humidity and frizz too. I don’t use dry shampoo very often so this is the type of refresher that I prefer. There’s a light fragrance that I notice at first only.

Super ingredient list:

  • Amodimethicone A water soluable silicone that imparts shine, manageability and anti-static properties.
  • Daily Provision Complex (Chamomile, Horse Chestnut, Sage. Nettle, Lemon Balm, Coltsfoot Leaf, Rosemary, Birch, and Horsetail) A complex that provides scalp soothing benefits, adds shine and moisture to hair and provides an uplifting aroma.
  • Cetrimonium Chloride A conditioning agent that detangles the hair and improves wet combing.
  • Hydrolyzed Silk Protein A protein that provides strength to hair.
  • Benzophenone-4 Sunscreen for UV protection from drying and color fade.
Kenra Platinum Smoothing Creme

Kenra Platinum Smoothing Creme

KENRA PLATINUM SMOOTHING CREME is the other product I’ve been using. It’s replaced my old favorites and it did that instantaneously. I can’t believe how smooth this makes my hair feel and how it helps with blow drying. It doesn’t take much to rub through my shoulder length hair. I’m able to comb through my hair quickly and easily once applied.

Kenra Platinum Smoothing Creme 3 short pumps

Kenra Platinum Smoothing Creme 3 short pumps

The Smoothing Creme is part of the Platinum line which is a salon sold line. It is available at drugstore.com but I had trouble finding anyplace else that sells it online. I recommend tracking it down if you love silky soft hair that stays clean for days. Using this your hair is protected from UV rays as well as the heat or your blow dryer and other heated tools. I use this after washing my hair and save Daily Provisions for the days I just style.

Super ingredients:

    • Dimethicone Silicone, hair conditioner.
    • Panthenol and Sodium PCA Provides moisture and restores shine.
    • Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride UV filter that helps to prevent damage and to preserve color. Also provides thermal protection from blow drying and curling irons

Kenra Hair Care

Kenra Hair Care

A while back I fell in love with my Kenra Platinum Thickening Glaze as well as the Thickening Glaze and I couldn’t stop raving about them to Marcia. I had very high expectations for the next three products I tried from Kenra and I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.

Kenra Hair Care

1.  Color Maintenance Shampoo for Color Treated Hair  ($23)  I love this shampoo because it cleans my hair and keeps my color looking fresh and bright. It does everything a great shampoo should do, including:

  • Gently cleanses and replenishes moisture without stripping hair color
  • Improves manageability and readily detangles
  • Helps to strengthen chemically challenged hair
  • Adds vibrance and shine
  • Great for all hair types
  • Helps extend the life of color/color safe
Ingredients like coconut oil-derived cleansers and botanical extracts protect hair color and this shampoo is a terrific match with the coordinating conditioner.

2.  Color Maintenance Conditioner for Color Treated Hair ($31) This is a bit of an oddball product. The texture really threw me off at first – it’s a little watery and very gritty. I have found that it’s helpful to shake the bottle before using and I have to say it has become one of my most favorite hair care products. It accomplishes a lot:

  • Gently cleanses and replenishes moisture without stripping hair color
  • Improves manageability and readily detangles
  • Helps to strengthen chemically challenged hair
  • Adds vibrance and shine
  • Great for all hair types
  • Helps extend the life of color/color safe
I think the grittiness is from the silk proteins that repair hair and calm any frizziness. Also, the emollients are perfect for smoothing and detangling color treated hair.

3.  Platinum Blow-Dry Spray ($22)  This smells fabulous….really clean and fresh. I normally don’t particularly like fragranced hair products, but this is one to buy just because it smells so perfect. Other pluses?  It helps my hair dry faster and is a great detangler. Here are all the benefits:

  • Dramatically decreases blow-dry time by 50%
  • Provides intense heat protection from damage and breakage
  • Lightweight formulation detangles, smoothes, and softens
  • Eliminates frizz and resists humidity
  • Provides long-lasting, healthy looking results
All together, my Kenra Professional Hair Care trio makes for a wonderful hair day every time I use them.  Marcia and I don’t just want to enlighten each other – we want our readers to join in on the secrets to the best products, and Kenra Professional Hair Care products are definitely ones to add to your must-try list!

Soft, swingy, sweet smelling hair with Carol’s Daughter Mirabelle Plum Shampoo and Conditioners

I am not usually a big fan of products with noticeable fragrance…I like my purposefully chosen perfume to be itself without having to compete with other scents that probably aren’t compatible. But I am in love with the Mirabelle Plum hair products from Carol’s Daughter and the plum scent is one of the main reasons.

Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum Shampoo and Conditioner

Carol’s Daughter Mirabelle Plum Shampoo and Conditioner

*pr sample

Not that these products aren’t fabulous for my hair in general. The Mirabelle Plum Sulfate Free Shampoo and Conditioner ($22) come together in a ‘Health Duo’. The shampoo is for fine, dry hair, and even though it doesn’t have those drying sulfates it still gives a nice foam. It leaves my hair full, soft, and moisturized. The conditioner really hydrates but it doesn’t weigh down my fine hair. And the plum scent is FANTASTIC. Plus it really sticks around…it’s one of those where all day long people comment on how nice my hair smells. It makes for a great moment when I get a quick whiff, too. The ingredients include Mirabelle Plums, biotin, grapeseed oil, aloe leaf juice, and sweet almond oil. The result is awesome, especially for dry ends and fine hair.

Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum Biotin Hair Mask

Carol’s Daughter Mirabelle Plum Biotin Hair Mask

When my hair is feeling especially dry, I use the shampoo and the Mirabelle Plum Biotin Hair Mask ($14). This is an even thicker version of the conditioner and it does some serious repair to dry ends. I end up using this once a week for some extra hydration.

Carol's Daughter Mirabelle Plum Leave-in Biotin Conditioner

Carol’s Daughter Mirabelle Plum Leave-in Biotin Conditioner

The Mirabelle Plum Leave-in Biotin Conditioner ($11) is probably my favorite of all the Mirabelle Plum hair products. It’s a spray in that’s applied to damp hair before blow drying and styling, and it is fabulous. No silicones weigh down hair, but it strengthens, detangles, and really gives my hair tons of body. The plum scent, again, is to die for. Love it!

If you haven’t tried Carol’s Daughter hair products, I definitely recommend these, especially for fine, dry, or thin hair.  Be sure to pick some up, and believe me you are going to love the yummy plum scent.  – Lisa

The recipe for a perfect blowout with Kenra Professional Hair Care

Kenra Professional Hair Care

Kenra Professional Hair Care

The search for a perfect blowout never ends. Why is it that my hair looks so amazing when my hairstylist blows it dry, but it’s such a challenge for me to get the same results at home? Kenra Professional Hair Care recently launched some new products at Ulta that make it easy for me to recreate a great salon blowout that lasts all day. Here are the three Kenra Professional styling products that make up the recipe for a perfect blowout:

Kenra Platinum Thickening Glaze

Kenra Platinum Thickening Glaze

1.  Kenra Platinum Thickening Glaze ($22)  Maybe it’s the shape of the bottle, but for some reason I kept thinking this was a spray and tried to mist it onto my hair. It probably took me three times before it finally sunk in that this is a hair SERUM, not a spray! My hair is very long and fine so it needs help with volume without being weighed down. I find that the Thickening Glaze does a great job of giving my hair oomph by making it look fuller with lots of body. It’s also very moisturizing, so my dry ends are much happier when I use this.

Kenra Perfect Blowout Styling Creme

Kenra Perfect Blowout Styling Creme

2.  Kenra Perfect Blowout Crème ($17)  I LOVE LOVE LOVE this styling cream!  It leaves my hair so soft and full…it truly makes for a salon-worthy blowout. I don’t even need to use my flat iron because this cream smooths the hair shaft without making my fine hair limp with weight. If I did want to use my styling tools this cream would be a bonus, because it gives thermal protection up to 450 degrees. Combined with the Thickening Glaze I know I am in for a great hair day. To keep the look all day long I add in one more ‘perfect blowout’ ingredient, the Fast-Dry Hairspray.

Get a perfect blowout with the dynamic trio from Kenra Professional Hair Care!

Get a perfect blowout with the dynamic trio from Kenra Professional Hair Care!

3.  Kenra Fast Dry Hairspray ($17) is an impressive hairspray that doesn’t have a ‘hairspray’ scent and doesn’t get all flaky or crunchy. I have a problem with hairspray build up and I can’t stand a spray that makes my hair stiff. At the same time. with my probably too-long layers. my style goes flat after a few hours if I don’t use something with substantial holding power. It’s so difficult to find a happy medium, but Kenra’s Fast Dry Hairspray definitely does the trick. The spray comes out super fine, and this can be used as a prepping spray for styling tools since it gives thermal protection up to 450 degrees. It doesn’t build up or change hair texture, so when I use the Thickening Glaze and the Perfect Blowout Styling Creme on damp hair, then spray my blown dry ‘do with the Fast Dry Hairspray, I end up with incredibly smooth, soft, volumized hair that lasts all day long.

I am very, very impressed with Kenra Professional and definitely want to try more from this line.  If you are always on the hunt for a perfect blowout, I think this trio from Kenra will be your answer.  You can find Kenra at Ulta Stores and Ulta.com.  – Lisa

Let your individual style shine through with Wella EIMI #beautybrands

Wella EIMIIt’s been forever since I’ve tried the Wella brand but I certainly remember it was a big favorite back in the day.  Recently Beauty Brands sent me several products to test from the new Wella EIMI hair care collection. The EIMI collection is all about helping you express your individuality through your hair, with styling products that range from smoothing serums to maximum hold hairsprays.

Wella Root Shoot

Wella Root Shoot Precise Root Mousse

The coolest product of the four I tested is the Wella EIMI Root Shoot Precise Root Mousse ($19).

Lifts roots
– Gives hair natural-looking body
– Offers low to medium hold
– Has precise spray applicator
– Easy to use

This is a volumizing mousse that truly gives hair lots of body and lift. The ‘precision applicator’ nozzle is small so you can point it directly at your roots when hair is damp. Then, just smooth it in, and blow dry – or even air dry – for a nice body boost. It even works on long hair without layers. Great stuff.

Wella Dry Me Dry Shampoo

Wella Dry Me Dry Shampoo

I love dry shampoo so I was very excited to test the Wella EIMI Dry Me Dry Shampoo ($19).

Refreshes hair
– Absorbs oil
– Adds volume
– Provides a matte texture
– Offers Hold Level 1
– Contains tapioca starch

What I like about this dry shampoo is it not only absorbs oil so I don’t have to shampoo as often, it doesn’t leave hair stiff with too much texture. Plus it’s a nice big bottle so it doesn’t run out quickly.

Wella Sugar Lift Sugar Spray

Wella Sugar Lift Sugar Spray

I have tried many, many salt sprays, but a sugar spray? Something totally new to me. Wella EIMI Sugar Lift Sugar Spray For Voluminous Texture ($19) is a light spray that –

Has high holding power
– Boosts body and volume for lifted locks
– Texturizes hair
– Leaves hair shiny
– Made with sugar that doesn’t weigh hair down

I think it works best on wavy or curly hair for more body and texture.  It doesn’t give that dry, sort of crunchy texture that salt sprays do. It’s more of a shiny, softer texture that doesn’t weigh down fine hair. It can be used on damp or dry hair, although for me I get the best results on damp hair that I then scrunch for soft, pretty waves.

Wella Perfect Me Lightweight BB Lotion

Wella Perfect Me Lightweight BB Lotion

Ok, so a BB lotion for hair? Wella EIMI Perfect Me Lightweight BB Lotion ($19) is a hair serum that –

Infuses dry hair with moisture
– Repairs damaged strands
– smooths strands
– Tames flyaways
– Boosts shine
– Protects hair from heat styling

Similar to a BB cream for skin, this BB lotion seems to do a little bit of everything. It moisturizes hair, smooths frizziness, and protects it from heat styling.  It doesn’t give any hold but it does pamper hair!

The Wella from back in the day has definitely changed and is now a real player in the hair styling arena. Head on over to Beauty Brands to take a look at the EIMI line, as well as tons of other makeup, skin care, and bath and body lines.  – Lisa
