Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder

LISA’S GRAY SIDE:

Gray hair. The bane of my existence. I’ve been dealing with it since I was 17 years old — and I’m not just gray, I am WHITE. Since my hair is pretty long, I don’t really have issues with the roots that rather quickly appear on my hairline about ear level. However, the top of my head – specifically my part – now, that’s a whole other story. My roots start showing after about two weeks and at three weeks I need serious help. Getting my hair colored every three weeks is something I will definitely do when I win the lottery, but in the meantime it’s just a dream. A much more affordable and easy way to hide those roots with Gray Away.

I’ve used Everpro Gray Away Temporary Root Concealer Spray for years to cover my roots. It sprays on so easily and immediately covers my gray – ahem, WHITE – hair. So I was excited to try the newest Gray Away product, the Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder.

The Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder is definitely different from the spray-on version. This is a dry powder housed in a small round jar that has a separate sponge applicator. It’s applied to clean dry hair. Just pat the sponge on the powder then sweep onto roots. It quickly covers up any gray hair and works for large issues like my part, as well as for smaller issues like along the hairline.

Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder before and after

As you can see, it makes a huge difference. The powder is magnetic so it quickly adheres to hair strands and it doesn’t rub or wear off. I like that it’s easy to control and it doesn’t leave my scalp unnaturally dark. It’s also great for travel or even your purse for quick touch-ups. I think that in the world of temporary hair color, this is a terrific and unique option.

MARCIA’S GRAY SIDE:

Bane of my existence too! I can’t even begin to imagine how much I’ve paid to color treat my hair. I started off with every 6 weeks, then it went to 5, then to 4, and now I need it every 3 weeks. Not only don’t I have the time but I don’t have the money for that either. As much as I like the original spray from Gray Away, the Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder is so easy and so long lasting that I’m happier than ever. I have been stretching my color appoints to 4.5 – 5 weeks now without anyone noticing.

Before Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder

Before Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder

Not only does this help with the gray hair but it helps with my scalp which makes the grays even more prominent. As Lisa described this is incredibly easy to use. The sponge picks up enough of the mineral-infused powder so that I just have to pat it on. It’s not a one-and-done though, I go over it several times to make sure that my color is complete. And when it’s complete my hair looks very natural and shiny. It’s not stiff at all either.

After Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder

After Everpro Gray Away Root Touch Up Magnetic Powder

My after picture was taken on the same day as the before. I applied it, combed through my hair and voila – no more unslightly color. What makes it even better is that this doesn’t flyaway or look dusty. It never comes off on my pillow case or clothes. I wash my hair every other day or every third day and there’s no need to reapply. I wash my hair with my regular shampoo and it’s back to gray again.

Touch Up any time with ROOTSTIX

Do you ever run out of time to get everything done? Do you put off certain beauty tasks because there aren’t enough hours in the day to do what you really want? Do you get frustrated with how you look when you put those niceties off? The Beauty Info Zone bloggers run into this all the time and it drives us nuts. rootstix logo

One of our biggest problems is finding the time to get our hair colored before others notice that we have (GASP) gray hair or roots showing. When ROOTSTIX offered to send their temporary color sticks we were happy to try these out.

Rootstix

Rootstix

ROOTSTIX are thin pens that can be used on your head and your face. Touch up your roots, use them to fill in your brows and if you happen to have a mustache that you (or maybe the guy in your life) wants to fill in, this is a great product.

ROOTSTIX is available in 5 shades: black, dark brown, medium brown, light brown and red. At $15 this is a great tool to have in your arsenal.

MARCIA USES ROOTSTIX IN MEDIUM BROWN

Rootstix Medium Brown

Rootstix Medium Brown

I chose Medium Brown and it’s a great match for my hair color. Since my hair grows in gray (or is it white by now?) I have a lot to cover up.

after using Rootstix in the same area

I have to work pretty hard with Rootstix to cover though because of the precise tip on it. Even though I started using it on my roots, I’m now using it on the hair around the side of my face. Those are silver and they are stubborn as all get out. They also drive me crazy. Using the fine tip of Rootstix is now saving me from having those bug me. I can use it easily without getting anything on my face. Rootstix isn’t messy, it isn’t greasy and it dries quickly.

Medium Brown Rootstix

Medium Brown Rootstix

LISA USES ROOTSTIX IN LIGHT BROWN

Rootstix

I can assuredly say that my hair is WHITE. Really, truly, completely white…not gray. And it has been since I was 17 years old. My mom went white that early and so did her mom. So I’ve been coloring my hair for a long time and the worst thing about it is that whole roots problem. I color my hair brown so the white really shows up, way before it’s time to get my hair done.

Rootstix in Light Brown

Rootstix in Light Brown

Even before my white hair shows at my part, it shows on the sides by ears. It’s not easy to cover that up, let me tell you.  he typical root sprays are meant for the top of the head, not the sides by your face. That’s where Rootstix comes in so handy for me. The precise tip makes it easy to cover smaller sections, and the little comb ensures a natural look.

Rootstix can be found on their website and on Amazon. Right now they have a special on their site that gives you two for the price of one. That way if you are unsure of your shade or just want to share with a friend, you’ve got an even better price. At $15 this is quite reasonable, at 2 for $15 during this special, it’s a bargain.

Everpro Gray Away

Everpro Gray Away

I am beyond excited about today’s giveaway!  I first reviewed Gray Away a year ago, and I have purchased and repurchased this product over and over since then.  I used to use Bumble and Bumble Brown Hair Powder, which is pretty expensive and not perfect.  It puts too much color on the scalp, creating a slightly strange ‘wig’ effect since it camouflages my part as well as my roots.  Plus, the color rubs off on fingers and my pillowcase.

Then, one fine day Everpro Beauty Gray Away Temporary Root Color ($9.99) came into my life.  This is much easier to locate – my local CVS carries it – and much friendlier to my pocketbook.

A few fun facts about Gray Away:

-Instant gray hair coverage in 10 seconds
-Temporary root concealer that extends the life of your color
-Natural emollients that adhere to hair and washes out with shampoo
-Self-adjusting color technology that blends with hair color
-No mixing, no mess – just spray and go!
-Keeps hair feeling soft and natural
-Unique applicator for targeted coverage
-Free of harsh chemicals and dyes

The Light Brown shade matches these hair colors

The Light Brown shade matches these hair colors

The Dark Brown matches these hair colors

The Dark Brown matches these hair colors

It comes in two shades, Light Brown and Dark Brown. I use the Light Brown, which is great for light to medium brown hair. If you aren’t sure which shade is right for you, go for the lighter shade rather than the darker one.

cool applicator

It has a thin spray wand which makes for excellent control and less color on areas you don’t want covered, like your natural part. The spray itself is mineral-derived pigment which means it is safe for everyone to use, even pregnant women. Plus it dries very quickly. It will come off if you rub or scratch your head, but not nearly as noticeably as with the Bumble and Bumble.

Application couldn’t be quicker or easier.  Just shake the can, then spray on dry roots. It takes seconds for all that gray to disappear! The color is natural looking, temporary, and easily washed out with your next shampoo.

My experience with at-home hair coloring and Madison Reed

Madison Reed color and activator 3
Be sure to take a look at my recent at-home hair coloring experience with Madison Reed!  I had roots a mile long and finally got up the nerve to tackle them by myself.  Check out my review HERE to find out if Madison Reed really was better for me! – Lisa

Madison Reed before and after

It wasn’t funny at the time.  When I was in high school, I wanted to transform my mousey brown hair into a darker chestnut-brown.  The hair color looked amazing on the bottle.  What could go wrong?

Um…EVERYTHING.

My hair ended up looking like a Halloween witch wig.  I went back to the beauty store and got color remover…and my hair ended up looking like a Scarecrow wig.  I am still scarred from the experience!  So when Madison Reed offered me to the chance to try one of their revolutionary new hair colors that’s better for your hair, I was very, very reluctant.  The last thing I needed was a hair disaster.  But in the interest of beauty science and my compulsion to be a guinea pig for every new product, I agreed.  Madison Reed says their hair care is better for you — was it better for me?

Madison Reed has 32 different shades, and their hair color is different because it is has no harsh chemicals.  Their products don’t smell of ammonia, and they have no PPD or resorcinol which can cause allergic reactions.  Madison Reed truly listened to what women were saying was needed in home hair care, and their philosophy is about meeting customer needs with effective solutions.  Customer care is truly their number one priority.  With 32 beautiful, natural shades there is definitely something for everyone.  Madison Reed’s hair color products are also better for your hair – all 32 colors are PPD, resorcinol, ammonia, and paraben free.  A kit for one treatment is $29, although you can also get it autoshipped every month for less.  The cost of a trip to the salon for roots varies from $70 to $150 in this part of Michigan, so a kit from Madison Reed is definitely a bargain.

Before trying Madison Reed

Before trying Madison Reed

I typically get my roots done every 3 1/2 weeks.  If I go any longer, it’s just too noticeable since my hair is a dark brown.  However, I waited a very long 5 weeks after my last hair color to try Madison Reed.  After consulting with the experts, I chose Milano Brown as my hair color.  Finding the perfect color is easy through the Color Advisor, Color Translator, or mobile app.

Madison Reed instructions

The box arrived with absolutely everything I needed.  Although I could have had my husband or daughters help me, I was determined to do this all by myself!

Madison Reed Barrier Cream and Cleansing Wipe

1.   First, I put Barrier Cream around my hairline to keep the dye off my skin.  A packet is included and had much more than I actually needed.  I was a good girl and didn’t forget to put this on my ears and the back of  my neck.

Madison Reed color and activator

Color Activator

2.  Then I washed my hands and put on a pair of gloves (two are included in the kit).  I uncapped the activator bottle and put the ammonia and scent-free color inside.  This part was fun…looks like a snake all curled up in there!  Shook the bottle to incorporate the color and I was almost ready.

Madison Reed hair sectioned

3.  Next, I separated my hair into four different sections for coloring.  Looks totally goofy but this sure helps with application.

4.  I made sure I was wearing a zip-up top and got busy applying the color.  This part was not super easy, especially for the back of my head.  But then I figured out I could position my cabinet mirrors so I had a view of what I was doing, and that helped tremendously.  I had a lot of grey to cover and was a little paranoid that I missed some spots…but it turns out I got everything!  I used a comb after applying the color and that ensured an even and thorough application.

The color activated

5.  After applying the color I used the included cleansing wipe to clean up any residue, and it easily removed areas where I was a bit overzealous.  I put the included hair cap on and went about my business for about 40 minutes.  I would say the entire process (minus the time for picture taking!) was about an hour.

Madison Reed Shampoo and Conditioner - enough for several uses

6.  After, I showered to remove the hair color and used the included shampoo and conditioner (love love love these).  I was a bad girl and didn’t use the 2nd pair of gloves for rinsing…but I had no issues at all with staining.

Afterwards, my hair was so silky smooth I was astounded.  It was also shiny, full of body, and….no more grey hair!!!  I am very, very happy with my results.  Yes, Madison Reed is better for me!  I am a total convert to at home hair coloring.

Gray roots begone! Everpro Beauty Gray Away

So who gets their hair colored?

Raised hands

Yeah, me too. I have been getting my colored – and to cover the gray, mind you, not just for fashion – since I was 17 years old. My hair grows super fast so that means I need something to cover my roots in between trips to the salon.

Everpro Gray Away 3

For years I have used Bumble and Bumble Brown Hair Powder ($36 for 4.4 oz). It’s a spray-on colored hair powder and it works. It covers the gray. It’s not perfect though. The brown is quite intense so it makes me look like I don’t even have a natural part – which sort of makes my hair look like it’s a wig. Also, the powder is messy. If I scratch my head, my fingernails are brown. It smears onto my pillow at night. It’s also expensive and not easy to find. So when Everpro Beauty offered to send us their Gray Away Temporary Root Color ($12.99) to test, I was very happy to try what I hoped would be a better alternative.

First selling point for me:  Gray Away is inexpensive and it’s easy to find. It is available at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, and Bed Bath and Beyond.

It comes in two different shades. I use the Light Brown, which matches my hair perfectly. If you aren’t sure which shade is right for you, go for the lighter shade rather than the darker one.

fantastic thin applicator

The applicator is a very thin spray wand, much different from the larger sprayer I was used to using. This means greater control and less color on areas you don’t want covered, like your natural part. The spray itself is mineral-derived pigment which means it is safe for everyone to use, even pregnant women. Plus it dries very quickly. It will come off if you rub or scratch your head, but not nearly as noticeably as with the Bumble and Bumble.
