Happy birthday Glossybox! August 2014 Glossybox review

Happy birthday and happy third anniversary, Glossybox!  I can’t believe it’s been that long.  Glossybox has mastered the art of delivering full and sample-sized surprise collections of goodies from unique and interesting lines.  $21 a month is a wonderfully affordable way to treat yourself, especially when the value is always well over that – the retail value of the Glossybox they sent us for August is $64.

The August box has four sample sized products and two full-sized products.

deluxe sample of Eslor Firming Collagen Day Cream

deluxe sample of Eslor Firming Collagen Day Cream

Eslor Firming Collagen Day Cream (deluxe sample, retail value $17)  This is the first I’ve heard of this line, and this moisturizer sounds intriguing.  Ginseng has wound healing properties, collagen supports elasticity, avocado is an emollient and a terrific antioxidant, and wheat germ and sesame oils are great emollients.

deluxe samples of Uberliss Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

deluxe samples of Uberliss Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

Uberliss Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner (deluxe samples, combined retail value $8) These two hair care products should be extremely hydrating for hair with ingredients like royal jelly and keratin – plus these are sulfate-free.  I am excited to try them out, and they are the perfect size for my upcoming trip out of town.

Eyeko Skinny Mini Liquid Eyeliner

Eyeko Skinny Mini Liquid Eyeliner (mini size, retail value $8)  I absolutely adore my Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Eyeliner, so I literally squealed when I saw this cute mini liquid liner.  I find Skinny Mini is a softer black than the Eye Do Liner, so it’s great to have the choice of dark black or charcoal black.  The applicator is the same, though, and this is and incredibly easy liquid liner to apply.

SpaRitual Nail Polish

SpaRitual Nail Polish (full size, retails for $12)  Each box has a different shade, and I got Uncharted, a fuchsia shimmer.  This is a pretty, perky pink that is total fun.  I love pink shades so it’s perfect for me.

Kryolan Highlighter in Cashmere

Kryolan Highlighter in Cashmere (full size, retail value $18.95)  What a gorgeous, glowy cream highlighter – I love this!  It’s a small jar, but it’s so concentrated it will last forever.  The jar was created specially for Glossybox’s third anniversary, and it’s worth the price of the box all by itself.  A little Cashmere tapped onto cheekbones gives a perfect amount of glow.

For me, the stand out items are the Eyeko Skinny Mini Liquid Eyeliner and the Kryolan Highlighter in Cashmere.  However, everything in the August box is going to get play from me!  If you are considering subscribing, I have some codes for extra goodies for you.  Happy birthday and happy anniversary, Glossybox!  – Lisa

Drug store hair care finds for fine, flat hair: Dove Dry Shampoo and Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam

I have very fine, flat hair.  It takes great products to make it look good.  Want proof?  Here I am on a bad hair day – meaning this is what my hair ‘naturally’ looks like:

Fine, flat hair is not so fine to have.

Fine, flat hair is not so fine to have.

Finding great hair styling products for fine, flat hair is not an easy task.  Products that work miracles on normal or thick hair leave fine hair limp and greasy looking.  Or, products that do give fine hair volume make it dry and crunchy.  The good news is help for fine hair is right at the drug store, and the price is fantastic.  Dove sent me their Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo ($3.76) and Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam ($5.99) to test, and my hair was very, very happy.

Dove Dry Shampoo

Dove Dry Shampoo

The Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo does everything a good dry shampoo should do…it absorbs oil, makes dirty hair look clean, gives texture and volume.  It also has a very, very strong fragrance.  If your hair smells dirty, like cigarette smoke from the bar or car fumes from tailgating, the fragrance will cover that up in a jiffy.  However, if you are sensitive to fragrance, this is definitely NOT the dry shampoo for you.

Dove Dry Shampoo

Dove Dry Shampoo

It has a very powerful aerosol spray that doesn’t leave any white residue behind.  The trick is to spray it about 10 inches away from roots, then rub it in lightly and brush.  It’s a great product for those with fine or flat hair because it gives lots of volume without the heaviness and stiffness that dry shampoos can leave behind.  If it weren’t for the extremely strong fragrance, I would put this at the top of my dry shampoo list.

Dove Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam

Dove Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam

Dove Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam, perfect for fine hair

The Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam is a styling mousse specifically for fine, flat hair.  While this is also fragranced, it has a very light fresh scent.  Only those most sensitive to fragrance would be bothered by it.

Dove Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam

Dove Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam

Most hair foams weigh fine down and kill any attempts at volume.  But the Oxygen Moisture Leave In Foam is a wonder, leaving my hair soft, full, and shiny.  After towel drying, I apply two to three pumps to my long hair (it’s about mid-back length) concentrating on the roots and then lightly finger-combing through the length of my hair.  It detangles, conditions, and adds lots of volume that lasts throughout the day.

My Dove hair

My happy Dove hair

If you don’t mind the strong scent, Dove Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo is a wonderful way to give fine hair volume and texture, not to mention getting extra mileage from your last shampoo.  Dove Moisture Leave In Foam is a winner on all counts; anyone with fine hair should give it a try.  At these prices, everyone can afford to take a hair care trip to the drug store.  – Lisa

The Christie Brinkley Collection Hair Wrap from Hair2Wear

Remember when hair pieces were a luxury that required lots of time and lots of money? All those combs meant you needed to have the piece put on by a professional or else risk looking completely ridiculous. Now, however, hair pieces are super easy to put on and are quite inexpensive. A perfect example is the Hair2Wear Christie Brinkley Collection Hair Wrap ($16) that was sent to us.

Hair2Wear Bun Wrap

Christie Brinkley has a very cute collection of hair pieces including four different types of hair headbands. She also offers the Hair Wrap, which fills out a bun and makes it look beautiful. It could not be easier – put your hair in a bun, then slip this around and voila!  Instant elegance.

My shade is Medium Brown

My shade is Medium Brown

The shade I have is Medium Brown and it is very pretty. I love the golden highlights because they make the wrap look just like real hair.  I have long hair, but it’s quite fine so my bun can always use a little pizzaz. This wrap isn’t super smooth, it kind of fans out so it gives a slightly messy, but much more voluptuous bun. This would also be great for someone with shoulder length hair who wants to do a quick bun or chignon.

The Hair2Wear Hair Wrap

The Hair2Wear Hair Wrap

There is a quote from Christie on the box, it says, “I love this wrap — it’s both current and classic, and always so flattering. Wear it with bangs or without. My guilty secret? I don’t even have to blow dry my hair first for it to look great.” And by golly, she is right. The Hair Wrap is especially terrific for disguising less-than-clean hair.

Take a look at her collection HERE. The headbands are only $10 each and the Hair Wrap is just $16. It is definitely worth it!  – Lisa

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo Oil Treatment

I remember when I was a kid green hair was a common problem. Hair got bleached out by the sun and then swimming in lakes and pools slowly turned locks a freakish-looking green by the end of August. We had no clue how to prevent this…and when I got older I experienced similar summer issues with color fading and dryness. Leonor Greyl sent the BIZ the perfect answer for all summer hair protection issues:  Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo Oil Treatment ($57).

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo is a blend of different oils that is applied to dry hair. It can be a simple pre-shampoo treatment or it can be used as a protectant before swimming, surfing, or going into the sun. The oil is a combination of refined copra oil that comes from cold-pressed coconut kernels, and mongono oil, which is extracted from the nuts of an African tree found in the Kalahari Desert.

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Leonor Greyl Pre-Shampoo

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo

The oil has a wonderfully light, clean scent. It’s very easy to apply, just pour some oil into hands and smooth through hair. Then, go out and swim/sun/scuba to your hearts content and hair is protected from all the chlorine, salt, and UVA/B rays. The oil won’t just dissolve off when you dive into the pool or ocean as it protects hair from water to a temperature of 77 degrees. So in those cooler waters, the oil stays on beautifully. Later, just rinse out before shampooing. This PreShampoo oil is a must-have if you are a big outdoors person!

It’s also a must-have for those with colored, bleached, straightened, or dry hair. Putting this on for ten minutes before shampooing softens and detangles hair. It’s a beautiful treatment and some nights I put it on before bed for a great head of hair the next day.

Huile de Leonor Greyl PreShampoo is a cult classic and for good reason. If you have never tried this elegant haircare line before, I would recommend starting with this truly amazing product.  – Lisa

Gray roots begone! Everpro Beauty Gray Away

So who gets their hair colored?

Raised hands

Yeah, me too. I have been getting my colored – and to cover the gray, mind you, not just for fashion – since I was 17 years old. My hair grows super fast so that means I need something to cover my roots in between trips to the salon.

Everpro Gray Away 3

For years I have used Bumble and Bumble Brown Hair Powder ($36 for 4.4 oz). It’s a spray-on colored hair powder and it works. It covers the gray. It’s not perfect though. The brown is quite intense so it makes me look like I don’t even have a natural part – which sort of makes my hair look like it’s a wig. Also, the powder is messy. If I scratch my head, my fingernails are brown. It smears onto my pillow at night. It’s also expensive and not easy to find. So when Everpro Beauty offered to send us their Gray Away Temporary Root Color ($12.99) to test, I was very happy to try what I hoped would be a better alternative.

Everpro

Everpro Beauty Gray Away Temporary Root Concealer

three different shades

matches these hair colors

First selling point for me:  Gray Away is inexpensive and it’s easy to find. It is available at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, and Bed Bath and Beyond.

It comes in two different shades. I use the Light Brown, which matches my hair perfectly. If you aren’t sure which shade is right for you, go for the lighter shade rather than the darker one.

cool applicator

fantastic thin applicator

The applicator is a very thin spray wand, much different from the larger sprayer I was used to using. This means greater control and less color on areas you don’t want covered, like your natural part. The spray itself is mineral-derived pigment which means it is safe for everyone to use, even pregnant women. Plus it dries very quickly. It will come off if you rub or scratch your head, but not nearly as noticeably as with the Bumble and Bumble.

Just shake the can, then spray on dry roots. It takes seconds for all that gray to disappear! The color is temporary and easily washes out with your next shampoo.

...after!

…after!

This is an absolute winner of a product! With up to 40 applications in one bottle it is a wonderfully affordable way to stretch out the time between your salon visits. I love it. Everpro Beauty Gray Away is the only root concealer I am buying from now on.  – Lisa

NATU Hair Care: my holy grail of hair products?

WOW, this is a real find!! I don’t throw the term ‘holy grail’ out very often, but NATU Hair Care has earned that status in my book. I test many, many hair lines and have discovered some wonderful products. But I am not exaggerating when I say this line blew me away.

When NATU sent us the products, I thought – wow, cool packaging! It’s unique and attractive. But I never thought I was going to be discovering some of my favorite hair products ever.

Natu

NATU Hair Care…are the bottles pretty?

NATU is known for being a truly natural hair care line. Here is a list of everything that is NOT included in NATU products:

All The Un-Natural Ingredients That Didn’t Go Into The Creation Of NATU:

No Sulfates
No Silicones
No Parabens
No Resins
No Phthalates
No Petrolatum
No Ethoxylates
No Artificial Colors
No Artificial Fragrances
No Animal Products

Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate) aren’t great in hair products because they dry out hair and can cause breakage.  Synthetic parabens (Ethylparaben, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben) can be a problem because they cause allergic reactions for some.  NATU uses none of those ingredients, and in fact only uses natural-born proteins, lipids, amino acids, nutrients and vitamins that clean, condition, and repair hair beautifully.

They only have one shampoo and one conditioner, stating that different types for various kinds of hair aren’t necessary. Here is what I can tell you:  my long, fine, color-treated hair LOVES these products!

Natu

NATU Liberating Shampoo

NATU Liberating Shampoo ($15) is a gentle cleanser that gets rid of product buildup without stripping or drying hair. It gives crazy lift and volume after just one use.

Natu

NATU Reawakening Conditioner

NATU Reawakening Conditioner ($15) is a beautiful, lightweight conditioner that is wonderfully moisturizing without weighing down hair. It leaves my hair extremely soft and shiny.

Natu

NATU Reviving Mist

NATU has several different mists. The mists are leave-in conditioners that are applied to damp hair before any styling products. There are four different types: Volumizing Mist for Fine HairManaging Mist for Normal HairSilkening Mist for Thick, Coarse Hair, and Reviving Mist for Dry, Damaged Hair. I tested the Reviving Mist ($15), which adds moisture and strength to processed or dry hair.

I have pretty good hair, but I am astounded at what NATU does for me. My hair becomes full, soft, and floaty. It has incredible body and holds curl all day long. Plus is gives me great second AND third day hair.

My Natu hair...holy smokes, what a difference!

My Natu hair…holy smokes, what a difference!

The picture above was taken after using the Liberating Shampoo, Reawakening Conditioner, and Reviving Mist. I blew my hair dry and put it in hot rollers for ten minutes. That’s all!

NATU is sold at Target and at salons. You can find a store closest to you at their website, www.natuhaircare.com. Cute packaging, good prices, easy availability, and results like this?? NATU has joined my list of Holy Grail products. I know that if you try it, it will join yours too.  – Lisa

Are you a curly girl? Then check out Miss Jessie’s

If you are a curly girl, Miss Jessie’s just may be a miracle hair care line for you. I have several super curly friends who swear by this line, so even though I am not uber-curly I was more than happy to test some products Miss Jessie’s sent us. Keep in mind that my hair is quite fine, although I have a lot of it. I have natural wave to my hair – not enough to be called ‘curly’, basically just enough to be sort of annoying. So I need to either air dry it with salt spray product for pronounced waves, or else blow dry and curl with rollers or a curling iron for curls.

Miss Jessie's Super Slip Shampoo and Creme de la Creme Conditioner

Miss Jessie’s Super Slip Shampoo and Creme de la Creme Conditioner

Claiming to be ‘the best darn’ anything is going out on a limb, and Miss Jessie’s does so on every bottle of product. I tested the Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo ($11) and the Creme de la Creme Conditioner ($11).

Miss Jessie's Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo

Miss Jessie’s Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo

Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo is billed as “The Best Darn Detangling Shampoo. Period.” Many who have very dry and coarse hair sometimes can’t even use shampoo because it just wrecks their hair. But even those with incredibly difficult hair swear by this shampoo. It is a wonderful detangler that leaves hair extremely smooth and soft. It  has a green apple scent that is fresh and enjoyable. The shampoo is very thick and sort of…well…goopy – triple slip is no exaggeration. However, it lathers up nicely and rinses out clean. It works best for those with wavy, curly, tight curly, or kinky hair.

Miss Jessie's Creme de la Creme Conditioner

Miss Jessie’s Creme de la Creme Conditioner

The Creme de la Creme Conditioner leaves my hair very, very soft. Surprisingly, it is actually more on thin side, almost the consistency of a shampoo. I think those with very curly hair could easily use this as a leave-in conditioner to help keep curls soft and moisturized. It doesn’t weigh down my fine hair, which was surprising, and when I air dry I have no frizz at all.In fact, after using the combo of Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo and Creme de la Creme Conditioner I have full volume that lasts all day. When I use heat styling for curls, my curl definitely stays longer. My guess is that this would be a really terrific conditioner for those with super curly and/or wiry hair.

This line has tons of extremely satisfied and loyal customers who won’t use anything else. I think it should be on all curly girl’s list to at least try. And if you are an only sometimes curly girl like me, Miss Jessie’s is a great line to always have on hand.  – Lisa
